"It's a phrase. We hear every time. Politicians are debating or defending a proposal quote. The research shows or the date is clear. We rely on academics and researchers to provide our leaders with information to tackle the issues in our world and we trust that information is as accurate as possible but has been a growing concern that threatens the credibility of scientific research. Liz calls it. The scale problem is an example for the last ten years. I've been doing in early childhood center in chicago heights. So we can explore what's called the education production function we use chicago. Heights is our lab so we're learning a lot about what works in chicago heights but the question of course of the greatest import is after we find a result in chicago heights if we scale that up to say all of chicago or all avella or all of the midwest are all of the us excetera. Should we expect to find the same impact firm our program that we reported in chicago heights. We've never really gone after that question. But that's the most important question. That policymakers should have they call it. The voltage effect. In what that means is if i find this really big in a small scale experiment if i go to a larger scale the fact ends up being one tenth or one fifth of what it was in the original experiment into that i say houston. We have problems. What do you do about that so where we started as any good economist would is race. Cheer office and write down a model. So this is work with dana suskind. Who's was a previous Guest on your show in happens to be my wife and one of my graduate. Students named omar who badly in the model is essentially a model of scientific knowledge creation. And we break down this credibility crisis. Or let's say the scale up be fact into three bins. The first been is what we call a false positive. I ran an experiment. And i just got lucky in terms of i found a big fact but it was unlucky in the sense that it wasn't the truth. What we need to do is we need to make sure that we replicate that original experiment. Roughly three or four times. So that's different researchers replicating your original work and if you find the same result continuously you can be very confident that it's a true result in that should be scaled. Infants number two kind of been number two is well. There could be incentives that the original researcher had that win here. She did the original experiment they might have done something that gave them an overly mystic result. Let me give you an example of that so at chicago heights. We hired roughly twenty to forty teachers in our program. What researchers typically too is. They put out an advertisement for teachers and they take the twenty best teachers. It only makes sense legal. Yeah i'm starting a program. I wanna give my program. It's best shot of being good. So i'm going to hire the twenty teachers. Okay but now win. That result gets scaled up or when that program gets scaled up. You might have to hire twenty thousand teachers and guess what those first twenty are. Probably your best teachers in the next. Several thousand are not as good as the first twenty. That's a reason for the scallop problem. When you did the original experiment your incentives were trying to get the biggest treatment fact but at scale. You can't choose just twenty now is researchers. What can we do. You know what we can do is get a large pool teachers and then randomly choose which ones are going to be in my original scientific experiment because if you randomly choose which one which ones come in is teachers. That looks a lot like what the population's going to be. If we scale it up so those are the types of elements that is an original researcher. You need to think. How do i want my results to be used in. If i want them to be scaled up. I need to make those kinds of choices in the original research to make sure that my results will scale economics to me is commonsense so i think economics that way can be viewed as a great window into the world in a great way to understand how people will respond to incentive for example. When i first started to do field experiments my main goal was to go to the real world generate data. That can test economic theory that can be potentially used. By policymakers. big brains is production of the you chicago podcast network. You like what you heard. Please give us a review and a rating. "With consultation with Marty 888519 90 96. It's how you scheduled that 888519 90 96. Marty will answer the questions that you have. You'll have some for you too. That's how it gets to know you and your unique situation so he can let you know you're readyto launch retirement right now. What are the best strategies for use again? Custom bill that plan. Well, we closed the show out with questions we've gotten in from listeners, Marty, So Q and a starts today show from Mars in two years, My wife and I will be 66 will be qualified to receive full Social Security benefits. We have IRA accounts with combined value of over a million dollars. How can my wife and I reduce income tax when we start to withdraw from those IRA accounts during retirement years? Well, let's talk about doing a Roth conversion. Within the next two years and reduce the size of the million dollar IRA package so we can have a some tax free income with the taxable income. So, yes, you're probably going to have be paying a lot of taxes in retirement, which is welcome to the club. It Z, you know, not unforced scene, but that's a good problem to have. I'd rather have you paying tax on too much money than have it the other way around and not have enough money. So But, you know, Roth conversion might be the one of the very effective ways and efficient ways of taking some of that million dollars that you have in converting it. Yes. You have to pay the taxes in advance. So if you convert $100,000 and you're in the 25% bracket, you're going to pay. You know $25,000 of that 100,000 to the to the government for taxes to do that conversion. But it'll pay off in the long run, because then you'll have tax free income and you've reduced the size of your your IRA accounts. So that's that it would be the important part. That's Cause you're gonna have social security. You know, we you know we haven't really sat down and had a conversation. So I don't know what other income you might have. If you have rental income or dividend income. If you have capital gains on sale of stocks and what not if you have if you have an inheritance coming So there's you know a lot of questions. I would have your 66 years old and and, uh, you know, it's yours in a couple of years, you'll be 66 years old. So you're going to start taking yourself security. Maybe you can delay taking your Social security. On this way, reduce well, it'll keep your income at a lower level while you start taking money from your retirement account, So there's a there's all different kinds of strategies. Let's get together and have a meeting. One of my offices and we'll discuss which way would be best to go for. You know, Marty, Kentucky about you know the right Roth strategies and all the right strategy is based on Well, what you have indicated in your question, but then any more information that you can share with Marty 888519 90 96 to do that Next question from Chicago Heights when you would throw monies from before one K plan, pay the taxes and reinvest the balance into a Roth 401. K is there are waiting period of five years before the profit is tax free. And also if you do this yearly must each conversion amount be held for five years or once that Roth 41. K is open. Is it only that 15 year period? Yes, it's only that 15 year period. But there is that five year waiting period if you don't have a previously opened Roth, and that's just to the government mandate is you have to wait the five years once you open it, but you can add to it and that you're not starting the clock over again. So that's the good news is the more you know so and that's why I recommend doing it. Not all at once to a little bit every year. So you don't put you know, Put yourself and push yourself into a higher tax brackets. So do a little bit on the conversion each year and then just added to the Roth and that'll help reduce the size of the retirement account that the traditional retirement account. And increase the size of that tax free Roth income that you'll have in the future. Yeah, just to go back to that first question, Morty, and they had a million in IRA accounts. And you wisely suggested some of that for Roth. But then that would be obviously incrementally on whatever portion of that million, right? Well, plus also at the same token, you know, just because you're eligible in 66, you're qualified to receive a full soul security benefit. Doesn't mean you have to take it in 60 70 game or you could wait till 70. Not only will you get more, but you'll be deferring the grow the tax implications because that was your biggest concern was the tax implications. So you're deferring the tax implication till later and at the meat. In the meantime, while you're deferring the taking of your social security, you could be converting some of your traditional million dollars into Roth. So there's there's the different kind of strategies that were gonna put together for you. You know they're kind of out of the box, but they're all going to help you in the long run. That's the whole idea. Next question is from Bartlett. I am 65. I have $1.5 million from divorce proceedings. What should I use to guide the allocation of my assets in my portfolio? Well, you're 65. It doesn't say if you're still working, or if you're retired, I would say you know how much of that million five are you willing to lose? It depends on where you invest it if you're going to go high risk, or if you're going to put it into a safe money strategy for income for later. Or if you're going to buy a house or or pay off your house or move to a warmer climate, So there's AH have a lot of questions regarding that aspires.
