in Washington In a Martinez and Culver City California One of the killings that sparked racial justice protests last year again in the national spotlight with a trial set to begin next week in Brunswick Georgia Three white men are accused of murdering ahmaud Arbery at 25 year old black man shot and killed as he was jogging down a residential street NPR's Debbie Elliott will be covering the trial Debbie welcome remind us what happened there Well it was February of 2020 in the coastal neighborhood in Glenn county Georgia ahmaud Arbery had refused to stop as the three defendants chased him down with pickup trucks Now they had suspected him of recent break ins although police had not linked him to any Arbery was unarmed but one of the men had a shotgun and confronted Arbery He fought back and was shot to death Now advocates for the defendants are going to argue it was a legal citizen's arrest on tragically arrived Now you've spent some time reporting in Brunswick recently How do people there describe what's at stake in this trial You know local activists and Arbery's family see this case as yet another test you know and the nation's struggle for racial justice In part because of how local law enforcement initially handled this case seemingly protecting the accused And even ahead of the trial there has been this grassroots push for accountability I met the awans of Brooks in this attila shore subdivision just outside Brunswick the spot where her nephew ahmaud Arbery was killed This is where he lands late to rest This is where it was right here It's a neighborhood filled with large oak trees and brick ranch style homes a sign in one front yard declares we run with Ahmad Arbery a former high school athlete lived about two miles from here Brooke says this was one of his running routes It was common for him to run Am I really ran like all over Brunswick This was just a good place We thought you know because it was a neighborhood off the highway You know he would drive through his neighborhood and then cross the highway But some residents here had grown suspicious of Arbery after repeatedly seeing him entering a new home construction site So it has some of the construction That's defendant Travis mcmichael on a 9-1-1 call minutes before he shot ahmaud Arbery Okay what did you do The dispatcher said she'll send police But asks what was he doing wrong Then there's a second 9-1-1 call from Travis's father Gregory mcmichael also a defendant Where it's until a short I don't know what we were all Seconds later you hear three shotgun blasts The yuans of Brooks says she often imagines what that moment must have been like for her nephew trapped in fighting for his life Now she's bracing herself to hear defendants argued this all happened because they suspected Arbery in neighborhood thefts And even if you steal something nobody has the decision to make As far as being the judge the jury and the executioner At trial Travis and Gregory mcmichael and another neighbor William Bryan will face state charges of murder false imprisonment and aggravated assault for chasing armory and pickup trucks and shooting him to death They've separately been charged with federal hate crimes That trial is scheduled for early next year Arbery's shooting has drawn intense national scrutiny happening around the same time that racial justice protests were erupting in response to police killings There were serious questions about how Glenn county officials originally handled the case Nothing happened until cell phone video of the killing recorded by defendant Bryan was released months later on social media The former district attorney now faces charges she tried to shield the mcmichaels from prosecution The Alder mcmichael had worked as an investigator in the DA's office and was a former police officer His son had been in the coast guard Several judges and prosecutors have recused themselves from the case It took nearly three months before arrests were made after mounting public pressure and the Georgia bureau of investigation taking the case from Glenn county police This body cam video shows police treating Travis mcmichael with great care and deference as he stood literally with blood on his hands while Arbery lay in the street That's okay Okay If he were to stop Like I said just take a breath They were given a courtesy that the normal citizen would not have received Pastor John Perry was president of the local NAACP when Arbery was killed In particular in the black community if you were found to have killed someone Yeah you getting handcuffed and you're getting booked Perry is running for mayor of Brunswick in the aftermath of Arbery's killing He is part of a crowded field that reflects a wider political awakening He says this case is a prime example of why many black citizens see the justice system as tainted Some people call it the good old boy system I call it relationships of privilege.

"George's story with the black joggers that happened back in February in a forest it is getting a lot of attention now you know some of the I think a lack of coverage well obviously corona viruses the fact that a lot of the news cycle and you know what has happened or what's important that we might not be hearing about but also there's a good percentage of of things that just not happening because so many people are at home yeah it's kind of like the emergency room affect tell ER visits were just down because there weren't as many car accidents or people falling off bikes and crack in there and open it did cetera welcome back to Schmidt our number three here on a Wednesday and not yet a matter of moments we will discuss the video which we're seeing of this Georgia man shot while he was jogging I mean this is like an execution is an an absolutely insane stories will give you the details on that in just a bit some of the other craziness that we're seeing in this is about a murder suicide some kind of lover squabble here and the university of Pittsburgh is saying that this researcher who was murdered was on the verge of a very significant finding involving corona virus this is a murder suicide apparently which happened in Pittsburgh being little B. I. N. G. being a little L. I. U. thirty seven years old and according to the university of Pittsburgh where this being little was a research professor at the university said that he was on the verge of making is a called a very significant finding regarding corona virus we will make every effort to complete what he started in an effort to pay homage to a scientific excellence his loss will be felt throughout the entire scientific community so what the hell happened here cops said that how H. A. U. O. G. U. that how cool forty six years old shot being low to death on Saturday then he left the murder scene walked about three hundred feet to his car and then blew his own brains up then shot himself murder suicide according to media outlets in Pittsburgh and according to the police and Lou I knew each other no we don't have any further details but Lou was killed inside his home this is in Ross township Pennsylvania in the Pittsburgh area roughly ten miles north of downtown Pittsburgh three rivers and the cops looking for a motive and was there some kind a lover's quarrel squabble but the university said the doctor Lou is very close to the understanding of the cellular mechanisms that underlie the sars C. O. V. two and the cellular basis of the following complications and then he was close to something potentially big will hopefully I'll listen I feel bad for professor being little obviously here but hopefully he left another material enough notes that they can continue and finish his research and if he was about to discover something really good they can complete that work that's what I'm hoping for is an update also on the story I did last week member the security guard at a flint Michigan area the dollar store it was Calvin marlin and Calvin marlin in flint Michigan was murdered shot to death inside a family dollar store I was confuse the stores you get dollar general dollar tree and family dollar which is the one where stuff is really a dollar I think it might be dollar tree in fact a faster fester for my M. J. morning show brings this up on the podcast that dropped yesterday so my new M. J. morning show podcast is out episode twenty two so if you are familiar with the M. J. morning show if you're not familiar with the M. J. morning show my morning show of eighteen years reigned in Tampa Bay ran in Jacksonville and other Florida markets in Saint Louis Missouri and other markets over the years eighteen year run and I put the team back together B. M. J. Chris Todd Schmidt is M. J. and frog in faster and all kinds of surprises my wife's audited interns and special guests and the people are loving this podcast even folks have never heard of my previous show like wow should have different life love this thing and we talked about I think faster told me that the store where everything is really just a dollar I think that's dollar trickery where is family dollar and dollar general or just just kinda like regular stores some but also the security guard at this flint Michigan a family dollar store asked this group of people in the store to put their mask on because you need a mask the shop in the store and it was an argument and they shot the guard to deaf Calvin marlin forty three married for ten years to murder the guy and it turns out that Sharm el Teague she's a female she has been charged with first degree premeditated murder of Calvin Marlon some awful awful story terrible sorry for all the death and destruction here folks but then I hear we have we have the story of the murder suicide with Pittsburgh researcher we got this family dollar murder we've got this Georgia story which some of this for a second very important and the lawyers for the family of this this season jogger this black man who was chased down and shot to death by two white guys they want the authorities to make the arrests here and the two white guys their claim is all they thought that he was a burglar in the neighborhood they want to question him well the video has been released and it shows the fatal shooting of our model or a mall there are three all malls are brief and the fight just prior to his shooting N. or breed was twenty five years old and he was shot to death in Brunswick Georgia and Brunswick by the way between Savannah and Jacksonville Brunswick yeah sort of just over the line so if you're driving north on I ninety five you go through Jacksonville you you go over the bridge you get into Georgia and that Brunswick is just the I've had several cars over the years come into the port of Brunswick not not anytime recently also who's used to be a great barbecue place right off that exists as you head into Brunswick off of I ninety five and anyway he he was in this neighborhood and he was jogging he was running back on February twenty third handy he was shot and the cops say the two men who chase them shot him Gregory McMichael sixty four his son Travis McMichael thirty four and the investigation still is ongoing neither of them arrested the lawyer for the family they want arrests to be made the prosecutor in Brunswick Georgia yesterday said that this is going to be brought before a grand jury clearly what the court struck down in what's going on in the room so this is been put on hold for a bit because of coronavirus now the lawyers for the ordinary family they say listen there's enough evidence here you don't need a grand jury to be convened to look at the evidence to recommend or to indict family say no there's enough evidence here there are a number of agencies that can go out and make these arrests today that is our demand the man who murdered all mall should be prosecuted according to Lee Merritt the family attorney and the lawyer called on the D. A. Thomas Durden who is out of Hinesville Georgia to issue the arrest warrant and to indict these two guys the McMichael's Gregory and Travis the father and sun the video is extremely disturbing background on the case for some quick background on the story it was February twenty third and Gregory M. like Michael claims that he saw this armory on for hauling **** is what he told authorities down setelah Dr Fadi was a burglar because they claim the burglar had been targeting the neighborhood Gregory make Michael had a three fifty seven magnum handgun his son grabbed a shotgun and they exited the pickup truck they chased armory and it was a third neighbor a third man jumps into the foot chase then he gets into make Michael's truck apparently the father told cops that he shot in order to stop when they caught up with him there was a confrontation so just to clarify it was this other neighbor then this this other neighbor jumped into the truck that the father and son had abandoned I as they're running after our break now the father says that he told me to stop when I called him there was a fight make Michael stated at the end unidentified male began to violently attack Travis with two men and started fighting over the shot gun at which point Travis fired a shot and then a second later there was a second shot we don't have anywhere in the report that says that armory was armed but it appears that he did not have a weapon and the video of the shooting was released by the lawyer by merit yesterday Anne's seems wrong on video that was I was captured jogging down the road white pick up truck stops in front of him RB runs around the vehicle shot is fired and of course the truck at that point I believe was driven by the neighbor that got into the truck to drive it as the father and son were chasing after our break yeah I mean a lot of questions here what happened you know before the video we don't know but you know it with what we're seeing here it's it's a terrible looking video and yeah I I want this thing fully investigated and if these two white guys are guilty of killing this black I don't care what color you are whether it's blacks on black whether it's white on white whatever justice must prevail here and it needs to be a thorough investigation and ultimately I'm sure jury's going to decide this case but it is absolutely horrific and it's being called the essential electric what actually occurred so terrible terrible story speaking of guns what do you think's going on with gun sales right now what do you think is going on with the number of background checks in this country now get to that coming up in just a bit and what might be required in airports what might be a federal mandate get to that coming up in just a bit and not a lot in this final hour here on SSNIT folks I want you to sleep well how about treating yourself to what you want what you need what you should've done a long time ago and that is the ability to get an awesome night sleep how many of you know you need a new mattress I'm sure a lot of hands just went up and this is where purple is going to help you gotta get the purple mattress so technology is improved what everything we deal with the phones we use car shopping mattresses all of pretty much stayed the same since.
