"A long and sometimes bitter campaign, Lori Lightfoot faces a field of 8 challengers. She is using the final days before the election to make her closing arguments this weekend, we are listening. Hello, I'm political editor, Craig Della Moore, and this is at issue. All during the race for mayor, we've tried to bring you conversations with all of the candidates on the ballot. We've offered each of them half an hour to talk about the campaign and their plans and policies, all of them accepted, though mayor lightfoot was only able to grant us 15 minutes. Well, you've heard from all 8 of the mayor's challenges over the past few months, mayor lightfoot's interview is the last one to air, as the incumbent the one who's had to defend her record is probably fitting that she have the last word, and you get to hear the one on one interview with her during this half hour. But I also think we have the opportunity to revisit some of the mayor's other recent appearances and conversations, because when you're deciding who should have your vote, you should be able to rely on more than 20 or 32nd sound bites. So this weekend, we're going to let you hear the mayor discuss some of her policies and accomplishments in the form in which we heard them expressed in detail. The other candidates have had their shots now. It's the mayor's turn. We'll start with a controversy that picked up a political spin. The city of Chicago as of this year extended its parental leave policy so that all 32,000 municipal employees get 12 weeks of parental leave up from 6 last year. But the Chicago public school system did not extend the offer to its employees. The Chicago teachers union blamed meddling by the mayor's office, but she denied it. Every single sister agency has multiple collective bargaining agreements. We work with organized labor. We don't impose by Fiat. And nor could the board of education do that. There's got to be a discussion in some agreement on the part of the parties and then perhaps that matter gets presented to the board of education for ratification. But we're nowhere near that yet. The discussion has to be had in the first instance at the collective bargaining table, and that process has not started yet. So I'm urging both sides and you saw hopefully my response to Stacey Davis Gates, I don't sit in and dictate local policy at the sister agencies. If there's a question that comes up and they want my opinion or want us to weigh in it, of course we do. But fundamentally, just as we did at the city, they've got to sit at the collective bargaining table and work it out. That's the way the process works. And when that happens, and there's an agreement, presumably it will be ratified by the board of education. At the appropriate time. But they're not there yet. The CTU, by the way, is backing mayoral contender Brandon Johnson, who's an official with the union. Another topic that's come up a lot during the campaign is the Chicago transit authority and safety on the trains and buses mayor lightfoot says the CTA is getting safer, but she is the first to acknowledge that things need to become a lot better. Look, the city has to be safe. Period full stop. The CTA's vitally important to the lifeblood of our city were here today talking about economic development and regional cooperation. Public transportation is a big, big component of that. And chairman, the chairman of the CTA, as well as president Carter, understand that. Yes, we've made progress. We've made progress because the Chicago police department under my direction and leadership in a superintendent's leadership has committed more sworn officers to support the CTA security efforts. We've made progress because the CTA itself has committed more security personnel, more canine teams, and what we've also made progress because we are listening to the customers and we are listening to our union partners about what needs to be done to make the CTA vibrant and safe and reliable. One of the biggest challenges that the CTA has right now is staffing shortages. Truthfully, it's a nationwide problem and we are doing everything that we can from the city from our city colleges and the unions and collaboration with the CTA to fill those staffing voids. That will solve and address a lot of the challenges that we're seeing, but more work has to be done. Yes, progress has been made, but we've got to keep working and keep our foot on the gas to make sure that we are delivering the safest, most reliable public transportation system in the country, bar none. But as she acknowledged that destination is some distance away. This year, though the city concluded another journey that's been years in the making at a ceremony at the Chicago history museum, mayor lightfoot and Cook County board president Tony preckwinkle introduced the greater Chicagoland economic partnership. It's an alliance among Chicago and cook to page will came Lake and mchenry counties, officials across the region have agreed to work together to bring businesses to the area rather than compete with each other, after the formalities I sat down with the mayor to discuss why the public should care. Well, first of all, it's never been done before. This is concrete, regional effort to market as a region to do pitches as a reason to think about what our opportunities are, what our assets are and to put those forward as Chicagoland and not simply Chicago. It's never been done before. So it's a big deal. You saw the level of enthusiasm of our county partners do page Kane will, they are all, and of course, cook all extraordinarily excited because we've created this opportunity where there is trust. And that the cornerstone of this partnership is trust and making sure that we hold ourselves accountable, but we go together as a region and recognizing that as our region rises, we all rise. And that trust is obviously key. This is, of course, the region in which McDonald's was lured from dupage to Chicago, how do you keep that kind of thing from hatch? Well, I think we have agreements that we're not going to go and try to poach each other's businesses. But if there's an opportunity and someone wants to move new page county board chair, Deb Conroy said, we look at how it can be a win for everybody. That's the difference. No better time to do this then Right now we must fight. We must stop. We can even reverse the damage that's been done to our climate. As of today, Illinois is a force for good for an environmental future. We can be proud of. Of course, we all are concerned with our earth and we wanted to be there and You know, remain sustainable for us and our kids and everything else. But Take me into this bill until the WLS listeners exactly how absurd it is that we won't be able to use coal energy except for a few handpicked things. And how it's going to get sold to other states. Well, that's that's exactly right. I mean, this one. Just elation. First of all was massage for month after month by the special interests, and it basically died over summer because The Democrats couldn't keep their unions, um, satisfied and also their environmental satisfied and also excellent. Who pays the bills for them to when it comes to investing in Democrat campaign. So, um, you know, they just basically let it kind of ride out the summer and then push came to shove an excellent said Hey, listen, we're going to collect cut down to We're going to cut out to Nicola plants if you don't do something, and so they cobbled together a bill that literally just a couple hours prior to it. Passing was still having changes made to it. That's terrible legislation for Illinois because first and foremost, the environmentalists got what they wanted. They got to say that over 35% of Illinois energy that comes from coal and gas. Must shut down at a date definite starting in 2030, and so we're just going to get rid of 35% of our energy capacity. Um, guess what, folks, That's actually not going to happen. What you're going to do is you may shut down Illinois call and natural gas. But we're just going to purchase that across state lines because there's no way that renewable energy, wind and solar Can actually provide that type of energy power in that shorter timeframe. There's no way that that's going to happen. And in fact, in California, they just put in five new natural gas plant to supply energy to the grid and what's been and and then the wrong way and what's been happening and in California rolling blackouts. Um, yeah, exactly where. Okay. Now we're talking about, uh, no carbon carbon free energy by 2045, which is a steep hill to climb. Um And then, right within this bill, correct me if I'm wrong. $4000 4000 dollars credit an electric vehicle credit to Illinois ins. And up to an 80% rebate stipend. If you will for the charging station. I don't know if anybody's priced electric cars but I'm here to tell you that I can't afford 1 $4000 is going to help me be able to afford one. Where is this money coming from? Well, it's coming from the taxpayers in the ratepayers in two different two different mechanisms. First of all, they are. They're offering $4000 tax credits on your income taxes. If you purchase an electrical vehicle, but only if you live in cook and the collar counties and a couple other Areas of the state the rest of state. Forget it. So if you live in downers Grove, you get the $4000 tax credit. If you live in Decatur or DeKalb, Forget it. You're not eligible. I mean, it's just the most outrageous thing ever in a bill that you would you know, discriminate that way. Chicago and Island surrounded by reality. I mean, really, it really is. I want to talk here. Wait a minute. It even gets worse. Actually, on this case they want to actually front load those credits for folks who are low income so that they can purchase an electrical vehicle. But we don't know hardly any low income people are even middle income people that can afford $40,000 and upwards electrical vehicles. So it's just Nonsense upon nonsense. This is ridiculous. It's virtue, signaling for virtue, signaling that is really that's what we're into. We're all about making people feel good and and and and it's amazing to me that we We forget that these carbon fiber blades on these windmills are you can't recycle them. They could put into a mountainside somewhere. We forget that this clean burning energy. These batteries that are Half the size of a pickup truck. Uh, you can't recycle those Those go into a mountainside somewhere in Idaho. I'm sure the people in Idaho love that. Well, you know, and that's the case. But in this this energy legislation actually requires us to more than double our commitment to wind and solar power, even as it makes up 7 to 10% of our energy capacity right now, and I don't even believe that number. Honestly, I think that's a number where we're importing some of that credit. From other states, So it's nothing but they want to spend upwards of $600 million per year on wind and solar generation, and it weren't it's never going to be able to replace the call and the the natural gas, So I mean, it doesn't make sense at all to do this and to cover are really fertile farmland. With US store farms that, uh, you know when it could be used to reduce food for the rest of the nation, and in fact, the world former state representative, former West Point grad Jeannie Ives's with the genie. I know that you're very involved on the local level when it comes to school board meetings to the education of our Children in in the suburbs, and everybody talks about school choice and we know what the Chicago public school systems like. People want to move out to the suburbs because we have better schools and better education. That's not always the case. Talk about not only the cost per child and some of these district but how Suburban schools are failing us, but they don't want us to know. Well, that unfortunately, that is the case and across the state when I think it's important for people to realize that across the state, um you know only about one third of the Children read and do math at grade level across the entire state of Illinois. Now, you know you're seeing yourself Well, yeah, but you know what? I live in Wheaton. It's got to be a good school system. Well, one or two kids. Only one or two kids. Are read and do math at grade level. I mean, the actual numbers for that are 53% English prefer English Professions C and 52% math proficiency, so roughly one out of two and these are schools and school districts that bend over the pat themselves on the back about how great they are. You're not kind of smile on your face, but you really don't know what's going on. And I know that you're always talking about if you know when your school board's meeting is you have to go. You have to find out what terms are coming up. Who's in there? Find out because it starts on a very local level. Um If you want to affect change, and you want to see things change in your school district really quick. Can you just kind of tell me and explain to me what the state Bill 818 is? And the very graphic details for kids as far as kindergarten to fourth grade. In sex education. What to me is just absolutely insane. Sure the state Legislature passed and Governor Pritzker signed SB 18, which is comprehensive sex Ed. It begins really in kindergarten. They call it health and safety, but it's really not just that It's all about teaching them gender and the gender fluidity and all the different types of genders and they start to introduce that in kindergarten and it goes on up through there. I mean, they according to the national sex education standards, which This confidence of sex that Bill requires you use national sex education standards, which, by the way, are not national standards in the form of like something that the CDC or the FDA came up with, like a governmental entity. No, these are far left groups with agendas that called these standards the national sex education stands. It's burning for him. And, of course, Illinois adopted these and these standards, you should be your people..

They aren't living in July of 2021. They're living in January of 2021. They're living in mask land and when they go back to school Their school may tell them that since not enough of them are vaccinated. They have to wear the masks. Um This is from the Tribune. Their editorial 341,000 students in the Chicago public School system, only 50,012 and older have been vaccinated. So far, the teachers union has called for 80%. Of age eligible students to be vaccinated by October, so the union wants the kids to be 80% vaccinated. Well, good luck to all of us on that. So what do you want your kid to do when they go back to school this this fall. Do you want to wearing a mask? You want all their colleagues wearing a mask? If or if not, your kid has been vaccinated. Mayor Lightfoot On hand for that introduction a little bit earlier. Of course, we mentioned earlier that today is Flag Day. Um, So what can you do? What can't you do? I think really a lot of us Don't even have a clue. Uh, Frankly, I learned a lot reading a couple of articles earlier. Jeff Hendricks is the deputy director of the American Legions. Americanism division and he joins us now, Jeff, How are you? It was sir and yourself. Absolutely fine. Tell me what is the Americanism Division? Uh, So it is a section of the national headquarters the American Legion. We predominantly look at all things that are patriotic and instilling that in our news today, and are we getting better at that or worse? I think we're doing pretty well. We've got our boys nation program that looks to foster. Uh, some of the programs throughout the US the American baseball. We also have other programs where we work with the Boy Scouts of America, flag protection and things of that nature as well. We'll talk to me about flag protection because you know the flag code. What was passed in 1923. I think 1943 perhaps, um And it's not really an enforceable. Document. Is it or is basically a suggestion, or can you be punished for mistreating the flag? Um, So the yes, there's So, the flag code title for the U. S code. Um, does not have any enforceable, um, parts to that, and that came from, uh, You know, from the US versus Iceland, us versus Johnson. Um, and so there are no more, uh, Enforcement. Acting to that, however, as a, uh You know the ability to have a code? Uh, traditional, um, means by which to respect the flag. The flag coat still stand to do that. So it's a good guideline to follow. That makes any sense. I mean, I remember back was it in the eighties when there was talk of a flag burning? Amendment. It actually was. It was an instructive debate because we argued amongst ourselves what the meaning of the flag was. Should it stand for that? What does it stand forward? Does it stand for the right for people to actually burn it? I thought that was a political exercise in Congress that actually served us all pretty well. I did not know that you're not supposed to use the US flag and advertising. Correct. Correct. That is that's also in the flag club. Um, and so that's one of the things that you're not supposed to do. Um, but we can recognition are working with, um those in Congress to develop a, uh the possibility of having something to be able to to protect the flag. Whether that be through, uh, some sort of amendment or something along those lines until that kind of gets after what you were talking about just a moment ago. So you're looking to revive a flag burning amendment or protection. Uh, protection? Yes. Well, what would it protect her? How would it work? Um Well, that's you know, that would Be one of the things that we would be looking to do in order to, uh See what we need to do, Uh, The offset since you know the flag burning is protected by considered to be protected speech by the U. S. Supreme Court 1989. And so what we're looking for would be another constitutional amendment that would look at Um, you know, placing moratorium on any desecration of the flag of the United States, Um, and following that, those those lines and figuring out how that would actually look, of course. If you change about 12 different ways between now and sure, But you know, here's my thing, Jeff. It seems to me like when you do that you When you raise the issue, it's going to lead to more flag burning. You know what I'm saying? Um, Maybe. Possibly, um, but you know it. What it does do is put in the forefront. Um, a discussion to be had by individuals to stay, You know, is this something that we want to have is something that we want to protect? It is something that we want. To become the symbol of the united that is a symbol of united States and to hold it, Uh, hold it, dear, Right and so and getting that back out in front of everybody. A straight line. And then with a bit of every winds in place again, little a little, and then you keep saying it over and over again. You what am I looking at? And then they cut to a scene of two sets of Clydesdales in a field. And Zebra with his head in the little replay booth, and and then you cut to a couple of cowboys and the one cowboy says to the other. This referee's of jackass on the other Cowboys is no. He's a zebra and works every time and it is now playing on the big screen for it. I just showed you the wiener dog Wiener dogs racing and people dressed up this ketchup investor. There's the winner trucks. The weird times. Running through a field dressed is with little buns around them. I mean, right? Yeah. Who doesn't want more of that? It's so hard to get a clear read on the teacher's not going back to school because You knew 1000 years ago that the teachers and the school district would clash that they would not come to terms all that earthy, CPS said. We do not want you going back. It's not safe. The teachers today would be arguing that they must go back. It's the only way to teach those two always disagree. It always starts with CPS, saying Here's a policy and then see to you because they're powerful union because they've negotiated with these people and had to fight. They immediately put on their armor and they start fighting. That's just that that happens every single day. If the Chicago public School System said, We believe that tomorrow the Senate's going to rise in the East The teachers would say Now, you just wait one minute. And then the fun begins. So it's hard to get a clear read on this. My current thinking is that you gotta go back. And if you can't go back or don't want to go back to and don't, But then you're not going to be a school teacher in the Chicago public school system that sounds terribly jaded, and that's my shorthand for it. It's a longer conversation, but that's where we are today. I'm going to ask Dr Kevin most, he's not the decider. I just wonder what he thinks about the safety of teachers going into classrooms, kids going into classrooms and then going home to their respective places and may be spreading it. "Continues at the 14th day of January, and Chicago teachers punished for refusing to show for the start of in person classes over covert 19 concerns. Demonstrated Wednesday outside of the school board president's home. Roughly 150 employees were docked pay and locked out of Chicago public school systems earlier this week, meaning they can't teach remotely either has classes begin this week for thousands of Pre K and special education students. District officials said late Wednesday that the number had dropped to 100 as staff members either returned to work or presented a valid excuse, such as quarantine. Meanwhile, a report released Wednesday by the CDC as to the evidence, suggesting that Children aren't the main drivers of community transmission. But that's not the problem. Critics say States put a priority on keeping restaurants, bars and Jim's Open over education. Former acting director of the CDC, Dr Richard Besser says. While there's good news on the vaccine front, Americans are still exhibiting bad behavior, and the government is not providing enough support. When, when the pandemic first hit last year, we talked about how bad it could get this winter and there many reasons for that viruses like the winner. They survive longer. They stay in the air longer, but we're also facing incredible pandemic fatigue. And the news is so focused on vaccination and vaccination is critically important. It is gonna lead to the end of this pandemic. But it's not what's going to make the big difference this winter this winter. What will truly make the difference is if we can come together as a nation and ensure that we're practicing those things that will reduce transmission, so wearing masks keeping apart Washing her hands. Hopefully, when Congress comes back at the end of the month, they're gonna put in place those measures that need to be there so that people can protect themselves. You know, this last round of money that came to people is was really one month, one month of support. We need to make sure that their dollars coming in to support people that addiction protection is extended that rents support. Expands way beyond what was done so far that they continue to expand unemployment coverage and benefits. Those of the things that will allow people if they're exposed to stay home and stay away from other people will allow people who are infected to stay home and still be able to put food on the table and pay the rent. But if we don't do those things, you know it will be a long time before this thing turns around, and we will truly need to wait for vaccination. If we do these measures, vaccination and these measures together, we will see a much more rapid decline in this pandemic.
