Kevin 'Votestradamus' McCullough Breaks Down Various Races
"Kevin, you were just making a point. Please continue. I want to break this down because in Virginia, New Jersey, you had two different approaches in which both states really had a Republican push. Jack chiarelli and Glen youngkin both outperformed what the polls were saying going into election day. The difference was in loudoun county in Virginia, the Democrats tried to stop the counting. They didn't really have a reason for it. They just said there were abnormal abnormalities. They needed to stop and check on whatever. They were going to start the next morning. His lawyers immediately said, nope, we're going to keep going. You're going to do this now. They took it to a judge, judge said, yep, you got to keep going. They kept going. Glenn youngkin was governor of Virginia the next morning. In New Jersey, Bergen county pulled the same thing that loudoun county did, only they were allowed to stop. And most people in Bergen county went to bed on election night thinking that Jack chiarelli had been elected governor. It was a big upset. I was one of them. I reported from the chiarelli campaign that night for different media groups. He had a significant lead in the state. The next morning, when Bergen county suddenly had the votes counted, there had been more than a 100,000 something to zero swing in just the one county. So here's my first caution from my calling yesterday. Anywhere you see this stuff trying to happen. If the RNC has not lawyered up and ready to take people to court, the minute that it gets tried, you're going to be in trouble in those races. But my hunch is that there's a lot more people watching out this year to make sure that we don't have those types of things happening, particularly in the Senate races in Georgia, Pennsylvania, Arizona and Nevada, which if we win those four, we win the Senate. Last thing I'll say on this, it is very, very important that no matter what race you think you're voting for, that you make sure that you take three to four people with you tomorrow

"Northern Kansas City, the northern Kansas City school system has announced that they have some new enforcement procedures to limit cell phone use at school. The district has stated that from 7 43 a.m. to two 40 p.m. student cell phone use is prohibited during class time from bell to bell. Cell phones are only to be used before or after school during a passing period or during lunch. Because they say that students help when you at school has been identified as a tremendous distraction. And while the deployment of the district issued macbooks, cell phones are now unnecessary for academics throughout the school day. I think this is a great idea. And I think it goes to the home as well and getting your kids off social media. I want to talk to Tom Holland is the actor who plays Spider-Man. And he just came out and made an announcement about leaving social media. And I think a step like this helps take your kid away from the constantly having their head in the phone. Here's Tom Holland. Hi guys. So I've been trying to make this video for about an hour now and for someone that has spent the last 1314 years however long I've been acting. Is it that long? Yeah, and probably is that long. I can not seem to say what I need to say without umming and arriving every 5 minutes. So I'm going to try again. So I have taken a break from social media for my mental health because I find Instagram and Twitter to be overstimulating to be overwhelming. I get caught up and I spiral when I read things about me online and ultimately it's very detrimental to my mental state, so I decided to take a step back and delete the app. That's fantastic. I think it's a great message for kids. I really do, because they have their heads in the phone all the

And then, you know, that kind of leads into my other thing about self care. I know you and I both are huge believers in self care. What do you do to take care of yourself? And I'm going to kind of preempt it that like, you know, one of the things I love on your Instagram feed is like, a lot of times you go for a walk in the morning and you're just kind of like giving out these randomized thoughts and somebody that popped your head in a really great side to do it like the daily walk. What else do you love to do for self care? So yeah, I mean, I'm a big, I love jiu-jitsu and martial arts. I do that. I'm currently injured so really right now I'm sticking to just like my morning walks and I do weightlifting. So typically, again, we'll probably get into this at some point, but my routine is everything, right? I want to get into a state of flow within minutes of waking up. And the best way to do that is to get your first win of the day. So, you know, I get up early, which I can now, because I've changed some nighttime habits, talking about that. But I get up early, you know, I get my teeth brushed, I get my running shoes on, I go downstairs, I crush my water with lemon and salt. I have my black coffee ready to go. My wife is with me. We get out the door, and we do our hour walk. Come home, get the kids up, get the kids fed. And then we have breakfast together. You know, we talk about life. I'm like, I'm already in this almost like runner's high. I'm just like, hey, yeah. You know? I go to the gym. And I've done two workouts spent quality time with my wife and kids all before 11 a.m. 12 new. And that's when the late side. So that does a lot for my physical health. It does a lot for my mental health. It keeps me on the path. And then yeah, you know, you're out your exterior is a product of your interior world, and it's like having that, I bring that energy to work now. And that is why I really do it, you know? Exactly. Yeah, and I'm a huge believer in culture and culture. I always say culture flows down doesn't flow up on culture starts with you. Your energy, your attitude, it sets the tone for the team. That's it. 100%. So looking back over your life of the places you've dined at, what would you say is the best meal you've ever had? My chiarella is my wife and I were out in so many great meals to be honest. But one thing that I always tell people, like probably the best thing I've ever eaten was a Michael Chi chiarelli is restaurant and I don't know why that is escaping my head right now. But my wife and I went there for our ten year anniversary and we got the like it's a ravioli with gnocchi dough and I had the truffle scream spinach and they're running egg yolk in it and it was like brown butter. It was just like heaven on a plate. But some of my favorite meals were like blue ribbon on solvent in New York City. I love the old school stuff, you know? Those are like, I love the old school. I love it. I love the restaurants that were in gramercy tavern and Gotham, death and bar and grill. And I love those places.

"Possible So brigida told me her family's keeping their bags packed so they can flee quickly if the Russian army does break through NPR's Brian man in Odessa thank you Thank you Before 2020 ever every modern presidential candidate who lost eventually conceded Just moments ago I spoke with George W. Bush and congratulated him on becoming the 43rd president of the United States I have just called president Obama to congratulate him on his victory Last night I congratulated Donald Trump and offered to work with him on behalf of our country But it's been a year and a half since voting ended and Donald Trump still hasn't done the same The question now is whether other candidates will follow suit in 2022 and 2024 NPR's miles parks covers voting and joins us now Hey miles Hey Elsa Okay so how do you think Trump's refusal to concede could change the norms in future elections So looking ahead at the midterms it's turned this thing a candidate admitting they lost from something that was basically a given into a very real question mark It's important to remember here that concession is not written into law anywhere It's not required I talked about that with amel Ahmed who's a political science professor at the university of Massachusetts Amherst She said the U.S. has taken concession for granted because the country is also taken the idea of a peaceful transfer of power for granted and a concession is a big part of that Any of us study democracy it is that moment where you just hold your breath and it's this tremendous leap of faith where a loser says okay I am willing to be governed by the opposition because the alternative is worse If concessions happen less frequently she said she's worried about more political violence similar to January 6th Well have we seen this tension around concessions play out in elections we've had since Trump lost in 2020 We have Just looking back at the New Jersey governor's race last year it's a good example The vote there was pretty close and the Republican candidate Jack chiarelli waited more than a week to concede while votes were still being counted Now chiarelli was not alleging fraud or anything but his campaign attorney Mark Sheridan told me he had to work really really hard to make that clear because the atmosphere around concessions is just so unbelievably polarized right now I had no interest in becoming Rudy Giuliani standing in front of a mulch pile making crazy statements about election fraud He's referring there to Trump's campaign attorney Rudy Giuliani making baseless election claims as some people might remember in front of a landscaping company But the candidate Sheridan was representing did end up conceding but in 2022 a lot of candidates are actually running on Trump's election lies And so election officials are really worried that means those same candidates might be similarly willing to not admit they lose after they potentially probably some of them will lose in the 2022 election I talked about that with Matt Masterson who worked on election security efforts at the Department of Homeland Security through the 2020 election I think we have to assume that in some cases hopefully not many cases but the incentive structure suggests perhaps more and more cases The loser of the election will not accept will not concede So what can officials who oversee voting do to prepare for that It's tough because the behavior of candidates is one of the few things that election officials can't really game plan out right But at this point they basically have to prep information get voters prepared to fight against this disinformation The last two years has been prepared local election officials preparing as if they're going into an information battle in 2022 and 2024 and this fall will be the first real test That is Ampere's miles parks Thank you miles Thank you Passover begins at sunset tonight and at countless satyrs Jews will tell the story of the exodus of a people leaving behind everything they knew and wandering in search of a promised land For Jews who fled the war in Ukraine it's a story they are right in the middle of Deena pritchett reports The decision to leave home is not an easy one Olenna Helena was in harkey when the war started Russian plains dropped bombs right outside This song is something I can not find the word because it's like super low and super noisy and you're house is just trembling In the Passover story the Hebrew people leave Egypt with almost no notice The unleavened matzo symbolizes the fact that bread didn't even have time to rise Culina found out about a bus out of town two days before it left But still home is your Friends home is your family home is your job but everything that you can take with you is just the backpackers suitcase And you should pull it all your home in it So it's impossible and you are living everything that is just valuable for you Halena is traveling from her temporary home in Prague to spend Passover with Ukrainian Friends who've landed in Berlin And to remind her of home she keeps singing an old Ukrainian song about love and springtime and things blooming again Lost.

"We're all sorry the tonight could not yet be the celebration we wanted it to be But as I said when every vote is counted and every vote will be counted we hope to have a celebration We want every legal vote counted And you all know the way the VPN's work in the provisionals work We've got to have time to make sure that every legal vote is counted That was New Jersey governor Phil Murphy and Republican challenger Jack chiarelli agreeing on at least one thing last night and that is the need to count every vote in a race that came out much much closer than just about anyone expected We welcome now a former governor of New Jersey Christine Todd Whitman who went on after being governor to serve as administrator of the EPA under president George W. Bush and is now president of the Whitman's strategy group So governor thank you so much for being with us Let me ask you did you have any idea it might be this close No not this close We always thought it would be closer to anybody who was watching it because traditionally in this off year election cycle the Democrats are lazy They enjoy such a large plurality basically of registered voters over a million more registered voters Democrat voters and Republicans that they just seem to get lazy at it And Jack cicarelli did what he needed to do He got out that conservative base That's what he played to That's how he focused the campaign and he did a very good job And you know I also wonder at times how much effort the administration the Murphy administration had put into working with the local county chairman throughout the four years helping them raise money for their candidates things like that The grunt work that isn't managing the state but is setting yourself up for the next reelection because it's get out the vote And you know in these awful election years for Democrats particularly that is a real challenge So as you described that perhaps laziness on the part of some voters is that an explanation in part for why it's so hard to get a repeat as performance as governor particularly if you're a Democrat in your state It's been a large part of it Yes that Democrats have just gotten kind of lazy They've said well we have such a large outnumber them by such a lot that we don't really need to worry I don't have to be the one to go out and vote my neighbor will do it or somebody else And that's a really dangerous thing when you try to leave it to somebody else to do your do your work And so the turnout is not amongst the Democrats was not what film Murphy needed in order to be able to overcome a huge turnout in the Republican counties And Republican districts I mean they came out And they voted And he was not able to see that kind of turnout again minority districts in the cities and the traditionally traditional Democrat strongholds democratic strongholds excuse me We don't know yet who will ultimately be the winner at least I don't know but it's going to be very close no matter which it is What does that mean for whoever has to govern Take it from Phil Murphy's side and then inject your aside what does it mean They don't certainly don't have a mandate that doesn't appear No I mean for either one of them it means what it should mean to everybody He was elected to this kind of a position as you are governor of everybody You're not just governor of the people who voted for you And as you look at the issues that you face you have to think about it in those terms You know what does the greatest good for the greatest number of people Not what will benefit my party the most You have to put that aside and look at what you do to govern policy that's going to make a positive difference And you know for anybody who's elected to that they need to do it but particularly when you find yourself in this kind of a position where you certainly don't have an overwhelming mandate to do this to govern You've got to be very careful You've got to figure out where did it go wrong Why is it so close I mean for Phil Murphy he was bucking a trend Shall we say And the Democrats in Washington weren't helping him but he is an incumbent governor who have high approval ratings for his handling of COVID How did this go so wrong How did it mean that why couldn't he have turned out and at least without extra million number of voters of potential voters How did he stumble so badly here And for Jack chick really he has to say hey we've never since my election My election in 1993 was the first time an incumbent had either party had been defeated in the general election So why is it in the last 25 years when we've always defeated incumbent governors Why is it that I couldn't just roll in Why was it that I didn't I didn't win as big as I should have particularly when I turned out the very conservative base Is that telling me that I have to be a little bit more to the center that those people didn't come out and support me in the way that they could have or should have but for both of them I think that's a message that this is a blue state of purple state They're just finally here governor Whether you're right or left or center wherever I answer your own implicit question which is if you were taking over as governor of New Jersey what is the one thing you think that could make the lives of all people in New Jersey better Obviously addressing taxes That's a huge thing for New Jersey It's been a problem parentally And the problem here is that everyone focuses on the property tax And the problem there is that the state doesn't levy that tax and it doesn't spend it It doesn't collect it It doesn't spend it That's up to the localities Now the state can do a lot to relieve local burdens by putting more money into programs that they would have to spend money on And so that's where the state needs to step up But to say that the state can directly reduce the property tax is just not accurate And that makes life more difficult for the incumbent when they run on that as being what they what they intend to do That's why I said I was going to lower the income tax and not the property tax It's such a value of perspective Thank you so much for being with us That's former New Jersey governor Christine Todd Whitman Coming up the New York City mayoral race with Bloomberg.

"He said if taxes are your issue your Jersey's probably not your state You're kidding me right Who says that No other state has our grit in our heart And no other state has our future That was a taste of the two men who are running for New Jersey governor today Democratic incumbent Phil Murphy and his Republican challenger Jack chiarelli To take us through the race we welcome now from Princeton New Jersey Stacey Sherman She's Bloomberg deputy managing editor for U.S. bureau Stacey thanks for joining us You're in New Jersey Give us a sense of how it looks from New Jersey this race Well as of now it looks governor Murphy is ahead by about ten points and that seems to be where it's at It's a matter of I think as Larry said it's a matter of who comes out to vote Governor Murphy needs to bring the Democrats out to the polls and Jack has to actually have to bring out his Republicans and the independent voters as well So we'll see From your reporting Stacy do you have a sense of what might be motivating voters to come out I mean let me specifically ask one question There's certainly Jack here at hit hard which is taxes saying that New Jersey is relatively high tax state I think the highest in the union we are we do have the highest property taxes in the United States It's what kept Democrats from winning second terms in New Jersey since the 1970s So if governor Murphy wins the election he will be the first one since Brendan burn But he looks like he's doing well You have to really that kind of really really hasn't come out too hard You see those ads you see them everywhere the billboards And the television ads talking about taxes but there's other issues this year COVID is a really big issue and we are in a recovery And so I don't know if Jack was able to get his message across Just quickly here at the end do you think go to Murphy gets credit for the handling of COVID Am I thinking He does get credit for it There were some mistakes that he made But in general we're opening back up and people do support his restrictions that he made Okay Stacy thank you so much for joining us today That's Bloomberg says Stacy Sherman from Princeton New Jersey Coming up we bring in our political panel of contributors.
