"You do that, that's it. Can't go back and take back immunity because they say things you don't like. But people just mad at Manfred, but Manfred's job is for them to be is for the to be the guy, the fans get mad at. So they're not getting mad at Jerry reinsdorf and Charlie Mann. Well, be mad at Charlie Martin unfortunate for a thousand years. But they're not being that young. So, do I think he's a good commissioner? No. But I don't think there's such a thing anymore, is a good commissioner. Because the commissioner is just the owners representative. And I need to get back to actually calling him that. The fact that we created this job in 1920 one 20. And kind of had this whole mythology built up around the commissioner of baseball, we really got to get away from that in our reporting and call the commissioner what he is, the owners represent. Yeah, and you do see sometimes people advocating for that platonic ideal of a commissioner. We don't have to stay in New York. I'll take the job. Yeah, but you do hear people say, well, what we need is this like a baseball ombudsman basically. Just someone who is above the fray, right? And can just kind of come in and neutrally and coolly and objectively and dispassionately evaluate everything and then hand down their ruling or something. The last commission I tried to do that got fired. That was Faye Vincent 92. Where he overruled the realignment plan? Or is she trying to implement a realignment plan that actually had teams in the east in the east and in the west and the west crazy SOB? And he ended up getting railroaded. Seal actually was the guy of cashier. And again, please, folks read lords of the realm by John Kelly. I think it might be out of print, but it is essential for everything up until 1993. A lot of what I'm telling you is stuff that John hellier thought. But no, I've been, I don't know how you'll hear people talk about Theo Epstein for this job. And this job is well below Theo Epstein's pay grade. Like the UFC should run for president. I don't know. Fry cook on Venus or something. I don't actually know, but the UFC is wildly overqualified for this job. And the suggestions that you hear for this job tend to be people who I think would make things worse. Look, I know bob Costa has his fans. But Bob Costas would ruin baseball in less than time. It's really hard to find somebody who would be. Like, who do you think the players and owners could actually get agree? Can you name 5 people who the players and owners would actually agree on for this type of role? No. Right. Because who's going to represent both of them? Right. They have diametrically opposed interests in a lot of cases. And I also, the populist argument I don't realize, somebody has to represent the fans. No. When General Motors is negotiating with its labor unions, they're not thinking about the customers either. And there's no defense don't have a voice. The fans voice in this is you pay your money and your fix your chances. And the league and the game itself isn't good enough for the fans anymore. You vote with your wallet. What we've seen historically is the fans have always come back and this might be a good place to close on. I'm worried that we I've never I promise you, I've never been the baseball is dying guy. Literally, I've always said, look at the history. Baseball is fine. I don't know the baseball is dying. I think baseball is driving drunk right now. And I think there's some real risk involved. If you have this on top of 2000 because people don't take away from 2000. It was a pandemic, things happened. People took away from 2000. These idiots couldn't get it together. If we have another fractured season in 2022 on top of 2000, I really do think it'll be the first time in baseball history, baseball loses people. It can't get that. Well, and I wondered after the response to the pandemic, if that was maybe the first time that Manfred was potentially in hot water with the owners, either because they were frustrated that things took as long as they did or because he had missed sort of gauge what the resolve of the players were in that moment too, right? Like I think that that was a pretty galvanizing moment for a lot of the union membership in terms of what they were willing to take from ownership versus what they were willing to push back on. And I was pretty surprised and impressed with what solidarity and resolve they showed that year, because I was, you know, I wasn't particularly optimistic. And I think it was illuminating for a lot of those guys. This is who you're dealing with. And this is what matters to them. You know? My concern with the players is that they don't have they weren't going to be strong enough because none of them have been through this before. In 2002 a nasty. The owners and their media partners literally held September 11th over the players. That was an ugly fight. And it ended without a work salvage. And very free players even remember that anymore. There's leadership in the union, non playing leadership that still remembers O2 and 94 and even goes back as far as the 80s. But no players have that. And I didn't know what they could hold up and make. That I certainly underestimated 2020s effect. It sounds like you really saw that as a galvanizing moment. I know I underestimated it. And I think that the effect of 2020 is driving what we're seeing now. It was a big thing for the players. You mentioned Manfred. I don't think the owners were in position to cashier Manfred in the middle of a crisis, a year in advance of a labor challenge. There was just not enough time to go through that. I think a lot of people and I'm coming around to this too. Once we get an agreement, I think four months later, we'll see, you know, we're going to search for a new condition. I don't think Manfred is the commissioner in 2024. Well, that would be a hopeful note, I guess, although. But Dan halem becomes commissioner. Meet the new bus. Probably. But yeah, I was just going to mention, because you made the comp to General Motors a minute ago and pointed out well, maybe the fins don't get a direct seat at the table because it's a business on the other hand, you have made the case and have written recently that it's not just any business, right? And that is an argument that you hear from people. It's a business, and you've got to maximize your profits at all times and all of that. But that's the myth. I forgot to write down. Yes, okay. We'll go ahead then. There was a time in the middle of the century when there wasn't as much money in the game. And yeah, these guys did have to eke out a profit. They were just, they were rich relative to the population, till the players were doing well, but teams could lose money. No team ever went under, but certainly teams were closer to it than anything we've seen in our lifetime. But now, and I even go back and this was the conversation we never had. When I started doing this, everybody was operating much closer to the edge because there wasn't the central fund money that it was. Again, all team owners were generally rich. But a lot of them, their value was tied up in what the team made in a given year. We don't have that. Everybody who.

He's going to help them a lot in terms of making sure they have enough bullpen to get through this kind of a game but wild card games are really just a coin. Flip right anything can happen. A ball goes through someone's legs and it changes everything. So which side of the coin do you think is going to land face up the yankees or the red sox the yankees on this one. I think garrett cole is going to just outpitched cheval de and going to go with new york on this one well. The winner gets the tampa bay. Rays in when you go through the list of. Mvp cy young candidates. What you don't see. Is anyone really from tampa bay. So how does this team without a stanton without of lead junior without an aaron judge without a garrett cole how does this team absolutely run away with the division. Fatality do it. They do it because they don't rely on one guy down the lineup as you mentioned. They're not on that leaderboard. Maybe the top three to five. But you look beyond that you expand you look at the top. One hundred players tampa bay has got a ton of guys. They are a very well. Rounded team belts and cruise has been a great addition for them. He was a big trade deadline. Pickup to add a little to that lineup. Hi fly ball backhand on lamp. That ball's got a chance to carry out and it's gone homerun number thirty two for nelson cruz almost akin to the giants in that. They don't have that one star and so because they get contributions everywhere. They're almost more of a danger to teams right. It's not oh good. We got this one guy out right so you look at the raise and by a lot of measures. They're better than last year. Seem that went to the world series. Now there are some questions i think. Mostly the depth in that starting rotation. They lost tyler last now. A trader wave lake snell. They'll charlie martin a free agency so they're far and away the most bullpen dependent team but have does it matter because bullpens up this so good that i don't know if it ends up mattering for tampa bay because they're so good at those matchups but you look at this tampa bay team and very easily. I could see them again in the world series and again just totally flummoxed thing everybody every year who wants to know what is in the secret sauce in tampa bay. And how do we get it to our team. Well there are still two teams. We need to look at in the al. The first is the al central champs who also ran away with their division the white sox and the al west champs the houston astros. So let's start with the white sox. What's your biggest question when it comes to the chicago team to me. It's gotta be the health of starting pitcher. Carlos don because his velocity is down in his last outing. They're really worried about whether he's going to be able to be healthy. And be on the division series roster and when he's healthy he is one of the best pitchers in baseball after everything he's been through the at the older supreme he's really been a huge part of what the white sox have been able to do so i think his hell is just a very critical component. Especially when you look at facing a houston astros lineup. That is the best baseball will. They'll be playing the team that a number of baseball fans still haven't forgiven the al west champion houston astros. Seems like maybe we were a bit premature to cancel the astros in their top tier talent. This team led all of baseball and runs scored but as you roper. It there are questions about their bullpen heading into the playoffs. Can you tell us about that. There are and i think the astros are really really good team but when you look at this bullpen ryan presley seems to be their guy. He's their most legitimate guy that they can really go to now is that grantee is going to be in the bullpen. And he could potentially be an x factor for them. They've really struggled all year to kind of have that late inning relief but because their rotation is is fairly solid and their offense is really out of this world the weak point and the reason that could be eliminated early to me comes down to that bullpen. And what they do there. Because you look at this lineup. And you're right. We should not have cancelled them. They lead all baseball and runs scored in offensive war and wrc. Plus they've got carlos correa. They've got jose altuve. They've got michael brantley. They've just got this really good group of guys still that scores a lot of runs and then of course dusty baker seems to be just a beloved figure in baseball. I think the houston astros are kind of quietly lurking in the shadows here like nobody wants them to win outside of houston but i think they're a really good team and people need to recognize that will it finally. Most people had the Yankees and the raise the top that division and then a drop off and most people had Toronto waited above the Red Sox Red Sox slated as maybe the fourth place team. With the Orioles trailing everyone else. All we got that right? The Orioles at 25 a half games out behind the Red Sox, but the Red Sox have been the best team in the division and they've opened up a pretty good lead 4.5 games at the break. And I know we have a couple more games to go before we get to the All Star break. But we breach Fourth of July, and almost every team has played 81 games. The Red Sox are in pretty good position in pretty good stead. Be interesting to see how they handle the deadline. Everyone in baseball can always use more pitching, right? You can never have enough pitching because any given day somebody goes down. I yell stint before you know you got a big hole in your rotation. I think that's what they would be looking to do. The reason that the Brewers have got red hot. Getting Christian Yo, it's back. Also from simple significant injuries is part of it, too. But them seems to be the guy who's starting a drink. In Milwaukee. I get to the box in a minute. Toronto's above 500, so you can't count them out. They missed George Springer for a lengthy, uh, part of the early season and they're playing better baseball here in the month of July of June into July, Um so I give the Blue Jason outside chance. The most interesting team is the Yankees at 42 41. I got sucked in. I looked at all the big names on their roster and the fact that it looked right past the fact that their roster didn't really fit. They are woefully top handed. Everybody tries to get their rotation in its spot where they bring nothing but right handed pitching into a series against the Yankees. And it's worked. Brett Gardner is the only left handed bat the Yankees happened. Brett Gardner isn't the player that used to be He's having his own struggles. Brian Cashman has not done a great job putting that roster together this year, even though their own house, Steinbrenner came out this week and said He's not blaming Brian Catchment or Aaron Boone. We need one of those guys. Despite the you and cried by Yankee fans and some of the members of the media in New York. The owner doesn't put the blame on them. He's putting more on the players and he did come out and say if we come to the decision is an organization that were in it and we got a shot. And we can upgrade the team by making a deal at the trade deadline, one that is going to add additional salary to the team put them above the luxury tax because they're just below it right now. He would go ahead and do that, because he thinks this is an important year for the Yankees to make a playoff front. You only do that if you can legitimately make the argument That you can make the postseason A couple years ago, Brian Cashman did something that no one thought would ever happen. He was a seller at the trade deadline. He traded off Miller there stud setup reliever. He traded off so overall this captain, they're closer, and the Yankees basically admitted. We're not going to make the playoffs here. They got some pretty good returns. For both of those two plays players. Clint Frazier, who was a young up and coming prospect has really flattened out this year. He's on the injured list right now, but has had a pretty mediocre season. And Glaber Torres.
