"That with a free bob and sheri app the other day morons in the news we were talking about how casual people are with what they wanna do in other words. There's a a turn in this country. Where a group of us. Just feel no matter what the rules are. We're going to do whatever we want. And we were talking about this one guy who was drag racing on a busy public street with slicks on the car no hood on the engine and doing ninety miles an hour and of course he gets arrested right. He gets arrested for doing that. I do what i wanna do. Because you know. I live in a free country and i we all want to live in a free country and get away with whatever we can get away with. I guess but there are. There are some small things that i think are so irritating and yet they're not illegal. I was. I looked to posts and one of them was of this guy and i e sitting in a waiting room to an office or maybe in A private waiting area in an airport and he's got his shoes off. He has his socks on. He has his feet on the coffee table in front of him. So no socks feet up on the table and he's of course looking at his laptop and like caffeine. Yes what you're in a public space. There's there's somebody's sitting right next to him. He takes his shoes. And there's this stinky feet up there on the on the coffee table and the other one was of A young woman. Who's in an airport and it's not empty. It's not empty 'cause you can see people behind her. She's taken up five seats because she wants to take a nap. Now if it's the middle of the night and you're in the American airlines Waiting area and there's nobody there fine. That's fine you know. It's tough traveling but when you're picking up five seats i mean. Do you think you will are doing this. My father's Best friend charles lane was the most dignified man that i've ever met. He was a captain in the navy at his own blow I just admire this guy so much. He dressed elegant elegantly even when he was casually dressed. Now this was another era. I admit they have beautiful suits and was just such a dignified person. The idea of charles lane and by the way he was never charlie he was always charles of charles lane going into a public waiting room taking off his shoes and putting his feet up on a table for all see. I just can't and it doesn't connect that thing that mystifies me as i was raised by wolves. No better like what's y'alls excuse. It's it's you know what it is. It's selfishness that's all it's selfishness. it's not mom's basement. You're not in your mom's basement we all want. I guess everybody wants to be in their parents basement. No matter where it is a restaurant awaiting room an airport. you know. i'm going to be as comfortable. Because i want to the idea of presenting yourself in some dignified or even cool way. Just it's gone out the window. What happened to you know. I want to be perceived as kind of a cool guy. A cool guy doesn't take off your shoes and put his feet up on a table next to people right what this has nothing to do with being a guy and everything to do with being thoughtful human. This is a restaurant not your own house. This is not about being cool. The problem bob is that too. Many people have been coolest their first priority and being cool as a selfish thing being quote. What i said cool no serving like the way you feel like a cool person. Lives he selfish. He's a selfish juvenile. That's what he is. When i when i said cool i didn't mean i'm too cool for the room. I do whatever i want. I meant cool. Like i'm kind of a cool guy. Cool guy dresses a certain way or presents himself as certain way you know maybe he thinks that is cool. Clooney into that. Maybe he thinks that is cool. Maybe he thinks that's the height of casual cool de restaurant. No shirt no shoes. No service grow up with that. And it's like you go back. You pine you're occupying a public space and now nobody else can use that space all-ten piggies went to market like. I don't know what to do with these people. I know and i don't think we can go back. I think once you're down that road of ultra casualization. There's no backing up. Oh no oh no no. There's there there will be no these people that. Imagine a return to some better former time. Time doesn't go backward. Time goes the next thing he's gonna do is he's going to walk into starbucks kick off his flipflops prop his feet and then cradle his kony's in a cup of crushed ice because it's a hot day. Oh, wait. Charles lives downtown. He doesn't draw on. You know, we we've known About Charles condition for a while and We were very vague about it, You know? So I told the people who would ask me what Where? Sister Dottie, what's going on with Sister Dottie and I would just reply with she's having some health situation was very vague about it. Because, you know, I didn't feel like it was my place to say anything. But the other comments I got was How many people sister Dottie helped come out of the closet. So many people, sister Dottie helped feeling better about who they really are, You know? S o. That was public service. "Planner professionals. Focused on providing holistic financial planning from retirement and investments to taxes and estate planning. In the client's best interest. Let's make a plan dot org's It's morning edition on W. N. Y. C and Michael Hill Last week, Our race and Justice unit reported on the disparity between the number of black and brown people going through the justice system in New York. And the judges who actually sit on the bench. Today we drill down on the people who charged and prosecute crime in one region of our state. More than a third of all criminal defendants on Long Island are black men, but they're just to blackmail Assistant district attorneys for all of Long Island. That's just half a percent. W S H use Charles Lane reports in 1998 Don Bollock was one of two black assistant district attorneys and Nassau County. When he was told to prosecute a mother for abusing her teenage daughter. It's like a 16 year old girl. And she was having sex with some guy. Older guy. Mom goes there. Finds her beats a with a belt. Then takes her to the hospital. Make sure that she's not pregnant or anything else. He talks to the mother talks to the child and decides this isn't abuse. Now there are a lot of white folks who don't think that you should be. Beating your kids. A lot of other cultures. Black cultures believe that you want to set your kids straight. We're all like, went back and forth about this with his supervisor who was white. I was like I refused to prosecute a person for a D felony. Salt. We're not pressing me to go to jail for seven years when that person in fact was disciplining their child. Finally, the supervisor agreed to a lesser charge, but the experience stayed with Wrolich. He left the D. A's office in 2000 and three I felt it the district attorney's office very controlled. Line assistants are given the flexibility to make decisions. Now he's on the other side of the courtroom as a criminal defense attorney facing prosecutors that don't reflect the community. There are hardly any male blacks nationalize just to the west of Queen Anne is Theseventies most populous county in the state after New York City. It's also increasingly diverse. Yet only 6% of NASA prosecutors are black and Suffolk, the neighboring county to the east. It's only 3%. Both officers agreed. This is a problem, and they are trying to recruit more lawyers of color, especially black men. Our first issue is getting people in the door. So changing the perception that NASA is racist April. Montgomery is one of only 13 black assistant district attorneys and NASA, which has 280 A's He's also director of recruiting and says her messages aimed at things other than prosecution. It's not just arresting people and throwing them in jail. These are community services that we have That you may not know we have these air alternatives to incarceration, but her pitches at odds with the statistics, According to New York's Office of Court Administration, white defendants on Long Island are more likely to get finds, while black defendants are more likely to get jail time, even for the same crime. Example, petty larceny Over the last six months, half of black and Hispanic people sentence for the same thefts were given jail time. No whites were imprisoned. Instead, they got finds probation or nothing. I don't know that having more Black men in the office would change that. But it certainly would be an interesting study. Leslie Anderson is an executive A D A. In Suffolk. She says she is aware of the disparity and that it's something that they are investigating. She says, it could have something to do with criminal history. Still, she is aggressively trying to hire more black men Last year was theme most aggressive push to date, the black bar associations, the black law school associations We deal with historically black colleges we drew in somewhere in the neighborhood of 400 candidates from 80 law schools around the country. And yet, and still we're just not getting blackmails to apply. Anderson blames two things a small number of black law students graduating from local law schools and a distrust in the justice system. But all of a Roche disagrees. That's horrible. If you're starting off with that idea in your head like how genuinely efforts be. Roche was the only black male 88 Suffolk for several years, he suggests, rather than trying to change the way black people see prosecutors. These offices should change the way they impact black lives. Better policies could be fashioned. No regards to other issues that may arise. Whether it's gangs, whether it's drugs, whatever it is, you know better. Deals could be arrived at could be more of emphasis on rehabilitation. In other words, Roche says, reimagine the justice system from the inside out. Ow! N Y C. I'm Charles Lane. For more on this story, visit gothamist dot com. Support for W. N. Y. C comes from Swan.

"This is from The New York Times there had like Biden sets up 10 Day blitz of executive orders. I'm hoping that this is going to make it completely clear. This is a slow process of us learning as a nation that these executive orders air, not the way to go. I mean, they're being living growing with presidents going back to Will you go away back and go back to Clinton? You can go back to, But so Obama did a lot. I got a pen and a phone. Then Trump did it, Altun and now Biden just going to immediately wipe out the one Trump wiped out the ones Obama did bite is gonna wipe out the ones Trump did And hopefully while gonna learn is the nation Hey, let's take the time. Let's do the footwork to get something through the Legislature signed in the law that can't be overturned. The second, You lose an election, right? It's no way to run a country to have who's ever president just change all the rules. I heard Charles Lane Ping, writer for The Washington Times, talking over the weekend, and he said, quite eloquently every Executive order. Is witness to the failings of Congress. Absolutely the moral lessons. That's what he said Absolutely right. These Vega's good sounding laws and then just let the executive branch in these giant agencies decide what the laws mean. You just make whatever laws and rules you need just to just we don't want to worry about it. We don't want to be on the record is advocating one thing or another, and we We can't be troubled to actually write laws that govern the government department becomes this self governing beast. So many examples. Immigration's one of the great ones, so rather than them want to take a vote on any of it or lose their great issue that they can fundraise on. They let who's ever president at the time, just make immigration policy and that president gets to make that immigration policy to the day they're not president than the next person makes different immigration policy rather than Congress getting their act together, and actually, you know, solidifying something in law. It's very frustrated, right, right and actually that the immigration was the one that Charles Lane was talking about, he said. It's a perfect example. They have no interest in solving this because they fundraiser on it. They get to the polls on it. They yell about? It's a problem that must be solved in the last thing they want to do is solve it. I do want to talk about the ice cream eating contest we had in our house over the weekend, Maybe one of our worst parenting moments. Ever. Good thing about who decides to have an ice cream who decides to have a who can eat the most ice cream contest? Oh, it sounds ill advised to me, but who am I to judge? Um, I suppose one headline we gotta hit you with this. I'm looking at the headline in the Babylon Be before we get to that we will go through the plea promised Biden flurry of his executive orders in a few minutes. There's quite a few and it's interesting. What a crazy way to run a country though. You get a new president in everything changes immediately because they wipe out the last president's executive orders because Congress didn't do anything, meaning laws change all the laws immediately. One person Great way to do it anyway. You know the Babylon bees fake right? Okay, It's parody. It's real parity after capital riot.

But, um he all the songs about drinking whiskey, There's hardly a song. That doesn't promote drinking whiskey. And you know I'm not. I don't drink, but I'm not going to be a teetotaler in my home. And I'm not going to, you know, band that from the home of their old or try to convince them they should never drink in that sort of thing. But the every day propaganda of this is the way you should live your life and it's lots of fun. I'm not sure that does any good. Yeah, Interesting. You know, it's funny. I was thinking of the other side of that coin I've recently after being known as Jim Guy for a long time. I've really started to enjoy bourbon that's like cocktail of choice. Straight up on the rocks. And But then I started to think his bourbon is a whiskey. If you're not into, you know, finding Bibles. There are roughly two songs about drinking your life away with Jim and I think they're both written written by Pete Townsend. Other who they're, like seven million written about ruining your life with we So Yeah, And I'm thinking Is that just a Southern thing? That you know that happens to be the drink of choice where most country music has been written historically, or is there something about that the delicious little brown treat? That's especially bad he drinks before, during and after the show. You could do that when you're young. Well, we'll check back in on you within your 45. You can do that, as a professional musician. Think it's another thing to let's see. Tell you what the drinking playing music's a lot like drinking, playing golf. You get eggs, the exact right amount going, You're going to do better than you've ever done before. You have one drink more thing that you're gonna make an ass of yourself. I'm the guy who the CEO of Parlor says they may never find a home that might be the end of parlor. Um hey, said that today. I want to talk a little bit about not that in specific but how difficult it was. I was doing some Cuban on research last night to learn more about the whole thing. It's difficult now that it's been banned from so many places and is the casting. Is that a good thing? But we can talk about that later. Yes, funny. You should bring that up. Charles Lane wrote an opinion piece in The Washington Post about that that I found pretty intriguing about how it just any site. Several examples from history of how it tends the drive stuff underground and make it harder to You know, be aware of, but a couple of stories from the science desk. I mentioned this briefly, but I wanted to get into a briefly yesterday. I want to get into it a little more of the New York Times. With an article in missions plunged more than 10% last year. If the trend can be sustained, it would put the United States within striking distance of one of its major goals under the Paris climate Agreement, So all you need to do is have a worldwide pandemic where nobody is allowed to go to work or on vacation in tens of millions of people unemployed in this country alone, right and you'll lower emissions. Yeah. That's him. What a stupid story. Yeah, well, you know they do get into okay. It was the pandemic extraordinary circumstances, and experts warn that the country still faced enormous challenges in getting his planet warming pollution under control. But I just I thought it was interesting Transportation, which is our largest source of greenhouse gasses saw a 15% decline in 2020. Millions of people stop driving work. Airlines canceled flights. American stroll 15% fewer miles. Demand for jet fuel fell by more than one third. Emissions from heavy industry dropped 7% like steel and cement, as automakers and other manufacturers turned out fewer goods on did well, they have a handful, Morris statistics, but I just thought all that declining energy use All of a sudden, is just crazy. And in a similar story, this is also from the science desk. It is from the science desk. I let you know if I get up from the science desk, and we do Thank you. Thomas is I've got a segment coming up called Fine. China with some stories from China. No get to later. That's not dying. Almost clever. It's okay. It's not a desk, but it's got a cool name. Now I've just become aware that you know, Gen X and I'm Gen X. You know your millennials You're Jen's e or whatever. I'm supposed to call those but those that mouth the youngsters they have no interest in China. In China. Hutch is in the fine silver and the rest of it. Yeah, Yeah, I know. All right, right. And you know, Judy and I are like, Why do we have this? We never use it. It seemed like the most important thing to be on your wedding registry back when we got married was yeah, but back in the day it was given Right, Right. And now we I don't even remember the last time I saw it anyway, moving along and still it's science desk, according to researchers at Stanford University in the Universe, and UC San Diego Wildfire smoke accounted for about half of all small particle air pollution in the Western U. S in recent years. Warming temperatures fueled more destructive blazes, according to scientists, of course, But that's something half of the pollution in the western half of the U. S. Was wildfires. That's not surprising if you live anywhere that's been affected by the fires or the smoke. There was a month last year. I think it was a month. It was several weeks where I didn't see the sky. It was just dark and smoky. Every single day. Um, speaking of indoctrination, the way my kids are being indoctrinated into the joys of whiskey by country music. Kids. If you got kids in school, they definitely get indoctrinated into the world of climate change and global warming and how important all that is, because they talk about it all the time in school, so the next generation Will certainly think that is a high priority because they've been told practically daily in school that it.
