"This's your happiest moment of the week when your song comes up second right thing. Dr. Ricky Jones is chair Pan African Studies University of Louisville. He's written another brilliant column for The Courier Journal. About the fatigue factor that could set in for people who work hard at anti racism. He's also host here on I Heart radio Sunday mornings at 10 on 93.1. What is your topic this week, Rickey? In a few segment is with Dr Charles Jones, who the up at the University of Cincinnati about the 100th anniversary of the Negro League, So it's a great conversation with him. I think people will enjoy. You know, he gets in depth that that's that's one of one of his passion. Brilliant stuff and unbelievable talent, too. But great topic. Right? Let's jump into this while we have it. The Democratic National Convention is underway. Joe Biden's at the top of ticket Kamala Harris has introduced tonight, of course, is the VP candidate. A lot of people call her president and waiting. The problem for some progressives are actually many progressives is they don't think that they're firm enough against the police department's where a lot of progress is feel like police departments should be significantly downsized are wiped away totally Biden was signature or lead signature guy on the crime Bill. Camilla Harris, of course, considered the top cop in California. Lot of people said she unfairly locked up black men. How did they wrestled with these progressives who want more action against police when they seem to be more moderate on that topic? Well, you know, Harry, I think if people just pay attention to their records on policing Then they somewhat missed the point. And and I think the political analysis of the current situation in America where people know talk about things and by Neary, where either you know you're a quote unquote sensible, moderate. Or you're an insane progressive on the Democratic side doesn't do justice to the reality of the situation. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris bombing themselves off as progressive is just wrong. You know, I think people need to be honest about their record and don't get me wrong. You're a first time listener. I am not here supporting the Republican Party or Donald Trump. I think there are some decent Republicans out there. But I think Donald Trump is a mad man. So let me be clear. That's just my opinion. This is an in defense of Donald Trump. But Kamala Harris and Joe Biden both have records that they have to give an honest accounting off When you talk about the crime bill that led to the disproportion incarceration of people of color and four people in this country, the things that Kamala Harris did that let's just too long. For me to recount you know, here on a very short segment. So if you if you would talk to me about Kamala Harris, the A G and that record and what I would vote for her it all heck, no. Kamala Harris, in effect has been campaign but president since she became a senator, That's the person who is in process, So I'm willing to give both of them a chance to see what they will do. But when you look at their records anybody to criticize people asking questions about their records. Like, you know, like you nasty in him. You don't hate us from the days of Pale show off something If you ask the question, I think that's incredibly probably mad, so they gotta work through that stuff. Yes, She's going to make a good launch tonight. And I think she has to talk to the progressives above all else, because that's the part. That's the splintering part of the party that they need to seal up in order to move that campaign forward. Well, you know. Ah, Ah, journalist made a very good point that the Democratic Party is in effect going through its teaparty moment that at the door right? It hasn't happened yet, but it is coming except it's coming from the other side because Alexander Acosta Cortez made a very good point when she said a man has two party system put people In the political boxes in which they don't really belong. There is no, really doesn't make any sense for her and Joe by people like that to be members of the same party, But that's what they have right now. But if struggling for a little more sensitive job by themselves that Americans don't want a revolution. You know, they just want incremental change. I'm not sure that's really, really true. But these are the choices that were left with, and that's the problem with American politics with people from both sides are you argue that Americans don't go out and participate, But they don't really give them anybody on the Democratic or the Republican side. They're excited about participating, you know, to elevate. One final topic in a couple of weeks. The Kentucky Derby is going to take place whether or not there are people there and I suspect we'll see the Goodyear blimp flying above it all Good year, employees 60,000 people. One of their employees shared a slide from Ah diversity class something that's that's essentially said and employees at this particular plan in Kansas. Could wear black lives matter or LGBTQ affirming slogans on their clothes or hats or whatever, but could not have blue lives matter or all lives matter or anything Maga or politically related. And Donald Trump, then tweets stop buying Goodyear tires, even though they're Goodyear tires on the big limousine the president has driven around. And do you think this affects Goodyear at all? Or is this just throw their name out in the spotlight? Well, I don't know if it affect Goodyear. All I think we have a thing to have a president who was attacking everybody. He talked. He speaks against cancel culture where he's conflict, trying to cancel people right in his problem that you have. A president of the United States was literally attacking the post office because he admitted on, he admitted. He wanted to slow down million boat. You don't want to set up a situation where the post office could handle, But let me say this to be balanced about both sides..

"We do the podcast on Mondays and Thursdays. Glad to have you joining us because there's a lot going on in the world of sports, some inaction and some in retirement as in Magic Johnson stepping away from his role as president of the Lakers, a bizarre set of circumstances. I I'm pretty sure no one who whoever got LeBron James or player of that caliber immediately retired the year after he. I didn't even tell Jeannie bus in person. His reason was he couldn't bear to tell her in person because he loves her so much and the takeaway was he wants to go back to having fun in his life. And I suppose when you have a trio of seasons where you you're winning in the thirties. It's more fun. Not to be a president of a team and not Mike Lupu. You have been talking about Magic Johnson's lack of performance as an executive for a little bit of time. So why don't you take thi this off match? You know, Bob knows this. You know this. I really like her Johnson. I I I met him when he was on his way to the NCAA finals in one thousand nine hundred seventy nine there was a night when he he went into the lane against LSU and got a shot blocked, and he said something to the guy blocked. I think it was Charles Jones. And I said to him after the game. What did you say to him? And he said, well, he said you just smack me, but I will be back and back and back. So you've. Better be ready to smack and smack and smack. This is a nineteen year old kid who was so ready, and he's had one of the great careers in American sports. We all remember exactly where we were when he said, he was HIV positive, but Mitch, and Bob, you know, I have been talking about this for a long time. There is nothing. He has ever done to indicate that he was ready to be a time, Danny aines like basketball executive, and he's a charming front, man. But that's not how you build championship basketball teams. No, he tried to fit this in as one of his many business enterprises. And so it for this. I blame Jeanie or anybody else that had that didn't understand this from the beginning. I'm sorry. Let me we've had long enough to study him. They've had long enough to study him. This is all entirely predictable. We're not none of us are going to say that he's dumb or that. If he were to apply himself that he could not have done the job. But he was not going to do that. And. I didn't think he you couldn't see him going over to scout. In in Europe. You didn't see that happening with him grab? No. He was never seen off GRA airport ever in the men's room or anywhere else. Never. It seems to me that that big culprit in this genie bus and her predilection, it seems for picking people based on her emotions towards them as opposed to who can actually do the job. Now. This is what happens when you inherit a team from your father, and you don't necessarily, you know, get into it. Because it's been a lifelong passion of yours or you've worked your way up. So what we're hearing. Now is she loves magic. That's why she brought magic in. She really likes Luke Walton adjusts doesn't wanna fire him she's fund of rob Pelinka. So doesn't want to get rid of him. Well, fun is in love and Liker. Are all fine words, if you're having a thanksgiving dinner, it's not necessarily the way you win basketball games? And if Magic Johnson really did quit at this moment. And it is a bizarre moment..

"Just save the season for Louisville with a three Minnesota had given up on the plane that was an airball shot from way out there. Dwayne Sutton's tough day continuing gotta give credit to Maliki Williams stand in the place. Saving the ball game. At the Darius Perry. Who makes a monster shot? Not sure he called glass, but a big time shot from about twenty five feet. He was way back from the arc. Tried to get the shot before the shot clock goes off Bank in along the left side if it stands it's a nine point game. They're looking at it right now. You bet a chance to look at the angles. They're looking at Robbie, what do you think I call on this floor was that? It was initially good. That's going to be important is incredibly close. But it looks like as the shot clock gets to zero that ball is just out of Darius Perry's hands. I would expect this to count and make this administration nine point lease seventy six sixty seven if it stands with two forty six to go. This is such a critical replay review. It's either a made three or a shot clock violation. It's either a nine point lead or a twelve point lead. That's a huge swing late in this game. Are officials have. Looked at it. Pat, Driscoll David hall, Charles Jones now discussing what they've seen. Back to the monitor again. One more look at it. I mean, you are parson this out frame by frame video wise at this point trying to see if the ball got out of the fingertips of various Perry. Before it went he'll have ten on the game. If it counts it'll be his third made three. Charles Jones walking away now from Pat Driscoll and David hall is they look at it together. He does not want to influence the committee. So he'll stay out. He's recused himself from this conversation. Two officials leaning over the scores table looking at the monitor staring at it rewind it afraid forward Efrain back of frame forward. Afraid. Everybody knows how critical this is certainly the three guys in stripes. And you'd have to think because it counts on the floor that may have huge implications on this call because I just think it's so close to me it looks like it's just out of his hand. But because the call is good on the floor. That is why I would expect this to stand. One more look at it. For officials getting another angle this from a camera behind the play shows the clock shows the ball. It is a three as Robbie Hummel predicted. Now one for one in the NCAA tournament on Robbie's reviews. That's a segment we should have a sponsor reveals are. Yeah, I mean, what else would you expect for Robbie humble on a perfect game? In the first inning right now. Myself three up and three down. He's got perfection going through one half inning. To forty six to go mixing our sports here. And now pressure applied free time out for both coaches, Michael hurt. Lou inbound, Minnesota by nine seventy six sixty seven to route gets it gives to Coffey Coffey throws it back to her ch-. Her dribbles up on the left. Hand bounces it to mcbrayer across the timeline. A little bit of break that time for Minnesota. Mcmahon now. Mcbrayer dribbles middle of the floor. Chessmaster hurt on the left side her to leave it behind for Cal Sharana week. Calcium will bounce it to the right side to one dribble gives it off to mcbrayer right wing with tend to shoot mcbrayer two to one on one against the right? Block five to shoot. Docket goes to mcbrayer free on the shot clock to to shoot mcbrayer behind the back dribble gets into the paint floater off the rim. No, good rebound. Anoc global ball to tend to go down nine left to right Perry. Attacking driving all the way to the rim against hurt. Layup good seven point game logo closing it. From nineteen now to seven with two minutes to go drive. Darius Perry showing off his explosiveness have to make sure if you're Minnesota guard. You gotta come to the basketball right now. Cannot allow Michael hurt who's not used to handling the ball. Can't let him get stuck with the basketball. They break the presto hurt to the right hand wing will set it up in the half, court mcbrayer. Now, double teamed on that right side. He's pushed all the way back out near the timeline. Got hit the face, and that's a foul. The foul is going to be called on. Darius perry. Perry. Just reaching in got a piece of the chin of DuPree, mcbrayer Blinken that one awful little bit. And that's going to send mcbrayer to the line. This is not the worst thing that ever happened to Louisville though, Robbie Minnesota's been terrible the line today. Seven of fifteen mcbrayer has an attempted a free throw, but he's only a sixty eight percent shooter. And this is still a one an one. And you think the game pressure of it being a one and one it plays tricks on guys you see good shooters go to the line and one on one situations, and sometimes crazy things happen. Glad you said mcbrayer has been a little bit shakey on the season at sixty eight percent. Rare ready sets free throw off. No, good rebound syllable. He'll push it ahead to Cunningham Louisville down seven wants down nineteen in the second half ninety seconds to play in the NCAA tournament here in Des Moines Nottingham between the circles sets fires three top of the key. No, good rebound though to route. And now Bourne able to set their press as Minnesota now will walk it up. Big miss for the Louisville. Cardinals. Mcbrayer across the timeline trap. Comes gets rid of a tool to on the left wing back to mcbrayer, one ten to go. Here's Coffey surprise Mobile's. Not fouling right now. The way Minnesota shop wreath mcbrayer with ten to shoots right near the timeline defended out there by four seven to shoot. And there is a foul on four. Chris mack. Can't believe it. He bent, his knees said don't foul seven to shoot. And they foul mcbrayer going to the line. And now that's the ten th team foul, so depre- mcbrayer gets two free throws with a minute to go. Oh, that's a senior Guan forest. Played a ton. Of college basketball games. And you can imagine the disgust that Chris Mack is feeling right now yet you allow that possession to run down at nine on the shot clock. And then just a silly Rican? Foul DuPree mcbrayer making you pay knocking down the first free throw for that is a huge foul. They were playing the possession out. And Chris MAC when he saw it happen. He looked like a man who was about to get sick to his stomach on the sidelines. Bent over mouth, agape mcbrayer. It's both free. Throws to dig free throws for the senior decree mcbrayer. Minnesota's latest nine seventy eight sixty nine under a minute to. Go Cunningham will bring it up before he starts to stand here in the morning. This McMahon launches a three that's an air ball won't go knocked back into play. But right back to Minnesota who is fouled by Jordan war up. Forty eight point four seconds to go gopher fans starting to feel their programs. First NCAA tournament wins since two thousand thirteen. Eight and ten overall in the moment and the gophers trying to make it to the round of thirty two. Minnesota the ten seed in the east they were firmly on the bubble just three weeks ago, they beat Purdue late in the regular season as two free throws good. They fought that. But then a lot of things happened around the country put a right back on the bubble. Then they made a little bit of a one in the big ten tournament. Robbie they got wins in the tournament over Penn State and Purdue before losing to Michigan. And that certainly salted you gotta give this team a lot of credit. They've been on the bubble for what seems like the better half this year as we see Daniel the second free throw they hung in there. They got big wins. And now going to be rewarded with an NCAA tournament. Win Cunningham on the drive down the baseline is shot blocked little two ru commits the personal foul and Otaru. With that foul. His for his fourth will send the Cunningham to the line for a pair forty three point nine seconds to go. Minnesota eighty Louisville sixty nine. Cunningham at the line. First free throw is good one more for Cunningham in comes on four and Richard Pitino squad. Briefing ever closer to our first mild upset of the NCAA tournament ten beating seven as Cunningham both free throws and Chris MAC will use a time out. He's got one romantic eighty to.

"Damaged was FCA Marianna, a medium security prison in the Florida, panhandle. The roof was ripped off the fence was destroyed forcing hundreds of inmates to relocate to a facility in Mississippi more than four hundred miles away since then correction officers like Charles Jones have had to make that seven hour drive for two week stints the now with the government shutdown. They're making that journey with no pay. We're all doing we'll hardships for. Now because of the hurricane itself and the democrat, but then now to have to go out there and not getting our travel claims reimbursed is just put additional hardship on people and on his own family. Saw a little rain months pregnant right now, you know, the plan was for her not to have to work from about eight months to bench as a baby. But now she's going back to work a couple of days a week as a ten year veteran of the prison system Jones has been through shutdowns before they've all had their own dynamics. But it's always the uncertainty that comes with it. And this one there's a lot of uncertainty if you know elected officials are actually going to do their job and come together, and I'm making agreement they're supposed to do because they're getting paid to do it right now. And we're not adding insult to injury having to deal with unruly inmates. Who are still getting paid now laughing at the officers. They are doing things extent of like. Oh, yeah. You guys ain't getting paid and stuff like that to lose that are working out there. There's also the fear of whether they'll have jobs at all soon. We all don't know what exactly is going on with the federal prison if they're going to rebuild if they're going to displace employees what they're doing when it comes to being sent yazoo how long that's going to go on for President Trump has warned that the shutdown might last months or even years that's not notching for Jones or for most of the roughly eight hundred thousand federal workers affected right now, just compromise.
