We can't we can't contact bus so that was a long time I didn't get back out there until december. And i remember saying like i finally like this is this is starting to become real because now i'm here every day i'm meeting you know coaches and players and i'm seeing this come in and work also. I remember being nervous. Of course the. Monte muncie have like a personality that you've got to kind of get used to on really standoffish if you don't But i do remember Dorell wright salman to summer school with the route. He went to summer school in new york and he remembered me so the moment i got there he he knew that i was on the team Someone gave him a whole number. We were like texan the entire time. So and so's around him. I remember feeling a lot more. Lucas was at least one face that i knew everyone else. I've never met before this weird. Okay so what did you do during the lockout just worked out. Stay home on. That was about it. I worked out. And i didn't have any money so i spent a lot of that time. No traveling around long island speaking at high schools and camps for like fifty dollar. Because you didn't you didn't get any you can get any any money because you guys are all locked out even though you're drafted getting so out december you show up a camp chih first camp. You've been working out The warriors are super super young. At the time. I like. I like richard. Jefferson was the old head on the team. He's like i wasn't there they're not yet he. It was when i got there. It was a it was on staff. David david lee stay sta. Step jeremy lin. David lee Monte elliot's klay thompson the row rate dominic. Wire jeremy tyler on just adrian Brandon rush. Was there in the beginning. Okay so you show up. And what was your ahmanson. Good guy really good guy you almost got. Unlv guy good hair. Great ethnic what was your opinion of staff before you got there. You can remember like. Would you think steph curry. Would you think of them for you. Got man I went to went to five star. Can't when i was in high school and step is on my team. So win on when i got there. I remember like thinking like man. This is the same. Do that like we played together. Highschool teammates and i remember it was like it was like like a level certainly should just walk up to him and like bring it up. Do you remember. But i was so hesitant about. Even though steph isn't amazing guy like very welcome in personality from the i met him and he was actually the personal. And i remember. We were teammates in fox star and hosts dan like this crazy. He remember that because you know he just went on like he was an amazing 'cause player Got all this newfound attention so that was the first thing he said when i met him. Hose like relieves down. This is a normal guy. Can super cool and i was able to talk to him At that time he was dealing with a lot of ankle. Injuries palms healthy. So i just remember his his work at the course. Of course he stayed after he worked on his game. We shot a lot of shots and things like that but decide how discipline. He was as far as like taking care of his body icing all the time. Every time apple practice it was always like is book in front of his locker And how open. It was conversation with him. There was times. I will be in a room with him and i'll be so like hesitant to say something and he will be the one like you know like seren things like bring like starting conversations with me and i ended up getting really really cool without their way back to the five stuff. Was he good. If i star in he was good he wanted to go to virginia tech. I remember i remember that school. He wanted to go to that player. Any allow yelich between six shorties plan. But and and i didn't know who he was when we our teams put together but he was done a lot. He was a lot different from a lot of guys out there. He was shooting it of course wealth from three He was always really crafty with like his layoffs and things like that he was definitely. He didn't have that big big name. Everyone else had. I can't but you could definitely see different skill level. Okay but would you. If i were to tell you this dude is gonna be a two-time end. Epa the nba at at that point in time. What would you say at that time. Probably not but had nothing to do with him and it had had more to do with the hype that a lot of other players had official like certain like it was certain names that you heard all the time that when you saw it was like you had this amazing amount of like expectations. Which you were going to see steph. At that time he didn't have that big. That big big name. Ghost were to me. This is what i used to say. If there was someone that they call them bodies full name all the time they were like really really good player. That's a good one. He wasn't light at the time. But you could definitely see the difference.

"In minnesota workout noted malcolm and i wasn't like ecstatic about that. I was looking at the seams laughing. Emma man is only about twenty picks. Something's gotta happen on new one hundred percent. I wasn't going to be a laker. But it's so much going on at the time i couldn't really like own emotion because my family was so animated the entire time so okay. So who do you get the call. I got the call from my agent. He was he was on the phone. He was like you know you. You gotta you have to prove yourself They made a mistake. And we're gonna prove that. They made a mistake. Young of the phone and my family was all at that point. They're all like drained. I'm just reacting to everything that happened. And i was standing up and before like adam suicide it. I just had like a pain. And i like i was house. Sold mad is so bad. I had to pay and just like threw it on the ground and it just exploded everywhere and everybody was like shocked. Like like a you. It's okay don't worry he's going to happen to get outta this while on out of service with the forty four pigs call my name in a room dislike went crazy in a phone went from probably five messages saliva. Three hundred something. It was crazy backward. People left voicemails messages. Nobody nobody listens to voicemail. That'd be returned voicemail. It'd be back. That's part one of my My talk with charles jenkins will drop part two couple days will at this one kind of simmer for a little bit. It's really really good stuff I do want to say this regards the russell westbrook trade. I i've talked in. Nba people that are like look. Dude is so crazy competitive. I he pushes guys. Pushes guys limousine thing So there's obviously an attraction there and he can make plays off job. We create shots for other people. Russell westbrook as a tremendous player. But does he fit the lakers. Now now he's a high volume low make shooter who needs the ball in his hands. Get the ball. When lebron to have the ball i yes cou could he be given the second quarter whatever to kind of do his thing but they need so much more shooting around him now. The one thing about ross is opposed to ben. Simmons is like at some point. You do have to take these shots and There's a lot of good there i just. I don't know how they're going to get enough other pieces. He's also older he's at three surgeries lebron's had his first couple of injuries. He's ever had his career. Not because he's there's something wrong with him. He just you get to your mid thirties and things are to break down. Plus anthony. davis is the youngest of the three and he breaks down all the time. So i still wanna see what they put together around him what they're able to get a signing trade dinner shooter and they can find a way to move some pieces around but i don't love that that mix and and they're all friends and we all think well all buddies so get like. When does that work didn't work with westbrook and harden. They were buddies. You're not the love the guy that you're playing yet love playing with the guy but honestly love him off the court. I don't. I don't know i just i don't love it i love it. It's very very interesting. You know they were going to hire scott brooks as an assistant. They didn't so now you have coaching staff. That hasn't coached either. That's really interesting. You will love part two If you love part one you didn't love part one you'll love part two.

"What are you afraid why. He said look at our bench. He said if we take you out your second best player on the team's not much longer before you back into the game so he said you gotta dare to be great. And i was like and i was kind of looking at him like is this. Are you serious. are you talking to me. He was like yeah you have to. And he was like it's going to start in practice practice. We're gonna put you against In you have to like you know get comfortable and being more aggressive in the next couple practices i was. I mean. of course from time would kill me all the time house freshman in kill me even get the best meet a majority of time. But i felt comfortable making mistakes and looking at coaches reaction. Because it wasn't like i was taking shots. I was never like outshot player over. Thank mistakes so once i was able to get bet amount of confidence from this associate head coach at that time the next game i was way more comfortable. You know taking more shots in in in in playing like what i think in the game i was. I was in the right spots. I made i made all my open looks and started to play a lot. Better in the kendall. The lights which went on the first time. I saw the first time i saw you play and like was like a this guy can play was your junior year you guys took on yuka right and uconn head kemba and i remember you. Andrew dice right. They had kemba. Drum dyson. Rob stanley robbins. Yeah and you gave it to you. Had twenty five eight and four but your team's weren't as successful..

"Or are you out of the park when you. When you're that you're starting to play your eight nine ten years old mama mama to the grocery store. I moved here and there was like a dislike brochure for basketball league. That they had they was ages from those six to nine and then it had a another league from ten to thirteen where you can play. And she brought. She brought home the pamphlet we spoke about it and i think that next saturday i went down to triumph. Wanted a teams that. I've been playing ever since organized. Since were you always good. Like was like nah. I wasn't honestly on when i was really young for my for my age. I was exceptionally Something well Play really good in this league. But when i travelled around the city you know our when i like if i went to brooklyn we played in his brooklyn team. Didn't do fairly well all the time. Or if you went up to the bronx hitting us. Couches has some problems with them or if we played against teams riverside. That was big. And at that time. I wasn't with the best mona floor. Riverside church so okay so you get ready now. Now you're eggett middle school and ice school. What program did you play with. Ropley from my dad My dad had a team that we put together We dislike literally going around and finding kids am. We managed to put together a team for two years and then play for the panthers and long island. Lighten it for about two years. Always like if your debt It was good..

"The supreme compliment and penny Prop forty-eight his first year whereas i would say kate came out of his first year so in terms of development. I would say cage. Probably ahead of or penny was at at this time during his life during his career nightlife he still alive coaching anyway. All right let's get to this Charles jenkins interview. And then i'll give you a couple of thoughts on the rest of the nba draft an-and russell westbrook with the lakers without further. Do the superstar at hofstra fulmer draft pick of the golden state warriors. Charles jenkins okay. So your your first memories of playing. I i remember playing. Who are are where in brooklyn new york room My older brother my dad brooklyn's fascinating night because my dad grew up in new york and we used to go back every summer and brooklyn growing up in brooklyn brooklyn. Now is crazy crazy. Nice and expensive and everything's redone not everything but a lot of it. Is you want to talk about a place. That has done a complete transformation. But that's for people who are thinking of brooklyn now. What was broken like. When you grew up. I lived there for a short amount of time. So that would. But that's when i began playing was pretty rough. We lived in a browser area It was a lot of crime on the gangs. We started the format time. So i wanna say like maybe the first couple years plan a plate in brooklyn but my dad was so you know paranoid about where i will end up if i stayed there so we ended up moving to queens but at that time it was very tough neighborhood to live in. It was a lot of shootings. No often jug deal. In alabama friends were turning into gang members at a really young aids so it was a pretty tough experience for us. So what's that like like. What's what's your what's it really like..

"Hey welcome in. I'm doug ali ben. This is all we got a great for the next couple of episodes Charles jenkins is a fantastic player. He played for olympiakos last season. We'll get his part of this pod you'll find out what it was like to play Under kind of quarantine coverted in greece this past year. There's so much good stuff on this pot from his upbringing A tragedy which took place when he was in eighth grade Bouncing around highschools to how he made his way to hofstra to becoming a start hofstra playing really for two coaches but sorta three coaches at hofstra. And what happened Being drafted in the nba to what. It's like to play with steph curry to wednesday when monta ellis was traded. All this stuff. It's all on here so you're gonna love it. I'm not gonna do a draft recap and go through guy by guy by guy. But i do think what's fascinating is Some of the makings of these teams. Right these are the beat because if you look at the nba the teams in the nba finals. Whether they tanked or they were just bad and then they went for the full tank gusto. Phoenix was really bad. A couple of years ago milwaukee in two thousand thirteen. They were terrible and the building blocks of nba finals team starts in the draft right. That's a long time since nineteen ninety since two thousand thirteen english two thousand thirteen with milwaukee in it's not that long for phoenix but I mean i like the devon booker a draft pick. He was the youngest guy in the draft that year. And you know. I learned from that and the tobias harris and so many guys that you're like it really good but they're only he's only held. Oh that's that's that's different so let me just give you a couple of things that i find interesting. I thought houston did a really good job. jalen green. Who i personally i k- cunningham better all around but you do need guys that can score and this guy can score and he is. He is improved during his year with the g. league night like he's a bucket freak athlete. Who's becoming a better shooter. I don't know about decision. Makings in big games. You're not gonna play a game for a couple of years with the rockets doesn't matter you. Got the second best prospect on the board. A wing score. Who's a freak athlete. I like it but then they got sanguine who alpern sanguine who's eighteen years old was a a machine scoring in turkey a very very high level. I thought he should have gone sooner. You know and then you look at what else they. I like their whole draft The interesting one is oklahoma city. Were they got josh giddy and giddy left-handed kind of a one two three four tremendous passer. He's kinda got that funky unorthodox smart. Not joe ingles. He's more of a playmaking guard but he's not crazy athletic. But here's the thing like those guys work in the nba. They do luca. Donncha is not a great athlete. But he's a great basketball player and i. I know i sound like i'm contradicting my subject. Got jalen green. Like they're different. Jalen green has won a defensively. He should be lock you up and make some plays with athleticism offensively. He should be able to score. And but giddy is a guy who can score some can make everybody else better like he's for young kid really skilled really smart and big. And it's just interesting. What oklahoma city chose to turn down in order to take josh giddy. I think those are the houston and oklahoma city. Both in rebuild mode really interesting and then trait. Kedah's chance to be special. He is a penny hardaway. Two point oh to me and people who remember how good penny hardaway was that is.

We got like super rowdy in their food. Everywhere in coach clocks down to our table and he gets so mad that when we we go back we actually had to go to like these like finishing school classes. Shwedagon like we had to go and everybody had to get a coat and tie. We had to learn how to sit at the dinner table. We had robber at like proper etiquette and all these other. They were like this is crazy. Why are we doing this so stupid. Why we this and then you know like again. Twenty years later you start to get college. Experiences isn't just about playing the game and trying to become a pro. It's but all these other things that you learned that like your parents don't that not everybody's parents have time to teach them or have the financial resources to teach them right or or or you're you're in a completely orrin environment you know and you have to be able to use your basketball in order to open these doors to you. So it's amazing that newsy right now napa court had those nice suits right. He's a jay reich guy like those guys always always clean yes always clean clean shaved Good ties man. I had so many like good. Conversation is so funny that you brought up the a etiquette class. Because i remember in. I remember seeing like soup for the first time and of course like at home. He was a senior but he was like finishing up his classical for graduation. He he there was this So the cad ca. Had this disliked this board. It was like a form where like a lot of each who had their own form is just people right in opinions on the season sometime. Go there for motivation at that played bad news. Always somebody talking crap about me on there and one time who showed me like a. It was like a entire form about those support and it was like coastal cora. Getting ready to go to fordham. He's lead hostage-taker sheriff's a whole forma. Didn't he was talking about it. But i didn't know him surena and we were still having our own. Our postseason works at that time so it was kind of hard to understand that there was. These are just rumors shoe. Fertilizer if you're a long-time listener of the show Daniel, know very well who frankie's and he was almost sorta like a co presented not just the engineer he always had a little really wonderfully finding things to say on that program. So we were having a bit of a conversation in facebook private messaging was trying to sort of work out what his musical interests were. An album that we had in common that we both really loved was from lighting eighty, the album duke by Genesis. Now, this album sorta stands a little bit problematic in some people's cannon. They'd member of Genesis because this album was the very last remnants of them being prog band with some very strong doses of pop music. It's pre Phil Collins taking over the ID's bucking guided river. So the album may be. Overlooked, by some because it's Phil enough for some is not enough like the early genesis like Gabriel Era Genesis or Steve Hackett Air Genesis, and it's not enough later genesis when the became purely a pop band this is just right on the cusp right in the middle and for that reason, I think is probably my favorite genesis saying that right here, and now a lot of people might say, well, we'd. Like the lamb lies down on Broadway we locked foxtrot good luck to the great albums but this is my favorite I'll be looking to see whether this is frank's favourite. We should have a wonderful discussion about that in November. So please remember to tune in. You can find us on all the usual sorts of places, joins already ns at the beginning of the show or go looking for us at Panton. PODCAST DOT COM and check at any of the other wonderful podcasts in the Pantheon podcast network some really terrific shows there for you to listen to okay look after you solves being nice to each other the next few weeks again to be very, very challenging for whole bunch of reasons. So please be nice pleased Ikea Starting Fahd on the Internet it's really not worth it and if you're walking out in The straight plays where a mask.

"The first. This is really melancholy, but on the other hand, I also see maybe as a hopeful song, it's like well, these things are going wrong in my life, but I have ten thousand reasons to stay alive or to be alive rather than I'm GonNa make it difficult for you to give me reasons to stay alive appointees. Thousand covers the whole gamut of personal emotions joy. Maybe some little resignation to out net melancholy is that you as Charles Jenkins Songwriter. This is what I do. I'm writing a story here or is that you reflecting some part of yourself? It's a little bit more basic than that. Sorry work with what was what was happening was was flying down to to teach songwriting are was kind of flying fly out for about six years down a Sunday afternoon and I teach all day Monday all day Tuesday economic Tuesday night and I had the success accommodation just around the corner from the uni literally victimes or this old college, the sequels and holes in. It was freezing and anyway so I would get to the cottage drop-off my bag walk around the corner to the Union pick up an acoustic child. I had put aside a walkout, bring it back to the cordage and seeing really loud because I couldn't do that in mill in a flat in Norman and you can get people pissing upstairs. As what happens in flat? So I didn't realize slicks mysolar writing processes upon the entire walk is sometimes you're writing a song. Let people do basically occupied thing over and over and over and over until to. Get there. So here I am in Hoban and I'm not worried about the neighbors. So I wouldn't just Singley really loud bets with him but came about I could sing everybody got the I could seem really loud same with I'm a white via Dan I could sing that really loud same with expensive. Thank you. Song Look I think a lot of them were written after the operation on know the on look I think the one that stems most from the operation is. General Wear and tear Canada happier. "Back to episode one, hundred, thirty, nine of love that album podcast and I think this is the first time I've had a musician come back for a second go round on the program I mean I've had a lot about the in his talking about favorite albums. But the first time I've had a musician comeback to talk about his own works I guess I didn't suck too much last time I'm talking about the. Wonderful Singer Songwriter bandleader Mr Charles Jenkins Aka Chuck Jenkins Willoughby Charles Little Chuck Brand in kkob me our let's go with shows like I will do that. Well compared to the program. It is lovely to have another chance to speak with you saying that you have gone and released an unexpected trait for US music eleven fans in Melbourne with the new album. No weapon that love. So congratulations on getting that scream hands album. Instead in years of head now month or two to live with into my ears. It certainly cents songwriting wise way to go China Liftoff, and yet you've released a lot of other music in that time with the Chicago's and you've had a hold of other life experiences that would have changed you in the last thirty years. It becomes songwriting mentor. You've got yourself a master's degree in songwriting or lyric writing which I want to get. To in its own right and as you mentioned in the film that WanNa talk a little bit about later run that you had an aneurysm in the last few years. So all this I mentioned affected how you've gone written songs but musically, the album dust still seem to Santa made like a beautiful continuation from the good China and this isn't even taking into account yet what Doug and small and Marcus would have been doing the debating. Did you consciously approach during this new group of songs in a different way to how you gone recorded for the ice hands before physically Mars. Thanks for having me back show. It's the real who the appreciate your time you'll research already is to be admired. Let's see. I was surprised. It was saying is I didn't think it was that long together a few as in non squamous go together Record for nineteen ninety something should we did a twenty th anniversary on Arctic we'll say even be dany anniversary knife. So we will plane and we started to him at his record Hueys Guard and. I think in two thousand, seventeen myself Chevallier's put out a radical last holroyd..

"You don't need me to remind you what that's all about. But to shining lights at the moment one is that it's been announced that my state of Victoria is hopefully on its last few days of this extra strong luck Dan we've been doing it really hot Dan he hopefully some optimistic signs about being able to go well, not back to. Normal as it was, but at least having some of the restrictions reduced. So that's very, very exciting and the other wonderful thing that has actually happened this year that has given me so much optimism was an unexpected trait, the new album from the ice cream hands no weapon loved I hadn't actually released a new album in thirteen years. Of course, the members of the band had all been busy doing a whole bunch of other things most particularly my guest for this show Mister, Charles Jenkins with his band Charles Jenkins in the Chicago. Now, I actually spoke to Charles once before on this program. Back in December of two thousand and thirteen labeled as a bonus episode but became at I think in the same month as episode fifty, five of the show. So if you WANNA go back around that time to have listened to that original episode of you have naturally caught up with it yet but the ice cream hands for those who initiated that band that give pop music a really terrific name if you know me or if you've been listening to this show for a while or you've been looking on the facebook page for love that album. Favorite bands to ever come out of this country have been weddings, parties, anything and ice cream hand. So really quite a treat for me to be able to talk with Charles not only about the album no weapon but love. songwriting things because that's what I like to talk about and I get the feeling that Charles also likes to talk a lot about songwriting into pleasure that it gives him. Now one stike that I make early on in the pace at you're about to hear I opened up saying that Charles is the first musician to return to this program to talk about his work and that's not actually getting credit. We've had Steve, a Los Lobos, a number of times on the program. So Charles, you'll the second musician to come back and talk about his work on this program but huge fan of you both. Okay. Joe's going to give you the contact details. Hey, you can email me hey, can join facebook group for love that album postal. Your thoughts about music would love to see what you have to say about your favorite albums at the moment or just some contentious music issue. We need a few bowl contentious music issues because people don't argue enough on the Internet. That's what I say after that will go straight into the view with Charles and following that I'll be back to talk about what will be on for next month's episode November Twenty Twenty on episode one hundred and forty of love that. But right now on the show I got a dusty. Oh, pile of vinyl records sitting on my floor. We hope you're enjoying the shy.
