"On this Christmas Eve. It is December. 24th and President Trump on Wednesday vetoed the annual defense policy bill following through on threats, toe veto the measure that has broad bipartisan support in Congress and potentially setting up the first override veto of his Administration. The bill affirms 3% pay raises for U. S troops and authorizes more than 740 billion and military programs and construction. Long before issuing that Vito though President Trump offered a serious of rationales for rejecting it. National security Adviser Robert O'Brien on the laundry list of problems the administration has This bill, unfortunately, didn't include the protections that were necessary with section 2 30, the Communications Decency Act, which our adversaries are using to promote disinformation on Twitter and Facebook and other social media platforms. We've got to get that reformed to protect the American people Number two, The president campaigned on ending forever wars and he's we've brought down troops in Afghanistan, Iraq to 2500 in both places. We could redeploy those trips to the front lines and in eastern Europe in the end of Pacific to protect American interests and and protect us from our great power adversaries, the same ones that are Have had us under attack cyber and otherwise for many, many years, and there's this bill purports to to take away his constitutional rights as commander in chief, the boy armed forces, and the same goes with Germany, where we want to move troops. Out of these big fixed bases and put him into not frontline positions to deter our adversaries and protect our friends s So it was constitutionally suspect And and lastly, it gets into culture wars that that really shouldn't be debated. There may be a legitimate debate there, but they shouldn't be debated and the military should be held hostage. With the NBA, so the president didn't think it was the right bill. That's a sign of this time he wants, destroying two fancies. He's just submitted at 355 Ship Navy Shipbuilding plan that's terrific and is paid for for many, many years. In part because we're drying down and ending in wrapping absolutely is forever. Wars s so he's got a great record on the fence. He's proud of it, and he wants a clean bill to come back from the Congress. As soon as possible one that he can sign. That audio courtesy of Fox News. The House was poised to return Monday and the Senate Tuesday to consider votes to override the president's veto. Democratic Senator Jack Reed of the Armed Services Committee said the president's declaration that China was the biggest winner in the defense bills false. He has the backing of Republican leadership. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senator John Thune and representative Mike Gallagher all say the bill would Help deter Chinese aggression. McConnell said it was important for Congress to continue its nearly six decades long streak of passing and the defense policy bill. And while the president locked up lawmakers with new negotiations he pardoned at more than two dozen people, including former campaign chair Paul Manafort and Charles Kushner. That's the father of his son in law. Kushner was convicted of trying to take out revenge on his brother in law after he found out the man was cooperating with federal authorities. Former New Jersey governor Chris Christie explained to PBS in 2019 that it was one of the most disgusting cases he's ever prosecuted as an attorney. I just think that it was so obviously had to be prosecuted. That mean if a guy hires a prostitute To seduce his brother in law and videotapes it and then, since the videotape to his sister to attempt to intimidate her from testifying before a grand jury, do I really need any more justification than that? I mean, it's one of the most ghosts and disgusting crimes that I prosecuted when I was U s attorney and I was US attorney in New Jersey. Margaret. So we have some gross and disgusting crime going on there, but I just laid out the fax and any objective person. It's the facts knows. Confronted with those facts. I have a moral and ethical obligation to bring that prosecution. Now the scheme didn't work. Kushner later pleaded guilty to tax evasion and making illegal campaign donations in a case tailor made for tabloids. The White House and its announcement cited Kushner's charitable work since he completed his sentence in 06 as the reason he deserved clemency. It's not just Republicans and Democrats behaving badly telling constituents and do as I say, and not as I do. Trump pardons Paul Manafort, Roger Stone and Charles Kushner

"Trump parted another batch of loyalists including Roger Stone and Paul Manafort tonight. Charles Kushner, the father of Mr Trump's son in law. Jared Kushner also had his legal record wiped. The president made this new batch of clemencies just after leaving the White House for Mar A Lago in Palm Beach, Florida ABC News Political director Rick Klein joined W. T. O P s Dmitri Sodas to take a deeper look at those pardons, stunning series of names, the kind of list that you can't imagine any other president ever. Compiling about a month before he leaves office. These are political loyalists of the father of his own son in law, Jared Kushner, among them in Paul Manafort, Roger Stone to individuals who remained loyal through some very tough legal times. They really brought upon themselves the president clearly using his power now, on the way out the door to reward loyalists in ways that would be unfathomable. You know the any other administration. This is not The normal channel or the normal course of business. These are not people that would have been pardoned, or Heather senses committed by any other president, but saying oil to President Trump has paid off for them. Can we talk about the Mueller investigation as sprawling and wide ranging as it was essentially being undone here? Is that my my overreaching or is that correct? I think the president is systematically taking away the accomplishments and undermining The very real prosecutorial work that they accomplished particularly with the Paul Manafort conviction. I think the Roger Stone one probably fits into this is well, you had a office inside the Department of Justice that was very aggressively looking for things that were prosecutable, and they found them in many cases, and now the president is coming out and saying This whole thing was Was a witch hunt from the start. And that's That's what his former national security adviser, or, you know, already the beneficiary of one of these pardons one of these computations and I think yes, I think anything associated with Mueller, the president is more inclined than most to say. This is something that I can undo with this pardon power we have heard in recent months. Defenders of the president point to the sheer numbers that is that other presidents maybe take Bill Clinton as an example, may have actually pardoned more people in the end and that President Trump should Not be criticized for using one of the few powers that a president can wield. Shall we say unilaterally, and he can use it, But I think the criticism is very much justified when you realize that this is not the normal process where people petitioned for the Department of Justice, you get a recommendation not to say that other presidents have never used political loyalties, particularly Bill Clinton in the past, But we remember times were Where there was outward lobbying on George W. Bush for Scooter Libby from his own Vice President Dick Cheney. He's still resisted and said, No, I'm not gonna issue that pardon. Actually, he was pardoned ultimately, by President Trump similar for Barack Obama. He did not consider pardons that that would have that kind of personal connection. They went up to the Department of Justice. The president has this part in power, he can use it. It's one of the few unchecked, unchallenged powers, but it's clear that President Trump is using it specifically to single out people that have been loyalty to him to pay off political patron's political donors, people in his own family. It may be setting up the ultimate pardons, which would be potentially pardons of people in the inner inner circle and maybe in his own family. "Tonight another round he's doling out clemency to a new group of loyalists, wiping away convictions and sentences as he aggressively employees his power to override the courts and Juries and prosecutors and to pardon another group of people. One recipient is Charles Kushner. That's the dad of his son in law, Jared Kushner to others pardoned well known names here. Paul Manafort, the 2016 campaign chairman, and Roger Stone, his longtime informal adviser and friend. If you're just tuning in new pardons issued tonight by President Trump. These are the most prominent names in a batch of 26 pardons and three commutations that the White House has to disclose tonight after President Trump left for Mar a Lago for the holiday. So again New pardons tonight for President Trump, including Charles Kushner. It is the father of his son in law and adviser Jared Kushner. Paul Manafort at one time, the campaign chairman in 2016 and Roger Stone, more as we learn it tonight on W T o P President Trump has followed through on threats to veto the annual defense policy bill. The measure has a large swath of bipartisan support in Congress. It could lead to the first override vote of his presidency in this bill of 3% pay raise for U. S troops. It also authorizes more than $740 billion in military programs in construction. The president offers some reasons for his veto. He wants lawmakers to include limits on social media companies that he claims are biased against him. The president also wants to strip out language that would allow the Reno Naming of military bases that honor Confederate leaders. President Trump claims China would be the biggest winner from the defense bill. But he says so without offering details. Congress has until January 3rd toe override that veto say that he was going to veto this bill He followed through and really what it does is set up a test it passed with veto proof. Majorities. But once President Trump makes clear that he doesn't like it do some of those Republicans who voted for it go wobbly. My guess is not because they knew what they were doing when they passed it. This isn't one where he sprang a late surprise. Unlike the coded relief bill, which was a surprise this one he's made clear his opposition all off political founding editor John Harris joining us W T O p A little earlier. President Trump, In the meantime, is sharply blasted the bipartisan covert 19 economic relief bill passed by Congress this week demanding changes, including an increase of the 600 stimulus checks. Say it again the $600 stimulus checks the president is pushing for $2000 for each American who's eligible. The covert 19 relief package is part of a bill that funds the government through September of next year. And that would mean a government shutdown. CBS NEWS Political analyst Leonard Stein Horns says there are many Implications. This is a stunning turnabout that has the potential of throw Washington into chaos. Shut down the government delay essential aid to American families and businesses and leave renters and unemployed workers with few resource is to cope with their uncertainty. And there's another political twist to this as well because if the president follows through on his threat in Congress doesn't come up with an alternative voters and Georgia may take their frustrations out on the two Republican senators running for reelection in what is already a tight race. It's unclear how serious the president's threat is, or whether he would actually veto the bipartisan legislation. There's a quick response from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Pelosi posted on her Twitter page. Democrats would bring the president's request for $2000 payments to the House floor for a vote by unanimous consent before the end of the week. Mike DeBonis, congressional reporter for The Washington Post, says this could lead to another standoff. There's gonna be a very brief session tomorrow in the House, a Democrat will come in trying task A bill to do the $2000 Jack. We expect the Republican is going to stand up and say, Well, That's not all the president wants. He wants to get rid of other parts of this bill, so they're gonna object and say we gotta negotiate this, but you know if that's the case Democrats, Maceo, we're not negotiating more. We'll do. We just signed the bill that we already talked about. And move on. But that could just really spark an extended sort of stand off. That could mean among other things, the government shutdown people not getting the benefits they were expecting, and this could last, you know, frankly, all the way till Joe Bynes inaugurated on January 20th Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer says he's hopeful the president won't be told the coronavirus package, he says Congress can pass additional.
