"Herrings family has been part of the colour story my mother, she's been here. Thirty nine years to my uncles, one works in phone, dri. My dad worked here for fourteen years. And my grandfather on my dad's side he worked here as well. I met up with Harring at the local union hall mentioned Boyden. She moved back to this midwestern manufacturing hub after a stint in the Marine Corps in North Carolina. She got a job in colour distribution center moving. Finished faucets. Then unfinished brass her starting pay was about eleven fifty an hour. It was only after she'd been working at Kohler for a couple of years at Harran came to a startling realization. Many of her colleagues doing exactly the same work. We're paid nearly twice as much as she was. He really did open my eyes to see what was really happening. And how much of an opportunity, I was actually missing compared to what I thought I was getting it made me realize, oh man. This is a huge gap that gap was a kind of hangover from the great recession back in two thousand ten colour adopted a two tiered Wade scale and workers like herring who were hired after that. We're stuck for years on a much lower track for both pay and benefits. A lot of companies made similar moves during the recession, most notably the big three automakers workers didn't have much powered resist when the economy was in freefall seven hundred seventy seven points, lower on the day of layoffs in the shuttering facility steep declines in manufacturing retail. Sale, even government, George Cooper who now drives a truck for colour remembers that period, as a desperate time, they were shutting down plants like the buildings was on fire, you know, and then housing market took take there's a lot of people that just went without jobs and trust me. I was one of them still Cooper says was frustrating when he got a job with colour two years ago long after the recession was over and found that two tiered contract had locked in lower wages Cooper, realized his pay and benefits were no match. For those of other drivers doing the same work didn't matter how long I was there. I was never going reached that same peak plateau that they did Courtney herring saw similar friction in the distribution center, where newer lower paid workers grumbled at being asked to do the same level work for less and you end up having your clicks because all their tier a and we're here, and we shouldn't do the same type of work day would just tell you fight out. Well, why should I do the same amount of work as that tier aid spend their twenty years that kind of division, not only hurt? It's morale it can also splinter union solidarity. But in colours case, the two-tiered wage scale became a rallying cry as veteran workers joined the fight to boost pay for their newer colleagues, Tim Taylor, who lead that battle started working for colour in the mid nineteen eighties. Forging molten metal into salad fixtures and a solid middle class lifestyle. I started in a phony pouring in the phone and that, that time it was hard to get in at core. It was the place to work, good benefits. Good money good. Everything five years ago, Taylor was elected, president of the local union, and he was determined to restore that good pay and benefits for new colour workers in the lobby of the union hall, Taylor built, a kind of shrine to pass labor battles, complete with a picket sign from the middle of the last century when American unions were at the peak of their bargaining power. This was out of somebody's graduate. The UAW on strike that was nineteen fifty four. We just don't want it to be. Be forgotten. You know, they fought for our future. Kohler workers out of their own strike in two thousand fifteen and it lasted more than a month when it was over. They had narrowed the gap in the two-tiered wage scale. But they haven't closed it entirely then last year, colour was back at the bargaining table, even though it's contracts. Still had a year to run by this time the economy was humming, and colour was having trouble filling jobs in December the company agreed to a new five year contract that effectively phases out the two tiered wage scale by twenty twenty three and give new workers better benefits as well. Taylor says you can see the turnaround in the colour parking lot, and a new attitude at union meetings. Second shift meetings are usually younger ones and you seem talk. Now, I'm buying a car pay. I got a little extra money. I'm with a go invest this a little for the future. So what's changed in the nine years since colour, I imposed the two-tiered wage scale in a word leverage unemployment? Cheboygan has tumbled to around two and a half percent. And some color employees were defecting to nearby companies like sergeant o cheese and Johnson Ville. Broth Taylor says that put workers in a much stronger. Bargaining position voted negotiated. Nobody hands it to you got negotiate for these wages of benefits, colour declined to comment for this story. But when the new contract was signed CEO, David Koehler, said in a statement, we are proud to be an employer of choice in Cheboygan county. Other companies are also phasing out two tiered wages, including the big three automakers afford executive called the unequal pay a distraction on the factory floor, but other companies are still moving in the opposite direction. For example, UPS just adopted a contract that puts new drivers on a lower pay scale and this winter, the new owner of a locomotive plant in Pennsylvania tried to cut pay for it new workers by almost forty percent. That's now in mediation. For now, more than two thousand colour workers in Wisconsin are celebrating their new contract, Courtney haring, who's getting married next year is planning a slightly more lavish wedding reception. And she says the mood improved on the factory floor, you could tell there was a lot of happy, people, a lot of them production went up people are wanting to stay for more overtime because they know it's worth their time now. So they're actually able to go out and do more things or save up for something herrings thinking about buying a house someday. And after seven years at Kohler. She finally feels like she's found a professional home. I was still doing going factory. Don't go in a factory. You're not going to have a life there. If feels like I do. And I'm getting somewhere. So I could see myself being here for my career my family's been in it for at least forty plus years. So I like to kind of continue that tradition long after recovery began a tight labor market has finally given workers the leverage they need to demand, a larger slice of the nation's growing can. Economic pie. Horsely NPR news. We'll have more coverage of full employment. All this week on the radio and NPR dot.

"The lakers moved as a team into uh from the nb eld before the merger came the lakers had moved from the nb l could be a so the year before the merger three the baa managed to convince uh the lakers to move into the b a so uh in terms of their history the nba claimed who of course that the lakers were uh and original nba franchise andy were but only because they'd been in the nba for one year they had been in the nba yell for uh for two years before that and they'd been the chicago gears before that so it's uh when you get to the uh i guess who was napoleon who talked about how to winners get to write history and that's what we see here interesting and algae don nelson the pauling himself as a sports fan but um while it was not a basketball players probably not given his shall we say challenging stature uh so i let before we sort of move onto the sort of the the the last sort of segment last era i guess of the nba alan and you view hinted at some of those things i i think this perhaps more uh uh th there's probably no better example of uh may be ah in a microcosm the the nbl uh and uh the uh the small town nature of the small town midwestern nature of some of the teams and blood then b team of uh i guess that dynamic as not only the baa came about but then the ah the merger and some of the prima roger nba merger uh hopping shall we say of teams to the bigger more a seemingly big city professional league of the b a and that's the cheboygan redskins and and for our audience can you give us a who don't even know were maybe cheboygan is maybe that you could give a hint of not only worship boy guinea's but perhaps why the cheboygan redskins uh perhaps are are well worth noting in a in the serb a bigger tableau of conversation cheboygan and uh and oshkosh.
