"Joins US ON SPORTS BYLINE. He authored a new book. That takes a look at controversial player and manager Billy Martin when he was the manager of the Oakland A.'s and to foia shares the story of how the fate of the franchise was saved by his Swagger. His Hustle and more than a little electricity and his book is called. Billy Ball Billy Martin and the resurrection of the Oakland a's first of all Dale. The Oakland A.'S. Had hit bottom back in nineteen seventy nine. They lost one hundred eight games. Tell me how they got to the bottom. Yeah Well Charlie Philly first of all this rise when I tell you that grew up Listening to your great as talk in the eighties Dally Andro and Love Your Trivia nights used to has so great talking to families since I'm from the Bay area about this book so thank you Yeah Charlie Finley He of course you know you brought the as to Oakland from Kansas City in nineteen sixty eight three championships. The open seventy two seventy three and seventy four However free agency was introduced in the mid seventies and and phillies own ownership of bottle. As you know what what's to draft. He had a great nose for talent. He would draft talent in signing for a long period of time. Well Free Agency changed all that. Because some of the star players were able to shop their their services to the highest bidder team but by the late seventies the fairly was running the as really a a shoestring budget on December fourteenth. Nineteen seventy seven. They announced that he had sold the as to oil. Tycoon named Marvin Davis in Denver. And Davis is GonNa take me as to play at Mile High Stadium for the nineteen seventy eight season. So the as the as our last one hundred and eight games the nineteen seventy-nine. They drew less than three hundred and seven thousand people started call. Triple eight the Oakland pathetic and baseball. Both people for the lack of stability but the great question. Yeah Free Agency. Kind of took the as a on a free fall in the late seventies until really billy dot. They're fairly hired him on February twenty. First One thousand nine hundred. You know what's interesting about that? Is that if you know Charlie. Finley's personality of his prickliness. And if you think about Billy Martin in his personality It was a little bit unusual. Why did this marriage even start right? And it's great and I have a chapter in the book called on couple and it was really weird because many thought. Why would these to unite? But it really was A MARRIAGE OF CONVENIENCE BILLY. Martin needed a job after George. Steinbrenner fired him. The previous October after an altercation with the marshmallow salesman Joseph Cooper in In Minnesota in Minnesota Hotel and that three billion it'd be be hired by daily and Finley had just fired a Jim Marshall. Who was the manager for the as much in nineteen seventy nine and It's interesting that fairly hired Martin. And the announcement was EPA Drake Hotel in Chicago. Feeling had dropped his two hundred dollars. Business like To California because he expected to be somewhere else. But you're exactly right but it worked greatly because Philly was only his boss until August when the Haas family came in the picture in August but Finlay let wet Barnard pretty much run the show in the field and it really a spark franchise and it proved to be a master stroke because by nineteen eighty two the eighth drawn what point seven million from that three hundred six thousand mark in nineteen seventy nine. I know Billy Martin was from the Oakland area but what was it that interested him and becoming the manager of the as yeah just was from the hometown area. He was born in Berkeley. And and even when Berry Martin Ron? When he ended his career playing for the twins he hung hung with the twins as a coach and even when he was coaching twins with twenty into the nineteen sixties. He knew Charlie who was who was on the Eighth Kansas City. He Knew Charlie was GONNA move it American League team that those as to that open area and he always I been a manager of the even he was monitoring the progress of the Oakland Coliseum was being built in the nineteen sixties so in Philly Lows who remember Finley learning with bringing Billy Martin. I'm on board in Nineteen seventy to replace John Nachman McNamara but that never materialized but yeah that was that was a marriage that philly and billy always flirted working together. Nearly always flirty flirty would have billions manager but it didn't materialize to that. February nineteen eighty. How good was Billy Martin? As manager just generally speaking. I think what what made billy first of all he connected with the working class in every city when an owner when it went an owner fire. Billy Martin they had a really take into consideration. Now to Sandra GonNA react for. Example Cavalry Rookies in nineteen sixty nine when he fired. Billy billy the fan for the jets schedule Boycott Protest. Billy was a manager. Rhonda Cock newly put pressure on the defense. He was getting into a manager's head. He would keep them guessing their stories in the book in nineteen eighty work. Billy just frustrates sparky Anderson. And Jack Boris than and after he did a triple steel and still a home lands Paris. What into the DUGOUT COLISEUM? It broke the the water cooler there so he had. He had a knack to be to able to crush her and constantly. Keep the defenses on their toes. Tell me a little bit about after he took over the team. What did he do to remake it? Get it out of the doldrums. Great question and wh- a Lotta the bass player's who still these young as players. Who are in their twenties and they still have a loyalty ability billy today if he came in and he brought discipline that nineteen seventy nineteen but lack of discipline. He brought discipline and he simply just made. These young kids believe they did. These kids reach the plane. Front of seven hundred fifty bands at the Oakland Coliseum and Nike Seventy nine. That only bill comes in triple the tennis courts they start winning. They almost draw. Draw this little little over eight hundred thousand in nineteen eighty and I was sitting. He's kids the same roster. The last one hundred days in nineteen thirty nine billy. Just like he did other teams. He has an ability just hypnotized players in the belief that you win and he did that with his Okla team as well. You talk in the book about the two Billy Martin's and having been here in Oakland. When he was the manager I certainly do understand that from conversations. I had with him. There was the baseball genius. Billy Martin and the troubled soul talk to me about each one of 'em great great question. Yeah the the troubled soul and with that was a very Sometimes hard loser. It could be difficult. It came under the the the the two of Casey stangl Katie's tangles. Study a lot of psychology and billy US Billy Martin's to read a lot of psychology books. Any use psychology On his players and how to manage how to motivate some times. He intimidated his players. Or use other coaches that are other players to to do that He had he had anybody what he would do. Sometimes he would get on a player. Maybe embarrassed player so other players would see in into clubhouse and fall back so he had a very unconventional. Of course we know about the drinking and some of the fight team dot into but the baseball genius can just see just. It's not that easy when he didn't every stop. While when I became the manager the towards the nineteen sixty nine he resurrected that feeds the first place in division the division. We didn't last long and he went off the mad at the Tigers. The same thing but I'm to over ninety wins. Then he completely resurrected Texas Rangers. Baseball AFTER BOB. Short bring the team from Washington. There there were. They were dead then. Of course we know the championship to to the Yankees and seventy seven and and brought them to the age of nineteen eighty. He just really just had this next lot. And everything and that's the great part of the story. Billy Ball. Is this whole marketing campaign. Billy Ball this whole resurrection read on the Front Cover of Time magazine. It was casual riding on the shoulders of his flawed guy. Dale is with us. He's talking about his latest book. Called Billy Billy Martin and the resurrection of the Oakland as Billy Ball come about. I mean it was a big campaign when he was with the Oakland A.'s. But how who developed that Billy Ball? The Term Deli Ball was first around when you managed the Yankees fact. There was a book called Billy Ball when he managed the Yankees when it came to the as spring in one thousand nine hundred eighty Scottsdale fairly hired Billy Martin. A day before spring training started attending before. So you have a lot of bread prepped. To make his team up he immediately made a difference. He really made a difference during spring training. Jim Essien the slowest runner on off the team stole home successfully and that proved everybody. Jim Ethnic Conceal Home. We can't so what's all these players. Got That on the survey third bag. They were expected to steal if they got the size of Clay Boyer. So yeah so Ralph widely the former Oakland Tribune columnists he happened to be Scottsdale to watch a game and he was there which Jim if he had the slowest runner on the home and he had he penned a column on March Twenty Third Nineteen Eighty March twenty third one thousand nine hundred eighty and the Oakland Tribune. And that's where he he. I coined the word Billy Ball at least the Oakland A.'s. Version of Billy Ball. One of the things that did surprise me. Was that the Ricky Henderson. Billy Martin relationship blossomed and bloomed. I suppose it was because of his speed and his his talent and everything but it seemed to be more than that. Was there something more to that that made it successful? Even A it was a billy's aggressive style of emphasis on aggressive base. Running really worked for Ricky Henderson. When he got there he also he also was ricky. Ricky's mentor billy. Also try to help them help them learn how to but the first Ricky's first year in one thousand nine hundred eighty nine hundred eighty two hundred bases only maury wills and Lou Brock. Did it did it at the time as you know in nineteen eighty two ricky shattered lou? Brock's all time stolen base record. He ended up stealing one hundred and thirty bases. Your even the people I talk to. Even when when Ricky joined the Yankee he was never really comfortable unless Billy Martin was managing there so yeah. They had this lifelong connection. And to this day. Ricky Henderson still very loyal Billy Martin. There is a time or think people may or may not know that really billy Martin was somebody that could really blow up a team. I mean they were different in the clubhouse. They were different on the field as well. Why did he not try for more consistency? Yeah he that was. That was the billy billy when Billy Billy came to a club. He was always. You always had a short term strategy. When owners brought billionth the managed to rebuild. 'cause he wasn't a very patient guy he wanted to win and he was. GonNa pour his soul into winning now. And so he had to with a very limited Oakland a's roster we talked about the roster that lock one hundred eight games in nineteen seventy nine. He has to be creative. Is Strategy was for starting pitchers to piss complete games? Bob Lazy the Lefty Reliever with leaving leading the club thing with six. So Billy Barton did didn't have a rich doctor Davis like he didn't York he just managed to smoke and mirrors hidden ball trick every day. That just just kept apology. Managers on toast and by Nineteen eighty-one there were facing the New York Yankees in the Al. Everybody I pretty much knew as they got to know the HA's family which had bought the team that that was not going to work out that relationship. That wasn't the way they handled themselves publicly meaning the host family or professionally and you just knew it was going to be a matter of time. Did you not yeah not in November of one thousand nine hundred eighty Iran? The Haas family made a daily Martin. I gave him keys to the kingdom. They made him the player in addition to his managerial duties. They made him the the players. The Director of player development and they really couldn't have been more benevolent billy. And and he got along to this day. Roy is hard cock highly of him and and and it was really happy to work with him. And but you're right. It ended really in an August of nineteen. That really signified the end of the billy. Martin Erin Oakland. He has some tax issues in one of the Hawks family to pay some of some of the taxes from the salary. The problem is he didn't have a six year salary and the hostage wouldn't pay the money and that that that's afternoon Thursday afternoon at August is when him and his coaches roughed up his office and By the world series of Nineteen ninety-two. Billy was fired and he joins the Yankees for the nineteen eighty three season. What do you think is like I say is going to be with the Oakland A.'s? Boy I think If if people if Billy Ball always kinda fun. Exciting era of baseball with Ricky Henderson Henderson. The stolen bases the Fund Billy Martin Campaign And it was always a fun era. I think With this book with more information coming back coming out I think my focus was really in nineteen eighty. If it weren't for the excitement that billy brought to Oakland the Oakland area this first. Three months of the season I wonder if the family would be even interested in purchasing the as I mean there they were around in the late seventies when Charlie was trying to to sell to sell the club so Yeah they just His influence especially with the story of him coming back home and always Kinda busy as always on his radar to manage tax law. Dale I appreciate be sure to check out the book. It's called Billy Ball Billy Martin and the resurrection of the Oakland A.'s. Very interesting read about a very interesting time in baseball. With a very interesting personality we continue with more of you and sports byline.

No, this is not this is a forty three year old man, and he was arrested while operating on intoxicated at two thirty A M near the intersection of Coolidge highway. What state it's his Huntington woods. Oakland township. I'll have to look it up during the break because I it's an actual police things. So it was hard for me to find a public safety. Officer saw demands vehicle driving fifty four miles a thirty mile per hour zone. I'm thirty in the morning. The responding officer was immediately overcome by. 'cause by the smell of intoxicants during the traffic. Drivers stated that he had been at a restaurant in Troy and was trying to get for New York. New york. Yes. Probably New York trying to get the interstate. When asked how much he had to drink? The driver said to Tito's sugar free. During Tito's making a sugar free vodka grace. You would know this better than me, do you mean like to one hundred and fifty milliliter Tito's there might have got his his drink order in his coffee. Order makes. I don't think it's hard to start waiting to be drafted Massachusetts, Massachusetts state trooper. I think if you really feel like, you know, someone who can drop the charges you should wait on that you shouldn't say it. So they can write it in the report because then whoever, you know, to help you because I mean, isn't that the lesson of Allie Bibo who I am you just you you talk at your ton. Right. And then you make the call to daddy. And the the report goes into the circular file. It's a lot easier to ask for forgiveness than permission when it comes to let the professionals do the brooming, right? Don't try to do the brooming while you're also trying to explain what to Tito sugar-free means. 'cause you're just not in the right state of mind. Don't go to the state cop. Who's only been on the job for like a year. You may think it's on the level. Go to somebody who had the brass somebody who's I dunno living with leeann chin, those, oh, let let the state let the case let whoever pulled you over think, he's got you. Oh, you really caught me. And then the next day when you sober up. That's when you go to that the head honcho and work your magic. This is just all hot tips that you're learning at the Howie Carr show. Video shows group of women allegedly trying to attack food core employees after their credit card was declined their credit card. This one group of women had just one credit card. Tribe. One of the women's credit card was declined. And she had a backup of girls who helped her a posse. Yes. This is a group of shoppers in a Houston mall. They were captured on camera yelling at employees in trying to jump the counter of Charlie's. Philly cheese steaks. So, you know, people make. People make fun of cops. But I mean, it's pretty terrifying theft the face down, a mob of Hungary women been refused service when they're desirous of cheese steaks up. So when the mob of hungry women get violent what's the rule there. Because obviously a male security guard can't lift his hands to a female. But to Bob how do you deal with that? What are the what are the rules of engagement? Well, let me tell you. I what the women did. One of the women says when you need your peyser was throwing straws at the worker. While her friends yielded employees of the sandwich shop, that's when another woman, so they tried to kind of, you know, little set up a little pick. So the other one could get in there. She tried to jump over the glass partition that they have that people's germs. Don't get on the Philly cheese day toppings. She tried to jump over the glass partition to assault the workers. They would like you to know in this article that the workers had nothing to do with the fact that the credit card was declined. They didn't have control of Troy the guy who was saying. He knew the cop. That's at Michigan. Troy michigan. I think you think the woman with the declined credit card was a government employee. I was wondering the same thing is this one of the tragedies the Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer speaking of at their press conference a couple of hours ago when they praised the courage, the courage of the government workers trying to get across that glass partition to get to the cheese steak. Do we have any names, by the way? No, not in this case guys this new segment or this police blotter. Friday is powered as always by pants dozy baking company, celebrating over one hundred years of bacon excellence since one thousand nine hundred sixteen we thank the dozy per always sponsoring police blotter fax Friday, letting it all hang out when you order a Tito, can you get a Guerande? "We're taking your calls at six five one nine eight nine nine two to six and toll free eight six six nine eight nine nine two two six so right before the top of the hour. We were talking about. The president's state of the union address, which is scheduled for January twenty nine house speaker Nancy Pelosi says not a good idea because of the shutdown. She is used the the reason is because they can't guarantee the security because you've got the president's full cabinet there except for one member of the joint chiefs of staff, you have the justices of the supreme court there. You know, you have both chambers of congress there, and you know, security has to be guaranteed. Now. Those who are in charge of that. They say that they could probably. Probably secure it. This is a senior homeland security officials said the agency is ready and well prepared for the event. Some of the some of the other questions with this can the president legally request to deliver the state of the union in the house over the speakers objections. Steny Hoyer majority leader in the house said, no. Although the speaker Nancy Pelosi is not formally disinvited the president from giving the speech, she has suggested speech would not be a good idea. And she says it should be delivered. And right now, you know in the early years of our nation's country, the state of the union address was was that it was it was written wasn't until. Decades into our country that that. But he started the president started to giving giving the the address the bull chambers of the house and the Senate. Heuer responded to the idea that within his right? And that's the technical term and the answer to that is no you can't do it and less. He's invited. The president comes here at the invitation of congress, and particularly the house to address the congress of the United States. Looking at article two section three of the US constitution it grants. The president the ability on extraordinary occasions convene either or both chambers of congress. But that provision hasn't been utilized since one thousand nine hundred forty seven and nineteen forty eight when president Truman explored this option twice and convening doesn't necessarily mean the president this time President Trump would be allowed to speak. And when former president Truman made use of article two section three to convene congress you did. So when congress was out of session. Both Democrats and Republicans have vowed to keep congress in session until the si-. The shutdown is resolved. Otherwise for the speech in the house. Both chambers of congress must approve a resolution to use the house chamber and have both bodies meet in joint session of congress. This has not happened yet. Should the Senate move to host the president? Instead, a resolution would still be needed. But Steny Hoyer in an apparent break was speaker Pelosi seemingly having no problems with allowing President Trump to speak. When asked if he'd be open to the president speaking in person in the house with the state of the union Hoyer said, yeah, sure. Asked. If Nancy Pelosi would agree. He said, I don't know what the discussions have been. In another split with this power speaker Hoyer again demurred when asked if walls are indeed an immorality. While your said, physical barriers are part of the solution. Protecting people it's moral if it's imprisoning people. It may. Well, be immoral. So it's gonna be interesting to see what happens here. Whether there's going to be a state of the union address. It'll be interesting to see if the Senate invites the president to give the state of the union address it in that chamber. Who who is the the guy out in California? Susan that said can't we just all get along. Rodney king. Rodney king. Very good. We we need applause for that. Fitter pattern applause when we get something. Right. But you're right. Yes. It was. Remember that because that happened in my life when I still had a memory. Now, if he had said it five years ago, and then you ask me who said it, I wouldn't payable to remember I figured the human brain out. Least mine. My brain my head. Is like a filing cabinet you open the drawer in the front, and you you put items in and then you push the door the drawer shot an items fall out the back of my hat. That's the only way I can describe it. Yeah. After is raising kids. I couldn't remember anything unless it was absolutely necessary and had to do with what I had to get down that day. Yeah. Yeah. It's interesting. Isn't it is aging? Yeah. It sucks. Don't beat around the Bush give you really feel about it. There are good some good things about it. Okay. Well, let me know when you are you mellowing out you age. Oh, yeah. I'm tired. You know, I can't run the racist fast as I used to be able to run it. Yeah. And also, I don't care. Isn't that funny? I really don't care. I used to be such a go getter motivated get her done. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And now, I really don't care. My kids are raised. Yeah. They're good kids. And I I'm tired now. But I know you don't don't confuse that with not carrying too. You still take a lot of pride in. What you do? Oh, I do I still in now to I'm moving into going back to volunteering. I used to volunteer in my twenty s before I had children. I used to do a lot of entering. I was a big brother big sister. I did the. Barbara bushes was Barbara Bush or what's knows Nancy Reagan the literate? This was back in the eighties the late eighties and. I did a lot of entering egg. I really received a lot of joy from that used to have a dog that was a good citizen, and we'd visit nursing homes, then I had kids right? Volunteers time for anything. And that's one thing. I really really want to go back and do and one of the things on my bucket list. Is I knit an ace to teach knitting, really? Yep. And I have always wanted to teach knitting too battered women women in domestic distress. Yeah. Because it you can kind of find your zen when you knit, and it's a good way to just kind of let go of things in your head and concentrate on something, you know, like if you do e kinda hobby you can let go of. Thoughts that preoccupy your mind and just kind of let go let yourself go in your hobby. So that is my big next thing in life is to do that. I knew somebody that was a tremendous knitter and crocheter and all of that my mother, oh, you're bomb. Yeah. She was really good at that stuff. And she had all boys did any of you, boys. Take on that nature. Crochet? My grandma taught me. She was incredible. She. To make everything that was of the trend time the beer can hats. The granny square. I remember my mother made a ski sweater for me. Oh, nice and warm it out to we had a meet at Theodore worth the ski jump that used to be. Yes. And you know, I had it on. And I took it off to go jump. You. Don't want a big sweater on right? And somebody stole it. Oh, and it was the first time at worn it. Oh, I bet your mom was heartbroken heartbroken is. Right. But I try I tried to soften it by telling her will somebody must've thought you were fabulous because they love the sweater enough to save so much, right? A lot of work goes into sweaters. Oh, yeah. Increasing decreasing and. She meets sweaters for both of our sons nine little. Yeah. Great. I've never heard of this place. Charlie's Philly steaks you ever heard of that place. In Houston taxes. I should've saved the story for Sheila. Yeah. Because she's from Texas. She probably would be very Houston. She's Houston a group of mall shoppers were caught on camera yelling and trying to jump over the counter of this Charlie's. Philly steaks inside the Galleria mall food court the outburst took place Sunday when the woman in the group had her card declined. That's a reason to get angry over a counter. In in footage captured by somebody who shared the shocking video on Twitter. A woman can be seen throwing straws. While her friends yell at the employee's as some of the group starts to walk away. Another runs up and tries to jump over the glass partition on the counter at one point one of the women comes up and knocks over what appears to be napkins and other items sitting next to the cash. Register several witnesses recorded the altercation on their cell phones. According to the assistant manager of the group exited the mall before police officers arrived on the scene the amount of damage causes not being reported. Goofy. So we were talking about as you age, you become more relaxed. Yeah. Things aren't as important as the appear. Why if your card is declined, why do you get angry at someone of the cash? Register who's probably making minimum wage, and it's an unfair fight you. They can't defend themselves. Start yelling back there and get fired. You know, it's not a fair fight. And it just. I've seen people that have just berated cashiers. And it really angers me. You know, it just it's wrong. It's just wrong. Oh, I agree. I agree. You don't when I worked at Costco for the three months. Yeah. I was amazed. How? Nice people were because both of my children have worked in retail. And both of them have told me horror stories, and I had never worked in retail before. I'd been a waitress, but I'd never worked in retail. So I was expecting especially during the holiday season when it gets really really busy to see some really bad states of humanity. But I really didn't everyone was very very nice. In all situations happen things get you know, computers mess up transactions and. I was really surprised. So when you do see bad behavior. I think it is. We gotta remind ourselves. It's few and far between and those people are really either one having an awful day, and they're wrong to take it out on anybody else. But just having an awful day or they're part of the lunatic fringe of just really yucky people. And there's not a lot of those out there. I have to believe that, you know, eighty percent of people are all good with good intentions. Yeah. Going into WalMart. I always make it a point of being a really really nice to the cashiers because they get berated a lot you think. So because I've.

"Eight six six nine eight nine nine two two six. So right before the top of the hour. You have both chambers of congress there, and you know, security has to be guaranteed. Now. Those who are in charge of that. They say that they could probably. They could probably secure it. This is a senior homeland security officials of the agency is ready and well prepared for the event. Some of the some of the other questions with this can the president legally request to deliver the state of the union in the house over the speakers objections. Steny Hoyer majority leader in the house said, no. Although the speaker Nancy Pelosi is not formally disinvited the president from giving the speech, she has suggested a speech would not be a good idea. And she says it should be delivered. And right now, you know in the early years of our nation's country, the state of the union address was was that it was it was written wasn't until. Decades into our country that. We started the president started to giving giving the the address to both chambers of the house and the Senate. You Hoyer responded to the idea that within his right, and that's a technical term and the answer to that is no you can't do it and less. He's invited. The president comes here at the invitation of congress, and particularly the house to address the congress of the United States. Now, looking at article two section three of the US constitution it grants. Both Democrats and Republicans have vowed to keep congress in session until the Cy this, the shutdown is resolved. Otherwise, we're the speech in the house. Both chambers of congress must approve a resolution to use the house chamber and have both bodies meet in a joint session of congress. This has not happened yet. Should the Senate move to host the president? Instead, a resolution would still be needed. Steny Hoyer in an apparent break was speaker Pelosi. Seemingly having no problems with allowing President Trump to speak when asked if he'd be open to the president speaking in person in the house with the state of the union Hoyer said, yeah, sure. Asked. If Nancy Pelosi would agree. He said, I don't know what the discussions have been. In another split with house speaker Hoyer again demurred when asked if walls are indeed an immorality. All your said, physical barriers are part of the solution. Like, if it's protecting people it's moral if it's imprisoning people. It may. Well, be immoral. So it's gonna be interesting to see what happens here. Whether there's going to be a state of the union address. It'll be interesting to see if the Senate invites the president to give the state of the union address it in that chain. Who was who is the the guy out in California? Susan that said can't we just all get along. Rodney king. Rodney king. Very good. We we need applause for that. Mr. pitter-patter applause when we get something. Right. But you're right. Yes. It was how do you remember that because that happened in my life when I still had a memory? Now, if he had said it five years ago, and then you ask me who said it, I wouldn't be able to remember I figured the human brain out. Or at least mine. My brain my head. Is like a filing cabinet you open the drawer in the front, and you you put items in and then you push the door the drawer shot an items fall out the back of my hat. That's the only way I can describe it. Yeah. Yeah. After is raising kids. I couldn't remember anything unless it was absolutely necessary and had to do with what I had to get down that day there. Yeah. It's interesting, isn't it? Aging. Yeah, it sucks. Don't beat around the Bush. Feel about it. There are good some good things about it. Okay. Well, let me know when are you mellowing out as you age? Oh, yeah. I'm tired. You know, I can't run the racist fast as I used to be able to run it. Yeah. Yeah. And also, I don't care. Isn't that funny? I really don't care. I used to be such a go getter motivated get her done. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And now, I really don't care. My kids are raised. They're good kids. And I I'm tired now. But I know you don't don't confuse that with not not carrying too. You still take a lot of pride in what you do. Oh, I do. And I still in now to I'm moving into going back to volunteering. I used to volunteer in my twenty s before I had children I used to do a lot of volunteering. I was a big brother. Big sister. I did the Barbara bushes. Visit Barbara Bush. What's knows Nancy Reagan the literate? This was back in the eighties the late eighties and. I just I did a lot of volunteering eight eight I really you received a lot of joy from that used to have a dog that was a good citizen and we'd visit nursing homes. I had kids right? No time to volunteering for anything. And that's one thing. I really really want to go back and do and one of the things on my bucket list. Is I knit an ace to teach knitting, really? Yep. And I have always wanted to teach knitting too battered women women in domestic distress. Because it you can kind of find your zen when you knit and. It's a good way to just kind of let go of things in your head and concentrate on something, you know, like if you do any kind of hobby you can let go of. Thoughts that preoccupy your mind and just kind of let go let yourself go in your hobby. So is my big next thing in life is to do that. I knew somebody that was a tremendous knitter and crocheter and all of that my mother. Oh, your mom. Yeah. She was really good at that stuff the in. She had all boys. Yeah. Did any of you boys? Take on that nature. Crochet? My grandma taught me. She was incredible. She. Used to make everything that was of the trend time the beer can hats. The granny square fast. I remember my mother made a ski sweater for me. Oh nice. And. I wore it out to we meet at Theodore worth at the ski jump that used to be out. Yes. And you know, I had it on. And I took it off to go jump. You. Don't want a big sweater on right? And somebody stole it. Oh, and it was the first time at worn it. Oh, I bet your mom was heartbroken heartbroken is. Right. But I try I tried to soften it by telling her. Well, somebody must've thought you were fabulous because they love the sweater enough to save so much, right? Yeah. A lot of work goes into sweaters. Oh, yeah. Lot of increasing decreasing. She meets sweaters for both of our sons nine little. Yeah. They were great. I've never heard of this place. Charlie's Philly steaks you ever heard of that place. In Houston, Texas. I should've saved the story for Shalita. Yeah. Because she's from Texas. She probably would be very Houston. Yeah. She's Houston a group of mall shoppers were caught on camera yelling and trying to jump over the counter of this Charlie's fillies stakes inside the Galleria mall food court the angry uppers to play Sunday. When a woman in the group had her card declined. That's a reason to get angry. You know over a counter. Footage captured by somebody who shared the shocking video on Twitter. A woman can be seen throwing straws. While her friends yell at the employees as some of the groups starts to walk away. Another runs up and tries to jump over the glass partition on the counter at one point one of the women comes up and Knoxville or what appears to be napkins and other items sitting next to the cash. Register several witnesses recorded the altercation on their cell phones. According to the assistant manager of the group exited the mall before police officers arrived on the scene the amount of damage causes not been reported. Goofy. So we were talking about as you age, you become more relaxed. Yeah. Things aren't as important as the appear. You know, why you know, if your card is declined, why do you get angry at someone of the cash? Register who's probably making minimum wage, and it's an unfair fight you. They can't defend themselves. You know, these start yelling back there and get fired. You know, it's not a fair fight. And it just. You know, I've seen people that have just berated cashiers. And it really angers me, you know. It just it's wrong. This is wrong. I agree. I agree. When I worked at Costco for the three months. Yeah. I was amazed. How nice people were because both of my children have worked in retail. And both of them have told me horror stories, and I had never worked in retail before. I'd been a waitress, but I'd never worked in retail. I have to believe that, you know, eighty percent of people are all good with good intentions. Yeah. Going into WalMart. I always make it a point of being a really really nice to the cashiers because they get berated a lot you think. So. Yeah. Because I've heard it from the cashiers. Oh, okay. I'll see all your day going. You know? And and it's usually. I during during the week before going leading up to Christmas. It was I was at WalMart picking something up. And I asked the cashier cashier. How you doing? She goes, I can't wait for this holiday season with people are nasty Absalom nasty. That's so sad. Yeah. And the mall. She was bringing my stuff up. We talked a little bit. And she's she's good at she just said, thank you. For listening for for being nice. And isn't that sad? That is sad. Yeah. There's something wrong with that were that that's become uncommon for somebody to be nice to a cashier. Flounder? It wasn't where I was working. No, that's good to hear. And I I was expecting to see more after my daughter's filled me with their stories with boy. My daughter can. He has had some run ins, really, yes. And you want to know the worst. Sender's who moms with little kids? Why why was there? Patient. They're probably they're already pulling their hair out because of their kids. But yeah, my daughter was called the worst word in the world. You're kidding. By a mom in front of her kids. And it was like she was like what? Couldn't even register it because she couldn't believe she heard that. That's crazy. Boy, the way she tells the story is really good too. 'cause she tells it all the pumps it up. But it's like unbelievable. And I felt I felt not so bad for my daughter because my daughter's a big girl she can handle it felt really bad for the little kids. Describe what story learning they're learning that they can get away with calling a horrible names. Yeah. Especially somebody who's working as a cashier. And if they fight back verbally, we're going to be fired. Right. Yeah. Oh, Mon had to be very polite. And just you know, she tries to kill people with kindness and just thank you very much. But you know, what the very fun part of this thing where she worked was a place that a person had to give them your driver's license to take a piece of material with them. And then when you return this item, you get your driver's license back, and so the woman had her hissy fit, and when she stormed off, she forgot, her license. So then my daughter got to yell outgoing. Oh, ma'am, you forgot your license. So after she had her big magnum opus hissy fit. She had to walk back with her tail between her legs. That's great. Thank you. Yeah. Unbelievable. He actually say, thank you. I don't think she did. I think she just grabbed the darn carton stewed away and huffed huffed. We'll take a break. Do you have any stories like that jump in our phone number.

"I heard from my uncle dug up in northern Minnesota. He sends me a photograph via text of his home thermometer, which was minus thirty seven minus thirty-seven. I think they've warmed up a bit this morning. Let's go to Doug now. Good morning, Doug. How are you? Pretty good. All right. How far are you from the Canadian border? That's the first question. Probably by road about one hundred twenty miles. Okay. So you're way up north a bit cool. No. He was actually actually that picture was thirty nine point seven. Oh my gosh. Even colder. Yeah. Yeah. Nine point seven but this morning. Okay. So you've warmed up. Now. You're finally getting a little dose of Al Gore. Yeah. So doug. I mean nowadays life is a little easier with it dips to almost forty below just because of modern, conveniences, technology, etc. But back when you were a kid, you know, when when you and my mom were back on the farm, and it would certainly this cold talk about what life was like back dead. You know, you didn't have the, you know, the clothing and stuff like you have. No, he's not lightweight clothing. Stuff, and you know, hightech, clothing and stuff. You had to bundle up. He was it was it was bad. And I mean, you still have to work outdoors, especially if you're a farmer, and you you kids were farm kids. You know, you'd you'd still have to go out to the bar, and you'd still have to milk those cows you'd have to do the other work. So I'm just guessing you sorta toughened up and get used to it. Just go to work. It is an all nowadays, you know. You know that Christianity either. So you know, you got to figure it out in the equation. But boy. We don't is. No one. It's a breezy. How 'bout dug in terms of cars? I know I've talked to you about this in the past. But I always find this so fascinating because karst the people who live, for example in our high Sierra they come up from the San Francisco Bay area there weekend warriors, they go to their cabin. They get a cold spell. They tried to start the car and the darn thing just won't start. He the batteries dead or or maybe in some cases, you're oil's getting all gunky, but talk to us about nowadays versus in the past. Because when you're getting ten twenty, oh, that's got to impact the way a car starts. Let alone drives. Oh, yeah. But with synthetic oils and stuff for they don't take up like the old oil used to do. And then the electronic cars. No, are we better, you know, you got like chronic ignition. And you don't have the old points system and coils and all that. And then the battery a lot better, and it's an under a fuel injected. So there they start they start. Okay. Now. How about the tires though, when you get a tire sitting out the driveway? My guess. Oh, yeah. Are you kind of have to drive a little ways, you know, you get bumper-to-bumper debunked. Because. Square. You know, what I'm saying they got square spot. But. You know, the roundout. Doug. So let me see when so how much snow? Do you have outside the house right now? Is there any? Oh, yeah. Yeah. We got. Balka where we got probably fourteen inches of snow. Okay. So you got fourteen inches of snow? Insulates grown quite well because that's not always a good insulator. So. That see that's something. We don't realize out here. The farmers really do rely on that snow to cover the ground and insulate the soil talk to us about what to explain that to our listeners well certain crops like hay crops, like oh, clover and alfalfa on. Crops like that. That know they go from year to year stuff about snow cover on it. Then they'll come back in spring. But they will they will winter kill if you don't have snow cover when you give gold. It will winter kill. That's a big deal to Doug. You're up there in northern Minnesota. And you've been watching politics for a long time. Have you ever seen a country so polarized and have you ever seen a party? So crazy as the Democrats. No, no. And it seems like it's getting worse. And I mean. The people were in the past that were. Left wing, or you know, like democrat flake Kennedy. Nowadays. They'd be they'd be. They'd be conservatives. Yeah. Yeah. You know? I it just I mean, these people they're just they're just looney. I mean date. They keep blaming crumbs for you know for. You don't want to meet you don't wanna do this. And that bologna ones that are acting like little kids. Yeah. And yet they have the media on their side. So everybody thinks well, they must be telling the truth, right? I guess Trump doesn't want to negotiate. Yeah. I know that. Deal CNN and. NBC junk. Are you still wearing the make America? Great hat. I got her. I got her signed up ready to go. Refreshing, Doug, seriously, if Katie think about this if somebody was seen in the bay area way or wearing a make America. Great hat. Oh, jeez. That's a good way to get jumped around here. Yeah. You could actually get hit or or beat up or something or spit on or something, absolutely. That's the whole deal there. I'm real radicals. I'll tell you what. Immigration deal. That's a big deal to get a handle on it. They better get a handle on it. We're gonna lose their Dan country. I'll go Doug. Thanks for spending. A little time with us up there in Minnesota. Gladys warmed up to what you say. Two degrees. Now. It's probably to no six Bill O this morning earlier. But there's there's no wind or nothing. So we don't have wind chill. That's no big deal. And take this with a well. Okay. That's just another another side. I was watching those guys play that football game yesterday down Kansas City. And like I say at the end of the game is about fifteen and you see these football players they're wearing no sleeves on their arms. They're not wearing gloves. And it's amazing. How a body is capable of actually staying warm and those type of temperatures. Yeah. It is. You know, but. Them guys. They're in good shape, physically good shape. So. They can take it. And they got they got some high-tech stuff underneath that. You're not for you know, they probably got armor, all clothes and stuff and all the stuff, you know. But they're like, they're pretty efficient modern clothing. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. Uncle dug up in northern Minnesota. All right. Doug. Thanks for joining us. Good one. All right there. He goes there. He goes. And of course, that was from yesterday's broadcast. But so charming we had to replay it this morning for a one K SF, oh bump bump, right? And again, that's something. Most of us have never experienced that here in California because in that cold, weather, and you you sit that car out on the pavement or even in your garage for that matter when it's that cold thirty nine below. The bottom of that tire squares out and other bad thing to do when it's that cold is leva soda and your car because they'll blow up don't wanna do that. Okay. So now, you take us to food. Let's let's go to the food news perfect. Let's to food get a little time here before traffic. So we've got a group of mall shoppers caught on camera. This is at Charlie's. Philly steaks inside the Galleria mall in Houston. Tall video video Twitter video. So we've got the girls at the counter and the card is declined. I don't know if it was I don't know what kind of car to was debit card credit card ubt. I have no idea. But it's declined. Oh my gosh. What happens after that? It's it's more than a hissy fit. Okay. They're going nuts. It becomes somewhat of race. Right. Because the people going crazy because the card was declined are African American the people behind the counter, all Hispanic. It's so you've got this war going on and the people behind the counter start standing up for themselves, and they while they're getting straw, dispensers. And napkin dispensers thrown at them, they're throwing like, you know. Kitchen apparatus back at them. Personally was not like a knife or anything thrown. But. Videos nuts. It's absolutely insane. This is like this is like a Chucky cheese fight on steroids. This is crazy. Okay. I got to get this. Blah. Nice language warning. Because I have a feeling. Get the customer. Then we got the Detroit man, formerly charged with several felonies after he shot at a dominoes pizza store window because his order wasn't ready. Okay. That seems to be a little a little intense. He became upset that his pizza was not ready for him to pick up when he arrived at the pizza shop. Before he asked the manager for a refund. He pulled out a gun shot out the front window. And you think you're just gonna get away with that? Right. Good. Let me see I got one more for you. Here. We talked about this earlier, but we never really got into it. Too far. What do you think about the gravy scented candle from KFC this gross to me? It is. I don't understand why you would want your house to smell like KFC gravy. Well, the other thing I've just wondering what chemicals are used in the candle to to create that smell in his that stuff. Good for you. What time are used to make gravy? Not a very natural smells. Okay. I want to know inqui-. We've got a commercial break to figure this out. I wanna know what's in the great. All right. Where I wanna know if those potatoes potatoes. Okay, we'll find out in just a moment here on case. Katie green traffic. Taking a look at your roadways.
