Your brain on facts voted to go. Turkey talk today. So let's go through the myths and misconceptions by working our way through a painting an odd choice as this is an audio only medium. Certainly luckily we don't have to pick just one painting. Most paintings depicting the first thanksgiving in giant air quotes of sixteen twenty. One contain the same things about of puritan settlers dressed in austere black clothing. With bright metal buckles gathered around a table laden with food. Maybe the family patriarch is offering a prayer and a small group of native americans can be seen in the background. Maybe one or two in the foreground. If i were to show you jennie. Yeah that was in my history book which year all of them probably. That's how we've been taught to think of historical thanksgiving's but we're not school kids anymore. So it's time to update that image paintings of the first thanksgiving referred to that feast in sixteen twenty one in plymouth massachusetts. What we actually know about the feast. Concretely is very limited. It mostly comes from a single letter. Written by a communist named edward winslow two hundred and twenty years later in eighteen forty one. His letter was published in chronicles. Of the pilgrim fathers by boston writer and publisher alexander young and it was young. Who called the gathering. The first thanksgiving even though the word thanksgiving doesn't appear anywhere in winslow's letter that feast wouldn't have been thanksgiving to the pilgrims. Puritans did observe thanksgiving days after fortunate events like a good harvest. The were religious observances. People spent the day in church often in silent prayer and they fasted rather than feasted. It's almost the polar opposite of the way we celebrate thanksgiving today. So that day wasn't thanksgiving and it wasn't even the first for a few reasons for starters. It didn't happen a second time. Let alone annually. So it can hardly be said to be the first of anything it would take more than two hundred years for an autumn. Feast referred to as thanksgiving too widely proliferate second. It wasn't the first meal shared by europeans and native americans in the new world. A reasonable drive from my home here in. Virginia is the berkeley plantation where a thanksgiving feast was held this one by the europeans alone. Three dozen settlers arrived in the chesapeake bay in sixteen nineteen on a ship. They still had ham and wasters probably and said prayers of thanksgiving. It was declared that their arrival must be yearly and perpetually kept holy as a day of thanksgiving to almighty god end so it was for two whole years in march of sixteen twenty two. The poyton having noticed that the settlers weren't leaving and in fact were expanding their territory and kept trying to convert and civilize them attacked berkeley and other settlements killing over three hundred fair playboys if you ask historians in maine they'll tell you the first. Such meal happened not in sixteen twenty one in massachusetts but in sixteen. O seven in papa main. The popham colony barely lasted a year. Vincent Brown discusses his new book, ‘Tacky’s Revolt’
"Vincent Brown welcome to meet the rices. Slavery is war. Tell me what that means. Well. In the book. I tend to think of slavery itself as a state of war, and in that I'm following the enslaved themselves who often discuss slavery as a state of warfare amongst themselves, most famously allowed Equiano who we know as one of the most famous formerly enslaved abolitionists of the late eighteenth century British Atlantic. said in his autobiography that when you make people slaves. Them to live with you in a state of war. Now in that he was echoing the philosopher John Locke. Who said that what is slavery? But the state of war continued between what he thought was a lawful conqueror and the concord now John Locke was trying to legitimate slavery. He was an investor in the Royal African company, and he actually helped to write the constitution for the colony of south. Carolina, which became a slave state. State, but equiano was doing something a little bit different than John Locke. He was actually commenting upon the conditions of slavery, the violence that was required to maintain people in slavery and the kind of response that was bound to come by those people who had been subjected so violently so for him, slavery was a state of war, and there were other enslaved people who echoed. Seeing slavery that way helped me frame the slave revolt in Jamaica. In seventeen, sixty, seven, sixty, one, which was the largest in the eighteenth century, British Empire as a war itself right as one of a series of wars, all around the Atlantic world that then ed up in this conflict in seventeen sixty Jamaica I'd like to look at your own life, and where that intersects with war, because you grew up in San Diego, and in fact, it was very early on that. You became aware of conflicts. I did well. I'm an American citizen. I grew up in the United States. I was born in the late sixties at the height of the Vietnam War and I I'm sorry to say that I can't name a five year period when the US military hasn't been abroad somewhere engaged in conflict with somebody over the course of my entire life, which seems to me like a half century of war having. Having grown up in San Diego I grew up in one of the largest terry garrison towns really in the history of the world the US Navy is as a major base in San Diego. The US Marines just north of San Diego have a major base and so coming through high school. A lot of my friends would join the military because it was the big industry in town, right. And of course, you know, my family had been had served in the army. My father served in the army. My Uncle A. Brother had done three combat tours I. Believe one in Korea and two in Vietnam, so the history of the military, the engagement overseas abroad in military campaigns was very much a part of my thinking growing up, and so when I thought about the history of slavery. It just jumped out at me that this history was itself a history that was embroiled embedded in a world of warfare, especially in the eighteenth century win. You have got Great Britain struggling in a century long campaign against its its greatest global enemy France, and all of those European wars then topped onto. The wars of enslavement that sent people out across the Atlantic into the European colonies in America, and what you have is a world of wars within wars, which looked very familiar to me like the campaigns at the US was fighting within the larger ambit- of the Cold War so by the time I grew to adulthood in the late eighty S. I was seeing these these late cold war campaigns in these post colonial states as as part of the larger Cold War, and then you see these proxy wars between the US and the Soviet Union fought out in places like Afghanistan right, and then of course by two thousand one, you see those kind of proxy campaigns between the US and Soviet Union growing into something else what we now call the terror wars, the war on. On Terror in Afghanistan and elsewhere I didn't see those things as continuous. I didn't see the terror war something uniquely different from most proxy wars of the late. Cold War period and my thinking historically has been to ask the question. How is it that one connects these longer histories of warfare together? And I do think that I was inspired to think that partly by having grown up in San Diego in a military town. And what about your, your family's personal history with war and with slavery? Well an african-american! My parents grew up in Virginia, and so they are descended from people who are enslaved probably as far back as the eighteenth century the Chesapeake Bay area. What's now? Virginia and Maryland was one of the largest importers of slaves in North America now I say north. America because the British empire imported the vast majority of its enslaved peoples into the Caribbean but for North America the territories that became the United States, the Chesapeake and South Carolina with a major importers of enslaved African peoples, and my family is descended from. Those people probably brought to North America in the eighteenth century. History was big in your life obviously, but also the arch. Yeah well. When I was in high school I I became very involved in theater and went to college thinking that I was actually going to do a theater degree. But at some point I thought well, you know I could probably do theater without a theater degree, but maybe I should have a backup plan and my second love in college was history, and that ended up being my career.

AI for Earth helps researchers get more granular with climate data
"This holiday week. We wanted to revisit some of our climate coverage from this past year looking at how tech can help us adapt to climate change. The series is called how we survive and to start with. You have to understand the problem and then create smart solutions. That's the job of the Chesapeake Conservancy. It took Allenby's team eighteen months and more than a million dollars to manually process that data as in people having to identify things like the characteristics of a tree or label a house a house. Then they use the data to advise towns on what to prioritize whether it's planting trees or restoring wetlands or buying land to conserve and once word got out lots of other nonprofits like around. "We met our transportation challenges head on by rebuilding our infrastructure, and we have practiced skilled stewardship of the environment, which has resulted in clean air standards that are stronger than forty eight other states and a Chesapeake Bay which is cleaner than it has been recorded history. Our state is only twenty six percent Republican. But after four years of bipartisan success. An economic progress last November and are deep blue state in a big blue year with a huge Blue Wave. We wrote a purple surfboard. To an overwhelming double digit victory. And while my party was racking up losses all across the country. And our state where Hillary Clinton won in two thousand sixteen by twenty six points. As Jim mentioned, I got more votes than any previous gubernatorial candidate ever. And I became the second Republican governor reelected in the entire two hundred and forty three year history of our state, the voters of our state rejected divisive politics and voted instead for civility bipartisanship and common sense. And they sent a loud and clear message to Washington that they heard across the country. As a young man I worked for Ronald Reagan. Who wants said at there is no limit to the amount of good that you can do if you don't care who gets the credit. It's that kind of commonsense pragmatism that has guided our pass we found a way to disagree without being disagreeable. We stood side by side with our democratic legislature are different views clearly acknowledged, but not obstructing our path forward. We spent four years working together to unshackle the unlimited promise and potential of our state. We debated discussed and reason together, honestly and productively with integrity. And sincere purpose we argued without acrimony negotiated without hidden agendas and compromise without political posturing, we didn't demand Republican solutions or democratic solutions. We saw it out by partisan. Commonsense solutions that worked for the people of our state. We didn't surrender our principles. We simply practiced the art of the possible, and we trusted the voters to appreciate the distinction rather than engaging mere rhetoric we delivered real results for the people who elected us..

John wall who was the secretary of the column he records event, John? Ralph was poke haunted husband. He noted the date as August sixteen nineteen. Climb up to an overlook on top of the fort an American flag snaps in the wind. You look out on the horizon, and you can see why there's a fort here. Looking down at an expansive natural harbor for the Atlantic. Ocean meets the Chesapeake Bay and the James river in front of us across the water are three aircraft carriers and Norfolk naval station the largest naval port in the world. Sixteen nineteen state markers. Actually, it's so bright can barely see. But it's a state market right down there along the seawall to white time with black letters. That says this is where the first inflamed Africans arrived. It went up in the nineteen ninety s before that Calvin Pearson says no one knew the real history Pearson grew up in Hampton, the city that's home to fort Monroe me, why is the landing so important. And I tell them that to me is like your birth. You can only be born one time, nobody can change that fact to their propaganda or marketing or promotion, no in tourism needs Pearson's talking about historic Jamestown, an attraction with colonial archaeological sites and reconstructed buildings. He says people thought it was the arrival site so Pearson founded a group called project sixteen nineteen it's been working for more than two decades to raise awareness. That the first Africans arrived at point comfort renew. Eventually the four hundred anniversary would come. It was important to us start this movement twenty five years ago because if we had not the story we telling today, the commemoration that Virginia is starting to promote would have taken place at Jamestown. They suddenly arrived at point comfort. We have Johm roofs sauce for that. But that's no mentioned in the sources the the Africans actually landed that James horn is president of Jamestown rediscovery the foundation that runs historic Jamestown. He thinks the Africans were probably kept on the ship at point comfort. So they wouldn't have a chance to escape horn says it's likely buyers road out to the ship to barter on board, then returned with the slaves to Jamestown the next census shows several living there along with Africans from the white lions sistership the treasurer we. Jamestown without any question a site where one of those first Africans Angela lift, and I think that without taking anything away from point comfort on Hampton in terms of that's where the ships stopped home route. What significant to me is we might learn more about the African experience by looking at the actual places. They did live rather than simply at a place where two ships arrived. There are a lot of archival records that no one's gone through yet right now. No one can say they know for sure where exactly the first slave Africans set foot. And what today is the US wherever it was Robert Kelly, the fort Monroe historian says there would be a nice poetic symmetry if it happened at point comfort because of the other big rule this place played in history on the same site where slavery begins. We see it in America. We see it began to unravel Kelly's talking about the. Civil war fort Monroe stayed in the union, even though Virginia had seceded and the fort was south of the capital of the confederacy Richmond. A hundred miles northwest things were tents may of eighteen sixty one three enslave men stole a boat just across the water in confederacy controlled country and paddled nearly three miles to fort Monroe where they asked for safe haven. It was the second day on the job for Major General Benjamin Butler. He was faced with the decision that at that point even president Lincoln had voided making whether the north should stand for freedom for slaves interviews, each each one of the men and has to decide what to do when a Representative for their owner, actually, a confederate appears here.
