"I'm Cherry Greg. Our newsmaker of the week is a bride who refused to let a global pandemic stopped their love, Selena Brewster and Odell Johnson data for half dozen years before they decided to solidify their union the days before their march 19th nuptials statewide lockdowns of restrictions threatened their big day, but they pushed through it all focusing instead. On what matters most with me is Selina Brewster Johnson woke up two flashpoint. Thank you so much for having me. I am so excited. Congratulate. Asians on your recent wedding. Thank you so much. A lot of people have been canceling weddings, postponing weddings because of this Corona virus crisis. But you pushed ahead along with your new husband. Explain why we never really planned to have a really big meeting. In the beginning. We always wanted to have a small private legal ceremony in a couple of bombs. We were going to have like a large public ceremony because we have a lot of family and a lot of friends that we wanted to share in the days because we wanted to keep the legal family small. We felt as though you know, we would just push through. 2020 has been a wild year because you guys didn't even decide to get married until very recently. Yes, it was actually, January 26th. It was the day that Kobe Bryant died. And you know, I'm from Philly. Kobe Bryant know he's from this area. Was very deeply impacted my then boyfriend. He was as well and I remember the day we found out I said, Babe, listen, and we've been together for six years. And I would hate for something to happen to you. And for me to be in your obituary as your special friends and the same thing for me like, what are we doing? Let's just get married because up until then, we just went well, you know, we got you know, we have to get the house. We have to have this in order. We have to have that It was all of the things as a site tells people you need to have first before you're married and Like, you know, I thought you would want the really big wedding and I was just like you know what, Like that Koli Bryant's death. It just really resonated with me, And I said no now at the time, so let's just get married and he said Okay, let's do it. So he said, you know, just pick a date, and I told March the 19th 2020 because it's the first day of spring and I have been through so much in my own life that to me, it was a signal of renewal rebirth. And so I said, I don't care what goes down. It's March 19th in of course, we hear. Of this the spread of Arai original, and then we go into a serious lock down what went through your mind. You know, I actually did take it seriously. We actually found some pastors who would marry us on the 19th. They opened up their church split at the time, The city said no more than 10 people at a public gathering. So we only had seven people at our ceremony. And actually, that should have been more. My husband's father in his his wife. They could Calm because they're in North Carolina. And I believe at the time North Carolina had to stay in order in place. My parents are from Philadelphia, but they couldn't come because my mother cares for very sickly, faintly member and she's elderly. So my mother couldn't come from my own wedding. But that's how seriously we trust. You know, the Corona virus and a warning and given the death of Kobe Bryant, and then this widespread pandemic did that even make you want to cling to Odell and say, You know what this is? This is the perfect time. You know, like, let's just do it and remember how quickly he decided we were going to do it. He didn't propose to me. He didn't have a ring to do it. So I went into the ceremony. Russia's Duval I knew in a couple months will do something public while he actually surprised me with a brain, the ceremony it was so sweet and when he put that ring on finger, I was just like, Wow, This is the man that I want to spend the rest of my life. But we really just deal we had to do and some people who laughed at us because afterwards, you know we were hungry. And at the time in the city, you could go to arrest Amar, but you couldn't sit and you couldn't dine in. So we went to one of our favorite spots called Silly style has burned down and we we ordered chicken cheese, a buffalo wings, chicken Alfredo salad and I had a chocolate milkshake and we went back on 80 and it wouldn't worry. A lot of people are very gloom and doom right now, But this is like a bright spot. In all of this man when we were making our planes and we were doing things, read it and look at it as though Wow, we're getting married in the middle of a painting. We looked at it as this is what we want to do. And a lot of people. You know the object what we were doing, but we did it our way. And just to think that because I was still nontraditional, like I wore a burnt orange jumpsuit to my wedding. I do not wear way so I was just so happy in the Olympia is really overwhelming that people are like, Wow, This is a really historian there. Like we're learning to just go after what you want to just do it and what I love about this whole experience is that the Corona virus stripped down to what really, truly will always you, and that's our love for each other. That's the silver lining of all of this. It's forcing people to go back to what matters. The most. I find that more people are caring about each other people are finding didn't wait to talk. They're using my room and sky. I really feel like it's making us human against. And so what's the vision for yourself, Because it's going to be a lot of When a baby's born 10 months from now, do you think I'll go have one of what? I already have a son from a previous relationship that we both adore. And I would love to unhappy with Odell. So I am very much old into that if you all have a corona, baby on top of getting married during the Corona virus, that'll be one for the ages. Congratulations to you and thank you so much for coming on flashpoint and talking about this issue in the news. Next up, bringing hope block by block. So happy that.
