"All those guys you mentioned that mentioned united nemeth and guys who ended up places that at the end of their careers like he didn't want to see that right. Warren moon was still playing well cunningham big seasons in minnesota as well as philadelphia. All those guys had really good careers. I just to what guy left team that he was a hall of famer on and still played at a high level of all time. Who do you think of that position. I think joe montana's kansas city right the negative the afc championship game that year. They did they did lose to buffalo right so said thinking the oilers thinking guy suit. Now i'll tell you what you mentioned. Kurt warner and we'll get back and finish up with baseball here. You mentioned kurt warner and that that video that you were talking about and Whose last team was. Do you remember when he was with the giants and he had the injury. We all thought. The guy can't play anymore. You remember he was little he couldn't play. You lost yes. He's watching him play. And i was like this because he was so frigging good with the rams and you looked at him as dude got. He can't play a it got to the point when i was watching what was uncomfortable watching him play. And then all of a sudden he gets to arizona. And what's it gonna be like and bingo there back in a super bowl right. Yeah guy was phenomenal. so yeah those guys warned. Put up good numbers in kansas city. And you know. He did with us in minnesota. After he left the oilers he had great where he was a hall of famer. One place in still went on and played really good elsewhere and that doesn't happen often but they were some brady's doing that now obviously as a super bowl winner in another city so i love Good i love baseball and basketball trivia more than football. But i love when you bring that up and it's like oh that's right forgot. The that guy played there great stuff. I liked that good game. "But i like houston Think it'd be easy game for the team to play baylor Because they're gonna play a certain weight and you know bilas very good as well. So that's game should be good but i do like houston But the thing that you can't get town his co. sanson He's a veteran coach. He's a very good coach He's got the best out of his guys. And i don't see that happening. I don't see that changing Against baylor one thing. I do like about houston. Is you know on offense. They they share it They shoot it and then they chase it. So you're going to have to be prepared and ready for battle each and every time the ball goes out. And that's just the way they beat inked a lot of times they might shoot it all then. They're not shoot it all the time going to tape it and get multiple opportunities and they find their guys who can stroke it You know an outside after those opportunities. I'm so i. I like. Houston i mean. I know people talking about baylor But i do like houston And and for them to know to be tough. But i'd like the way they played a game. Yeah you can sustain that great defense and rebounding the offensive glass charlie. Yeah i met so much Admiration for you when you were playing in college in the nba. But just the way you handled yourself as gentleman is a person but also just the decisions you went through in the example. You've been throughout. So if i had a young man and i wanted to send him to you or of a young woman either way but it's a high school athlete. A coach tells them a focus on one sport. What advice would you give a person who excelled two sports or three sports in high school. What advice would you give them. If a coach told them that in high school i would tell them that I actually tried to get by god. I coached high school basketball down here. Florida state university school. And i tried to get my guys to Clear complimentary sport because the more you play one sport at some point you gotta get bored And you may lose focus. Yes you can get much better at you. Focus on sport However i think there needs to be a period where you know you need to take a break and grandparents you know. Most times you go to school. We go to academic school From august to mate and then we have summer. And there's a reason why you do that Because you need a break. And so. I don't see it in different for Being a student athlete and there are some that needs to focus on one sport I just know that needs to be early Early on in in a student out needs career But i think at some point there may be a kid who need who need to focus because you may be behind you know whether it's atlantic fli or he's trying to make the team whatever it may be And he needs to prepare himself for that but then again i'm just a big believer that When you make life decisions choices you have to live the consequences and so if you put all your eggs in one basket as far as trying to make a team and you don't make that team then you don't have any other options outside of you know not doing anything. And so. I just think i it. Just it's always good to have Be around it And prepare yourself for multiple sports but some people choose to make that decision and have to live with whatever. Our coaches basketball in florida. Heisman trophy winner is a first round draft. Pick one of the great people on the planet. he's the host of the believe in the acc. On the believe. podcast network. "A no brainer to did the alcindor in my mind. I'll send our ucla bruins that. John coach yeah. Yeah that makes sense. Is that the team that won the final four one is here houston at the astrodome. Reckon with outstanding team relief. So okay i believe show probably be one of those things. It's out same day. They went. He was a three time college basketball player of the year three times. I mean john wooden sue. Cla bruins at that. Time and bill walton's ucla. Bruins were good to we can go through. We could talk about grant hill's do team there are some kentucky teams. That have been fantastic. I mean you can go through the course of time and hell you. unlv They the over over. The patrick ewing's georgetown were really good basketball. Team north carolina or caroline the yet jordan on the same team with the dean smith one of the best of all. There's a bunch of them but for my money. Alcindor is the best college and pro player combined of all time. The most unstoppable college player ever and the best college coach of all time on the same team i'm taking and there was there was a roster that surrounded. Ucla's team without cinder. Who's now obviously cream abdul jabbar. That's the best pauley pavilion. That's the best college basketball team and era in my opinion of all time. Bill russell's team for bad but the ucla bruins without center where the best john wooden in my opinion. All right sticking to college basketball. We heard earlier this week. That shock a smart is at texas and headed to marquette. So this is a two parter. Who would you like to see. Replace him and how much pressure is on texas to get this right a lot. The question is where do you go. We've seen any candidates. Names mentioned royal was on the brian interview right but we any big name candidates. They're going to leave there. I mean everybody links. Of course. Chris beard from texas tech. But i mean he's the he's been the top taller makes six million dollars a year in lubbock and he has a massive buyout tech better. It's a better program better. I just is when it comes to yet. It's still a lure. Longhorns austin money That just the alumna every everything i mean. I get why they'd wanna go. I don't know. I like. I said i'm trying to think who formerly if you wanted to keep it in house. I don't know who a former texas players. It's coaching out there. Over the course of time like with mike woodson at indiana. I don't think you're going to go out and offer one of these other guys. I mean bob knight ain't coming out of retirement okay I personally don't know who the best candidate to as far as it around. They're going to try and lane beard. Of course i don't think he's the logical one Big name guy. You're gonna make the calls to the to the guys that you know would be like i'll tell you what although he i think he decided new counter. You know who. I would call in my mind and i know you guys are going to look at me like i'm nuts. I call rick pitino senior. God alone i say what you want. He did say that someone. I remember who it was but some big school did call him. He said he's happy. Or you know right right. But i would call rick pitino because i understand. But if he's back in basketball that means somebody believes he's rehabbed himself right or whatever it is that he needed to do. Rick pitino can recruit players. Love him the alumni. He's flashy he looks the part and he knows how to coach also have sex on the bathroom floor. I'm not saying that's a good thing. You know what i'm saying. Far coaching wanted a big name. That smart like right now. You ain't getting roy williams. You're not getting nor five right just bill self. I'm just throwing names of. Yeah you're not available in that guy right. i did not get your cronin at ucla. you're not getting mark. Few rick pitino is at a smaller school. There is another main. The i think he likes the big flash. He's obviously coach big time teams and he's younger than i thought he was. He's sixty eight seventy five. Who else went through trouble and found himself to the university of texas after he hit rock. Bottom sark yes. Oh rehab story for patino. He said i don't know but somebody felt there's enough. My point is something that felt. There was enough to hire him right. So if you're just ripped here's good basketball coach all the other stuff we weren't privy to other than what we hear. I wasn't there not good. I'm just saying if you're university of texas and you wanted a splash for good or bad reasons. Rick pitino knows that a recruit and rick pitino could go get the guy in kentucky mr basketball oriented chicago or in california and get him to play texas. He he could. If you're just talking about creek. Will they turn it around. I don't know when we keep saying. I haven't seen it. Time will tell. I did have a dark horse candidate. Okay brad stevens i would. I think. Brad stevens is great for the college game. And maybe that's a that's a good point. He's a he's buttoned up. He's been great the college level for a minute. Obviously he's been good with the celtics. He knows how to coach You're going to. You're going to get a guy who knows the xs and os a basketball and is always doing. The right thing appears. I think that's a. That's a logical. Would you leave the celtics for ut. I dunno depends on if he likes to recruit likes the college game more than the nba. Game don't know but that's that's another name and he probably would be because every year we keep coming up. We think the brad stevens might come back to college. We hear it all the time. A college job comes up available but those are a couple of names as far as turning it around how many times we said it in football. We're hoping doesn't now and they get players. Texas is a hotbed of basketball and people don't realize that are not watching the same high school basketball. The we have here. We'll come back and continue to discuss on tyler's ten but It may be the landscape. Ripped you may be too soon. Mc's you mentioned but somebody out there if they've hired a means that somebody.

"Would you choose today It would definitely be tough More tough choice due to the fact that they are giving us guys my size An opportunity to be first round picks You know when i was coming out that was on the issue you had to be a certain size playing a certain type system In order for you to be a first round pick and but in today's you know things have changed Guys coming out from you. Know the spray type systems are first picks first round picks Guys my size. Six foot six one or get an opportunity to be I picks first round picks. And i think management change They have different spouse and their their car college coaches and They see style they can win and they're putting offenses around that that guy and so i think the the time to change and so i wouldn't say you know things will be different because i enjoy my experience But it the nba definitely is different in this day and age as well So it definitely be a tough decision. Charlie ward heisman trophy winner joins us here. First round draft. Pick on the sean sows. Brace show sports talk seven ninety charlie. I would imagine you're watching college basketball closely being a sports fan that you are talking about the houston cougars and my kelvin sampson legitimate. I mean it's a tough road against baylor may be gonzaga. You give them a legitimate chance to be carrying the trophy when it's all done on monday night Crazy part about it is. I mean i like houston I don't know if they're win But i liked them just the way. They play A manager oh. I love it game. he's tall long arms but the thing he's very cerebral he understands the game. Plays the game right way They they play defense And they have guys that can shoot the ball as well Sasser grimes a very good outside shooters and they played the same way all year. That's want them to play the same. All your does in the final four for the most part..

"Now the head coach of the Fsu High School. Basketball Team Charlie Ward. Charlie how are you how are you. I'm doing great. I'm doing great. Thank you for spending some time on this Thanksgiving Week. I mentioned in the intro. Because you you it's it's required. We have to introduce you every time as eisman trophy winner as well as NBA alum. Nothing like that has ever forbid achieved. I think since or anybody's come close and I wonder in this era of specialization. Could we ever possibly see somebody like you. Who by the way? Ah You were also I was looking up by your drafted by major league. Baseball twice as is the era of the Multi Sport High School and College Star over over. Probably I mean you may have one outlier when it comes to a you know a guy plan to sports and You'll have an opportunity to possibly play those sports professionally but probably more than likely none In the Ram of playing basketball and football. which you know it's hard to do and you know I was blessed to be able to have an opportunity to do both in college college and then give it up to you know play professionally in? Most sports is one point in time but the grateful dead in New York Knicks Game Tentative Plan Mba. I mean it was probably difficult even even in your time I would imagine the balance and the dedication required tired is difficult in in in any era. But you've been coaching youth sports. You spent I think it was nine years coaching high school football. And now you're back to coaching high. Go basketball so you see kids. These days. In the way that the training or the Being specialized in one sport. Does it strike you that that. That is the case now out there. They're single sport athletes No I mean it happened during my time high school and So you know did it We just have more not doing no multiple sports which is case 'cause they're focusing on their individual schedule support and you know. I'm a big believer in you. Know guys doing what's best for their situation where they are Mainly because goes of you know. Sometimes you're behind in a sport and you WanNa be Excel in And you need more time to do that. I I think you know that's okay But just know that you're you're gonNA enjoy that one sport but if you have any kind of talent Be Able to cross over and play multiple sports than I love to sports. So does you can give you Steffan on arrest or break from your major sport and it should be like Seventy thirty you know split When it it comes to your time and whatever your major sport maybe but you know I've had even my niece here lately? Who was all about you know basketball for a minute and And then she ended up going to try Our junior year. She's a senior now and and now she got a scholarship to run track at And so you know you never know. And that's the the one thing I always talk to kids about is you know. Give you options Because you never know with sport may give an opportunity to you'll you'll get your education paid for But you definitely know that if you're only playing one sport did you know that's GonNa make it happen but if nothing else else you gotTa make sure you're doing everything possible to have their the greatest as well to be able to go to college and if you WANNA walk on no have that opportunity it as well so you're back to coaching basketball. After Several Years Coaching football why the change now. What drew you back to basketball? It's just interesting that your your coaching career tracks. You're you're playing career where it's like. You always got a little bit of a hand in in both the. It's kind of hard to get either one out your system I guess but why back to basketball now Well For Nine Years College football and I wasn't very good. I like one win season. I'm tomorrow's nine years But I took over programs that needed improvement in. You know we did improve of course in my tenure but are we just wouldn't successful And when it came to win also says and you know when it was time for me to move on from from from my school that I was currently coaching at no last night Two years ago they are really know what I was going to do. As far as sports so is concerned coaching wise and God opened up two doors in basketball. And I really wasn't looking for basketball job and And one of them just happen to be here in Tallahassee which is closer to where we were looking to move And you know it was the smart. Those deals where I had been out of basketball for nine years but before the my football coaching job I I was out of football for thirteen years. You know eleven years playing two years of coaching basketball and so I had a long lost. It's a lot of football understanding and knowledge. And just the whole wherewithal. I knew what I learned from a coaching perspective on how to WHO Run a program and also connections and those types of things that helped me along but you know to learn and understand and once I got intuit I stuck with football as the reason why I stuck with it because I needed to get better and a lot of areas so but I'm GonNa came to coast basketball. I jumped at it and I was blessed to be able to. Have you know a group That bar in you know we had had some challenges just like any new but they bought in to what we were selling very young group on a group and and we were able to have some success but also had a great staff the a through transition and so now basketball is starting to Colorado wral limit more And when it comes to this strategic plan because I was in it for you know thirteen years and I'm never lost that part so but I also have good staff and there have been been very helpful this year. We have expectations. We made it to the regional finals last. She wants to have before the final four and this year. We're looking to at least make the Final Four giving surfing opportunities interstate championship. We've always here about just the effect of the the NBA game on youth basketball and just kind of the the culture of the game the way it evolves and obviously the game the NBA game today is dramatically different in a Lotta ways than than the game. You played in the nineties and early two thousands. Are you seeing that influence on the youth game yourself. Is everybody coming out wanting to shoot from midcourt like Steph curry and trae young. Where's where's the influence or what? What tendencies using out there that that strike you not that much But as far as those guys shooting I know my team. We don't allow it. You know because we don't we don't practice those shots. Let's in and I'll tell the guys those guys have been in the gym for hours. And so that's what you WANNA do. You have to show me that you're putting in the time that they put in to get to that point and so it's not gonna be a copycat deal and then sea a copycat work ethic which I know that ours. These guys put in shooting a basketball in those types of things and so you know I guess the biggest influences just won one game saying You know a Lotta guys want to you. Know go one on one and those things and they have the ability to do that. However you know when you start playing against very are good basketball teams Long game is not going to be the most effective unless there's player movement and so A lot of people are adopting. You know the the pick and roll spreading name the floor from office standpoint You Santa in a lot of that And in hospital for the most part have players and then defensively you know everyone switching. We're something that the NBA starting to do more in colleges welded and a lot of switching Where they have same size is type players and even with you know GARS smaller guards? They're doing it. Um and then they're doing what they call ex out so You know a lot of those transit coming down to the Today high school ranks and but just trying to get guys understand that player Movement Ball Movement from an office standpoint deathly. You know it's the best way to get everyone involved and then defensively being in help help position and then helping recover. Those are the things that I was founded on with that rally in Van. Gundy in Pop All those guys you know had a great a great great affect on on my coaching style comes to basketball. And but it's of course Tony. Plus years later you know those same foundational things are still there. There is just a little different with the kids and the mentality. But you know we're pitching effort. You know that's never gonNA change replacing execution. Never going to change preaching communication and all that stuff is never gonNA change you you came in under Pat Riley. You played briefly for Don Nelson briefly because time with the Knicks was was a bit brief. Obviously Jeff Van Gundy and then for a brief time at the end of your toward the end of your career a pop when you're out on the court with your guys are any of those voices coming through you are are you. Are you hearing yourself saying the things that any of those guys drilled you on in the NBA years ago. But mainly because van. Gundy 'cause I was with him the longest and so a lot oughta things drills that we do actually have to have a drill call bank ending no shot no shot offense We used to do it five. Oh No you know have court run it through our offensive principles and say and those types of things so You you know he was the one that I was with the longest now in both of my you know with New York and then in Houston that coach down to him so a lot. The coaching you know comes from the stuff that I learned from him And so you know what I also reference pop and some of his defensive principles and things that he's he told as well There About stay unfunded guide beat him to a spot and showing your hands and not no contestant to not file and then those types of things and you know we're good player moment ball movement you know in the sense this guy not being stagnant so you know I learned a lot from from those this guys and I hear myself a lot but I also hear my dad was a coach. Come is high school coach so a lot of times. I hear and say a lot of things that he he shared as well. Yeah more like him and anything goes do you have his is it a voicing is actually the actual expressions that you use probably voice..

"He was Charlie ward first work for about fifteen to twenty minutes there's absolutely nothing we could do the fire extinguisher after few squirts on the calling whatsoever in the acts just bounced off the fuselage Charlie called me aside those helicopters flying at night and he couldn't stay here go he gave me the choice of staying with Jesse going with him it would have been suicide to Spain just then we bring in our consciousness I wasn't sure what he was conscious and we was temperature was at least around zero and what isn't always thirty five degrees below zero at night and five I made the decision to go with Charlie to just going back to the ship the bridge right away and he had ready to ship Sweitzer the aircraft he's going to take that Kerry is close to our shores it possibly could send the flight surgeon in the helicopter to the site of the wreckage could just use Barney on sure symbolic gesture much much to do so for those of course on the other line escort and support for the phone and street is Jesse use is that.

"So you're from Florida a group in Tampa. Okay. So you grew up and the what the some trying to figure it out. So you're you see you're in college in ninety seven. I was there for the Charlie ward work done Br Derrick Brooks heyday funny, when I was in college there was there was a little these single tapes by the counter when you check out of the gas stations, and there was a tape that said Brooks and Dunn, and I thought oh, cool Derrick Brooks and worked out a hip hop. I grad I'm not even grab by it. It's like a dollar there were dollar put in my tape deck, and it's country. Now openminded goes. Okay. All right. I love I love the way to play. You still thought it was Brooks and Dunn at that point. And I'm like, they're not that bad. They're not that bad. That is amazing. Like, of course, you know, like Charley pride there are black. Is it can sing country like now. And I'm like, yeah. Well is amazing. I was playing for people doing to check out Brooks and work done album. And they're like this is good. Yeah. But I was there during the Charlie ward Derrick Brooks days worked on I graduated and sat next to work done and he was going to Tampa. And I grew up in Tampa. We were sitting next to each other. You graduated sitting next to work done. You have an I'll tell you why. Because I was written up in rolling. Stone magazine is the number one party animal, and I think they wanted they said work done and the place went nuts. And then they slid my name and right bottom ember crusher, and so Pete known even heard my name. They're still cheering for work done told him. I was like I was like him and you go to a lot of friends in Tampa. If you want to hook you up with some friends in Tampa. And he just looked at me. He was like, no. Done the nicest guy nicest guy in the world. Try to corrupt work done. Fishing. Are you try to do that sweet work done in Tampa during the bucks when the bucks were absolutely horrible? Right. Terrible ruutel. But my hero growing up. My hero is Doug Williams low. I mean, that's the man I had a rabbit. I name the rabbit. Doug williams. Are you serious? I was obsessed with Doug Williams. My dad would say things, you know, when your dad says something just lays on us like look at the touch this man has he can just all feather into the end zone. And I'd be like one day. That'll be like me. But yeah. So did you try did you ever try to play football? I played football hurt my neck and then just play baseball and play baseball. And then went to Florida state and to serious program, though, was went went to walk on I practice coach Martin came up to me. And he's like a lot of catchers. But we always can use the bullpen catcher. Yeah. And I was in the uniform I walked out left field fence walked right past all the pitchers. I am not catching bullpen walk back to Sally dorm, chilly, William pulpy. So we're getting high. I walked into my room universal on. Thing called time travel where we get high in pitch black and I got high listen to Pink Floyd. And I was like I think I'm gonna party professionally done with baseball. Yup. And that's the sport. And the rest is now the machine exists here. Now, you're. I would've never met you as an athlete what a truly inspirational story, honest with you. Yeah. You know, you never know when you're going to turn that corner and make a decision in your life. So let's get to this Manningly story. What happened with you? Don mattingly. That's okay. So just understand this. As you tell the story. And I know I'm telling this to man who just told that story about being nicknamed the machine because that's the way that you got in tight with the Russian mafia and are planning on your next tour to finish in Moscow and tell that story in Moscow. Yeah, I fully understand. I'm telling that guy. That Don Mattingly is my favorite baseball player of all time. Okay. Don mattingly. Okay. Is from Tampa. Okay. He's from he's from Indiana. Nobody he would him. Fred McGriff, take batting practice. Well, the Anki trae spring training conflicts limits. Okay, -pedia so. Fred McGriff would take BP at our high school. Okay. Okay..

"And I think he overwhelms a lot of people. I think that they're just not prepared for what he has and they kind of freak out. And then all of a sudden they have their back and then now he's hitting them in, you know what I mean? Allendc with good wrestler, and he's a good. He was kind of calm in those situations. And I think that's what he ended up making it so long. You know, a lot of the guys he's face are not the best author bag, or, you know, they panic. I feel like if you see when he fought Michael Johnson, Michael Johnson never been on his back. He didn't know what to do from there. He was getting smothered who else? It's more bows and I really guard guy or any anything like that. So I think that counters surprise a lot of people, you know, he's a very good you dizzy. Gosh, just hear me like this is the kind of fight that I just wanna talk about forever be. I'm excited for it to. I'm, you know, I'm part of. Even. I mean, I'm may fan growing over. This is exciting. It's amazing to be part of amaze. Cool. You know, it's it's gonna grow or sport Connors, change of sports on much is just another step in what he's done for our spores. No one can ever argue that, you know he's Bader sport way bigger than it was so funny it's just going to do is or it's just going to bring this even bigger. So it just helps everybody else. What else about it? It's the classic of a may fight Drager grappler. Right. It's just it's like, it's like what the sport was founded on, who can you know who can exert his will, who could keep the fight other standing or bring to the ground. In my opinion, I don't think it's so much beyond just trying to put on his grappling. He's he's a fighter. There's you don't become the double champ without with their striking. You know what I mean? He's a different kind of level. He's a amazing athlete. I think that people are gonna be surprised to see his whole game. You know, I wanna ask you a question. I just asked Owen, was there any point over the past year where you are. Worried that this would go off the rails a little bit that he's so good. He's so talented, but it was just too much stuff happening outside. You know, the thing that happened at bell tower with, you know, with his friend fighting probably work Charlie ward of seeing if the Knicks point guard Charlie ward, and and what happened in Brooklyn, of course. Was there ever any worry that this would go down the route of, you know, so many other great fighters were wouldn't get back on track and he wouldn't be able to fulfil his destiny. I don't think so because I know him and I know him like on a personal level, I always like he's always level headed and everything like that. And you know, sometimes the media and all this stuff is just like, gets a little bit out of hand, but I know him as a person. I know him on a personal level. So I see what he wanted. I know he wants to fight and I know all I know he's a good person. I knew he'll be fine. Okay. He's one of the smartest most like switched on people. I know you know, he's always on about everything and no, he wanted his fight and yeah, I never never worried about the. If any, if there was anybody to worry about to be have because I know he's met, he's different in the head. Okay. Has your mother doing? She's good. She's good. Yeah. How do you? Yeah, yeah, hope so. She doesn't say it. No, yes, she does, but you never know. Does she like that you fight? She actually thought that the last fight she would have been a little bit more scared. Apparently. She was saying she was fine. She sat in the front row. I think when I got hit with a couple couple Shashi was probably. She's always calling me. He worked on your striking do awhile wants. Wants. Doing and she's always all me about if anybody is a fan of my biggest fans her, or, you know, she's always making sure I'm staying on track and stuff like that. Have you noticed a difference in your celebrity after one?.
