Accelerating from the south taking the gold medal. That was the moment. You've probably been hearing about all day. When canada's andrew digress beat the two american sprinters in the men's two hundred meters and won his first gold medal. It's something that hasn't happened for a canadian. Since one thousand nine hundred twenty eight. And this is mr grass's second medal at these games in tokyo and his fifth ever after the race he spoke with the cbs's adrienne arsenault. Here's some of what he said. i mean if he has amazing. I've been training for this moment. You know every comes around every four years. Five years this time and remember adversely. This is all the adversity. That i've been through all the injuries i knew my time. Calmer i gotta thank god you know just my family staying with me. Motivating me inspire to just keep going. Don't give up on myself and this is for them for them. Because i'm just i'm just. I'm just filled with emotion. I just can't believe they're finally. Finally i got the job done. And i did it. This is just this is just a real more surreal moment for me on the track right and he had the flag. You just look like a like a big. We have been taken off your yeah saw the press. You all the pressure. i mean. try not to cry. Arm saw the pressure. I've been dealing away to come back. This is my moment and all the expectations deliver deliver in this moment. And i'm just. What were you feeling as you watched him win. Gold oh boy. I was like the most amazing moment in my life you know. I know she's been this to hear him. Say how how relief having no word. The weight of the whole word on his shoulder didn't no one should have to go through that. What's it been like watching your son. Go through this and dealing with all the pressure and the stress. He was doing this for everybody. You know the country is finally. You don't more than this was doing this. I mean that's such a difficult thing to ask for anybody. I mean honeybee excited. Everybody being excited. But i'm thinking about what these accurate schools through. You know all the pressure that's being put on them to really perform and is it really worth of this. Do you think that's a conversation that we need to have right now. After what we saw. Simone biles go through and we're in a moment of joy and celebration for your son but when you look at you hear him talk about this. Do you question whether it's all worth it. Yeah i do i do. Actually i do question because it's like it's like so much training You know so much so much pressure. They put on their body. It's joyful for a lot of us but is it really joyful for the other peaks is the hardest part of this. Not being able to be there with your son in this moment. Exactly that'd be honest not being able to be there. That'd be to hold his hand. That'd be to noise. She's okay everything that's going on in japan with cove it and everything you know every day that he comes back home safely to us when you see him next when you get to see him in person and you are in the same room and you can hug him. What are you going to say to him. That i love him so much view you know and i know i know you doing this forever for all of us you know like but i just want you to be happy to do this for yourself. Also and this is what you really want to be doing. Do you think this is what your son really wants to be doing. Yeah he he says he wants. He wants wanted to bring back that metaphor canada. You wanted to bring that met for us. You know he wanted. He wanted that. Go a meadow. And i did sprays that. That's what he wanted to free himself. Your son is a father him himself. Now what does it mean to to know that your grandkids are watching your son achieve this. They were like what like super excited at tieto. His daughter especially like you know she was so excited. I know she doesn't quite understand everything that's happening. But she just see that he's that he's racist and you know she's happy heat. He's running on winning. And i know she understands that like you know back in two thousand sixteen You were with your son in rio and it was. He won his first olympic medal. And you spoke with our show after that. "You know you'll know what it is in a moment so number six is tiger king and we can't just skip over it. This is not i from either of us. That is one hundred percent right. I would say that tiger king favorite but there's something charmian about some guy who wears muscle shirts and looks like he smells bad with mullet and he's shooting into a lake for no reason. I mean it just starts off that way. I mean he's crazy. He's crazy and i found him. I didn't find him endearing in any capacity. And that's my really didn't want like understand gas. Why he it became such an immediate cult phenomenon. I just Chucked it up to like. Were all screwed at home in this pandemic under quarantine and there's not a lot else to do but like i just don't find him interesting. The most interesting piece of the entire show to me was how his eyebrow ring managed to stay in his eyebrow because that shit migrated to the very very edge like it was moving on up it had a life of its own. It dead but i just. I don't care about the story line. I just do not care. I think everybody involved in the entire thing is a scumbag for the most part. But if carole baskin scumbag. She still scumbag do i. Did she kill her. Was she involved in her ex husband's death. I don't know and frankly i don't care you know why. Because he was also a scumbag. So like i don't care you know instead. Sounds like robin is on the side if they all walked off of a plank into call dera of like volcanic a magma or probably wouldn't care no i would however call. It is really funny. I do believe that. Carole baskin is on cameo. So if you're looking for a cameo carole baskin will do her stupid. Who their kits kittens and wearing stupid. You know reese readdress so yeah so if you wanna do that for like five thousand dollars headed up but tiger king unfortunately had to be mentioned in this list. Number five is very again and nixon as a whole this holy and yeah holy shit so in october keith. Rin neary the leader of the nexium. "Let's get to it And then she put an asterix. I changed names out of respect for victims human and She did which is Great. I also pulled out a detail she left and because I think it's very indicative. It's almost I changed another name but not of a person's got word. Shandon name words easier back in my twenties. I worked at a TV network where I helped produce all of the horribly wonderful countdown shows. You only really watched when you were hung over while working there. I made friends with a guy named Henry whenever anyone in the company needed anything. You always called him. He was very popular Charmian. Good looking man anyway. He became romantically involved with a coworker of mine will call her Jenny. It was under the radar for a while. But after a few months they decided to dot dot dot get married red flag in all caps. Oh the next boy. Yeah and the news of their marital bliss was the talk of our office cut to six months later they were separated and Jenny moves in with her sister. Anna who was also a coworker a one day shortly after their break up. I'm leaving work to get into an elevator with him. We have some small Chitchat. I asked him what he's up to that night. "It's the Ted radio hour from NPR guy rise. And on the show today ideas about keeping secrets. So before the break, we were hearing from Sharm and Gooch who fights corruption around the world. Now since we last spoke with Sharman the world has changed, and it seems like corporate and government corruption has just gotten worse. Right. Is it the bleak his time ever effectively? What you're asking, is it the bleakest time ever? I think it's unprecedented just remember a time where everything was rushing so fast. And so on predictably, I mean pavement Osmay about break says little scratching our heads, how it can go into such a state on the one thing I know is, I don't have a clue what's gonna happen next. And I think that really holds true globally. Yeah. When you think about huge forces that are shaping our world today. Like Britain's departure from the European Union or the 2016 election in the US. Could you make a parallel between the sort of the secrecy of like dark, money going into political campaigns, whether it's to promote the leave campaign in Brexit, or certain election outcomes in the US or armies of social media bots, are, are using social media to influence people. Are we sort of seeing now a new kind of secrecy, interesting question, I think that corruption has many, many mosques, many approaches of doing what it does? I think we're seeing the exploring of misuse of new technology social media platforms ways of moving money ways of creating so-called public voices and I think with sort of saying. Inevitable flexing. If that really as, as people see how it can be misused and I think the fan we're talking about it. And the fact that a lot of a lot of journalists are investigating and reporting on it is a really good thing because I think it's, it's dragging it out into the open wanna ask you secrets. I mean, do you think it has become more difficult for corporations to be 'have in devious, and secretive ways today than it was five years ago or ten years ago? Or do you think it's actually easier? Well, I think corporations of beginning to realize a high risk of getting court and that water is being considered acceptable is changing, but in terms of your board a question is it easier? Well, I would say it's getting harder because in the five is since we spoke, it's going to be the lower in, you know, across the whole, the European Union, which is twenty eight countries. Full. Public registries of who all the beneficial owners who the actual real people who owned companies. And that was a major step forward, unin America. I mean despite the massive change and sort of political climate five years ago. Maybe a handful of Republicans understood the problem of anonymous companies and, you know, last year, the about six committees led by Republicans that were looking at the problem of anonymous companies across a whole sways of American life. So I think this been a huge shift in America itself. So is there a change has it got harder for companies to keep secrets? There's more spotlight and things have changed into in terms of that campaign. And I think also, yes, there is the whole kind of dull market, and an old of potential online crime, but also online tools for tracking what companies doing for crunching through millions of data points. Andrew. Information have stronger and better than ever. So I think actually, I think things all getting better. Charmian gooch. She's an anti corruption activist and the co founder of Global Witness. You can see both of talks at Ted dot com. So with all the ways that we can be tracked now, like our secret can be tracked. How do we stay below the radar? You can use encryption, which I do. You can use our phones verses that are very, very difficult for the government to tap into which I do you can try and use cash more often than.

"But more importantly, you keeping the community safe was silent witness and now suddenly decision himself. Jimmy Rothschild do early on in life. I wanted to do my uncle was we're from New York was a reserve cop in the neighborhood being a police officer just to me looked really really cool. And now it's been over twenty years doing this. I still am thankful every day. I wake up and get to do this. But last Saturday I had the opportunity to meet with a kid who's I say kid because he's a lot younger than me. But he's leaving the Marine Corps. He still in the marines. And he wanted to learn about this career. He thought he had go out and get a college degree before he could apply, and we talked to a bunch of options. One of our previous guests, Lieutenant Colonel Steve armenta from the Marine Corps. We're able to put him on speaker phone, and he offered such great encouragement to this young marine. So two things one. It was really cool to see someone embarking on the beginning of a police career. He's taking his tests soon and to see the excitement and there is about starting a whole new career. And then I also love the camaraderie that both marines and the city of Phoenix employees have to encourage one another and I'm really hopeful for this candidate. But today, we're gonna talk about how anybody can look at careers within. The city, and I think our guest has a lot of information share exactly we've had guests before that or commanders and sergeants and so forth talk about the cabinet, and what to expect as a police officer. But very some have we had someone come in and tell you what to expect in terms of the actual process. You know, the how do you apply what what's the pay? We got someone who's actually gonna tell us numbers what to expect as far as total compensation packages, and that just be a police officer. But also to be maybe a police data entry technician or police automated system secretary there's other things you can do that can help the police department and help your community. So without further ado, I want to introduce Charmian gyns am I pronouncing this Charmian Hines, and you are the senior H R analysts and talent acquisitions, and we're talking about human resources. Yes. So fake Rabin our show, and if you will start off with the process. How does this change hasn't? It does a little bit. And I do want to give shout out to my appeared Denise stores 'cause she's actually the the direct recruiter for okay? Haydn other postings. That I get to come on here and talk about it. Yes. We are we have been come so flexible, I think the last time I came on your show, we may have allow people we may have had testing days once a month at the time twice. Well, now, we're up to three times a month a Thursday a Friday and a Saturday. Oh, really? So flexible that way, if you're working normal days, you have the weekends off. You can do that if versa. I love that. Yes. And if you want to again, take that test on short notice just give us a call or contact us or growing, Phoenix dot sorry. Phoenix dot gov website, so apply for the job. And we are we are we've become very flexible. We want to have a Representative in diverse applicant pool. Represent community people period. Now, Jamie mentioned, you know, college degrees and so forth, and how it's not necessarily that you talk about what we are looking for as far as no less than so basically you have to be twenty one and a half years all by the date of the exam. You must be twenty one years old before you graduate from the academy. But you can have a high school diploma or GED and United States citizenship is the basic thing you have back in the day. I I actually was an army. I had moved back there to apply. Yes. One of the things I think that's changed over time. And I have to give credit chief Williams chief kurtenbach Lieutenant Tovar surge important, and the recruiters we have an amazing group of folks right now. And what we found is they are really really flexible and accommodating so in the past we as applicants had to all the heavy lifting. Will you find is? They've said, hey, we want to reach as many qualified applicants as possible. And we're willing to go the extra step. Are you seeing an increased push flexibility thinking outside the box from the current regime of folks who are willing to go the extra mile to get the right applicants definitely. And we we really want to encourage people. I think people, you know, there's a lot of different ideas about the police, but we want people to know that they're, you know, if you're passionate about serving the public you wanna give back. To your community you want. You have the attitude. I wanna to be engaging in collaborative we want you. You know, we want those people to be part of the we want good people care about community. So let's talk about the process. What happens I'm a brand new person valley? I hear this rail Sean kind of excited. What do I do? Definitely again. You wanna go on Phoenix dot gov. To apply for the exam. But again, if shorter notice, hey, give us a call in or you can come down to Calvin good building just to ask them questions about when the next test. Because again, we're so flexible with that. And when you actually click come in that day to take the test. I'm we're giving results. That's another thing. I've seen in my growth with the process you had to wait a long time. We're talking about same day results, really fast. And when you say tests, we're talking about written exam. Yes. The written exam, and you can go on the police website for any the study materials or anything of that nature. But again coming down if you come down that happened to come down at day, you take the test. We're going to give you your results right away. And another good thing is if you wanted to start your background packet, which is also on the website. We're actually encouraging people to do that. Because it is quite extensive one of the things that I think that people when they get. Online are going to find is it's an incredibly user friendly experience. So when I met with this young marine, recently, we had some questions what does the test? Look, look like what are they asking for? We had a study packet years and years ago, that's not the case now and downloading the sample test and seeing what the process looks like took away any intimidation, and they really have designed it to be user friendly. Yes. And you can ask them police for cruisers questions and things like that ahead of time. So again, we're really trying to be open minded inch. And we're flexible in changing the process as as as we go online just to see what what the needs of the public are again, people have different work schedules and people who are out of state as well. You know, somebody passes the test they get a passing score. What happens then are they on a list? Do they go to a physical right away? What's the process? No that that background packet is very important because. You want to turn that in a soon as possible because that will increase your chances of moving through the process a lot faster that has the most time mechanism. Correct. Correct. So as as you're going through that turning your background packet and working with the follow up detectives in the process, then after that would be your physical agility in AVI, other things that are expected one of the biggest I think misnomers out there is that everyone thinks you have to be twenty years old twenty one years old. And that's it. We hardly get a chance to really talk about people who are in the second act of their careers. Maybe have a few years past that can you talk a little bit about these. Absolutely. And we'll talk about that defense show that I've met with my HR director yesterday, and she was saying that there is a trend nationally for people who wants a recruiter, and they may be may career. So we really want to encourage diversity. People. If you're looking at something you've been in a different career. We are very open here in Phoenix to looking at you as well. So we want people that represent the community again different walks of life to be reflected in our police department as well. So yes, if you're in that may career, please join us take the test and see what happens. They're talking about somebody in mid career. They may have a position with the job where it's not going anywhere. That's really different here with police farm because when we talk about salary starting salary it really changes from year to year to year to year longevity pay there's compensation so many things in that total compensation package. Can we talk a little bit about the initial salary, and we're ends and all that good stuff in between the exciting thing about. I mean, I think a lot of people don't realize this before. Basically after you get out of the academy is somewhere around fifty five and we're talking about total compensation. We say fifty five five thousand dollars a year. Yes. In some change. Okay. The cool thing is we're highly competitive, so you as you stay with us your salary is going to increase the larger you stay with us. So the log you say the better your pay, and that's including your base salary, including is car career enhancement pace. If you get a degree, even if this is an associate's, your pay goes, you're paying increases you get longevity pay. They call it productivity. I'm sorry productivity enhancement pay. And then also you get a uniform Aloun alowance. Okay. And you also get DC p contributions one of the things that Darren won't tell you were in the same boat. Both of our spouses work for the city. And the reason we do that is the city is an amazing employer. When you have the heart to serve the ability to lead, and you want to take care of other people. This is the place to work. I know I'm biased right because I worked in the city, but your wife has been with the city for how many years, I'll take it one step further where you're leading me is I went for thirty years for the city. And when I left I miss the city, I missed the benefits. I miss the. It's a good working environment. Really as most valued resources are employee employees are well taken care of the public is well taken care of. So literally the first year old has gone from the city. I asked my wife you need apply. Absolutely. Now, we have two minutes left talk a little bit about the type of candidate that we want. We we've hit a few times, we've want someone who truly cares about you. You shared a really sweet story. Oh my goodness. So in this came right on time. I was literally at my desk. The other day looking out the window. And I saw an officer an action it was so positive. There was a person and he was apparently homeless and had some mental disabilities, and it and it was pretty sad situation. And I appreciate it was the patience of the officers, and they were waiting instead of just arresting him or taking him away to jail they were collaborating with the crisis response team. And so they were waiting for an appropriate resource to get to help assist this person. And I thought that was so positive, and I think that's reflective of our leadership that we're really trying to increase that community collaboration with different resources. I'm in trying to help the community and not just saying, hey, we should just harm off to jail, but he needs some help here. This is the one of the few careers. I know. All were every day. You get paid. You can find somebody to help. And every day. You get to go home knowing you made a difference..
