"As a rider. If that makes sense does and as a recovering trial lawyers always been a linear thinker. I thank you for that. Appreciate appreciate appreciate that chronology. I can pick it up whatever year. I want to pick it up in and start reading right. So we're gonna talk about some things like you mentioned music and sports just a moment but I wanna talk about an aspect of the book. That's a i think a little theme attic because the sixty s was a period of change and it seems like change has been kind of a theme in your own life you went from being a reporter to an editor the charlotte observer for many years then shifted and took that late to become an author fulltime and then you're riding residents teacher you've written books That focus on you know the political issues and struggles and and then You know later you wrote some some catchy and folks a song. I mean there are a lot of change going on. Wanna start with this theme of change from minute because it's really a part of this book and say you know if we start in the sixties with the young frog gallia. There's a saint on page one thirty six of the book where you kind of wave memoir into the story which you do throughout the book and you credit. The events of nineteen sixty two particularly the right shoulder demonstrations in mobile alabama. Where you lived at the time and seeing dr martin luther king being treated roughly on the sidewalk by two policemen is events. Which you say looking back. Set you on the path to becoming a writer Can you talk about that for a moment. also how it said it made you feel in the book that history had a face to face had the power to touch a conscience. Was that just drew me in curious. If you could speak about that. Sure so i was. I grew up in mobile On the in the southern part of alabama part of a a an old white southern family entrenched in the status quo. Good paypal and i was taught never to mistreat anybody but at the same time That sense of privilege was all around. And i absorbed that like you. Breathe the air you know. And i as a result head not carefully thought about some of the dramatic news headlines that were taking shape us particularly with regard to the civil rights movement. I mean i knew it was important. I knew it was happening But i had very I had the preoccupations of a kid right. I was fascinated by sports. And was i wasn't very good at it myself. But you know dabbled in it even even at that. And then i went on a high school field trip to birmingham and saw martin luther king being arrested by two birmingham policemen and they were trading in roughly in disrespectfully. Not i wouldn't say it was police brutality but but it was just a kind of districts disrespectful and i thought on the edge of violence kind of moment as they were shoving him along toward a police paddy wagon and it just so happened that they shoved him right past where i was standing on the sidewalk with a couple of my friends from mobile and i just found myself looking into the face of martin luther king. Three feet away through no premeditation. A no planning. No no nothing. I i knew vaguely that there were demonstrations happening but i didn't expect to encounter them and there there was and i thought i saw i mean who knows what he was really feeling but i thought i saw this deep sadness in dr king's very expressive is and i don't know all of a sudden It it was like it was like he was the face of history. I mean i didn't quite have those words for it but it was. It was all of a sudden human and real in a way that it had not been before. And i would love to say that. I knew exactly. Then what think about all of this. And that i became a committed civil rights activists on the spot. I i didn't. I just became a troubled kid on the spot. Who knew that something was amiss in in our corner of the world assenting from and i want to ask another question dr king because this is a little sane in the book that i think adds a little something to to the to. What actually happened that. I wasn't aware so it has to do with his speech You know have a dream speech The march on washington. And i always thought as you hear about it over and over again. That was sort of a central planned tenet to what he was going to say that day. But but you're sitting you're writing about and it struck me that it was unrehearsed. The mahalia jackson's decide saying tell them about the dream. Martin tell them about the drain. And as i thought about that i just wondered is that also one way to think about the sixties. There was a period. There was sort of unrehearsed as it. Sorta unleashed all this change on the world. I think absolutely. That's that's right King had had used that. I have a dream riff. That he did in that speech a time or two before But but he hid he was going through more of a plodding text up until that point. And i guess we don't know if he would eventually come to it but mahalia jackson who had sung at the march and was one of his good friends was standing right next to him and she thought it just needed more. Umph and so she whispers. Are you know gives you a mistake. Whisper and says tell them about the dream martin and so he does and the rest is history. I think that those kind of human anecdotes that just you know that make Historical figures real to me or you know they. They just add.

So i repeat a little bit of what we were talking about earlier. But it's early in the season. Still even though hendrick motorsports is. It's all the talk right now. We've still got a lot of racing left to do. And so i think we should temper a little bit of these championship expectations. You know got a lot of road courses still coming up. That could potentially come down to winners. Still so yeah. I think that's where i leave it. Are they peaking soon gonna be interesting to see next up from nbc sports dust along. Well thanks if you can adults me for a moment. I'd like to talk since. I'm not sure he'll be here in a couple of weeks and who knows we'll be back ever again so oh well okay. Were certainly looking forward to it and really excited about the opportunity to be back in Show the races and and with the schedule the way it is the sheer. I certainly a lot of neat things. Obviously opening at nashville superspeedway. The first time for the cup series road america on july fourth america and even in the track name You know for the cup series. The first time the cup series will be there since nineteen fifty six. You've got the indycar Doubleheader with nascar with the at indianapolis on the road course in august and certainly then leads into the the regular season finale daytona and into the playoffs so You know there's a lot of great things coming up. It's been exciting to be in some of these meetings and some of the things that folks are gonna see. Obviously at nashville. Going to see brad paisley. He'll be a big part of our broadcast There so something a little bit different. We'll still have dale. We'll let the bosses know you read the denies promo there. You go there you go please. Do we look forward to be fun and a two week break for the olympics. I you know mighty rivers start with little drops coming together and i remember the days. Yes i am old. I remember the days nearly forty years ago when rick hendrick was on the verge of shutting down. His racing operation called all star racing and abandoning his dream of owning a race team. Hendrick enlisted jeffrey. But on his driver. And the wily veteran crew chief harry hyde. They were working at a high shop. It was a relatively small one and acquired piece of land that was hidden away in the woods about a mile charlotte boater speedway after crashing out darlington in the seventh race of the was about to give in at shut down the operation. Then bodine won at martinsville. He ended up with three wins that year. Two years later hendrika two cars. They were running full-time and nine wins between them now. Is they become the witness organization cup history with thirteen championships to boot. It's amazing to think. How close rick hendrick was shutting things down. It shouldn't be a surprise that he's whether a two and a half year drought only to merge better than before and all that piece of land. That.

"This week we go back to cinema for the first time since two thousand nineteen. That's right add to take the year off last year I mentioned chase elliott up the siren and the dawson ville pool hall. You mission martin. Church junior certain two of the favorites going on into this week. But i tell you a guy that i'm gonna keep an eye on and i think he's a guy that one of the guys. I think that's going to be desperate for win this week. Kurt busch a lot of success at cinema. He's one of the top guys. If you look nascar stats. He's one of the top guy nassar's nascar stats at the cinema. And now kurt busch sitting there nineteenth in points. He could be super aggressive this weekend and get himself a win. Well i think one of the big things is you look at Kurt busch one of those drivers that Outside a playoff spot going into six hundred and you look at the guys that were seventeen top. Sixteen it seventeenth on back and like all those guys just had rough racist mad to benedetto The pit strategy to stay out longer than the first strategy ten laps longer than than than the eventual winner. Kyle larson hoping for the cautioned. Didn't get it you know falls. Lap down has to fight for a long time to get his lap back later loses lap again You look at kurt. Busch ross chastain were guys outside that spot and You know the coca cola. Six hundred is like the worst race to have a bad night because with the extra stage there are more points out there for everybody and so instead of a maximum points being sixty at seventy for that race and kurt. Busch and ross chastain. Walk away with one point each and So that was really tough. But i think when you talk about kurt busch you know for as rough as it has been this season and certainly. This is a rough stretch for that group over at chip ganassi racing. It's pretty simple for them. It's their eighty seven back with eleven races to go. Yes there's time they could catch up on points but let's be honest is probably not going to happen So it's win. it's gamble it's it's it's it's. It's throw hail. Marys and see what sticks and if it doesn't stick and so be it because the last race in the regular season is daytona and you know what i'd put money on kurt busch daytona. He's won their He runs up front and and has success there that You know. I'll tell you what this this daytona race in august. 'cause you know with the way. The gap is from sixteen to seventeen points. I'll tell you what there's a lot of guys out there. That are just going to be the hail marys and desperation and certainly we saw some of that last year and again that's why that race was moved there in that position and know if i'm chip ganassi racing yes. I'm disappointed frustrated. But you're right. You look at what kurt busch can do. And you look at some of the tracks And i think there's some places that lineup even if not everything lines up i looked at daytonas like hey you know what we we. They've still got daytona and they've still got a really good shot there. Get you look at current leaders in laps led at sonoma's kurt busch number two behind martin tricks junior look at laps in the top. Fifteen kurt busch is number one at cinema right now but of course alex also older than most of the guys out there. But that's beside the point. But i mean we didn't see a real aggressive race at kota like when we thought we were going to an and part of that may have been to do with the rain just a little bit. Who knows enemy. Just been the way the track lays out will you. Do you think. We'll see especially with the carousel back yet again. This is the second is the second time we've run. The carousel d. Think we might see more aggressive driving. Now that you know we're we are getting closer to the end of the regular season guys to dust as point realized that win is their best shot to get to the playoffs. Yeah well and i don't think you can really look at quotas like kind of an outline promote. We're gonna see this phone course this weekend because it was just such a like literal wash rate. It was just pouring rain and and you couldn't see that type of racing that i think what we're going to see the sunday which is yes probably being more aggressive and kind of two dozen was talking about before too. I mean that. I don't think at this point in the season. We're really going to see guys need multiple winds to be in the playoffs now that we've had repeat winners this many times and so it's going to take. Is that kind of one win. Situation and and kurt. Kurt busch could be a guy that does that because he you know. He was last season in sort of a similar scenario where he was on the bubble one at las vegas and is in the playoffs. And so i you know. I think him some of these other guys tyler. Rettig potentially that that maybe austin dillon's another guy on the bubble that has been putting together some some good races so yeah we could certainly see some more bumping and banging this weekend i'll dust. It used to be for a while. Ah the cinema. We went through years where it was like new winner. New winner new winner. Every you know every year but then mark jerks juniors blown that out of the water the last couple of years. He's the two-time defending winner at cinema and yet there are guys out there who are pretty good road course racers. We don't have not like it used to be you guys. You know pitting on gilligan's island out there remember those days. I remember those days but but chase elliott's never wanted cinema. Yeah look i mean. There's there's a lot of good ones you mentioned. Kurt busch earlier me finished fourth of the daytona road course earlier this year. Yeah look did anybody would have. Anybody picked kirk christopher bell to win that race so now obviously chase was You know running well and then a pit stop. They didn't get out as quick. Fell back a little bit some car state out now. Suddenly the restarting said of the front like tenth and kind of get collected some stuff and beaten and knocked around so Yeah you know anything can happen especially if the cautions fallen right and so forth and and and the tight you have tire wear and that changes things So yeah i i'm anticipating. I'm looking forward to see what we're going to find out what we're see this weekend You know at cinema there certainly are some type places. There are places to put the bumper What was it was years ago. It was at stewarton hamlin. Did that like journal. That was attornal. One lap after the next a hamlet hamlet. No ham on the last lap hamlin got Steward and seven. That the was at the right hander before the is And then stewart returned the favor and the An internal levin coming to upcoming off to the start finish line and said like hey. He made it open season. I'm i'm glad i i'm more than happy to race that way. Exactly l. in another road course made road course it makes sense. Yeah and and you've got road. America coming up on the schedule here in a few weeks july fourth weekend yet so haven't fun it Lot of stuff going on right now. We'll come back white flag laps..

Kyle larson nineteenth six hundred sixteen seventeenth sixty last year Kurt las vegas Sixteen Kurt busch two-time seventy This week tyler ten laps seventeen points this week second two thousand

"A tight gibbs alex's run six races in the xfinity series this year he has five top five finishes and two wins winning this past weekend at charlotte also run the daytona road. Course joe gibbs grandson and the kid i understand and people will say oh. Yeah he's just driving the best car. He's driving good equipment. There's no doubt about that. But he's winning and running top five in that really good equipment and that says something that self doesn't it i mean it. Does it says this kid can raise. He's only eighteen but not be able to be plugged in like that even in good equipment and still post is winning finishes i i think it silences some of that that talk of. Oh you know. He's coming in and just daddy's money type thing you know he. I think he's proved as proved himself in the series so far. What do you think dustin. Yeah i mean you know it's it's it's a remarkable start to his nascar career to wins in the first six races and he's done a lot of fantastic things he's he's made a lot of Big moves the certainly the move that it was off into the grass and daytona at the road course was was quite a move off a restart There's there's a lot of things that he's doing well he still needs experience. I mean that's why these arca races are still important to getting laps and he still needs to learn and be able to put himself in different situations. It's just like you know where he's talking about the indianapolis five hundred well You know that was a battle between Ellul castro neves who was in his twenty first indianapolis five hundred and Alex polo who was in a second. And you know that was even talked about after the race that it was. You know i think simon pageant saying that that alex polo showed his cards too early and castro nevis was sitting there and knew what to do and i think the whole comment was made was it. It was as one person was playing chess and the other person was playing checkers. And that's based off experience and tie gives done a lot of great things And he's had some good battles but he also needs that experience i think. What's interesting with with the gibbs folks is that you know they still are seem to be restrained in how they're doing it It's not like hayes only twelve to fourteen races. Hey let's get them in in another car and run the rest of the season Or let's try to get another car out there and now certainly some that's related to sponsorship. Because he's running race without sponsorship so You know. I like what he's doing and it's a good first step and what the what joe gibson and and coy and what they're doing and trying to be very cautious and take their time and not rush him up there. I think it's going to be in chintzy. What the next step is you know. Obviously they didn't they went straight without going to the truck series and that was unique approach to it You know you gotta figure it okay. So next year. he's he would should be fulltime xfinity. You anticipate and is a year and and a third year and a half enough to move up to cop or is it. stay a couple years Type thing and then go from there and also that factors into the cup driver. Situation is for toyota. When you get you know a couple three years down the road while the think maybe they learned their lesson. Alex with you know. Obviously you know we remember that. They push joy llegado into the into the cup series admittedly before he was ready and that kinda backfired on him he's thrived since he went to pinski Same type thing for daniel suarez pushed him into copy early because carl edwards stepped away. So i mean maybe now they're looking at ties saying we don't wanna push him too soon. We've seen what happens when you do. Yeah i mean. I think there is that kind of fine line of giving him enough experience but not putting him into so many reasons where he's not going to be successful and then it's going to backfire in that way you were talking about and dustin mentions like those moments still i mean. I think we even saw that on saturday. He spun pretty early in the race there and was still able to drive back to a winning finish. But how can you sort of forward then eliminate those wrecks that come early earned so yeah i mean i think it's fine line. Of how many are you going to enter them in. I think that i. I don't think it would hurt them to see him in more races. Now that he's kind of been able to prove that he can drive these cars and do what he's done but you know that's gotta be tempered with sponsorship and these other drivers that are raising them. I say he's a pretty heady kid. Dustin i'd a chance to interview on the start finish line after the race and you know he was still running the arca race on. Saturday turns the crowd and he goes. Don't go anywhere. We got another one coming up later on. I mean being the crime. Let the credit helping to be playing promoter. While he's doing the whole thing he's learning he's learning and then he goes out and kills the field in the race. And i'll tell you one of the things that's also interesting is as you look at. How long to put him in there. You think about you know. Austin cedric is the reigning expanding series champion. And he was back in the expanding series this year for for penske to as opposed to you know they could have you know maybe could put him in the wood brother's car instead of having benedetto Based off that success you look at You know certainly you know chase briscoe. Was there for a couple years and working his way up and certainly look at the challenges. That chase birth goes add. Now the rookies of had. This is not an easy time for a rookie. Because there's no testing there's no at right now there's no practice. Obviously next year they'll be practice More races and i wanted to support at every race in. That should be helpful. It's still not going to be as much. I don't think as what it was. I don't think you're gonna see too. Many three day shows with with practice only on friday and the qualifying saturday and practice in the race on sunday. They gonna be today shows and condensed schedule so I think laps are important. And for thai gibbs i think you know for an austin syndrich. I think he'd probably tell you maybe for as much as he liked to be up at cup that he also recognizes how important it is to get laps. And i think it's going to be interesting with these these xfinity drivers to once they move up Especially next the next gen car that composite body You can beat the wall down a little bit. And and there's the forgiveness as opposed to the steel body cup cars. And you know. I one thing. I'm going to be intrigued about. is you know. Look at how. What ty tyler. Ruddick has done was seven top tens last nine races. But that's a guy that likes running the wall. How much do things change for him. Next year with the composite body car and You know one of the guys that really can make a big impact because he had so much success in expanding car and had developed line..

daniel suarez Alex polo Ruddick Alex sunday friday saturday joe gibbs Saturday eighteen five six races next year first six races joe gibson this year Austin cedric twenty first Next year daytona road

"Prep mcmillan glad to have you with us. And the dust and mr indiana mr hoosier. Mr trump sorry. Mr. hoosier I tell you it had to warm. Your heart was i. That was one of the coolest celebrations to watch delio. Castro neves become a four time winner of the indy. Five hundred equaling the big. I'll answer ed. J foyt and rick mears in the four timers club and that it was amazing to watch. The crowd loved it. And of course that. Indy indy speedway. Just if you've never had a chance to go there it's the front stretches at canyon for most of it withstands on both sides and he was running up and down. I mean guy just drove five hundred miles. They'd gets up and runs up and down up and down the track waving to the fans and cliven the fence. it was just. It was amazing but one of the great personalities in the sport and it was just. It was the first win for that organization. Yeah from Michael shank racing and You know i'll tell you what it's It was it was a great moment. Certainly the indie fans in certainly embrace. You know dr certain drivers in particular. Obviously anybody from indiana is going to get a big cheer. Ed carpenter connor daily. I mean it was. You know when you're watching the broadcast the loud roar of the crowd when conor daly took the lead for the first time in his career at indianapolis motor speedway. Elliot's one of those favorites. Tony qanon Just because of their infectious personality and how much How much you know. The people feel like they can connect to to to both those guys they just kind of have this personality that it's like you've met them and if if infant and fifteen seconds it's like you've been friends for years and it's not like you've just met them and so they both make you feel that way. They both reach out. They both have this these bubbling personalities. That and a lot of things that people can relate to. So certainly you know. They are favorites at indiana in indianapolis. And you know it was fun watching the watching the the broadcast When i got to the other night is just that you know what elliott took the league for the first time and you could see the crowd and you could hear the crowd when when they made the announcement the in on the pa system that elliott just taking the lead you could hear it throughout the whole facility and it it is neat and it is You know. India has its special Connections between the fans and the drivers and and and certainly for those two in the fans you know. That's that's this group. I mean. Obviously if marco andretti had taken the leader won the race You know the emotion would been fantastic. I'm sure out of him and out of the crowd because they just know the andretti name andretti legacy and you know. People want to say the andretti curse at indianapolis so Yeah it was it was. It was so much. It was so amazing to see that as an athlete. And you know we don't you don't really appreciate how much these athletes put into winning these races. We don't see the preparation. We don't see the things behind the scenes and yet you often see how how much it means. I even think When willpower one mean he was not somebody who is known to be as emotional when he won the indianapolis five hundred a you know i still have the memory of him in victory lane just his arms out in his fist out and and just the big smile and he's just like really all excited and just like you're like wow. You've never seen that a willpower before. But it's indianapolis and all the time and all the effort that goes into it. Same thing with elliot and just with the fan reaction. It was You know it was really neat to see spiderman return and and climbed the fence and alex it was one of those things and we heard a lot of the nascar drivers talk about just the feeling of having fans back in the stands even not full stands but just that energy that fans are bringing back and and for the indycar series. I don't know that you could written a better script with a better star. That elliott castro. Neves win at indianapolis. I mean i think it gives them a boost not just to the series because any oh they'll a rising tide raises all boats. You know this is good for racing in general to have elliott cash. Nervous win at indianapolis. I think it gives us a whole series of boost especially as fans are coming back. Yeah well i mean definitely and i think the the racing itself to it was. It was a fun race to watch. It was exciting to watch and then to cap it that way with him. Winning in front of one hundred thirty five thousand people back. I mean i was. I was talking about this. I was driving into charlotte motor speedway getting ready for the coq six hundred and they were playing it on on the screen here. And you know it wasn't the typical you cokes pre coke. Six hundred watched the end of the indy. Five hundred but you still felt the emotions. I'm driving in. I'm a bunch of fans coming back to the race. Track to and so. I think the drivers certainly noticed that and feel that is well being able to now again. See these fuller grandstands and interact with people and that translates into what they're doing on the track. I think you know they give their given that extra boost in momentum and kind of excitement. That's why they're doing. This right is is for these fans it does what was going on pit road as a pit reporter. What was going on pit road. Pit road with it indy. Heck well i mean we see that a number times before i mean so narrow. It's so tough we even saw it in the nascar race. What was the last year with. you know. Was it the the incident at the end of the road with just an all guy was in the forty eight that weekend. Jimmy johnson was out the j. t. g. cars got collected in it and it was just like a you know One blinis crew members got hit and it was injured. I think for the rest of the season at that point. So indies really a narrow pit road and Yeah i mean you you you know. I know of a few years ago of being at the indy..

"For the sport. I got the answer all the money. A young guy cheaper but if they can bring sponsorship the matter how old they are to some extent to some extent d agree. Well i mean. I think what you're going to see is probably this like balancing effect. Maybe right it's like you've got christopher ballot gibbs with this combination of bunch of veteran drivers. There was the report from the atlantic. This past week. Last week that kurt busch could potentially go to twenty three eleven. Combine with bubba there and bring in some of that veteran veteran leadership experience and that sponsorship and that's something denny hamlin's talked about it at point is trying to have a veteran driver in a perfect world having that mix between a veteran driver in a younger driver. So that would work. In that situation that comes to fruition. Now go ahead well. I think that you know. I don't know if it's going to be this full sport pivot potentially but it's going to maybe continue to be this balance and then this all right if we haven't established guy in there to bring some of that experience and combined with some of these younger drivers and i i think you've got that experience at hendrick on the crew chief side with chad canals to i mean overseeing everything there it's not like they're lacking leadership in any sense on the team side or competition and i think alex is right in the sense that you know there may not be that pivot because there are so many different ways of doing it but think it'll come down to like what what you're saying is is impartially sponsorship and again you look at all forms of motor sports you look at what's happened in indycar and you look at the young drivers that have won there. What for the first five races were won by drivers twenty. Four and under obviously ellie castro. Neves forty six years old wins the indianapolis five hundred in one of the oldest drivers to do so. But a youth is really. There's a big youth movement in indycar. Were certainly seen me. Look chase elliott winning the championship last year. We're seeing some younger drivers having success We have sponsors look at that in how companies In the sport or how to companies maybe not in the sport look at how they could use a youthful driver to reach a particular market. If that's that works for them. So yeah i think you know at the end of the day. There's so many different ways doing alex. I think you're right is there may not be that full on pivot And it makes but again it may come down to sponsorship like you were talking about brett and if a lot of companies come in and say i want young. Then that's what a lot of car owners are going to do. Well in one thing we're kendrick did do this year. Which is unusual for a kendrick went outside the organization make a crew chief higher. He went and got rudy. Fugel out of kabul motor sports doubt william byron because they had a history with each other and it's paid come off spate well and that that was a choice. I think that william almost left into william byron's hands to say. Hey i want this guy to be my crew chief this year and it's i mean it certainly paid off for them. I think they're probably the one of the most consistent running teams in the series right now So yeah that that history has has obviously translated to on the track. And i mean and i think that that that was smart on hendrix part to say you know what will leave it up to the driver and probably chad canal. Saying you know we've worked. We've worked together but my time up is here. Who do you want to be your next guy in dustin right now at rick has got something going on. That has rarely happened. All four cars running will usually. It's three the fourth. One tends to struggle but right now he's got all four running. Well yeah and and the the you know again you know. We're talking early june. The playoffs aren't until september so It's great that they're running well at this point season. But what's it gonna be like an playoffs and and look this domination. The last three weeks where you look at the numbers and they've essentially lead about ninety percent of the laps at the last three races Dover coda and charlotte. Those are not playoff tracks now again. There's things you can learn you can carry over And certainly they've had success as you as you noted that cows one at at las vegas And alex one at richmond. Those are playoff tracks. But if you look at some of the numbers. They have not led as many laps at Some playoff tracks. So i i kind of temper this. It's like this is an impressive run right now but how long. How long can it be sustained. And is it something you know as one person from another organization asked me after the race are might they be peaking too soon who well time will tell. It is interesting though. One little trivia note is you know hendrick gets the two hundred and sixty ninth win. The five car does it. The five car also got his first win. Jeff jeffrey bodine martinsville. That was all star racing. I used to have an all star racing add. It may be an a trunk somewhere. My house somebody tried to buy. I tried to sell it once. I thought this'll be good investment. I'll get a lot of money for this. Because it's like hendrix original organiser. Yes somebody offered me like five cents for once. How wonder. I wonder if richard petty has an all star racing. Don't think a little bit. Maybe i should get richt autograph. Still have maybe maybe then it will be something autograph too when we come back. Dustin brought it up elliott cash..

"Heck of your record hold so just feels awesome crown jewel event. I think ring or something later. Probably so i'm. I'm extremely happy. I don't know if you've got a reaganite or not alex. But he does get the win. That puts hendrick motorsports two hundred sixty nine winds passing passing petty enterprises. And rick said he goes. We had a lot more winning to do a lot more racist to go here and She could be favorites this week going at the cinema. Certainly chase elliott on road courses always a favourite but martin tricks junior martin george junior but he does not dry for motors he will be favourite also But you know when you look at hedrick motorsports they have consistently over the years to me been an organization that has avoided the deep valleys when you had the the hills and valleys until a couple years ago. Then they seem to get in. That valley took a long time to get out of but boy they bounced back with a vengeance. Yeah well i mean. And i think that this was kind of the plan rate. Is you've got these young drivers coming in trying to set that precedent in a next wave a little bit and it going into next year with a new car. At least they've got these young drivers that they're going to be able to kind of build on and you know potentially win a lot more championships with you know. We all thought a year ago when chevy came out with the new car we thought. Well what are you guys do. And for one year coming out with an updated chevy but turned out to be a stroke of genius because now they're using it for two years center. They're killing it right now. Well i mean you talk about the the the peaks and valleys in how hendrick motorsports hasn't has many valleys But certainly they did when when that car came out and the chevrolet car was not as good as the toyota and ford at the and rick talked about that even as recently as a couple of weeks ago and so they just. They just didn't have a car that could perform and that led to their issues. They've certainly had a better car that you know. They've got good drivers. They've been able to put things together and look at the look at what the results are. So far this season so You know. Rick hendry can that organization as your use. You say it's more ups and downs. But certainly they had some downs of a couple years ago and i think a lot of it was centered on that car and as things change You know that's become a benefit of it. Like you say has been only used that car. I second year which nobody anticipated. You know when when chevy came out with them on the is got obviously thirteen championships. Eleven of those belong to jimmy. Johnson and jeff gordon combined Terry levine has got one and chase. Elliott has one. But alex you mentioned the youth. I don't think hendrick motorsports has ever been as a whole as young as they are right now. When you look at the four drivers they have they. They can keep these guys together. They're set for the next fifteen years or so. I mean i think tyler was kind of laughing at the beginning of the season like it's weird to be the oldest driver on his team for the first time right and so and and even as early as like last week they were talking. You know they're able to do their first in person driver meetings again and we're all kind of talking about how a quiet group of guys to so it'll be interesting to see which of them potentially emerges as the leader and you know i. It really could be any of them at this point. I don't know if there is one of those leadership veteran voices really that they have right now like they did. And jimmy johnson. How do you think the personalities of the four mesh together dustin. I mean they seem to so far i i tell you what i think. One thing that interests me about. This whole issue is rick hendrick. Because of his success is a game changer. You know he was one who brought in jeff gordon and at the time you didn't bring in young drivers and put them in really good equipment. They had to come into the sport being in backmarkers and prove their worth and after a few years then they got that opportunity. Rick changed the whole formula there with with jeff and then it became. You know you gotta look at all the other car. Start looking at younger drivers. You look at what You know that that team had with the rainbow warrior's the dedicated pit crew. Wait a minute now. All these other teams had to do it eventually. Robert gates racing in basically buying out those guys and bringing them over to their team. So you have those types of things this type of young organization. There's there's different ways of doing it in the sport for sure but will this lead if they continued have success and remarkable amount of success will discontinue this lead other owners to focus more on youth In the future as opposed to you know You know. One of my colleagues nbc. Sports david smith. He does motor sports analytics. He'll tell you that the the statistics show that a driver reeks reaches their peak year at age. Thirty nine will owner still. If if young guys have the success will owners still look at that and think. Hey you know. I can still get somebody in their late. Thirty s mid to late thirties. And they still can be somebody. That's that's very valuable to my organization. It like i need. I need three twenty three year. Olds i need i need. I need a nineteen year old. I need a twenty year old. Does the game change that much. I mean obviously you look at the success of what denny hamlin's done what kevin harvick style. What's called bush's don't what martin Junior has done. I mean you look for all this. Youth tracks is the winningest driver. This season with three wins. So i'll be interested to see if this is continued success. Is this a game changing moment again..

"Hey yeah we've got this off figure it out let's just let's just cruise now because there's still a lot of work going on over there the number five team. Well you know he'd come in alex. You talked about for three straight second place. Finishes kyle larson. He's at nine stage wins. And you'll hear drivers say you know if they're not winning but they're fast this. I'm not worried because i'm fast. The winds will come sooner or later for collars that certainly the case and the thing is for his standpoint. He was battling his teammates. Most of the time. Oh yeah. I mean well. I think that this is a race to the coq. Six hundred is the race that martin tricks. You was sort of talking about this beforehand is. You can't really give up that track position at any point. It's so hard to battle back after losing it and so this is something he was saying. That became so important played into larson's win was being able to kind of fend off some of his teammates there at the end. And so how that plays i mean. I think it's going to be motivating for the rest of those guys. I don't think chase elliott lakes finishing second to teammate. So i i mean i think this is gonna continue to be a very interesting battle amongst four drivers at at least for these upcoming stretch of races here. You know we talk about the six hundred being the the ultimate test of man and machine and and a lotta guys we've seen over the years win the coke five hundred word around when we clicked off six hundred miles but this car is for the most part of become bulletproof. The drivers are in such good shape. They don't really lose much over that last hundred miles. But i think the difference is become that you're now throwing in an extra pitstop or two and we saw no with the case of joy. Lagaras had had a lose tire Harbor cataluna so you're seeing the errors by pit crews affect these teams. And i know it's going to manifest itself next year when we go to the one lug but i mean that's where i think the pressure on the pit crews really and the pit crews shine is when you got a pit crew. Like kyle larson keeps knocking off. These great stops all night long and getting him that track position. Yeah and it's again. It's you're right. It's it's it's this test of people's what it is and a lot of different situations. And you know. Kyle larson pitino. A pit crew responded In this situation remember dover it was they. They went in and and lost the lead on the last on the late. Pitstop alex bowman got it got track position and the cars were so equal just so difficult to pass. Dover larson couldn't get by again so You know there was a case where the difference was pit road was dover when against larsson here was a case of pit road worked out well kept him in position kept him in in in control the situation so he had commanded he could dictate things and force other people to react to him as opposed to having to react to others and having to run a different line. You know maybe getting more in the pj want running a different line because somebody's blocking the low lying having to do something different. He had control and again. That goes back to everything. Running right everything. You're not making the mistakes. The crews doing what they have to do in this case they did the job. Alex i know is you've watched the sport the last couple of years and learning the sport i love the people aspect of it. Is it surprised you how much of a part the pit crews play in this whole thing. Yeah well i. I don't think those can be understated. And i think that you know what i sort of learned in this past year and a half now is just how much of a team sport it really is. Even if you know the the drivers are obviously the focus and that's everyone's cheering on. But you you know. Larson wouldn't have been able to win this. If those pitstops hadn't been on point but i will say one other thing we're talking about this too. Is i mean something. That i think was really hindered larson early. This season was those speeding penalties at some of these tracks. I mean i think phoenix was the one where he had a couple in one race. I think phoenix was one. He's still ended up finishing seventh. Or something and you haven't seen those in these past couple of races whereas knocked off these seventh place finisher so yeah like the the pit crew for sure. It was huge to that on sunday. But then i think you've also sort of seen him cleaning up a little bit of these mistakes as well as a driver. Yeah he's running great right now and of course the whole hendrick team's running great and old man is a fact. They said a big record on sunday night as they become the winningest organization in cup history. We'll talk about that. When the rally reporters comes back on life out reilly auto parts get.

During my undergraduate days it was a transformative experience for me in terms of journalism. In that kind of being my calling. I spent about ten years as a reporter mostly at the charlotte observer covering local news and then came back about ten years later to the daily tar heel as the newsroom adviser much like christie was saying i really wanted to give more students kind of the experience and the opportunities that i had a student. And that's what appealed to me about becoming a professional staff member in college media. I spent nine years as the newsroom adviser. Mostly focusing on newsroom. The last three and a half years. I've been the general manager which is a a more comprehensive role that oversees the nonprofit that publishes the daily tar heel.

Political Ad Campaign from The Gap Strikes Sour Note with Twitter Users

"These days. It's become almost mandatory to declare your company a purpose driven brand but owen said it would be easy. Take the gap for example last wednesday the day after election day. Remember that oh what feels like about a year ago. The gap came forward with a message of unity to this divided. Country on social media posted an image of its classic hoodie. But this one was navy on one side. Red on the other click. The image in zipper brought the two sides together. The accompanying message. The one thing we know is that together. We can move forward sitting berkeley alongside the text. We're two hearts one red one blue this while the united state of anxiety was just beginning to hold its breath waiting for ballot counts in court battles. The gaps message felt so flat that you might say no one voted for it. With the exception of a hapless brand manager who suggested it and the yes people in the boardroom who had thought it was a good idea as add weeks. catherine lunchroom wrote the hoodie. Mashup was greeted with almost exclusive derision. Many on social media criticized the gap for being tone death at such a tense moment. Lindstrom noted the common sentiment across to the new york times. The gap utterly failed to read the room within an hour. The gap deleted. It's post a brand representative assured the new york times that the sweatshirt existed as an image only they had no intention of selling it in a statement sent to several publications. Los Angeles study suggests virus much more widespread

"Here Los Angeles there's a study out of Los Angeles and the study may blow up every other study and in the country every other model that we've looked at and so on Los Angeles study suggests virus much more widespread what what is that another headline Los Angeles corona virus outbreak may be more widespread than confirmed with lower results Los Angeles studies suggest virus much more widespread the Charlotte observer and Kaiser health news in Los Angeles antibody testing suggests coronavirus cases could be forty times higher than official count this is the that Kaiser health news all right odd that they may have an agenda of some kind I'm not sure they everybody does I suppose we haven't known the true extent of the code nineteen affection infections in our community because we have only tested people with symptoms and the availability availability of tests has been limited said that Neeraj issued a professor of public policy at the university of southern California and he's the lead researcher on the study he says the numbers back up what post public health experts have been saying about the confirmed cases being only the tip of the iceberg now that's one way of putting it but that might be the inverse way of of putting up that might be upside down the way of putting it the Los Angeles Times for their part says that given the numbers some four point one percent of adults tested positive for corona virus antibodies in a study of Los Angeles county residents health officials said on Monday suggesting the rate of infection may be forty times higher than the number our can of confirmed cases these serology tests conducted by the university of southern California researchers on eight hundred sixty three people indicate the death rate from the pandemic could be lower than previously thought but also that the respiratory illness may be maybe being spread more widely by people who showed no symptoms now this is fascinating for a number of reasons all right and then the LA times goes on to say you know that translates roughly two hundred twenty one thousand to four hundred and forty two thousand adults who have recovered from an infection this is in Los Angeles county all right once the margin of error is taken into account according to the researchers conducting the study that we're talking about up to four hundred and forty two thousand people in Los Angeles county that have been infected but it also means that the mortality rate may be a small fraction of what we currently think it is or was or maybe or or words along those lines because everything changes every day in the story the numbers change every day the numbers are unreliable and the Associated Press with an estimated three hundred and twenty thousand adults in Los Angeles county may have been infected with the corona virus according to preliminary results from the U. S. the study and the study was conducted April tenth and eleventh that's a good because it's recent and you wanted to be more recent rather than more distant USA and they estimated approximately four point one percent of the county's adult population of eight million people has antibodies of the virus okay so maybe as many as four hundred and forty thousand people and they have ranges from two point eight percent to five point six percent that may have been exposed to the virus and have the inspection but you see in the end that would be really good news on one level because it would mean the percentage of people dying from the virus would be much much smaller than previously thought and that's that'd be a real interesting real good news so how do you track that I don't know because this afternoon the numbers will change again I've been watching this for quite some time now and that's how that's how this thing works is the numbers change every day and and it's not they don't just like go up like they're more today than yesterday some days there are fewer today than yesterday and that makes it difficult and

"Hi Scott filer joins us from the Charlotte observer and we're going to talk about the Panthers a little bit as they go into the weekend and obviously the stories about cam Newton status going into their game at Arizona on Sunday Scott thanks for coming on events that preceded it what is the latest on this injury that apparently occurred last week in that terrible performance he put on against Tampa in Charlotte. right yes the had a in their twenty to fourteen lost the Tampa where they drop the into he re aggravated his foot injury but from what Ron Rivera told us in his press conference today in cam was not available but Rivera said that campaign to him only after the game and said his foot was sore and re aggravated again so only at that point did they know that he was he was hurt but he's been in and out of a walking boot apparently some time over the last few days you know he's in we have been the injury was not at practice today and and was inside in the stadium re having so no sign of him he was he was re having and then they have other guys as well like short and times and they were practicing but they also or are banged up is is that accurate and then Irvine as a hammy. all of that is accurate and yes there but you know really they're not and for this time of year I would say they were mostly pretty healthy other than KM who's been a question mark. from the first moment that he stepped on the field in the pre season I advocated not playing about all of the pre season of course they don't listen to me over there but they did play him in the third preseason game in on the eleventh snap of that game he heard this but while getting fact and that but then put a Madison practices and then I guess it was okay in the first game where they barely lost to the ramp actually played pretty well and then in the second game you know this very poor performance that they put up against Tampa was wary he heard it again I think they will start calling Allen this weekend they have not said that that that would certainly be my socks sell us got bother with this from the observer in Charlotte on CBS sports radio you know when you watch him play like as I watched both games and I thought that it against the rams I I thought they looked good I thought he looked decent nothing spectacular but there was no signs of me saying you know well that surgery didn't work he's a mass but when I watch him play against Tampa last week I think everyone on a national level saw and had some level of concern about how poorly he played and how poorly he threw the ball I mean he was overthrowing receivers by ten yards and I mean literally missing guys but I mean guys that were wide open he was throwing it on the ground behind him over their heads by ten years what was I watching it was a disaster. yeah and the weird thing is the three for three hundred thirty three yards despite all that and not agree with you I think read it that somewhere that goes from a B. S. P. N. stats that you missed fifteen open receivers in that game in there were there were even some balls that were completed like a forty four yard early to Curtis Samuel if thrown in stride which is not an easy throw but if thrown in stride probably gone for seventy five and touchdown is a little under throw you look like you could throw the deep ball okay but worry this was of short intermediate routes I think the plot was affecting them I think that he wasn't planting well this is left but so is you know is coming forward throwing but. I think that had you know something to do with that but cam of course has never been the world's most accurate quarterback and has always been the world's really you know faster next best ever running quarterback in that part of his games has been lost at least temporarily and that's why I think right now just it looks so average how is got a power with us from his relatives ever how like when you saw that play line up in that it basically wildcat to snap into McCaffrey when you were watching that play at I mean how obvious was it that they were going to I mean give the bottom and then he was just gonna run for his life instead of as you know normally you would have seen new number the topper Newton threw it behind his tackles are you know rolling out and doing something different I mean how obvious was that played I thought the play call this pathetic. well I thought that it did show that cam because you're right at that point you know Tampa Bay he really gonna messed it up and head back to back time outs if you remember which caused ray late game so it went from fourth in about. you know to a fourth in about eighteen inches and even with that they did not sneak KM and that just you know they tried earlier in the game on another for the one that tried to do kind of a read option role about he was tackled short you know we've got negative two rushing yards after two games and that really to me more than anything else tells you something is is up something something's wrong a mini is thirty years old even as ninety year and he's taken a whole lot of yes and he's very tired of being hurt so again I think though I think they'll sit in this week I think it might be multiple weeks again this. chelation but after having covered his whole career here and listen to repair for nine years here talk about cam to me right now they're kind of at a crossroads probably need to sit him down wow Scott bother with this you know. when you you know after the game he sounded like a guy and I this is me thinking back to last Thursday night that he sounded like a god it wasn't quite certain of what it just happened in the sense of like I'm not sure that I you know I'm living up to you know the code here that I'm doing my job and I had to look at myself and evaluate myself and wonder if I should be you know frankly doing this I mean and not so many words in Portuguese that's what he was saying was any like I mean I does he have it in him anymore to keep doing this it seemed like there was as a sign of maybe he doesn't. now wouldn't go that far I don't think we're in an Andrew luck situation here I I think cam is is that. one of the best competitors I've ever been around I think what it was happening after that game was that you know he was trying very hard to accept full responsibility not to blame anything else. a not blame the injuries he tries very hard not to do that is you know for each is pretty much a usually I mean the Superbowl you know press conference everyone remembers the force was the place where he was pouting through it but generally in the three or four years after that is very much a stand that guy after losses and I thought he was here too but again it's you know that's fine girl fine and good but. can you get the job done and I think what you're saying there is right and that he was sort of questioning themselves saying man can I get this you know I have so many chances out there and they did they had they had the ball in Tampa Bay territory somewhat nine times ended up with four field goals in a safety. do you think that everyone like that the game plan that Tampa had to you know blitz him like crazy and then you know snot McCaffrey with eight in a box basically they never let him do anything the whole game I mean he looked thoroughly frustrated on the bench at the end of that game he looked like he was like hanging his head I think he's a great player and a fantastic guy to watch play football you just incredible but he looked very frustrated last week and and the game plan that the box had you now in this copycat league everyone's going to be doing that aren't dates on now yeah yeah I think you're right I I think they will until you know until proven otherwise and that's why you know I've written a column in fact it's up right now in Charlotte observer dot com I actually think if they play Carl Allen this week in which I think sons point that they will that and in the short term not only in the short term this is somewhat of a blessing in disguise because Callao and healthy you can throw the ball that he's he has gone through some interceptions probably but he is any can run a little bit so I think that they'll be able to maybe not let people load up so much on the Capri because Alan you know he will they can swing around pretty well and he's a he's not obviously compromise injury was this camera has no long term if this really you know works into a long term situation there's problems and all sorts of ways the short term this may actually give them a better chance to win against theirs on you know they I I read your article you talk about how they're going to stack the box against Allen and he can you know because of McCaffrey that he can throw that deep ball anything he's done it before you wrote about the saints game last year we threw a bomb a fifty yard plus bomb and converted that you Ross Perot did their one and nine over their last ten and it does look bad what is the atmosphere like in terms of you know in the locker room and if you. practice and with the fans there now because it is team seems like it's breaking apart. they lost both those games at home this year too and so that you know that's the really hard way to start when you played two games only five days apart and lost them all and they are one in nine in their last ten and the one was calling islands one start against New Orleans last year where they didn't need to win the game but the thanks that played their starters for almost two quarters. and and he performed well there but yeah the atmosphere here not great as you can imagine they it's. a place where they you know this thing not that long ago was winning regularly that won the NFC south three years in a row with the Super Bowl and after twenty fifth thing. they want a bunch of games around here now they're now they're really people don't know what to think they don't know what you know what's coming next the mean will we see a resurrection of cam Newton I'd be a great story you know if he could come back and and you know put him back on his back again but right now lot of things in transition that that's not gonna happen you wrote about great goals in as well what did he say and how's he looking. he's you know he's their oldest player now at age thirty four he looked really good in the Tampa Bay game I thought got loose a couple times the which is not his usual for.
