Was that the who acquired a rocket mail because of a follower to hotmail before be made on move on On hotmail and i think the purchase it for like hundred ten million and They had I think nine hundred thousand users something tonight effect but it's taught mill had about eight million users and immediately set the price for hotmail So measly made that whole acquisition for us a lot more expensive because talk guys could say hey you know knocking just acquired by by yahu for this despise and they are far fewer users than we if you calculate a user price than we should be worth x. so it made it music. He made the accusation Enough hotmail not expensive for us. I'm gonna skip ahead in your career but We did miss that. You were involved in the launch of microsoft visual c plus plus You know so you were very involved in Windows development tools and things like that but let me let me skip ahead in the interest of time to. Are you go the startup. Route yourself with Team on systems. Right yes and so. This is again Web web based email but more of an enterprise sort of product. yea so I had clearly developed a significant amount humil- expertise while i was at microsoft and i was blown away by the simplicity of hotmail and at that time microsoft soft-eyed Something goal exchange server Because they're slide server based email system but the challenge exchange was that you had to have system administrators to set it up manage all the servers to upgrade it. Back it up all of that costs and felt that that was too expensive for small to mid sized companies. And so i said hey if it's hotmail was successful as a web based consumer email service. Why not grid a enterprise grade or business scale you know email service with counting scheduling along with that so that it could meet the needs of small smart midsized. Companies provide the same kind of functionality that exchange there but without any hassles of upgrading backing up et cetera. system. so again was of the first business Products out there and be launched in fact the same line at a at sd of the event. as as You know Some of the other services at that time. What year is this. This was a nineteen ninety nine so This is right when palm pilots are taking off things like so it's essentially You sorta pivot a little bit too Allowing sort of mobile access to like restrooms encounters. And things like that. Yeah yeah so this'll span. Blackberry was getting started. They had a couple of hundred thousand blackberry users and then phones commodity phones were becoming internet enabled but something called. Gps umeda call that very slow connection and you had these Special purpose browsers called web browsers that allowed you access the internet from your phone and so we found that given that email had become ubiquitous that You know of purchasing inexpensive device like blackberry. Why not enable phones to access their allow users but phones to access than existing email accounts and our engineering team did a great job of reverse engineering all the proprietary email systems including aol hotmail up. You know microsoft exchange noticed notes. We could all access a to our system win win. Were you acquired by blackberry. But your was that it was in two thousand to two thousand two because again i feel like blackberry is one of those companies that risks going down the memory hole in terms of how important it was in how huge it was at the time but the idea of getting your email When you're out on out in the field out on the road or whatever. That's that's what made blackberry blackberry. So your systems are essentially. What became blackberry internet email. Yeah so blackberry. Had to email systems One was the original corporate email system that allowed you to access the on exchange notes. Email but When they started selling to wireless carriers like t. mobile and singular at that time and bryson davis saying. Hey there's a class of user scott costumers these are business folks who small businesses and they don't use exchange lotus notes day. They use Poppy male of use. Aol or they use some of these other systems and be want access to enable those users to access the existing email comes and blackburn. Did not have a solution for that. And so that's why they acquired a team on systems and the technology bill became known as like the internet email and in fact that at one point the remote like internet email users than the corporate system. Right here. we're talking about fifty million when there's probably only a couple of hundred million You know Remote cellular based internet users in the world at that point I i think you leave blackberry before the iphone comes out right. Yes bug before that. Do you have any the eddie memory in terms of when the iphone comes out From from friends back at blackberry what their reaction was. Or what the even the industry or your personal reaction to the idea that the internet is mobile is so fundamental now but it it it kind of took the iphone to make it make sense to again folks like my mom. So do you remember that. That moment. In time when seeing the iphone and seeing that next couple of years when the mobile web and internet really took off Discount my reaction. I could probably describe the action of ram gone away by the iphone nine tons of touch interface and the fact that they had done such an incredible job of building an easy to use the device. That only allowed you to access email but also the bab and so forth. But i can tell you at ram their reaction was. This is never going to be successful. Who in the world would want to type on a glass of us and the battery life on this is going to be dismal The something that you know the rim folks bay brought about blackberry was the fact that it provided commend us battery life because it was so You know a spartan its usage of of a battery and so forth so they. I'm sure they basically thought that they're such a big lead. The great product that this was going to be died and and would not succeed as a as a as a device so that was unfortunately he had the wrong conclusion as they found out that you live two years later and up Iphone and android phones really took over cherise. Let's stipulate that you you've done other startups. So since april The twelve to twenty nine year old age group has had the highest rate of Of new infections of cova and This also happens to be the group with the lowest rates of vaccination And so i think it's important for us to find ways to reach out and to effectively communicate with adolescents and young adults about the importance of vaccination and specifically addressing The circumstance at someone who's been previously infected We know that a natural infection produces some immunity But we also think that that immunity may wane over time and You know so. I think it's important still even for those who have had a previous infection. Once they've completed their period of isolation in in fully recovered. It's still important for them to to seek vaccination as a means of of additional protection. We're right at the end of the hour. And dr clark is or anything you want to say to the frontline. And i had so much fun meeting those people and the constituents of the third district of kansas are just such incredible people as evidenced in the last years. I'm just like so proud but you have an amazing project. I devoured it. Gosh it didn't take me super duper long. Just love a children's book. they're fine. But congratulations on theresa's big ways. I buck first children's book but this book can be enjoyed by everyone. I loved it. I also just wanted to say one more thing. That's really major. That i left out in the when you're sorta into one hundred and th congress you became one of the first two native american women serve in congress and the first openly lgbtq. I a. plus person to represent kansas. Which is i wanted to mention that because it is so incredible. And that's part of what i think is so cool about this children's book sri voice native could becomes a congresswoman. It begs the question. What were you like when you were a kid like did you know you're gonna turn out to be a congresswoman. Did you want to be not at all i now. I don't know what i thought when i was a kid. Actually about what. I would be like as an adult which may be meant. I was present. I don't know. But i talked a lot ahead. A lot of energy. Almost immediately in the book I go into. I talk a lot talked a lot then. I talk a lot now and frankly. I don't know how. I don't know how mom handled how much energy i had shoot us. Just be the most patient person. Also just i was obsessed with bruce lee I was a picky eater then. I'm picky eater now Yeah i think. I think i was like more fun when i was little. Been not but i'm not. I'm not jaded as an adult. I feel like i should say that you do have such an optimistic can do spirit. Which is i think one thing that people love about you but going back to like baby kim cerise like what we're so bruce lee was an inst- interest or of your other. Like just you know to me. It was obviously michelle. Kwan figure skating gymnastics. What was your version of figure skating and gymnastics not. They could do either of those things. But i was obsessed with them like what were your biggest interest growing up the martial arts stuff really island. I watched all the martial arts movies. I would run around like dressed up in. I find black belts and white shirts and put them on and put headbands on And just run around like punching and kicking and then also mind. Mom was very much into tennis. And so i remember watching a lot of tennis when i was growing up and then when i got to high school i started playing tennis and i will. I really liked it s It's like it's expensive when you have to like in the wintertime. If you're gonna play The rackets can get expensive too. But it's just something like you know. And then of course. We watched a lot of like professional women's tennis. I love tennis. I had to ask you who your favorite player was you. Call it like a rivalry type of new. Who is your railroad. So you know steffi graf and martina a martina navratilova steffi graf. Monica seles. I listen to say that to double here. The forehand was epic. Are monica seles major. I also loved martina hingis really until she did that. Underhand serve in the french open. And i was like girl. Get it together. Come on so in the book you revisit the younger version of yourself. What was that like to do. Not now who you become was that was that cathartic was a healing was it was it kind of like surreal. What was that like. first of all. It's it's really interesting to do this. Sort of thing With someone else. So when i say someone else both nancy who helped with She a creative writer in like knows how to do. A bunch of stuff and So talking with her about the story arc in which stories to include but also lots of conversations with my mom. You know in my when you're a kid you remember things different than your parents do and so it was really interesting. That part was really interesting because there were some stories that my mom and i hadn't really talked about by what her impression of what was coming out of that meant and So there were some stories. Actually it was my mom's idea to include the story about the There's a story about win. One of my classmates got really upset and ran out of it. Ran out of the classroom and Because my gift gab. You know i end up talking with them and and And it's kind of like a learning moment but it was my mom's idea to include that one because she was able to see as an adult like oh that Around that time and then after we talked about of i was thinking she still right. And i think a lot of ways. That part was interesting to talk to my mom about what might progression as a as a young person was and then i was also thinking so i am not..

He was being very playful though, and they looked like they were having a great grand old. Well, that's the thing. I feel like this is like the first time they finally showed like and I I'm sure that there were times they were like this within the past few months. I don't think they were arguing the whole time. Well things take a really really kicked off because she is now client crying on the recliner. She calls the wedding officiant and canceled the wedding. She tells the wedding officiant that she he changed his mind and the wedding officiant Teresa said Are we still doing the wedding and I like that she goes I will not discuss this with you three days left for her visa. And so she has to leave the country and I gotta tell you I would have punched this woman in the face. Yes, because she was not helpful. She was not at all. "You react a certain way and then you become the person in the wrong. You have to be careful with how you react. And i do think jia had a point if i wasn't doing coke. In new bathroom i wouldn't riled up about. It should be like tell it go. Scratch go apologize to her because now you little crazy on camera and now i'm going to create crazy to me. Cherise looks like a reasonable mother. I mean listen. Let's let's get full context in case you're not watching theresa did say the whole reason the started was because theresa saying that jacky's husband was cheating on her. Yes you heard a rumor. So of course. That's not nice to say on camera either. But i feel as though here on real housewives marriages husbands those kind of rumors. That's what fleas into the show. You expect that kind of stuff if you don't have sort of marital drama happening with somebody on the show that what is the show. Research was going through the same thing. A few seasons back when people were saying joe was cheating on her because he took that phone call in the vineyard to reset reacted the same way. So you can't say hey. I can't believe you react to that way. When she was like pulling out the kids ask you cannot bring the kids into but when the kid turns around obviously eight mom. I'm not guilty of it. You need to apologize. So maybe there's there. There is a point to it but no i don't think she i think she reacted like any mother. What about you if it was your son. I mean fast forward and your sons go right there out of a signal cow like this pillow would have come right for my to know what a pillow that even if your son was like mom please isn't a son. A lot of reservations don't have quality roads so people can at least go get potable water and water for their crops and water for their animals that falls under a transportation which is also part of infrastructure in my opinion so this next article gives me some hope for native country native resume for reservations natives and indian country. Getting back to the pre-pandemic economy
"Know what this economies like right now right shaky in many parts uneven who is recovering and who's not uncertain for both people and businesses so the forecast we got yesterday from the congressional budget office. It's guesses for this year. Promising even without more federal relief we're on track for the economy to be roughly back where it was in the before times by the middle of this year. Thank you vaccines. The labor market is gonna take longer. But let's examine that baseline concept for a second here the idea of getting back to the pre pandemic economy because as marketplace's kimberly adams reports even if the numbers do get back to where they used to be the economy's probably gonna look real different even though gross domestic product can kinda be shorthand for how an economy is doing. Gdp growth does not translate into equal growth off earnings and employment ariane hege issues with the institute for women's policy research. She says the before times or kind of a perfect example of this unemployment was low but often significantly higher for some groups like black and latino ex-workers also and not of women worked in jobs. Where you even with full time year round working. You could not pick yourself. You still needed to snap benefits particularly if you have kids then came. The pandemic worthy economic fallout was far worse for women and people of color particularly in the service sector. Emily knicks teaches labor economics. At the usc marshall school of business and says all this will shape. What the recovery looks like. If you come from a wealthier background you bounce back a lot faster than if you come from a poor background and so another concern we might have is that this pandemic is going to increase income inequality this same logic applies for small businesses. I think we need to define what is normal cherise. Conan johnson is a managing partner at the advisory firm neck. So maybe she's like Mom do it for a little while. But now we're like more platonic. I'm just in shock over her like Ellen DeGeneres ask real estate portfolio. Yeah that shocked me as well. Like these are homes to they're not like it's only got talent like she has like a timeshare like she has Mansions. Yeah. I'm like the bigot like I didn't I guess I also didn't really realize how huge her Salt lake house was until kind of Whitney was standing at the front door. And then I just saw like off the proportions of the doors in comparison to like Whitney's body and I was just like wow, this is a massive Mansion massive. Mary's just raking it in she tells her husband they have like another like pilate plot accelerant conversation where she complains about not being invited to I was like, how did she find out some fast which is like funny but she's like, yeah, Jen did not invite me to Cherise party and her husband's like, oh, well, they're just jealous of years and like all this stuff and Mary starts to cry because jealousy is a cruel mistress. And Mary says she feels like all the girls took Jen side over her side and she feels ganged up on and left out. Well, and I'm like money when you marry or Grandpa, it's going to be like that, but you should really Lobby for your own show. Yeah, and also not for long. Someone messaged me that home and told me that Mary said recently that she's never seen an episode of the show and she just like doesn't have them and I wonder if like her I wonder if she's told like if her church members have watched or if she tells them not to watch or if they have like watched parties and they're like go girl. Oh, they don't really I don't think there. Autoliv are watching. I don't think Mary maybe just even let them watch t yeah, I'm at like the I think Mary is like I love how I love the element of Chaos, she brings just on a on a viewer point but I I am fully convinced that this this is a very like there she and her husband are like dark people like that. They're they have like a there like a cult people. You know, what just kind of hit me in regards to maybe why the show hasn't been hitting as hard is that premiering during like a pancake where you can't go anywhere or like venture to a place where any of these women are hm. I think kind of brings your boner for these shows down a little bit cuz like I was just thinking I would love to go to Mary's church and just check it out and see what's up and like probably people if we were just normal times people would be like going to Mary's Church. I'm sure they're still going and what like tourists and stuff would be. Oh, oh, yeah, like I would want to go to Salt Lake and like go to Sundance go to Ali song. Hello. Yeah event. And then like have like a Sunday service at Mary's Church and have like a roll took weekend where you can't do that. So it's just like what I am I watching also the shows from two years ago..

Robin didn't really say too much because it's very interesting. Robin was also at the table at the baby shower because the people who went to the baby shower was candidates. Robin and giselle from the cast. I don't think she reasons they're kinda don't remember it's inconsequential because she's not a full-time or friend of the show. She's a friend of people off the show but she's not a friend of cause they ain't giving no contract. I have a feeling i. I'm pretty sure i feel like now. Shrieks may get a contract for season six. Because you talked about. Y'all talked about her way too much this season for not to be there and maybe that's a little easter egg there. My it's like they bring shrieks back girl. It's so weird with chris. Because y'all know we all know the purpose of the reunion to discuss what happened when the show was shown to the public. Chris samuels decided to use this as the stage for his confrontation of the people. Who tried to hurt his family. I chris is not here so you need to take this up with her. So here's the deal for everybody. Who doesn't know. There was a conversation about the rumors that were going around about. Monique after andy's baby shower in january of two thousand nine nineteen sometime after january twenty nineteen. Monique found out that there was a discussion of the rumors because candidates said she told monique but she didn't. She told karen who told monique. And then said okay. "Thanks for doing this guys for the last couple of weeks I have been thinking about what role I. wanted the show to play in terms of the dialogue that's happening. With this and I thought it was better than me. Sort of giving voice to it myself that it be a much better to have a dialogue with people is one of the things. I was realizing over the last two weeks outside of my own house. Old I really haven't discussed this stuff in. You know my wife and I have talked about how `bout it, but I really hadn't. Beyond that really. Considered? What kind of conversations I? I would want to have with people outside of my own home. My own faith and I think it is important dialogue to have especially. Amongst photographers photography are actually documenting. What's happening right now, but it will also lived the experience of being. Covering this. Just, just briefly I I experienced the LA riots back in I think it was ninety to ninety one. And one of the things and I grew up in that neighborhood I grow near arts in Normandy probably about two miles. My family's home is is there. And one of the things that I remember very vividly. Besides all the cast that was happening is the presence of a lot of photographers in those communities. Not just the photo journalist, but a lot of people who were just photographing independently. One of the things that really bothered me about that. Is that a lot of those people had never come to the community photographic before. That, many of them would not come back afterwards. And then later on when I would look at portfolios. like six months to a year later I would see images. That were made during the riot. But they were without any sort of context or any sort of greater egg relation of what had happened what led to those events happening? Changing and that's spurred me to work on a project. That I've been working on now for thirty years on downtown Los Angeles largely because I felt like at the time. This is years before it became what it is now in terms of gentrification, but it was a part of Los Angeles I had grown up in and I felt that had been dismissed to a great degree and I just wanted to. Use My camera to sort of illustrate. What I felt was beautiful, interesting about a part of Los Angeles that was fiving and important to a minority community here in Los Angeles now it's become gentrified in now. It's completely at very very different thing, but as I see the events of the last couple of weeks, I have thought very much the same thing. You're saying all these people going out and making photographs. And I just felt like you know us as photographers regardless of race. We have to think about. Not just the kinds of pictures that we make, but those pictures are intended for. And the impact it can have especially if those of us who are out there. Making photographs are not working journalists and I just wanted to have a dialogue with both of you. Because you guys are both working photographers on the east, coast. Photographing these events and Photographing. Events. Not only American society with Black Cultural Society before going to continue doing this. And I just to hear I your own personal. How you are both Alliott. Both are personally experiencing these events. And then we can get into much greater conversation in terms of the role of photography now and going forward, cherise, I think you can take since you've actually been out in a failed. Covering summit is now well I have to say first and foremost as a black woman have a personal stake in experience with what's going on. I have my personal stories of you know experiencing racism. I can remember as far back as I was in third grade. The was third grade when I I was called a nigger. From there I became more aware of that in. It has carried through to the woman. I am today. I've had experiences of being stopped. While driving my car in questioned, whose car is this where you going? Where do you live, you know? At broke. No Laws I've had experiences of male male family members and friends who have had violent interactions so having that personal story it gives me a perspective when I go in and I'm actually covering the current the current things that are going on now with the protest in the demonstrations that are happening all over. ME. What I will say is this time it feels different of cupboard, protests and things before, but this time it feels like the youth are really what what I've seen. What I've noticed is the youth are more engaged in their on fire in their serious You can see that there are so many young people out there. In their organized they have an agenda. They have action items. And they're calling for certain things to be done or they will continue. With the protests with the work that feels very different, because it's a stronger a stronger voice now the other thing I'm seeing that's different out there are. There are more white people out there this time. Whereas before it was mostly black, people who were calling you know saying. Stop doing this to me. And calling for change now you have white youth who were out there as well as I saw other people, too, but like I said it's been mostly like a younger movement in terms of who are really out there in the numbers with them. Having what experience yesterday was. They have printed out their agenda and these action items in. They've given it to their legislative representatives. They're calling them. They're following up, so that's been probably like the biggest thing I've seen. Is that the youth are more engaged which. May Have Time In. They're not giving up in there, not scared That's the other thing you know. They're not scared to voice the problems that they see. They're not. To demand for these changes. This time around of being closer to home and I've been watching. Some of my friends out. There believe covering this protest top to bottom in light was such a high level of qualities amazing. Is One of those things where. Fast, forward, twenty thirty forty years and twenty twenty is in the history books. Would be proud to say that I know a lot of top officials. Who when documenting this time in history? So I've been close to home, you know I have a five year old son, and for me. The question of should I be out there? Covering this or should I be here covering my son? and. That's been a big question mark throughout the last week and a half when. The protests began and last night was the first night that. You know told my wife I'm going to go out there. It will fuel events happening in picked when I was close to home in. Backed up mcgeer? Wait now and by the time I got is the crowd had already dispersed. I was online trying to figure out if there was something else happening now close enough that I can get to. And the social media feeds had updated at that time so I, just said all right. Let me just go home. When I got home I started. Seeing all feeds, update and I just. decided to stay home, but you know my wife was. Worried rightfully so I would have been choosing to go out after the curfew. Dowse set in New York, which means that. Just, walk into my car I. could have just been arrested. Just welcome to the car or driving Cardin I'm seeing footage of police officers. Yanking people out of the car the after curfew, so those are the things that you ought. To Take into consideration and you know I. didn't grow was father's radio home so the last thing I wanna do is put myself in this situation where I'm not at home for my son so. I do know that they are the ways that we can be protesting that we can't be revolutionizing. You know it's not just a one-size-fits-all type of situation you know on. We can revolutionize by reading informing ourselves equipment ourselves with enough knowledge and information today. The was not pulled over is anymore. Re can right you know contribute with words you know. I'm seeing a lot of photographers being jerked around with the licensing so so so bringing awareness to how can properly get business stuff to together Sodano? Getting jerked and we get the proper value for all photos does a lot of different ways that we can contribute to this protest without being in front

Protect your time and your temper visit organ dot com to say fifty dollars on your first mosquito service with the promo code brain. Organ home is where the bugs aren't. Welcome to brain stuff. Production of iheartradio. Hey, bring stuff Lauren Vogel, bomb hair. Oil changes are just one of many minor hassles of car ownership, but they're crucial to keeping your car in good shape. Furthermore, if your car carries a warranty, not changing your oil on time and with the proper products could void that warranty. However experts now say that the standard oil change interval of every three months or every three thousand miles. That's about five thousand kilometers is old news and the most cars can travel quite a bit farther before needing their oil replaced. If you're changing your oil more frequently than necessary, it won't help your car. It doesn't harm it either. But you're wasting money time and resources after all throwing way oil that's still usable. But to strain on the environment. There are four main recommended intervals for oil changes based on b-actor specific to you and your car number one under some circumstances. Experts recommend changing your oil every one thousand miles that sixteen hundred kilometers or every six months. I know I know if some experts say that three thousand miles to often, why would those same experts recommend intervals of every one thousand miles. It all depends on your driving habits. If you're driving routine consists, mostly of trips that are ten miles or less. You should consider changing your oil more often than every three thousand miles for two reasons if you aren't making long trips at high study speeds like you would on a highway then your engine isn't getting hot enough to boil off condensation can accumulate in the system that can cause oil to break down faster, most of the wear and tear on your engine occurs. When you're starting your car, and if you aren't driving very far most of your driving is of the type that's very hard on your engine. More frequent oil changes will help minimize that damage. In short. If you drive your car, infrequently as in much less than the mileage of your recommended service, interval you should still change your oil twice a year since the oil degrades over time. Interval number two that old standard three thousand miles or five thousand kilometers or every three months. Some car experts suggest that the three thousand mile interval is really for the benefit of the shops that change the oil since the more frequently you come in the more money, they make still if you have an older model car that recommends this interval you're probably better off adhering to it. Meanwhile, most modern car owners manuals actually recommend longer intervals every five thousand seventy five hundred miles. That's about eight thousand twelve thousand kilometers. However, some manufacturers recommend you also take your driving style and habits into account. For instance, if your car is fairly new, and you usually drive twenty minutes or more and chief fairly steady speeds as opposed to stop and go traffic the entire drive. You are a prime candidate for less frequent oil changes. However, if your car is older it's best to stick. With the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule, in some cases, experts recommend going as long as ten thousand to fifteen thousand miles that's sixteen thousand to twenty four thousand kilometers or every six months, that's in cases, where your car's manufacturer recommends synthetic oil or if you decide to make the switch those synthetic oil is much more expensive than regular oil. It has more benefits. It's better for the environment and can perform better than regular oil. That's because synthetic oil doesn't break down like regular oil. Oil synthetic oil can also with stand more extreme temperatures it won't break down in a hot engine or during hot weather in winter synthetic oil can resist the effects of cold, which means it will start flowing as soon as you start your car. Opinions differ, though about whether upgrading is worth it. While some experts suggest doing it in most circumstances consumer report says that generally you shouldn't switch synthetic if your car doesn't need it. If you frequently tow heavy loads synthetic oil can help ease the extra strain on your engine. If you own a model known to be prone to sludge issues that is what your engine gets clogged with the residue of degraded oil synthetic can help alleviate those problems and prolong the life of your engine. It's best to keep track of the miles. You drive between oil changes, though, some cars make this easier with a dashboard indicator the tells you it's time to head to the shop as part of what's called an oil life monitoring system these systems track your mileage and also use data from your driving. That's analyzed by your car's computer to determine when your car needs an oil change when the light illuminates it's best to get the oil changed as soon as possible, but it's not necessarily urgent. If your car has an oil life monitoring system note that this light is different than your oil pressure light which eliminates on your dash if your cars. Well, isn't flowing properly due to low level failing oil pump a leak in the system or some other issue. Check your owner's manual to learn the difference between the two dash lights because of the oil pressure like comes on you need to stop driving as soon as possible to avoid engine damage. Get in the habit of checking your oil at least once a month to ensure your car's not leaking or burning oil if the level is low at oil, a good oil should be a transparent Brown black color. If the oil is murky or Paik, it might be time for change. And it's milky your engine may be leaking coolant. However, if your car has one of the aforementioned oil monitoring systems, you might not have dipstick to check the oil with. The moral of the story here is that if you don't know how often to change your oil or how to check it between oil changes consult your owner's manual. These habits will help ensure the longevity of your engine. Could California Get an Autobahn?
"Today's episode was brought to you by the new Capital One saver card with which you can earn four percent cashback on dining and entertainment. That means four percent on checking out that new restaurant everyone's talking about and four percent on watching your team win at home. You'll also earn two percent cashback at grocery stores and one percent on all other purchases. Now when you go out you cash in what's in your wallet? Welcome to brain stuff from how stuff works. Hey, brain stuff, Lauren Bogle bomb here. Germany is known for several awesome things including veer brats. And of course, the autobahn bundles Audubon as it's known in Germany is really just if federal highway system there, but to visitors the allure of the autobahn is the speed limit or lack of one cars can top two hundred forty kilometers per hour during normal conditions on this famed freeway that's about one hundred fifty miles per hour. And now, a California legislator is proposing. A Bill that could make the state home to what is being called the American autobahn John Morlock, the Republican state Senator from Orange County introduced state Bill three nineteen in February of two thousand nineteen to relieve traffic congestion along interstate five and state route ninety nine according to the proposed plan both roadways would get new lanes. One northbound and one southbound drivers in the new lanes would not have to abide by a speed limit though, the existing sixty five miles per hour. Limit would remain in effect in the. The existing lanes that's about one hundred and five kilometers per hour. The idea also could provide an alternative California's controversial long-delayed and possibly canceled high speed rail project the proposal comes on the heels of California governor Gavin Newsom announcement that the bullet train as planned is too expensive at an estimated cost of seventy seven billion dollars and would take too long to build. There are no official cost estimates for the Audubon Bill, but in February Senator Morlock told the Los Angeles Times it could cost about three billion dollars. He also said the money would come from the states cap and trade program which requires companies to offset pollution by purchasing credits. If plans move forward the American auto Bahn would be constructed along major freeways with Bela Bach area, which is about eighty miles or one hundred twenty nine kilometers north of Los Angeles at the southern point in Sacramento or Stockton. At the northern end that means theoretically vehicles travelling north at one hundred miles per hour. In the unrestricted lane could make the trip from Sacramento. Tila Beck in about three hours coin that Dr takes over four hours well over depending on traffic. Aside from improving drive times for those along that route the authors of the Bill claim it would also help reduce congestion, which would in turn decrease greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles stuck idling for that reason. The Bill specifies that funding should come from California's greenhouse gas reduction fund which regularly supports transportation and transit projects that reduce pollution. Critics point out. However, the missions go up at high speeds, so encouraging people to drive faster means there wouldn't be any net reduction in pollution, in fact, Bill maga- Vern a spokesperson for the coalition for clean air told SF gate that the net reduction in emissions theory is ridiculous. In addition to the pollution, concerns. Critics are also worried about the risks. To drivers Maureen vocal a spokeswoman for the national safety council told USA today that numerous studies demonstrate that Wednesday's raised speed limits. They can expect an increase in traffic fatalities statistics from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that in two thousand seventeen speeding was a factor. In twenty six percent of all traffic fatalities that accounts for nearly ten thousand deaths. Several states across the US have increased speed limits. For instance, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and Wyoming allow drivers to travel eighty miles per hour on certain highways and Texas allows eighty-five miles per hour along a specific stretch of state highway one thirty that's up to about one hundred and thirty seven kilometers per hour. However, the current maximum speed limit in California is still seventy miles per hour about one hundred thirteen kilometers per hour. With some stretches along the proposed Audubon. Route a little bit lower. Californian's shouldn't get too excited. Though, yet the Bill has a long way before ever becoming law and may never get there. If it passes the vote in the states house and Senate it must then be approved by governor Newsom. For contrast Germany's autobahn covers seven thousand five hundred miles. That's about twelve thousand kilometers, and there are some sections with speed limits. New drivers in Germany are actually trained on the autobahn to learn how to handle the high speeds and the country's licensing process. A lot more difficult time consuming and expensive than it is in the United States if California's autobahn gets approved this three hundred some mile stretch of road might only be a start to a larger system. Americas heartland issues referendum on Trump
"Today. We're bringing you a story from America's heartland the midwestern state of Kansas US voters will head to the polls tomorrow for the highly anticipated midterm elections. And there are a number of battleground races to watch one of them being Kansas third congressional district. What's happening? There is happening in a lot of places across the US many traditional Republicans. Suburban voters are rejecting politicians who've align themselves with President Trump, and in some cases, the rallying behind non traditional candidates as a sort of referendum on the president's policies. The F T Jennifer Siegel spoke with data journalists Brooke FOX who's been covering this race. Br grew up in Kansas near the district and last month. She went back to talk to voters. So Brooke tell me about Kansas City for someone who's never been there. What do they need to know about this district? So the city sits on the border of Kansas and Missouri. The third congressional district in Kansas City is mostly made up of the suburbs of the city. It's pretty well known in the area as being more affluent district, although it does include more urban less affluent areas as well, but on the whole UC higher levels of income higher levels of education than you would see in other districts in the state a lot of people that currently live in Kansas City, generally have family roots somewhere in farming. And a lot of them have moved to the city as a result of job opportunity there that is in more the professional in management industry versus in the agriculture industry, and give us a sense of the political landscape there. What is voter registration look like in this district. It's pretty close to being split down the middle. Slightly more majority to Republican side. This district is not Representative of the rest of the state because the rest of the state represents more rural districts. This district is Representative of what you find it other suburban districts around the country, so areas close to big cities. I think off hand counted maybe five or six suburban districts where you're seeing a democratic challenger outpolling, a Republican incumbent, and that's that is happening across the country, not necessarily just in Kansas. Right. And we seem to be seeing a trend where Republicans who have historically been in safer seats are facing competitive challengers on the left, but let's talk about the key race in this district. It's four seat in the house of representatives told me about the candidates, so Kevin Yoder. This is his fifth time running to be a congressman for this district. And he is pretty well known for being a budget guy. He's fairly moderate compared with other Republicans, and he is facing. A very strong challenge from a woman named cherise David's she's lesbian. She's a native American woman, and she's also a former professional MMA fighter. So she sort of a surprising candidate she's never run for office before, but she did work as a fellow in the White House in the department of transportation. So she does have some political experience in her background. So you talked to quite a few voters in this district. One of them was a man named Steve rose, and he's pretty frustrated with Kevin Yoder, the incumbent tell me a little bit more about Steve. And what he told you Steve rose is a columnist in the Kansas City area who has voted for Kevin every time he's run in the past. But this year, he's frustrated because he thinks that the congressman is voting too closely aligned with Donald Trump's policies, and that that's not reflective of what the district wants. And here we used to be. It's no longer Maher is now Trump junior more he's inset with Trump the more. He's also with is this for Steve rose told me that there's nothing that Kevin Yoder has really done to merit a frustrated public that what they're frustrated with his Donald Trump and the more closely. He is viewed as being aligned with him is where he he's going to run into trouble. So voters there seemed to be issuing a sort of referendum on the president. I put the referendum question to several people in the district. And they all emphatically said, yes, this is a referendum on the president and this idea of a referendum. What's the driving force behind it? I did talk to quite a few people who are moderate Republicans themselves. And a lot of them are switching party lines to vote for the democrat. They just like to see someone stand up to Donald Trump, essentially don't think that Donald Trump necessary. Appeals to a lot of these more centrist voters in the suburban districts.

I'm Jefferson Graham with USA today. You're listening to talking tech. And we've got Sharon Jones who covers retail for USA day to tell us all about what WalMart has in store for the holiday season is the most lucrative time of year for retailers, and they're all kind of pulling out all the stops to get every last customer. So this holiday season, WalMart is going to enable folks who have their app to basically tap into it. And then put in whatever item, you're looking for sweater, a toy a television monitor and it's going to tell you. Where exactly in the store, you can go to find it. And then once you get there I to make your purchase instead of standing in line for thirty minutes. So the whole point is to kind of make shopping as seamless as possible to get you to come to their store and not to their rivals. And you're seeing a lot of that this holiday season. You're gonna pay for it through the app, and then you can walk out with your basket and go about your business without ever having to interface with an employee or lose timing your day because she was standing in line. Line for an hour. Cherise? How do you think this is going to do? I think it's going to be, you know, probably very successful. I mean, I think that, you know, one of the things that stores sore chains like WalMart and target are doing is trying to leverage the stores, right something that Amazon doesn't really have a lot of. And so it's a way to kind of entice you you get out there. And I think that, you know, part of the, you know, the frustration when you're shopping is when you do think at the end of this fund you've had looking at items you've got to wait for a really long time to get out of there. So I think the fact that you're going to be able to find stuff without wandering around. And you're going to have someone that can check you out. Right where you are is going to be really appealing especially because during the holiday season people are very pressed for time. Alright the holiday shopping rush is just a few weeks away.
