"You've probably heard about the Chinese spy balloon that got shot down off the coast of South Carolina. But did you know it came in through Idaho from Canada? That's right. The CCP or the Chinese Communist Party, they've been spying on America. But the real truth is they've been spying much longer in a much different ways than most people want to grasp. Today, we're going to get into it. We're going to tell you what the bigger plan is and we're even going to tell you what some folks are doing to fight back right from here in the good old USA. Let's get it. Welcome to BitBoy crypto. My name is Ben. Let's get right to it. I'm sure you've seen the memes you've seen the videos. You saw the balloon get shot down. You know we had a CCP surveillance balloon going across our great nation here in the United States. On Friday, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said this is about the balloon. It is a civilian airship used for research, mainly meteorological purposes. Affected by the westerlies and with limited self steering capability, the airship deviated far from its planned course, Chinese side regrets the unintended entry of the airship into the U.S. airspace due to force major, pay attention to that. The Chinese side will continue communicating with the U.S. side properly handle this unexpected situation, caused by force major. Now, very interesting, does this not sound like broken English kind of weird, that's their spokesperson, but I digress. Here's the thing. China has been infiltrating countries for years and years and years for all kinds of reasons. There's also some very interesting stuff with surveillance in Canada. We're not going to get to in this video, but China already has a blueprint on how to infiltrate a country. They did it to Canada. Back in the 90s. So are we going to prevent them from taking over our country? How do they do this? Well, we're not all going to be speaking Mandarin tomorrow. This is why China surveils because they look for the weaknesses and vulnerabilities and that's where they attack. They're not going to do it through war. They're not going to do it through secret spy games where they're assassinating people in America. They're going to do it through markets and they're going to look for our weak points. So you may have heard the term force major before. Force majority means greater force. It means something outside of the normal and unforeseen event. Now, you may have heard this phrase recently because it's contained in almost every single centralized exchange terms of service. Unforeseen events, I spent all your money. I'm looking at you, Sam. Now, I said that China has infiltrated Canada. Back in the 90s, 25% of Vancouver was bought by Lee costing a tycoon in Hong Kong working for the CCP. China infiltrated Canada in many ways back in the 90s. One thing that they did, they infiltrated a surveillance company, what they did was they had someone buy one of the largest surveillance companies in Canada. And then that entity knew they were selling it to China. For years, China were surveilling all over Canada with closed circuit cameras and security cameras and no one knew it was China behind the wheel. So let's just say they have a tendency. So no surprise this came in from Canada. Guys, where's Vancouver right above Washington? Where did the balloon come from? Canada into Idaho actually know it came in through Montana came right here. All the way through Missouri, South Carolina, and that's when some great American pilots, when shot that thing down, you ever had to stare down the face of a surveillance balloon, you know that you are really the Top Gun. That was really stupid. Guys, it's not the first time a Chinese 5 balloon is inner U.S. airspace. Pentagon said, noting at least three times during the previous administration and once at the beginning of this administration, but never for this duration of time. It never was able to make a full scale trip across the United States. Now, where they started off the coast of South Carolina, isn't it? Pretty strange. We could have shot it down the whole time. Why didn't we? We finally scrambled the jets when the mission was over, makes no sense. This was a PRC surveillance balloon, a senior administration official said, surveillance balloon purposely traversed the United States and Canada and we are confident it was seeking to monitor sensitive military sites. That's key. It's route over the United States near many potentially sensitive sites, contradicts the PRC government explanation that it is a weather balloon. Why would China launch a weather balloon in Canada? How does the Canadian weather affect China? How does the weather in Montana affect China? Guys, it makes no sense. And something else to keep in mind is The Pentagon does not releasing what spy tools were on the balloon. They're giving it close to the vest, but tensions are rising. It reminds me of a coffee Zilla. Coffeezilla created a fake NFT so he could entrap in an NFT influencer, he created his own story. I'm not saying it's bad, surely. I mean NFT influencer sucks. But coffee, Zilla these days, he said, you know what? I'm going to create my own story here. And it was kind of cool. I like what he did there. But the fact is, China has just created their own story. They've launched a weather balloon, and now we're having tension with China. Did they attempt to entrap us into some kind of conflict? Don't know, only time will tell, but they're basically now coming at us with a problem they created. So China's responded with fury over the U.S. Military action, saying on Sunday that it reserves the right to deal with similar situations going forward. The U.S. used force to attack our civilian unmanned airship, which is an obvious overreaction. We express solemn protest against this move by the U.S. side. Why they keep saying by the U.S. side, that sounds so weird. China's defense ministry spokesperson tan cafe said in a statement on Sunday afternoon local time. China's foreign ministry is accused the U.S. of overreacting and seriously violating international practice. You lunch to spy balloon China. Breaking news, China can suck it. The U.S. officials have pushed back on China's repeated claims, the down balloon was simply for civilian use and had made its way into American airspace by accident. And of course, I do have to say, we love Chinese people. Chinese citizens are great, Chinese Americans, absolutely great. But the issue is with the government. The issues with the CCP. So I'll say the word China, but obviously I'm talking about the leadership there. It begs the question, if this was just a weather balloon light they claim. Why are they so

"Idea shooting down a balloon that's getting information over America. And that makes relationships worse. I made it real clear that Xi Jinping that we're going to compete fully with China, but we're not going to look at them. We're not looking for conflict. And that's been the case so far. The president of the United States, speaking of PBS, yesterday evening, this is how China responded to some of those remarks made in the last couple of days and that address in the State of the Union. The quote from the Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman, the U.S. remarks are highly irresponsible and violate basic diplomatic protocols time they went on to say we are firmly opposed to that and condemn that. So I guess that's them slamming the president for what they called highly irresponsible remarks about shape. It's one of the stories out there and I'm going to give a major credit to Elizabeth economy now working with the secretary of commerce, but whether original work at the council on foreign relations, she has led on this in two books for 5 years is the way they do federalism in China. There's at some point where he gets some real pushback in Biden has to step lightly given the domestic realities of China. Does anyone in the U.S. government believe that that was a weather balloon? No. No, no. No, I don't think so. I think the reporting literally in the last 24 hours is there's many of these. We just don't see that. Precisely. Just to just to put those remarks from the Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman a better context. Nobody believes that their weather balloons. This does raise a question about Xi Jinping's power domestically and how much he really is trying to message to people domestically because this isn't going to necessarily resonate in the U.S. where people say, oh, maybe we shouldn't say anything. Any number of themes here that we have this morning and we'll get to China, of course, in the president of the United States and all that we witnessed in the last week. Amory Horton joins us now our White House correspondent and also it's been far too long, Maria tadeo joins us in a very busy Brussels this morning. Maria John and Lisa really want to focus here on what we see domestically, but I've got to go to the headlines and the jumble of headlines and it's generalized about jets over Ukraine. The idea of a visit to the United Kingdom, I wouldn't know a typhoon from a typhoon jet, but how close are we to jets being used by Ukraine in their war with mister Putin? Yes, Tom, and by the way, before we get into that, the mystery has been solved to reveal to what our mission is here in this building with European leaders and the European tour to your point continues. He has done London Paris and today will be Brussels now. It is about the fighter jets. We know that the debate around the tanks has settled and the Ukrainians now say we need those planes. That was a message in the UK was a message yesterday in Paris and that is probably going to be the message today. I would also say we allow me for an international audience. The idea of the fact that he's here for Ukraine is useful because he will get FaceTime with 27 heads of states at the same time with the top European institutions in the same place and beyond that also is a message that he wants to carry through to the European audience every national TV in Europe, every newspaper tomorrow will show what's going on today in Brussels. Again, we are waiting to hear the results of the meeting, but he will respond and continue to say we need those weapons, especially Tom. And I think we've got to pay attention to this. Ukraine is concerned, not just about what may happen around the date of the one year mark of the invasion, but also the spring, the spring offensive. That's what they worry. A regrouping and retraining of Russian forces. Meanwhile, Anne Marie, there's a growing groundswell of pushback in the U.S. about how much aid to deliver to Ukraine. And we didn't necessarily see that emphasis in the State of the Union with President Biden. What's been the aftermath and what's been the response to the European push to try to support Ukraine heading into the spring? Well, the president was pretty clear in his interview with PBS yesterday. He was asked directly about this. And he says, I have a firm commitment and then Judy Woodruff had followed up, and he said, yeah, it will go on. It will continue to go on. It's pretty ironclad that they are going to stand there and support support Ukraine. So the president, he is still keeping that line that this aid will continue. There has been pushback, of course. But also the pushback that we've seen from the likes of speaker McCarthy who said there won't be a blank check is a lot of Republicans saying they want oversight on this. And some of that is starting to step up as well. But you can imagine the United States, especially yesterday, Jens Stoltenberg from NATO standing next to Secretary of State and today blink and talking about that they will continue this to commitment to support Ukraine. The president said, speaking of the Europeans, making sure he keeps NATO united, that's something he's very proud of. The other thing to really watch was I thought it was fascinating. Secretary of State blinken's comments on fighter jet. This is something Ukraine is asking for. And he didn't outright say no. He left a tiny window open

"Welcome back at 14 till I'm John trout, America in the morning continues. The U.S. is expected to learn more in the coming days about the suspected Chinese spy balloon shot down off the South Carolina coast over the weekend. Correspondent Clayton Neville tells us the U.S. Navy is working to recover more remnants from that airborne menace. U.S. officials say the surveillance balloon was about 200 feet tall. It's been compared to the size of a jet. It was carrying what's described as a long sensor package and its debris is scattered in 50 foot deep water in the Atlantic Ocean, stretching 1500 yards long and about 1500 yards across. It was shot down off the coast of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina at the direction of the president. China, China. Sent that surveillance balloon over. Senator Chuck Schumer defending the Biden administration's response. The Biden administration was calm, calculated and effective. According to they listened to the military experts, they listened to the intelligence experts. And they did the right thing. The senator was referring to the decision to wait until the balloon was over water to shoot it down to avoid potential problems on American soil. Yesterday, the first images of the recovery surfaced. Members of the navy scene pulling pieces of the balloon into an inflatable boat, a navy warship and three coast guard cutters are part of the operation, which is now mostly focused underwater. U.S. reconnaissance drones are scouring the ocean floor for more wreckage. Everything found is headed for the FBI to be analyzed. This is Republicans in Washington insist the balloons take down came too late. It completed its mission. President Biden let it complete its mission before he shot it down. And it went over many military bases. It wasn't some random path that it took through the United States with congressman Steve scalise. This idea that oh, don't worry it wasn't collecting data sending it back to China. How can anybody say that with a straight face? Members of Congress are expected this week to be briefed on what's been found during the recovery and China reiterating their stance that the U.S. overreacted by shooting the balloon down when asked if China wants the balloon back. A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said the airship doesn't belong to the U.S.. It belongs to China. I'm Clayton Neville. Correspondent Steven portnoy. The Chinese foreign ministry, which overnight said U.S. accusations of spying were speculative, now says the balloon is of a civilian nature and used for scientific research, Beijing claims the airship seriously deviated from its scheduled route and strayed into U.S. airspace due to the westerly wind. Republicans have urged the president to shoot the balloon down something The Pentagon has strongly advised against due to the possible risks to those on the ground. Sources tell CBS News the balloon has solar panels, so it is not going to run out of fuel. "By copying basically the American equivalent of the Russia hoax. The Chinese foreign ministry has claimed, quote, on social media, there are forces with ulterior motives that relate this fire with the local response to the COVID-19, but it's not working. There are major protests happening all across cities in China. Citizens stormed over lockdown barriers to protest against officials in zhengzhou, a massive iPhone plant had a riot over the COVID restrictions and delayed bonus payments. In Chongqing, a resident gave a speech saying, without freedom, I would rather die and a watching crowd rescued him when the police tried to arrest him. There are street protests in Beijing and Shanghai where people have protested symbolically against speech controls by holding up blank sheets of paper. Ironically, a lot of people are protesting by singing the national anthem of China, which notably includes the line rise up and rise up. So we don't know how these will end. We don't know how these protests will conclude, but the sad truth is that the people of China that are rising up against this digital dictatorship in dozens of cities. Across China, people that are rising up in record numbers. They're going to lose eventually. Why? Because only one side has the guns. You see, all of these different through lines come back down to who actually has power, who has the power to be able to call balls and strikes over a society. The Chinese Communist Party has a fixation on the superstitious. The people of China are getting wary of having no liberty, no freedom, no mobility at all, whatsoever. And so they're starting to rise up. The Chinese Communist Party is going to get a little nervous that they're going to have a human rights catastrophe on their hands. The Chinese Communist Party can't take Taiwan if they have this unrest domestically. They can't take another they can't put another notch in the belt and road initiative. None of the Chinese Communist Party, the dictatorship of Beijing. Knows that they're going to have to clamp down on their citizens. And they probably will. Are you tired of feeling tired? Yes, I do dispute the OBR forecast because what happens with trade depends on the actions that I and my colleagues across governments take right now. The OBR is probably making a forecast based on how we use to do things. They don't know how we're going to be doing things. So I think wait and see. Though bad knocks comments were focused on Brexit and trades, they risk rekindling around that helped to end the premiership of lei's trust to us as government announced massive package of tax cuts without an OBR forecast leading to chaos and financial markets and her eventual resignation. I do think that inflation has affected everybody. And I think has rebaseline to some extent prices. So I don't think that prices are going to go down to pre-pandemic levels. That was Uber's CEO Dara khosrowshahi also telling Bloomberg, the main ride hailing business is stronger than ever as Uber's revenue surged by 72% in the latest quarter. And finally, the Brazilian president jair Bolsonaro has vowed to respect the constitution, but he stopped short of formally conceding to Luis Inacio Lula da Silva. The Chinese foreign ministry also says it's suspending cooperation on things like criminal investigations and climate change. The likely visit would be a landmark move by a U.S. official with Pelosi becoming the highest ranking American politician to visit the island in 25 years. "As I say a lot of action in the yen on risk aversion. That's the Bloomberg business flash, now he has James wolcott with more on what's going on around the world. Good morning Anna, it's very Bloomberg today, fast cars and fixed income at 12 o'clock we'll get Ferrari's earnings and for those who have trade bonds at 10 o'clock at the UK is set to sell 2.75 billion pounds worth of ten year 1% bonds. And then looking ahead to eco news at 3 p.m. UK time, it is the U.S. job openings and labor turnover survey days which will come out, but then if she does go, it's reported Nancy Pelosi is expected to drive a Taipei at three 20 p.m. this afternoon. Story of U.S. high speaker Nancy Pelosi said to be making a visit to Taiwan defying objections from Chinese authorities, the plan would be a landmark move by a U.S. official, Pelosi would become the highest ranking American politician to visit the island in 25 years, The White House urging China not to escalate tensions with the U.S. after Beijing, warned of grave consequences if the visit went ahead as a briefing underway at the moment at the Chinese foreign ministry over that the Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman saying that China would take resolute measures if the Pelosi trip goes ahead. A quick look at some of other top stories today, BP posting an adjustment adjusted net profit of 8.45 billion for the second quarter that's a beat of $1.7 billion on analysts expectations. It's the world giant's best result since 2008 BP says it will raise its dividend by 10% per share and ramp up, share buybacks. And one of the men who planned the 9 11 attacks with Osama bin Laden has been killed during a U.S. counter terrorism operation in Afghanistan, I'm an Al zawahiri, took over leadership of Al-Qaeda in 2011 shortly after American forces killed bin Laden, President Biden announced the news that as I hear he had been hit by a CIA drone strike on a house in Kabul on Sunday. Those are our top stories. Okay, from our top stories then to a focus back on inflation inflation in the UK is fast approaching double digits the country is veering towards recession and winter threatens and other round of ferocious energy price hikes, inflation is having all sorts of consequences, analysis by the institute for fiscal studies, shows the UK is no longer on track to meet its school spending target for example, but at all the consequences of higher inflation bad, a question worth asking. Let's talk about that with Bloomberg's emea government and economy correspondent Lizzie Burton, who is with us in studio Lizzie. So are there winners then from higher inflation? Well, now let me start by saying just how painful the cost of living crisis is for many households and it creates massive instability for businesses. I think we must acknowledge that, but as you say, there are some winners. Namely, anyone who's in debt, including the government. Because nominal tax revenues rise like vat, you've got workers falling into higher tax brackets, income tax brackets, both of which erode the government's debt and especially that's happening because the government isn't raising public sector pay in line with inflation or benefits in line with inflation. But there's always that phrase never let a crisis go to waste as Winston Churchill said and it gives an opportunity for whoever is the next prime minister to be economically radical, both trust and sunac idolize Margaret Thatcher. This is what she did in the 1970s. And so some people will embrace less trust plans to shake up the UK treasury and review the Bank of England's mandate. Cynics, though, would say that the tax cuts that she's proposing that economists warn will be inflationary will lead to higher interest rates are exactly what she wants because the grassroots membership she's pitching to, many of them will have paid off their mortgages. And I think it's really interesting that the English housing survey show shows that 34% of Britons, that's the majority of Britain, have already paid off their mortgages. And so these are people for whom higher inflation will only boost their house prices as we saw in that nationwide data earlier and higher interest rates won't affect as much as people who've got mortgages, although they presumably would have savings. What does the Bank of England stand to benefit at all from higher inflation? Well, we know that the banks expected to hike by a half point on Thursday it would be the biggest hike since 1995 and while no Central Bank would welcome double digit inflation or the prospect of it. It is giving the Bank of England the opportunity to raise rates back towards neutral. And remember, they've been stuck in the doldrums since the financial crisis, so you could see that as a benefit. Okay, Lizzie, thank you very much. We will look ahead of course to the Bank of England coming up shortly. So interesting, interesting dynamics of and Steven when it comes to debt and the way that the inflation story plays in here because of course if you've got a large pile of debt if wages are going up as Lizzie's pointed out, that's a good opportunity to pay down those debts, but if interest rates are going up, then servicing those debts can become more expensive, so some complexities, of course, to note, and we look ahead to the Bank of England, where is it not tomorrow? What day is it? It's Tuesday. That's good. I'm glad we're all agreed on that subject. Yeah, it will be really interesting. We were speaking to various botanical from boundary research in the program who was saying that it should be a 25 basis point hike at this stage because the data is already starting to show easing off of inflation as well. So that feeds into the overall picture of well to cut the consensus or other the majority of economists surveyed by Bloomberg.

"Business stories and the markets. Samsung reported its slowest profit growth in more than two years, rising costs and lukewarm consumer demand squeezed margins, operating profit rising to 14 trillion 1, and analysts had been estimating 14.6 trillion. Sales did increase 21%, though, and that was slightly above estimates. Samsung will provide net income later. Samsung's stock has been buoyant this morning with gains of 2.3% in the early going. China has accused the United States of technological terrorism. This follows a move by Washington to stop ASML and Nikon from selling key technology to the country. The restriction would add a block on other advanced systems to China. Chinese foreign ministry spokesman jolly Chen said it's another example of what he called the U.S. practice of coercive diplomacy. Meantime, signs are growing that China's economy shrank in the second quarter. This will be the first time since 2020. The consensus from a Bloomberg survey is that the government will say that GDP grew about 1.5% in the second quarter from a year earlier. However, high frequency data for June and losses in the previous two months suggest that the economy could have contracted over that period, blamed the lockdowns for that. A quarterly drop in GDP has only happened once before. Let's check the markets, we do so every 15 minutes on Bloomberg radio, we started off in positive territory, but once the Hong Kong and China markets opened up, it has dragged the MSCI Asia Pacific index down somewhat. At the moment the nikkei is up two thirds of 1%, the ASX 200 up two tenths of 1%, but the hang seng index has faltered its down 8 tenths of a percent and the China stocks are down about a tenth of 1%. "Up buns on the way down and what's the dollar doing? Well, the dollar at the moment is up. It did hold on to its strength to gain about four tenths of a percent. Asian equity futures are edging higher this morning rich even with that. Earlier U.S. stocks rose for a third day, the fed minutes were front and center and we'll get to that in a moment, but so too is the data that hinted at slightly slower growth. And also the notion that a lot has changed in the three weeks since the fed meeting. That might have spurred investors to look beyond the fed's hawkish stance and bid up stocks a bit. The S&P 500 edged higher with a gain of 0.4%, the NASDAQ was up also four tenths of a percent and the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained about a quarter of 1%. The two and ten year US Treasury yield curve remains inverted. The two year yield at 3%, the tenure at 2.92%, and as mentioned, we had a strong dollar today and that might have been one of the reasons that oil fell as much as it did oil fell below $100 a barrel. And got down to the mid 90s or so right now, WTI is at $98 and 33 cents, our sources say that the U.S. and allies have discussed trying to cap the price on Russian oil between 40 and $60 a barrel. And something for later signs are growing that China's economy actually shrank in the second quarter. That would be the first time we've seen that since 2020, the consensus from a Bloomberg survey is positive growth, but some of the high frequency data for June and losses in the previous two months suggest that the economy may actually have contracted over that period. So we'll take a closer look at China a little bit later. Rashad to you. All right, well, it does look like the Federal Reserve is planning another hefty rate increases minutes from June's historic policy meeting signal more action ahead. June's move was the largest rate increase in three decades at 75 basis points, and according to the minutes, policymakers black backed raising rates of their July meeting by another 50 to 75 points. Speaking earlier on Bloomberg television TD security to Priya, mister says the fed can not afford to stop. I actually think the cove is going to invert a lot more because we're going to get inflation next week. We're going to get payrolls later this week. The job market is still strong and inflation is high. So I think the fed really can not afford to stop. They're telling us if an unconditional commitment to inflation. So I think that front end rates rise, the long end stays more anchored because of growth fears. Fed officials did say that maintaining the Central Bank's credibility to control inflation is crucial and a return to 2% inflation is needed to achieve maximum employment. China has accused the United States of technological terrorism. That's the phrase used. This is after Washington pushed to stop ASML and Nikon from selling key ship making technology to the country. The proposed restriction would expand an existing moratorium on the sale of the most advanced systems to China. If the company is agree, it would significantly broaden the range of chip making gear that is forbidden from heading to China. Chinese foreign ministry spokesman jolly Jian, a last act lashed out at Washington stating it's another example of the U.S. practice of, quote, coercive diplomacy. Didn't say whether China planned any retaliatory measures in response. All right, let's now have a look at some of the world news headlines. British prime minister Boris Johnson is remaining defiant. That is his strength in the Conservative Party crumbles as get a San Francisco Ed Baxter has the details. A year, thanks, Richard Johnson

So i think you know the us sensing the each the eu sensing the eat but bilaterally they have a lot of disagreements about how to move forwards and by actually they also have a lot of concerns and problems within themselves. So i think what's interesting in the next twelve months or twenty four months would be to see how much you know. The eu would actually moved slightly towards us position when it comes to policy-making of china and all the while the chinese can absolutely sit back and watch watch that bickering take place. Yesterday was quite astonishing. Insofar as the talks were held on chinese territory the The the chinese diplomat's very forthright in their rebuking of the united states diplomats. One very much got the sense that the chinese were saying. You're on our territory. We will tell you what we think of you and we will tell it to our own people as well and that was absolutely the kind of message that the chinese foreign ministry has been saying as long as soon as they announced. Wendy sherman's visit in the first place. there was a reporter asking. You know one of the spokespeople of the foreign ministry. Oh what would you know. How would you react to wendy. That is only thirty minutes away from beijing being so close to the capital amid a pandemic that is still i mean despite china's success in curbing the pandemic it's still feeling the heat. China gets in on the SolarWinds act

"Reuters reports that the fbi investigation of the solar wind supply. Chain attack is looking into evidence that chinese threat actors successfully exploited a vulnerability in the company's software to compromise the national finance center a payroll system operated by the us department of agriculture. The department of agriculture's reaction to the story is ambiguous. The agriculture department emailed reuters to say that. Usda has notified all customers including individuals and organizations whose data has been affected by the solar winds orion code compromise but a second departmental spokesman said after the story broke that there was no data breach related to solar winds at usda but offered no further clarification the vulnerability the chinese threat actors are believed to have exploited is said to be different from the one used by. Unc twenty four fifty two. The thread actor widely believed to be a russian intelligence service. Reuters anonymous sources told them that the campaign used and infrastructure that have been previously deployed by state backed chinese cyber spies as the washington post observes many have suspected another group was also actively exploiting solar winds but reuters. Report is the first to suggest that this second threat actor was connected to the chinese government. The chinese foreign ministry denied any involvement observing i and in fairness correctly that attribution is a complex technical issue the ministry then moved onto unlikely insistence on the usual pieties. China resolutely opposes and combat's any form of cyber attacks and cyber theft. It's doubtful that any government on the planet even say the holy sea or san marino resolutely opposes any form of cyber attack unless cyber attack is construed narrowly as to rule out any form of interception surveillance or retaliation if any pure cyber are running any government. It's doubtful that government is in beijing. Some have said that majors cyber attacks are often more like riots than bank jobs with multiple actors going after the same targets for their own reasons. Reuters quotes former. Us chief information security officer retired air force general gregory to hill. Who thinks it's not that unusual for more than one group to hit the same product. Jeff rabi is a former australian ambassador to the people's republic of china and he's author of china's grand strategy and australia's feature in the new global order. That's just been published and it's available in all good bookstores jeff. Welcome back to the show so some great to be back now. I your thoughts about beijing's response to australia in recent weeks so we have that list of the foreign complaints the wind terrace and of course that tweet while a say i up disappointing to see the slights that have been made After the two quite constructive comments at the triumph prime minister a last week quite clearly. The prime minister was Diplomatically signaling That there was a strong wish to start a process of getting back to some sort of more normal relationship between the two countries the product make though it sounds dramatic when you run those three things together the way you have done that certainly not the same thing. And i'm not sure that they're all necessarily coordinated. I mean the fourteen points clearly seems to be freelancing by the embassy on matters that well known and in the public record in any case at a very odd way of putting something out if you leak it to a channel nine television crew that seems to be pretty casual behavior by the embassy then the tariff spo there has been a processing trained for months on the wind tariffs and i do understand that that was the normal process and the strain companies were busily making written submissions as part of that process. And then the tweet The present time it sounds like it's been contrived by the chinese foreign ministry as individual action. it was a tweet that was particularly widely on social media by a now nationalist artist and twitter and the foreign ministry spokesperson on his private twitter account. Pinder to name and so it's philippine. Middle level action doesn't really look to millions of any of these really coordinated broad cross section of the australian people just looking at the y. People who've responded this week is there is outrage and surely win china. does things like. This doesn't make it harder for people like you because you've been an eminent company on this issue for several years now. Hugh watt a bobcar. Pass gas on this program. Of course the former prime minister paul keating. Doesn't it make it hot. A all of you to make the case that al leaders should try to rebuild trust with such a regime yet. I can understand the public outrage especially the media is going into overdrive steer and just as you have said running all these things together as a coordinated action from the state It does make it harder to get sensible constructive discussion going a story about how we deal with these things. I like to find myself in such august company as you outlined. And you might add gareth evans. Many others that to the group as well but it certainly history doesn't help and it's difficult context in which to conduct foreign policy. What we're seeing is what is like to live in the situation with china relationships In a very poor state now. Other people in camera that i see welcome this their peopling camera who have the view that bad relations with china are inevitable. This is the new normal. We should get used to it and lupus it while the questioning myself. And the august company you've being linking me with. Is this the best interest of australia. And it also basic question. Your what has australia down to bring on china's in this way why you think china is picking on again. Picking on is quite pejorative. They're not doing this to other states. Our other key point. And i would phrase that differently tom i would say how is it that astray amongst like minded friends and allies other liberal democracies in the world in the region why's at the trial has become an outlaw and i think that really needs to be part of the public discussion. Isn't the reason. The australia is so over exposed to chinese pressure in beijing. Nosy so the chinese leaders going to inflict pain on australia whenever they can't australia. And not the other like minded way boy more. In other countries we ought to forty percent of our exports to china. No other country has that kind of exposure. I prefer countries in the region. China is by far the largest trading power. I mean that exposure would be the same for korea south korea which is liberal democracy in the region. it would be near that level. For nearly all the countries in the east asian region china is the dominant economic patna of all of the countries in the region and that is just a fact at its reflects. The extent to which china has grown as the dominant economic power in east asia. Alexander downer. The former. Foreign minister says that now's the time to reduce our exposure to china. But what everyone is saying. There's nothing new novel in that. And obviously when people start to realize that we are going to have for a long time a difficult and challenging relationship with china's manage. That's a fairly obvious. Point to make interesting from In addition to being former minister former director of the board of while clay. And very active Proponent in boosting. Australia china trade relations phrase time as soon as minister and i work very closely with him in that and i think we achieved a lot. So why wouldn't you wanna diversify every sensible business. Every sensible company diversifies the port made over and over again on this aspect is that it's going to be very hard. Because of the absolute scale and growth and prosperity of china. You are a foreign policy realist. All gripe house ruthless and that includes chana hardball at every turn and the stronger. China gets the more likely to throw its wide around now to the extent. These realist analysis is correct. How on earth do we solve. this problem. absolutely correct agree with all those points. Another point that needs to be made. And you don't make it much tom. And your pride yourself as being a realist and that is the relationship is asymmetrical that is effect. We need china. More than china needs us. This is not a comfortable place for us to be but it's a place we are. It's a place where we're stack and will remain and so We need to work out how to manage that relationship and we haven't done a particularly good job of a judging by the state rewritten today. So although you express yourself in a different way you essentially gray with the foreign policy realists professor join me shauna regular guest on this program and he argues that his china's power increases its definition of its national interests will grow and then beijing will seek a survey influence in areas on which its future security and prosperity dependent in response. The us will go to great lengths to stop china's rises. It essentially. your argument is well up a poet. I'm a great Admire of joint mish as well. I differ with him on a couple of points but his analysis and arguments have been hugely influential in helping me shape my thinking about these But i put on sphere of influence is. I think that's already happened. I think china is the dominant paranagua this at length in my book in eurasia from the east china sea to also china is the dominant parent. That's happened largely because sanctions against russia poor economic performance by russia Pushback from from europe against russia has meant that brushes had to cede to china's ascendancy in eurasia and so very part of the world. And i think we now live in a world of michigan talks about a world of two great powers with boundary orders and in the question then becomes is some equilibrium at stable between the two. And i believe there is.

China Freezes Credentials for Journalists at U.S. Outlets, Hinting at Expulsions

"China is withholding the renewal of press credentials for journalists at some US news media outlets, including the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg and CNN. NPR's John Ruit reports. This comes as some Chinese journalists in the U. S wait for their lapsed visas to be renewed. The foreign correspondent's Club of China says at least five journalists working for American news outlets have been affected. China's Foreign Ministry has issued them letters in lieu of press cards, forcing them into what the FCC calls a precarious temporary status. Foreign reporters in China must have ministry issued press cards to get residence permits that allow them to live and work in China. Move is the latest in a string of tit for tat measures between Beijing and Washington on Twitter, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said cooperation with US journalists could continue if Chinese journalists are treated fairly in the United States. China says US has ordered it to close Houston consulate in what it calls a provocation that violates international law

"Breaking overnight. China says the U. S. Has ordered it to close. It's Houston consulate. What it's called a provocation that violates international law. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said the U. S abruptly demanded the previous day the consulate cease all operations China, saying it will respond if the decision is not reversed in a statement. Early this morning. The State Department says it did it to protect intellectual property. Media reports out of the Houston area said authorities had responded to reports of a fire at the consulate. The Houston Chronicle, citing police said. Witnesses said people were burning paper. In what appeared to be trash cans that abrupt eviction coming the same day, the Justice Department accused to Chinese hackers of stealing hundreds of millions of dollars of trade secrets more recently targeting firm's developing a vaccine. For the Corona virus that was announced on Tuesday. Campaign targeted intellectual property and confidential business information held by the private sector. Including Cove in 19 related treatment, testing and vaccines. The hackers also targeted the online accounts of non government organizations and individuals, dissidents, clergy and democratic and human rights activists in the United States, China and Hong Kong. Into the indictment. These malicious cyber activities began more than 10 years ago and were ongoing as of the date of the indictment. During that time, the hackers stole terabytes of data from hundreds of targets, establishing themselves as a prolific threat to U. S and foreign networks. Activities outlined in the indictment are concrete examples of two concerning friends first. And one we've seen for some time. China is using cyber intrusions as part of its rob, replicate and replace strategy to technological development, Second and one that is perhaps less appreciated by the public and international partners. China is providing a safe haven for criminal hackers who, as in this case are hacking in part for their own personal game, but willing to help the state And on call to do so.
