"When it's time for the tie fighter pilots to scramble. It's a very haunting alarm sound. Either that or something silly, like maybe a. Not so much in a war as a horn, I suppose. And I wonder. Yeah. So I never know whether to lead with the World Series or lead with other stuff I assume that many of our listeners are watching and paying attention to the World Series. I don't know. What percentage? Well, look, it's a regional sport, right? And 28 fan bases eliminated, right? So who knows? How many people are like, oh, we got to talk about the Phillies and the Astros again. Who cares? Talk about my team. Okay, so today are episode will be about the Pittsburgh pirate snow. Well, Ben, I think you've made a couple of mistakes here. Here's the first one. Okay. There is, I think, for many, there's one fan base, right? There is one fan base that is encompassing the 28 other teams that were eliminated and that is the Phillies. And then there are people who are the Astros. And this is a little simplistic, because I think there are neutral observers who are like some of these extras are pretty fun. And there are plenty of people who have continued frustration from 2017, but dusty baker. You know, like there's at least fans who have a grudge against the Phillies or sure, yeah, like maybe you're just like, look, I don't like the Astros, but I hate the Philly's more because I like the mets. Like maybe that's your Santa clause and you got booed in Philly, although now you got cheered in Philly. So we did that wrong is undone. Yeah, I mean, why would we try to contain the feral? Weird horny energy of the Phillies fan base. It's perfect. I have much like, much like the LDH roster. I don't know how many notes. You're all delightful. Yeah. Well, I think that at this time of year, people expect to hear about the World Series on their baseball podcast, so we will play into their expectations. I do think that probably some people have mentally moved on and are looking ahead to next season, but perhaps those people are not going to be listening to a national baseball podcast anyway. Maybe they're only listening to local based pop podcasts that cover their teams, so I would imagine that people who listen regularly to effectively wowed are interested in the sport as a whole and the league wide landscape and there's nothing more prominent on that landscape right now than the World Series. Not telling anyone anything that they don't know. Just the only non World Series news really of note as we speak here is that the final managerial vacancy was filled. So the White Sox have a manager, they're going with a youth movement at manager. They have hired 53 year olds. Pedro grafa fall. And he is former minor league player, longtime future manager, right? One, ten manager candidate has interviewed many teams. Many times, they have decided he's there in and he has decided that Charlie montoyo is his man as bench coach. It seems like reportedly, so Montoya former bougie's manager and Reyes bench coach will be backing up, so that seems like a strong tandem at the top there. And I guess the only kind of wrinkle here is that had been with the royals for years and also been with other organizations with the Mariners, but he's been with the royals since 2013. He was their quality control coach, he was their catching coach. He was most recently their bench coach and he has interviewed for their managerial job twice. Now once it seemed like they were pretty set on Mike matheny to begin with. But he just recently during this recent round of interviews interviewed with the royals and they opted not to hire him and to hire Matt quatraro as we discussed recently. So I guess you might think that that sounds odd read it if he's this respected future manager candidate and he's been with the royals for years and he's been up for their job. Why wouldn't they just hire him? Does that ill or something should White Sox fans be worried that the royals did not hire the in-house candidate? I don't think so. I think that there could be any number of explanations for that really. Who knows? Maybe he had better interviews with one team than another or something, but I doubt it's even that. It's probably, well, it could be a combination of things, I guess. One thing maybe is that when you take a certain job with a team or an organization or any company, probably many of us have been in this position where you start in one capacity and then maybe your employer sees you as that person as that position and sometimes you have to go elsewhere to get a step up because you got hired to do one thing and maybe you're allowed to grow in that job and keep moving up the ladder, but maybe not maybe they see you as this and not that and you just have to go elsewhere for someone who will give you another bump up. It could also just be that they wanted to make a change, right? They wanted to bring in someone from outside the organization. The royals have not been super successful of late, which is almost certainly not Pedro grifa falls fault, but he was there. So if you want to send the signal that, oh, this is a new day for the Kansas City Royals organization and we're going to do things differently and it's going to be a bit of a break from the past. Then, I guess you would not be inclined to hire the bench coach who's there, right? And it could also be, I don't know, a perception that maybe you want a certain person to tackle a rebuilding team and another person to tackle a team that is expected to win now that is more veteran. Maybe the strengths are different. It's not so much developing players as winning with players who are already good. Who knows? But there are any number of reasonable explanations that I don't think cash that he kind of aspersions on him. It's just kind of one of those strange things, I guess, that he had to go elsewhere to get that gig, but good for him. Yeah, I mean, there's a lot that goes into these hiring processes and it could be any of the things you mentioned. It could just be like they've got blown away when they were interviewing external candidates. There's a lot that can go on there and we don't have, again, like I don't think we have terrific insight into the particular qualifications or how one substantiates those in a managerial interview as outside analysts because we don't, you know, we can't observe that stuff and we can't observe the process once the hire has been made. So I think we are a little bit on the outside looking in on these things and I don't know. I think it'll be I'm going to be fine. The resume here is very impressive. So that's the reason to be like, oh gosh, this is going to go terribly, which isn't something you can always say for White Sox. That's right. And you're striking out in the right direction. Yeah, there's not only did you get someone who seemingly has all the credentials and checks all the boxes, but also it doesn't seem like it was a case of Jerry reinsdorf saying. This is going to be our manager. I don't care what anyone else says. So that's a good thing. This is the normal managerial hiring process as far as we can tell from afar. And sometimes you click with one person and you click more with another person, who knows. Anyway, glad he's getting that chance. And that all of these vacancies are filled or at least all the vacancies that are existing right now. So we don't have to revisit our discussion, I guess, from last time about the rates of the demographics of managers, not that anyone hiring changes things, all that appreciably, but last time we talked about this, which was very recently every vacancy, this winter had gone to a white candidate, and this one did not. So that's a slight change.

"Last few weeks, few teams in baseball have been hotter than the very talented previously disappointing and suddenly surging Toronto Blue Jays. And now Janssen rushes another one. His second home run of the night, another rocket. And it is 20 7 to three. Today, we're joined by the athletics Caitlin McGrath to look at why this team was a letdown to the point that they had a fire their manager while they had a winning record. In three key factors that have helped power their turnaround, including an emerging young ace with a lot of swagger. In a new manager with a surprising knack for keeping things lively in the Clubhouse. We walked into the car house and there's a DJ in the middle and he's spinning beats and playing Justin Bieber remix it and all this kind of stuff. So it was really fun. It's definitely a new thing walking into the Blue Jays Clubhouse and seeing a DJ. That's a first and it was first for me and I think it was a first for most of the players. Plus, with the young superstars Vladimir Guerrero junior and Bo Bichette both not living up to their own high standards, is there still hope for a big finish? From wondery, I'm Tiffany oshinsky. It's Friday, August 5th, and this is the lead. Caitlin McGrath, welcome back to the lead and thanks for taking the time to join us during this totally not hectic week at all in Major League Baseball. Yes, thank you for having me back. Of course, I'm happy to be here to talk about the Blue Jays again. It's been a hectic week. I'm in Tampa right now. I'll be heading to Minneapolis next for four games against the twins who made some noise at the trade deadline as well. So it should be an interesting stretch for the Blue Jays and the rest of the American League. Oh yeah, definitely. Well, let's take a minute to talk about the trade deadline before we get into the story of this blue Jay season. And the trade deadline, which we know took place on Tuesday, the Jays did not make the same big splash as a team like the Padres, but then again, no one really did. So can you quickly tell us what Toronto got done? Yeah, of course. So the Blue Jays did not make a splashy type of deal as the Padres did. And honestly, not like the Blue Jays did a year ago when they acquired Jose brioche, who was one of the best starters on the market. So the Blue Jays had a bit of more of an understated deadline. I think they improved at the margins without making maybe that huge blockbuster type deal. So overall they added four players, Mitch white, who was kind of a swingman type pitcher who can start who can come out of the bullpen from the Dodgers. They added two relievers from the Marlins, Anthony bass, and Zach pop, who was a Canadian bonus coming back to his hometown team and as well as Whit merrifield, which kind of came out of left field, honestly. There's a lot to unpack with that acquisition, which I'm sure we'll get into, but I think that these deals all complement the roster, but for me, what it really underlines is obviously this front office thinks they've got a good core and exciting young core capable of being one of the most dangerous teams. And so these pieces raise the floor a little bit, but it's really up to the team that they have already assembled to raise that ceiling. So let's talk about what merryfield. He's probably the most notable name that they added in a lot of ways. And maryfield came from Kansas City and he literally could not play in Toronto in July because he wasn't vaccinated. He is now confirmed that he is vaccinated, but pretty interesting that they traded for this guy in the first place. You're right, it was kind of an unexpected move because all along, just covering the Blue Jays and following this team and knowing the circumstances around entering the country and all this kind of stuff has been a storyline that we've had to follow all year. So almost all of us covering the Blue Jays just completely ruled out any unvaccinated players because you assume they're not going to go after them because why would the team acquire a player that might not be able to play half the games in Toronto? The Blue Jays, again, we have to remember if we were looking down into the future, they're wanting to play for that top wildcard spot, and that top wildcard spot, the reward for getting the top wild card spot is that you would host a three game series all at home. So they want all their players to be there available. Well, let's talk about the team now as we mentioned at the top, this team has been playing much better lately. And we want to look at three key reasons why. So start at the beginning, what were the expectations for the Blue Jays coming into the season? Yeah, the blue cheese had really high expectations. Based on how they performed last year, especially down the stretch, they ended up winning 91 games last season, which fell just one win short of qualifying for the postseason. So disappointing end, but that seemed to fuel them a lot, to want to come back stronger. And so that I think was one of the sort of main motivations for them, looking at we looked like a dangerous team last year. No one wanted to face us down the stretch because we looked like we could make some noise in the playoffs. So this year we don't want to have that history repeat itself. So the expectations, of course, they were to make the postseason, but they were even higher than that. I think this blue Jay scene was talking about. We want to be World Series winners. We want to be World Series contenders. We want to win a hundred games. Then I should add, it was coming from the Clubhouse in the room. But if you looked at pre season picks from baseball experts in the media industry as a whole, a lot of people were picking the Blue Jays to be the favorites as well. And when I bumped into a member of the Yankees organization, I said, yes, what have you seen in the blue Jays? And he looked at me Riley said, oh, you mean the world champion? Because everybody's picking them because they look so great at the end of last season. So it wasn't just them in the room saying we can do it. It was everyone looking around the league and saying this Fuji team looks like it's going to be one of the best. When you look at those expectations, what were the main things that went wrong for this team during the first half of the season? Yeah, I think the main overarching thing for the Blue Jays this year has been a general lack of consistency and what I mean with that is a bit twofold and that they've had inconsistent periods with their offense, for example, in April and May, they got off to a really, really slow start offensively. And it was kind of mind boggling because you looked at this lineup and how many stacked hitters they had in this lineup and they just were not scoring at the rate that we thought they would score. And then finally they started to score, but then they had some struggles with their rotation and they had struggles with our bullpen and this kind of continued on until honestly it led up until that really terrible road trip they had on the West Coast where they went one in 6. They lost a serious to the Oakland a's, one of the worst teams in baseball. They were swept over four games by Seattle, which was a team that was chasing them for wild card spot. Simultaneous to this, they were also dealing with some really tragic circumstances, their first base coach, his daughter, died unexpectedly. So they were dealing with a lot of this stuff. Things were not going well. And eventually they came back to Toronto and the front office decided to fire Charlie Montoya. Their manager, who had been their manager since 2019. We do have some breaking news now on the Toronto blue Jays, the team has fired manager at Charlie montoyo. So Jamie, what more can you tell us about this? Well, I can tell you that 87 games into this baseball season, the Blue Jays have made a decision that a lot of fans had been hoping they would make in recent weeks. So the manager changes the first key piece of this turnaround that we want to look at. So Toronto had a winning record with Charlie Montoya this year, but they fired him anyway. And the guy who took over as manager is John Schneider, a former Blue Jays minor league catcher. How would you say his style is different than Montoya's and what kind of impact has he had on this Clubhouse? Yeah, he's definitely a different personality inventory on Montoya was more, I guess he was more of an introvert. So where's John Schneider? Is definitely more loose, definitely more of a big personality, very chatty, very

"I think they have sent him into batsman to the more gender neutral batter, but basically that was the issue. It was that replay review caught players who had both of their feet off the ground just in the course of regular running and according to a strict reading of the old rule when both feet lost contact with the ground, you're considered to be quote unquote out of your ground and you could be put out. And so they just deleted the provided that the batter has continued movement in the same direction clause. And there is something with a bouncing bat. Also a quarter Larry there, and it's the same sort of situation. So they address that. They fix that some years ago and I think we could do the same here and really I'm sort of surprised that it hasn't happened yet. Yeah, it just seems like it's such an easy thing to make everyone's life better, particularly at a moment where we are obsessed with time of gain. Why not a limp just eliminated an entire category of review that makes everyone annoyed? Yeah. That's a good point too. Yeah. All right. Thank you. Well, since we have covered the pressing hot button topics on this podcast of Taylor ward's name being screwed up or other players being mistaken for Taylor word, that has to lead the show, obviously. And then a broadcaster correcting another broadcaster about zombie runner. Yeah. You know, that's your number two story for the day. Yeah. And then in the C block of your show, you gotta go with the fruitless hidden ball trick attempt that not even the broadcasters calling the game noticed. But we should probably get to some subjects that are used elsewhere in the world. Maybe we can start with the Blue Jays because that will segue naturally into the royals. Look at you telegraphing. You've played out a road for us to follow. Yeah, I've broken this episode like a TV writer breaking an episode. I've got all the index cards up on my cork board, and I'm just shifting them around. Which should come first, so we could segue from this topic to that topic. Yeah, and then we're gonna open a hatch and then. So the Blue Jays fired their manager, Charlie montoyo, which I think took people by some surprise. We talked recently about the blue chase having a disappointing season thus far and the fact that they were only a couple games ahead of the Orioles, which is not a great reflection on them, but they are still a winning team. They are still in playoff position or just about right. They still are, I think. I think they store. Yeah, and if you look at the previous managers who had been fired this year. So with the Phillies, let go of Joe Girardi and the angels that go of Joe Maddon, like they have lost a ton of playoff probability this season. Whereas the Blue Jays have not. Now, what the Blue Jays have lost is division. Yeah. They've lost a lot of that hidden effect. They've lost more of that than any other team, I believe. So they are down 43 percentage points. Now, that's partly because they have been disappointing. It's mostly because the Yankees have been surpassed all expectations. So, yeah. Ben, Ben, did you know? We're recording this on Thursday at one 34 p.m. my time. And you are correct to say that the Blue Jays are still in playoff position. The Blue Jays, the Mariners, and Boston, are all sitting sitting tied together amongst the wildcards. After Tampa so, you know, they are still Yankees are 62 and 26. 7 O 5. That's pretty good. Yeah. Some of the streets include Lee highway, confederate lane and plantation Parkway, most of the streets are in the Mosby Woods neighborhood, which is named after confederate army battalion commander John Mosby. Cool cool yeah. I'm sure liam liam liam does a great job in when these people pass away who were local heroes lee. Mcguire write at length about them. You know you get a good insight. So yup all right so Yeah don't wanna leave on to saturno. Does a couple of the sad bits of hockey news but as we head out the door today. James have you any levity for us here in your final thoughts. I was reading a headline Did you see this. The whole story in front of me patrick. Mahomes mother is weighing in on rule. Changes yourself doing the. Nfl headline is pat. Mom's mom an nfl stat. But do they're always gonna wanna take back stevie they're always gonna wanna take. It just never goes away. You think this yeah ever my. My favorite is It was it was a player wife who tried to intervene on things. And this is another lifetime ago. When i was the ottawa. Lynx play by play announcer and blue jays manager. Charlie montoyo was an infielder for the ottawa. Lynx and at one point as a ground ball to charlie montale and he kind of boots it for a second but throws it too. I and it's just not in time. And i guess they decided to given error even though it was a hard roll. Wasn't it wasn't an easy one but it was hard hit ball and his wife took a bit of issue with. I think the scores name was randy fix. Do you think so. Yeah i do anyway. He will. He scored an error and it was not long before charlie. Montoya's wife stormed the press box to give randy in media members. She thought everybody who's responsible for this..

"This year in terms of Just escaping it with one run from the run second base. He did his job. And then of course in the eleven kirby snead comes in he gives up two earned runs and that was pretty much the end of it from there. So i mean it's it's unfortunate because when you look at it again especially the friday game that i got to witness as well seeing someone like robbie ray who's leading the american league now in era pitch like he did eight innings five hits one earned eleven strikeouts. It just wasting an outing like that it. Just it doesn't make sense wasting outing like that. And it's funny to at the game. You knew he was going eight innings. In terms of his pitch count county was low. He could have done it. We know that there's only really one reliever on this team that jas can trust and that stored romano and that's exactly what happened. And he came in right after robbery but unfortunately the game was tied and they had to go to trevor richards in extra innings. And that's how the it imploded from there. So i mean that's it's the story of the way the season's gone you have one reliever you can trust the deeper. You go and games like this. Which is why the record so bad. they're gonna lose because of how are the lack of depth this bullpen has. They're missing a lot of guys. There's a lotta guys. They need someone like walking. Sorry i who. They traded for nate pearson. They need ross. Stripling i believe is on his way back as a reliever. Do so many guys that you're missing and that's what happens. And i don't know how you you blame charlie toyo as well for the offense going one for thirty one in three days with runners in scoring position so as much as Mistake on friday. Maybe cost of the team or you can maybe point fingers at charlie one toyo. What about earlier in the game when they left for seven runners on base and then of course in the game on sunday when you leave fourteen runners on base so many situations are so many opportunities before they got to that point. The jason execute. And that's why. I don't blame charlie over this weekend. I blame the offense and it's a simple in terms of the numbers of why they lost two to three tigers this weekend. Yeah and these are just like bad numbers for the blue jays. Going one for thirty one over a weekend series. Those are numbers that we haven't seen in major league baseball for a couple of years. The last time a team went had one or fewer hits with thirty plus at bats with runners scoring position in a series was july nineteenth to twenty first twenty nineteen. It was the tigers who did that against the bluejays in july twenty nineteen..

"To bunt now. Let let me get this straight. Alejandro kirk knows how to bunt. I mean the blue jays stare Statistically or not very good with bunce but you have a guy at the plate who is it a. He's a major league hitter. He knows what to do. I don't understand why you pinch hit. Now you lose your catcher. That's something you've got also remember you pinch it for your catcher. I'm not saying recently is a bad catcher. But if you don't have to lose your catcher and now you only have one. You don't even have one on the bench so worst case something happens mcguire night. You got something to deal with that. That's a big problem but to intentionally to take the battle of a good hitters hand to bunt for him just makes absolutely zero sense to me. And i think he was even more concerning because breivik flora did bunt with two strikes now it was a successful bunt. But how i mean we would. How is this allowed. I think is is my biggest question because we saw it in the first half of the season maybe when they were still indonesian. but i think it was santiago. Sprawl was told to bunt with two strikes and he bunted. Foul bluejays lost her opportunity. And i really don't understand where the logic in bunting with two strikes is because you want foul on your l. boba shed. He can foul off a hundred pitches in a row and he still has to strikes whereas you bunt one pitch foul and not even like the the odds of probably hitting it fair are pretty low or whatever did you do that and opportunities out and it that was i think very concerning. Move for me i. I don't understand why you bunt with two strikes. I think a little bit more concerned about but even probably to a similar extent taking the battle to somebody's hand in order to bunted. It doesn't make sense to me. I'd rather keep guys in the lineup. If they don't have to leave. And i'm not seeing breivik flare couldn't have come in or wouldn't have been a good option maybe in the tenth or whatever if bluejays needed him. But i don't see the logically you have so at that point in the game..

"Able to continue this. I don't know how you move him down to the order. Because i mean springer likely is your your leadoff hitter maybe your second hitter but then you move in guerrero down. I don't know if that's the most likely case. But i think he keep simeon in the leadoff spot. Even when springer comes back and he's just he's been crazy. Opiates almost out of thousand. I mean like you said mark that this is just. It's it's amazing. And i don't know how i don't know how we did it honestly like especially you know. He started off pretty slow hitting under two hundred for for quite a while but yeah. It's fantastic what he's doing and him and tasker hernandez to i think there was a stat that just came out. He has hit forty four home runs in his last one hundred and sixty two games combined so lot of bright spots in this lineup and honestly if if those things that we talked about earlier are starting to fix themselves in. You're starting to see better. Managing better pitching. This team easily could win the world series. And that's why it's just. It's so frustrating. Seeing them lose a game that they should win because they have the guys that really could take and simians one of them especially considering these gypsies on a one year deal. He's out to prove himself especially after a bit of a down year last year. But i'm excited to see what he's able to do for the month of june and if he's able to at least maybe hit two seventy to eighty something like that then. I would consider that a fantastic first half of the season. Yeah and jacob. I give you credit. You're still on board with that world series projection. So i give it to you. I do but yeah marcus. Semi what a month of may and really the only one on the active roster to when you look at it in the month of may to have an over eleven hundred. I mean. it's crazy. How good he played an average of three sixty eight and on base percentage of four twenty nine zero so this guy was doing pretty much everything and i just..

"Think it's it if it will happen. It'll happen in the offseason. Still don't think it's very likely at this point. This the rest of the season could pano and and basically confirmed that. He's getting fired but i think left is still. Give them a chance to defend himself. Yeah i don't know if my chances really go up. Since the last time we ask sites. I still think it's relatively low. I know they went. They exercise his team option for next year already in the spring. So obviously that doesn't really mean anything. They can still at the end of the firearm. I guess that doesn't really change anything. I think they're still committed to him and he still somewhat showing results he has. I mean he still optimistic guy said look. We're we're talking about one game. We took two to three from the yankees twitter. Three from cleveland. And we just focus on this last inning bottom. That's just costly. A lot of people are saying this team's record would be if not if some of the mistakes. He's made some decisions that are he's been criticized for so i don't look into it that much. I mean maybe there are few games better. I mean especially after yesterday. I still think yesterday was such a winnable game. And that's that ray serious to like just the overall definitely a few games. They may be could have had even before that in the boston series too. There's a lot of games they let slip away but a lot of people are wondering what the record would be and it's funny because he was trying obviously on twitter and a lot of people were also getting john gibbons trending. I'm sure you guys saw that too so very interesting. A lot of people saying they must be. But i feel like give you got a lot of hate to. When he was here so obviously. Everyone needs a scapegoat by. I just found that kind of ironic. Both of them are training at the same time. Yeah the grass is always greener on the other side of the whatever the saying is there's different endings to the saying. My favorite ending is the other side of the septic tank. But yeah it's always. It's always greener on the other side..

"Airmont dryer hanging out hanging out to dry because you cannot afford to lose games. And i keep saying that but that that's just how it is and go back. Maybe in at the end of the season in the blue are out of the playoffs by a game. or two you can look back and say well. What about these games. That were not taken as seriously as they should. And that's just it's mind boggling to me and especially to your point mark the fact that the bullpen has been not as overworked as it normally has been. They've only played the whatever. It is ending thirty five innings when they should have played like ten more or something like that like this bullpen has not pitched a lot in the last week. So all hands should be on deck and you should have the guys available even if you like. I know you mentioned dooley's romano. Even if one of them does want to go out a second time. I would let them. But charlie's obviously not going to do that but the fact that nobody was warming up is it makes me angrier than if somebody was warming up because okay say anthony. Castro comes in two batters before and he allows two earned runs in the blue jays. End up losing okay fair enough then whatever but the fact that nobody was warming up and that somebody then had to come into an absolute mess of a situation it just it makes me very angry and that's just the way that this was handled it. Just i've been defending charlie montoya for quite a while. But i cannot defend this. And i understand. Why the pitchforks were adam. And he was angry in that interview people. I think it was Whoever it was. I don't remember talking my head whoever's voice it was that asked him the question. He was angry about that. He knows that the the heat's on him and he's got a defendant. I really don't know how. Defend it other than by going in managing your butt off in the month of june because you gotta come back from a terrible month after that. That's just that's not excusable. And that's not excusable for any team but especially considering. You're supposed to make the playoffs that you can't have that happen. You can't throw games. You can't mismanaged this. Many games going back to last season there were so many instances of this should have been done differently in. Yes i understand. Hindsight is twenty twenty and you can say of course like this should have been done differently but you gotta learn from your mistakes. You can't just continuously say well. We're learned from that where i should have done that differently. Like bottom line is is try. One toy is mismanaging this game or mismanaged that game. Somebody should have been warming up. And i i can't. I can under- frustrated about a bad performance but i'm even more frustrated that a bad performance was let was prolonged. Basically that point you gotta read the game. You gotta take is out when they're not doing well..

"To episode one hundred twenty four section one thirty eight. I'm your host mark collie as always joined by our other hosts bryson and jacob. How're you guys well We got a lot to talk about today. But i'm i'm doing okay. You know very interested in a very excited record today for obvious reasons that will get into but overall doing okay jason. A road trip at four and two so it could have been worse but it was definitely a good step forward. It's going to be an action packed up. So i can already tell that yeah. They took two of three from the yankees. Then they take two of three from cleveland. Which charlie montoya seemed very proud of that fact they won. Eleven to two in a rain-soaked seven inning game. On friday off day on saturday with game being postponed and then sunday yesterday the doubleheader they take the first one four to one they lose the second one sixty five. And that's what we're going to be talking about mostly today jacob. How're you well. You listed all that. So i mean i'm not doing too well considering that little staff for people. Blue jays played five seven inning games in a row considering all the rainouts and whatnot. Which you know. It's kind of funny. They've played less innings. They should've which is good for the bullpen. But wasn't good enough. I guess but we'll we'll we'll get into that. The first team in major league history to play five consecutive senate. Seven games and the second team is going to be cleveland. Which i think is going to do it today. Because they have either double header today or tomorrow so today. It's it's a crazy time to be a baseball fan especially for the blue jays but yeah so just jumping right into it. Yesterday's game the blue jays. Al four zero going into the later innings. Bring in tyler chat would in the seventh. He walks bases loaded walks in iran to make it five to five. Finally charlie manteo brings an anthony castro to the bullpen. Castro does his job. He gets a sacked fly but that enza game walks it off for cleveland. There was no one warming in the bullpen. Before that charlie. Montayo couldn't have taken out tyler chitwood after he walked in after he walked three straight. Because there's no one warming in the bullpen. This move got. I think probably like the most criticism. I've ever seen against a blue jay manager in the time that i've been a fan. It's been pretty crazy. The amount of criticism that's been leveled onto montoyo. And he had a lot to say about it after the game. But i'll just play the clip from what he did say which is interesting. I'm sure there's gonna be a watch impact about it talking about just a one game two out of three from the yankees to other three from these guys and we're talking about one batting and you know what i'm saying. Yeah he could take him out all that stuff but he's one of our best relievers e you've got to trust somebody one time and let them get out of trouble but again it was a grotesque with the standing job to three hundred. Three doesn't get any better than that. Of course we could swept you. We got one more at one. Three more outs but didn't work out that way. So lots to pack their. What are your thoughts about this. The other people are lot. Lots of people are critical of the other moves. Montayo made removing stripling from the game early using upper fao. Jordan raimondo. in the first game. Personally i only blamed montevideo for the decision not to warm anyone up in the bullpen in that seventh inning. With toddler chat on the mound. That's where i stand..

"Offer that. Of course the only thing you can pick out which was the The bunt from santiago spinelli. You guys were talking about even though again. i'll say it again. I don't disagree with the decision for him to try it until it got the two strikes. I think from two strikes i just feel like he was just pretty much wasting the out and clearly espinel didn't seem comfortable bunting to begin with. Why continue to do that. And take the risk of being fouled out which happened. There's another problem where i was. I just don't understand it. And then of course throughout the weekend you know. I don't really know how much he can do. In terms of the game on the. I'm not even gonna talk about saturday. Saturday was three to one. And it just gonna get going offensively. And they didn't really have that chance like they did on sunday and monday from yesterday. So on the sunday game when they gave up or pretty much tampa but four runs up in the ninth i. I don't understand what he could have done differently with. The depletable penn who's injured yearly went through delete the before which is fine chat with bergen. Didn't settle for the save at all and we know what happened from that. So that's an workout. And i don't i don't know like do you want to put on a glove start pitching like i don't understand how you blame him for that with the bullpen. That's being overworked every day. And then the only thing i'll pick from yesterday again agree or disagree. Is that the opener strategy. I just think it's an overlooked and thought strategy where it doesn't work out and you're taking chances and really when you look at it now. There's so many times where you look at it and say okay. Well i'm paper the match. Look good bodmer the order this bottom of the order that less time through the rotation. This are less at bats against these guys. Ross stripling is the bulk man. This and that every time it feels like we're they've done that situation this year it turns out to be the worst case scenario. I don't know if it's bad luck. I don't know if it's him misjudging things but clearly it's not working. It's not. I mean when you look away from and go back our conversation. Last week it didn't work in terms of this scenario bringing dolly's For the bottom of the order and then yesterday were discreet and obviously argue disagree with me. Is that it's just. It's just an over thought thing. And i don't understand the point of it. I mean when i know on paper you're looking at this and that where you're like okay. It looks good if everything works out. But nothing's worked out when you say that every time this happens it turns out to go the worst way possible and i don't know why and maybe it all is a stretch of maybe i'm overreacting and stretch by luck. It could be an if it is. It's really bad luck because it just feels like we've been through this time and time again and it could have easily been avoided if you just start ross. Struggling and again. What trent thornton. You mentioned how good he has been under the bullpen..

"Earned runs five strikeouts and a walk. I know it's very specific. But i'm thinking he's gonna he's gonna make a pretty decent appearance in his. You're good solid this yankees lineup. To spark thing. I was going to say six innings. Two earned runs but now jacobs said that. Go okay. i'll say. I mean still say six innings. Oh because that's kind of what he's hovered around in aaa album. It down to one earned run just to be a little bit more cheerful. And then i guess in terms of hit. I'll go with five. Hits one walk also ten strikeouts. Okay yes see. I was thinking six. Thanks to all kind of the exact same thing. And i think it's one i'm going to you know you're not obviously going to predict them to get up but one or two runs. Maybe i'm going to say he's probably gonna be a little bit nervous so i wouldn't be surprised if he walks. Maybe two or three. And i do think you'll strike out at least seven to ten. I'm expecting a high strikeout rate from him as well. So it'll be exciting but Yeah too bad this short-lived elegant of sigma we had gone on thirty Coming to a close. I think a lot earlier than we all anticipated. Sadly my the theme music will no longer be able to use another segment. yeah Okay so we gotta talk about this weekend. We already kind of did it was probably. I hope fingers crossed the worst. This season is ever gonna get it. Certainly the worst. I think we've seen bluejays over the last two years. Twenty twenty twenty twenty one. You know you have that six game losing streak at the end of last season but it's nowhere near as brutal as a streak has been being heading game spin tithing games fighting your way back into games. And than just blowing it all the same in the last few innings out of the bullpen and not taking advantage of some chances on the base paths in extra innings. It's been really really rough..

"Joined by pricing and jacob. It's been a rough week. Our guys it's been has been the greatest week exactly. But i'm doing okay myself but it's been a very disappointing and frustrating week while watching this baseball team play for sure. They lost four in a row since last time we talked through now on a six game losing streak. They've lost four blown games in a row or excuse me five blown games in a row going back to the final game of the red sox series nine two seven extra innings loss on friday three to one loss. On saturday sunday they walk through with the bases loaded to lose six two four in the ninth inning. And then monday of course yesterday fourteen. Two eight loss in eleven innings. It's been pretty brutal. How are you jacob. Well considering that The team's losing. I'm also not doing well. I guess it could be worse. Maybe if i want to be a little bit optimistic but Nuts it's it's a rough rough time for blue jays fans right now myself included alleys. No one's getting injured now. I guess that's how could be worse. I mean the team is staying at the same level of health as they have been. It's just they aren't scoring and they are keeping the lead anyways Just fair warning to everyone listening. We're recording this podcast at eight. Am so if we say anything. That doesn't totally make sense. We'll blame it on that. We don't normally record this early I in life. I like to start with the bad news and go to the good news.
