For Air Force Leader, Making Video On Racism He's Faced Was 'The Right Thing To Do'

"General Lloyd Austin is confirmed as the next secretary of defense, He'll be the first African American to hold that position. His nomination comes as the U. S military, like much of the rest of the country is grappling with issues of race after the killing of George Floyd and the protests that followed. Which brings us to another general Charles Que Brown. Over the summer, he became the first African American to lead a branch of the U. S military. He is the chief of staff for the Air Force. As his confirmation hung in the balance. General Brown chose to speak out about George Floyd's death, even if it cost him his promotion. Here's an excerpt from that video message released in July when he was still Pacific Air Force's commander. Think about how awful I am with emotion, not just for George Floyd. But the many African Americans that have suffered the same fate as George Boyd. I'm thinking about protests in my country. Tis of thee sweet Land of liberty. Equality expressing Arctic exploration of independence and the Constitution that I've sworn my adult life to support the fan. Thinking about a history of racial issues in my own experiences that didn't always sing of liberty and equality. I asked General Brown why he needed to deliver that message. I talked to one of our sons. Who was he went to Washington Mercy in ST Louis s O. His freshman year was Ferguson. And so he experienced that. And then he lives here in Washington, D. C and he He called us and he was. He was kind of struggling. With Things were going on. And so, um He asked me in the conversation. Hey, Hey, Dad. What is specific Air force is going to say, and as a commander, Pacific Air forces That was kind of code to me of Dad. What are you going to say? So on Tuesday, when I confirmation didn't come through. I was committed, then that discordant and do the video. And so was my own personal experiences, but, you know, thinking about her two sons. And their experiences and so that actually was what got me to do it. Did you tell your superiors Uh, no. I felt like, you know. I got to a point where because of talking to my son. I thought it was the right thing to do. You are now the highest ranking African American in the U. S. Military. How do you use that position to make it So the younger version of yourself isn't the only one in the room. How do you Increase opportunities for air men and women of color. Rachel. I think it's about being a role model. It's about how I carry myself on a day to day basis so that those that They're more dinner to make can can look up and see somebody they want to aspire to be, like, ideally, so what actions will be necessary? I mean, it's one thing to be unexamined well to be a role model, and that's important. But what changes what policy changes do you think need to be made? I mean, is I understand that there was an inspector general report. Looking into how racism could affect promotions in the Air Force, and hundreds of thousands of our men and women were also surveyed about diversity issues. What actions do those results point to The data actually shows that you know there are areas where based on What career feels ERM and go into made either help or hurt their opportunity to rise to more senior ranks. And so it's how we pay attention to recruiting in placing Eman of diverse backgrounds and specific career feels It's also looking at someone requires. We have a career Phyllis to understand. Do they have some type of barrier that we have not paid attention to? Because that's the way it's always been. The other thing we were also looking to do is how do we work in closely managed those of a diverse background and what I mean by that is just really take a look at the opportunities to prepare them for those positions to consider them. For positions and not make it just the situation. We hope it all works out, but it takes purposeful leadership in engagement to ensure that we are actually bringing the best. For all over me. There are more than 12,000 active duty pilots in the Air Force, according to data compiled by McClatchy News Service on Lee. About a dozen of them are black women. Do you see that as a problem? Do you only aspire to what you've been exposed to? You know, sometimes we might self eliminate just because we don't think we're qualified. So one of the areas that we have an air force is looking at is how do we provide more exposure? To young African Americans. Women really across the board. That? Yes, you could do this. And here's what it takes to get there I often say is We all need to ask what we wanna be able to. The worst air force can do is tell, you know, but if you don't ask, we can't say yes. So we want to put those that want to be part of our air force in a position where we can say yes. Let me ask you about this current moment in our political history in this country, the transition between one administration and another is actually critical to the national security. Are you convinced that the current civilian leadership at the Pentagon is committed to a smooth and responsible transfer of power? I think we're all working to a smooth transition of power. Both civilian and military and the Our job is to maintain our national security. And no matter who which administration our community chief we have, and that's that's my job as a service chief is a joint chief, and our goal is to make sure that we don't have a Any type of security incident in a peaceful transition of power like we've found throughout our history. You have any concerns that there would be? I mean, is it going to plan right now? The transition from your perspective. E think are now securities and is in is Not being threat right now, but realize that also that We're always we don't we have one side of the boat and the other side of the voters are our adversaries, and that's something as a as a service season, 25 play close attention to what the other joint chiefs to ensure that We have a good sense of what's going on around the world as well. Let me ask about the man who could become The next secretary of defense, retired army General Lloyd Austin. I assume you've You've come across one another once or twice. What's he like? Is the leader. He's a strong leader. I think he's decisive. I I enjoyed working for him and he listens. Which I think is an important aspect as a leader, and he's willing to take input from those around him. If confirmed, General Austin will join you in making history this year by becoming the first African American to lead the Department of Defense. What will it mean to you and your serviceman to see him sworn into that job? I think for any one of a diverse black man. When you see someone who rises to a key position, you take a bit of pride in it. You appreciate it, and it also opens an opportunity that where you now think about your own career path, there's opportunities of the head. Chief of staff of the Air Force. She first developed the box in twenty eleven when she was taking a three D printing course at the university of Brighton after graduating. She designed several dozen prototypes. "You wanted to ask? Yeah. There's this show Sunday night's pretty popular I wanna know of Cording to the Vegas betting line. Who should I bet who's going to end up at the end of the season on the on the all important, most important of all thrones. Alexander. He's dead halt noise that now you just talked about game at somebody dies. Hold on. We're going to mission control jazz. Do we still Zander? Yeah. Hell exander there. You are there. You are. Hi, harrieta quiet about what I want to drop any game of thrones spoiler headed off a little bit is right. Who ends up on the iron throne. You could bet this in Vegas who do you know? Yes, everybody is going crazy with bats. And ideas and everything I would say here. Here's my thought. And this has been my thought about this since the past season since surpassed the books, basically that without you know, slagging off the show or anything it's headed into much more conventional narrative than it had for the first four or five isn't there several, and I think with definitely gonna see some guests. We're gonna see some fan favorite characters biting it by the end of the day. But ultimately, I think in some configuration, we're gonna see Jilin snow and star Gary in at the head leading everything, you know, probably be a little different. They'll probably end up. Melting the iron throne. You won't have a big sore throat anymore. So it'd be a new day for west rose. But that's my guess in terms of who ends at all. And just to be clear. This is the end of the line for game of thrones. There will be prequels and sequels. But for the show known as game of thrones this season is it right? That's correct premier is Sunday night at nine pm on HBO there, six episodes. They're gonna roll out the next five Sundays after that. Some of them are super long episodes. There's the longest episodes in the history show stretching almost to an hour and a half. But regardless you got six more weeks of the shadow, they will is a prequel that they're working on their heavily into shooting and developing at this point believe four other prequel scripts that are in various stages of development. But yeah game of thrones. John so is done dinner. Start area has done that's bad by mid bay. He my my favorite Sunday night show is billions it it gets better every week. The acting is spectacular and John Malkovich Illinois zone. John Malkovich has been doing a guest spot as a Russian mafioso. He is spectacular. Do you? Love were Bill. Aliens is headed. Well, is one of the shows that I don't necessarily get to watch because I have so heavily to game of thrones. But we have a bunch of people on staff who do love it. It's one of those shows that I think is just picked up tremendously in the past Caesar to kind of bubbling under the surface for a while. And I feel like as of last season it really hit a stride. As far as my writers have told me and they've really been killing it for the past two seasons. At least. And called a DVR. Now, you live in the future. Is game of thrones. The biggest most important show that HBO has ever had. Yeah. I is unequivocally sopranos. You know, in terms of the cultural landscape, there's so many different things than HBO that you can argue for. Yeah. Sex in the city or tales from the dark side. Maybe you could throw out a ton of shows like that ours. But game of thrones, they expect a billion people to be watching. We'll be watching do you think Shelley long left the show too early. Honestly, I think Clinton is going to. I hope so. Need we enforce the throat? Yep. What do you think of this show the perfect date? This is a Netflix movie. Right. It's not a show. It's more movie or what is it? Yeah. It's been recent spate of teen. Rom coms networks putting out debut on the service today stars Noah Centenario, who is the new hot heartthrob, you might know from to all the buzz before he was also on Sierra. Burgess is a loser on Netflix. Those kind of the the final one of a trilogy of those today or your aunt and a mentor watch it and said, it's really cute. It's fun. It's about a kid who a totally on sexual way starts selling his services as a date to take out girls. And he is the perfect day. So if you're looking for acute rom com to watch tonight you can perfect right now. Now also yesterday, I don't know if it's been showing on Netflix. But they showed a preview, you know, when you go to that home screen, and they're kind of they're showing you whatever their newest biggest movie is all right? So there's a film called the silence that Stanley Tucci have you seen this yet? Alex. I haven't again animated watching it. It is kind of very similar to a quiet place in the same ban as Bert box where they're monsters, and you have to be quiet to keep them away. I will say as a great cast. But she thought it was bad. Watch that. But just not a good movie, which is unfortunate everybody involved. There's such a rip off of Burbach. So what what's the next movie someone's gonna come out with the you have to keep your you have to put a clothes pin on your nose? Because if you smell the monsters they come to life. I wanted to have one where you can't taste Jerry cans. It looks to me it looks you mentioned quiet place. Now, this is interesting because Stanley Tucci is married to Emily blunt sister, and she was in place. So I wonder what they talk about when they're sitting down to a family meal. Still still the idea. We'll say in their defense book that is based on came out three years before a quiet place hawks. Oh, so does pre exist that but at the same time, it seems like this idea these sort of ideas were bumping around for awhile bird box the books also around for a while. So I think they're just all kind of came out at the same time, and the the silence is bad. But even who's good it would be compared to the previous movies because of the way they've ever released Bill, you, you're brilliant. And you don't even know I think we need to talk about if you could sit down and have dinner with any family that had to celebrities in it. Right. Who would it be right? That say Connie, John and Maury Povich that would be the right? That's the obvious answer. There's no question about it a surprise movie from Donald Glover and reenter, and that's called guava island. Yeah. We kinda they were working on something. But we didn't know what it is this surprise. It's just going to Trump at twelve. Oh, one AM Pacific tonight on prime video. It's going to be streaming for free, regardless of whether you have a prime video subscription or not until six pm at which point it'll be versus scribes only. But it starts Donald Glover riana teasha, right? It's him working with his Atlanta director hero. Mariah who? Also did. This is America the video that caused a huge reaction with the thriller set in Cuba and filmed in Cuba. That's all we know about it at this point. But Donald Glover has been on a roll with the mazing weird creative things. So yeah, definitely going to be one talented immensely talented. Donald glover. I also have to give you big credit. I talked about this the other day, and you weren't here for it. But I wanna do it with you here. I've been watching the show. I watched the whole run of the show afterlife. As did Steve Bertrand news guy, it's only six episodes. I can't think of a TV show or a movie that blends really really funny with really really sad. And poignant the way that afterlife. Does you talked it up to us? And I I was gonna watch an episode and see what I thought but went through all six episodes very quickly while what a great show time graduated and look good news for fans of the show is actually renewed it for a second season. We don't know when it's going to MIR, but I've definitely working on it right now. And thank you for again for turning me onto facts of life. Also. Harry resistant. He said, let's see what happens, but you watched it, and what you enjoyed it very much. Very you. Take the good you take the bed Alexander. Thank you so much for being here greatly appreciated.
