If Brian Hoyer is the backup, you could bring back, you know, even Jake Delgado, Brian murky, write them on the practice squad, but you know, I look at a guy like Garrett Gilbert, who has been around the league has been a capable career. He didn't even mention will grier. Well, so I was going to say there's two different ways you can go. You can find another veteran in addition to Hoyer who's going to be another pseudo coach for Mac Jones. And that could be a guy like Garrett Gilbert that could be a guy like Josh Johnson. There might be a guy like Kyle Lola, who we know they liked in the draft a few years ago. The other direction they could go is if Jared Stidham and maybe this is just until Jared Stidham comes back to. You could sign Garret Gilbert or Brian lurk or whoever and then he did him ready to go. You cut that guy you bring back to him. But the other thing is, I don't know that Brian Hoyer is going to be the backup beyond this year. It really seems like Stidham's a lost cause at this point if we're being honest. So the Patriots quarterback search continues, even beyond Mac Jones. And now there's starter, but they're going to need a backup here. So maybe you go out, you find one of these younger guys that got cut and you see if that guy can become your backup. Like your long-term three to four year backup. And if that's the case, will Greer, who I really liked in the draft in 2019. Third round dick was cut by Carolina today. I don't maybe he can be a starting NFL quarterback. I don't know that that's relevant in terms of the Patriots. I do think he struggled with coaching changes and system changes. And it's hard not to fall in love with this particularly if you read this story. Is it okay. I haven't now on ryan fitzpatrick or saying yes. Yeah yeah here. It is at nine teams. Hundreds of teammates. Lifetime of stories ryan. Fitzpatrick is a next level leader. I will definitely. He's about beloved player to play the nfl in the past ten or twelve years everywhere he spent. I know we've heard that before but Actually here like players like brandon quoted About how important he was to them. I mean you know he. it's an interesting story We find out what a great leader he is. But we don't really find out much about who he is you know. He does a very good job of disguising who he is personally ryan fitzpatrick and criticizing them for that I mean that's a good thing if you can manage to to have some level of stardom in this league and he has some level not a lot and and keep your mouth shut enough so people don't really know you know who you really can accomplish it. This is a man after your own heart. This is you this. Is you just trying to stay under the radar. You know lung. Lone ranger tommy. Tommy we is the ultimate lone ranger. He doesn't want to seize. Bosses doesn't want to talk to his bosses. He just wants to be left alone do his job you know. Certainly he wants people to compliment him. On what a great job he's doing. Those are the conversations he loves but he does not like to be told what to do and he likes to just sort of float on. Yeah i'm out here. You know wherever. I am right mccollum doing my job you. Daniel has had a career in the nfl. that's lasted like eleven years and probably five or six teams. And i think he's made literally over fifty million dollars and he's played in hardly any games. I think he is started like five. Total games over the course of his career. Andrew brandt who was the longtime front office executive in green bay. Who has been on the podcast. He's been on the radio show he tweets. Lottie does a lot of work for villanova. He writes a lot about the business of sports in a. He's got a podcast in. He put something together recently. Called the sports business may have been the nfl business hall of fame and he tried to identify players who have just absolutely done incredibly well in terms of making a living With great contracts but not necessarily great contributions on the field. And when i had him on the radio show and he was explaining this. It may have been the podcast. I said well you've got to have chase daniel in that he said yet chases number two and on my hall of fame list chase daniels like the perfect example of a guy and i'm not comparing him to ryan fitzpatrick is ryan fitzpatrick's played in a lot more games over the course of his career and started in a lot more but chase. Daniel is like the perfect example of somebody who is so likable. Probably very smart very accountable. Very responsible you can rely on him for every single thing that you done in. Even though he's not great at you know football on the field necessarily you know just like a guy may not be the biggest revenue generator or the best operator or the best administrator. But there's somebody there who's just so good to be around so likable. The around and so reliable Those people always are accepted. There always rewarded not an every aspect of life. I'm not suggesting that but And i'm not suggesting that ryan fitzpatrick and chase daniel or that similar again but Anyway chased chase. Daniel i think is made. I'd have to look this up but it's a lot of money for very little production in terms of dollars made for plays played. He's gotta have one of the best rates of pay of all time anyway. All right, joining us now Elizabeth Jacobson. She is a poet laureate, and Gerry Uelmen, who is essentially half of actual contemporaries. He's half the axle. He's one wheel. Are our two wheels. He's the back wheels of actual contemporary and their old bread truck. We'll start with the smarter of the two. Elizabeth Jacobson, poet laureate, Elizabeth Welcome to the show. Oh, thank you so much. Richard. It's great to join you again. But I think Jerry's way. Uh, more brilliant than me. Okay, well, we'll see Jerry. It's a lot to live up to Melting and humility and embarrassment here, But yeah, All right. But you know what? Let's let's start with you about this project. Now it was. I mean, I got the You know, I got the project I was. You know, your partner in crime it Axl Matthew chased Daniel I think we talk about this on the air and I go scores you guys can come on whenever you want. Was it? You and Matthew was that Axl to started this project? No, actually, it was Elizabeth who received the what this incredible poet laureate, and she also got a green light, which she should tell you more about than us. She invited us to collaborate with her. Gotcha. And so I was just well that Yeah, Great. All right, Take it away. Elizabeth in here. And, Yeah, I just tell you the process and then Jerry can explain what's going on now with the two grades, exhibitions and then more to come. So the Academy of American Poets, which is a huge national organization for poets, Um, offers the fellowship for poets laureate around the country, and it's an application and you apply with the project. So it's $50,000 fellowship, and I contacted Matthew and Jerry and ask them if they'd be interested in working on a project with me, So we worked out some of the details for the application together. I submitted the application I received word April year ago that I received the fellowship. Oh, In fact, you do our project which was all designed prior to Cove. It, um, you know, with in light of covert and s, O. Matthew and Jerry and I got together and we we organized and We move forward. I will explain Briefly. What the project Itwas So what it is, it is was Project for high school. Students and I taught poetry workshops to the students. Ah, syriza poetry workshops. They wrote poems. We studied in the workshops, love poems and owed various poems, contemporary poems that I selected. For them to read prior to meeting with me, Then we talked about them. They did some generative exercises they wrote home. They worked on them with their teachers. The teachers were fabulous. Anyway, they produced these poems and then from the poems they extra Parts of the poem to print on T shirts. That's where David Sloan and youth work comes in. And by the way you quirks received a $10,000 in kind, matching grants from the Academy of American poets for their work on the project as well. Of the original plan was that I would go into the schools and teach the workshops and the students would go into the screen Printing studio Youthworks Mean with David Sloan and learn the whole process of screen printing, as well as meeting with Matthew and Jerry of Axel to learn the difference. Design techniques for the T shirts and so on, so none that was able to happen, Everybody. Everything had to be done online, and David Sloan graciously did all the printing in the studio himself. We have. What? What ended up. We have poems. We have amazing T shirts with designs and poems printed on the T shirts. We have a beautiful broadside collection that was printed with with the T shirt designs on really nice paper, and we have an anthology G that we publish actual published. That collects all the artwork and all the poems from the projects. No, I think I said that in one breath. Wow, Jerry didn't miss anything. Wow. Yeah, a little in Europe and watch you go. So, Jerry, before we get into this, David slow not available, Hey, was going to join us, But apparently he was a big part of this as well. Maybe we'll get he and in Matthew on later to talk about this project as well, Right. So before you go on, Jerry, where is where is all this work? Well, um, we wanted to have one place where it would be for the you know, to cover at least part of the national poetry month of April, and it's still up. It's at the rail yard Performance center right outside the dance studio. And it's Oh, gosh, I'm trying to remember It's like 40 ft. Long and, like six ft High, I'm everything. Everything that lives with just described the broad size the T shirts and you know the poetry and all that. Well, the poetry and all the image that the kids came up with. Okay. And so you can see it all there, um and what you're going to farmers market this weekend. Jacqueline. It's Saturday. Just cross The rebel road tracks and they're going to read the poems. Look at the imagery. It's pretty awesome. Those very same imagery that you're looking at. There was printed on the T shirts by David Gotcha. Um, you know, Unfortunately, this was going to be more, um Larger project in that the kids. Wrote the poetry after working with Elizabeth. And then we create, they would be able to go to Santa Fe, Youthworks. And learn how to actually do soak screening. Um, so that was part of what we had hoped to do, but covert kind of messed with that a little bit. David, as was said very graciously printed these on the T shirts and the kids each got a T shirt with their image on it the image that they designed to go with the poem. Um, so that's where the T shirts now are being warned by all the participants in in the In this project. They're not available there. You know the kid's got him? Yes. And then, uh, With all those images on, uh, all the poems and we wanted in the T shirts who wanted to have the kids. How could it get this bad and You know, I get it. Shot on is unhappy. I get why, but I also don't really I don't Understand what his leverages the Houston Texans just say. You know what the Shawn We're just We're not gonna tell you not gonna happen Where we excited this contract you can either Retire at age 26 believe nine figures on the table or you can play for us. I don't know what choice he really has. I I mean, I I want I want to show on the end up with a better franchise of the team that can actually help him. It's like, well, you might want him, but we're gonna give the Patriots what the Patriots gonna give up for the Shawn Watson. I can't even like why. Why would you use it like If they get the front lots and they're not gonna draft in the top half of the first round very long. So the basic training him for a bunch of pictures in the twenties. You know, I mean the team like that, So I think the What I have to get if I'm Houston tax ins. Have to get something that gives me a path to a new quarterback, and that means the second or third pick to whatever it is. I need to go to my fan base and say No, we traded too strong, but we have Justin Fields. And it can't be you. I just don't know how you look at your fans in the eye and say We just tried to Shawn Watson. And we're gonna have chase Daniel playing quarterback this year. Yeah, I just don't know how that happens. Like I just you need to have something to bring to the table to get her fan base. Excited again, like they might not be thrilled that the Shawn Watson is gone. But you certainly can't have them have some stopgap troll Flaco type of starter. I get just this is not gonna work that way. So I think it starts there. I think you need to have Um, you know, either a pick or a player, something that gives you a quarterback and then something on top of that. I mean, look, if it Jamal Adams was worth two first round picks, I think they're from Watson's work equivalent before I think, and I don't even think that that's That's out of I pay it, too like I think he's special. I think he is whole fame talent. I think he's just a great great player. Great in the community. Great for your franchise. You checked every single box you want. I don't think there's really a price all too high that I pay for the Shawn Watson in his prime here, I like what you said. When it comes to path to finding a quarterback, and that's why it kind of goes with. Well, I know what I was just saying about the package. Where if I'm Houston if you don't have a top 10 pick in this year's NFL draft, Where I can, at least a sure that have the ability to take a quarterback like I'm only trading to Shawn wants, And if I'm in the situation like you are like, I really like Trey lands, for example, so I need the draft pick to go out there and go get Trey lands because then you'll just find yourself in the situation of constantly chasing your tail, and that's sort of the scenario that they find themselves in. They don't only have a quarterback problem right now. To me. They have a coaching problem now. I don't know David Kelly. I'm sure I talked to him at some point here in Kansas City when he was the wide receivers coach and I just don't really remember it. So I don't have anything negative to say about the man. But nobody in the NFL was going to hire David Cully to be their NFL head coach. Aside from Houston, and the fact that they fired their coach on October 5th they then were the last team to hire a head coach, and they hired somebody that nobody else wants to hire. You can't mess things up more than Houston's messed it up. No, you can't. And I mean, even to the point of like, you know, I was going through, and I did this a couple post this week, ranking the quarterback to Avi Tom Brady quarterback to those. You know Brady's beat in the playoffs, and I got that. Rock cost Wyler and I was like I forgot that the Houston Texans were the team Bill O'Brien was the team to give him that crazy contract like I mean, the text is made so many bad moves over the past few years that you just kind of forget about the run of the mill. Bad moves they made when you know they're off trading the third pick for Laramie Tunsil and not realizing that he had a lever. She didn't the highest contract ever for another in the line and stuff like that. It's just a bad franchise right now. I don't want to, and I don't want to be negative about it. Cully, I think You know, I have no idea. Maybe he's an expert Syrians. He could be fantastic, but the fact is his oldest coach ever to get his first time shot. This is the team. This guy? Obviously rebuilding. Hey, might be a great coach. I don't know. But all the guys out there you could have hired. I just wonder if a lot of guys were just like I don't want this Houston job. I'll tell you why, Captain When I was born the quarterback for the Chicago Bears is Bobby Douglas. For those that don't remember Bobby Douglas. Bobby was a guy that was always on the run running for his life because the offensive line was so bad. He also had the ability to run. You remember Bobby Douglas as well right so that the reason why that this is important is because Bobby Douglas was the quarterback When I was born, why was really able to watch With my dad watching football and trying to understand it. Mike Phipps was a quarterback. I'm a kid of the seventies. So I remember Mike Phipps as a really young person. Mike Phipps, Vince Evans Baba Vellini. That was the trio quarterbacks. 1979 then Vince Evans. I'm like, Wow, that looks like me is actually playing quarterback actually have his jersey at home, then seven I had made up a few years ago. And so the reason why that this is important today and every years because the Bears have never had that quality cornerstone quarterback that you could depend on to win a championship year in and year out. Never had that. You know when Jay Cutler came to the Bears People thought that the Bears were actually getting the better of the deal because you have Jay Cutler, who has had really come into his own yet with Denver raw talent, mid twenties and you said You know, Now you're catching him on the right spot. If you just nurture him. You got a quarterback for the next 10 years. Denver saw guys that was never going to get there, right? The Bears thought he's a young guy. He's on the way up. He's gonna be good and then never happened for him here in Chicago. And so the reason why that we even talk about the Shawn Watson is because the Bears have needed that guy forever. Forever. You just want a guy for 10 years to give you a chance. The organization wants to give a quarterback a chance, but it never happens, never materializes. And so that's the thing that's disheartening to me. I don't think you'll ever be a bear. But boy it be great to see him in a bear's uniforms, so it without a young quarterback asset. To put into a deal. If you got the call from Nicholas Aereo's the new GM in Houston and said Buddy. We've been friends a long time. We've done a number of deals together with Ryan and Nicolas. Ariel. Have, um, I've tried. He's not going to play for us. I got to move him. You're my first call. Three number ones, and you don't have a young quarterback. Asset to give me two more twos. You doing it? I think I just laid out for you that the three ones is what you're going to get. Someone else is going to be able to give more than you know. We haven't You see the best of them just as of yet, so I think that I could somehow get back into the first round at some point. So I could be able to get more picks in the 2nd 3rd round somewhere down the line, But three number ones should be rich enough. If everybody wants to give the farm for strong watching. That's fine, But I think I draw the line at those number one picks because that's valuable to a bad Houston team. No question if you're Houston, No, and you can't convince him. I'm glad they're in this in the postseason, but that doesn't mean Two years is a lifetime in the National Football League. This sample size is enormous. And it's not just Mitch. It's your offense. No one ranted against the Vikings last year, like the ranting this year over a quarter of football with the Eagles when the liking sat everybody that players play that's a different conversation, and you beat the bucks this year. Yes, it was Tom Brady. He forgot what down it was at the end of the scene. Now moment. You don't you still win. But like this is where you kind of have to zoom out and go. Okay? I'm thrilled during the postseason. They are who we've expected them to be over two years, aren't they? Or they have defined themselves in pretty clear fashion. You're eight and eight in 2000 and 19 Year, 88 and 2000 and 20. You beat the lesser opponents. You mightily struggle against the better teams in the National Football League, as most teams do. But you can't consider yourself one of the quote unquote elite teams when you struggle with that. Class of roster that class of team so Like that's the conversation when you simplify things for our quarterback, and you get him on the edge, and you asked him to do the things that he does excel that he can make some place. He's not the worst quarterback in the league. He'll be in this league for a very long time.
