"Talked to this guy from my heart and within 5 minutes, I got this big gun belt on. I'm about 5 three right in this guy's like 6, 6, and he's balling, you know? And I'm holding this guy with this big gun belt on and everything. And he was just an incredible paint and that's what I started realizing we deal with is misplaced anger because people are incredible pain. So I ran into him three days later and a little store on Willy street where I lived at the time in the sky comes he sees me off duty, picks me up, gives me this big bear hug and said you saved my life that night. Thank you. And so when you have experiences like that and you start to realize, well, what am I doing different here? I mean, really, it's about softening your heart. When you're a police officer and you do this work, you need to find a way to be able to maintain both the compassionate bodhisattva within you and the fierce bodhisattva and know when each is called for and how to combine the two. And once you start down this path, it's possible to learn that. And that was the beginning for me. It was very powerful. Very wonderful. And have you been able to maintain that? Now, this has been 12 years or something, right? 12 years. Well, in the beginning, it wasn't strong enough for me, so it would sort of come and go and still experience these incredible waves. But once you've experienced it, you know you can come back to it. So that first retreat gave me great hope and great faith. In my ability to come back to the present moment and nourish myself in the present moment and be in the present moment. So no, I couldn't always maintain it. But as my practice got stronger, it got easier. And then I started moving through the rings at the time I went to the retreat. I can't remember if I was a police officer or a sergeant, but eventually it got pretty important to me to find a song of practice community because I was pretty much doing this individually. And then I started being able to extend it in other ways. Okay, how can I build how can I build a song go within my police department? How can I make this a family? How can I, how can I start thinking about building a place where I get to be who I want to be? Because they're being who they want to be, where we all support each other and doing that. How can I build an organism within the police department where each police officer when they're alone where nobody's looking represents all of us in a way that we'd feel really good about? And so of course I can't talk like this in the police department. I have to translate the language, but I've been a cop for almost 20 years, so I can do that. And now I'm the captain of personnel and training. So my job is a higher everybody for the Madison police department. I train everybody. I'm in charge of recruiting, hiring the pre service academy in service training. So I'm now at a position where I get to do just about everything I want. So I get a lot of opportunities to do this and to combine the way I would talk about it is look, we need certain we don't lose police officers, tactically, we've gotten very good at with our equipment, our technology and our training in terms of from 1950, we've on we, the fewer and fewer police officers have been killed in the line of duty where we're losing people is emotionally. But I gave tie those statistics. I mean, there are two to three times as many officers killing themselves now as I being killed in the line of duty. And from a training perspective, and a risk perspective, if it's preventable, I mean, if it's predictable, it's preventable. So I started thinking about how to move some training resources to emotional areas. And I certainly don't talk about, but I do, I actually have taught 38 officers a practice of mindfulness in terms of eating, sitting and walking meditation. Some people who I thought would never be interested. As one of several tools available to them to deal with the stress in their lives in the emotional and biological roller coaster of being a police officer. I mean, we deal with people that there is somebody once said at their maddest saddest and baddest. And if you can't find a way to take care of yourself, you're just going to keep responding to the energy that's coming at you and escalate it. Have you seen that help other police officers as well? I think other police officers that understand that this work has to be done from your heart that it doesn't mean you give up being tough. It doesn't mean you give up your ability to protect people, your ability to go hands on when you need to, but you do it from a place of awareness and softness and compassion are the people that are happy is doing their jobs and the ones that enjoy it the most. They're the ones that don't shut down and the ones we don't lose. So from an organizational standpoint it is a very important message to in a very important thing to support in fellow officers. Did you have a hand in making this retreat happen? Is that right? This retreat was pretty much came about as when I decided to take my practice further in about 2000 I really got much more committed. So I'd been practicing for 9 years. And then I decided I wanted to become a member of the order, a core member of the order, and receive the 14 mindfulness training. So I spent a year getting ready for that and studying with one of the local Dharma teachers and declaring my intention and then I went out to plum village last year. For three weeks, which was probably one of the most wonderful three weeks of my entire life. And I hadn't realized how much healing I still had to do. As a police officer yourself and a victim and so often in a presser. You know, you really have to come to grips with both of those, but it occurred to me when I was out there because it was so healing for me. To be out there. And I wrote a letter to Thai and put it in the bell because when you want to receive the mindfulness training, that's one of the requirements to receive the 14 and become a core member..

"Do of course. There is the possibility that these letters were written by. Zajac petit was not the manager. He could simply have been laying climb to the mid perhaps used it as inspiration for his own series of killings. Starting three years later there are several zajac suspects. He had connection to riverside. And i said to have lived in the area. At the time of sheri's murder. This episode will not provide an in depth analysis of entice zajac case but will briefly focus on a few of the suspects. You have links. With the town of riverside. Thelhi allen. I came to the public's attention involved at christmas book. Say jack there in that work. He was known by the alias. Bob who star he had been on the police radar in the case since the early nineteen seventies for many law enforcement. He was the main suspect he probably the maxwell known zodiac suspect. Partly because of the two thousand seven. David fincher film based on gray smith book. He was a foam a teacher who had been convicted of molesting his students. He was single and lived alone in a trailer. Allen can be linked to several zodiac crime scenes he also will zajac brand watch and had the same wing will camilla cheap rates as the zodiac kayla is said to have wound he said posted to a friend about the idea of killing people and using the alias so jack to commit these crimes several years before the attacks started michael maggio. He survived an attack by zodiac later. Pick tact allen's photographs as the man he shot him. That must be set. This was over twenty years off to attack shortly before allen died of cancer in nineteen ninety-two. The police obtained a warrant to search the trailer where he resided police. Fan pipebombs and other suspicious items in the training but nothing that could actually tie him to the zodiac killings. There are numerous pieces of circumstantial. Evidence put forward to support allen as the zodiac killer. Which could take up several episodes of this podcast What is important to note is the allens. Handwriting was not matched to the latest album. Was dexterous sit. Both hands tested and his finger and palmprints did not match those taken from the lake. Various sir attack allen's dna was also found not to match a sample believed to be from this idea killer. Alan also looks nothing like the famous police. Sketch of zodiac in terms of allen's linked to riverside and the chevy joe bates mid. It's his roommate that he was in the town over the weekend that sherry was killed. The apparently he laid to claim to have been in pomona instead when he hid Allen only took one sick day in one thousand nine hundred sixty six and it was the first of november. The day off the sherry was found. There is nothing that directly ties are to sherry or the river city. College campus library. Oh the actual murder the next potential. Jack suspect with links to riverside seems. He's t names interchangeably richard or rick. Marshall i became a suspect in nineteen seventy six after self-incriminating comments he made to friends reported to authorities. Rick mall show as we will refer to him with the ham radio. Enthusiast made these comments of the i. Ways and allegedly at his house that's a gathering of fellow radio hobbyists brick marshall Projectionist time if the zajac And later a radio engineer he lived in riverside during the mid nineteen sixties but it is unknown if he was still there when cherrie was murdered like awfully allen. There's any circumstantial evidence linking him to the killings. He's nine to have had similar typewriter to that used in some of the lattice. He was nine half a house with the basement. Something that is incumbent in the san francisco area but that the dak made reference to also having marsha was av beth and his favorite film is the red phantom. I've found that is referenced in the one thousand nine hundred seventy four zero jack. Latter he allegedly made the statement to his ham radio. Betty's the tea had fans something. Kurt more excited than sex and quote. His appearance is also somewhat similar to the police sketch of zodiac. Oh this ajax suspects a man by the name froth. Sylvan has by far the strongest links to riverside especially to the city. College campus raw sullivan worked as a library. Assistant in the same campus library sherry visited on the evening of amid a his colleagues library gave his name to the police as they were suspicious of him. They said he was art and made others particularly women feel uncomfortable. They mentioned that he had a pension for poetry and said he was not in work for some days following the murder they also said he always wore a similar outfit to work. But this changed following the mood. Police did follow up on the library staff suspicions but they dismissed ross sullivan as suspect saying he had provided an alibi. Despite this campus library staff were convinced that ross sullivan was involved in cherries murder. I'm voiced suspicions and consents often over. The following years sullivan had bipolar disorder. Possibly the mental illnesses. He spent much of the remainder of his life in an active mental hospitals and it is believed that he died from a heart attack aged. Just thirty six in nineteen seventy seven again much like marshall and alan. All of this is purely substantial when when ross sullivan was not the victim of being judged because of the mental illness he suffered people who live with mental illness still encounter a huge degree of ignorance prejudice and lack of understanding in twenty twenty one. I mean this is such illnesses in the mid nineteen sixties was far less than today. One thing that can't be denied. Is that ross. Sullivan is an absolute dead ringer for the police. Sketch vizo jack suspect and is definitely the main reason he continues to linger as a suspect when recent development concerning ross sullivan as a suspect if decoding of the three fully decipher three forty. Cypher is the second safest set by the jack and so cold because it contained three hundred forty characters. In december twenty twenty team led by. David aron chac and mathematician. Some blake next. The code was finally cracked. The message itself was not particularly informative. It did not divulge any ground breaking information about zajac but when the kite was deciphered collection.

The riverside police came to the conclusion that sherry's murder was not linked to the zodiac crimes. They said there were too many differences between the crimes and they were convinced that the person who killed sherry knew her was part of a life in some way. The connection between the bait case and the zajac canning's was first popularized in the press by san francisco chronicle journalist pool every over the years however avery also distanced himself from the fairy came to the conclusion that they were unrelated crimes that he did think there was a possibility that zodiac may have written the bates confession. "Most nerve wracking part of your cycling processes again is is learning to clip in. I mean we had that zero mph accident. Because we we we could remember our heels out to to disengage and telling leading realize that like even those of us who've been doing it for five or six years still have an accident. What happens if you haven't had an zero malpractice. Does that mean on. Do i often means you're not a cyclist i haven't had a. I know you're not part of the club world to it's coming when you least expect it. I can't wait. It's going to be spectacular too. I dropped the not the no the first time i did. I actually dropped my chain in my that was my wife and my stepson and they didn't realize i had dropped the chain so they just kept going so i had to chase them down like three quarters of down the as they didn't wait for me. You know. I forgot so after. I started doing swift allot wins with was a new thing for me that some are hidden. I feel like it's like. I forgot even though i clicked infra swift. But that's different because you're you're not getting off ever have a light to stop at when i hit the road that summer i took. I forgot that. I can't just sit there with two because the bike stationary. So even if you like. Forget to clip the bike. That's swift accident. There's there's some. I've seen him before. It's kind of funny but you brought up a point about if you see a a man on a climb that you may or may not catch him but it provide you a lot of the encouragement or the or the you know the the carrot to chase to get to the top faster and and it kinda leads me into the next question because one of the things that that. I know that men do that kind of discouraged. Women is always try to outdo women and we have a. There's a really strong writer that joins us. All the time i have affectionately nicknamed her the queen of the mountain because she's got one hundred piece got a tunnel local she crushing. She's her reputation precedes her so she feels like she is pressure to perform every time she gets on the bike. Just ri- we just we like hanging out with your your strong rider and one of the guys that's in our our club hates when she beats him to the top and so he'll like attack just so that she doesn't beat him to the top and it drives her nuts. She's like i'm not going to chase them down but she's like it's just stupid and i'm like i agree like the white rider. Who can who can put out some pretty good power so your your power to weight ratios good like i don't care that you beat me to the top. I'm i've got twice as much body weight as you do. I'm going to have to put out five hundred. Six hundred watts. Sustain did to match you up a climb. it's just. I can't confirm that is the number you have to keep up with. Maria data. the number very strong climber. So i know that's one of the things that we do as men that they kind of discourage more women from joining maybe not necessarily joining cycling but from maybe joining clubs or club rides or group rights. Put your check. I i've seen on group rides with when i've been on group rides that use a lot of times i'm the only woman and there's like six men and i'm sitting trying to stay in that in that pace line so Fallout i'm not gonna make it in. I've seen it happened. Where some other women join. That were used. John writers and if she could keep the Keep going faster. Like all of a sudden. The entire group ride it shifted..

"We wanted to get some perspective on women in cycling. You know obviously nick both males as you might have assumed we want to talk about women in cycling and you know how to improve that relationship because it is. It is a male dominated industry in some ways. But i don't think it should be because you know everybody's input as valuable and that's just kind of how i look at it. But i know you and i started the podcast because we wanted to be a place. That new cyclists could use as a resource. And you know the ultimate goal was to to help grow the number of cyclists around in the you know one of the aspects that i feel that we could. We could do cycling industry. Some good is to to to do our part for some diversity and and with mother's day coming soon wanted to bring a guest on that would be able to provide some insight onto things that may be pulled back from getting in and things that you know frankly Us men do that. We may not even know about that. Are keeping women out of cycling so without further ado. I'd like to welcome live brand ambassador and also one of my team type one teammates sharyo and welcome to the show. Hi welcome. we're glad to have you. I appreciate you coming on. I felt like you would have a very interesting perspective on things. Beings wanna live brand ambassador because that's a a bike brand dedicated to women's cycling the way we kind of unique to being that we've never actually met in person where we've written on a few times and in group rides but i guess to get started tells a little bit about your cycling story. Yes so. I was in my nate in finished. Having my kids i three beautiful children and i wasn't much into the idea of running necessarily on a mind running love doing racing in running events but it wasn't my thing i wanted something that was more less impact but to that could enjoy and my husband had started cycling and he was going out every day just loving it and decided it was time to bike. 'cause i wanted to try it and see what it was like. You do a lot more miles on a bike. Nakano my feet. So we went out bought. My first bike. That was six years ago. I believe and i think i started with about three miles and i thought wow i just wrote three miles l. a. soaked and then my next did eight miles in a leg. Okay this is great and then after that it was fifteen to twenty miles minimum. I just love doing it finding the different routes and enjoyed getting out there just the music that was back before i was clipped at the time it was me just kind of joy writing and learning. You know what. It's like to ride my bike on the road. What was your first bike. We've we've told our first bikes an episode one. What was what was the first bike you purchased and my first bike was a to. I can't remember what your mom your was but it was rally capri. Okay very cool. Do you still have it so it was a full on aluminum bike. It was purple and orange. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. So i actually just recently sold it. I i had a hard time partner with it. That was my swift bike. For a long time that was was retired to s.'s. With bike but with all the vid bison gear that i have now a friend of mine really needed a bike and so i passed it on to somebody else. Who's enjoying it just as much sided. That's awesome yeah. I know my first real bike is is mike annandale mountain bike. That's been converted. And it's got too much.

"Clinton i like going out and doing things with women so i was really excited like i get out and do something that i love and get women involved in so being living brassier was an exciting thing for me to be like twin now since they like. This is what i'm doing because everybody who knows me knows that i love to ride my bike. A huge thing. That you know if i would ask anybody them the number one thing they say. You like to ride bikes. So it's just fun for me to be able to go out and do those things and get other women to like writing. I is just having lunch with a friend of mine yesterday. And she just got it by and she wants to go out and do some writing. She told me you know. She's that'll be on the road in. That's absolutely fine. I'm going to find something else for us to go. Do just as excited as i been to the ground and do that and then It brought on now. I work at the the bike shop. But not because i'm a living basseterre. It's because i wanted to know more about my bike. Like i can ride this thing. But what is what's on it. You know there is a lot that i wanted to learn. I want to be around that limbaugh all the time being at the shop and then women come in and i get talked about riding bikes and get them excited about it certainly awesome. Yeah it's a really set for me to have to be able to do those things you talk. We talked briefly about the geometry differences in the products that that live Live does to grow the women cycling to talk about some of the non equipment based things that they're doing to to get more women involved than cycling in a kind of a tough said his last year obviously with with covert and everything. It's kind of i. It's been kind of a backwards. Step honestly i think trying to get more people involved. A lot of people can't even get a bike right now..

"She's a strong writer. She should beat me to the top or they may hang on her for pacing. But he's the only one. I see that does it. And it's like he's never said anything to anybody but you can. You can tell like actions speak louder than words. Yeah exactly because he passes. I'm going up like he's changing gears and he's now he's now hammering because he can't be dude she's a strong rider. There's group rides or any kind of ride like my favorite thing is to make sure they're decent amount of climb spots. Because that's where i can. If i even get behind i can start to catch up on the climb because i'm the lightweight that's my favorite part in kinda routes that i do on the road is the climbing routes for me to even get home any day on a bike ride. I'm up high. I have to climb no matter what direction i go to get home. This one behind me belmar is what it's called. It's a ten percent eleven percent and it's a good. It's not even that long but takes about three minutes just sitting there just climbing hammering at it but i love the feeling of it when i get to the top like i did it. You know i climbed this thing. That's i think the hardest part to explain to somebody who's a travel writer that wants to convert to road writing but doesn't like the climbing aspect. Is that the accomplishment. Once you get to the top of whatever the climate is i mean in a word. Here in south western. Pa there's not really a flat spot so you're always going up or down and sometimes it's more mild than others. We have roads that are that can be in the twenties irs. What's the one by bike. Lippi is twenty five or twenty eight percent twenty three and a half. So i mean we. We get some sweet. I wanna climb at that feeling of accomplishment that you mentioned when you get to the top. You're like you can't really explain that to someone who's never done it before it's like runner's high rate it. It's this kind of that thing that like once you hit it yet you get it but unless you haven't done it you don't i. You mean runners like want to die because that's runners no surge of natural. What's i don't know medical. Thanks yes that. It's that natural surge after you do something that you're like really happy with yourself and you get to the top and you're like if not never happened to me whilst running ever running running. Yeah i grew up on the ice hockey players. Typically don't like to run. i mean we. We like to bike is pretty decent at it..

"Welcome to pants on. Fire that game show where kids choose between the cheerful and spirited truth and the bad sportsmanship of lies. I'm your host Deborah Gold. Cnn in the studio today is our sound effects about Lisa which stands for live in-studio audience too but not too but that is the question. Pardon me I poured in the lady. Thank you but what is it that you are doing? I'm practicing my lines. I have an audition tomorrow for the robot. Regional Theater production of Hamlet. How that's exciting to thrilling. Indeed but to be honest I am nervous. Oh I really want to be in this play and I've been setting all the lines for weeks. I think you're going to be great and remember this above all to thine own self be true. What is that some sort of fortune cookies saying? No it's a line from no forget it. Why don't you take your mind off your audition and tell us how our game works Shaw Melody? Every ways we bring onto grownups. One is an expert the other ally and it's the job of a human to help us figure out who is too because no one gets about Aligarh better than a kid. I mean we hope right. Otherwise Radha business. What are we lying about today Deborah? We are lying about cheerleading. An activity of organized cheering chanting dancing and sometimes competing with stumps Lisa. Do you know anything about cheerleading. I'm sure had mentioned my great uncle. The electronic scoreboard was installed at a basketball court. I used to go to games and watch him keep score the cheerleaders. Were pretty good but nothing is as exciting as watching your uncle. Flip those numbers. That's real spirit. I I can appreciate that but I think you're going to really feel the spirit when we learn more about cheerleading. Now whatever okay. I say we should find out about our contestants shall we? Who might that be? I know tell us are human child contestant as an eight year old who loves everything about baseball. I'm Talkin every billy leave of it lily are you. I'm good welcome to pass on. We're so happy that you're here. You love everything about baseball. You like watching it or playing it. That's cool duva favorite baseball team. Yes the New York mets. The New York mets and dealer favorite player on the team Noah syndergaard. Mister met. Yeah I was stuffy of him only and I went to high school together. I don't know about that and tells. I hear that there is a forbidden word in your house and it starts with the letter Z. And it is perhaps a vegetable and getting close to something you don't care for Sabre Broccoli might be Zucchini. This is something you do not like correct blab not in any which way not even Zucchini ice cream. Ill Zucchini no. It's kind of fun. So can all right. We'll we want to know some more fun facts about you lilly. But we're GONNA do it the way we do it on pants on fire playing two truths and a lie. Okay so you're gonNA tell us three facts about yourself. Two of those facts will be true. One will be ally and we have to figure out which one is the lie. Are you ready? Yeah Excellent. What are your three facts on so first one is my dreams go to West Point West Point? I know absolutely everything about Harry Potter. Threes my grandparents live in Spain Spain. No not space stain. That'd be fun. Okay what do you think Lisa? Which one of those things is a lie? She said earlier that she knew everything about baseball. Now trying to come back and say she knows everything about Harry Potter. That's like a lot of that. One is the law. That's fair. I think there's one things she doesn't know about. Maybe so lily. Which one of those things is a lie Is My grandparents live Spain? So you're saying you know everything about Harry Potter. Yes okay. Let's see. Do you know what Harry Potter does? Yeah he's a wizard. She does everything she does. Okay Lisa can we get some welcome music? For OUR CHEER EXPERTS. Two four six eight khurda appreciate. I want to hear about it if it's me otherwise I don't talk about it. I just appreciate me. Our first expert is Allison Williams. Allison introduce yourself to Palo Lily. I am a CO owner of an All Star cheerleading program in Brooklyn New York. Pay Thank you very much and our second expert is Gerry mccrae Jerry. Please introduce yourself to lily. Lilly how are you? I'm Cheri and competitive cheer choreographer at Various High Schools in New York and Connecticut and they used to cheerleader twenty Peac University. Two thousand five to two thousand nine go Queenie plus enough. Let's see those are some cheerful sounds? Lisa well I always feel cheerful. It's I'd say time toads. We are going to put our experts on the hot seat while they answered lillies questions Lisa. Who should we put on the hot seat? I Jerry Maguire. Because he's going to show us the money. His name is not Jerry Maguire. But I like your thinking anyway I fine. Blue Okay Lily. What question do you have for Jerry to start? Tell me about what you do. What does a typical day in your job? Look like sure so. I've been hired to come up with competitive cheer routines at various high schools. So I go. I work with the students. I kind of envisioned the whole routine. I teach it to them and we go through all the motions and until we're ready to go. Put it into competitions clue. Yeah that's my job to. That's basically what I do. I see. Allison how did cheerleading become a sport? That's an excellent question. So initially cheerleading began in the UK in the mid eighteen hundreds and then traveled over to the US and at first there were college students who were in the audience watching a football game and the athletes weren't doing well during the football game and so the audience decided that they were going to get together and they were going to encourage their fellow athletes from there the sport grew throughout the US and then officially became competitive sport in the nineteen eighties. It's also spread throughout the entire world since then cool. This is for you. Jerry what would you say is the worst injury seen on the Mat So one time I did see a basket. Toss gone wrong person. Just didn't catch the flyer so she fell down. Hit the person who was on the base that they both kind of hit their head on the ground and Yeah so just to head. Injuries is the worst I saw. Because you know you need your you need your brain to be intact or two. That are they okay. They're they're still with us. That's good yes where I don't see bring them. He said they were with us. It's just an expression that means they're non dead. Humans are obsessed with. Who's alive who is dead going? What are you robots obsessed with? Good question we have you ever had something called Zucchini tuition. So mean Okay Lily. Quick change the subject away from that. Vegeta- this one's for both of you. Can you tell me about the jump? The herkie Chanda Hurricane Joe. Okay who wants to take that question? I'll start okay. So there was a fellow named Lauren Turkey and he founded the NCI the national cheerleading association. And he also invented the pom pom so they named jump after him because everyone loves him and he big in the world of cheerleading. And it's just this fantasy cheerleading jumping with some nice arches in aerials well to add onto that Lawrence her car. The reason why the jump was specific named after him because he attempted to do a split jump and instead bent his leg and as a result he came up with this jump. That did not exist. Which is why was named after him the hurricane.

"Reforming the election process. Or is it more of a power grab for what it's worth, I'm Cheri Preston. What do you think of the idea of getting the day off to vote? It's something that Democrats in congress have proposed. They think it would help get more people to the polls. Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell, not a fan. Bill would make election day. A new paid holiday for government workers and created an additional brand new paid leave benefit for up to six days under the proposal, federal employees would be dispatched to polling places that also helped people who wouldn't necessarily be able to get there. That's what America needs another paid holiday and a bunch of government workers being paid to go out and work. Some are on our colleagues on the other side on their campaigns. The Bill would also require presidential candidates to release their tax returns and compel states to adopt independent redistricting commissions, the Democrats, call it election. US allies, al-Qaida battle rebels in Yemen

"On Iran three months after pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal saying the US policy is to. Lovey maximum economic pressure on the. Country in a statement today he restated his opinion that. The twenty fifteen international accord a freeze Iran's nuclear program in return for lifting sanctions was a. Horrible one-sided deal. The US backed fight against Yemen's Shiite rebels has benefit. Al, Qaeda's branch in the country it's militants are battling alongside and even within units, financed an armed by the Saudi led coalition fighting the rebels a group says those battlegrounds have been a recruiting bonanza moreover how kinda was allowed to pull out, of, multiple strongholds at healthy in Yemen taking with it weapons and cash under secret deals with a coalition according to an AP investigation. KOMO news time now ten forty six singer. And reality TV, personality Jessie James, decker caused a stir over social media post. Where she appears to be, holding an. Alcoholic beverage while breastfeeding her son ABC's Paula, Ferriss spoke with ABC's chief medical correspondent Dr Jennifer Ashton about the risks and you have delivered your share babies hundred and I will admit full disclosure, I, nursed all three of my kids with a glass of wine in my hand because that's what my lactation consultant instructed me to. Do one glass right you're saying so so what's Okay first of all not a lot because again we can't do control studies where we're. Going to be giving breastfeeding or lactating women a lot of alcohol and then testing. It in their breast milk but the thinking here is that as long as the mom does not feel neabry aided or. Buzzed the amount that is passed along to the baby in breast, milk is minimal and that an occasional alcoholic beverage in. A breastfeeding woman will not harm the baby it takes about thirty to sixty minutes for anything that's consumed to go through, the moms blood and pass into breast milk and when. The mom feels better and that's cleared from her blood it's cleared from the breast milk at the same time the other interesting. Thing here in probably the reason you're a lactation consultant recommended it to you is that when mothers tense when skating and by the way it can. Be? Painful it's very exactly I By the way that's right it can actually inhibit the letdown. Reflects so a little bit of alcohol can actually help the letdown, hormone so in in the kind of lactation who wives. Kind of circle a little bit is thought now Ted relaxes the mom and and it allows the no doubt so finally, let's ask you about the notion of pumping and dumping, we had too much Right so normally when we say pump and dump that's with a. Woman who's. Using a breast pump that's for medications. That are actually dangerous or contraindicated or viruses or some kind of. Infection in the mom it doesn't really work as well for alcohol but we have to remember. Any anytime you see anything dealing with a woman's breasts it becomes. Global news, and everyone feels like they can weigh in on what. Happened to Jesse James Are you have to remember is. Yes there, are clear benefits to breastfeeding, both for the mom and the baby but it's not always logistically possible for every, woman and it's not always something that the mom chooses to do so when I council, women, on this, I, say the operative word in breastfeeding is feeding and a woman needs to feed her baby the best way she. Thinks and, the best way for her and everyone else. Needs to stay, in their land ABC's Paula Farris along with Dr Jennifer Ashton a screen time link to poor health and, kids? As we hear from ABC's Dave Schreiber scientific, advisory statement from the American Heart Association says screen time from computers phones tablets video games TV and other devices is connected to more sedentary behavior in children. And teams that can lead to poor cardiovascular, health and obesity though there's no clear link to poor health researchers are concerned eating, behaviors could be affected with kids not noticing when they're full while eating in front of a.
