"You want a life like that? Has everything to do with the Bible says, with what you believe about God, may give you a quick example. Real quick. I found it very interesting that Charles Taylor Charles Taylor says about the fact that most people are practical deists today. And that is, they don't believe that they exist for God's benefit. They actually believe God made the world for our benefit. They don't believe they have to rely on obey God every minute. They believe God kind of gave us a life and he's there. And if I live a pretty good life, my life should go pretty well. Christian Smith, a sociologist who's really studied in detail, the religious beliefs of younger American adults says in particular, younger adults are practical deists, though they would never use the word because they most of them haven't heard the word. But he actually says, listen, he says, this is what the average younger adult believes, that most do believe there's a God. That he made this world, and now they do not believe they have to obey him every minute and rely on him every second for every detail of their life. No. But they do believe if they live a generally good life, it's up to God to give them a good life. And he calls them, he calls that, this is Christian Smith, calls the normal worldview of younger American adults. Moralistic therapeutic deism. There is a God, and he exists basically for my benefit. And if I live a pretty decent life, I don't live a villainous life. I deserve a good life. And both Charles Taylor and Christian Smith said, here's what's happened with the thinner view of God. People can't handle suffering.

"Philosopher Charles Taylor has a book kind of a massive tome when I'm blowing my way through it and it's going to be probably several weeks before I finish it. But in any event, the book is called a secular age. And I've been thinking as I read this book about what it means to live in a secular age. Now Taylor's argument, I think, is very simple. And in a way quite elegant. His argument is that until pretty recently, in some respects, you can say this is even within our lifetime. But perhaps it goes a little further back. But until fairly recently, the west was defined, not so much by Christianity as by Chris and dumb. And what is Crescent a mean, Christendom means that we're living in a society where the whole architecture of the society. The way it is set up, it's institutions, but also its norms and practices, society is inextricable. From Christianity. It's not just that the constitution as a Christian foundation, it's that Christianity is, you may say, baked into the warp and woof, the structure, the operations of the whole society. And this was true of European societies. It was also true of American society and something, for example, that tocqueville noticed. And what Charles Taylor argues, and I think this is by and large right, is that we no longer live in Christendom. Chris and has died. Now, it doesn't follow by any means that Christianity has died. But what Taylor is getting at is that it means something totally different to be a Christian now than it did, for example, for yours. I won't say mine because I grew up in India, the situation is different. But let's say for your great great grandparents and their forebears. So now we have a Christianity that is that no longer dominates the institutions of our society. On the contrary, some of us would point out that some institutions powerful institutions of society appear to be anti Christian, certainly removed from Christian foundations, don't accept Christian premises. Christian premises are no longer taken for granted. And even courts have read constitution, which might have had a Christian foundation, have sort of tried to sort of move away from that from that foundation. So now we're living in a society. So living in a secular society means that means that Christianity is now one option among others. People can see alternative ways of life and see those ways of life not only as worthwhile as contributing to human flourishing, but also as moral. In other words, they're embracing an idea of morality that seems detached from perhaps its original Christian foundation. Now, Taylor's point is that is that this has happened. It can be seen as a loss. In fact, Taylor admits and he describes in some detail. A lot of the great things that Christendom produced. I mean, it's only the tip of the iceberg, so to speak, to say that it produced the cathedral of Notre-Dame and the cathedral of Chartres. And the magnificent work of Michelangelo and marvelous Christian thinkers and philosophers and artists. So that was the great manifestation of Chris and dumb.

"So suddenly, and now I'm turning back to Charles Taylor, Charles Taylor says that now, for centuries, under the influence of Christianity, we judge a society not by how it treats its richest or most elite citizens, but how it treats the ordinary guy. How do we know a society is doing well as the common man has a pretty good life. In fact, that's kind of how I came to see America when I first got here. I'm like, look, every society benefits its wealthy class, the wealthy in some ways outside of America live even better. But in America, the ordinary man has a really good life. And that is a measure of the success of a society. So the point here is that Christianity creates new institutions and a new ethical and aesthetic and moral sensibility. In which it is no longer just the guy on the top, but the guy at the middle or even the guy in the bottom whose life and whose interests and whose values become paramount. What some of us would do just to be young again, the simple things like climbing stairs, getting in and out of bed, taking a walk, aren't always that simple, too many aches and pains, but you know what? I mean, obviously there's going to be gradations of that. We're not always completely turning it inward. But the degree to which you can get outside of yourself and make that inward pull towards your ego towards your insecurities towards your own continual recurring thoughts and get outside of yourself and put yourself into your work fully and engage with it as if it's something outside of you and to the degree that you're able to get outside of yourself and engage completely with other people as a reality that has nothing to do with you. They have their own reality, their own experience. You know, as you're able to do that with people and all sorts of situations, to me, that's the highest form of therapy that you can have. And so much of the dynamic that's taking over us in the 21st century is that inward turning is getting deeper and deeper and stronger and stronger that pull. And I talk about in my new book, which we make it to or not. I talk about how in the ancient world in the pagan world, if you will, the sense, the greatest feeling that a person have was to be possessed by something outside of them. That was what was kind of ecstasy. That was what religion was. That was what the divine was. It was being possessed by some force beyond you, whether that was love and Aphrodite, whether that was clear thinking and the theme and just to use Greek examples, et cetera. So back in those earlier years, people were much more vulnerable and are you familiar with the work the secular age by Charles Taylor, I'm actually not now. No. Oh, it's a fascinating book. It's really interesting. He kind of trying to show the roots of where we've evolved into a completely secular society. And the word he uses is permeability.
