In this week's AP Religion Minute, a pioneer of Gospel music is rediscovered
"I'm Walter ratliff with the religion minute. For more than two decades, the work of gospel music composer, Charles Henry pace, sat silent and 14 unorganized crates. I knew we had this gospel collection, but nobody had ever really looked into it. Christopher lynch is a musicologist at the center for American music at the university of Pittsburgh. We had about 140 pieces of music that didn't exist in any other library in the world. Lynch and his team discovered that pace was an early pioneer of gospel music. Herbert Jones, the founder of the heritage gospel corral, says bases archives helped secure Pittsburgh special place in music history. Pittsburgh was a stop over point for jazz musicians and from blues musicians back in the 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s. So this is another niche in the history of Pittsburgh and the music field. Chad nationalizes assets by oil giant Exxon, says government
"Chad's government says its nationalizing all assets for multinational oil giant ExxonMobil, including hydrocarbon and exploration permits. The nationalization of a private company means that all assets are now owned by the government, energy experts say, while this used to happen in the 1960s and 70s, it hasn't happened in a long time, and doesn't conform to the legalities of the sector. Chad began producing oil in 2003 and Exxon has been operating in the country for several decades. It was running the dobo oil project in Chad, of which it owned a 40% stake analysts say the move could scare away investors from West Africa at a time of growing global energy demand and a decline in foreign investments in the African region. Barefoot tours of Westminster Abbey offered after coronation
"Visitors to London's Westminster Abbey will be allowed to stand for the first time on the exact spot where King Charles the third will be crowned, though they'll need to make sure they don't have holes in their socks for the shooter's tour meant to protect the Abbey's medieval mosaic floor. Abby officials say the section of the church's floor, known as the cosmati pavement, where the coronation chair has been placed for some 700 years, will be on display during Charles's crowning ceremony, Vanessa Simeone, head conservator at Westminster Abbey, says it will be a unique visitor experience. It's such a rare opportunity. Nobody apart from the clergy go up to this space. The intricate and mosaic of marble stone glass and metal located in front of the Abbey's high altar was commissioned by Henry the third in the 1200s, and made by Italian craftsmen, it's said to be the best surviving example outside Italy of cosmati after the Italian family which created it. Charles Thorngren Predicted This Banking Crisis Last November
"Today none other than the gentleman who told me back in November, Trish, this is going to be as bad as 2008. It's going to be some kind of banking crisis different, but something major well, I guess he got that one, right? Charles Thornton, welcome back to the program. What do you know, here we are, Charles Thornton, reading the tea leaves pretty well on that one. Good to have you back. Oh, it's great to be back. And I apologize for being right. We have to remember, this is very much like 2007, 2008, but worse. If we have runaway inflation, and unfortunately, and I know I said in the past, but we still have two years to go, folks. Cost. How much do things cost? No, we're going to whip it. And the budget plan is insane. And it would be a disaster fortunately. I don't think it would ever go through, but it gives you some insight into how this administration thinks. I'm troubled by the reality that even regardless of who's there, Charles, we've gotten ourselves so far in the hole that there's no easy solution out right now. It is like massive debt and deficits for decades to come, which is going to do exactly what you just said, a road, the purchasing power of the U.S. dollar. It's also goes back to, can we default? Gosh, I hope not. You have part of the institution refusing to accept financial responsibility. So at what point does the other side say, no, we're going to force you to have to accept it. And there's where that conversation of some default comes in. Maybe not all default, but maybe there's certain items that are willing to let go into default. But we can't afford that. The last time we had a really bad budget battle, the United States got downgraded. You know, our credit rating got downgraded. We haven't read that up yet.

Revision Path

"Of forge their own path? Yeah, I would say, I say, do your homework. And when I say that, I mean, it's great to go out with passion and present it, but you have to have a plan. And that could be, you know, do you want to be a generalist or you want to, this could be applied to a couple of different media, of course. But yeah, do I want to be a specialist and I want to be a generalist. I'm going back and forth between that as well. For me, it's about being also diversifying. I don't just solely rely on photography or I don't just solely rely on consulting or design or filmmaking. It's about building a brand based on those three words. Like I said, style creativity and soul and thinking about how you want your clients to feel when they work with you and after they're done working with you and will that make them want to work with you again. So it's like a lot of soft skill stuff. I mean, yeah, of course, being technically skilled and talented, those are all great things. But if people don't like you, you're not going to go far far. Learning how to maintain or establish and maintain relationships with people who align with the vision that you want to sell your artwork to present your work to and being able to manage that and navigate that and be in spaces and present yourself well. I think that's really important. And then also, of course, the more technical stuff about managing the business, you know, establishing an LLC, your contracts, delivering over delivering at times, under promising, you know, versus a device that basically because people will call you on. You said you were going to get 30 pictures. You don't need to deliver 29. It's like, oh, okay. Gotcha. But if I say I'm delivering 15 and I deliver 30, guess what, now I'm a rockstar, you know? And a lot of creatives, you know, take that for granted. And I also understand that this time and money involved with creating and running a business. So be mindful of that. Don't kill yourself. Rest. Take your time to step away from it. And reevaluate reassess, learn, and then ask for mentorship from people who are already doing it that are in a game. Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years? What kind of work do you want to be doing? Future stuff or continuation of what you're currently on. Where do you see yourself? Yeah, ultimately, in your 5 years, it's funny because I've been actually writing out my chain your plan and in the next 5 years, a couple of things. I definitely want to have a new physical space to run a shop and have a team. A dedicated team on payroll. So where I can manage and be creative or principle for projects that are being done by people that are working for me. But also, yeah, I have a really, I have a big passion for veterans affairs. So I've been researching ways that I can somehow participate in helping veterans. The advanced transitioning or trying to find their way out in the workforce at the China start of business, there are so many benefits out there available to a betterment to they don't know they're there and they're just out here flapping and trying to work but also might have some disabilities or issues that their workplace will workplaces are required to accommodate, right? So yeah, that's a huge passion of mine. Honestly, being helping veterans, especially better as a color transition and live good lives after kind of lived some potentially really lift them some really potentially horrible situations because of war. Yeah. But yeah, having a shopping, helping veterans. Well, just to kind of wrap things up here, where can our audience find out more information about you, your work and everything, where can they find that online? Sure. Yeah, so my main website is Chris Charles dot co that's Chris Charles dot CO, not dot com. The person who owns that domain name uses to give it up. I'm stuck with the dot co. And that's no problem. I'm like, what? I'm looking at a photograph and design I did, and president Obama saw that word. I mean, it's cool. Can you give me a sneak peek on whether or not they have a new album coming out? I'm someone to see. Okay, all right. We did. You mentioned a photo shoot. I thought I would ask. I feel like I have stay tuned. Yeah, and you know, we're talking about foreign exchange and fancy too, but nikolay is super talented as a producer. I have some of his solo albums too. Like one of them, I think I forget what it's called. Something with Shibuya in it. I'm not remembering. No, no, no. The city lights, city lights volume two. Yeah. Oh man, that's one of my favorite favorite just like chill out albums. One of the slides on there is, I forget that I had to go back and remember that, 'cause I know the song when I hear it, I can't necessarily think of the name of it, but it's like some song. I forget it's like, I don't call it like my getting home from the club song. When you get home, super late and the son's about to rise. It's like that kind of song. I forget the name of it, but they're all super talented. That whole click is super talented. Yeah, and super nice. I mean, whenever I get to catch up with nikolay, I mean, just guys really, really smart. There's a degree in musicology. You know, he's not just like self taught. He's really formally trained, but also humble. And tall, so that's like 70. He's about 6 foot 7. He's huge. But just the nicest guy. Same thing with fontaine. Yes, I did the graphics for that one as well. Nice. I've been lucky man. What do you do to kind of stay motivated and productive with your work? I'm just constantly evolving actually as far as what I do. For me, you know, sometimes it's just from editing photos. I run into like a creative block with where to go with a certain edit. I'll put it down and I'll step away and indulge in other media via a short film or looking at some art books that I have, but I know from me saying inspire people around kind of exploring the balance between what's in my head and what I see that catches my eye out in the world. And also music, you know, a lot of my photography and design, I mean, I feel it's so connected to musical energy and at least to me I always like to think of a song whenever I present a certain edit or if I do a print so for me, sometimes I'll be inspired by music or if I'm producing music and coming up with a theme and a rhythm and I'll start to see colors and I'll start this. I mean some people don't want to learn other people's jobs but i mean that's how i excelled in the military at a faster rate than every other soldiers because i wanted to know what the radio radio operator was doing when i was just a rifleman i wanted to know what The computer guy was doing. I would know the driver's doing because it's like they know something. I don't know and i want that information. So that makes me a knowledge expert than now people want me because like oh for no some shit like we need him here. That's true to a level okay. But at some point you no longer need to be the smartest person in the room. You need to know how to hire the smartest person in the room began. Can't do everything when you start out. You are all the hats. You're responsible for everything. The moment you start hiring people you start handing off hats and delegating responsibility. Yes okay. lieutenant doesn't need to be the mess. Best map reader in the company the company. He just needs to know who is okay. He doesn't need to be the most accurate rifle he just needs to know. Who was sniper is okay. He doesn't necessarily know how to how how to build on the radio from scratch. He needs not operated or how to give orders the radio operator to effectively. Communicate is needs to combat control. So a lot of this is delegation in business and it is in the military As you've got to be a sergeant you had people clean the heads you had mess. Mess people You had other people that you delegate responsibilities to and expected them to be able to complete them effectively now. It's nice to know their job. But at some point in time as you get bigger you can't know at all we've changed Software here a few years ago and my staff doesn't let me run payrolls anymore. I know the payroll law and i. "Was in front of him at all was by the use of a little paris coke now he figured that much of a problem since you know the ocean kind of all looks the same. It's probably blew out there but it landing a lot trick. Yeah would chuck did you. Just fire torpedo. At my way. I think like the view is the reason to have visibility. Like it's not all that attractive looking anyway. Nobody would fly into newer other now so it all his splint would take about thirty three and a half hours and by all accounts. The most harrowing part was the takeoff so even with every spare gram of weight. Shed the overloaded plane barely managed to get airborne before it ran out of runway and it only a few telephone wires at the end of the runway. A couple of feet. When did we invent their runway technology called longer that later than we invented the technology of not putting elevated wires at the fucking phone at that point them off assists nine guys all right so but but also so a long way. There are a couple of opportunities for official outpost to see him and that was because he had no radio. That was the only way anybody knew anything about his progress And there's not a lot of airplanes in the sky so it's pretty obvious which one is his He was cited in newfoundland right schedule and then again just south of ireland so by the time he's getting close to paris news already spreading that somebody's about to claim the or take prize and for whatever reason parisians got super excited about that idea so they all hauled asked to the airport degree and when he got there so around ten pm local time. Lindbergh may paris. But he doesn't know exactly where the airport is. It's not marked on the map and well. He's got a pretty good idea where it should be a what he sees on. The ground doesn't match up with what is expecting to see the invading grenada. Just put that on the right down the landing spot like one of two things you would have on with an axe there so okay. So here's the airstrips. At the time were like. They weren't part of gigantic airport complex. That's a little dirt strip a little ways out of town and it has just enough light. Shed over it to make visible from the sky at night but the area that he's expecting to find an airport in was lit up like daylight was huge streams alight spanning out in every direction turns out that is the airstrip and the huge trim. Alight are the headlights of the biggest traffic jam in world. History to that point from where everybody in the damn country was trying to get to the strip in time to see lindbergh land. He lands on the car the front of the line. What did i tell you. S seat in the house right all right so once you confirms he's in the right place at ten twenty two pm on may twenty first. He brings the spirit of st louis in for landing and because people don't really like get aeroplanes quite yet. But a hundred and fifty thousand adoring bands rushed onto the runway. Him while he's still landing remember. He's got one periscopes worth of disability. County actually used that thing. It was kind of useless. So he didn't bother with it so the fact that he didn't mow anybody down with the propeller in his landing is apparently just a bit of a coincidence. He's yeah the guy up there at the twenty five thousand dollars. The body have to stay at seven. No sooner the plane. Come to a halt then the mob of adoring fans polls the motherfucker out of the cockpit. Carry them towards the hangar. The damaged shit out of his plane to solve some by accident others deliberate attempts to snatch a bit of fabric off of it as a souvenir. Okay lots of urine. On all that kim covered in urine right now so not sure where the wiki authors felt the need to point this out by the way but among the group that greeted lindbergh. Were to future prime minister of india. Joa her lal narrow and his daughter indira gandhi. Okay so yeah right fun back all right. So lindbergh instantly became obscenely famous. According according to the new york times front page article at the time people were quote behaving us to lindbergh had walked on water not flown over it and quote kind of i gotta say a little so that was so much pitcher back then so by the following day. His mother's house in detroit was surrounded by a crowd of more than a thousand people so that same day. The french foreign office blew the american flag. Apparently that was the first time they'd ever salute. Somebody who wasn't a head of state on the east side of the atlantic was given the french legion owner by the french president. On the west side he was given the distinguished flying cross by the american congress. One up that passed a special act that allows limburg to be awarded the medal of honor for his hero. Achievement and time magazine made him the first ever man of the year actually at at age twenty five he remains the youngest person to ever receive that honor so for the rest of the year. Lindbergh toured around the us attending banquets and parades in his honor. According to the wicky between july twentieth and october twenty third of nineteen twenty seven he visited eighty two cities in forty eight states. That was all of them at the time who delivered a hundred seven speeches and erode one thousand two hundred ninety miles in parade. It's estimated that thirty million americans actually saw him in the flesh. During that period the entire population of the country at that time was one hundred. Nineteen million jesus over a quarter of the people and by all accounts he fucking hated every fucking second of it turned out. He despised being famous. He was nervous talking to women. He got super embarrassed when people ask how he peed while he was on his right and everybody asked how he peed when he was actually drink it straight back down through a tube. That was no fucking pete by self taught if he didn't want to be famous. Why the fuck did he do the flight then. Thirty three hours in a baby coffin and it was the only way you could think of to make twenty five grand. Okay fair question. Eli since charles. Lindbergh isn't around to ask. We just asked noah basically the same question about live shows. I'd say it was. It was during this tour that he met his future wife. And morrow who is apparently his financial advisers daughter one of the partners at j. p. morgan stupid fucking rich obviously so the the couple would ultimately have six children only one of which would be kidnapped and murdered. It was actually a pretty good average sees crisis but the tragic methodist twenty month old namesake rebate despises fame all the more so clearly moved around in europe for a while trying to find a place where nobody knew him but ultimately he found a way to get rid of all those adoring crowds even in his home country And that was publicly. Throwing in with the nazis now. We really need to emphasize just how hard it was to be too racist for main only illegal to teach kids about that in some states. Now or whatever. But america was only bigoted back. Then i mean compared to how big it is But lindbergh's public address for non-involvement in the second world war and an infamous radio address. That suggested that. Hitler might be onto something with this white people or the super duper better race. That was enough to turn the majority of americans against him even back that Places that had been renamed after him in nineteen twenty seven and there were quite a few suddenly remembered. Old names were. Nobody had parade general. Great yeah right right. And of course no throngs of adoring fans would ever greet him at another airstrip..

"Am like if the front matter was a guy right. Okay we're just southwest shit to the outdoor okay admiral the hype and the repeated weather delays the skype finally cleared for transatlantic flight on friday may twentieth nineteen twenty seven in the early morning hours. Charles lindbergh climbed the cockpit of his plane. The spirit of saint. Louis now probably seems like a weird name plane that was built in san diego and blown by a guy from detroit who grew up in minnesota but lindbergh lived in saint louis at the time in his financial backers to the extent that he had any from a racquet club in saint louis a part of the way. He convinced him to give him. Money was by appealing to their civic. Pride about like you know. How good would it be for. The city of every news story about this accomplishment. Had the words saint louis in them. It's crazy the plane flew. Because i always thought the spirit of saint louis was broken and meanwhile he and i are confused but just happily fundraising at the rec club. Season is so fucking so okay. speaking of which. Unless you've actually seen a picture of this plane up-close whatever you're imagining is more substantial than the actual plane. Okay so the spirit of saint louis was a single engine monoplane meaning it had one set of wings instead of the more common at the time to And like pretty much all decisions made in this plans designed. The decision to go with. A monoplane was all about wait. Okay one set of wings his lighter than to for the same reason the plane was mostly made out of lightweight. Wood covered in fabric right. So if you imagine a box kite with a propeller on the front of it your frighteningly fucking close so into so actually so. They went to so much trouble keeping the weight down. That lindbergh famously trimmed the useless white borders off the maps that he was going to use Far more importantly he refused to take a radio since they were heavy unreliable and hard to use when flying. The focal radio do anyway sand out sure. Yeah give us a few years. We'll build the pride of saint louis and we'll send it right okay. You know what happens when you don't have a radio so two hundred years looking for amelia earhart. That's what achieve veteran. She was eaten by lob strategies. That's a real theory by the way is real mind. Chief stressing migrate. Grandmother has a bunch of sex with amelia. Earhart like a bump on my hanging. It out fun fact. That is so superfund fact racking. Amelia earhart. Just the dispirited. Saint louis custom played for this particular job by company out of california called ryan air which was apparently on the verge of bankruptcy when lindbergh. First contact the more things change. Yeah fun fact. Charleston had to buy two seats. Just like me. Yeah so different riot air but yeah and close fitting one who's reduce try. Though so and because he had trouble putting the money together it was built as a rush job so the manufacturer originally said it would take three months but lindburg said you know he only had to this resulted in a lot of design compromises so like they started with plane that ryanair already made and they just kind of beefed it up with longer wings struggle wheel stride speaker fuel tanks and shit but they didn't have time to redesign the tail assembly. Which meant and. I'm just going to quote the wicky here quote. This setup resulted in a negatively stable design that tended to randomly introduce unanticipated pitch yawn and bank elements and the quote and well as disputed. The story that i've always seen attached to. This is that when they told charles lindbergh about that he said no. That's a good thing. It's unexpected fidgeting of the plane will keep me away. i can stripe heats car long trips. This most people brag about the torque their truck or whatever but how much can your does your random also so it would be hard to overstate. How fucking nuts. It was that he was doing this shit solo. Okay so lindbergh figured whole extra guy. That's a lot of extra weight. Plus he'd be taking up space that could otherwise hold more fuel but it's not like he could put the fucking thing on autopilot here planes back then couldn't level themselves right so he couldn't take his hands off the stick any longer than you could take your hands off the wheel of your car so on top of all that it's not like they were like you know signs you can follow along the way here. He had to plot his course on the fly with that reckoning rightly so like. I've been going this direction for this long amount of windy. So i should be about here. While flying the puck and plane at night enough to spread the map out on his lap. Hold a flashlight in his mouth plot. The course with his hands and like hold the plane. Study by pinching. The control stick between his knees cool man but that's nothing though want saw a guy eat an entire bowl of fettuccini alfredo and a separate side salad with breadsticks. While driving a stick shift that guy was heath that was i was waiting to get credited. They're all learn something about promising. Someone endless anything. That's that sounds more like all of a sudden. Yeah so i also need to emphasize how small the cockpit still perfectly satisfying though. Let's not forget that the history was very very small the area he had offended to still. Here's three why thirty two inches deep fifty one inches high. We give dead people more space than that. When we bury them it would be like trying to fly across the atlantic and in coach. Actually talk to pick his seat without paying for it though so seat actually speaking what. They're weird quirk explain. It had no forward visibility. Seems like the direction the plane goes is. It's the most of the time when things are going to tell you what some unanticipated yaw now and again going for a windshield or anything he so he could see his instruments and what was out either window on the side so we had window technology further strides forward. There was a really good reason for it and putting of bill. They didn't have enough telephone books for him to sit on the fuel tank in front of it so that if he crashed he would definitely explode and that actually forced him to change the angle of the plane to get a takeoff. Want you weird shit there. But the end result of the the only way that he could see what.

"It's okay so you can go. I boarded with my baby right after. I fuck myself so everybody hates you cool and all right. I guess that drug dealer who's walking funny can go now know is here. Yeah yeah oh. I'm sorry. I didn't spend more money to be on the plane longer. Got a scoop by. Will you look disappointed about how jealous. Right noah what person place thing concept phenomenon or event are we gonna be talking about today. Charles lindbergh antastic. And would you like to make any announcements for the record about why he chose that topic and you'll recall. The last us i wrote was about henry ford which was kind of to read for me. So i i guess this is part of my bigoted assholes from the nineteen twenties series so not to be clear for big chunks of the sas gonna see late. Charles lindbergh is the hero. He's not he was a fucking nazi right. So we'll get to the doc- should eventually sorta tacking on the dan. But i i wanna make it clear upfront that nobody should get too attached to this guy. You don't get too. Attached is also incidentally heath's tinder bio not true. So flu was charles. Actually i want to start with who. He wasn't okay so charles. Lindbergh was not the first person to fly across the atlantic ocean from the american continent to europe. He wasn't the first person to do it. Non stop even that honor goes to john alcock. Arthur whitten brown who vanished at june of nineteen nineteen th. They flew from the easternmost point. They could get to a newfoundland to like a few inches into ireland nights. And i say to rather than they landed in because they're somewhat controlled crash into an irish bog doesn't really rise to the level of landing but they survived it. It was a fantastically daring accomplishment. And it got the whole world excited about the possibilities of aviation. There's a weird time skip in airplanes. Like like there's a time when everyone was like. I hear men can ride in an aeroplane for a full american. Our and then forty seconds. China was eighteen minutes late. Fucking hate flying billick all right now. One of the people who got really swept up at this new aviation craze was a guy named raymond or teak. He was a wealthy french-born hotel. You're in new york. And he saw a good opportunity for self promotion here so he announced a twenty five thousand dollar award for the burr successful nonstop flight between new york city and paris france. This somebody who did like multiples okay. So seaplanes woodland along the way several times and shit like that ole over the atlantic coast so not called this the orteig prize it. He said it would run for five years. And of course this is one thousand nine thousand nine like twenty five. Grand is a ton of money well over a quarter of a million dollars today but the trip alcock and brown had just barely pulled off. That's about nineteen hundred miles. A flight or tig was talking about would be damn near twice that thirty six hundred miles so when the offer expired five years later there had been no serious attempts to claim the prize. No of course in the intervening five years aviation technology had gotten a lot better so or take decided to renew the price for another five years and this time a bunch of contender started to step forward and die because flying thirty six hundred miles at a rickety lawnmower planned was still bat. Shit fucking crazy. So the i was a french. Flying ace named marin eighth funk and his airplane crashed on takeoff in september of nineteen twenty. Six distance wasn't really the issue there then was it was it was wayne but because of the distance so in april of nineteen twenty seven to american aviators named noel davis and Stanton wooster were killed while testing the plan. They were gonna use for the flight and a few weeks later. A couple of french war heroes. Charles nolan gasser and francois coli became the first people to actually make it part of than the end of the runway but they disappeared somewhere over the atlantic ocean. And were never. You would think that at this point or teague would withdraw the price and say oh shit. I didn't mean to get a bunch of people killed. But he knew there was no such thing as bad publicity so he kept promoting the hell outta okay. Well apparently this is legal. So i would like to announce my million dollar prize for any republican senator who can beat up ten cobra snakes with now so i it was starting to somebody might actually manage to claim this price and back much to the media chagrin. It actually look there might be a race c. or take never stipulated which way you had to go. You could go to new york new york to paris but the prevailing weather patterns on the planet kinda dictated the to start new york and go east. Otherwise you're gonna be fighting the win the whole time and there's no way you could carry enough fuel for that known. Gasser team actually ignored that and as soon as they did everybody who knew anything about aviation wrote them off But so the only place in new york with a runway long enough was an airstrip called roosevelt field long island. So that's where all the serious pilots were amassing and in may of nineteen twenty seven. Three planes were just waiting for favorable weather reports to take off all right so one of the contenders was already famous. Aviator named clarence chamberlain. Who flew in circles around long island along enough to set the world. Aviation endurance record. Yeah that is a record since beaten regularly by passengers on delta on a routine thursday trying to land a general and go to work. Even if you're going to new york city go to newark. Don't go to jail. Actually let eli pick you ought to so chamberlain's team was financed by a guy named charles levine. Who had very deep pockets but managed to piss off pretty much. Everybody who came into contact with them all of history. The second guy is a famous arctic explorer. richard byrd. Who either was the first man to ever fly over the north pole and did it in record time for base camp. That still to this day has never been bested or he lied about flying over the north pole and he actually took a much shorter flight. That just kind of went around the arctic ocean. A little bit of the third guy was some bulkin. Nobody asked barn. Stormer named charles lindbergh now. Lindbergh's stood out from the competitors in a couple of ways. He was the only one of the three that wasn't payments going into it He was also the only guy who didn't have some big money financier and the fact that he actually had a plane capable making this flight at all was bit of a miracle but most importantly in terms of actually flying across the atlantic. He was the only one without a team chamberlain and bird were bringing navigators along with them and also had a radio operator. Charles lindbergh was the only person even attempting to this shit by himself. Nobody knew much about lindbergh before he showed up at roosevelt field but the new york media did a pretty solid job blessed things out once he announced he was gone for the arctic price. Lindbergh was born in detroit in nineteen o two but he grew up in minnesota. He dropped out of college a few years earlier to pursue aviation but he didn't actually fit that sorta typical stereotype of daredevil pilot. Aided crazy aerial stunts with the best of them including insane shit like wing walking and stuff but when he was on the ground he was as clean cut in buttoned-down. Any fucking buddy. He didn't drink. He didn't smoke and by the age of twenty five. As narrows anybody can tell he'd never even been on a date in wondering doesn't care what happens to it right. Yeah exactly just like someone touch my penis. Maybe expect now. Of course this is nineteen twenty seven. Right in the middle of prohibition and the height of the temperance movements power so that made this teetotaler a really popular contender and a lot of newspaper buying households so obviously the media is selling this shit hard all the contenders were in the same place at the same time. They're just waiting for several days. A hard rain to clear up. It's been all a two week since last contenders die or since they called off the search parties and as near as anybody can tell as soon as the rain clears. All three of these guys are gonna take off in quick succession and then we'll have a race to paris but that is not what ended up happening. Oh okay i was definitely pick. I was picturing like mario kart so okay so it turns out that robert byrd really didn't want to do this shit at all okay. He was the fake guy to begin with. He was just soaking up the media. Adulation he's living it up in a as a famous dude and a well well-financed student new york city. He you know he was happy to just keep making excuses as long as he could get away with it around the time. The weather was clear actually. He set a date like a week later to officially chris his plane so he was not going to race. Anybody all right now so chamberlain was a bit more serious about giving this ago. But while they're making their last second tweaks and waiting for the storm to break charles levin shows up with contracts for him and his team and they are nowhere near what they'd been discussing up to that point so levinas drawn up these basically indentured servant contracts where he gets to keep every penny they ever make for speaking tour. Book sales appearances. Whatever and then he'll pay them a reasonable salary for a couple years and exchange was more. He's been promising a big chunk of money to the families. If the team doesn't make it right if their plane crashes like every other damn buddy who tries this. There's nothing about that in the contract. That levine shows up with e plus. He made them check their bags at the gate. You have the right amount of overhead bins for bags group four. What does that even meet me. That's greasy somehow. I didn't see that coming on this hour right so chamberlain and his navigator till levin that they're not going anywhere until he writes the contracts and makes them look like he said they'd look a he tells them they're fucking fired by different pilots abbott so chamberlain souza's ass and then a judge grounds the plane until they can sort out all their legal troubles and that means all taken together that when favorable weather reports finally show up on the night of may nineteenth. Charles.
