"Much. So remember earlier this week we talked about this was with Bloomberg's max chaffin about how Mark Zuckerberg is all in on the metaverse, right? Focusing on that rather than Facebook, the company he created and is still really the big business behind meta, despite the name change. So zuck is all in on the metaverse and also two is our next guest. Yeah, absolutely. You know, I'm not really sure what the metaverse is, but I think I'll know it when I see it. I'm not sure. But Anne Han, she knows it, and is the chairman and chief executive officer of Super League gaming, joined us on Zoom from Los Angeles. So and let's start out, particularly for the popes that are folks that are out there in their cars driving around, let's just start out really simple. To you, what is the metaverse? Yeah. It's a great question. And if you ask ten different people, you're going to get ten different answers. The way that I simply try to talk to both investors and some of our larger brand partners about is the first kind of part of the metaverse is metaverse games or what we call open world platform games. And in those games, instead of you going in and just playing a game that served up to you, you're actually given tools to create your own games and experiences. And there's no limit to what that gamified experience can be. It can be concerts, fashion shows. It can be all kinds of things. Metaverse game or open world platforms have been around for over a decade. It's platforms like Minecraft and Roblox, and now increasingly Fortnite. You don't need a VR headset And you can participate in those experiences as a creator or as a viewer or player. Right now today, hundreds of millions of kids are already there and super leagues build a pretty big footprint there. We reach 70 million unique under 18 gamers a month. And those worlds alone. So the first thing I say is big meta, maybe 5 years away, but metaverse games don't be afraid of them. They're around. That's where kids play. They prefer those types of game modes where they can be the creator as well. To traditional video games. Now that said, I do think that bigger meta is going to continue to happen faster than we think. There are companies building out the engines so that you don't just have to use Roblox and Minecraft to create these experiences, big brands, iconic IP will be able to create their own worlds and interact with their fans and gamify things and monetization around those fans. And own that full user and that monetization stream. And that's not far away. That's happening in a really now and over the next one to two years. So I think it's going to be gradual. And it personally for me, I don't know if I'll ever be the person wearing a VR headset for ten hours a day, right? That big meta vision. But what I can give comfort around is it does exist right now in these game platforms. So is it all when we think about the metaverse or big, bigger meta? Is it just with a gaming component? Is everything with a gaming component or is it the way you see it? I know you're an eSports community and content platform. So that's your world, but is it something even more wider than that? Yeah, no, thank you for that question because we do get call these sports a lot and yet we are so much bigger than that now. When we talk about those 70 million monthly players, we're talking to all kinds of people who are seeking community inside these game based platforms. But Super League isn't really just a gaming company. We gamify experiences. And so to your question, it's much bigger than that. We help Samsung earlier this year, bring Charlie XCX into the metaverse for a concert. We ran the red carpet for the MTV VMA awards inside a digital world where your digital avatar could participate in that experience, even if you don't live anywhere near New York. Did it have legs? That's all we want to know. No. Yeah. And I went in and I kept knocking the paparazzi over by accident. So if you're bad at it, it doesn't really by accident. No, no, just kidding. Well, let me tell you. And this is the real time example right now. We've had the pleasure of helping Mattel take their steps into these metaverse games. And right now, you can go into one of our game world's called live topia. And you can hang out in Barbie's dream house. We've created a three story digital version of Barbie's dream house. You can swim in the pool, lay on the chaise lounge, go hang out in Barbie's closet and try on clothes. Those are to all of us again traditional video games. That's about community. It's a digital cul de sac. It's people finding people they want to socialize with. And so Super League has come a long way because we now have the kind of reach where we can speak to the Barbie girl, the hot wheels boy, that older demo that may be a Samsung or MTV wants to reach. Because here's the reality, everybody is a gamer these days. And it's not just hardcore gaming. We tended to think about it 5, ten years ago. All right, just real quickly, what's the business model here? Do I sell advertising against this audience or charge them, subscriptions, business model? Yeah, the primary business model is that we work with brands and partners to take them into metaverse worlds that we already operate ourselves or are part of our extended network. We have several hundred a world. So when a brand like Mattel comes to us, we can say, look, here are the types of game worlds that we really think matches your target audience. Here's the experience that we think is right. And then we have some pretty special proprietary ad technology media tech and analytics. And what that means is we may have built Barbie's dream house in one world, but we have 3D barbies, characters, walking around, digital avatars, and other worlds directing traffic to it. I think in the first two weeks of Barbie, we had over 32 million visitors to her dream house. So we're talking about really outstanding numbers as far as engagement, but also deep engagement. Hanging out 25, 30 minutes at a time. And come back soon, because I'd love to get deeper into the monetization of those millions, whether it's Barbie's dream, Barbie dreamhouse, or others, I'd love to talk more with you and hand. She's chairman CEO, a Super League gaming stock though, by the way, down about 71% so far this year, it's a small cap micro

"Anyway, I really listen to it and I was like, man, I have a much better understanding of this now. This is, this is not what it was branded as on. That's funny. I loved it. So let me ask you this. Is hyper pop pop music for kids with ADHD? Oh, that's a good way of phrasing it because actually I feel like it does kind of work with my ADHD. It's fairly scratches that itch, but it's not necessarily for kids. I mean, well, let's keep in mind my age compared to you. I refer to a wide range of ages as kids. Oh yeah, than it is for kids. So someone could be in their late 20s and I might think they're a kid. Right, I think when I started first hearing about hyper pop, it was like with 100 gecs on TikTok with their song money machine. I don't even know what you just said. But yeah, it got really popular as a genre. People started using it to describe all sorts of things. It's very goofy, but it's basically like pop, but it's sort of like ironically taking those pop standards to the edge, like the next level. The next level. Very true. Yeah, like very prominent auto tune. But it's higher and like crunchy sounds, like some distortion, some notable examples are probably like Charlie XCX, 100 gex. Who else? Scott, I don't really know much about hyperpop, honestly, but yeah. For a deep comfort. I mean, I'm fine with it. It's not something I'd want to do like a deep dive on. Yeah. Well, cool. Yeah, funded rediscover that and see that it was something that actually related to our podcast episode and related to music that I listened to nowadays, and I was like, wait, magdalena bay put out music before mercurial world. And I was like, wow, y'all have another album? I thought that this was like a great debut album or something, and it is, I don't know. Let me go back real quick. I don't know, I need to stop feeling bad because my feelings on the album were my feelings on the album. Oh yeah, that's right. I don't know if it was. So I saw that they were male female duo kind of producing what you described as dance pop. And I think I went into it with this expectation of, you know, like I said last week, I had heard reference to Sophie Tucker as a comparison. And their stuff is a lot more like definitely bassy club dance..

Bloomberg quick take powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts in more than 120 countries I'm susannah Palmer This is Bloomberg This is Bloomberg Wall Street week with David Weston from Bloomberg radio Meme stocks One of the things we discovered or invented in 2021 as the Reddit crowd used Robinhood to make GameStop a hit To be met with surprise and a fair amount of skepticism from people like rod Osman of G man I don't think you can recreate a company that had been in the analog era for its existence into a pure digital player or digital first player overnight And if meme stocks weren't enough we had the explosion in cryptocurrencies including ETFs of crypto companies which the CEO of finance says could catapult crypto into the mainstream They can typically reach customers that we were not able to reach But the focus on meme stocks and crypto is only a part of a much larger story The story of the growth of retail investors in the market overall according to Katherine Keating of BNY Mellon The structure of the markets has changed during our lifetimes Today the retail segment of the market the assets that are governed by individuals is larger than the institutional institutional segment and it's growing faster And the driving force behind this historic surge it's the demos What Bernard George of online broker tornado calls a generational wealth transfer We're at the chest the beginning stages of a massive secular shift in the space There's a $60 trillion plus generation of wealth transfer taking place right now And when it comes to ETFs and retail investing there really is only one leader in the field He is Salim ramji He's head of I shares an index investing for BlackRock They oversee $6 trillion in assets 3 trillion of which is in ETFs Welcome to Wall Street We've created Thanks for having me here David It's a great privilege 2021 record year for ETFs Yeah Explain is how that record got set and why Yeah it's actually an amazing story So ETFs are now 32 years old since the first ETF was launched And if you go back to around the time that BlackRock bought BGI there was just about a $1 trillion in ETF assets in total Now there's this much has happened in the course of a given year And so when you go back to the reasons why I think it's got a lot to do with convenience It's just an easier way for many people to invest And it's got a lot to do with choice I mean we now have something like 1200 different ETFs around the world And so it provides investors lots of different ways to access the investments they want not just here in the U.S. but across Europe across the world because of the exchange traded way in which it works So some of us think of it like retail investors and institutional investors Yeah Do they invest differently Do you see a different pattern when it's the retail investors investing in ETFs as opposed to the institutions Yeah and their historically have been too big clients And so across our ETF business we have about 30 million investors within I shares and then there's about another 90 million in our index capabilities outside of it And our origins were institutions different institutions wanting access to international markets wanting access to the bond market The big driver of our growth has also been wealth advisers looking to build portfolios and having ETFs in components And I think the big new news has been retail investors So self directed investors really coming into the marketplace insignificant size especially over the past year and a half during the pandemic And I think that's been a new source of growth for us particularly with millennial investors coming into the market in a way that they hadn't in years past That was going to a question actually how much of this is demographic How much of it is actually a generational Well some of it like the existing investors that we have today And one big part of the stories to what has driven the inflows has been just more and more existing investors putting more of their money to work Because they liked what they saw In some of the early exposures and they just keep adding as they save more But I think the new force and why we're pretty optimistic that the 120 million investors that we have will be 200 million over the course of the next 5 years is this millennial investor coming in And just to give you one number even if we just look over the past since 2020 30 million more Americans have opened up investment accounts just in the past year or two And that's more than have opened up investments account investment accounts in the prior decade And the average of those investors is a millennial We've learned two years old They're coming into the market for the first time They're looking for something convenient They're looking for a good deal And many of them are turning more and more ETFs And how much do they typically start on investing So it completely ranges So if I give you an example from outside the United States just to give you a sense of it we have German investors investing in ETF savings plans and they're putting about a €150 a month And so we're seeing investors start out with small amounts In many cases even smaller than that a third of the investors in the United States have less than $500 to start But they're saving a little bit every single month And while that won't drive gigantic flows this year next year if you take a 5 year horizon or a ten year horizon they could be as significant as important as institutions are as wealth advisers are as any other demographic segment is for us It's a fascinating story and thank you.

"How are you? I'm anxious to hear about this music festival. A virtual one, of course, but a pretty good one this weekend, right? Right. Lot of big names. This is, um This is being organized, in part to support the Chicago Independent Venue League, which is a group of about 40 different venues spread out all over Chicago. They form together to just try to get through the pandemic. There is estimate that about 90% of Chicago, small venues would go out of business. A to the rate. They were going to get a little bit of a bailout from the government in this last round of pandemic of funding, But you know they're still there still struggling. They're still limping through trying to get to the day when we can at least start getting together and at least smaller groups inside like that. So there's the festival begins today at 2 P.m.. It said it today tomorrow. And Sunday and it's some of the big names are gonna be the smashing pumpkins. They are scheduled for Sunday night. Fall out boy is playing today. Taylor Bennett's on the list. Um Charlie Xcx is good is playing. It's It's just a group of 25 different bands. They're all pitching in, and some of the proceeds are going to go to this Chicago independent venue league just to keep these thieves places to keep the lights on until we can all go back there. Yes, And if anybody wants more information, you've got it all at block Club Chicago dot or good Block club Chicago dot or G'kar. Let's talk about the Northside Alderman who rejected a zoning change for a proposed development. What's the latest on this? Right. Exactly. Let's see if I could make a zoning change story. Interesting. This good luck. Good luck, right. Well, normally when we talk, we talk about things that are coming into neighborhoods that are needed. But this one was about, um, grocery store that wants to open a very prominent North Center intersection right at Lincoln, Damon and Irving and they have a huge plan. They want to build a grocery store there, But the problem is they won't say what grocery store did. This is really just picked off the alderman and neighbors who have all weighed in the state. You asked us for your Our opinion, our feedback on your proposal, but we don't even know who's going there. And so yesterday, the alderman Alderman mad Martin, hey told the developer you're out. I'm not giving you the zoning change you need. The developer has repeatedly refused to say who it is. They say we've got a non non disclosure agreement. We can't say it. We will somewhere down the road. But it was interesting. You know, A lot of Alderman will will fight to get groceries into their neighborhoods. But Martin said, you know, forget That this lack of transparency is that is not what I'm all about in North Center, so we'll see. You know these things kind of go back and forth sometimes. And maybe if they come back, you know, with more details that could be revived. But what I'm interested in is like what? What girl? Sure do these people not want, you know, that was the unspoken thing is like what a trader Joe's float, but a You know, Mariano is no or I'm not sure what They don't want but they do want is some information about what this huge building is going to go up in one of the you know the most prominent intersections and in the North Center neighborhood. You know, I think I've actually lost weight during the pandemic, and everybody's talking about people gaining weight. But I'll tell you why I've lost weight because no free samples, Trader Joe's or R Costco and you know, I used to stock up on that. Nice to pig out. No, I I just Yeah. When I go, I am. I zipped through there. I wouldn't even I didn't even notice her notes. Examples. I just try not to make eye contact. I grabbed what I need and I'm out E mean, I pay. But of course on Chicago's Von Trapp family has a story in Ravenswood. What's this all about? Yeah. I love the calling on the bunch. Those struggles spot Trapp family. This is the loose arrows, um, that they have Ah, modern mariachi band names Cielito Lindo. And you know they're a band that you may have seen over the years because they play a Bulls games They play at festivals. They've been on TV, performing a bunch of different places that zoo zee and one Sarah and their seven kids and they're quite you know, fascinating band, but We wrote about them about a month ago because they were really had been struggling. Obviously, just like the music venues, the band's themselves can't get work as much. You know they can do it online, but they can't do their festivals. They can't do all the Showing up at venues and kids in years and all the different places that they made money. So some of their neighbors, you know, spread the word that they were six months behind in rent. There are facing addiction from their Ravenswood home and started to go fund me when we first reported that it was a couple $1000, and they're hoping to get to 10,000. We checked in with them yesterday and the go fund me it's now up to $65,000. In the family is just blown away by the support. People have offered places for them to live cars, but lots of just 25 $50 donations. I was noticing there's 793 different Chicago in the neighbors have stepped up toe know the really helped this family who they know they bring so much joy to people when they play and they can't do it now. Well, they are doing it. Virtually they're going to use some of that money to upgrade their virtual studio so they can do performances. There's details on how to book them at Block Club Chicago dot or but just, you know, we always like to highlight the stories of Chicago and helping Chicago ends and boy they really came out for a loose Cheryl family. Cielito Lindo. If you're interested in and checking him out, that's great. Jamie's to me with are extremely local news. Have a good weekend. Thank you. Famous. OK, Thanks, Bob Coming up. Our little Valentine's Day music spectacular. We have the stories behind some of the most popular top 40 love songs and we'll play. Little snippets of those for you.
