"This was because they wanted to film in new york. They had to film in new york. They couldn't use a set. It wouldn't look real. And the more boston york at the time was geico joe colombo senior and he basically said to the producer albert ready. Okay you can't mention the mafia because the mafia doesn't exist me we don't there's not a thing and you're just going to give italian immigrants a bad name. This was while he was running the head of one of the biggest gangs in new york. So he said don't mention the mafia and also we want all the proceeds from film. Just the print. Yeah we don't get them something back terrible it works. It works ready. He actually promised all the premier proceeds go an awfully. These studio then went back on that promise which must have been a terrifying moment for ready when they said we're not actually gonna pay them him. Getting okay oh what's gonna happen to me but says we no longer need die for the red carpet is just gonna be naturally read. Actually the thing. I love about the book as well. Is that puzo. Wrote it from research didn't own gangsters but he met gangsters through the success of the book. Who flat out refuse to believe that he'd never been a gangster himself and then maffeo see themselves. They started doing cheek-to-cheek kisses based on the movie. Let no one cord each other. Godfather before visited and then it became a mafia term the mafia basically a tribute eggs to novel the godfather these days and if they've heard this on the urine serious trouble lazy something else that came up in his book which didn't make it in. Did you go through this. You will read it shop wreck. This is the subplot about connie's so connie the wedding at the start made on lucy man cheney house for jonah. That's too big. Yeah absolutely bizarre. She's going out with sunny. If you remember the character sunny but he can go out with her and it works because he's quite well endowed and then he doesn't lost the first film even and i think she struggles. And that's i forgot about that until you just said and now of course the memories of how i felt reading that of coming flooding back to me and i'm thinking perhaps i was probably too young to read that book because she was she was gorgeous woman. She's described as the gorgeous beijing. This big fucking funny. It was so graphic it was at the cow. Ski stuff graphing. How funny as bloke. He sat down and he created this character of that needed. Any female author is at once down. Women is written the soap look relevant to the story line. He doesn't have people. Frankly really you know how his publisher read. The previous book exploded that tiny mafia character and went to a whole book about that. I really hope that character. That big fanny lady. That's.

"It's such a kick ass deal. It's all right all of the show on with the show. Okay it's time for final factor. The show and that is an knife act this week. Is that the character of dawn. Kolio ni in the novel. The godfather was based on the author's mother. Which is great because code for the small and brenda so it's completely different character but this is the guy who wrote the book. Mario puzo said that he never met a gangster. A lot of people assumed because it was kind of such a real portrayal that he'd been embedded in gang life years never met gangster and so he said whenever the godfather opened his mouth in my books in my own mind. I heard the voice of my mother. And he described mother's the wisdom the ruthlessness at the unconquerable love for her family and for life itself but his mother he was from an italian immigrant family and lived in new york and his father was committed for schizophrenia. A quite early on in his life so his mother raised seven children on her own and was clearly this another formidable woman the side that he relates as his mother being similar to is things like when the father was committed to the asylum he could have returned but the mother made the decision not to let him out. Who's oh said that. She thought he'd be a burden on the family and he says that's very mafia decision that she was like no keep him away. Puzo also said that when ever he heard brando speak the lines he could hear his mother's voice. It's mom again so like propylaea even in the interpretation of it. Yeah okay the other really. Really weird thing about mario puzo. The godfather was the second novel he wrote. Based on his mother he wrote one called the fortunate pilgrim. That was his second book and the main character and that is the woman could Lucia santa and he said she is based on his mother's well. there's a publisher who read The fortunate pilgrim and said look. Didn't we love the book. But that one tiny gangster character that was good. Didn't you could expand that. And he went away in the godfather because if the amazing thing was just how successful it was because his first two novels in total earned him six thousand five hundred dollars so his lifetime owning from books at that point with six. And a half thousand. I'm so glad things have changed with burks. It was really interesting his career because he had ridden these failed novels and he desperately wanted to be an author and it was only into his forties that he then started writing the godfather and that's where his life changed and he knew that this was the loss of tampa. And if if it didn't work he was going to do something else and he tried to work for other people. He worked for stanley at one point. When stanley was doing comic books and he he was almost a comic book writer but he just couldn't make it work. We we could have had mario puzo spiderman. I'm happy with mario puzo godfather. I'll stick to that yeah. I don't think being bitten by a radioactive horse is we did have mario puzo superman. Because he's the screenwriter. Behind superman and superman too with christopher reeve how cool but there's this great story that when he was writing screenplays post godfather one and two he sort of got anxiety realizing i'm an author of adapted my books into being screenplays. But i don't really know how to do this. So he bought a book on screenwriting and he said he had to stop reading it. Because in the first chapter the book said study godfather one model screenplay shepherd with your novel because he's used characters from we're alive in the latest one kissing emma or any family members going to look at that and go hang on. No i've written two novels and absolutely none of my characters or events have been based on any persons in real life. Why are you reading off code. No of course i have. What is it they say. And when there's a writer in the family there's a traitor couch there's a there's a really grim part in the in in puzo books that didn't make the film that i read are common but how old i was when i read the book but i was a kid or a young teenager that absolutely mortified and distressed me and it was a very early clue of what the hollywood scene was like way before harvey weinstein and all that gino the part i mean where there's a famous hollywood producer and it's it's a tight rope blink. You miss it detail where he sleeps with a very young girl about twelve or thirteen and it says since his wife died has husband so broken that he can only get aroused by very very young girls who take into him to sleep with by their mothers in the hope that he'll put them in a film and it describes the scene. Where this this. This young girl is being held up by her mom. That then makes you feel better about the gruesome way that this producer is then treated and obviously they left the out of the of the film. Because it's not there but even in the book. That's that's part of it that when i first read it as a young girl myself that really stuck with me as i is that. What they do is that what happens in hollywood. It's just really interesting. How that bit was really bypassed and but it was a massive clue. And i wonder how much puzo did know about the industry and how how common knowledge that was. I think we've blown this open in that. Puzo had some kind of amazing presents psyche. He was not involved in hollywood at all so he would not have known but he could see could see into gangsters. You could see into hollywood. He's the nostradamus of the the crime. World causing nice. They recruited heavily involved in the filming of the godfather. It's this crazy story. They only allowed the godfather to be made on the grounds that the word mafia was never spoken so this was because they wanted to film in new york. They had to film in new york. They couldn't use a set. It wouldn't look real. And the more boston york at the time.

"It got so fuller. Daybreak like the so much with chip it was unusable and so we have this situation that we never talked out of every of just we. We will never sure hughes. Tau was who you see. It's hardship. I think that is qualified for some kind of the something metal. San compare that to having a zippo branded onto your thigh. I think having a share towels in australia's gold coast with boris. Johnson's dad. We should say listeners. Just back to janie for a second before. She was doing these adventures with reynolds. She had amazing adventures in her and ryan one really bizarre one which is in nineteen seventy-two. She was commissioned by woman's own magazine to go and live with an omani shake in the village for two months the idea being that she would be his third wife and there was a very very strict understanding between all parties. That was going to be no hanky-panky that it was just purely her living the life to see what the life is like and she did it she went out there and she lived with them and she basically fell in love with the family to the point where she decided not to submit the article because she wanted to respect their privacy and then in that area. It's where she then with. Ronald fines went and found a completely lost city to time. This amazing the lost city of ooh bar. They heard rumors about it. No one could find it. Ranulph and ginny obsessed over. Its spent years and years looking for and eventually was sold when we started getting aerial shots via satellite that they were able to spot something in the sand and they uncovered it. And they found it in craig's completely lost city of the frankencense city. I think it was trading so it must have been this incredible rich scented place. They smelled out. I'm sure you're probably day and she did. All this stuff without being unit wasn't physically tough so for example she could do to lapse of a running track and then she had to lie down. She wasn't a strong woman but she's still went on this. Thirty five thousand mile transglobal expedition. She had to take a hot water bottle to the arctic. Because reynolds like sleeping with the windows open which i find completely what yeah and sometimes when they were overwintering the other end of the planet on the antarctic she wouldn't answer the radio and twice ran of came back to the cardboard hot and found that she was unconscious from carbon monoxide poisoning. What and i know from what. Oh god knows better the equipment going wrong or rooms. I don't know what exactly caused it but just so many moments of near total peril faded on this expedition and she took it pretty. Well didn't she. She was very hard is she. Sounds formidable thanks. Probably the words you would use so everyone was kind of terrified of like your most respected but strict headmistress is how i imagine i think when she heard the ronald her to have his fingers amputated. You know how to amputate ends of his fingers through sprite right. Yes but then. He sold them off himself at home. Yeah yeah i response was damn will be short handed on the farm now. Not a lot of sympathy. A short handed joke because his finger literally shorter. Because it's an intentional pun. Elvis he has that other layer that you can enjoy right. That's how good she was. One kind of really amazing facts about jenny is that she died. I think in two thousand and three although you tell me it was actually two thousand five but it was two thousand and four. You're kidding you know what. I'm gonna start writing days down all right. June two thousand and four. I think she may have been diagnosed with cancer in two thousand and three. She found out about her illness. When ran over her husband was away he was running seven marathons on seven continents in seven days and she didn't mention it to him in case he abandoned the attempt and changed it. He wanted him to get on with it and finish it. I think that is a sign of the kind of woman. She was completely that strong. Spouse saying yeah. Extreme brave guys. Can i tell you about the first all-female expedition to the north pole. Because it's a really fun story. This was in the nineties and basically this woman caroline hamilton who was a financier. She hated all forms of exercise. Never done ready any in her life. Decided i'm gonna take a bunch of women to the north pole and she put out for in the newspaper. The telegraph i think saying. Hey a you a woman who has no hiking or exploring experience and do you wanna come to north pole. Get in touch and all these women did. And it's the coolest story. They went on a trial weekend somewhere in the uk which was quite rough. I think it was more of an induction weekend and there was. This woman called an daniels who was a mother to toddler triplets. Who i think is marriage wasn't going that well she was not sports. You're outdoorsy a tool. She cried away through the induction weekend and it was all sorts of women like this and they did it. It was five teams of four who were selected Just from ordinary women and it was sponsored by mcvitie's so they had seven thousand biscuits to get in through the trid thousand biscuits biscuits. Yeah nothing else. And yet they made it and now they're a bunch of them are explorers so an daniels is one of britain's leading explorers done ten. She's amazing when they go back. They must have been a lot of diplomatic receptions and things to go to. There must have done a lot of hoping that is cured all ailments. Thank you on my thumb and it's disappeared stopped podcast. Hi everybody just wanted to let you know that sponsor this week by hellofresh. That's right hellofresh. Is.

"Which is he had a million dollars buried in his garden really and the story is and i think there's debate about how how much of it is true is that he asked his wife to get a spate. Go to the garden. Dig it up converted into thousand dollar bills so them into her mink coat and then just bring him to switzerland and so big ask i did you make it. Well i mean. They live together and switzerland until his death. So yeah she did. Did you bring the millions with her. I think that has been the veil has been drawn over that so we don't know take take his garden for god's sake digging charlie chaplin because that's exactly what happened to him. This is the weirdest story. He was body snatched. Yes by these two guys. He wanted to bury him under where he was buried right. His corpse was stolen really shortly after he died in the nineteen seventies. Seventy five seventy five and was these guys who wanted to basically store owner won his last wife and said give us all this money because we've stolen husband's body and they traced the calls and they caught the guys and the guys basically said we didn't really mean anything by it. We just wanted to dig him up. Bury him a bit beneath where he had been buried before so it looks like he was gone and then we had to let it bury him in a cornfield. No i mean. That is the worst alabama i've ever heard. They wanted six hundred thousand dollars or the equivalent of six hundred thousand dollars today for his return and this incredible sting operation. They lost surveillance operations on two hundred phone booths in the area when they were waiting for the call to be made which is substantial effort. I would say they didn't have a claim to be better than that they weren't trying to extort the wife they said gonna steal the body we were just going to hide it and they did apologize afterwards and she did forgive them. What he wanted was a comic he would have got. The joke is just a bit. A slaps it's amazing that this happened in one thousand nine hundred five as well isn't it. That's pretty extraordinary. Why because he died in nineteen seventy seven. Oh gosh sorry. Read that Wrong come out. What what year did oh greece. Come out no seventy eight came out in nineteen seventy eight a we pretending this action. I didn't come to the uk to seventy nine. So i i miss chapman adult. Yeah i came in well timed it right rubbish. Can we talk a bit more about the insane early popularity of charlie chaplin because we talk a lot about his career with the great dictator but his early films when moved to the usa. Because group in england incredibly poor moved to the in his first year. There he made thirty six films in one thousand fourteen. So i read is obituary in the new york times and it's full of these unbelievable details about the chaplain mania the craze so for example. I'm quoting directly from a victory. One new york theater played his films. Continuously from nineteen fourteen to nineteen twenty-three stopping only because the building burned down. That what i know i know but at one point he went to the ballet in los angeles and again. I'm quoting directly. It's dancer spotted chaplain in the audience and halted the show for half an hour while they embraced him much. It was a disease it going back to the original theme. It was called chaplin itis and literally from nineteen fifteen. Basically as soon as you become famous people were chaplain itis and he was everywhere. Like from china. Africa russia in japan. He was referred to as professor alcohol because of the way he's swayed which just like mild level of global fame for that time. But he always wanted it. I hadn't realized was so fame crazed on the boat over to america. He basically said. I'm coming to conquer you. Every man woman and child she'll have my name on there. And you know who is on that boat with who i believe witnessed that moment of him saying gonna conquer america was standing dash out. Yes stan laurel. Who was part of the british group of comedians. That they were with. They both went to america together. They live together for wall as well and he was like yet. This guy was insanely ambitious when they were living in america. obviously they weren't successful. As soon as they arrived they lived in a flat together and apparently they weren't allowed to cook in the flat. That was one of the rules of the tendency or whatever so when they were frying pork chops stand larwood would the pork chops and chaplain will play the violin incredibly loudly to moscow and meet my my favorite chaplain fact. Is that jackie kucan. Who played the kid. I don't think i've ever soap so much. When i saw the kid being put on the cart and taken away from chaplain and out stretching his arms and in that film that line for all of this horrific treatment of women in his life that beginning line where he says a woman. I cry aloud. A woman who's crime was motherhood such a simple thing to say at time when so many unmarried mothers had to abandon their kids. Okay them up for adoption and that that to me was such a such as port. Early support a single mother had of course. His mother was a single mom so he had a lot of compassion for women in that predicament. Anyway jackie coogan went on to become uncle. Fester in the atoms. Yes lots that cues cute. Little kid that went around with the tram. Smashing windows turned out to be the gruesome bolt heddon amazing. Can we quickly go back to. The man of who this whole fat was born. Ashok as swannee. He's such a great character and it's wonderful when you have people championing other characters as their whole life mission so he discovered chaplain when he was very young and he fell in love with him and he tried to get into being a performer himself. Off the back of chaplain and doing mime and so on. But it didn't work out for him and so he went to become this doctor and just while being a doctor he continued his love so he used to dress up as chaplain in the streets. He went on to set up a big festival. And when i say big. I think something like three hundred people go to it every year. But it's a tiny town in gujarat's it's not a big place and people from around world come to visit it and they dress up as chaplain and they cut a chaplain cake and trying to find your friend in that kreil festival even worse him being a doctor at you having a severe case of chaplain lightest booking in to see him. He turns up dresses chaplain and gives you a chaplain. Dvd high the podcast. Everyone this week's episode of fish is sponsored by one dream one. Jim is the streaming service.

"I didn't know it was a Monday, I guess by looking at the traffic problem, Mike, I could've figured that out. Yeah, It certainly looks like a Monday off here today, Ben. Yeah, we've got our issues here on 45 up to the north here. High above the highway. We've got them all free insurance copter. Yeah. This is a fully loaded car carrier that ended up being a rear ended by a tractor trailer here. 45 north out before the Chelmsford rest area. We've got the right lane and the center lane both knocked out here. The Fire department's been here for a while. You need to get all the way over to the left to get by this. I think it's going to be here for a while. Bobby. The front and the cab of the tractor trailer is mashed under the sum of the vehicles on the car carrier. Now this has 45 north of the standstill back 21 19 Littleton. Curiosity is the south outside back to room three and shops for Kristen Act of offering insurance copter. A new problems to the South. Here we go with the expressway South, which is crawling out of the tunnel down towards the gas tank, and then you're back in it from the split down to a crash, But a mile after route 37 5 vehicles piled up in the two middle lanes, but it's gonna be a problem. The North Island Expressway was terrible. Earlier with a trash truck rollover by the gas tank that's gone. That's clear, but delays Khun granted have a passing upon that circle, which is pretty typical this time of the day. Elsewhere. Let's say 1 28 South delays coming down through Needham and dead him downtown. The lower deck is backed up. So was the Tobin Bridge. Outbound the mass turnpikes in pretty good shape. My King. W B Z is traffic on the threes. Now we get a check of the four day WGC accurate The forecast tears Brian Tonight will turn out partly cloudy. "Doing here with him offering insurance copter? Well, not only a car carrier, but 18 wheel tractor trailer that plowed into the back end of this carrier on for 95 north bound. This is up in Chelmsford before the Chelmsford restaurant. A couple other smaller vehicles were involved in this as well. So we've got the right lines taken. Fire department is here. It's got the North found side of 4 95 a standstill back beyond Boston Road westward. You could see this if you're on the south bound side for 95, so that curiosity Factor Has everybody jam back towards Route three in the little connector offering insurance copter? Yeah, the North bound expressway. Is that disastrous? Well, it's crawling from East Milton up past Neponset Circle. There was an earlier trash truck rollover by the gas tank. But all lanes have been reopened there. The South bound expressways inching along from the tunnel down through Savin Hill. Now the H O V. Lane is not open. Yet. There's been a delay opening the lane because of that earlier crash, So just keep that in mind now, 1 28 South found is pretty tough. Highland Avenue. Need them down into dead. Um 90 three's back to both ways exiting forward 24 which is pretty typical downtown. The lower decks just about back to Sullivan squared the delays, of course. Continue through the tunnel out onto the expressway. That westbound connector tunnel is backed up. Two exiting off for 93 south. Surprisingly, the Tobin breach outbound is okay right now, My king W B Z is traffic on the threes. Cloudy skies as we head through the evening tonight. Lack of Accountability for Police Violence is Solvable

"This is solvable. I'm Jacob Weisberg. There is a lack of accountability for police, violence and one part of. Solving that is to give federal prosecutors more tools, so they can actually prosecute this cases. Approximately a thousand people killed during police encounters in the United States every year. And in fact, that number is held steady for nearly twenty years. Around half of those killed or white. Black Americans are more than twice as likely to die at the hands of police. They are killed disproportionately to their overall representation in the population. I'm thinking about. Say The shooting of Philander Castille. CAPLESS Tamir Rice twelve year, old boy, who was shot and killed by an officer when playing in a park in Cleveland. How do we achieve racial justice while protecting public safety? Lawyer Cheer Baynes believes the federal. Government has a key role to play. What exactly would you like to see? Happen there for Congress to lower the intense standard from willfulness recklessness, so that it would be a federal crime recklessly deprive someone of their rights under color of law to recklessly use excessive force for all the Americans who died during police encounters in less than two percent of cases, does an officer end up being charged with a crime? When you were at Doj how many times did specific language of willful thwart possible prosecution of of an officer? You think you felt a done something wrong. Routinely, that was the biggest barrier. It was always the central concern. Kira. Who's devoted his career to ending impunity for officers who commit crimes against citizens thinks we can fix this. The problem of lack of accountability for police violence is solvable. Cheering Baines is the director of Legal Strategies de Moth a racial justice organization before that he worked at the US Department of Justice, serving a senior counsel to the head the civil. Rights Division, that's the division that investigated. Ferguson Missouri and sued the city for unconstitutional policing and court practices. Baynes Co wrote the Ferguson report. Malcolm Bradwell spoke to Baynes about what needs to be done to solve the persistent problem of police impunity at the national level. To critical components are lowering the intense standard for the federal government to prosecute active excessive force criminally and using federal consent decrees to address systemic misconduct. You've been working on this question of how to make police better for quite some time right? Yes, actually. It's been an issue that's been. An issue that I've been distressed by want to do something about since I was a young kid. Actually the Rodney King case happened in the beating of Rodney King. One thousand, nine, hundred, one I was ten years old, and there are a lot of high profile incidents in the hundred ninety s with I'm dirty, yellow Louima and many other high profile cases of police violence police killings. Finish cared about as a high schooler for sure I can remember that were you in high school Chelmsford High School? It's a small town in Massachusetts next to the city of Lowell, maybe about thirty thousand thirty five thousand people. It wasn't like you were. LIVING IN LA or living in the Bronx where Ahmadou was shot, it was you were these were instance miles away. That nonetheless caught your attention. Absolutely these are national stories and I was very interested in. Civil Rights history even civil rights law. The role of lawyers in the civil rights movement. I think maybe juxtaposed that history and the principles underlying that movement with what I was seeing. Play out in terms of police violence in the country. At that time, and actually can remember. An organization called the stolen lives project that would collect information about the people who have been killed by police, disproportionately young black man. That is something that I recall, so. It's something I've. been working on for a long time ended up working on that some more in law school, focusing on it, and then it on my first job after clerking for a federal judge was to actually prosecute police misconduct cases including police violence. How early on you decide that? You wanted to become a lawyer depressingly early? Han actually I think I thought in high school. That would become a lawyer. What did you think of that decision? Well I'm an Indian kid and the child immigrants and so. I think a lot of people in that boat might relate. My mother wanted me to be a doctor. That would million other Indian children. Yeah Yeah. It's a common refrain and. Short of being a doctor, a lawyer was pretty good, so. But you know my family wasn't focused on these issues. These weren't the issues that they confronted him and they cared about it. In the sense research, generally aware my grandmother used to describe all this work as a community service or volunteer work and I'd have to actually get paid to do this job.

Beacon Hill - Long-term care facilities to provide daily reports on coronavirus cases

"On Beacon Hill legislation has been filed mandating that all of the state's long term care facilities make daily reports to the department of public health about positive covert nineteen cases as well as deaths WBZ's Laurie Kirby spoke with state representative Ruth Balser of Newton the legislation is simple it simply requires that all elder housing meaning skilled nursing facilities at all elder housing assisted living need to report daily to either their local board of health for the state department of public health the number of known covert nineteen positive cases and any mortalities in the facility isn't that happening now well I think it is happening to a large extent but it may not be consistent it's not the requirement is a national guidance that advises well in the case of nursing homes and not actually as broad a definition of senior housing is my bill but it's really an advisory of voluntary I have no reason to think most aren't doing that but we certainly saw the tragedy unfold in Holyoke when the numbers are not being reported and we just want to make sure to avoid you know that kind of tragedy and make sure that the reporting is done consistently on the state's website they've been providing numbers the mass DPH on long term care facilities in the Commonwealth to date there are twelve hundred and thirty six cases one hundred and forty facilities with at least one case of cove in nineteen what I think you're getting to here is there's no spaces this is the city of fatalities is that the idea it does not at that there's not a specific and we can't tell for sure whether we're getting all the reports I mean isn't this is another problem which is not everyone is being tested and that is insufficient amount of tests available but yes we want to make sure that DPH department of public health is informed we want to make sure the legislature is informed this bill requires that the department of public health then report weekly to the legislature numbers as well it has been staggering Chelmsford multiple residents testing positive Wilmington today I did a story where a seventy seven out of ninety one of their residents have tested positive seven have died of it what else is being done to protect our seniors living in these facilities in Massachusetts well it's terribly concerning I mean as you know and if your audience knows this is a virus that particularly targeting elders especially elders with underlying health conditions and so the residents of these facilities are really vulnerable the facilities have been crying out for help there is insufficient a personal protective equipment and sucked in many of the facilities there is insufficient testing you know hopefully the bill in making sure that all the numbers are transparent my hope is of course that will lead to the necessary resources spelling to these facilities is you have a loved one in a as a nursing home or assisted living facility in Massachusetts right now would you pull them out okay I don't know not sure many different from anyone in your audience on that each person would have to make a personal decision whether I mean some of these folks you know they're in nursing homes because they need that level of skilled care that you know maybe a family member wouldn't be able to provide but I notice in the case of some of the more independent senior housing and assisted living certainly some family members were in the position to do that or just making that choice but that's a very personal choice and those that have been exposed which we've seen a hundred and forty facilities with at least one case of cove it now they would have to self quarantine anyway yes for sure it means the other problem that's going on in the nursing homes that they are crying out for help within the assisted living facilities is the insufficient number of staff they've had you know staffing problems before this and now with individuals testing positive and so then they are out on sick leave or people who are concerned with the lack of personal protective equipment are leaving and so there is a problem actually some of the assisted livings have called on the state and I believe the secretary is helping with this to get some support from the National Guard to help staff people in a safe
