"Hello friends welcome back to the show. This is the g. rpg. Report episode one hundred and forty five little bit weird this week and we knew it was going to be with christmas eve falling on our normal release date and of course christmas the next day and there must situation My little girl's birthday being the day after christmas so yeah we get a bang bang. Bang three a craziness there. Obviously just mitt that there was really no time to reporter Record a podcast. Even before christmas was just too hectic so We're recording this on saturday. The twenty seventh just a couple days left in twenty twenty. Goodbye rents But we've got a lot of cool things to talk about today. I kinda wanna wrap up all the stuff that we've missed as it's been nine days since our last pockets. No i'm sorry that's not even right. That is fuzzy. Math is been eleven days since our last podcast. So we've got a few things to go over That have popped off. Since then. And i wanna kinda look look forward to sometime this week. Mean jordan are going to get together and kind of talk about What games we really loud from. Twenty twenty maybe even discussed some Game of the year options and then look forward to twenty twenty one as Right off the bat. We got a bunch of games coming out in the beginning of the first the new year. We got to tell you rods two. You've got bravely default to you've got he's nine And the newly Confirmed for some of five strikers. Just a name The the big big ones I'm sure there'll be others. That will be unfortunately lost in the in the way. So we're going to record that sometime this week and In lieu of any news breaking. I may just make that part of the normal podcast unsure on that. But let's get into it. I hope you guys had a wonderful christmas holiday I didn't have any games that i particularly wanted that. We're already out. So i just kind of asked Asked the parents for Email confirmation that beginning Today risa to when it comes out on january twenty six that was cool and i did end up much too. Many of your delight. Hopefully i'm finally going to take a dive into these series. I picked up. Yee's eight for only twenty dollars on the ps story. I could not refuse as the physical version just refuses to ever go down in price so i figured this was by far the best opportunity. Get in on. What many consider to be a very very good. Jr pg and at some point. I'll be playing. It don't really know when that's going to be but that's enough rambling We did have fell. Calm day Twenty twenty winter addition and we got a few tidbits of information about the new legend of heroes. Toddle kiro no koseki if you notice the thumbnail for this Podcast are the two newest main characters is a third as well but these They dig use some high-rise resolution images of the to unsure why the third one was kind of like ashaari pow We'll get you later but still no names for these two characters but we do have a bit of information stuff. You see that image. There's a couple other on our facebook and twitter feed of those two characters while they are. I say have that trails feel to them. I do kind of agree with what president condo said last time that at mediate Glance they don't appear to be trails characters. And i believe that lies in the fact that they are from calvert So they're going to look a little bit different and we'll talk about that in just a little bit. These illustrations were drawn by katsumi. Nama and the other characters are from alcom. Like i said the character's names were not announced to this game is coming out sometime in twenty twenty one in japan so those were the images. There were some other ones as well. If you'd like to see all those. I did put up a slide show video on our youtube channel. So you can check those out if you don't feel like clicking through pictures of via the website here is what we do know and i will just read this to you as this is the about for the new age of heroes karoo new koseki beyond the blue sky ahead of flashing light a land. A dawning resides cuba. There's no spoilers going on in here. This is all preliminary stuff in the news story arc. So we don't have to worry about that type of stuff the ladder this latter half of the trails. There is about to begin. The setting moved to the calvert republic in two thousand and twenty one foul calm release. Legend heroes kernigan the latest entering the trail serious as its fortieth anniversary rumors of work. The calvert nation is a multi ethnic nation experiencing unprecedented economic growth. Brought about by post war reparations. In a corner of the capital of a huge nation were immigration issues bringing about political instability. Okay well maybe. There are some spoilers in here okay. let's just get to the best. I'm sorry i read that. And i didn't think about it until just now okay. The command style action time bow system. You didn't previous trails. Titles has been revamped and that's going to set up an from a couple people. Let's just see what they said. Seamlessly transitioned from action oriented field battles to turn based commands battle to turn based command battle systems while making use of the unique elements the sixth generation combat or meant would try to pronounce his last time. I'm not sure how it is x. I f. r. x. i. p. h. a. z. Feel in a ballots to evolve from the previous trails titles. Okay so what does that mean. I don't. I don't know i really don't know how to had say seamlessly transition from action oriented field battles to turn based command battle systems I i mean obviously there's a bit of an extra element when you strike the enemies on the field in order to go into the turn based battle i. I need to see this in action to really know what they're even beginning to talk about would just have to wait and see You will feature many elements you laws. It's setting including a topics system which enabled together until such topics by communicating with. Mpc's out towns tra- gate situations in your favor when you act as a spray gun and that is the The character it's basically a detective. But they're calling them spring and alignment flame system. In which characters three alignments great and chaotic fluctuate depending on your own style influencing various status allies and adversaries and even scenario developments please look forward to allege heroes lowest entrance toasters depicted enrich expression by thumbs new original ingen. So that's that's pretty cool Here's what how they set up the situation and I get. I don't wanna get too much into this. The to emit the two people that you see in the image the one is the one call the speaker those are they say sometimes detective somedays negotiators and other days as bounty hunters. They're up for any job from any client. That's pretty cool And then the other one is Say to be a school girl wearing uniform. Prestigious school visits a rundown building located in old town in cowards capital. So that's the setting that's beginning of it. You can check out those images. Like i said there's a third character in the images as well with the two swords on his back and some long hair but we don't have any details. There is a battle scene that shows what looks like to be a craft or an art powering up but that from that snippet it does look to be turn based. So don't i'm so confused as to what to make. But i'm certainly excited about this one. But the lack of details and the promise of something new is leading to some question marks popping up. And i don't necessarily love that idea but it is what it is and until we learn a little bit more. It's just going to be speculation Unfortunately though that wasn't the only bit of information. And i'm sure we'll have a bunch more but Foul calm day twenty twenty winter. Also let us know about and this is not really affecting us as much. But they did. Say that a hatch marco koseki which is the one before this one and after cold steel four Clouded leopard entertainment will release a switch. Pc esteemed version of the game Sometime in summer. Twenty twenty one in japan in asia. I'm nearly positive. That's the same company that handled The transition for coastal three and four to the top of my head. So i came out for. Ps four in japan on august twenty seventh. So you know nearly a year later. They're talking summer to get that Switch pc version now. It handles the asian side of this and i s america handles the translation available. At least they have for the past two games In the cold still series in the west still no confirmation that that translation is ongoing. That have to assume that it is unless it's being handled by other parties I mean exceed did do the first two trills of cold steel games but at imagine that they are going to do this hedge amari as well and as soon as i hear something about that it will happen. It's certainly a good thing that this is happening and It could lead to a speedier at least for these games in the west. But like i said still no information on unfortunately. The last thing that they talked about was not briefly. Mentioned this last time the natto. noca- seki game. That is coming out in japan for For playstation four. This was the old Two thousand twelve least. Psp action rpg though some new details and images kinda showing the ps p version versus the Ps four version of it They're sent opposites gonna run at sixty frames per second on. Ps four with more vibrant graphics. Not being obviously these are things that you'd want to have updated from an old old system user interface options One thing that i thought was very interesting. And i'm not to say what they say. This game is not connected to the trails game. However the main character's name is now utah herschel now you trails players especially cold. Steel will know towa. Her last name is hershal So what they're they say there's no connection but then there's a connection is the protagonist and a boy from that island who attends and academy in saint elise. Those aren't you know aren't names that i recognized the from the trails series so it is very very interesting and i would be would like to know what that connection is at kind of read through it. You can read through the tales. Like i said before i am lower on the percentage scale To say of this game was actually going to make it over here or not. I if i if you say your day is gonna come today out outs. Action say no but would just have to wait and see. The original game did not look super impressive. So this isn't a game that i'm all that excited about to begin with but we'll have to. We'll just have to wait and see if that indeed happens for a lot of switch owners the next. Gop g they will more than likely be picking up is going to be bravely default to gain closer and closer to that february twenty. Sixth rolled wide release date friend square annex released new trailer for it albeit in japanese and have still not seen an english version of this yet so it talks all well. Supposedly it talks about wiz walt. The country established by those mejia's. They did it themselves to studies. The magic research institute But the the real kicker with this one and you can see it. Is this places overgrown. It looks like it was built kind of in the middle of it are on top of a giant tree. And there's just this tree just going right up through entire town is really cool again Trailer is how long was trailer of about three and a half minutes. Like i said in japanese so you can't really tell what's going on but it is kind of cool to see some of the visuals in action Four it but if you're elected shake those game out for yourself you can check out the demo for it It is now live on the east shop and One who feels the demo before its release will even pick up one hundred mine. Intendo platinum points here is the Short official description of the demo experienced the games at risk and reward system character strategy and stunning visuals in the latest braley default to final demo in this demo. The games four men characters are already other journey with jobson abilities at their disposal. I downloaded this. The other night. as if getting the switch away from my kid was hard enough with minecraft previously The kid did pretty good for Christmas and her birthday. And i now had to contend with her own copy of animal crossing so she and my wife can play two switches and who copies of animal crossing so they can will each other's islands. I know she also got the Spyro trilogy which. I really enjoyed those games growing up. So i can't wait to play those with her and relive those moments and she picked up mario maker to so. I'm not seeing that switch for a while. Maybe once she goes to sleep. If i don't have anything to play eck fired that demo. I would like to see how it is shaping up as will If you've got some free time and you're looking for d'you monster hunter rise. There are to say ten videos in total. Let's do a little no here. One two three four seven eight nine ten eleven twelve. There's twelve total. So i check. They were they were released in two packs. I take them all and made them into six long. Over is from publisher. D three Developer felicia quite heard of them before. But still no word on it. I really hope they bring this over because it does pretty fun but yeah nothing Nothing quite yet. i'll go over some of these ones. That are just videos. There's a fifteen minutes of new footage from christ tales. This is previewing the present and future game play of it Remember this game got pushed back to early. Twenty twenty one. That's just the winner that don't into it's been Hit with a couple delays here lately. Not sure how much. Everything's pandemic related at this point but how much they just wanna fine tune things in. How much is really needed to make this work. Obviously you're doing with a system of past present and future while stuff can go wrong and working Just the way that you would like it to work New genesis the fantasy star online. To almost say reboot but definitely the new version of there is the opening movie for it and you should probably check this out. If we're looking at over fifty minutes of new footage as well mostly the character creation for its but this opening movie You know typically when you see these opening movies. They're using a pre rendered scenes. This was actually created using parts of the in game graphics. Engine which looks amazing Definitely if you're looking forward to this you should check it out sometime in twenty twenty. One is the release date Four it but again. This is one of those. Well not one of those but this is the faa gain. That i'm kind of just don't understand why it's not on playstation four. In the west it is in japan. But you've got to either play on xbox or on pc here in the west doesn't make a ton of sense but there's just things like that in this world that we gotta kinda get used to them. I guess we got three bits of sky news this week. i is. You can check out the fourth official trailer for six defiance of destiny I believe there's an english. There's an english version for this out. Now you can check it out. There was originally came out. There was just a japanese version but the english version shows off of really cool voices that they've got for the game. They got some good voice. Talent in this one in Very fitting for the series especially the little reincarnated pug services is awesome It's about seven or review of the game If you are curious about what's going on in this one changes that they've made this series. You will definitely want to check it out. Of course it doesn't come out in the west until summer. Twenty twenty one. Japan is going to get it in right about a month on january. The twenty eighth The other day actually. This was on christmas eve that this news broke New punchy released some new information screenshots for the game featuring and i hope i get these names right la haro aetna and flown Those were the original characters from the original the sky and they are saying that Basically once you beat the game you can Play a scenario with these original characters in it so kind of a you know. They're not in the main game this something post post content but the fact that they're in their would open the door to other characters popping up from other games as well. So that's a cool thing The world inside of an item. I m worlds have mended. Detailed in this article on worlds are divided into several fours slash layers and the items level increases with every four. That you clear says weapons become stronger as they level up. You can clear there either. Worlds to power them up once. An item is leveled up. You can get the same item at the same level from then on pretty cool feature of the sky series all these images i took input into a slide show. You can check that out on our youtube channel so you can dispatch companions into item worlds to research them. There's a new team attack system with up to ten characters in it. That's a pretty cool feature. New enemies were detailed There's a new horsemen. That's pretty crazy. So here's the Previous protagonist Oh here we go says not only will hear from. Our doctors appear the protagonist in heroines of the sky. Two three four and five will also appear in three d. The protagonist and heroines wilburs as downloadable content sometime after the launch of disguise six. So there's a from the sky to or i don't know in timika these pronunciations. I'm at risk of offending people. I understand how they're supposed to be pronounced So yeah they're gonna add them in there as as post content deal see. That's the type of thing. Like i would think you'd be okay with paying for because that's obviously not a part of disguise six. They are previous games characters in new content. So take how you feel about. Dlc that is that's one thing i think is is no k To do speaking of all those previous disguised characters they are all assembled in the rpg. Mobile game And we got news from bolt chain games that they will release worldwide the mobile version the sky arc in spring. Twenty twenty one Unless you're in these countries in the no fast if you are but we are a western primarily focused podcasts. So you're not going to get in china taiwan hong kong macau singapore malaysia or korea Sorry don't i don't know why maybe that is. Just it's gonna come out later. Maybe there's some rules preventing that From happening if we're interested in getting it on a closed beta for the game. They will have one for canada. Brazil australia and the philippines sometime in january so really happy to see this thing go worldwide. There was a global announced trailer for it This came back It came back in march of twenty nineteen in japan. Right obviously gotta writes the point. Now they're really to bring this thing out worldwide As far as the gotcha game or not. I don't know if i recall. I think it was paid game. But i should probably ended up before speaking about it. But i'm sure there's elements in there but hopefully this is a Not another one of those kind of like. We've we've like. We've got enough of those already know ankara today. See what we got and move forward I would love to have listener support. Not have the need for ads but it is just a reality of life and we may just see what that happens. If i get a bunch outpouring of support here after listening to this. I may reconsider. Dx and the They were supposed to come on japan on february twenty eighth. they have been delayed until march fourth. Twenty twenty one in japan. So if and when a western. What's going to happen for that. it's now going to be About five weeks later. I'm really going to have to search my feelings. That i think is flowing anything to if it's going to be found pacers. Seven remastered or a remake rather or four. It's it's really tough there. There's my heart says one thing amonte says another and there's different things to have to consider overall ought to make that final decision here real soon on what that What was looking forward to our thoughts here are coming out this week on. Kyle duncan beckett. "Maybe another competitor would come along and snap it up because if that were to happen they they didn't notice. They didn't really use the word arm and you have so much notice like apple is probably gonna I, expect they're going to arm RV nine one of the first people to go to arm V nine when they release Mac silicon, and it's taken a decade to go from arm V. Eight V. Nine. I don't think there'd be an arm V ten anywhere sooner than apple could make their own instructions at anyway, he also cheaper than spending. Sixty four billion dollars to buy arm spent a tenth of that and get the engineers. Yeah, but they might even have the engineers they need. that. They need to end billion to do that. I like. Their money many other ways most of them better to solve problems right yeah. It's not a problem. We have to remember that apple is not moving to arm. They're moving to apple silicon, and it's all about building something, not not taking a an off the shelf off the shelf CPU, but building something really took it if you took it out of if he took it out of of a Macintosh or an I, O device, it just would. Accents outside of what it is, so so even if apple were to buy for the for the engineers, the engineers would have to spend two years learning how to build an apple CPI. Yeah I could see maybe Samsung or I could see somebody else looking to acquire. Even there was the savage tweet this morning from Ice Universe. WHO's one of the well known Samsung leakers? And he put up a little diagram, saying the world tells Samsung to make to to change the gap between qualcomm and Samsung. Samsung said Okay and it shows XS and os even lower down. Yeah, compared to. Like in that breaks, my heart because I wanna, see again welcomes. Costs are so high that that that that whole industry could stand a lot of competition. Yeah, yeah! Boy It's hard or or just once CPU with a name as coolest thread RIPA. I just your show room. It's like saying well. This car is has a standard V6. This one has a V6 with a heavy like okay. Don't know what that is, but here's my checkbook. There's a good example though if you don't have a lot of cash that the choices amd had to make between developing Radi on into better GPU or Making a better desktop processor they put their resources into the ladder. and He fell behind in graphics and That's where that's an example of where it's nice to have a piggy bank. Because a amd is a little precarious at this point Enthusiasts love it. Anytime I. Say anything against them. People are going to go. Do we love our thread represent? It's true. They made amazing stuff, but that doesn't mean that they're. They're not precarious position right competent silicon team given enough time and money can make the most performance efficient chip in the world. It's just not a lot of them. Have the money and none of them have the time. is just out of curiosity. Apples GonNa Fab, this probably at TSMC. That's where they'll make. It S and these guys are spun up and ready to do it right. Five nanometer there. I know it's amazing what they can do. TSMC only in Taiwan or do they have because one of the things I. You know we've talked about foxconn starting to build factories in India I think a lot of countries given the trade war going on in the political issues going on in the US right now are looking at ways to move manufacturing out of China Taiwan. Worried, not because they're part of China, but because China doesn't like Taiwan and they're right there. I feel like that might be a little precarious. It's less like it's. I don't WanNa say less important, but apple basically funds their process. Apple gives them so much equipment and money to get first access to it, and then they can sell it to other people that that that that's more movable then Fox cons because the Fox on manufacturing is really like it's a lot of components now. This isn't complicated, but I think it's. It's more resilient to be like setting up FABS and more places a lot of suppliers all over the world that they they're really assembler as much as anything else right? Yes, yeah, yes, TSMC. makes the chips there the. The ones down. It's the same way like Samsung stream. Samsung manufacturing makes. Or Samsung silicon makes. On manufacturing makes all ED panels. All of these suppliers, it's interesting world. one more arm story than we. We'll the move on Adelaide's. Apple yes, could be could be other appendages soon. We don't know promises that they're going to support thunderbolt. If Apple had said we won't support thunderball I mean they help develop that technology? It's partly there's partly until This is the statement. Apple gave verge over a decade ago. Has China lost Taiwan?
"Taiwan's president secured secured a second term over the weekend started scenes of the woman who stood up to China because China always believe China. Taiwan's recent election is widely seen as a watershed moment a referendum between Wayne. Two very different choices saw in win. She's the president since two thousand sixteen. She promised to protect Taiwan's freedoms from an increasingly assertive. He said he's an autocratic Beijing or the nationalist combing Tung came to the opposition which stressed causes ties with Beijing. The result a landslide two cy and her ruling independence leading Democratic Progressive Party. It was her warnings about China that hit home. We've voters this threat Israel with these respect from China situation has changed you. You cannot exclude the possibility of a war. And it's high invading. Taiwan is something that is going to be very costly fled China Taiwan's president saw in win on the basis now. She scored move odds than any other presidential candidate since Taiwan hi one began holding democratic elections in Nineteen ninety-six. So why has Beijing's efforts to control. Taiwan was it backfired and we'll China Now back off from what it sees as a renegade province remember most nations including the United States and Australia. We adhere to the one China policy which means we formally acknowledge Beijing's claims over Taiwan but what can Washington and camera do to help this vibrant democracy of twenty ninety four million in the face of arising China. Natasha Qassam is research fellow at the Lowy Institute for International Policy where she directs the annual Lowy Institute suit poll. She's a former Australian diplomat. And he wants is emeritus professor of Strategic Studies at the Australian National University and author of how to defend Australia. He's a former deputy defense secretary. Natasha Hugh Welcome to Iran. To be with you thanks for having is time now Natasha. Why has China lost the battle for public opinion in Taiwan? Look I do think there's a real question as to whether China ever had a chance in this respect. You've got a longstanding up position in Taiwan to unification with China. You've got a long standing position to one country. Two Systems the model that China developed in the eighties Fulbari Taiwan and Hong Kong. And of course we see the problematic way that's playing out in Hong Kong today but the most important issue here I think has been the emergence of a unique Taiwanese identity entity. This is what has really changed over the last decade the majority of Taiwanese people they see themselves as Taiwanese and in part this is in opposition to a growing authoritarian -tarian reach from China but in pilots a product of Taiwan's transition to democracy. It's unique history in terms of its different periods of colonization and indigenous peoples. I think today we can say that. This far more that divides Taiwan and China then unites them. Is that growing sense of independence in Taiwan. And Natasha you mentioned Hong Kong and how that was supposed to be the roadmap for China's One Country Two Systems policy the clearly rebuked in these elections hugh. How does Beijing you all these? Well I think they must be very gloomy very concerned and I think getting pretty angry because I completely agree with Tushar I think the elections very significant because it confirms assumes absolutely that the prospect of an eventual consensual reunification of Taiwan agreeing to be absorbed or reabsorbed helped by the mainland looks more and more remark and the problem for everyone including for Taiwan is that Beijing is very unlikely to accept except that Beijing for Beijing reunification as I sit bringing Taiwan back into China is an essential part of their agenda of Xi. Jinping's agenda to for the rejuvenation as he calls it off of China overcoming of that century of humiliation which which began with the opium wars lower back in the forties and which she has set himself to overcome overturn. I think for him getting Taiwan back as he I would say it is. There is nothing more important to him. Nothing more important to the Communist Party and so we have The seats of a real tragedy because as Natasha says it's clear and clear that the Taiwanese don't want to be part of China and it says clearest safe obtain the Chinese determined to make it part of I hear you say Washington Santon. Sorry Beijing won't accept Taiwan's growing assertiveness but hasn't by aging conduct here been counterproductive. I think of John is if it's to intensify military not exercises around the Taiwan Strait. If it's to US light diplomatically. A Taiwan a hasn't that just stiffened the resolve of the tonys. ESO expected. Has I think I think that's been effector I think is Natasha. Says I think what's happened in. Hong Kong has has disabused anyone in Taiwan of any illusions about what one-country-two-systems three two systems would really mean. If it was applied to talk to Taiwan I think the growing authoritarian nature of the Chinese Communist Party ruled in China itself under under Shuzhen Ping Has Added to that. Boils I think as Natasha says again. That that the the the long term development of Taiwan itself Tallinn's entity that the the evolution of a very vibrant democracy there Meant that perhaps. Whatever Beijing done even if Beijing it'd be much less frightening that it has been it still would have been unlikely that Taiwan would move voluntarily to do what Beijing once and it's actually is hugh why wrought out here and he's not alone? We've had on this program over the last few years Professor Jon Meacham from the University of Chicago. The argument here is that not only will China be much more powerful awful than it is today but it will also remain deeply committed to making Taiwan part of China. I think she's deadline. Is this attender of the Communist revolution. Which would be a twenty four nine in other words? Tom Is on China. Saad your response. I disagree that Taiwan is really significant priority for Xi Jinping's China. But I think it's important when we think about what their highest priority is and for me that is always the domestic legitimacy of the potty state and and so by Beijing's policies primarily directed at that domestic audience. They might be failing in Taiwan but suddenly what they ought designed to do is to demonstrate two people in China that Beijing holds all the cards that they have a able to exit military pressure on Taiwan that they can exclude Taiwan from international organizations and that is the highest priority and under Xi Jinping's China. I think the hotline inflexible policies will just continue for godless. The effect that they have in Taiwan. But at the same time I do think it's a self fulfilling prophecy to argue that China will become so powerful so we should roll over and do nothing and therefore it will allow be allowed to become even more all powerful in military and economic times. I think this is almost a given Alpha China. But it's not a given in terms of China's power. China's power has been restricted in the region winslow in many ways many countries including Australia do not recognize the ages over the as traders say. China hasn't succeeded in achieving. Its goals in the South China Sea. It hasn't succeeded in closing bases in Japan. There's that in South Korea in numerous ways. I wouldn't say that time is on China side if anything I I think. China as a rational actor recognizes the cost of a protracted war a much higher than the cost of their patients on that knowledge has as Shea Jingping pink overreach. The embroiled other countries led by the US but including Australia to a newly skeptical view of Chana. I look clearly Thomas. China's Powell grows as system becomes more authoritarian as the way it seeks to exhibit influence throughout the region becomes to put it politely a more assertive a lot of countries. You Niger and beyond becoming more and more worried about what. China's power and hatch on is going to use its power mains over the next few decades but that I think we'd be too optimistic to imagine that China is somehow becoming a self limiting problem. I do think Jonah's power has grown. I think it's influences growing there. It's I still true. Of course. There's Natasha is that there are lots of things at China would like it. It hasn't yet got but I'm more pessimistic than she is that about China's capacity not to get its way increasingly as time goes on and it's worth bearing in mind all the things that China does get that yes Not everyone accepts what China wants to do in the just south China Sea but Australia. Itself hasn't undertaken serious remove navigation operations Australia and self does not acknowledge China as a strategic rival. The United States does Japan treating China increasingly cool. She asleep as it becomes less and less confident about Donald Trump's America. And we'll push you. It's Responsibilities towards Japan onto the treaty. So I think actually China is doing pretty well. I think we've made a big mistake. To underestimate raced tonight. But China's resolve in its capacity to use. Its Influence to get what it wants. I guess. Hugh Watt for my new and Tasha Qassam from from lowy and we're talking about Taiwan and China in the wake of the all in democracies election widely seen as a rebuke to Beijing. The TASHA you say Beijing's going to weaken Taiwan's democracy house. Oh look I think I said that it was going to try and I think it is trying in many ways. It's trying through disinformation Ryan and bypassing more media outlets in Taiwan and then controlling the narrative in that way it is certainly trying to infiltrate grassroots organizations like temple organizations sations and farmers and fisheries groups. The thing is that Beijing is very much moving away. I think from trying to support. Just one side of politics. The Guangdong Minggong which has always been seen as more friendly towards Beijing insofar as has been unsuccessful because the dog is not able to as. We've all of the reasons since we've already outlined. They are not able to deliver Taiwan in any way because of the way of public opinion against China. So now I believe that Beijing is trying to undermine undermine the democracy itself to undermine people's faith in institutions trying to essentially mess it up I think the best expression I've had tended into Crimea so that you have a government paralyzed a government that people do not trust and in that way the system would be much weaker. You Natasha to agree that Beijing is going to try awaken Taiwan's democracy and certainly badging will increase the pressure to open talks on reunification. I suppose the question here is wise. China so sensitive about Taiwan one. I mean think about it Taiwan or Formosa as it was earlier known. It's only been part of China for something like four out of the past one hundred twenty twenty five years since Japanese colonization nineteen ninety-five four out of one hundred twenty five and those four years when the nationalists who fled to Taiwan. They were running the mainland alien so why the sensitivity. He what. We'll Tom Because one hundred and twenty five years is not very long time in the way of China's paypal and the Chinese government see themselves CBS and has precisely one hundred and twenty five years that I see correctly in some ways as being a very black period in the history and that the the great mission of the Communist Party has been to bring China out of that as I said before the rejuvenation of the Chinese people. It's hard to underestimate. Overestimate the the emotional power Al behind this idea of China returning to its previous position and Taiwan has become a and the Chinese Communist Party has made Taiwan into a a symbol of everything bad that happened to China before and everything that Diane resolved to fix and the way in which they they put Hong Kong back into into the fold the YM which have grown their economy the way in which they have reasserted China's military power and have trying at least to reassert itself the parish cultural pass at a speak. All of that is part of the deal but Taiwan is in a sense that the jewel in the crown for them and so I think the the political political and to a certain extent the emotional fright that the Taiwan issue carries does make it absolutely central to the Communist. Party's not just its own sense of itself but it's confidence that it can continue command. The loyalty and achieved legitimacy in the eyes of the Chinese people as what Communist Party delivers not just in terms of prosperity but in terms of China's dignity and position in the world symbolized by Taiwan that is so central to its legitimacy as the government of China Anna. And does that mean Natasha Qassam. That is now a very real danger that the listen Beijing takes from size relection. Is that the only way. Taiwan will ever a unify with mainland China. As at the end of a gun. Look that's entirely possible but I have to say I'm not convinced that as an argument mainly because we like to think think of China's military palate in terms of it being this very quick victory. RV Taiwan because they are coming late outgunned in that sense but none nothing about this would be. It would be very difficult to take Taiwan in terms of its geography and even an invasion is really just the beginning. When you have twenty four a million people who don't want to be a part of your country you have? Refugees flocking to other countries in the region including Australia. You'll have resistance in the streets. You'll have disruption to global supply chains at which Taiwan lies at. Its hot this is not an easy proposition. It is laden with

Such as Cisco Ericsson Nokia, Bloomberg intelligence is John Butler said there should be some concern is five G becomes the global standard. In twenty sixteen was to take a phone call from Taiwan's president sighing when it isn't unusual, of course for world leaders to speak on the telephone. But he represented a potentially significant shift in the relationship between the United States when it was after all the first time that one of the self governed island's leaders and a US president the believed of spoken since motion and Taipei seven diplomatic ties in the nineteen seventies. The United States of America and the people are. Of China have agreed to recognize each other and to astonish diplomatic relations knots. Then US president Jimmy Carter speaking nineteen Seventy-nine the government of the United States of America acknowledges, the Chinese position that there is but one China and Taiwan is part of Chun dramatic change in policy, including recognition from the white. Would did Beijing strict when China policy he was in essence a diplomatic acknowledgement? There was only one Chinese government. So had Donald Trump's phone. Call would sign when changed all that. This is what the right wing commentator. John Bolton told the broadcast of Fox News shortly after Trump was elected. Honestly, I should shake this relationship at the past several years, China has made aggressive I would say near belligerent claims in the South China Sea, they declared it to be a Chinese province. They've established a provincial capital. They're trying to put their hands around the throats. Economies Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and others a direct impact on the United States. "A Chinese military official is warning the US navy today not to interfere in support of Taiwan's independence. The comment came during a meeting in Beijing with the US chief of naval operations, and it's after a speech earlier this month by China's president Xi Jinping, he said mainland, China and Taiwan must unify and he didn't rule out the use of force to make that happen. Taiwanese? President Cy ING wen responded with tough language of her own marking a low point in the state of China-Taiwan relations. Bonnie Glaser is director of the China Power project at the center for strategic and international studies. She joins us welcome. Thanks for having made. So she's comments got a lot of attention. But what is he saying exactly's he actually threatening use of military force? Well, it's long been China's position to leave the option of using force against Taiwan on the table. But actually, see Jinping's message was one that emphasized peaceful. We. Fixation? He was conveying that China is determined to unify Taiwan with mainland China. But he actually wasn't banging the war drums in any way. He was really talking more about the strategy over time to win the hearts and minds of the people of Taiwan. Will what was the reaction from Taiwan though to this trying to win the hearts and minds strategy. Well, Taiwan reacted very negatively in part because see Jin ping repeated this offer of one country two systems which was originally designed for Taiwan but his implemented in Hong Kong. And we've seen such an erosion of freedom in Hong Kong that it's really not surprising that that the people reacted in a way that was quite negative one survey that was done after siege in ping speech found that about eighty percent of the Taiwanese people disapprove of this formula as applied to. Taiwan. They don't trust CI when he says one country two systems know, the people of Taiwan, I think really jealously guard their freedoms and their democracy. They want to have good economic ties with mainland China. They wanna be able to travel back and forth, but they generally see themselves as living in a separate country. There's a small percentage of people that want reunification really about three percent that want reunification immediately. And maybe about fifteen percent that would like reunification eventually most people just want the status quo, and they're still about on the other end of the spectrum about the eighteen percent that eventually won independence will Taiwan has self-governance, but never formally declared independence from mainland China China as you say has long called for reunification. But why do you think the rhetoric seems to be stepping up now? Well, I think first of all this is siege. In Ping's, first speech that he's given on Taiwan. Even though he became general secretary the party in two thousand twelve and he hasn't looked for an occasion to give speech. This was the fortieth anniversary of what's called the message to Taiwan compatriots when Deng Xiaoping change from the policy of liberating Taiwan likely through force to this new approach of peaceful reunification. And so he was almost obligated to say something on this anniversary, and he decided to give a very comprehensive speech. What is it stake for the US in all of this while the United States has very strong abiding interests in the maintenance of peace and stability across the strait. And we have seen Beijing step up military pressure, diplomatic pressure stolen, lot of Taiwan's diplomatic allies in recent years. And so there is a danger. I. A threat to Taiwan's autonomy. The United States has an interest in having the people on the two sides of the strait workout their differences peacefully, and the people of Taiwan right now, as I said really just don't wanna be part of the People's Republic of China will we remember the controversy after then president elect Trump spoke on the phone with the leader of Taiwan after he was elected. This was a break from US policy has Trump's election changed the situation at all between China and Taiwan. Do think well, I think it has particularly that phone call. I think it raised concerns in Taiwan that the President Trump might actually do something that would be very forward leaning in Taiwan that might provoke an attack from Beijing. But of course, it raised even more alarm in Beijing that maybe Trump with somehow established diplomatic ties or or break. Some other precedents in policy toward Taiwan say really raised concerns on on on both sides of the strait though, there were of course, people in Taiwan that saw it as a wonderful opportunity..

It will stand on a wall on defend this country to the Admiral Stavridis, some what if you could just sort of use your navel and strategic background in the context of China and a book that you have recommended called on desperate ground, and what we should take away from reading this book by Hampton sides about China and understanding them, not only from a military and trade perspective. But from a political and cultural perspective. Yeah, terrific question. The book is about the Korean war, and it's a cautionary tale for modern times. Right. In other words, we know what? War on the Korean peninsula, would look like hundreds of thousands if not millions dead that was before there were nuclear weapons involved. So a we ought to take the cautionary message and be we ought to. Remember when China's back was pushed to the wall by MacArthur with US troops surging north. They responded they responded hard. They pushed us all the way back down that peninsula. We should not underestimate China's will in a military conflict. So I wouldn't say we're quite on desperate ground yet between the US and China, but skirmishes lead to wars we need to be very cautious and careful in how we deal with China. Global news twenty four hours a day on Aaron a talk on Twitter powered by more than twenty seven hundred journalists and analysts in more than one hundred twenty countries in San Francisco, I'm Ed Baxter. This is Bloomberg. All right. Let's take a closer look at the story on apple Bob O'Donnell is with us. He is the president and chief analyst at technologists research pleasure to have you on the program for those who kind of follow this company closely. There was anecdotal evidence that we were walking into a season of week iphone demand. Was this surprising to you when they guided lower on first-quarter results. Absolutely. I mean, you know, apple hasn't done a vision. Dour for white apparently almost fifteen years. So this is a very unusual step, particularly because earlier just a few months back. They expected this quarter to be one of their best. So a number of things hit them. Obviously we've seen that those price points that they had for the iphone sippy are too high for most consumers, and that really hit home and people just weren't willing to upgrade. And we've also seen the overall extension of sparked for lifetimes because people think they're spark phones are good enough. Then finally, most importantly, the impact of the trade war. I think isn't so much on the tariffs in China. But the fact that there's really more nationalism. Now, apple, of course, being seen as major US company and Chinese citizens starting to rebel a bit and going more towards away and people and uphold these other major Chinese domestic so very interesting combination of factors here that led to this restatement, so Bob this is Stephen Engle is this a new norm for apple. Or will a new killer product solve all ills. Even you know, look of apple is always managed to pull tricks out of his hat. But I think it's gonna take some time before the next rabbit pops out to be honest with you they are expected to launch a video service this year. But you know, look they face competition from net flicks. Dizzy is going to do something as well. So that's going to be tough. And you know, they talked a lot about doing a are Dion and people expect them to do some sort of glasses or headset. But probably twenty twenty other challenge has even in the smartphone market where I phones are struggling a bit. Apple is also not going to have a five G capable phone this year. Now, admittedly, not everybody wants one but apple seen as being cutting edge. Traditionally, and they're going to be very late to the game on that technology as well as foldable screen, so all in all things are looking a little tough. Not to be honest. You surprising for those of us who watch apple for a long time. Everybody knew this point was going to happen was just a question of when and how so what what are they forced with now to cut prices as a way of maintaining growth. I do think they're going to have to cut prices. We saw a little bit of that over the holidays. They started to offer some discounts. I think you'll see the continue for them to continue to do that. I think we'll we may see revision in the frequency of iphone updates. It's hard to say for sure exactly what they're gonna do. There. Obviously have been building the services business for several years now. And I think they're going to continue to do that as I said with video service with other things maybe this is the year as well. Let's not throughout this possible. Responsibility that they finally make some kind of major purchase like a Netflix or a Disneyland tesla or some crazy big purchase that have all been rumored in the past. Maybe this change forces their hand and makes them consider something that they didn't really want to do before. Bob. Thank you for joining us and giving us your inside. Bob McDonald, Donald there. This is Bloomberg got. All right. We are joined now on the line by Kevin Nicholson. He's the COO at river shares division riverfront investment group. Kevin pleasure to have you on the program. We've been talking about apple and trying to understand whether this is a company specific story or whether really describes a little on the macro of what's going on in China. What's your sense? My sense is that the market is really looking at trade right now. And as long as, you know, China's slowing, and and we're not getting a trade deal. I think that you're going to continue to see more and more companies are going to have issues. I mean, China's economy as a whole the domestic side is slowing. But what you're seeing is that the PM is on the services, I have been higher than what you're seeing on the manufacturing side. So I think that you know, as long as China as long as we don't have a trade agreement. You're gonna continue to see these. Flare ups for all companies. Absolutely, given this is just a there's too much put under the manufacturing side of the Chinese economy. Given the services the non-manufacturing side. It's a good deal lodge at two. That's exactly right. I mean, the service side accounts for more than fifty percent of the Chinese economy, and really, you know, there's a dichotomy here. It's really about the stimulus that the Chinese government is doing I think you'll see the domestic side picked up. But I think that you know, the manufacturers is gonna continue to suffer for the foreseeable future. Especially if there's no trade deal dot. Yeah. One of the things we were talking about earlier before the program actually during a production meeting was the collateral damage in many of the Connie's yesterday. It was the week GDP coming out of Singapore and the export data for South Korea. Also disappointing today earlier with many of the markets, and those ETF's the trade here in the states took it on the chin. We can talk more about this Kevin and a strategy going forward, particularly an environment where now questions around.

Is that play is that like? Yes. So sports certainly is and flirting probably as part of play. But I think that's not what you're thinking. I think what you're conveying is like moving multi joins at once without knowing the the outcome, right? And also having finding that passion finding the joy finding you know, the fun in it. And and and that's one of my big topics is now and in in the schools is is getting people to to recognize that this is part of who we are. And what you okay. So who we are as movers were players. And we're we're good eaters. We're good eaters and were sleepers, and we're those four is there anything else. So sure we're you Don here in most of each year in nature all the time. Okay. But that's not the way most people live anymore. Unless you mid west and west, but he think of China Taiwan, you'd think of South Korea. I mean, it is they're not outside. The they're not side. We're not outside in the east is much because we have to wear coats, no coats out here. What have you learned about? What happens in the brain? Or? Yeah. Let's go the brain. When people are in nature in nature. You're you're Serta level. I mean, you know, just done to the fine. Tune your serotonin levels are higher dopamine levels are higher. You are more alert. You're more feel more passionate. You know, feeling wise. Your immune system is better. I mean, all these things change so fifteen years ago. There was a big flurry about nature deficit disorder. I remember that. Yeah. Yeah. You know, and that's real. And it's real like, for instance. I love this it, okay, cardiac rehab unit where they just did cardiac surgery on people. They there's no windows. Okay. No windows, but they did this study they put up a scene much like your waterfall here on this is the poster in a picture of one of the athletes coming over Peluso falls. Just the idea of of seeing that as opposed to a blank wall. Less medicine, less pain earlier, dismissal NAS just seeing it. They're just having the picture there. Less pain, less painless medicine for for pain and quicker recovery out of the hospital. If you take a test in front of that as opposed to taking tests in front of a blank wall, you'll do better and that being the picture of nature picture poster of of nature, or if you have an open window. So if you take the pit of research. Okay, that's interesting. If we take the bit of research that learning in the environment as close as possible to the actual environment. You're going to be tested in that strategy facilitates better memory performance. Okay. So would you suggest that if you study with pictures of nature, but then you're going to test without pictures of nature? Is there any kind of competition? No, no, no, no, no. You're gonna you're gonna you're gonna get it down. But but no, it's not like you wanna use the practice environment with as many, different strategies. You can one of would be having some sort of picture or open window to nature. Okay. I'm gonna go one. This is more plied stuff for me for us. I think is that. "I'm Marco werman and you're with the world, thousands of students in Taiwan, joined a protests. The source of their frustration is the toefl exam. That's the test of English as a foreign language that many Taiwanese students need to take to get into college. The reason they're not happy about the test has nothing to do with the test questions themselves. It's about politics. I've got the BBC, Cindy, sue on the line from Taipei. To tell us more. So what exactly are the students upset about? Cindy last month. Some students noticed that on the website of the nonprofit US organization that administers the tofu test, it's called the educational testing service ETS on their website. They've changed the way they refer to Taiwan as Taiwan, comma China, that in the past they simply refer to Taiwan under dropdown menu of countries in locations. But somehow they changed the designation of Taiwan and dad has upset. A lot of students shows because they see Taiwan as a sovereign independent country, not a part of China. So Dr prompted the students to write letters to ETS, to protests into demand that they change it back to Taiwan. So this is kind of a matter of patriotism for these students? Yes. In identity, it's actually an ongoing issue is a huge controversy. Sometime over the past year, China has finally had enough with companies including airlines, hotels. And even fashion labels referring to Taiwan as a country. So it sent out letters to a lot of companies, including United Airlines, Marriott hotels, and Zara, a fashion brand to demand that they changed the way they refer to Taiwan on their websites or face consequences. For instance, having to websites being shut down in China. So a lot of companies have complied or found a neutral way of dealing with this very controversial divisive issue. And it seems like now a China's going after not only companies, but even nonprofit organizations and ETF is one of the the ones that would directly before by young people on both sides. Because if they want to study abroad proved their English proficiency tests. I mean the the Topol tests is you say, administered by the educational testing service TSA are a massive organization. They run GRE and a lot of other standardized tests. What reason did ETS gift for changing the name of Taiwan? Each years has been lying low. It has. Given interviews to the media. I've seen reporting about this and I've already emailed them and they haven't written back to me. But you know, if you look at the numbers, I mean they have a lot more mainland Chinese students taking this test and Taiwanese students about thirty percent of the international students studying in the US art mainland Chinese students in the some six hundred thousand mainland Chinese. Students chose to study abroad last year and only sixty thousand one tenth that figure from Taiwan. So you know, you can tell did make a lot more money from the mainland Chinese students signing up for these tests and another thing Sunday, just this week, trying to accuse Taiwanese intelligence agencies of preying on Chinese students. If feels like something new is going on here. What is it? Something dramatically different has happened in the past two years in a previously, we had the best relations between the two sides since the end of the Chinese civil war in one thousand nine hundred eighty nine. But since two thousand sixteen when the current Taiwanese president tying one was elected relations have been deteriorating ever. Since. And the reason for that is because presidents high does not want to meet Beijing's demand that she agreed to so call nine hundred ninety two consensus, which under Beijing's definition defines Taiwan and mainland China. As part of one, China Taiwan is part of the Chinese psyche. The identity of Chinese people that they do not want to let go of this island. So I it, it doesn't trust presidents highs administration, basically. So it's finding all kinds of ways to make things difficult for her. And as a result for Taiwanese people, the BBC's Cindy, sue speaking with us from Taipei. Thank you very much, Cindy. Thank you. "Where does all this leave Taiwan. Well, Taiwan species steadily shrinking, actually, Taiwan is going to be one of the major, the Tim's of Trump's trade war ironically enough because because because of the complexity of of global trade in the crudity of American tariffs, if you look at who who is actually in the top hundred China-based companies who trade with the US twelve percent or American about seventy percent not Chinese at all and Taiwan account. So more than thirty percent so that the tariffs that Trump is is posing on China or actually going to hit Taiwan pretty hard. I the moment the trade between Taiwan and China has not been targeted, but the Chinese have been showing conspicuous friendship towards the Gorman, dang leadership and conspicuous hostility to the current leadership of Taiwan. So it is as it were a situation, normal only escalated. We've had Chinese military maneuvers around Taiwan. We've had a lot of the kind of rhetorical escalation so far, nothing concrete in terms of China and Taiwan. How much longer do you think Taiwan can with stunned Beijing's external pressure. It's slightly depends on what Beijing targets. I mean, Taiwan is given its difficulties remarkably successful country. It has a thriving economy. It has a pretty solid political foundation that has a democracy which which functions extremely well set me better than anything else in the Chinese world. I think that it would be an extreme case.
