Why Chiefs will win Super Bowl: experience and talent
"Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes goes into the Super Bowl as the NFL's MVP. But he knows that she's often can operate as efficiently as the blocking by his offensive line. Everybody knows that everything starts up front. And so it would be a great challenge for offensive line to try to do what they can in the run game and the pass game of protecting and run blocking. Mahomes is wary of the eagles sack totals with 70 during the regular season since sacks became an official statistic in 1982, only the Chicago Bears in 1984 and the 1989 Minnesota Vikings have had more. The Charlie Kirk Show
Charlie and Stephen Moore Discuss the Downfall of Chicago
"Joining me now is one of my favorite guests and a fellow chicagoan as we share our lament of the downfall of a once great American city. That's not why he's here today to talk about, but we always kind of start with the Chicago update. It is Steve Moore. Steve, welcome back to the program. Steve, every time you come back on the show, another amazing business has left Chicago. Now it's Tyson Foods. Steve, tell us the latest Chicago. I think you still live there. You travel through there, has Chicago finally hit rock bottom. Hey Charlie, great to be with you. It is just heartbreaking to me as somebody who grew up in Chicagoland. And still believes that Chicago is one of the great cities in the world, although I don't think it certainly was when I was growing up. I'm not so sure you could say that today, given the control, the inflation is, I mean, the taxes are so high in Chicago now, the schools are horrific. Corrupt leadership and a lot of the business leaders who I've talked to who have moved out of Chicago, Charlie, they're telling me they could even, they could put up with all of that, but what they can't put up with is that the danger that they face and their employees face having a business located in Chicago with the shootings with the muggings with the crime that is so rampant. And so you're right, this is about the 5th. I mean, look, Sears is out of Chicago now. Citadel is out of Chicago now. Boeing moved out of Chicago. Tyson's food. And by the way, Tyson's food moved out. I mean, my goodness, how bad can it be in Chicago? When you're moving out of Chicago moving to Arkansas, I'm just sort of saying that tongue in cheek, but it is so sad to see, even the Chicago Bears are moving out of Chicago. You see that? Yeah, that's right they're moving to Arlington hikes. The Chicago Bears can't even stay at soldier field.

"I think we get to at least 7 at this point. That's why I think we're heading. And based upon some of the defensive issues with a bad bears defense, now decimated the Vikings are going to be able to score some points here. And I think the other interesting element here is and we'll have to monitor this. But we know Matt nagy's been the guy calling place. That's the reason the offense is look. I'm sorry, not Matt naggy. Bill laser has been the one calling place. And that is why the offense is looked substantially better. Now there's no real talent on offense, and that's why you can only go to the trick bag so many times like he did against the packers, but eventually the defense start preparing for the tricks and you just can't win mono Amano in the third and fourth quarter. But we'll have to keep an eye on the laser because it will be a little bit of a downgrade if he doesn't call plays. I think they'll go to default in that situation. But there should be some opportunities for the bears offense as well. That's again why this is trending up a little bit. Justin Fields out talent, and he's flashed a couple times, he's mobile. He hasn't put a full game together yet. And Mike Zimmer is certainly given rookie quarterbacks some trouble over his years. He's going to throw out a couple exotic blitzes up the middle that could present some trouble for a bear's offensive line that has issues protecting when laser doesn't stack the deck with multiple tight ends and backs to help him protection. But you kind of go into this game thinking like Justin Fields is going to have a complimentary ground game here. Montgomery's shown pretty well against the Vikings, Minnesota, if you look 26th in defense of Russia efficiency on the season, 31st in defense of Russia efficiency on first down. Now they do get their starting defensive tackles back. And that should help their run defense, but it's not a great run defense by any stretch. Then you also have the Vikings number one corner prashad breland kicked off the team after an argument with the coaching staff, which turned physical Saturday afternoon. So the Vikings are also down their top cover corner. This game is a disaster. There's no doubt about that. But the over 43 and a half that came in late last night was very sharp. Now, as you alluded to Todd, one book got to 46 did see some buyback there, but now we're looking at the sharper shop in the world right now on game day still dealing 46. So I do think the over was a real position. But again, it was at 43 and a half, 44 is very key, 45 obviously has some relevance as well. So that was the true position taken in this game on the over. A little bit different of a situation now at 46, but it wouldn't shock me if there's some point scored tonight relative to the total. Yeah, one thing for the Vikings, their road to the playoffs got a little bit more difficult with the saints outright upset against the Tampa Bay buck. So not a whole lot of wigger room for Minnesota. They come into this game 6 and 7. They do have the tie break as things stand right now with an eagles team who should most likely win their game against the Washington football team. And of course, Minnesota's schedule does them no favors. They'll bookend their final four games against the Chicago Bears, but sandwiched in the middle will be a home game next week against the Los Angeles Rams, the team trending up before they'll head to Lambeau Field and you'd hope that maybe the packers take their foot off the gas, a little fighting for the number one seat at this point. I'm not quite sure that's in the cards either, despite having sealed up the NFC north with a few weeks left to go. All right, my friend. I know we have a number of games left to go, Tuesday, football, a rare treat, you wish it wasn't under the circumstances, of course, and we'll see how games being moved this week will impact the team's playing next week, especially with travel and the like. A safe to assume that we will keep our normal recording schedule and come back with NFL week 16 usual time usual place on Thursday. Yeah. Same bat channel, same same bat time. That's what we're doing. So because of how the holidays fell this year on the weekend. The travel schedule really doesn't get impacted. So NFL week 16 on Thursday, we're thinking maybe next Monday off, we'll do the college football playoff preview on Tuesday the 28th. And then NFL, what would it be week 17 on the 30th? That's kind of how we're kind of envisioning the remaining schedule of the year 2021. Yeah, we'll play this out. "About how they've trended in recent times. It's not good, right? Obviously, some injuries along the defensive line. They haven't been able to stop the run. It's just a defense that is trending as one of the league's very worst, whether you're looking at efficiency or EPA. Now all of a sudden you're dealing with the cluster injuries in the secondary. And you're kind of left scratching your head like how are they going to stop Minnesota tonight? Now, obviously, cousins has played horrifically in prime time. That's well documented. That's good. Just horrific. And even though you had Minnesota beat the Steelers last time out in prime time, cousins played one of his worst games of the season. And you look at that game and he was pressured on 12 dropbacks. Had a zero passer rating when pressured against the Steelers. Only two balls, cousins completed when he was pressured against the Steelers. Were to defenders. Two picks, zero compilations when he was pressured. Cousins is also one in 9 on Monday night. So we're going to hear all of that narrative based stuff for this when people are breaking it down. It's worth mentioning. But there's no excuses tonight. He's going to get his left tackle back in Christian derisk looks like. The bears get pressure at the fourth lowest rate in the league, despite blitzing at a league average rate. And then you hit this perfectly. We thought at least some guys would play in the barrier secondary and then like 4 o'clock yesterday when we're all watching games. It slips out that jaylen Johnson the bears top cover corner, and they're starting safety Gibson, also hit the big C list. So the only defensive backs on the bears active roster right now. Our guy named marquay Christian, Dion bush, T's tabor, believe he's a Florida gator. He is a Kindle. Yeah. And then you got Kindle vildor. Those are the only guys that are active at the time of this recording. Obviously those are sounds better as sounds better as a marvel villain than he does is they starting defense it back in the National Football League. That's actually pretty good. In time for venom and Spider-Man that are in theaters right now. Which apparently did a massive number, sub $600 million worldwide, not in my Wheelhouse, but simply incredible in this day and age to do that much on an opening weekend. Yeah. That is that's bananas. So gravitating back towards the game here. It's like prior to the entire secondary being out for the bears. They were already dead last in the NFL and points per pass attempt allowed. It's only going to get worse. Sean Desai had actually been using jaylen Johnson as a shadow corner. So if cousins doesn't like throw up on himself, then I just in Jefferson's probably going to have a pretty big game. There's also some whispers that Adam Thielen is going to test out his ankle pregame. I'm not going to speculate. I think if you were making a line on the play, you'd probably still make it an underdog that he goes. But he's gonna test it pregame. And then the other interesting element of this defense, the guy that's kind of been the glue and held it all together is roquan Smith in the middle. He's really been like this stabilizing force. He re aggravated his hamstring injury against Green Bay's been limited all week. And he has been the guy that's limited Dalvin cook as a pass catcher. And if you look at delvin cook in the 5 games, that he's played against the bears where roquan Smith was there. He's averaging about 19 and a half receiving yards. So roquan Smith if he's not a 100% or tries to give it a go and exits after a possession or two because the hamstring won't hold up or if he doesn't go at all. That's a big miss as well. I don't know if you want to touch on the other side of the ball quickly. This is really amazing to just talking about some of the guys that are missing and then ultimately the price and where we think it's going to head. Yeah, I mean, may as well. I honestly think instead of some of the X's and I was talking about the price, you could probably make a little more sense, given we've seen money come in, obviously, on the Vikings, is anticipated when news broke late last week about the bears dealing with issues, and of course the total it open 44. Got his highest 46 before there was a little bit of resistance earlier today at a couple shops. Yeah. I mean, here's what's interesting is we know the bears put a ton of effort into Sunday Night football against Green Bay. You could tell there was buy in. Aaron Rodgers had embarrassed them earlier in the season. But if you've been doing some reading, this past Thursday, Jalen Johnson, who we've talked about and is out for this game. Did a podcast. And he said right now, our locker room has two factions. It's players who are still fighting hard, and then there's players who are in tank mode. And my guess is, well, you don't want to speculate. The guys that are in tank mode probably. Here's my guess that we're going to see. You're going to see a lot of teams that are potentially out of the playoffs. I think probably get impacted more by the bug and the virus than teams that are like fully head on with a mission statement for a Super Bowl. We kind of saw this coming into the season where the Buccaneers were like, even though they've lessened protocols, we're going to follow the same protocols as last year. We saw the cults, if you're watching hard knocks, they're the team that's in season. If you watch their meetings, all these guys have individual tables. They're all still 6 feet apart. They're all still wearing masks. This isn't to get into the COVID stuff. But I think you'll see teams that are out of it guys are going to be a little bit more Willy nilly. Anyways, the point is, Jalen Johnson said, how dare you take veiled shots at a guy like Alan Robinson like that? Alan Robinson wants out of Chicago. So badly. And he would have continued not playing. Had it not been for Justin Fields who he really likes and gets along with. That him playing last week was like, hey, Justin Fields are starting. My guess is that if Andy Dalton was the starter last week. Alan Robinson would not have played. It's hard to kind of gauge this, but all of a sudden you gave that full blown effort last week and came up short. Now you're just kind of like riddled with guys missing. And you have one of your top players saying there's factions in the locker room. How motivated are you really? And we made this game right on the opener of like three and a half and my understanding this, even though the line was showed no value, the Vikings were going to be the side regardless of everything that's transpired this week, even if the even if the bears were like fully healthy and didn't get hit with COVID, they were still going to be the side. Now we saw the Jalen Johnson news hit, where he is also out and we saw this trend from like 6 to 6 and a half..

"The matchup yesterday was, hey, we were against one of the worst offensive lines in football. With the Atlanta Falcons. And so matchup wise, when they face a above average O line, suddenly that becomes a concern because you're not able to get after the quarterback at the rates we saw yesterday. And your point is when you do step up in class against quarterbacks that can get the ball out quickly and accurately. It becomes a little bit of a different game now. I thought Matt Ryan all season, I think Matt Ryan's performed better than some of the metrics indicate better than a lot of people think. He has been the most hit quarterback in the NFL. And I think I've told you via text. If I'm Sean Payton, I'm going to knock on the door of Atlanta of the Atlanta Falcons. We know Matt Ryan's a little bit older. We know your organization's going in a little bit of a different direction. I doubt they would trade him within the division, but God forbid the saints had him. They would make a run for the next two or three years, I think. I still think Matt Ryan's got some good football left in him and this year he's proven that despite being just absolutely hit on virtually every drop back. I mean, there are going to be some jobs that are quite interesting for the likes of Matt Ryan and Jimmy Garoppolo, we stay in this game, whether it's Denver, whether it's Pittsburgh, whether it's the saints like you mentioned, that couple of teams out there that have all the pieces that just maybe a quarterback away. So while we've talked about this being one of the wildest off seasons for college football as far as the transfer portal, there may be a couple NFL teams that aren't going out there and getting a guy that is going to be truly elite, but that can significantly upgrade the quarterback position and put them in a spot to make a run. Yeah, if you're the Pittsburgh Steelers, if you're the Denver Broncos, there are certainly pieces that you have as a team that doesn't necessarily indicate you would have to rebuild, just go out and get the most important position settled and you'll be extremely competitive and I do believe Matt Ryan has two to three good years of football left in him. I've been really impressed when you really think about learning a brand new offense. The parts that he has. I mean, your best weapons are rookie tight end. One of the most difficult positions to learn. And they're lining them up out wide. Certainly Russell gage has come on and then a quarter old Patterson has been a pleasant surprise. But in general, one of the worst offensive lines, I think your parts in terms of weapons is still below a league average. And you're learning a brand new system with a head coach that is probably in a little bit over his head. It's always wild to see when you get some of these guys that obviously if you don't get protected, you have big problems in front of you, but that is the nature of the beast in this business and what quarterbacks need some of the surrounding supporting cast to truly realize their potential. In terms of other things that stood out to you in a positive fashion over the weekend, paying all the floors yours, I'm curious to get your take. I think we go to Saturday night. And if it wasn't for this unit, we're probably a little bit lighter in our pockets this morning. But I think you give credit to Matty eber flus, who came up with a really solid game plan, obviously had two weeks to come up with something to prepare for a rookie quarterback in Mac Jones. But what was interesting to me is the defense changed a little bit. It was clear the colts incorporated far more man coverage concepts, something we had said, hey, they play a little soft in their coverage. We don't necessarily love that all the time. It's not an overly aggressive defense. And they change that up far more man coverage, the colts blitzed at a 11% higher rate than their season long average. Everything was just more aggressive defensively. And then through three quarters, Mac Jones had the 6 worst EPA of any quarterback in week 15, obviously, got it going a little bit in the fourth quarter and the colts had an ability to blow a 20 to zero lead heading into that quarter mostly because the offense was doing nothing, Frank Wright got a little conservative, and then when your top weapon and Pittman gets ejected for something that was absolutely ridiculous, there wasn't much punch to the offense at that point and the defense started to wear down a little bit, but ultimately the first three quarters Matt Everett loose confused Mac Jones. And you have to give him credit for coming up with a game plan that I would say that McDaniels and the Patriots didn't really expect. I'll say one thing watching that game, Darius Leonard is probably the best defensive player that doesn't get talked about enough as far as major media is concerned or some of the casual football fans that are out there because he plays in a smaller market. He's been fantastic. There's no doubt about that now. Did give up the touch down to hunter Henry there. Perfect pass from Mac Jones. But he has been a ball hawk. We know his versatility because he can go sideline to sideline and he's been battling an ankle injury. All season had some off season surgery on that ankle and just hasn't quite recovered yet. So getting the two weeks both him and Buckner was certainly beneficial..

"When we broke shop Thursday afternoon we had no idea the NFL schedule was going to be thrown into complete upheaval, but much of the chagrin of our listeners, we are not going to deep dive all of the other games still remaining other than Monday Night Football here on this very show. It's a shit show. And as we speak, Kevin Stefanski. Also, did not test out of the big C so we'll be interesting to see what that means for the browns play calling tonight. Everything that's gone on with the Raiders browns for this evening to my knowledge. The guys that I speak with the information that I see, no one's actually taken true positions on this game. It's all beating the market. You are able, and this is why we always talk about it. If you were sitting in front of a computer and you're getting this information and you have your beat writers set up within your Twitter account, you can get out ahead of this by 30 seconds. At that point, it should take 7 or 8 seconds to bet a game. But what I have seen throughout this course was raiders plus 6 when the news first broke about a week ago that this was a problem. And then when they moved the game, or there was potential for the game to be moved. Brown's plus four and a half came in. And so, ultimately, you have guys playing both sides of this game and I haven't seen a true position based upon the guys that I've spoken with. On this game, yet, but ultimately I think the Raiders are going to close a favorite here, especially with Stefanski who calls the plays. Not getting out of protocol. And the craziest thing about all this, it all depends on which books you've bet it with, too, out here in Nevada, you have House rules that some it has to be the game has to be played on the day scheduled. Others you have 7 to 8 days, so there's some folks that may have a perfectly good middle still going for them. Others who had both sides of their wager refunded. I mean, an absolute cluster fuck in the truest sense of the word when you look at how this is gone, but there's no doubt by the time this podcast goes live, kick off will be about 90 minutes to two hours away. So I'm not sure what's worth. Belaboring the point, as far as the Seahawks correct me from wrong, by the way. Sure. The westgate. They are ones that allow a week. 8 days for the wax gate. 7 days for William hill Caesar's day off for stations. Trust me, dude, I had to do a deep dive on all of it, and the worst part is with some of these mobile apps. You can't even find the damn House rules. So specific to them. We obviously, there was a pretty large position that was meaningful that came in last Monday on the under 43 and a half. But then based upon those House rules, westgate got down to 35 and a half when there were some rumors of the game being rescheduled. But because they are the 8 day policy, they did not last in 35 and a half very long, because guys were taking a free shot at the middle and said 35 and a half sympathetic elastic gets rescheduled a lot of these guys are going to be back up. So not just getting numbers but numbers specific to places based on the rules, which transpiring as well this week. It's simply wild and I know this is a can of worms. We didn't want to open up as it pertains to the industry as a whole, but I was always brought up under the school of thought that you lived and died by the House rules. Whatever was in black and white, that's how things were going to be adhered to. They'd been in place for a while. We obviously didn't have the kind of extenuating circumstances we've gone through over the last two years with major golf and tennis tournaments being rescheduled 6 months later and a variety of things. But I get the feeling now that some of the new age operators that are out there, I tried to get clarity on one book that's in a number of regulated jurisdictions pain. I talked to two journalists in this space that I respect more than anybody else. They couldn't even give me the same answer in terms of what was going on. And it's simply wild that this is where we are now, and it's why we always warn our listeners and whether it's the first time listening to the podcast or they've been with us since day one. Make sure you know the black and white, make sure you protect yourself and all of this. It's hard enough to outrun 11 to ten. It's even harder to outrun it when it's a full blown moving target. That is that spot on. Frustrating times. Let's just put it that way in the space. And not going to say, I didn't see it coming. But I fully envisioned that with more competition, they would allow betters with an edge to partake a little bit more in the space. So I don't love the way things are trending, although there was a nice break out west with some new takeover. I know Caesars is now taking a bet. Yeah, one of my old mentors handling their risk for basically saying come one come all. We're not backing down from bats. And I applaud him to that musician. Yes, been a very, very good out recently for us. And we've had those discussions obviously with John as we do every Thursday. I mean, it's not just the guys that have to bear the brunt of it on the risk floor sometimes it's corporate policy and everything else. And I mean, I know what I dealt with when I.

"You had Patrick Peterson, who was on IR already, and then bershad breland, your other starting quarter goes down in the game and it looked semi severe. I didn't really I should have looked this morning to see how severe it was. But he needed help off the field. Suddenly you're down with three of your best corners. We knew daniil hunter out for the season after the, I believe it was a pack injury in the Dallas game. So now I was unlike you started to think about this or down your top two corners, you're down. You're safety, you're now down to Neil again and suddenly we're having this issue where the Vikings defense is decimated by injury once again for the second year in a row. I thought they played very well. They played tough, Anthony Barr made a massive plan. Man, was that athletic? Where now, unbelievable? Because it's a linebacker, so switch down the defensive end, batted it up as he's getting chopped. He's catching it on the way down. You're getting it in decent field position. I think the 35 or 40 yard line you're saying to yourself, all our offense needs to do is maybe had an explosive pick up 30 yards and maybe we can win this in overtime. But three and out immediately. So it's just a very bizarre offense that's not operating at peak Clint kubiak been gifted this job on his father's name and he's not very good. And so that's partly what we're having here. It'll be interesting to see if this goes completely sideways because I don't think Zimmer's completely out of the woodwork if this were to just spiral downward. He could be very much on the hot seat. And it's wild because a year and a half ago, at least within the gambling community, Zimmer was one of the most respected, and he was covering spreads left right and center. Just hasn't been the case. Although he did get to cash yesterday. That daddy did despite a game day move that actually took it off to 7 and a half at some of the sharper shops out there. And when you look at Zimmer's ATS record, I think it moves to 33 16 and one coming into a game off a straight up loss. We'll see if that manifests itself this weekend. And I know our listeners are sick of us belaboring the point, but they're not may not be a wind total that I've ever bet pain that's gonna be more frustrating win or lose than the Minnesota Vikings knowing how close they've been to winning a lot of these games where it feels all the coin flips have kind of gone against them. So we'll see how things finish out for them. Over the second half of the season. Before we move into lookout lines, wanted to make sure there wasn't anything that we happened to gloss over that you wanted to share as far as observations over the weekend. I decided to subject myself to Texans dolphins. And so that's one that we can address because it was kind of interesting throughout the course of the week the way betters and fantasy guys talked about Tyrod Taylor, you would have thought he was the second coming. Texans were steamed all week from 7 and a half down to soft four. I don't know if there was a three and a half in the market or not but soft for is kind of what I saw. Miami turned it over 5 times. And then Texans still couldn't cover it peak price. That's how bad Tyrod Taylor was. And it wasn't some like tall task. It's a dolphin's defense 26th inefficiency. 26th against the pass. Tyrod was terrible, 6th worst completion percentage compared to expectation. One pass completed beyond ten yards. He wasn't good under pressure. He wasn't good when kept clean. He stunk with play action. 39% success rate for the Texans. Three explosives all game. And so I think this is worth talking about when you have a three and a half point move through the 6 and 7 onto the four, I think we have to throw tire rod in the bad or ugly category. I was surprised that he didn't run the football a little bit more. I know he was returning from a hamstring, but I felt a team so desperate to try and extend plays. And struggling to identify weapons that Tyrod Taylor's legs would have been more of a focal point, knowing that the dolphins defense who plays a lot of man coverage had given up chunky yardage in the past the Josh Allen. So that was one part of the game I was surprised. Didn't play a bigger role for Houston. Maybe the hammy is not quite a 100% yet. Which would explain why you're kicking a field goal down 17 to 6 from the two yard line. Nope, that's just their head. David culley, everyone's friend of analytics, my friend. That's it. Exactly. I just don't get it. You know, I think we talked about this a couple weeks back or like this organization so inept right now in the head coach is. Beyond help. The rebuild there, let's figure out what we have in Davis mills. I understand it hasn't looked good, but there's no talent around him. Why don't we get this guy some reps? Why don't we attempt to have better draft picks? 32 year old Tyrod Taylor, I'm sure he's obviously an upgrade as we know in the market indicated. But what are we getting out of that? Especially if this is the performance. I understand this was his basement level performance, and it's only going to get better from here. It was first came back and since week two, so there's going to be a little rust. But if we're going to lose games anyways, why not get Davis mills more reps? Why not get a better draft position? It doesn't make any sense..

"Of the camera coverage, was I the only one that felt like every goal line situation was bizarre. Every time they got inside, the 5 or ten yard line that I felt that was an alternate universe or an original edition of Madden. I want to make sure that I have some sanity left after watching two full days of football. It was a very, you know, they're trying to get very innovative, right with all the technology we have now, but sometimes it's just too much. Yeah, I mean, I was trying to figure that out. I will say one thing and I've never been a defensive coordinator. I never will be a defensive coordinator. I begin to wonder if teams when they come up with a game plan to try and defend the rams. If it's as straightforward to a certain extent, trying to neutralize Cooper Cup to the most effective ability they can and forcing Matthew Stafford to use some of his secondary options because he doesn't have the same rapport with Robert Woods. I think we saw on one drive late in the game that it was pretty much all van Jefferson, but if you can bracket Cooper Cup and at least minimize him as that security blanket, what this rams off and so look like going forward. But I guess we'll get a better indication Monday Night Football a week from today. We'll see the rams on the road against the forty-niners and other team that was extremely disappointing. We'll get to them and in a matter of minutes. But while we're sticking with the positive pain, what did you see yesterday that really stood out to you? I think you have to go to Cleveland. I mean, how is a total team effort from the browns? And it started with the defense, pick 6 from Denzel ward. That was an absolute game changer because the bangles were kind of moving the ball in that first drive with ease, obviously that was their script. But it looks like you're going in for the score and then poof, 99 yard interception return. So there's a 14 point swing that kind of sets the tone of that entire game. The two key factors we talked about for Cleveland, both ended up coming to fruition. Joe burrow pressure on 35 percentage dropbacks. Oddly, the two interceptions came from clean pockets. But even if the pressure wasn't getting home, it kind of forced Cincinnati into this dinkin dunk pass game 4.2 completed air yards. For borough. And then you got the focused baker. He's always seemed to play better without OBJ when you look at those splits. And then if you followed baker's path as a quarterback, he's kind of always been the underdog. And it seems to be he does best when there's the most adversity or when he feels like he needs to prove himself. And the idea that was being pitched and at least initially was that OBJ's wide open all day, baker just can't get him the ball. And so we saw a really, really big effort from baker. Ten explosives from the browns offense yesterday. That's how you blow out your in state rival and win 41 16 when you're plus three and turnovers have one of them be a 99 yard pick 6 and then win the explosive battle ten to three. Yeah, it never hurts to try and put all of those things together and Cincinnati plenty of self scouting will be going on during the biweek to see if this team can get its ship back on course given its improbably hot start and then to dud performances in a row. One situationally speaking and one where you thought you would get an all hands on deck type effort that didn't materialize yesterday against Cleveland. Full marks to the Denver Broncos as well pain. I think that was arguably the best we've seen that team play defensively all year, but I wasn't sure if it was the cowboys that contributed or if it was Denver playing with a chip on their shoulder after they lost their defensive leader with von Miller being traded earlier in the week. Very interesting to see how that unfolded. And certainly some sharp money early in the week on Dallas, we saw Pinnacle on game day, go to ten and a half, but there was some buyback quietly on the Broncos. But I thought they were solid in all areas. Front 7 defensively was dominant. I'm really surprised because that was an area with all the injuries, per cell was out, you trade away von as you mentioned. The secondary was fantastic. We know they have some great parts back there, but Bryce Callahan was out. He's a slot corner that is one of the most valuable that really no one talks about, I think, but us, but we know his value, Dax completion percentage, 13 and a half percent below expectation. Worse mark of the week so far. Denver did enough offensively, we love javonte and were probably a little biased, but he was also 6 and a half yards of carry, a 191 yards between Williams and Gordon on the ground and then you had your typical teddy Bridgewater day. Just kind of efficient didn't have a single turnover worthy pass, completion percentage just four and a half percent above expectation. Garrett's the Bronco starting left tackle was out. We thought that could be an issue it wasn't. Denver's own line held up pretty well. I think part of that was the scoreboard, right when you have the lead, you can be multiple. It was important for Denver to play. The game in a neutral state. So your offensive line didn't become a problem. And Denver did that in spades. Not only did they keep it in a neutral state, but they played with a double digit lead for 40 plus minutes. Yeah, I mean, this was a dominant performance in the Broncos. Obviously, the cowboys weren't exactly crisp by any stretch of the imagination dak prescot never appeared to feel comfortable in the pocket early on. I also want to give the Broncos offense a little bit of credit. They did what we've suggested teams need to do, given early season metrics, they went out and they said, you know what? Tim Patrick, go exploit the FrontRunner for defensive player of the year. They threw right at trevon Diggs and really reap the benefits early on. Much of the chagrin of cowboy fans who told me to shut my pie hole after some of my comments during the course of the early game. Yeah, you know, we kind of identified that as being an issue two, three weeks ago, and you just has too much gamble in them. And it's understandable when you start the year with 7 interceptions and two of them are returned touchdowns. You kind of just have that idea in your head that everything I can just go after and attack. But in terms of him just being like a great coverage guy that hasn't bared fruit to this point, and I think I haven't looked, but I know when we broke down last week's game of Minnesota and the cowboys were like this guy's on pace to give up almost 1200 yards. And it wasn't just the Tim Patrick play. They had the Bronco stopped on a third and long and courtland Sutton drew pass interference in the end zone and it gave them first in goal from the one. And so that's how Denver initially got on the board. So it won't show up in the stat sheet. But that was Dave on Diggs and coverage there as well that had the large pass interference there to get the Broncos offense rolling early. Yeah, we'll see. All of a sudden, the Broncos with back to back wins, pacing now hopefully with a potential win on the horizon against the eagles to put us in good standing for our wind tunnel before their schedule gets a little bit more difficult. Down the stretch. As far as other good things that stood out to you wasn't sure what you picked up on during the course of your viewing over the weekend? Think you have to give mccoys from.

"Point leaders of the it was a double digit lead and they let the dolphins come back. And i think the dolphins at that point we're leading by two. And then the falcons. I think a turnover and then kicked a field goal and they they just got the ball downfield field remember. I was like man. You know the dolphins offense is so mad at their defense or letting him do that. Yeah they because. The dolphins came back and with l. field. Got the lead with. I think it was a minute. Some left that'd been two minutes and then atlanta just slowly move down to feel god and feel range kicked it with no time clock. yeah It was it was so cla yeah. I was rooting for the dolphins. I now but we did see the the carolina panthers lose. That was nice. Boy the giant. Did i tell you we were pretty good at seeing. What's comment and we said at the beginning year in was like who the panthers are awesome and everything and i'm like now now but we. I said offseason that they're gonna be a mess. And without mccaffrey. Nothing yeah and they've actually ended up pulling their quarterback in the fourth quarter right because he was playing sarno he's a lot of interceptions and just not not playing oil which you know when they dry when they got him they trade i would. I went to look gave him on. Alica he's not good. This is why this is great for us so that was good. It was good. Watch the game yesterday and get some Well roundedness is going to be good to watch the saints tonight. Hope they get beat up but you know seattle. They're not playing to good. They got the russell wilson his out. Broken jaw gino. He's gonna be playing quarterback and you know he played great when he came in the first game and then the second game. That's so good this game. We'll see how it goes. I think it's going to be very similar teams. I was just thinking like j. Gino njspcas are really process theme level all very similar. But nora's was defenses a lot better than seattle so like that might be the difference of the game. So i've i'm playing molly and fantasy this week. She has Tom brady and the buccaneer defense who ended up scoring twenty five points. And i have mike evans in curse god would so i am fifteen points behind her and i've got one player tonight and it's alex collins running back for the seattle seahawks which is horrible. It could go either way. Could but it's yeah maybe not but a lot of faith in it last week. I was like a shoo-in to win. The guy had one player left the baltimore titan andrews and he scored thirty six points and i lost. So i'm on a four louis streak so i'm not I don't. I don't like my chances. I wish i had a bigger cushion. You swiped my players in the draft purposely just as good. Then you're not gonna win. You know how i'd be trying to. This is like the one year. I've tried really hard to. That's the worst part. I know like. I've been playing the waiver wire. I've been researching. I've been keeping track of who's hurt and it's not helping me all right guys. "Ninety year together was even more remarkable. It took to unbelievable people you to unique individuals to even stay that low together because if you take a look at these other relationships with the exception being chuck knoll and terry bradshaw. There was a type of warmness. There were the type of. I don't know if you wanna say friend. Father son mentor relationship or something like that. But one of the things that made the popovich. Tim duncan relationship works so well if the fact that those guys were really were fond in admired each other. They'd loved each other not just because of what they did for each other. As far as being a basketball player and be the basketball coach they just loved each other with people they might each other as human beings. Tim duncan admired great popovich. Not he was a great coach because he was a hell of a human being. Which by the way. I think he is great popovich loved. Tim duncan like a son not because he gave him. You know so many awards. There's so many victories and so many accolades and so much. Money and steady ability to be in the argument is being one of the greatest coaches and nba history and such great popovich. That's part of the appreciation that he had for. Tim duncan but it's also because he admires. Tim duncan for being the man that he is a personal that those two had they developed quickly which allowed them to stay in the relationship long they did and by the way they're still has admitted before the the friendship the bond the father son brotherhood. But i think the way both personalities were set up. I think the way that bella check coach brady. It was remarkable and says a lot about tom. Brady bill belichick. They were able to sustain. "Have a pretty good defense. We have a coach bryan floors who's defensive-minded on the offense coordinating situation is an absolute mess. Where you have three guys co coordinating the offense which is really never a good thing in terms of putting the game plan together in terms of making decisions such the offense of in you don't really have any skill players. The best player that you have in terms of the running back wide receiver combo for miami's jaden waddell who is a rookie. And he's not ready to carry the load of what quarterback whiskey what wide receiver really does. Carry the load on a football team. The quarterback position again is in and into a situation where. We don't know exactly what's going to be happening happening to is going to miss his second game. He was placed on injured reserve. So he's going to be missing another game after this. They're still some questions about tua whether he can. He can be starting quarterback on a team. That could win a championship. Jacoby bruce set is nothing more than a short term solution. always In the mind of the miami dolphins they were going to have a real opportunity to make some noise after the strongest showing from last season. But right now. They're sitting out there sitting at one and two disappointing loss to las vegas in overtime but it was lay bare and laid evident that the miami dolphins need a quarterback. And you need a quarterback very badly and there's one in houston the sitting around that The miami dolphins had interested before you know the asking price was a little bit too steep now. Jay glazer a fox reporting that houston is starting to soften on their request in terms of what they wanted to return for the acquisition of deshaun watson. So i think again miami especially if they follow the one in three. I'm not saying it's time to panic but speaking about miami one or three albeit in a division where look as buffalo and then after that. Who do you really see. That's going to be a challenge in terms of new england. Who's struggling and breaking in a new quarterback where you have the new york jets. A new quarterback zach wilson and. They're struggling. They're over three right now. So you have a division to where you can make some noise possibly but again one four and the buffalo goes to three and one or she. Miami falls to one or three. The buffalo improves to three one. Yes it's only a two game lead. But are you really confident of buffalo continues that momentum miami's still having questions on the office of that they can make up those games especially as mentioned before losing at home a second time. The season to a team like indianapolis still looking for their first victory. I don't know. I don't know so this is going to be again. This is going be an important game. Arizona Cardinals' Kliff Kingsbury on Hot Seat?
"All right my friend. We've covered three quarters of the national football league and we save kind of the best for last as far some of the most competitive divisions in the national football league so we may as well starting out in my neck of the woods relatively speaking with the arizona cardinals who find themselves pain as six to one hundred dollars to win the nfc west. This season their win. Total sits at eight and a half. You do have to lay a buck in a quarter if you wanna go. Under that total third season in the valley of the sun for cliff kingsbury last two years of tailed off in the latter. Half of the schedule. When you look at how this team performed. They lost six out of their final nine games. Second year in a row as we said they fallen apart down the stretch. Arizona elite league and penalties and you begin to worry about the decision making enga- management that oak liffey boy has shown since taking over last winning season for this franchise came back in two thousand fifteen where they were pummeled by the panthers in the playoffs but point differential last year plus forty three best amongst teams. That didn't finish with a winning record. Missed out a postseason berth. By virtue of a tiebreaker is the chicago bears edge. Them out schedule though starts all away from home where they'll play three or four on the highway to kick things off when you look at the arizona cardinals pain. We know it's all about the offense but they've also made some pretty good editions at least in my opinion on the defensive side as well arizona's tough for me to gauge. And it doesn't help that. They're playing in this division. Which is probably the most competitive and i don't really know i'm sold on kingsbury yet. And we've mentioned this number a couple times over the years but i think it's really interesting because it's mind blowing. You can get an nfl job with a resume like kingsbury. "This is what you wanna see again. The secondary's loaded and jake you're talking about the offensive line. I mean i think maybe the dolphins are definitely going to be going around with some teams and hopefully no trying to figure some of that veteran deaths there maybe you dangle one of these corners maybe dangle one of those receivers because they are loaded units But two fold you know one of these guys go down and that could be the entire season josh. Got one left at. It's specially guys are still here. You wanna talk about some special teams bats request on Asher be data give credit where credit's due jason sanders two for two field goals his long as from thirty five. And then you got michael pool lardy yet. He did have a touchback but he dropped two balls inside the twenty including a cake that went. Sixty eight yards so josh it seems like whether it was Darren rizzi of a couple years ago or whoever brian for his liking in a given year Specialties seems to be one of the strengths for the miami dolphins. It doesn't it almost felt like something we had to bring up because announcers jason sanders kicked the one zero. And he does this. Guy's aces pelosi. that one. He boomed the the return. Man dropped at fumbled into the end zone. And try to run it back. I got what two yards because it would have been a safety. I mean that's the type of stuff i mean. This guy changed field position. And you know it was such a small move and so minor it seemed at the time but it just seems like the dolphins believe knowstone turn and trying to upgrade a position. At least that's the first game and what we continue here. Throughout training camp is at mike clark is the left leg of god and you know we saw firsthand vs chicago bears and it was risky business. Bring in someone who is coming off a year-long seems to be working out of course one preseason game So we're not gonna completely say that he's the next Hall of fame punter. But josh we had some practices with the chicago bears moving forward. The miami dolphins are now going to have some practices with the atlanta falcons beginning on wednesday. So we're according to this on monday. I thought it'd be a good idea to go through a little preview. Ninety four another dollar goes into the jar josh. Save for wrap up here after. The dolphins finally began the judaism. Forty-one nfl season of yet. The preseason no just you know from a overall perspective. I mean the defense look like they were advertising. The offense you know you definitely saw some promising signs in the limited action but guys like jake said thank you guys so much for listening to this podcast. "About the miami dolphins offensive line. We're going to branch out a little bit of question of resources running up the middle. Is it possible adult stuff into the one year by twice. Malcolm brown had a fabulous boss of the dolphins did average or point one yards a carry savannah. Med was six or forty miles. Gaskin was for for nineteen malcolm brown. Had the kaelin blotches jordan howard. Special a night for eight. Jared dokes whispery for do the dolphins judge to be zander. Best runs when they were stretches. The outside and i think i kind of added patmos on the back here a little bit because i kind of had this idea that this situation the dolphins by find themselves in. They just cannot walk against the run. And you know you say that your kaelin balaj was terrible. Jordan howard was terrible now. Everyone wants to stay malcolm. Brown is terrible but he is never just as simple as that. I just think the way. The dolphins constructed their offensive line. It was a focus on the past protection. You think about what they're gonna do in this offense terms of spreading it out binding five guys wide. You don't necessarily need the guys trump the middle and then you could obviously resort with that and say while there is something to the one yard line twice. That's plate me to make any. It just seems that the dolphins are trying to find that one running back that can be lusaka. Play that's it doesn't matter what's happening. I'm not going to sit here and blame brown for all those issues going nine for time and time again that were guys living in the backfield odd but it would be nice if there was someone that could get that yard. I don't know quite willing to commit a retirement but that is seems to be the one guy. Offense is missing outside of maybe a few offense biden jake My big surprise. I guess was that i saw malcolm brown starting running back you know he was the guy getting those first touches and i guess. Maybe it's because he's a newcomer in here. But i'll all signs point. A miles. gas can be that guy with the draft classes and avoiding the running back situation. Malcolm brown started so. I don't know how to feel about that. I do know in our podcast. We joke that. Is he going to fill that jordan. Yes clearly is we saw right. I mean he's gonna go to the golan get stopped when you don't expect them to. I think he caught a pass where he should have had a first down. He tried to cut back for some reason. A lot of people are upset with that. So i guess jake when the question is can they were the middle. Is it possible. I don't know if it is. This is where i would like to see. And you know it's kind of a joke but it's not your got christian wilkinson. The game playing fullback gave you the do the ball. Let them try to get a one yard. We don't care how the hell you score. Just make it into the end zone. I mean at least. That's the way i feel so jake. A lot of those stretches outside runs. That's kind of how these backs are. Designed you know a gaskin salvin akhmed. We mentioned getting more involved in the in the receiving game. You specifically i mean knock. Men called that awesome touchdown the wheel route from jacoby brisket or just call them brisket from now on and i felt god cast came from them. Jake brisket it just it. That's perfect perfect. Yeah and then. I think i was the one that had that that deep touchdown in in training camp. I think that we saw the dolphins were showing the couple angles him running down the ceylon and burning someone. So this is just an aspect of the dolphins offense that maybe we should become accustomed to. But you definitely need to pick up one yard. What was after that biggest play. I think they threw it to what mac hans and he got down inside the one and then it was just run after after. Run to stop so Jake i don't know if they can a lot of words to say i don't know if they can bring back larry's on the best fullback in dolphins history. I gotta say didn't think pearl tucker looks too bad. I mean he popped up a couple times and he seemed to kinda look comfortable out there on the field you have to wonder if fullback will be positioned. The miami dolphins decided to keep and josh. Kinda hit the down the head. I think it's it's gonna be a three way a battle. I mean in terms of fantasy. You're gonna see a little bit of troubles from the miami dolphins. They welcome brown's gonna be that decider think gaskins probably going to be the main guy with sixty percent of the snaps then sullivan Meds that change of pace back that you really need But you know what each of these guys are. And i think it's kind of interesting to watch jordan scarlet. Jared dokes because jared dokes kind of reminds me of many gaskin especially early on and jordan scarlett. I think can do a lot of sonic medicate book. Yeah i think again. It's one of those things where just because fans look at a scarlet dokes and they don't really see those big flash names. I mean this. Coaching staff is just gonna preach competition and let the cream rise to the top so when next year on those guys like you keep the running back room row and running. I guess yeah. I guess i should known this but i they. They changed the practice squad. Sixteen last year keeping it to sixteen this year. So you know guys like scarlet some of those other guys receivers that everyone's in love with kirk mirrors those those are the place for those guys I guess we start this quote here from austin zhaxi said yeah. It's difficult at times. One of the things we stress is getting into the red zone scoring to have. I know one was a turnover and the other was just lost to downs. It's frustrating for sure. So there's austin jackson again are left tackle basically saying we gotta figure this out before the season starts. Jake ona number seven man sense again. I'm terrible at asking questions. I'm going to do this one. How many games does mac start this year. He called both targets from low for twenty yards on saturday. Best ability is availability everett. Here jake i mean collins is as available as any of these guys right and we continue to see the report. He has with two-time below the chemistry. Those two guys have if macon's is starting games for the dolphins. I don't know if that's a good thing. But i mean i almost feel like it's expected at this point in my right. It's just kind of the role he plays. Which i think is so interesting. And i think it's going to be the role that devante parker places. Well his his bit largest catch the day he basically ran down. The field came right over. The middle sat down in front of the safety. It made the catch. I found the chains going. I just think it's a nice bath to someone like devante parker because he gonna have the will fuller's jalen waddles. Everyone like that kind of keeping the secondary bag keeping the safety deep. So you need someone who's big physical. Can you fight over the linebackers and get into the middle. The field the weak spots at the zone and really take advantage of it. We saw gets sticky. Do it on that where to ahead to touch and made the right read but having someone like holidays. I don't think it's a bad thing. I don't think starting him as necessarily a bad thing. He's reliable if you can get the ball to him and seems to not make his receivers work to do hard in terms of having to break three Tight window so josh. I mean i wouldn't be surprised to see my columns four to six games this year. I don't necessarily think i'd be worried about it either. Think you know. Maybe with the way they're looking at mccown's and uncertain if this was an exact quote from the three rs for guys. But i do believe they alluded to him. Taking some reps at tight end subject. You know when you see. Mac line out there on the outside you know to create those mismatches. I mean he's six four hundred twenty one pounds. I joke. i don't know if you saw at fro..

"News jazz. Here's the real question. Is the bears offense bad. Or is the miami dolphins defense really booking that good you gotta think about it josh. Chicago didn't record a first down until they were thirty. Seconds left in the first half yeah. That's that's impressive. jake. And i mean. I think it's a little bit of both here again. They're getting some of the kinks out with the bears offense. You know andy. Dalton's andy dalton for being completely honest and my defense i mean. I don't know how you felt jake. But i mean the run defense. Look better we without exhibiting howard. I'm byron jones out there. Nick needham. I mean he played awesome had to pass breakups. I think he was actually a number one. Great player for the dallas sticking at ninety point three. Sorry might get sick. He was a dolphins number one rated player from pro football focus. Nickname was a ninety. So i mean this guy was out there a ball now and defensive player everyone offensive player and you have written here chicane griffin. I mean i posted that playmate and that was so incredible. Seem explode through the line. Almost get to the quarterback get to fields air and then chased him down from behind. Force that ball out so again. That wasn't the first team defense. I think that's what you're asking here. But i do think jake. The dolphins defense is a little bit better than what we expected to see this early on. Yeah josh i. I think i have to agree with you. There christian wilkins. I saw him kind of off the page with a an error early. It just seemed like he missed a tackle but then he made up with it with a blow up. Near the line of scrimmage run play and then he defended pass so that was pretty cool to see our aircrew lockdown at that was also my justed coleman kind of made connect with goofy when he tried to hurdle for some reason. That's certainly what you wanna do. The preseason but yeah just. I think miami's defense good. There's a lot of depth than they're going to be part of more questions so let's keep on keep on keeping on here. That is the big. That is the big thing there. Jake you did say depth. And i mean i think that was what was obviously most impressive to me was just whether it's a defensive. Line linebackers the secondary. I mean depth steps. Step is what this unit has. I'm gonna take number three. I want to read this off. Because i failed the first one so i mean again. Complete tailspin on monday morning Jake number three. Is it time we accept the fact that you wrote this. I don't want to take care of the is it time we accept the fact that it's at least possible that age. Twenty eight and sixth year to keen grants. Best season may becoming. How much does it have to jane. Waddell being in the picture. So jake i mean you mentioned here. We're seeing this all season. Hearing that you grant. I mean for lack of a better word seems like a little bit of a different player. You know he looked explosive out there. I mean that punt that he returned after waddles. I mean water looked explosive man. I mean we're all on the receipt. We were all excited watching him. You know change direction. I we were goosebumps and then he came back and almost did the same thing. I kind of joked are the dolphins gonna run a to punt return system like to kick richard system. I don't know what they're gonna do back there. It's it's definitely a nice problem to have and it was nice to see you know kim grant again. Elevate his game a little bit because you could just see him out. There looked like he was playing a little bit harder after he obviously saw jalen waddell takeoff that big return but as far as receiver. Jake i don't know if this is the year that we see each take off in this receiving core because again it's loaded loaded loaded but every day. A new injury seems to pop up. So your guesses goes my man. What do you think. I think the best opportunity for grant would be if he gets mismatched. Mass you know what. The third or fourth cornerback. Somehow the linebackers on him. That'd be fun to see. It was back down to one thing. Josh matt is his ability to catch the ball. He can do that. I think he will pretty much locked himself up in a spot and the thing i think is so interesting. Here is the competition. And i'm not trying to say you know kim granted at work before. Joe walsh showed up. We saw the videos on instagram. We saw the videos on twitter about how often he's working during the off season but maybe having some out there who can do what jalen model did on that twenty four yard punt return just unlock set a little bit of extra sauce. That might be needed for him to really prove to boras end company that He really deserves a this roster. Despite so many receivers jalen waddell was asked about the offense overall performance today and he thought it was smooth. He said we got our flow going. It was good to compete really. It was good to compete against someone else other than our guys. I think it was a good day and obviously Was trying to say. Thank god against xavi. How buyer jets data island. Yeah it's much easier. You're not going against the dolphins secondary. But jake i think maybe i. I'm not gonna speak for you but i do think you know as hard as i've been on the second that he's cut or you know picked up or traded. I do think you know that could be what it takes to push him. Elevate him to that next level. I mean people joking. What if he ends up with in kansas city with patrick mahomes again. I mean then. I'll probably draft interesting right and my fantasy team. That's probably what will happen in that situation. Moving on jake. You mentioned the offense a lot of the offense success. This season is going to be surrounding the offensive line. And you know we talked about a little bit on the pre. Show some of the concerns. We had But that was more focused on the right side line. Now we're sitting here talking. Oh shit you know. This is the left side that we might need to be concerned about. So jake planet simple. Should we worry about austin jackson. As the teams left tackle. Without a lot of depth behind him you have written Five pressures panky and jackson allowed the second. Most pressures among tackles in week one. I think he was rated a thirty point. Five or one or something insane by pro football focus and again. We don't take those that's not gospel. You know those are not one hundred percent set in stone but to get a thirty. I mean i think jake you and i could probably went out. There may put up a thirty s coverage that might be pushing a little bit but he did having the pressures on eighteen snaps bit concerning civil like austin jackson. And it's just of music thing about the fact that you know despite us expecting all these guys to take that step. The dolphins don't have that depth on the offensive line especially after losing glucose. So i'm not ready to complete smash the panic button about objects did i mean. I think this dashboard drinking beer for about a year at the is the second year in the league But you do wish. There's a little bit adapt a little bit of. Let's say that let's set a line. Josh is really started. All part we think about kinley. I could burke fighting over there. I just seems like it's very shaky ground entity cool to see someone like learn coleman the teams seven round pick. He played at umass a little bit of a smaller school to say the least But he has the physical traits becoming offensive lineman. So i'm hoping maybe throughout the preseason regency start to slut by that second tackle spot and really start to kind of give the dolphins a little bit adapt at that might kind of sure with offensive line is really missing. Probably not but we can hope yet. And i hate that. We're so down on these second-year player so soon you know because again we talked about. Chicago's defense defensive. Front is pretty damn good so even if that was you know. Some of their backups. And things like that. I mean get sick to get sacked context. Yeah and again. i don't know man. I think you know we definitely have a reason to be concerned because again if if offensive line can't block and can't take that next step. I don't think this offense can't either jake. But with austin jackson young player against second season..

Nagy benches Justin Field for Andy Dalton
"And another team and their actions. That aren't making a whole lot of sense now. Are the chicago bears and head coach matt nagy because this week matt nagy came out and obviously he's in a win or else win or lose your job type of situation in chicago but nagy came out and essentially committed to andy dalton as a starting quarterback this week which is just bonkers especially when in the nfl draft. You traded a future first round. Pick to go up and take justin fields out of ohio state number eleven overall justin field as your future. Even if matt nagy and gm ryan pace. Aren't there certainly hoping that justin fields shows enough. This year this season not just to save their jobs but to position the bears to go back to the again and maybe win a playoff game and show that there can be some promise with this quarterback in that franchise and i think the justin fields has that ability. I think that when you watch him he can make all the throws. He's won a lot of games at ohio state. He's not your typical state quarterback he committed to penn state transferred to d- committed to penn state rather went to georgia faced a lot of adversity in georgia overcame at ohio state. One big games has all the arm strength. has all the accuracy can throw on. The run is mobile. And you're gonna put him on the bench holding a clipboard behind. Andy dalton

"The bears manage this draft with excellent. The the biggest criticism against against patients always been he can dragged on day three sometime. He can draft on day two but they won. He has never really been able to truly get right. This was like we were in a parallel universe. The day one into they nailed day three and they already had a good track record on day three so this could be one of the better halls that we've ever seen the getting to draft and i'm so excited to be part of it. I love this exciting. You should have heard everyone in chicago that the talk shows were crave of the white game when they announced the fields pick it was like scoreless game like the top of the third and everyone starts cheering. Which is the way that the city is going when when the bears now have finally made a move that the fans have called for the fans are going to surround jokes and field and they're going to back him whereas with trubisky and cutler kind of like this like really odd relationship like Okay you might have gone through touchdown today. But i still remember that and don't interception through against washington we to like. I think that this is not only going to change a culture team but the culture of the fan base and the way that this team drafts way. This team developed talent and the side of the ball teams focuses on. Is there since our topic. Starting last week was draft picks. You were completely wrong about. Is there any chance. Justin fields is a bust. Well yeah i i would say. Yeah and i'm gonna say that for two reasons number one. The biggest knock against steel this year especially from what i saw because every time a house. They played their national television. So i watch every game and the one thing which feels and this is gonna hawk. Bears fan is. He is very very prone to making stupid mistake. Throw in the end zone. Or maybe keep the flame alive. Stir a little too long and throws a double coverage and it gets picked and you know i would prefer to have a quarterback that's going to make those big type type of gamble plays then have a very very conservative offense and not really take shots on the feel like well what we saw with nick. Foles and trubisky also didn't really take too many shots down the field and that's just the way the offense is laid out So i would say he's very very disaster-prone but now in today's nfl. That doesn't matter as much. Because you have disastrous guys. Like josh allen kyla berry. That was their biggest knock out of college. Now the two of the top quarterbacks in the league so i think as a fellow is gonna fit fields well but it's also a very very not not a very good not very good sign. The second thing is and i know this is more of a minor thing Some people believe that the reason why feel fell is because he told teams in his interviews. He is then. He has epilepsy apparently in the family. like he said that the past generations like family members of just kind of grown out of it which i believe in common with epilepsy But there has to be a reason why field spell that we don't know about because somebody was that type of resume and that type of talent. He was a top quarterback coming out of high school or no. He was number two behind. Trevor lawrence he was in all in all fairness was the number two at least in terms of credentials quarterback prospect of this draft There has to be a reason. Why fell and i don't know if it was the epilepsy. I don't know if it was something else with with the physical. His pro refine combine with fine There there's something that we don't know or that we know but aren't making too big of a deal of that. I think could be kinda kinda weird because there's no reason why denver shouldn't have taken justin field. Unless denver knows that they're going to be taking. Aaron rodgers gets released because the packers are not going to release him now when they only save five million dollars when they can save twenty five million dollars in june and unless that's what denver is counting on. And there's a back door deal with that. It's the only that's the only explanation for the broncos we'll see ultimately i don't i think that field is safer prospects in the draft. Especially when you look at guys like wilson and trae. let's the really emerged. This year. Land emerged last year but only played one game because of the after the pushing their football season. Spring and in comparison to the other thought to the five total quarterback. Trevor lawrence is all century type prospects. Or he's not even in this conversation. But that wilson his receivers won't of that type of space in in the nfl especially with the with the week schedule at byu played. Trae land historically at cs. Quarterbacks have not translated well to the nfl joe flacco and maybe carson wentz through the two exemptions johnson fields in a draft were. The bears needed a quarterback was the safest pack would have been the safest if they're already in the top ten and was the best guy. That could've gotten a ruben. Trevor warrants and. I think that just has to fall in the bears player development. And it'll be another story of a great guy that the bears got somebody highly touted out of college and they describe what the development so. It'll be interesting to see this. next year. And the years to follow works deals eventually becomes a starter how much emphasis placed on surrounding talent and developing him and giving him the the excuse giving him the the attention and the effort and the energy needed to develop into the franchise quarterback that if we're all being honest the bears have not had since world war two all right so we did promise that we would bring some more Answers to last week's question because we had so many great answers to you know who was the one draft pick. You were completely wrong about. Let's begin part two with a former bears player who was a fourth round draft. Pick in two thousand two. He was expected to go on day. One maybe day two but that was a year when you know there was julius peppers. Dwight free any these guys. I remember clearly what they said about him out of florida. He was the sec. Defensive player of the year florida's leader in sacks but he was considered a twitter. He worked out at linebacker. He worked out at as a defensive lineman and then the ultimate kick in the gut. His teammate florida's kicker was taken before him in the draft eight years later to division titles and in nfc conference championship and top. Five in bears franchise history with forty three and a half sacks. I would say he proved the prognosticators wrong. So as we begin to jason. Let's start with alex. Brown who many people will remember his playing days with the bears and we asked him because many people were wrong about him in the two thousand and two nfl draft who.

"That means you. After a long law year that most chicago bears fans wished to forget. You did that thinkable. You were predictable. You basically stuck to your guns and you did what you would normally do in a situation as such when he presented itself. It's like x. Plus y. equals z. X. plus y. equals z. It wasn't as if you were playing breed dimensional chess on. It wasn't like you were playing a game that nobody understood playing a game that nobody thought that you could play in fact. It was so predictable. It was so predictable and the writing was on the wall that we knew who you're gonna take. We knew who you were going to take and we knew the process a wet in how you're going to get that accomplished how you gonna get that accomplish and i have to say i am amazed. I am amazed because you just wore me dow. You wore me down. You grind me down. And to the point where i do my hands up and say i cannot be mad at you for being you that will make me a villain that will make me the bad guy. How can i dislike you. How can i not like you. How can i not love you win. Already know is who is you. Show me over. The years shown me in the rest over the years of who you are and how. You're going to do things so for me. Giving credit when credit is due. Yeah you heard me. I'm going to give credit when credit is due. That means you ryan pace. That means you. I know in the past. I've said some things. In fact i sit a lot of things and it remains true today. No jodi zoll. But it remains true today but i must give proper credit. I have to give you your proper credit because the thing is you stuck by your guns you stuck to your conviction you did what you do in fact how can i put this be you you were you. You decided that a calculated risk was worth taking you. Put all your eggs in one basket to make a decision that everybody knew us going to make. No one on this planet thought otherwise. Who in a right frame of mind. I thought that you were going to trade up in draft trade up in the draft to get a quarterback the one you want me to be upset if me to be mad a ryan pace for big who he is that will make me a bad guy that would make me the villain. I'm not the bad guy here on not the villain here. I just came to the conclusion that the rest of us came to you. Were going to do what you do. In fact in fact coach nagy has already given us hit on how the whole all in operation works be you so have you going to be you stay true to yourself and organization decided to keep to keep nagy and to keep everyone else in his same position. How would that make me look how then make the rest of us look at. We expect did something different. The evidence is dan. The receipts are there. We undestand how you operate. We undestand how you work. Granted you don't speak granted you don't talk about it but your actions have clearly shown us this is who are. I came to the conclusion. I've come to the point. I accept this. There's nothing that i can do about it. There's no reason for me to get angry to get mad to start singing and dancing and beating my chest like a baseball bat to pin yada y. I would like to be healthy. I will like to get through the season healthy. I would like to maintain a healthy blood pressure. Maintain healthy lifestyle or better yet. A healthy agenda in this healthy agenda led me to this. Wow it's true that you are you and you were being you. I have to think though who pulled the trigger made the decision on getting that particular getting that particular guy getting that particular player. It had to be coached nagy. It had to be matt nagy. He's the genius behind the operation. He's the brains behind operation. In fact i'm holding my breath waiting for the moment that a jet sweep. I'm holding my breath and waiting for the moment. The icy jet sweep jet. Sweeps is what i dream about. Jets sweeps is being. That will keep me up at night. Not the way you think is going to keep me up at night. Because i'm so excited for it. I'm so excited i'm edge. See i noticed coming. I know wins coming. I know we're down. It's coming how you know. All of that. Because coach nagy is being him. It's.

"The Chicago Bears with 39th pick in the 2000 or 21 NFL draft. The Chicago Bears Select Kevin Jenkins tackle Oklahoma State. So tell me, Jake, It's big, big man. 66 £320. You know, Oklahoma State had at a very good football team. Probably better on defense this year than they were on offense. And yet that that was a big guy. You don't have to watch a lot of football. If you watched Oklahoma State and watch this guy move. He's got a lot of athletic ability. A lot of football moxie. It gave some Broncos news. They just extended the fifth year option on readily chub that just came across as well. No surprise there, right? I mean, I'll just throw this out. Al can't can't see me. But I mean, no surprise that Bradley Chubb had the fifth year option picked up. I think I think it's pretty clear The Broncos had every intent on doing that. Oh, yeah, I think that, um that was the easiest decision that the Broncos have made in a while that that one was easy. You know, before we move on here, I talked to some. I talkto four coaches last night. About, Um, Justin fields Since we're talking about the Chicago Bears here in the second, um Chicago bears Were the happiest team in the entire NFL last night. It may be even more happier than the New York Jets and possibly the San Francisco 40 Niners to get Justin Fields. And the word is that Matt Nagy and his staff and management and ownership We're trying to get to the Denver Broncos position at number nine. They tried to get them 10 day. They just wanted this kid so bad that they would just as happy as they could be. Get him at number 11. Look at the hall that they got for this kid at number 11. I mean, they gave up another first round draft pick next year to get this kid and now they're just they feel like Their team is finally set in there. They're so hopeful and that entire group over there is just delighted to have Justin feels over there. I mean, it was. It was incredible because I was trying to figure out what happened with the Broncos. And then you know, I call one coach on the way home and then I called three. You know, today before the show, and it's incredible, they said they had no flaws on Justin Field and they couldn't understand it. And I had one coach. Tell me There's always a guy every year that falls and we don't know why, but it happens all the time. Sure, I mean, just think back to Aaron Rodgers. Yeah, I've been in Roger's thought He was gonna be the first pick in the draft to the San Francisco 40 Niners and he went 20 something 24th. I believe the Greendale total by the way they pick is in for Detroit's gonna be defensive tackle Leave on Rosary, Kay. The defensive tackle the other defensive tackle in this class on really quickly here, guys. A side note after the Broncos pick was announced, former running back Phil Lindsay taking to Twitter with two laughing, crying face, Emojis. You mean after their pick was announced today or last night right now, after the Broncos running back pick was announced, Phil Lindsay put up two laughing, crying face Emojis on Twitter. Wow. Here's the Commissioner Goodell.

We roomed in went to talk about. Nfl stuff so you know. Look the bottom line is there is much more these days than we've had before the nfl. Name image likeness ruling. The allston case will Way to decide how far the ncaa gets to govern this. And ironically when you talk to some of the big time athletic directors all over college Sports they've been trying to figure out how to govern power five as you know versus everybody else versus division two in three verses the other sports versus title nine. They're all bunch of level of financial commitment. And you gotta cover all of them the name image likeness stuff doesn't just involve the top marketable player in college football or basketball. Every year trickle down to all five hundred thousand student athletes in the ncaa men and women so it is not an easy decision. Remember the ncaa. Mark everett last year said. We're going to do it. We both knew the devil was in the details. And it's a big devil.
