"The rental car, business or airline business right now, it Zaytun. But there's a group here in Charlotte that's been around 104. Four years. That has raised money for the hard working people, men and women and for families and give the help directly to the families that doesn't go through a middle person or a big fancy group. It's called Goodfellas and Stick. Williams is the current head of good fellows, and he and I work together do power for many, many years, many years ever visit you in Chapel Hill. When you used to be the Chapel Hill branch manager. We had a great time and Peter Pappas It was a long time business person here in Charlotte and has always remember you to help toys for tots here, right Raised toys for four people Christmas. Both of you have really helped so much, And I've been a proud member of Goodfellas for at least 30 years, and every time every year Good fellows meets that's over 2000 people. They made it. The Charlotte Convention Center. That's exactly right in the crime. Belle room the past several years. Let me get both of you all to come right up on the microphone like I am so we can hear you gargle. So stick Tell, tell us how the Goodfellows works and how people can help. Then we'll talk about the ceremony that the unique ceremony we're gonna have tomorrow. Well, thank you, Governor McCrory, or they'll appreciate it Well, so good fellows is one of the most efficient organizations I've ever been exposed to every dollar that we raised during our annual luncheon goes toward helping working families and our sweet spot is Renaissance. Rent assistance. We help with other housing needs and utilities and so forth. But that's the reason that the members really love they know that every dollar that they give during that lunch and ghost to help people Now we have over 2000 members. As you mentioned they pay dues $100 a year. Those deuce A the administrative expenses. We've got to part time employees, thanks to part time Employees Foreign organization and how much do you raise? Typically in a year Last year we raised $1 million. Wow. This year. During this pandemic, we believe in the generosity of the get, fellas. We believe we can do a million dollars again. How many families will you be able to help with that million dollars? That's it least 3000 families. Then that Zmeskal herbal, absolutely 3000 families. We can help in Charlotte with a million dollars and that money goes directly to help pay the rent or the utility bills. Or maybe there God knows they're behind on bills and gaining interest. They fallen behind and they got kids. Almost every one of these stories that you tell me they have Children and the Children. They're innocent victims of this path. Think about this year. One of the great ideas that Peter came up with this shit this year was to give $50,000 each to know von health and to a tree in a trim health. To help their environmental services employees and their dining services employees. Wow. They had to leave their Children at home. Still trying to do schoolwork don't have the access that other Children have. But they had to leave bear Children their families in order to go to the hospital and served and feed the nurses and doctors and staff. But I think Vakarai who's thought about them, They can't do that by zoom. That's right. They can't do that from home. This is another class of people that we've never talked about here on this show. People who actually cafeteria workers at the hospitals who have to feed people. Peter what a great idea because We just take him for granted? Well, we really do. It takes a pandemic like this for everyone to focus on all these people that step up every day to help us in this community. And it was just great that we could do something to help them and you know that's really the spirit of Goodfellas. It's about helping those who do the work for for the community and those that need help, and we've been doing it for A long time and have our annual meeting once a year Stick in December this year. Of course, we'll be a little different because of the pandemic, but nonetheless, uh, we're having great response. You know, we've had just terrific support from our sponsors. Stepped up early and you know, it really put us on our own away to hitting our goal this year, so we're very excited about that. So, uh, I cannot emphasize this audience S'more that we have people right now who Some people who can't go to work because their kids are at home. So they've had to quit their job, which paid for the runner of the utilities, But their kids are known because some of the schools were closed. Then we have other parents who have to go work in the cafeteria, the hospital so our nurses and doctors can be fed so they could save lives. And these cafeteria workers aren't paid a lot of money. They're living on the edge. And they deserve our help. Yes, exactly. And there are thousands of stories like this in Charlotte, and now we can least help 3000 of those individuals. That's the best exactly right. That's exactly right. So so I love this organization. I love the focus. We? We focus on a families that are working. But as you indicated, paid paycheck the paycheck, So when we come back, people who have gone to this before are used to going to the convention center to take part in this this year in 2020, the Goodfellows are going to come to you, and we're gonna tell you how that happens. Have my invitation I got in the mail a couple days ago has all the directions some.

"And so last week, we had the Democrats virtually convening in Milwaukee. And, of course, our correspondent Jim Roop was covering that for us. And Westwood, one who's correspondent Clayton Nevel has the choice tonight from Charlotte, North Carolina and Clayton. Good evening. Jim. Good to talk to you certainly been a long and exciting day, especially for the delegates here in Charlotte. Yeah, and they're actually our delegates there. We should note that although we're talking about two non conventional conventions But I think it would probably be safe to say right off the bat that Thea Democrats were a bit more virtual and that the Republicans are convening this year. Certainly not like they used to. But but But shall we say, less virtual? Yeah, very much scaled down as far as a typical Republican national convention goes, but today still had a lot of the flash. No, there were 336 delegates there representing all the U. S states and territories and they were actually in person Now. Typically, you're going to get a lot more than 330 plus inside a convention center arena or whatever it may be, but this was inside a ball room at the Charlotte Convention Center today. And there were people from each state that were either dressed maybe like their states culture. For example, the lieutenant governor of Texas had his red, white and blue state of Texas flag colored shirt on there was a woman from Hawaii who had on her les and things like that. That's the kind of stuff that sometimes you see, I saw the really sparkly American flag suit from one guy. So there was that kind of thing happening, of course, and there was excitement inside the room. If you weren't watching, and you were just listening to it, it may have sounded pretty similar. Or do a typical Republican national convention for those who have not actually attended a convention and I've been to a few, and I can recall, for example, in the 1988 in Atlanta. Uh, that was a basketball arena. The old Omni would you say if you've been to a hockey arena basketball arena at the major league level, you're talking about a capacity that can get Right up there, too. Ah, Ah, maybe 18,000 or so people. Ah, And that place was Jan defected. One point they actually the fire. Marshall actually would let anybody else in, which was kind of amusing. I happen to be in the lobby at the time and watch this. Ted Kennedy tried to talk his way back in And there was, of course, no cellphone back in 1988. So we couldn't call the Massachusetts delegation and get an underling to step outside so we could go inside and tell you the fire. Marshall. Do you know who I am? And The fire marshal. Say, yes, Senator candidate and you still can't go back in. So a full political convention can pretty much fill up a a basketball or hockey arena. And they're not doing this actual physical structure. Are they in in in Charlotte, To the extent that they will be convening in Charlotte, Nevel. Clayton knows Well what this Wass was. The Charlotte Convention Center simply in a ballroom. You know, we had talked about it on Friday night how they were starting to put up that metal iron fencing all around the convention center to make it very difficult one for any demonstrators or protesters or just the general public. To get inside, but also to make it easy for the delegates to go from their hotel to the convention center without any exposure to potential Covad 19, So it was very locked down. But that fencing is coming down today because Jim the Charlotte event Is essentially over. Charlotte has played its role in the 2020 Republican National Convention. There's still some delegates that are in town who stuck around to watch the first night. Of the RNC, which is going on now from Washington. But Charlotte is done as Faras. This convention goes, It wasn't a small ball room again, just over 330 people inside. They were certainly shocked, though I say shocked there. It had been leaked out about two days in advance, but some didn't know President Trump and vice President Pence actually made appearances inside that ball room today. Ah, at a wedding, for example, you Ah, You don't expect to see the bride until they play the processional and she comes down the aisle. But you don't expect to see the bride. Ah, ushering people to their seats or passing out programs or things of that nature. You're going to see the bride everywhere. Donald Trump is going to be visible every single night and day as well. Of this convention in some form, Live speaking, pre recorded talking with supporters, this sort of thing. Ah, very, very strong presence is so that's also nontraditional, Clayton. Oh, yeah. You know, the president made remarks before he gone on Marine one and Air Force one today outside of the White House. Then you know all the cameras were on him when he came off of Air Force one in Charlotte. He then came over to the convention center made that speech, which, actually in a lot of people were thinking he's going to swing by. They have a couple of remarks. Maybe 15 20 minutes. He spoke for well over an hour. At the convention today, and then he jumped back into the motorcade and they took the president to Asheville, North Carolina, where he had a speech that obviously was televised is will went back to Washington D. C for the RNC tonight, and he's already made several appearances in that nightly program as well. So yeah, this will certainly be on unconventional convention, not only from the cove in 19 scaled down perspective. But just from the sense that President Trump is doing things his own way. Yeah, I can't recall the old statement made about a previous Republican president Teddy Roosevelt at a wedding. He wants to be the bride at a funeral. He wants to be the corpse. And certainly neither President Teddy Roosevelt nor President Donald Trump has been shy in front of the public adulation. Now there are themes each evening at the Republicans. The Democrats did that as well. But the Republicans have put together themes that will carry them through the week. Clayton Yeah, that's right. Land of promise Land of opportunity. Those of the themes as we move along here throughout the week, and you know, I think each night it's not necessarily going to be indicative of what the theme particular is maybe in the organizer's mind, but it's just really themes that you read about when you hear about it on the radio or read it in the paper or something like that. You know, I mean, maybe the organizer's air headed down that direction. But here watching it today, Yeah, there's several remarks about land of promise and things like that, but really what The overall theme here is get out and vote and re elect President Trump. That's the theme of the RNC. And it will continue right on through the week until the final acceptance that will be arriving, of course with the president from the White House on Thursday, which I understand that they're going to follow that with fireworks is, is that right? Yeah, That's the plan. At least. Then we saw something similar to that last week with Vice President Joe Biden in Camilla Harris is they walked out after making their speeches or after the vice president did Rather, they came out and those fireworks were shot off. We're supposed to have the same type of thing from Washington, D. C. Whether or not that will actually happen that we'll see. Another may have been some pushback as Faras, the organizer's go, but it's still on the last we hear so, Yeah, I think that this week will certainly end with a bang. About it. And one of the things that were also told that every night at 10 O'clock Eastern time, the convention will lead off with a surprise speaker. And do we have anything at all about what's coming up as we speak? Live now in about 45 minutes. You know, we don't I don't know exactly who it's going to be. At this point..

"Joining us now are NPR senior political editor Domenico Montanaro and NPR White House correspondent Franco Ordonez. Hello to both of you. Hey, there. Pipe. Franco's So I want to start with you because this is not the kind of convention that the president wanted. Right like he wanted a big live TV extravaganza. He wanted to be in front of huge life crowds. This convention, of course, is mostly virtual. So you've been out and about with him today he has been craving a chance to talk to crowds. What has his mood been like? Well, his mood has been, you know, it's been, you know, He certainly seemed like he got some energy from this trip. As you point. He's someone who likes to be out there. He likes to be talking with people He likes. He likes the feedback from the crowd, and he got that today, particularly at the Charlotte Convention Center, where he made a surprise trip. But he also got that when he stopped in Ash villas, Wells Mills River. He really, really feeds on that kind of thing on it really embolden him. And how do you think he's going to make the case for why he is a distinct, very different choice from Joe Biden? But one way that he says that he is being distinct. Particularly right now during the convention is he's saying, Look, Biden didn't show up in Wisconsin. And here I am in North Carolina, showing my face being here because I owe it to you and I'm the kind of president who's going to be there for you. And he said it repeatedly. He said it in Charlotte. He said it in Nashville. He set it and Mills River, and like I said, he blasted bite and for not going to Wisconsin and look another one of his senior administration officials came back on the plane on Air Force one when we're coming back to Washington and hammered that point again that said, This is where the president does best interacting with people and you're going to see that day after day this week. And Domenico. Let's go, Teo, you tell us what do you hear it? So I'm going to interrupt you because we're going to go return to the floor for Natalie Harp cancer survivor. In the classic Jimmy Stewart film. It's a wonderful life. George Bailey is given a great gift, a chance to see what the world would be like without him. Tonight, Mr. President, we'd like to give you that same gift. Because without you we'd all be living in Potter's ville sold out to a crooked mister. Or I should say, ah, crooked, Mrs Potter with no hope of escape except death itself. I should know. Because I wouldn't be alive today if it wasn't for you. About five years ago, I was the victim of a notoriously deadly medical air. I survived, but only to be diagnosed with a rare and terminal bone cancer, you know. Democrats love to talk about health care being a human, right? But right toe what? Well, I'll tell you To them. It's a right to marijuana. Opioids and the right to die with dignity. Politically correct way of saying assisted suicide. I was told I was a burden to my family and to my country and that by choosing to die early, I'd actually be saving the lives of others by preserving resource is for them. Rather than wasting them on a lost cause, like myself. And when I failed the chemotherapy is that we're on the market. No one wanted me in their clinical trials. I'd make them look bad. I didn't give me the right to try experimental treatments. Mr President, you did without you. I'd have died waiting for them to be approved. Now with the Corona virus. Everyone knows what that feels like to be waiting for a cure, But we've only been waiting a few months. Just imagine what 2020 would have looked like fighting for your life without Donald Trump. Fighting for it, too. In January, there would have been no China travel ban, Millions would have died, millions more would have been infected for there'd be no record levels of testing no right to try treatments. No fast track for a vaccine nor operation warp speed, ready to deliver it. Without Donald Trump as our patient advocate for the past four years, Well, thie opioid epidemic would've stolen even more lives from even more families. Kidney patients would have no future except dying on Wait, lists further be known initiative to increase donations. I would still be no accountability in the and our brave veterans would still be suffering long wait times with no choice nor access to faster care. Insulin and other drug prices would have continued to rise. While a record number of generic drugs would still be stuck in the pipeline, there'd be no price transparency. We wouldn't have health plans up to 60% cheaper than obamacare, and we'd still be stuck with that infamous individual mandate. God forbid, with the next four years would look like for in Joe Biden's America, China would control our drug production, We'd be one step closer to government run health care. We wouldn't just be unable to keep our doctors. We'd be lucky if we could see any doctor and even then some of us would be denied care. Friend, socialized medicine. You don't beat the odds. You become the odds and I would lose my right to try. Just like Charlie guard that terminally ill British baby whose government run health care system decided it was too expensive and too cruel to keep. Him alive. You see, Mr President, you've done so much more than your promises made and promises kept for numbers. Only tell part of the story. We are the rest of it. "That will be dropped off at the Charlotte convention center which will act as a mandatory hub for a final healthcare screening and then all attendees would have to pass through a clean health checkpoint prior to entering the dedicated area of the spectrum arena and that's before the secret service would take over and then media suites and hospitality areas will be subject to food service guidelines similar to any other restaurant that's what the RNC is saying we are going to do and they're also saying in turn what else needs to happen if anything beyond these kind of like what happened with NASCAR you gonna come back and say I need this or that added or taken away and that's that's what's in the hands of the governor right now now I'm reading some of the blogs on and responses to the Republican Orrin C. guidelines and the critics are saying well what about the mask what about social distancing one about the analysts us what are some of the other controversial issues well I mean the mask is is is all there are mentioning curtailing the numbers per square feet yes social distancing and how many people you're gonna allowed in yeah they they don't charge in that the and basically I think the RNC's might you know it's going to be interested I I think the governor will take advantage of that but if the governor wanted that to begin with why not go ahead state what his guidelines are there stating their guidelines for everything else it's just amazing right now the decision making power of one individual at the state level in all states in the third month of a state of emergency and you know states of emergencies advice stated because I've done several as governor and as mayor usually are anticipated only lasted a week or two where one person has sold third authority to make these decisions outside the city council or the state legislature the council state right now that's the way the governor wants it to continue and so does our health director remember though the county commissions they liked it officials are kind of stepping off on the side and all these decisions remember I like I said last hour this same thing happened with NASCAR they submitted that what they were going to do and the governor quickly responded and said here's what needs to happen there and now you and I are talking about four days of NASCAR racing that just happened it's done it's finished as is a lot bigger this Asian and that but my point is look how quick the decision came.
