Partly cloudy today, a high of seventy three early much cooler today at the lakefront will stay in the low sixties downtown but falling back into the upper fifties by noon back to forty five degrees by late this afternoon at the lakefront, another round of showers late tonight, mainly between nine pm and two AM. Some of those good be severe then Wednesday mostly cloudy, chance of a few scattered thunderstorms early lingering from the overnight hours and then otherwise little sunshine, eventually Wednesday with highs near seventy right now. It's mostly cloudy and sixty eight degrees at O'Hare same at the lake front. I'm Vic Vaughn in the WGN radio newsroom. And these are the stories that matter on seven twenty WGN. Chinese menu. Nick Gilio here on seven twenty WGN. We are live in the AllState skyline studio here until five AM Steve Grzanich, as the opening bell at five, and then the great Steve Cochran at six and we're talking about. Unfortunate mascots. And I happen to have a weakness for mascots. They just make me laugh. They just I don't know. I have no idea. You know it just, you know, like, for instance. The, the sausage race at at Miller park is one of my favorite things on earth. And, and now, the, the president's race in Washington. Stupid, costumes. My god. I'm trying to remember. I always forget, they always forget the name of the of the player he ended up on the cubs. He was on the cubs at the time. Somebody will remember it wasn't on the cubs at the time, but he actually smacked one of the one of the sausages, and with a baseball bat when they were running by. He actually smacked one of them. Randall, simon. That's it. Yeah. Exactly. I, I got that whispered into my ear I could not tell who was. But I'm gonna say it was a Bob Fukuda. I think Bob's here. Yeah. Right. Was it was a nice job. Yeah. That was it was. This was before he was a cub, but he smacked, one of the he smacked one of the sausages. They running past the dugout. Hit and it was a woman in the costume, too. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Jeez. That's. I think he got fined if I'm not mistaken. I think he got fined and disciplined. Smacking a smack in a mascot with a baseball bat. All right. How about this one? The Amarillo SOX mascot has a very suspicious, bulge. Being a mascot for a team called the socks is a curse. Not only does it mean to you have to do cartwheels for minimum wage while dressed, as a sweaty sock. But there are so many socks out there that there's hardly any way to stand out from the mascot crowd. But one team found an answer. To that non-problem and the result was a massive poke in the eye. When the new Texas Armadillo SOX mascot was involved in two thousand eleven friends were shocked that he had a big stiff stocking. Yes. Designers had given him a huge, bulge at a ninety degree angle right at crotch level. By the way, this thing is ridiculous. Someone needs to get fired is just ridiculous. Even the team itself admitted that it looked like a banana with with an erection. General manager, Mark Lee quickly nixed it saying, I'm watching twenty five to thirty little kids having a ball with him in their parents were sitting there thinking something else. The team quickly auctioned off the costume on EBay. To one lucky. Fetishists. And if since moved on to become the Texas Air hogs. We're too frightened to look up with that mascot looks like. I love the bay auctioned off the Kosta. What, what does that even mean? Here's one. The Japanese son wolves mascot looks like a nightmarish werewolf monster. This thing is terrifying. Tom of you've seen this thing. Yeah, I because that's the rugby team right? Yeah. Yeah. I used to watch a little bit of Japanese rugby on the side. And it's terrifying. This is really frightening. Well, the Japanese are the I mean mascot culture. Yes. You yeah. Yeah, yeah. No, it's huge over there, usually, they're like, generally pretty lovable in this thing is this is nightmare inducing. Yeah. From the howling in intimidation is an important strategy. And rugby the only sport that let's teams perform warrior battle chance to terrify their opponents into surrendering, so it would make sense for their mascots that aren't the mascots aren't pushovers either. But one Japanese team may have taken that mentality a bit too far. Choosing a mascot who looks like he just tore the neck out of a bunny rabbit. In two thousand sixteen Japan's rugby team. The sun wolves, chose a wolf as their mascot one, whose custom looks less like something warned by Michael J, FOX and more. Like something worn by deranged serial killer. The mascot is so terrifying that fans voided the supposed ambassador of cheer and children were too scared to even take pictures with them. Fortunately, this nightmare spirit from unauthorised full tail only lasted for one season when the fans unanimous hatred of it convinced the team to give the wolf makeover resulting in a more. Happy looking cartoon, Pell, whoa, v. This thing is really, it's really terrifying. No way that, that would work. Let's see. L Fredo deduct says great show is always the mascot for polo Illinois is the Marcos. That's right, polo Marcos. Skin, thumbs down. The Prince Albert raiders. Have an inexplicably racist, mascot. I'm looking at this thing to these are just not good. I don't know. I've people need need to be fired. With the team. With a team name like Prince Albert raiders, the possibilities for a mascot or nearly endless, there's the Royal angle. There's the pirate angle. There's even the budget friendly guy in tin, canning angle, you know the other angle. But for some reason, the Saskatchewan junior hockey team decided that all of those were two obvious, and they went for something a bit more of the left field and Arabic, stereotype. In two thousand fourteen the raiders introduced Riley, a cartoonish looking head scarf wearing Middle Eastern guy. And why would an all white Canadian hockey team called the raiders have this as their mascot, according to them? It wasn't meant to be offensive, but to pay homage to their original mascot, or even more blatant Arab stereotype. Unsurprisingly. This was met with a huge backlash from everyone the team quickly pulled the mascot in reintroduce Riley, the raider as more of a cartoon dude, who's friendly and silly. Who's favorite hobbies include quote dog walking at the SPCA and hugs? As into hugs. Yeah. Nothing, you know, I'm a raider. I like hug. Yeah. Yeah. I mean when you know they think they're hockey very seriously up there, man. Oh my God is this thing offensive. I'm looking at another two different pictures of it. How did they even get away with it? Man, I know is I guess, a different time at one point. He said it was it's a reference to their original mascot. Yeah. Well, man. All right. How about this? The Richland high mascot is a mushroom cloud. Mascots are for everything mascot for everything sports team stores, annual events that time America drop nuclear bombs onto cities and killed hundreds of thousands of civilians everything. The people of Richmond Washington are still very proud of their contributions to the mat to Manhattan project and know whereas it more obvious than in their schools team, the Richland bombers. Apparently the specter of humanity's annihilation is something to school is so keen on that they will put a mushroom cloud about everything. Some alumni, have even tattooed the mushroom cloud on their arms, which must lead to many proud conversations at bars convincing women that no, they don't have a tattoo of a fart. It's an actual celebration of mass murder. Oh man. Yeah. This is this is quite the logo. I just feel like our mascot was the Tigers. I was at. Yeah. We got a mushroom. We were the high school. We were the Wildcats. Nice. I once was Willie the wildcat. You were mascot. Yeah. Wow. And they immediately regretted that they let me in the costume because like during the actual football game, I actually ran out onto the field. I interfered and I was knocking things out. I was like, knocking cokes out of people's hands and. And let me explain something to you. First of all. That Willie the wildcat costume needed to be laundered. It was disgusting. But yeah, I was they totally regretted get chilly. Get off the field. What are you doing? Oh man. Yeah. So. Yeah, I was really I was Willie the wildcat for one day, not even a full game. I think they were like get off. Get off the field. Take off the costume. You, you. You do not deserve to be Willie. The wildcat. To see what were you like fifteen fifteen six? Yeah. Yeah. Oh, god. I was a sophomore SaaS fifteen. I think when when I did it but. Yeah, it was. You know. They immediately were like this is this guy does definitely did not deserve to be Willie the wildcat, so all right? More mascot mascot weirdness following. "Chicago weather center, forecast, rain, overnight, a low of thirty two Thursday Radi. Windy, a high of forty seven then those temperatures will plummet by Friday, partly cloudy, only high of fifteen degrees thirty three at O'Hare thirty five at midway thirty three along Chicago's lakefront. Next news updates at nine o'clock. I'm Andrea darlas. These are the stories that matter on Chicago's very own seven twenty WGN. Thanks. Andrea. Special coverage of the Chicago mayoral election. You just heard from some of the candidates who want to be the next mayor and are WGN radio. Crain's Chicago business form hosted by Anna davlantes, Greg Hines. We'll break down what we heard and get the perspective. Some of the candidates not invited to the forum. Be later in this half hour, then turn our attention to the bigger picture. You may be listening right now feeling you have no skin in the game. You don't live in Chicago. And so why do I care about who the next mayor is going to be well, it matters because the mayor of Chicago and the policies he or she puts forth, we'll have implications for the collar counties northwest, Indiana, Springfield, and downstate, Illinois. And in recent years, the mayor of Chicago has been a lobbyist not just for big projects here at home, but for the future direction of the country, whether it's federal grants infrastructure. Mass transit or education or social social societal issues like gun and drug trafficking. Chicago is front and center. We've assembled a great panel to discuss these issues and more carry lesser is the executive director for the center of Illinois politics lesser is a former senior writer and editor for the daily herald. And Associated Press carry thanks for being here. Here we go. Doc columnist over Chicago magazine, also writes for political and other publications Carol great to see you thanks for being here, and Michael Puente longtime journalist for Chicago public media. He covers news and issues primarily in northwest, Indiana, Chicago, south east side, and south suburbs. Mike appointee. Good to see you. Good to see you just an all right? So I'm glad that you're all here. Thanks for coming in. And it's very exciting to to broadcast after this forum. First off it has been forum heavy in Chicago in the last week and a half, it feels like these these these candidates are polished at this point. And I think we heard that tonight. Carol I feel like what we heard was the the same things that we've been hearing over and over in forums over the last couple of weeks new, but I always like the conflict, and I like the back and forth that I didn't hear all. But by heard a lot of really angry back and forth between Toni preckwinkle and Susanna really at the top to talk about corruption. Really, I think that they could be the two who emerged from the runoff in may be Bill Daley. But Mendoza really went after preckwinkle and day. We for being too old. Carrie, I mean, does do we does the democratic process? Take a I don't know if the right word to take a hit or take a back seat when you have so many forums and opportunities for these candidates say the same things over and over absolutely Justin especially in this race. I phrase that we throw around in the news industry. A lot is mile wide inch deep, but I feel like that describes these forums in a nutshell because you can't get past these talking points. You can't get past these forty seconds sound designed that way. I mean, I think the candidates tonight at thirty seconds or forty five cents not not and to be able to get a lot of it has to do with the amount of candidates, Mike. I mean, you're talking in this one they at least cut back and said there were nine of the fourteen that we're actually on stage. But I mean to be. Able to get any sort of debate or form in an amount of time. You got to keep these things short. And I think the one who suffered it suffered from it. The most was Gary, Chico. He just sounded. So scripted didn't really get off script right there. He's memorized it. I've never raised. It. You gotta you gotta kinda just jump in. And some of these some of these so-called debates the kind of turning it almost like into wrestling matches. But that's kind of good just almost make you like Anaya lock. You got an idea baked make it into a full blown argument. Like, we're going to get in here. Michael into your point. I think at one point ended devante said perjury, Chico. He's just sitting here. Silence. Everybody else is fighting over a certain and there has to be. Yeah. There has to be a fine line. Right. I mean gear Chico can't be jumping over the rules in the formats if Lori Lightfoot is talking or president preckwinkle is talking. He's got to wait his turn. But at the same time he can't be too passive to MRs opportunity to jump in. And. If you're gonna be Chicago mayor, but I thought that one of the best lines of the fifteen or twenty minutes that I've listened to was when Mendosa said she's a mother of a six year old and her six-year-old goes to see PL. She says it all the time. She said she'd be the first mayor, and I forget how many decades she said we as a child in the public schools, and you listened to Toni preckwinkle, she is always saying, I'm the grandmother. CPS students, and I go about in report for profiles and stuff that I'm writing I always want to ask my subjects whether they send their kids to the public schools and everybody always including my husband says, it's it's a relevant. Like, I always thought it was really interesting that Rahm Emanuel. So to get to the university of Chicago laboratory schools, but my and everybody else has stay away from Mendosa didn't. There's something to be said about I don't know if it seems that everyone's going for their authentic Chicago card. I grew up here. I know the neighbors neighborhood was thrown around a lot of their own personal experience. It was and I thought, you know, you hear a Toni preckwinkle stick to talking points most of the time, but towards the end of the debate she revealed that when she was a CPS teacher that she had a student that was killed by gun violence, and she said really rocked her school community, and that's more personal than I've heard Tony get in a long time. Mike point say Carey, Lester and Carol fills in to all my guests tonight. We got lots unpack three one two nine eight one seventy two hundred I want to know what you thought of the forum tonight, which was well done and Greg did a great job of of moving it along and getting it's really hard in any situation when you have to get nine people. What do you make of keeping people out there candidates that that for whatever reason were not invited to this? And that's another thing where to see tomorrow. I think FOX's only having five of the candidates. What's your take on on on meeting? Some of these candidates might well, this is my view, obviously, I worked for public radio. So we're very con-. You know, we're always on trying to be really fair to everybody. But I do kinda feel that you know, you got to your campaign will will will tell it all whether you should be invited. Whether you should be on that stage. There's a lot of people running. I mean, look at it right now. Look how many people were on stage. I mean, Gary Chico who's on there? Couldn't even hear from. You didn't hear too much Willie Wilson his idea? He's a self made billionaire. I know about that could keep saying it, but at the same time, you don't like to see candidates left off. But at the same time you have to you know, you've got to push that candidacy, and there's a reason why certain maybe people maybe they gotta strive harder. There used to be a scientific way of doing it. And I was a note that one of the I guess was Anna said that these people are going to come in to WGN, and they're gonna get. At the beginning. But you know, I love to talk politics, and I'll talk politics to anybody in my neighbors, and stopping to pet dogs whatever, and nobody knows they're voting for including members of my family, and they're not doing early voting because they don't know I had dinner with somebody yesterday who said that after a lot of thought she's decided to vote for Bill Daley. But most people, including me, I don't know who to vote now. I know we all have our journalists hats on we've worked together for a long time. But there is something exciting about not having an election where you case the front runner, and this there's something about this that I myself. I look at him like, you know, what this is a lot harder of for me as a voter. I have to do my work to find out who I want as opposed to a party anointing somebody or, you know, this is this is how I usually vote. So these are. These are the issues that I care about so go for this candidate because that's who they put up it's exciting. And I want to see more I want to see it like you're talking about one more wrestling match to I want to see these candidates get into it right now. Because after the twenty six because there is certainly we could we could that our homes that nobody's gonna win outright. So we're gonna have a runoff in. That's going to be fascinating in one of the things that Susan Mendoza kept saying that that she kept referring to the next mayor. She I think she really sees it as and. One of the things that Gary McCarthy said was that he said, I'm not from here is people remind me all the time and reveals every time me, and so that's kind of a distinguishing. Yeah. Carry that. Maybe they could help him more than hurt him. I don't know. And to me, I don't know about you guys. But what's fascinating about this races that you really have three females as the front runners, and they're the aggressive go-getters. And they're the ones that are are coming out of the box with with these going at each other going at each other. I totally resists the term catfight stomachs me somewhat enraged. But at the same time, you have big names like daily sort of taking a back seat at these panels to the prac- winkles and Mendoza. You're absolutely right. I, you know, tonight listening to the to the forum Bill Daley with another voice that that he popped up, and he didn't really feel like he was a front runner. He was there. The feel was everybody wanted something. They wanted a piece of Toni preckwinkle that had the field. You say there's not a front runner up really from an outsider looking in. It feels like Toni preckwinkle is sort of the front runner heading. Yeah. She's got a lot of controversy surrounding your Susanna Mendoza. I don't want to anoint anybody. But really from somebody looking into the race from the outside point of view. They definitely were going after her Toni preckwinkle because maybe she's kind of. Well, I mean come on. She's the party ball. He's the chairman of the the county party president of the county board. They're gonna go after. Okay. Let me let me ask this. And then we'll just we'll take a break. And then I want to bring in some of the candidates are going to call in that were omitted tonight. But this if you would ask me three months ago, I would have said that this election was a referendum on relevant new. This would have been okay. This is how he ran the city, and we like it or we don't like it. I also would have said, you know, the violence issue in this town is going to be front and center in the last month. I would tell you tonight sitting here that it's about corruption. And it's about, you know, everything we've seen with alderman, Burke, and alderman Sali's. What what is this mayor's race about care? I think that you're right. That Rahm Emanuel. I would never expect them to be such a unsquashed quiet lame duck. And he really is he's putting his efforts. If you watch them on the with the ABC Sunday morning. You see him all over? Yes. He I haven't read it. But he's got a piece in the Atlantic. We saved the Chicago public schools. This is a guy who I predict this will go to work for his friend. Michael Sachs, we'll make a ton of money the eighteen million. He made in the three years when he left the Clinton administration is going to be nothing he'll put their way, and he is back in national politics. And you look at the national senior Bloomberg and you have the Blasi, oh, it's kind of the air of the mayor and ram wants to be. He wants to be Pressler cabinet officer in between. What do you think? Kerry. What is this? What is this election about? Well, I wrote this down as I was coming here to the studio tonight, Justin Laurie like fit called this election about the crumbling remnants of the broken Chicago machine. And I think in a nutshell, that's it. It's how much of the old Chicago days are going to stick around in the future. And how much is going to be dismantled. And that really wasn't capsulated on. I think it was November twenty nine th when the feds. Papered efforts. Now. Mike. What do you think? What what is this is this election really about it?.

"The WGN Chicago weather center. It's going to be selling today. High near forty down to Twenty-eight tonight, though, there's sunny day tomorrow and Forty-five it's twenty six right now, I'm Steve Grzanich to the WGN radio newsroom. And. And these are the stories that matter on seven twenty WGN live from the skyline studio. This is the Steve Cochran show on seven twenty WGN famous story in Chicago radio about a guy who is working with someone and they didn't necessarily get along as a team, by the way. This is not about me. And they decide what was going to be in the show was going to be on the show. It's called shipwreck. And there's an argument over a particular story that the other person wanted to do because the other person wanted to do a story about a boy that get trapped in a refrigerator and out elected so much you live there. What the person who pitched that story? Didn't know was that was in the onion because they didn't know the onion was a fake newspaper. So with that in mind when I saw the headline Pete the groin crusher has crashed ten thousand patients grinds without a single sweat as in the Philadelphia, Inquirer, you're thinking. Well, somebody's doing schtick. What's a growing crusher? But no read on. Now, you tell me as they tell you the story where the bid is my missing something Philadelphia, Inquirer surreal newspaper. Okay. So Pete is a five foot two inch two hundred nineteen pound dude who got him to the medical business kind of by accident. And he has done over ten thousand grind crushing your logical. Question would be what to grind crushing after any sort of cardiac surgery. There has to be someone who is in blood clotting. So there's not internal bleeding Pete leans on me ephemeral artery to 'cause they're to be appropriate blood clotting. So you don't have internal bleeding ephemeral arteries most important point is Richard groin. So therefore a groin crusher. He's five to as I said, sometimes he needs to step stool to stand above patients. The applies pressure for twenty to forty minutes. Hm? My training tubbies situational awareness and attention to detail if I'm not attentive to detail somebody's gonna die after training in the navy began moonlighting as a critical care tech volunteered with his local ambulance company. Eventually got a job at the hospital. He worked in critical care tech for three years before the current position opened up. He said this job fits me like a glove. That's nice. It's like the missing piece of the puzzle for me his wife of twenty nine years as a nurse at Pennsylvania hospital the couple of two adult daughters. It takes too much energy to be miserable. I'm a happy guy. I'm a party guy. I love eating drinking partying and when I'm not working. Of course. I love grind crushing. Sounds like something you'd name your monster trucks, like a bit t shirts. Now. It sounds like we make a note of this. We got a call doc most or we'll talk to him on Monday Monday Monday. I wanna know a doc knows about it. Ryan, Chris, you should you should act as with all confidence that that's that's the thing. And and see how he responds as opposed to joking through it should be like growing crushing that seems to be on the rise. What can you tell? I'm see how he responds. By the way, he has nicknames at the hospital, according to the story PD pressure the grind guy crusher man and painted me. Those are nicknamed nice. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer. UT's that story earlier. And I just assumed because we were talking to Pete in studio are Pete that Pete head crushed your grind. Somehow. There was some anecdotal story. Yeah. I thought maybe because both ran into the glass door with our heads or something. Like you were in the producer booth. Talking about showering at work, and he rolled his chair back in Newark. It's not bad gave him the nickname grind crusher pizza. Greg crushes wife, sandy. Said that she nominated him for this Philadelphia Inquirer series. Philadelphia. Local people with interesting stories city, wept tears of joy several times. She said, I know he doesn't remember all the people he's touched including reader name, sandy Charinsky. He doesn't remember me or my husband because he's because he's had his hands on so many grinds. Sure that's reasonable so pizza grind crusher worth the wait. Clearly right now. So does every hospital have one of those what we're going to find out, and what's the real professional formal title. Right. Like, what does it say under their name tag? You don't think there's a card that says Pete? Nope. It says drunk grind crusher would be g see like. Yeah. Right. P g c g c c c comma MD you can get your or you can get. Well, doctor in grand crushing. So a D C T. How that goes? I'm going to give you a few more places that have closed, and then we have several textures chimed in on showering at work.
