Jack Chisenhall and Vintage Air

"Welcome cars the matter I'm Robert Ross and joining me today as Jackson Hall, President founder of the vintage air and recipient of the prestigious Robert. E Petersen lifetime. Achievement. Award. Welcome jackets. Good to have you here. Thank you Robert. Appreciate that glad to be here. You've kind of an entire industry that's really come to be known as performance air conditioning. Vintage Air was founded longtime ago now in nineteen seventy six primarily to serve builders who wanted to bill. Really Cool. Hot Rods Right. Talk about how you got to where you are I. Understand you started rich and early age well, yes. I started reading a hot rod magazine and it was hot rod magazine, an Rod and custom which were once at the time that everybody was reading. It had got me interested in old cars and I was about probably thirteen isn't it? Funny? We're in it always starts Yeah. Well thirteen years old I think so long story short my mom my dad was an air force and he was at this particular time was overseas along so she would take me out looking for old cars driving around we drove by one old junkyard that had some pretty nice cars and for Junkyard, and there was a little Mali sedan sitting right there and so. With that one and that started it really which pay fifty bucks hundred bucks for no one hundred dollars ran and drove off. There's a lot of must have been a nice car. It was decent in Iran in my mom felt that was important. So she said that'd be good one it actually Lebron's than I thought well, mode will be in their law anyway but. What did you put in that thing? Jag. Let Me Guess Flathead v Eight maybe something like that. Yeah. The first walk was a mercury by then the mercury and the flatheads kind of really on their last legs so cheap and a guy out of Mercury, my dad and military, and so I could go out to the base hobby shop at work on it therapies they have the tools and equipment wilmer stuff anyway he was out there and he was pulling that thing out and he was gonna put an old set I'm looking at that thing going he san now I gotta get rid of this thing and I'm going hey, wait a second I ask him what he'd takes Twenty. Five Bucks for so. Two fifty, five key begins Mercury, flat. It sounds like deal and boy that was the bee's knees back. Then there really was water fun car that must have been what happened after those formative years he did some college worker well. And as going along I kept working on our of data as we went along than mercury got lost and I put a pontiac over at bow the eight. Okay. Okay. And I use that to go to school I drove that car was my only car and so yeah I, I went to school studied industrial design. Guy Down College it was Vietnam era so. I joined ROTC after I got out of college I went right into the air force that was pretty ambitious endeavor especially at the time you fly planes her through for a little bit and then I did other stuff when emir force well, it sounds like an interesting stint obviously got out your passion for hot rods did not diminish in the lease no it. Always Hot Rod Guy, was there an a Ha moment that you had that said, he wait a minute I'm going to get serious about this. Well, when I got out of the Air Force, I had to make a decision. I think a lot of people that go in the air force consider staining and making a career out of thought about that for just a second and pretty much decided that I wanted to do. It always wanted to do I told my mom when I was about thirteen or fourteen. I told her not WANNA build parts for Cars I decided. Well, if I wanted to do that, this long should stick with that I started looking around. What can I do at that point? Pete shakes had started a year before that. There was a couple of chassis guys out there now and I've thought well I don't want to go jump in the middle something someone is already doing so look can I do that's new made any backup just a second I had started an air conditioning repair installation sinner right after I got out of the Service in seventy three head that stuff laying around so I thought hey, street rod nationals coming up here in August August load up the van take a bunch of stuff up there and made three unique parts to have up there for that deal were no condensers at that time in the condenser is the part that goes in front of the radiate sure that support that takes up space and. A hot rod that could be a sore thumb and of course, in those days, it was all about thirty four. It's some people would say it's still. Also, we'll get to that I designed and had a company make me condenser company up in Minnesota. Make me a condenser that was vertical so it would fit that format because there was nothing like that available number one that's right that narrow narrow grill and the yeah it had to fit just right? Yeah. There were narrow ones but they laid down the width of the cars that were going on now. That's right. So we did that and then nine designed a compressor mounting bracket for a small black Chevy because there were more sponsorship, he's going in at that time anything else. So the hoods were narrow on hot rod so it couldn't hang out sides like they did in the newer cars. So that was the second thing we did that bracket and then the third thing we did is I made a mold. been working with my hands long enough that I just figured hands I can make them all and I can make my own plastic evaporator out in. That's right and put the coralline and I'll have a unique evaporator to fit of thirty, two

Has the Pandemic Changed You?

Has the Pandemic Changed You?

"We don't really know what's going to happen with the economy with financial markets with monetary policy with the pandemic. The world is a constant series of endless surprises. Both good and bad and then as things happen that we and others don't anticipate we emotionally react to them and often overreact. Those surprises we become fearful in greedy asset bubbles conform well other acid categories. That might get too cheap. This pandemic the coronavirus pandemic has been a major shock to me and I think to most people. We certainly didn't anticipate it. And now we're coping with a dramatically different world in previous episodes. I've discussed the economic monetary and investment impact of the pandemic and its aftermath in this episode. I want to focus on how this change has impacted US personally. I see three patterns that are emerging two of which I've discussed in an earlier episode of the podcast episode one ninety seven the power of less and local these three emerging patterns are less local and leap less the principal. I've discussed a lot the same. Nicholas tile up in his book skin in the game talked about a principle called via negative. He wrote that. Knowledge grows by subtraction by identifying things. That aren't working. And removing those things he says the act of removing is powerful and less error prone then acting by addition as we've been isolated lockdown in our homes. It's given us time to think about the things that we have and do. We really need them. I'll give you a simple example this past Friday the prelude I my daughter. My daughter-in-law and my son drove three cars for seventeen hours straight through FROM PHOENIX TO IDAHO. And once we arrived here the pro. I went up to our cabinet. Open it up because we're going to spend most of the summer here in Teton Valley. We have a bit of a mice problem at this cabin. There were mice droppings everywhere. We had to clean them up. My approach to combat adding mice is to put out bait boxes with Barbie poison. I spoke to the previous owners about this. And they said they didn't have any problem with mice although they lived here full time and maybe they had a cat but my approach this time is. I took all the boxes away because for one thing when mice would come in and start eating it would wake me up and so I figured just them all out. Don't attract mice by giving them something to eat and then we'll see what happens now. This is a simple example. Simple experiment to see how it works out. But I suspect there's other things that you're doing less of gyms have been closed for most of this time. I bought a kettle bell and have been using that for strength training. So I'm canceling my gym membership. A new listener wrote me. The other day said he couldn't go to the gym so he discovered podcasting and discovered my podcast. We're travelling less. Airline travel is down ninety percent from a year ago. There was an article recently in the Wall Street. Journal talked about how air travel is going to change less direct flights slower boarding process as they board from the rear. First temperature checks before you get on the plane. Perhaps immunity passports everyone wearing mask not going to be as much fun to travel by. Plane Anymore. What are you doing less of are considering doing less of perhaps less going out less business less travel most people are doing less their subtracting things from their lives and it can be powerful. We can give us a sense of relief when we remove something from our life. Now it means we need to be strategic when we add something. We can't just extract ourselves from the economy but we can be strategic in our purchases which brings us to the second emerging pattern of local. Many many people have started working remotely and have loved it. I've had two friends that mentioned to me recently that they never want to have to go back to the office again. One of the outstanding questions is how permanent will this be? And the potential impact on commercial real estate commercial real estate prices were down ten percent year over year in April. We've seen this tram go back and forth. There was a phase where remote work was very much in fashion. And then the CEO's wanted to bring the workers back so they could all collaborate. So I don't see all companies doing this but I certainly do believe you'll see much more remote work because you can be more productive. I have worked remotely for almost twenty years now and you can be highly productive. Other aspects of local supply. Chains have been severely disrupted by this pandemic companies realized that maybe such an extensive global supply chain has some weaknesses. Will we see more? Local domestic manufacturing you're seeing modes of transportation be more local. New York Times reported in March nationwide sales of bicycles equipment and repair services almost doubled from the past year. A lot of people don't want to commute on the subway anymore or the buses and so they want to commute by bicycle. See how that goes when winter comes. These are local trans. The pro and I are going to do much more local travel. We are purchasing a camper conversion. This is a two thousand. Chevy suburban converted into a camper with solar panels. Abedin back no kitchen. But we'll be doing a lot more distributed camping on bureau of Land Management and National Forest Land in Idaho Wyoming and Montana more local with bet your local pattern for shopping. How has that changed? We've done a lot more curbside. Pickup of groceries takes more planning. It can be a little more frustrating. We busted on instant card that can be frustrating to the other day at the grocery store. We ordered two pounds of bananas and two Carrots and we got two bananas and two pounds of Carrots with institute. We Wanted Rama noodles. They didn't have any says. They substituted two huge bags of cheese and CARAMEL. Popcorn mixed together. How you interact locally with WHO? This is one of the biggest changes that I see. We can't be locked down in our homes forever. We're going to have choose to interact. If you have kids they want to interact and so deciding how. And what type of social distancing any social distancing will you use will be critical? We're going to have to kind of navigate this new culture until there's a vaccine if we get a vaccine. I was somewhat surprised as we drove those many miles from Phoenix to Idaho. How FEW PEOPLE? We saw wearing masks and how many people we saw gathering together strangers at restaurants or stores. It's almost as if people think government says the economy's open so we're back Enormou- now maybe the pandemic will just go away. But that doesn't appear to be with. The science suggests the infection rate was very high before the economic shutdown and now the curve has been flattened but everything. I've seen suggests the coronavirus has not gone away bowl. See and we have to figure out how are we going to navigate our social interactions locally

I mean we just finally got tradition in the top five caught. Peace that Louis New Banner and We tried to fix that and get that off the car we had a control. Tyre and all the way back to twenty three. Start of the day add. Add to come to the front again or try to Best we got with seven so tyler junior. Now we're talking during the race about your line you and how you just mentioned it. Run highlight and wanted to a lot of people. Run the high line in the middle of the. You're running it on the exit until you actually use a lot of racetrack up kind of no man's land if if you got two or three inches too far out you're gonNA hit the wall. How are you so confident to run up there at such a young age? Well Great Valentine's in the simulator? We tire out of the tires. It Brad Miller of it actually didn't slow the car down that much and it actually felt really really good. I was really surprised that even worked in the simulator and obviously we all know de Hamlin makes a credible amount of time even more inexpensive expanding cars than than a cup car but with today star fall off that we saw that line came into play really early and I was almost scared like what Danny likes joke about is. I don't want to use it too much and show my hand but it was so Dang fast at times that it was it was it was hard not to run in it but we definitely for sure about halfway through the race made a few wrong adjustments and it allowed everybody else to catch up to us but I mean I got braces Darlington race. That long it's going to change more than I've ever experienced there an xfinity car so that was. It was definitely a challenge today.

"Johnny. How's IT GOING BUDDY? Good man how're you doing Chris? Good Buddy thanks for joining me on talking Mo- pars. You are a frequent story contributor and I appreciate that a lot and I kind of wanted to get a little bit deeper into your history with moe par. You know I'm always curious to hear people's stories but one aspect of the stories that I really enjoy hearing is how people got started with Moat Parts. So why don't you take us back to the beginning and tell us how you're Mo- par journey started? Well Man I would have to say it was just sort of around me. You know. I didn't really seek it out. It was sort of their my mom's cars her that I grew up in a seventy two charger which I still have to this day. I'm working on trying to get back together for her Back in eighty two my dad well back way up My Dad had a sixty nine or sixty eight dodge charger. Forty four spe- Dana bitching car back. When I was a kid He blew up the motor. It sat when we moved to southern California from northern California. He sold the car off and then we lived with my grandfather for about a year while they saved money to buy their own house and then he went out searching for another charger so he found a sixty eight dodge charger. Which is the Blue Half Today? So in eighty two so as a kid. I grew up on the dukes of Hazzard so That was a huge contributor to. I would say chargers. At least you know Back then it wasn't really like Mo par just I love chargers chargers were my thing and I I got bit by that bug and then I'd say in high school I just happen to have a really close buddy. I mean a friend that I made that was also into Mo- PARSE. His Dad had runners and so he kinda grew up as a plymouth guy and I kind of grew up as a dodge guy. And then that kind of just solidified. The whole Mo- part thing I think from that point on it Kinda spread into other Mo- party now where it was just a Mo part thing but very so your fam- your family were more people or is that just kind of happenstance. I think it was happenstance. I think you know my grandfather had an old dodge pickup Swept LINE LIKE A. I think it was a sixty two three or four something like that. He had a seventy two dodge and it was just. He wasn't necessarily like a hardcore dodge guy or anything just had it. You know My Dad was kind in everything. And even today. He's kind of an everything guy. He's he's more of The old school hot water like loves old Ford Body styles with you know Chevy. V8's 'em but when he got that charger the first one it was He was working at a mechanic shop. He's he was a mechanic by trade and a customer came out from Texas and I guess he blew He. He blew the transmission or blue. The motor or something. Something went wrong with the car. Car was a couple years old or so is financed and the guy just abandoned. The car and my dad worked on fixing it at this shop and the bank. He talked to the bank about buying the car so he ended up buying the car From the bank while this other guy just like abandoned it basically so and I think that sort of solidified for him as far as that's a bad ass car and then why he went out to go buy another one to replace it years later Mary cool so it sounds to me like you've actually kept some of these heirloom cars in the family. Was that like. I'm never getting rid of these cars. These cars are staying around or is it just that it you know. Maybe they're in the project or what Well like my dad's car is definitely needing some love I'm probably not gonNA restored anytime soon. It's not bad enough to restore it. It's definitely rough but I kinda WANNA leave at a ratty muscle car and get it together. My Mom's car had painted and you know putting it together Nice. It's not going to be like some. You know show cards just going to be a nice driver basically But Yeah I'll never sell those. You know a lot of my friends my close friends know I have this I call it the the ring system so I might go through this eventually. Or there's probably guys that have gone through this. You go through these stages where you have so much stuff and you start to think to yourself I need. I have too much. I gotta let go. I'll never finish these. I don't have time for him. Or whatever right and if you're like me and you know you got a lot of cars I know there's a lot of Mo- par guys that have tons of them maybe ten or maybe it's a hundred right so you decide. I gotta get rid of some. What do you do? It's kind of overwhelming. So my ring system. Is You have the cars at the core in the that. You will never get rid of like you. Just put those cars into that area and you don't wrap your head around those because it'll just never happen you know and then you start plotting the cars out to the outer rings till you get to the point where your least loved cars on the most outer ring and you just wrap your head around that one car. Can I get this cargo? Do I WANNA get rid of? It doesn't make sense and then you know. Let the cargo or you decide you. Don't WanNa let it go in he. If you can't let that cargo you know every other car on the inside of that ring is not going to get gone either. You know so. Yeah those cars are at my core. Have my high school car. My Dad's charger. My Mom's charger at sixty coronet. Just been around too long to you. Know it's been through too much with me that I'll probably never get rid of that. One either

Orchid expert Dr Manos Kanellos answers a Dendrobium question

"It's time for question of the week and this one comes from Gaskin who has an issue with dendrobium orchid skin rights. I got it a couple of years ago and it's been a joy flowering profusely for the first eighteen months. He's also doubled in size when it arrived it had a few stumps which made me think you'd have been divided or cutback with my kids. I know to Prune flowering stems back to the next node after flowering wanted. My danger need something similar and should I be dividing those rooting branche. Let's at the base. I am no dendrobium experts so I called on somebody who is to answer this question. Manosque ANALYSIS IS THE CO author of book growing orchids at home along with another orchid expert. Peter White so he was just the person meads speak to thankfully Manas was on hand to answer all Gaskins dendrobium queries. And then some are GonNa see three questions here. The basically the dribble what we're looking at is the drug of nobility which is native to Southeast East Asia and it is often referred as a cool growing in boom which is not doesn't do doctors in that it doesn't really need cool temperatures. But it's kind of spacey kind of special because it is one of the few calm only sold or kids that has a distinct growing unrest phase. It's going phase starts when you see buds on the gains in the rest phase stotts when the new gains have reached almost the height of the old canes their best boat late spring about. Now it's arrest and growing phase coincides with them with the nobody with a here now so I can see city questions that need to be honest from from paragraph. So the first question is what these stumps these dumps. In fact cut of games. The plant didn't need a one that say these case cut off but grow did cut them off so the blunt looks prettier for somebody to bite. Which these second question do you need to cut off the gains of the end of the Florence. No because they are used as reservoirs for nutrients and would that feed the new cades when the plan does need these old gains it will become crinkly yellow and then you can cut them off. It's not like offices which is unique in that. It Kennedy Flower on the same stem. These a flower. Normally it would just stop a move to the new gains but as they do not got the old game. I think this is where I've fallen down with this plant in the past because I in my ignorance of this plot have have cut off those stems before they sent me before they've gone completely yellow and Brinkley and as a result I've I was doing the right thing but obviously I wasn't and you end up with kind of an unbalanced ugly looking plan as well grow can do this because in the nursery does that. He's doing just before shows blunt. But he's doing it because in in your house you have perfect. Conditions was at home. The blood is not in ideal conditions. Most of the time so taking away it's Bui- Wa Shales nutrients in what is it. Makes it much more difficult for it to show? Its best left of left on the left with the plan until the plan tells you does need. I'm I guess this is. Why if you grow a few follow ups all kids you have to understand that the dendrobium Zarb different because that flowering style is quite different. They don't fly off from the same in the same way. Do they? Sort of flying from the side of the stag with a very short flowering stem as opposed to that long one get. We found offices years. There is different than two or three ways from other orchids. And as soon as you realize that most of the darkest got two or three significant but as if you only differences than the very to grow one is you know one or two key things. The key for this one is an interest and a glowing period joining address. You keep it cool in cool bright dry conditions Jewish growing face you know what orchid the key to eight was you do this L. Thrive. It's not difficult to grow at home now. The third question w dividing the Bronx leads at the bottom and a difficult one to answer. It's basically that says yes. No these orchid if it's not given a proper rest videoed develop not bronze. Let's they're called chi-chi's new plantlets on the canes if it does so these are best sprayed with some water will. Miss missed it and win the have enough road full five a couple of inches in length either be snapped off and then all put together in small report and you have a new plan but on this case in this picture this is not. Lebron's lead it doesn't look like a is. It just looked looks like a new cane. Orchid looks that it could do with reporting and now it is that I tend to report it all the way until the end of June. So it is best reported in a weaponry party is good to take a little bit of also dog from the bottom of the boat and boot the audit into its new book which should be only slightly bigger a little bit deeper. These huge go into into the bar. So if you really really wanted you cool take that bit off. But it's risky and you have to ask why the best thing is to be less with planned so you end up with a big stronger thriving blunt and what is the best mix to use with the dendrobium is it just like kind. Classic orchid bog just simply bought a don't balk based or anything called compost. You Know Eh isn't a very and you do. Not because they have long games a lot of people feel they need to put him in a big. But the problem with this is that it's not easy to keep it on the very dry Jimmy. It's rest period. So if need be for weight you could put a couple of Februaries in the but the best to just every time you just slightly at the best the next size up in terms of thought so the nets sized book on. I know that I say it. It looks a little bit too big for its board. But that's what it needs to do to do and say just balk which will enable enabled the grower to keep it on the on the dry side during rest field watering these kids. I mean is there any special requirements? Here judy is growing face You what you keep it moist but not overly wet. You can use hardwood that it's easy but it's good at least from time to time to use a rainwater always luke warm temperatures and it was. The new. Gains was the end of the season growing cheese on Wednesday new case of the the height. Alsi availed gains than you. Keep it on the dry side very little water from time to time with Chevy Mistake. So doesn't get bone dry and deal. You see a new buds appearing on the new gains. The new gains also good to be stoked will be supported otherwise can just fold over all or the garden grow. Not Straight okay. That makes sense. Well that's helped me. Also because I've I've got a couple of little Katie's or might dendrobium which I have. I have to say already removed without really checking what I was supposedly but removed them and they were glass of water in the minutes. Must pop those up there quite small but they have got decent read some them so they can just go into one newport with market bark and hopefully they'll go next year with the oxy skype is is you can just snap them off the gain of the boom rather than a cover to cut off a little bit of this time as you have to do with the with the front office and then. Yes dorothy three together with them on on a very small against the Mita in Bach and and not too much watering at the START STUCCO FLEETS. And then you'll have a and what about this worry that people have the they're all kids in see through. Pulse is not true because I can't seem to come from the nursery and report to. We need to look for seats. Report Oral Paik once. Okay very good question. A book is good because you see the system village focusing the size especially Clear all else equal is a good thing. I clear poured for not only for August for plotted plants as well because I can see the roots but it is not necessary to grow or what is essential in a boat. The guarding orchids is that it has good. Greenwich has blend your host closer to drain or kids especially for an obvious need to drain and dry well. Between what the other thing. Also which is the secret is easy. Key is don't even have a dome even clear participation it the Dome it is definitely made for orchids because no The plan needs that kind of special boot so there are clear thoughts in the market. Which frankly not really good for you. Because they don't have good Greenwich as long as the pot has very good grant. A lot of big holes at the bottom is good for orchids. The all clear is better because you also she system in the roots This House is when you say talk about the Dome is the Boston. Part isn't flat. It's got a raise section which presumably is increasing surface area for more act coming in the menu holes at the bottom of the foot. Give it good drellich than dome is mostly for Asia. The center of the if you think about it is basically a niche may be a neat and a half from the what whereas in innumerable port. It's still possible to have inches away from

The Mopar Hunter's Top 5 Of The Week

"What Mope aren't suzy. We are back again for another fun filled episode of talking Mo- Pars and I've got some good news my project. Art is finally getting an engine. Unfortunately it's not the fifty one that I had hoped for because that engine is still at the machine shop dead in the water for monetary reasons. But I'm so anxious to get behind the wheel of this dart that I've actually decided to hold off on the big box walk for now. I have most of the small block parts. Still with the exception of the engine and transmission. So I actually had a buddy reach out to me about the seventy one charger. I was looking at saying that he had a three eighteen and nine hundred four that he was just looking to give away so he generously donated that engine and transmission to the new cars. And the new. 'cause IS TO DART on the road before I go out acquiring any other projects I gotta get the ones. I have on the road with that being said. I've got a project right now with this little three eighteen and I'm just trying to dress it up a little bit and give it a little bit more go crazy. I just want to make it a little bit fun okay. The engine project that I have now is called project free eighteen because it is a three eighteen and free. So that's what I'm up to. I'm just gathering parts trying to find good deals and it's funny because I posted this cheesy ad was a wanted poster. Ernest said basically wanted small block. Par- parts you know. Cheap is good and free great and there was one guy who's like. Oh better. Get a small block Chevy. Nothing in the Mo- par world is cheap. But here's the thing he's wrong because I've gotten plenty of cool stuff for free or next to free or really cheap. Just based on the fact that I'm a nice guy and I guess I've been fortunate that I've ran into such cool people in the mobile world and unfortunately for that guy. Apparently he's run into a bunch of jerks that are just out for money which you know there are a lot of people like that and the Mo- park immunity unfortunately but you know thankfully I haven't run into any of them. I've ran into some really cool people and they've given me some really good deals so I'm not complaining on that front and I'm still getting the deals I just acquired an intake and a carb and I've got some really cool vintage valve covers and I'm just having fun with this car now. I've got everything I need to throw together and have a ratty little small blocked art and that's all I want. The shiniest parts on the start are going to be the wheels and tires because I have brand new bef. Gta's and Krieger SS for it. So you know it is what it is. I'm GonNa have fun with it and hopefully you guys will be along for the ride. I'm going to try to get some of that content up on Youtube here sooner rather than later so you guys can follow along on a little bit more of a visual level. So that's what I'm up to now. Let's get this show on the road. Like I said in the introduction folks we've got to listeners stories and I'm GonNa Sandwich our segment called high performance parts in between both stories justice which things so our first listener story comes from Shane. Taylor here. Is Shane Story? Hey Chris my dad has always had cool cars and trucks for much of my life. He's made a living off of hunting down deals and then flipping them. I'm now in my late twenties own a house and financially stable as a congratulations or as my dad says early inheritance. He said I could have any one of my choosing. I had the choice between fully restored. Nineteen seventy-nine Camaro RS s with a pretty radical three eighty three stroke or a fully restored Purple Nineteen fifty-six Plymouth Savoie or a dusty old red and black nineteen fifty five Plymouth Belvedere that didn't run and was missing the rear window which is apparently traded for a brick that sat in the backseat. I took the fifty six savoie because it was in the best condition and would need the least amount of work. It was perfect. Because I don't know a ton about working on cars but I love detailing although this is probably the most valuable car. It had a few drawbacks. The car was restored in the nineties and was overdue for another restoration in the near future. The interior was badly stain and fading. The paint was getting rest bubbles and there was a lot of custom work done that was very obviously trendy a couple decades ago but not anymore the worst part though it had a three fifty small block. Chevy. Don't get me wrong. My family was GM all the way. Unless there was a MO- part deal to be found. My Dad even warned me that when I took it I couldn't hang out with the Mo guys or else I'd be chastised. He said apart by the fifties chevrolets at shows and don't talk about the car more than need be after all. The car had no signs of make other than the aluminum. Plymouth play under the door when open so most people thought it was a chop fifty seven Chevy. Once I got it I started doing research on the forward. Look Mo- parts and I fell in love the more I looked at him. The more disappointed became with fifty six mash up with Chevy engine. Ford Rerun Nineteen Ninety. Eight Ford Escort Royal Plum. Paint which looked great. But I just can't stand forwards and Tacky customisations. I found myself eyeing the faded beaten up Belvedere that my dad had sitting in a shop. It had one around the title and had gone to his surviving kin. It was easily ninety percent original so I started drooling after I to educate myself on these classics after a week of having the Purple Plymouth. I called Dad and told him I made a mistake. I detailed the Savoie and send it back to him. Any happily gave me the bus at fifty five after all he had been offered up to ten thousand four and only paid fourteen hundred for the non running Belvedere. Although it wasn't a smart financial decision was the right thing to do and I couldn't be happier. We really to a local shop that specializes in classic. Mo- parts have the clutch rebuilt as well as some brake work done. Once I got a new six volt battery hooked up. It started and ran great. Save for some smoke. Every light on the car worked perfectly and the more I looked around through the scattered parts in the interior and trump the more original parts. I found for it now. There runs in drives learning and working on finding parts for these is a very expensive scavenger hunt. But it's fun to work on such a neat piece of history even though I live two hours from my dad. It's brought us closer together because I'm always sending in pictures of things. I've probably messed up and calling him for help. I look forward to restoring beauty overtime. The Right Way and going to car shows with him even if we can't park next to each other Shane. Thanks for sending in your story I've been wanting to do some forward look content and your story kind of inspired me to get Looking into what I want to cover an hi Wanna go about doing it. I actually have a guest lined up. That is pretty deep in the forward look community. But I haven't really scheduled him in yet so I gotta get a hold of him and figure out when we can get him on the show. Because like I said and like I've been saying this show is for all aren't disease that includes a forward look the modern era everything in between and I'm GONNA stick to my word. We will cover the antique stuff like the really really old stuff. We're going to cover the forward. Look we're going to cover it all or at least we're gonNA give it our best shot so look forward to that very cool story. I'm glad that you chose at least a MO- par over the Chevy. That makes you a lot cooler in my book and let me just say this. A car enthusiasts first and foremost but I am a Mo- par guy so I respect all cool cars but there's just something about Mo- parts that gets me going so when I take shots at Ford and Chevy guys you know nothing personal. It's all in good fun. Okay now back to Shane Story. It's good to hear that you're getting into Mo- pars and cars in general it's something fun to learn and you sound like you're really motivated to gear project on so that's really cool in. Hey a fifty. Five Belvedere is pretty cool in my book. So keep me posted on your project. Buddy thanks for sending in your story I really WanNa see pictures of this car and see how far you belong. Maybe you can call in and give me some tips to pass along the people because I get people asking me about forward look cars and where to find parts and all this and a lot of stuff you know. I try my best but I don't own a forward look cars. I'm not too deep in that world and I know there's people out there that own those cars and start finding really good resources and stuff so anybody out there actually not just. Shane knows any good places to go forward. Look stuff let me know if you know someone. That's really deep in the forward. Look each that's one aspect of mope our history that I admittedly don't know very much about but I love those cars. I think are really cool and I'll take. I'll take anything in the forward look era over fifty seven Chevy any day but that's me and that's not to say the fifty seven chevies aren't cool but hey forward look parts or cooler. Proven wrong Shane once again. Thank you for sending in your

Why Do Cars Have Alarms If We Ignore Them?

"Mark lives in Chicago and loved his nineteen ninety nine. Honda Civic hatchback. Thieves loved it too apparently late nineties. Civic is worth far more than its blue book value in parts alone. Multiple people have pulled up next to him at stop lights and offered to buy a hatchback on the spot. Maybe should've taken them up on the offer. The first time his civic was stolen the cops quickly recovered it a few blocks away. The second time mark wasn't so lucky. He went out to search for the car himself and founded about a mile from his apartment under an overpass stripped of its engine and missing the entire front paneling. Now mark takes the train mark. Civic didn't have a car alarm because like most of us he assumed that alarm where waste of money if you live in a big city falsely triggered car alarms ours communist pigeons and just as annoying blaring car alarm in. Chicago barely raises an eyebrow. There's even a name for it alarm fatigue but does our collective disdain for car. Alarms mean that they aren't effective. We spoke with Christmas. Goey security consultant of thirty three years and host of the podcast crime school. He admits that we all have alarm fatigue to some degree but thinks that alarms still have their place. He said car thieves will tell you. They don't like the noise. They don't like the attention that it draws but it depends on the quality of the car thief. If it's just an amateur car thief the alarm goes off. They're gone to that extent. They work professional car thieves on the other hand. Don't even worry about alarms. Mcgowan says the pros can either disable the alarm quickly or use a number of tactics including dummies keys and tow trucks to circumvent the alarm system altogether. According to Interpol the international law enforcement organization car-thefts worldwide can be divided into two distinct categories widely available older cars. That's quantity and higher end and luxury cars. That's quality marks ninety nine civic fits squarely in the quantity category the type of car. That's irresistible to young street level car. Thieves parts for older widely available. Cars are in high demand plus most cars built before the year. Two thousand can still be hot wired. Mcgaughey said the old cars are a piece of cake. Modern cars all the keys have a chip built into them. That chip has to be married up to the ignition. You can't go in there and break off the steering wheel column like you would in the old days. The CAR WON'T START IF LOW LEVEL CAR. Thieves are more likely to be spooked by car alarms. Then it's worth figuring out if your car is attractive to low level car thieves. I check if your car is one of the ten most stolen in America. That's a sure. Sign your quantity category according to low Jacks Two thousand sixteen vehicle theft recovery report. The most stolen makes models are behind a civic and accord Toyota Camry and Corolla the Chevy Tahoe and Silverado the Nissan Ultima Cadillac Escalade Ford F to fifty and the ACURA INTEGRA. Again older model years are the easiest to swipe and have the highest demand for parts. Mugabe's rule of thumb is quote. Look at the most popular cars today. They'll be the most stolen cars in the country ten years from now another hugely important factor is where you live according to statistics from the FBI and the National Insurance Crime Bureau. Big cities routinely have the highest total number of car thefts. But that's because there are lots of cars in big cities a more useful. Statistic is car thefts per capita in that category. California is king. California is home to eight of the ten metropolitan areas with the most cars stolen per person in Twenty fifteen Los Angeles held the title for the most car stolen nationwide fifty two thousand five hundred fifty nine but these smaller central valley cities of Modesto Bakersfield and Salinas had far greater rates per capita. Another perhaps expected capital of car. Theft is Albuquerque New Mexico number two in the country for stolen cars per resident. There might be a simple explanation for this geographical clustering of theft rates. According to a twenty twelve reports from the Department of Justice. One third of all cars stolen in the US were stolen from four states. California Arizona New Mexico and Texas. That's because there's a lucrative trade in stolen cars and parts directly into Mexico. Although the smuggling rings are operated by large criminal organizations the report concluded that the cars themselves are mostly stolen by juveniles. So if you drive a popular car that's more than decade old and you live within a few hours drive of the border. It's probably worth investing in a highly visible alarm system. The flashy decals alone might be enough to deter thief scanning the aisles in the mall parking lot but if a car alarm does go off near you you shouldn't go investigate unless you're Blah enforcement or security personnel. It's their job to investigate. Alarms not bystanders.

Mike Bloomberg's campaign is polluting the internet

"Taylor Laurenz Tech reporter at the New York Times. You are one of the most online people I know and lately I've been going online and seeing a lot of one person and that person is Mike Bloomberg. I've been seeing him in my twitter timeline. I'm seeing him on my instagram feed. I don't follow Mike Bloomberg. What is going on here? Why is he all over social media? Right now yeah well you know. After entering the presidential race. He's really tried to make a splash for himself In the media so he's been obviously buying lots of television ads also buying lots of ads across the Internet and that doesn't just mean banner ads Oliver Websites but also sponsored content on a lot of our favorite. You know mean pages and influence our accounts. And he's been essentially paying these people post memes and messages viral videos on his behalf. I am curious about instagram part. Especially because I feel like that has been the most visible controversial element of this Bloomberg add by. What do those look like? Can you tell us a little bit about the Bloomberg memes on Instagram? Yeah Aso the sort of medium campaign that dropped across a lot of the biggest accounts like Fuck Jerry Moist Buddha tank Sinatra. These are names. You may or may not be familiar with but they have millions of followers on Instagram. And what they did is postponed essentially fake looking. Em's between themselves and Bloomberg where Bloomberg would say funny kind of relatable things like I have a billion dollars. Can you make me look cool? And then the members of pretend to respond through this fake. Dm Like yes. Or No. Or I'll think about it. All of the posts had the caption. You know sponsored content but even so you know people. People like thought that they were fake. Yeah some people's keep damning me like are these real. Yeah it's like it is really fake looking especially because of what he saying right like I have a billion dollars. There was the one about like having a car with Lamborghini doors a level of self awareness and irony that I don't think the real Bloomberg has ever displayed. Yeah exactly very self aware and very much like playing into how he's uncool you know boomer And what about twitter? So he's definitely also making a big splash on twitter. What's his twitter presence like? He's just been posting on it in this very during just away He's been calling people out he's been doing the whole brand twitter thing where you like quote tweets and dunk on them. He's been doing that to donald trump attempting to kind of clap back. But you know they also posted this what people were calling a doctored video this video. That was kind of remixed from the debates to make it look like Bloomberg. Were saying you know. Has anyone else started like a business? I'm the only one Chevy started a business. Is that fair and know? Attempted to make it look like all. The other candidates just sat there in silence. They played crickets in the background in reality. That's not what happened the debate at all and it's actually kind of a funny video which is slightly disturbing. Mary Internet very video. It's very like I mean people make those things about trump all the time But I think to see it as sort of like sponsored content. That video also went out across a bunch of Munich counts so to see these. We Macau's that are being paid to essentially distribute. This highly edited video. That a lot of people won't know is edited Is Yeah I. I can see why that would really concerned people. Yeah right like seeing Bloomberg. Come off really well in this debate. That people in the no no he did very badly in. It's an effective tactic here but completely skewed from reality. Yeah and it's also I mean it's blatant misinformation. And when you think about you know what a Lotta people on the left have criticized trump for You Know Bloomberg is essentially leaning into sort of some of the worst aspects of that So I understand the criticism I think on Bloomberg side you know. He's essentially leveraging a lot of marketing tactics that have been used for a long time in the corporate world These types of viral sons videos. You know very active twitter presence paired with influence or marketing on instagram. I mean this is just like marketing one. Oh one for a lot of corporate brands But it is. It's just kind of jarring to see it leak into the political realm. And who are the People? Who are actually behind these memes on instagram and twitter. Who are the ones that are creating this content for the Bloomberg campaign? I'm so essentially. It's you know people from a couple of different groups One is Jerry media who most famously runs the account fuck Jerry Their CEO and one of their creative directors is involved with the campaign. It's also a bunch of people from brand fire which is another kind of influencer marketing collective and doing things media which is a media company that owns a lot of other big large accounts like middle-class fancy white people. Comes things out so those Mimi counts really appeal to the millennial vote And then in terms of like you know his actual team. He staffed his digital team with a ton of people from the tech industry themselves so people that are intimately familiar with these platforms hiring from places like facebook and Snapchat. So you know. On all sides he really has the best of the best in terms of digital talent Also because he can afford to pay them an exorbitant amount of money and he's promised them jobs through November no matter what the outcome of his campaign which no other political campaign could ever do that. So I think that's also why he's managed to attract some of these people. He was also just working with average people to essentially do digital what he called digital canvassing. I think other people would have other names for it where he's basically paying people twenty four twenty five hundred dollars a month To like text all of their friends about him and Post about him on their personal social media accounts so he's kind of engaging in a lot of tactics With a lot of sort of cross sections of different people. So what is the ultimate goal here with the Bloomberg campaign in hiring these younger folks to pass around memes and working with you know the tanks tra- people and other big influencers mean the goal with all of this is just generate attention online? It's to make a splash Bloomberg has entered the race late. He's not even on the ballot yet you know. He just participated his first debate recently. So he's just trying to get in people's heads you know. He's trying to establish himself as a front runner and viable candidate And the best way to do that is to get people talking and I think that that you know. He's very successfully done that It's it's also like he doesn't have to play by traditional rules. He has so much money that he can kind of do whatever he wants and so. I think that's also why you see him. Embracing really bold strategies that frankly other political candidates would probably shy away from because they don't have the resources to necessarily see it through in the way. Bloomberg can we're when we can just dump tons of money see if something works doesn't work dump tons of money elsewhere So he doesn't have to be quite as strategic. I think you know some of the other campaigns and I mean talking about dumping tons of money and whether or not it works. What's the response been to these mutants. Yeah the response has been positive. Negative Obviously there has been a huge amount of people online. Who think it's Hilarious and funny and love it? Um and then you have the other people who think it's you know the death of democracy so it doesn't really matter it doesn't really matter what people think the point is is that people are talking about him that you know. He's he's being talked about as a viable candidate. That's the only thing that matters so in that way it

White House or Fight House? Tevi Troy’s new book looks at tiffs and turf wars among White House staffers

"With us and we're gonna talk about that you know the fussing and fighting vet says going on in the White House and don't think for a second that that's exclusive to Donald trump's administration you know it's kind of interesting anytime it's its whatever you're closest to write in history and other things they have to be the worst you know and so Donald Trump his administration's wise it just has to be the worst all the fussing and fighting in in fighting that's going on like no other president before well before you really jump that shark and think that that is the case then you start believing you're hyperbole I once you get your hands on this new book called White House from doctor Tevye Troy bestselling author and former White House adviser okay he's been on the inside he's known as and researched and studied this and he's right about now with his book White House rivalries in the White House from Truman J. trump Dr Troy welcome to the show good to have you with us thanks bill Bradley on talk about played out hello this is this is it this is exciting you know that you know to put this out because you know this conversation has come up from time to time and you always hear from you know the hyperbolic that downhole trump is the worst ever and then you you start bringing back some of the the stories and histories and now here it is you've documented it I imagine if you wanted to go back even before Truman we we have to do episodes inch you know volumes of all the fussing happening in the White House right no absolutely and and we know that they were fighting before experiment where we are perfect I mean you look at the administration of Washington and Hamilton and Jefferson murder each other's throats but the difference is they were cabinet members and when I try to get that in my house how the dynamic change once we had the creation of a White House staff there was no real White House staff before Roosevelt and Truman the first person to enter the White House staff and make change the dynamic in that certainly you have the people who are close to the president meaning in the same building advising him on foreign policy and economic policy and then you might have a treasury secretary or spectators biggest ticked off that somebody else is inviting in his area that was one thing that changed in that that meant that I wasn't quite interesting to note that that the dynamic in the entrance of more humanity just because the more issues right yeah look and government was growing mistake became higher and then also you have this right the best celebrity White House aide the whole idea of a White House staff was supposed to be people with a passion for anonymity but that went away pretty quickly especially in the Kennedy administration when he hired people who are already famous like orcas lessons or to work in the White House is suddenly how celebrity White House they had its own reputation has long ties to the craft and they they could get their word out there if the policies were not going their way and to suddenly you have this idea of leaks and counter leaks you can make you look good in the press and that also at the White House right now make that I talk about the book in the course that is continued and become almost like a to the degree of a tender green black belt when you talk about all this and leaking and stuff going on you know but bad enough that it happens in DC but now of course with the most recent refill we understand that even ambassadors in our state department is running rampant with it as well yeah well you talk about ten degree black belt and that that was Henry Kissinger I'll tell you one great story that's been quite how's that Kissinger was dating Jill St John a very attractive bond girl actress Mandy comes out in the papers that Kissinger's dating this woman and Kissinger ghost and extending complains that his rival Christy William Rogers leaked the information about your retaining but the truth is that your lease it because a he wanted everyone to know he was dating that the truck the bond girl would be he wanted to hurt Rogers any internal wars and bribery deposit so what happened what was it what was the conclusion that well well written exam would rail about all the leaking that happened at the state department and constant complained about it but just not your fat it but at least some of the time we know the kiss your will the guy doing the leaking and then blaming the state department and of course everybody knows because your date of birth second longer up there with a win win corrective measure like you would can degrade black belt in Plato's exactly so he gets the he gets the reward and the award let's talk about president Truman we touched a little bit on that I mean he he he was I guess the modern era of the expanding the staff and and really kind of bringing this into play and of course it's just been kind of kind of a a monolith that like the blob is just been growing unto itself right yes Sir but instrument you have the right there were just unbelievable I don't I'm a presidential historian I've been putting this stuff for decades and the story behind in spite house were were things I'd never even heard of and one breaks during the ministration is that the secretary of state George Marshall as opposed to the recognition of the state of Israel which is flabbergasting to update the business interest on July especially right there at that critical time because it was true and that led the battle for inferred knowledge meant of Israel that would that would be very fight with marshals on the wrong side of it Clark Clifford a junior White House beat it on the right side of it make an argument in front of Clifford Clifford and Truman and Marshall are all arguing out in the White House Clifford wins the argument Truman recognized Israel Marshall is still mad that he never again the clippers or mentions his name for the rest of life right yeah right because so it's pretty petty but yeah such as such as you can't be the government the illusion of the Kennedy Camelot regime you said was not devoid of conflict as well of course in Kennedy do you have this notion of Camelot music wonderful people sitting around a table can you never even heard the term Camelot elections administration that comes from our interview that took place after the administration after he was dead yes but even in the administration there was fighting taking place especially between Lyndon Johnson and Robert F. Kennedy canteen was the product any would be turned general and the president brother Lynn Johnson vice president that you hated each other going back to their time in the Senate together when we can't even the lowly staffer and Johnson with the Senate Majority Leader and they had these nasty nicknames for him brought Robert if they reported Johnson is ruthless corded phone and get a canny referred to by Johnson as bunny boy really didn't like each other and they're always trying well anyway and we've known that that that tension what is it was pretty extreme there between them what else within the Kennedy at Camelot compound anything else that you discovered yeah there was a a a a rivalry between artists less intervention before they collect their prize winning historian who came to the White House when the first intellectual ever worked in the White House and then there was Ted Sorensen it was not as well known but he was closer to Kennedy and there was tension between them that continued even after the administration because the two of them we're kind of bracing to get their books out first hand stories then asked her to stop and stop writing his books but it's different in different book out first plus you're obviously would not agree and there were and the race was on and it it colored their relationship there's tension between them that went on for a long time and I got to imagine especially after the assassination these rivalries it would increase all the more would they not yeah and if there is one great story that dean Rusk with the sector state did not like that Slazenger called him brutalized in silence in meetings during the Kennedy administration implying that he wouldn't say anything that's a rough put it out there the only reason he was silent in meetings this lessons are within the facilities are respected leaker and we would talk about everything that he heard needing three wins Mr this is this is great fun Dr Chevy try I'd say it's good fun because you know the politics is just right for comedy it's it's when we take it too seriously like at times we're doing right now in this current environment then we deprive ourselves of of the little bit of humor in thank you Dr drive for presenting

"Honest it's juicy scoop he's a pompous hassle yeah the now now so so i mean as i say his name became shorthand for all right chevy chase oh yeah he's an ass right so chevy's doing the khokhlov rob and the thing that made this particularly interesting was that everybody in the room who knew michael knew that michael hated chevy and really really disturbed him that chevy had become a star because chevy was originally just going to be a writer yeah on the show and then suddenly he became one of the people and not only to become one of the not ready for primetime players he was the breakout star of that first season and and so michael hated this right yeah but chevy got up there and did all the michael and you can see all the is rolled and blah blah blah so everybody finish their thing and they're everybody done and i thought okay now i should probably get up and do my thing so i got up and i said unlike most of you i don't really know michael that well never did but i had this amazing week with him and let me tell you about it and suddenly i'll hear off to the side you gotta go out and i look and i see that it's chevy and he's getting out of the booth that he was in and nortre to leave the room he had to walk past me so i'm standing up in front of the room holding my laugh track and chevy comes walking past me and he stops when he gets in front of me and he puts out his hand to shake my hand so i respond and i start to shake his hand but instead of taking my hand he reaches down and grabs my entire three piece unit and he holds onto it and he says nice balls and then he lets go and he starts to leave now i'm utterly flummoxed as everybody doing this i am sort of frozen because i'd never had anybody grabbed my three piece unit quite like that let alone a movie star right so i didn't i didn't really think or say anything but then i looked and people were horrified and it wasn't it wasn't a me too thing it was a power dynamic right so here's this young kid getting up to say something nice at a place where he felt a little intimidated and the asshole movie star is gonna take advantage of it and try to shame him right because that was kind of the power dynamic right so it's also a little bit gay well i didn't take it that way and now here we are all these years later brendon frazier is talking about some guy grabbing his tainted the golden globes in its frontpage news so maybe this should be again another opportunity missed i'm telling you i'm telling you but here's the thing has what can we do to blow that up because page six actually wrote this up last week good no one picked it up doesn't think people care about chasing they care about brendan fraser's taint i think taints is sort of a new hot thing no no it was a guy from the golden globes who nobody knows grabbing a guy who people go i wonder if we're having a brendon frazier right whereas chevy chase's lease just didn't community just a couple of seasons ago but anyway so everybody's mortified and i want to know if chevy chase is a little bit gay and if he's done this to anybody else well we'll find out okay but before we do let me just tell you what happened so i look at everybody's like mortified eiser aghast and their bows and chevy just keeps walking and i just don't know what to do or say and then suddenly my mind clicks into gear and i suddenly snap out of it and i looked down at my crotch we're chevy had just been and then i looked up and i said something which i will tell you but i want to preface it by saying i know that it's not necessarily a brilliant ripe post today but in the moment the dynamic i said he had just made a movie called cops and robertson's bombed okay so i looked down and i go wow you know maybe cops in robertson's doesn't suck as much as i thought of course i was as young i always found him very very attractive very cute cute normal guy that was super funny it's just a little bit yeah he's he's just a little bit cuter than than average.
