"Only in Istanbul, but also an Ankara. And people have been very much worrying. Are we back to that? Traffic and weather on the 8th to Steve dresner in the WTO traffic center. In Maryland at the Chesapeake Bay bridge all quiet, no road work set up over either span we have three lanes open, westbound two we spend, we're in good shape along route three O one no problems reported at the nice Mac Middleton bridge staying in Maryland, Montgomery county, road where it set up on the interloop of the capitol beltway approaching the Clara Barton Parkway blocks a right lane, then after the exit for New Hampshire avenue at last report that works on his two to the left getting by window delays traffic moving well, both directions on the beltway over in prince George's county. North bent on the BW Parkway delays have gone away, despite the road work that set up after route 100, single right lane gets by, then the westbound route 100 ramp to go to southbound 95 remains blocked for the overnight roadwork. Traffic otherwise a decent shape on 95 and two 70 in the district, we do have maintenance going on, the southbound side, three 95 through the third street tunnel right after the light at New York avenue is hand or the tunnel sing right language about it again they're working on the overhead lights, not affecting the flow over on the northbound side otherwise traffic moving nicely on D.C. two 95 and I tune 95. "Traffic and weather where the time now is two O 8. Slower clock trains, call Michael and son and get $100 off a train cleaning today. Rob take a weather all the 8s and when it breaks, Ian Crawford's in the WTO traffic center. And we are busy busy, busy. We start in Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay bridge trying to get from Annapolis to cat island, can't do it right now. All travel lanes have been brought to a stop, traffic had been traveling on the eastbound span one lane in each direction as they do work on the westbound span that works out is still in place as we can tell. Now checking in my cameras looks like we're getting some traffic moving once again as you make your way from to and from stevensville on the eastern shore of the bridge, but again, following police direction expect delays the crash activity on the eastbound span of the bay bridge, you only have one lane in each direction, so you may be alternating across the bay bridge. Elsewhere in Maryland the earlier crash on the inner loop of the capitol bellway near Richie Marlborough road, that has been cleared. All traveling to have been reopened and that's now much again back up to scratch on 95 and on the BW Parkway, we are quiet. We go to Virginia, check our work zone on the inner loop near gallows road heading toward I 66 still moving past the work single file to the right. This is overhead work, see a big old crane there, and when they have to move that crane over the highway, they've got to bring traffic to a stop, so it expects stoppages coming out of the Springfield interchange, trying to get toward Tyson's outer loop work off the American legion bridge, getting past the GW Parkway doing so fairly quietly with no reported delays, single left is how you're doing it. 66 the westbound work zones all still in place. After the capitol beltway to the left in a single file after the oaks exit 57 for route 50 you're over to the right in a single file then after suddenly wrote back over to the left single file past the work heading toward Gainesville. Can't find the new car you're looking for. Try and fit to a used car. Next to

Less than ideal for vacationers who made it a longer holiday weekend on the eastern shore route 50 westbound, it is about a 13 mile long backup from the narrows across the Chesapeake Bay bridge and on to broad neck. The issue is a combination of the heavy homebound traffic and a tractor trailer crash west of cape saint Clair exit 29 with the truck overturned on the right side of the highway taking down wires with it. So we keep close eye on that because the atmosphere across northern portions of our listening area is still kind of unstable. And we're watching another band of storms now moving in from Pennsylvania. In the northern portions of Frederick and Carol county in Maryland. Washington DC conservation group pushes back against a stream restoration project in Alexandria

"In northern Virginia Christi King W. T. O P news. Local leaders and residents of Alexandria are questioning If the Taylor runs Stream restoration will cause more harm than good. The tailor run project was initiated to stabilize the stream corridor and improve local water all while striving to meet the Chesapeake Bay cleanup goals. But the chair of the Environmental Council of Alexandria, Dr Andrew MacDonald, says the process would be harmful. One of the reasons for doing the stream restoration project Is to make the stream healthier and better. The science doesn't bear that out. He says. The large amounts of sediment that would be added to the channels could cause flooding, but local conservationists rust, Bailey says there are some better alternatives. Water retention mechanisms. Box truck goes over Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel rail, Coast Guard suspends search for person possibly in water

"Box truck drove through the guard rails on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel earlier today and went over the side into the bay. The Coast Guard and firefighters have been searching the cold water for the driver, Wavy TV and Norfolk says it happened near Virginia's Eastern shore about a 20. If you've ever taken this bridge, it's almost 18 miles long, two tunnels for shipping traffic and it connects the Eastern shore with Virginia Beach. This wasn't the first card to go over the side. Thanks-myth-ing

"Most without equal for this recipe you will need one each skylark thrush quayle ortolan lapping. Golden plover partridge woodcock. -til guinea hen guinea fowl. Wild duck red pheasant. Wild goose boostered and fake pecker pluck and got the birds then stuff the smallest bird into the next smallest birds cavity and so on until you have one neutron star of bird meet paraphrased from seventeenth century cookbook and you thought her duck in was a new thing. My name's moxy. And this is your brain on facts. Two days after this episode drops. It is thanksgiving in the united states and the supporters at patriot. Dot com slash. Your brain on facts voted to go. Turkey talk today. So let's go through the myths and misconceptions by working our way through a painting an odd choice as this is an audio only medium. Certainly luckily we don't have to pick just one painting. Most paintings depicting the first thanksgiving in giant air quotes of sixteen twenty. One contain the same things about of puritan settlers dressed in austere black clothing. With bright metal buckles gathered around a table laden with food. Maybe the family patriarch is offering a prayer and a small group of native americans can be seen in the background. Maybe one or two in the foreground. If i were to show you jennie. Augusta browns combs. The first thanksgiving or the first thanksgiving by louise jerome farris painted within a year of each other in the early twentieth century. Incidentally you'd say oh. Yeah that was in my history book which year all of them probably. That's how we've been taught to think of historical thanksgiving's but we're not school kids anymore. So it's time to update that image paintings of the first thanksgiving referred to that feast in sixteen twenty one in plymouth massachusetts. What we actually know about the feast. Concretely is very limited. It mostly comes from a single letter. Written by a communist named edward winslow two hundred and twenty years later in eighteen forty one. His letter was published in chronicles. Of the pilgrim fathers by boston writer and publisher alexander young and it was young. Who called the gathering. The first thanksgiving even though the word thanksgiving doesn't appear anywhere in winslow's letter that feast wouldn't have been thanksgiving to the pilgrims. Puritans did observe thanksgiving days after fortunate events like a good harvest. The were religious observances. People spent the day in church often in silent prayer and they fasted rather than feasted. It's almost the polar opposite of the way we celebrate thanksgiving today. So that day wasn't thanksgiving and it wasn't even the first for a few reasons for starters. It didn't happen a second time. Let alone annually. So it can hardly be said to be the first of anything it would take more than two hundred years for an autumn. Feast referred to as thanksgiving too widely proliferate second. It wasn't the first meal shared by europeans and native americans in the new world. A reasonable drive from my home here in. Virginia is the berkeley plantation where a thanksgiving feast was held this one by the europeans alone. Three dozen settlers arrived in the chesapeake bay in sixteen nineteen on a ship. Captain by a man who had survived the winter of sixteen o nine in the jamestown colony a winter referred to as the starving time after a rough two and a half months at sea and another week on inland waterways. They finally arrived at berkeley hundred later called berkeley plantation on december fourth. They disembarked assembled a meal. From what shifts rations. They still had ham and wasters probably and said prayers of thanksgiving. It was declared that their arrival must be yearly and perpetually kept holy as a day of thanksgiving to almighty god end so it was for two whole years in march of sixteen twenty two. The poyton having noticed that the settlers weren't leaving and in fact were expanding their territory and kept trying to convert and civilize them attacked berkeley and other settlements killing over three hundred fair playboys if you ask historians in maine they'll tell you the first. Such meal happened not in sixteen twenty one in massachusetts but in sixteen. O seven in papa main. The popham colony barely lasted a year. Thanks to a fire in their storehouse during the particularly harsh winter and miscalculations like staying in a four right on the shore rather than moving inland where the forest could provide a windbreak. The Suitcase Murder

"My name is Meghan Sacks criminologist at Fairleigh Dickinson University. In simplest terms criminology is the scientific study of what causes crime and how the criminal justice system. Response. To crime. Ridden about twenty, five true crime books over the years and I think many maguire is perhaps one of the most interesting ones and baffling. This is Melanie. McGuire arrested today minutes after dropping offer children in daycare. Melanie, McGuire a New Jersey nurse was accused of killing her husband cutting up his body and throwing it into the Chesapeake Bay. In two thousand, seven, what was being called? The suitcase murder trial was generating an enormous amount of media attention, not just in New Jersey, but all across the country three bazaar discoveries, three separate suitcases, all containing human remains the woman who is on trial for her very life. She says the real truth behind the crime has never been revealed with no history of violence and no apparent motive for murder. Could she really have done it? She was this beautiful young nurse and they were the seemingly normal middle class couple and the murder happened in such a grisly way. The idea that this beautiful nurse could have actually killed her husband and then cut him up is just incredible. Of course, they were salacious aspects. Maguire is a nurse and prosecutors say she had an affair with a doctor. She didn't fit the profile I. Guess of a murderer over the years and colleagues of ours have come to me and said, you know Melanie McGuire proclaims her innocence and to tell her story I started thinking Oh maybe there is a little more to this case than what you see on the surface and then the idea podcast came up and I was all in on direct appeal examined the murder conviction of Melanie, McGuire him following a highly publicized trial looking at the evidence that was presented and the evidence that may have seemed insignificant at the time before own conclusion about Melanie's guilt. We hear at ABC have our own history with the Melanie. McGuire case back in two thousand, seven ABC's Cynthia McFadden had the first on camera interview at the mother of two on trial for murdering her husband. Who was the Melanie? McGuire you hope to jury. knows. The one who tried to take care of everybody. Who didn't make the smartest decisions but admitted to those mistakes? To the people she trusted most. But. Did Not admit what what she's acute stuff. I have been incarcerated for twelve and a half going on thirteen years now. Do. You still insist that you're innocent. Absolutely. You're sitting here. A wrongfully convicted person. Correct. Absolutely and what have those years spend like? I tell people. It's not as bad as you think in some ways and it's so much worse than I could ever articulate in others. After all these years I. Still feel her I still feel bothered. I still feel like how could somebody think? That I did that. This whole saga begins on May. Fifth two thousand four with an odd discovery in Virginia Beach. Early morning a couple of fishermen and the kids are out on a boat by the Chesapeake Bay. Me and my friend Don Connors was going to go out fishing and we both had days off D. or Don. We Call Them D. said, keep his kids out of school. We're GONNA take him fishing. Everybody was excited. We went right out this bridge here. and to keep on going you run right in the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. In the Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel is seventeen and a half miles long. It really is quite astonishing. It connects the eastern shore of Virginia to Virginia Beach has two tunnels, two shipping channels, and then once you get on the other side, you go North into Maryland Delaware New Jersey.

Vincent Brown discusses his new book, ‘Tacky’s Revolt’

"Vincent Brown welcome to meet the rices. Slavery is war. Tell me what that means. Well. In the book. I tend to think of slavery itself as a state of war, and in that I'm following the enslaved themselves who often discuss slavery as a state of warfare amongst themselves, most famously allowed Equiano who we know as one of the most famous formerly enslaved abolitionists of the late eighteenth century British Atlantic. said in his autobiography that when you make people slaves. Them to live with you in a state of war. Now in that he was echoing the philosopher John Locke. Who said that what is slavery? But the state of war continued between what he thought was a lawful conqueror and the concord now John Locke was trying to legitimate slavery. He was an investor in the Royal African company, and he actually helped to write the constitution for the colony of south. Carolina, which became a slave state. State, but equiano was doing something a little bit different than John Locke. He was actually commenting upon the conditions of slavery, the violence that was required to maintain people in slavery and the kind of response that was bound to come by those people who had been subjected so violently so for him, slavery was a state of war, and there were other enslaved people who echoed. Seeing slavery that way helped me frame the slave revolt in Jamaica. In seventeen, sixty, seven, sixty, one, which was the largest in the eighteenth century, British Empire as a war itself right as one of a series of wars, all around the Atlantic world that then ed up in this conflict in seventeen sixty Jamaica I'd like to look at your own life, and where that intersects with war, because you grew up in San Diego, and in fact, it was very early on that. You became aware of conflicts. I did well. I'm an American citizen. I grew up in the United States. I was born in the late sixties at the height of the Vietnam War and I I'm sorry to say that I can't name a five year period when the US military hasn't been abroad somewhere engaged in conflict with somebody over the course of my entire life, which seems to me like a half century of war having. Having grown up in San Diego I grew up in one of the largest terry garrison towns really in the history of the world the US Navy is as a major base in San Diego. The US Marines just north of San Diego have a major base and so coming through high school. A lot of my friends would join the military because it was the big industry in town, right. And of course, you know, my family had been had served in the army. My father served in the army. My Uncle A. Brother had done three combat tours I. Believe one in Korea and two in Vietnam, so the history of the military, the engagement overseas abroad in military campaigns was very much a part of my thinking growing up, and so when I thought about the history of slavery. It just jumped out at me that this history was itself a history that was embroiled embedded in a world of warfare, especially in the eighteenth century win. You have got Great Britain struggling in a century long campaign against its its greatest global enemy France, and all of those European wars then topped onto. The wars of enslavement that sent people out across the Atlantic into the European colonies in America, and what you have is a world of wars within wars, which looked very familiar to me like the campaigns at the US was fighting within the larger ambit- of the Cold War so by the time I grew to adulthood in the late eighty S. I was seeing these these late cold war campaigns in these post colonial states as as part of the larger Cold War, and then you see these proxy wars between the US and the Soviet Union fought out in places like Afghanistan right, and then of course by two thousand one, you see those kind of proxy campaigns between the US and Soviet Union growing into something else what we now call the terror wars, the war on. On Terror in Afghanistan and elsewhere I didn't see those things as continuous. I didn't see the terror war something uniquely different from most proxy wars of the late. Cold War period and my thinking historically has been to ask the question. How is it that one connects these longer histories of warfare together? And I do think that I was inspired to think that partly by having grown up in San Diego in a military town. And what about your, your family's personal history with war and with slavery? Well an african-american! My parents grew up in Virginia, and so they are descended from people who are enslaved probably as far back as the eighteenth century the Chesapeake Bay area. What's now? Virginia and Maryland was one of the largest importers of slaves in North America now I say north. America because the British empire imported the vast majority of its enslaved peoples into the Caribbean but for North America the territories that became the United States, the Chesapeake and South Carolina with a major importers of enslaved African peoples, and my family is descended from. Those people probably brought to North America in the eighteenth century. History was big in your life obviously, but also the arch. Yeah well. When I was in high school I I became very involved in theater and went to college thinking that I was actually going to do a theater degree. But at some point I thought well, you know I could probably do theater without a theater degree, but maybe I should have a backup plan and my second love in college was history, and that ended up being my career.

AI for Earth helps researchers get more granular with climate data

"This holiday week. We wanted to revisit some of our climate coverage from this past year looking at how tech can help us adapt to climate change. The series is called how we survive and to start with. You have to understand the problem and then create smart solutions. That's the job of the Chesapeake Conservancy. Urban City a nonprofit organisation that uses technology to recommend conservation techniques for the Chesapeake Bay and a lot of it comes down to the resolution of the data Jeff Allenby NBA Director of conservation technology at the Chesapeake Conservancy. Now one thing to know. Is that the Chesapeake Bay. Watershed is huge. It's sixty four thousand thousand square miles spanning six eastern US states and the organization mapped the whole area. Down to the meter the data set that would be created for the Jessica that one meter resolution was instill is one of the biggest High resolution they uncovered data sets ever created in the world. It took Allenby's team eighteen months and more than a million dollars to manually process that data as in people having to identify things like the characteristics of a tree or label a house a house. Then they use the data to advise towns on what to prioritize whether it's planting trees or restoring wetlands or buying land to conserve and once word got out lots of other nonprofits like around. The Great Lakes wanted to do the same thing with map data. Most don't have the time or the money but big tech companies do budget simply can't be a barrier to people accessing technology. Lucas JOPPA leads. Microsoft's AI. For Earth Program which lends the company's computing power her and machine learning capabilities to organizations trying to tackle climate solutions. The program worked with the Chesapeake Conservancy to scale up their approach. To land mapping to a much bigger area and faster we wanted to do that for the entire United States over ten trillion pixels and it can't take a year and a half to do it because if it does your going to be out of date by the time you're done right. The company awards grants let's organizations and scientists use its cloud computing resources and loans out data scientists assist to various climate related projects. JOPPA says right now. Ai For earth isn't meant to be a money maker but he says tech companies have a responsibility to be part of climate solutions solutions beyond their own in house efforts. We've got to make sure that we have our own house in order but then we do have to be proactive and going out and and ensuring that our products are it deployed in ways that empower people to amplify their sustainability impact and there's business value for Microsoft and being there. I were a platform company and we would prefer to be the platform of choice for everybody building technology inspired solutions to environmental challenges for Jeff Allenby at the Chesapeake Conservancy. The real value comes and being able to know what's working and what's not so you know what to conserve and what to let go. So from the adaptive side of it it really allows you to to understand the context of kind of any given action and it allows you to understand the alternatives. If that action can't go forward and Allenby she says those decisions have to be made quickly because there isn't any time to waste

Most don't have the time or the money, but big tech companies do budget simply can't be a barrier to people accessing technology, Lucas Joppa leads Microsoft's AI for earth program, which lends the company's computing power and machine. Learning capabilities to organizations trying to tackle climate solutions the program worked with the Chesapeake conservancy to scale up their approach to land mapping to a much bigger area and faster. We wanted to do that, for the entire United States over ten trillion pixels and it can't take a year and a half to do it. Because if it does you're going to be out of date by the time. You're done right. The company awards grants. Let's organizations and scientists use its cloud computing resources and loans out data scientists to various climate related projects, Joppa, says right now AI for earth isn't meant to be a money maker, but he says tech companies have a responsibility to be part of climate solutions beyond their own in house efforts. We've gotta make sure that we have our own house in order. But then we do have to be proactive in going out and, and ensuring that our products are deployed in ways that empower people to amplify their sustainability impact. And there's business value for Microsoft, and being there, first, where a platform company, and we would prefer to be the platform of choice for everybody. Building technology inspired solutions to environmental challenges for Jeff Allenby at the Chesapeake conservancy, the real value comes and being able to know what's working, and what's not so you know what to conserve and what to let go. So from the side of it, it really allows you to, to understand the context. Of kind of any given action. And it allows you to understand the alternatives. If that action can't go forward and Allenby says those decisions have to be made quickly because there isn't any time to waste. And now I am related links. You can see some of the super detailed maps that the Chesapeake conservancy created and a little more detail about those projects at our website marketplace tech dot org. Thanks, Dan Ackerman, from the water main project at American public media for turning that into a super cool story. And we've got linked to more information about some of the grants that the Microsoft AI for earth project has given out last month in announced five hundred thousand dollars for new grants that will actually be distributed by the Leonardo DiCaprio foundation. And we know that climate intelligence is the first place to start with a lot of these adaptation efforts. So there's a lot more news on that front, all the time earlier this month AT and T shared, the data that it's been using to evaluate the risks to its facilities, and make them more resilient to extreme weather. These data sets were developed by the department of energy's, Argonne National Laboratory, and AT and T made them all available to the public. The company also started a climate resiliency community challenged, so that universities can work with towns in southeastern. States to develop solutions and risk analysis based on that data and just last week in an attempt to get everybody looking at the same peer review trustworthy data the World Meteorological Organization launched the WMO catalog for climate data there. Eighteen data sets in there, so far and the organization hopes more will be added soon, the Wm oh, by the way, I also just learned is basically, the in house, weather, and climate agency of the United Nations. Another fun fact last week, the WMO elected Gerhard Adrian of Germany, as its new president for four year term. And I mentioned this because he beat out our guy. Trump Signs Executive Orders to Boost Oil, Gas Industry

"President Trump signing a pair of executive orders orders aimed at boosting US oil and gas production. My action today will cut through destructive permiting delays in denial. You know about that, you know, the orders limit states rights delay construction of pipelines under the clean water act. They are the latest actions by the administration to ease regulations on the oil industry, but some including Maryland's Republican governor Larry HOGAN are blasting the move. He says in a statement, it could jeopardize things like Chesapeake Bay restoration efforts
