Yeah james shields was like never mind you know what. I'm you know what i thought about it. And i'm okay. Here's one this one really got me. I guess andrew jackson was very famous for dueling. Lots of the sky experts placed his number of duels. Maybe as many as one hundred hundred was andrew just pissing everyone off. You're just pissing everyone off. Everyone wanted to fight him. His most famous was with charles dickinson. Not to be confused with charles dickens. The right i was going to say did you see my look on my face. I was like wait. Wait what yeah. No charles dickinson. He was a horse breeder. And i guess. These two guys hated each other dickinson accused jackson of cheating on a horse bet and he challenged jackson to a duel. Jackson was like. I'll be there the weapons pistols. But here's the thing. Dickinson was like known to be one of the best shots in the nation. So i don't know why. Andrew jackson picked pistols. But he did. I think maybe it was just. I don't know some swagger something right so they show up they do all yeah dickinson. Got off the first shot. It hit andrew jackson in the chest. He's bleeding from the chest. Okay all accounts are that he like held one hand to the wound lifted his pistol fired at dickinson. His pistol misfired. It didn't shoot. Oh so andrew. Jackson re cocked his pistol fired again and killed dickinson. This was very controversial. Angela in the rules of dueling. You only get to fire once. That's what i was gonna say. Aren't you one and done. And i know nothing about dueling. But.

Hello and welcome to this day in esa teric political history from topi. My name is jody abrogates. This day june tenth eighteen forty five. It's the funeral of former president. Andrew jackson and you know what sometimes i liked it. Just outsource my intro. To accounts of the time. So i will now read the account of one person in attendance. The reverend william menefee norman. So reverend norman. And i quote before the sermon and while the crowd was gathering a wicked parrot that was a household pet got excited and commenced swearing so loud and long as the stirrup the people and had to be carried from house. The presidential parrot was excited by the multitude and let loose perfect guts. Cuss words people were horrified. And awed at the birds lack of reverence and quote injure over. Let's talk about this here to discuss. Andrew jackson's cussing parrot are as always nicole. Hammer of columbia and kelly. Cardi jackson of wellesley. Hello there hello. Jody hey there. I did kind of want to just do a string of curses Yes unlike the cat curses for later in the show. But i suppose we were talking before the taping here This might be our first episode about jackson and kind of Not really about him. But let's do a little jackson one. Oh one Kelly what are we need to know about him. And i and i suppose his death and sort of painting the picture of this moment when you know a president dies. It's a big deal. But what are we looking at here. Oh so this this is wild. So this is during the days of duels duels. Were kind of a big thing. And so Andrew jackson challenges a dual to charles dickinson. Charles dickinson sort of insulted. His integrity insulted his wife and so they prepare to them and jackson waits for dickinson. To sort of take the first shot. He shoots him and hits him in the chest one inch away from his heart and then Jackson returns fire and shoots dickinson in his chest and a wound. That you know Kills him but it's interesting because the bullet that was in lodged in a jackson's chess actually eventually winds up killing him. As well he dies of of lead poisoning and this death of course leads to the funeral and the funeral leads to the it and so forth but we have a double double death in this duel. Here dies much later than dickinson does but but it all started with the dual. I feel like this is an important point right. That dual happens in eighteen zero six. So in between jackson. Getting shot and jackson dying. He becomes president. He lives for thirty nine years. So the dual definitely killed him. It just took a really really long time. Yeah eventually you know. It's not until many decades later but people do realize it was led from the bullet that eventually causes his death but yes he dies in eighteen forty five sunday june tenth. Is the funeral. Three thousand people attend anything else. We need to know about this stately of understood. We just talk about this swearing parrot. Ask so much uncover here. This parrots name is pull p. o. l. l. is that named after the way in which she take political temperature of citizens. Po l. l. Or is that short for poly. I just think for andrew jackson. It's short for poly right. He was outsider man of the people. He's not somebody who listens to polls somebody who who is heart and his his his his slowly. Degrading heart willing with latvia cracker. That's all well. Polly wants a fucking cracker in this case. So okay so so. We'll call her paul. I guess we actually don't know for sure whether it's paul or paul but will caller. Paul paul is an african grey. Parrot jackson bought this parrot as a gift for his wife and his wife was kind of like other. You should be the bane keeper of this patch. This pet seemed to not actually be a very popular creature in the household from the beginning. African grey parrots are actually Some of the most intelligent animals on the planet they can learn up to a thousand words. vocabulary they can use words in context which i think is also kind of savvy and then you know. They have the mental and emotional capacity of a five year old child. I mean when you think about what this animal can do it. It's quite remarkable so as the parent of human creatures who are in the five year. Old range do you think that says more about the human equivalent emotional..

Graham Brown: How To Influence, Engage, And Create Change Through Storytelling
"In my leadership in the exponential era book one of the storytelling techniques. That I teach in workshops and I share it in the book is the three box. Transformation story inspired somewhat by Charles Dickinson Christmas cow. But I want to go into that just now because Christmas is already passed but just know that there are three boxes and this is how you can tell a story. A good example is when I came to Singapore and I moved to Singapore from Japan two years ago. I could have told people what I was doing there. People ask me. What are you doing here? Graham why are you in Singapore? I'm Ron and tell them what my job ause. I told him what I was going to build you see. I told them that. I came to Singapore to build podcast studio and a podcast business and that Saturday after I moved to Singapore. I put the call out linked in and said I'm going to build a podcast. Judea if you WANNA come along and help me build this and up the acoustic tiles and put in the wiring. Setup the microphones Akon pay with anything apart from kindness memories. Good Times a beer. And a whole bunch of people turned up owning youtube people in Singapore at the time but twelve people turned up to help me build the studio. And that's the point. That's the power of story if I said to somebody when they asked me. What are you doing unless said Yeah I do podcasts. It's a missed opportunity. Robin tell people what you do. Tell them what you're going to build. When you tell stories about you business you can break it down like that. Break it down to three boxes past present future. Let's have a look at those. It's very simple. If you want to tell people about you'll business why you hear what you're selling. Break it down into the three boxes. And if you WANNA go deeper into this cycle the exponential leadership book which is free by the way you can go and get a xl dot org. But I give a plug at the end of this podcast anyway. So you don't forget it for now past present future past. Where have you come from? What is the mindset that brought you here and what is the mindset? Also that holds people back present. What is the shape of the business that you all today and future? What is the shape of the business that you want to become now? You may think this may work for for example. The startup she does is a fantastic sales tool for start of but also works with multi billion dollar enterprises a great example of this. I've seen Tony Fernandez. Who is the CEO of Airasia when he talks about the future of the quote Unquote Airline? He doesn't talk about in the context of we're an allied. He uses the equivalent of the three bucks technique which is passed all is the mindset. That's holding his back. Well the mindset. That's holding AirAsia. Back is we're in allied. We sow tickets. We sell seats and yet if they want to grow they can't go on with that mindset they have to change it they have to even sell competitive tickets. They have to sell whole bunch of other different services ancillary services everything from music to food president. What's the shape of the business that we all today was the structure in which we need to innovate well? We're an ally but yet we have this ecosystem of partners we have venture fund that's funding these policies future. What's the shape of the business that we want to become? We doesn't talk about becoming a better airline. He talks about becoming a digital to travel platform. So maybe you hear Tony Fernandez Talk. He tells the story of Airasia. Tudo which is the journey from being an Anna sold tickets to a digital travel platform. Because you know the problem is this is that the future doesn't belong to the airline that flies the most plane but the travel company that solves the most problems unless what it's about storytelling is about sharing the journey of you and your business why you hear and what you're trying to get to and you can use storytelling everywhere. You can use it when you sell when you post on social media. So if you look at some of the headlines from last year, there was a belief that that one win would change things forever. Last year the day of that victory. I it's amazing because this time of year right now is about a hope for the instability tournaments, Sarah. And and I was thinking about this because it comes at a couple of different waves hope comes in a couple of different spots here for two teams for two groups of teams that are in completely different parts of the bracket. When you're filling out your bracket, there's two fan bases groups of fan base is right now that have a ton of hope there's the sixteen seeds that for the first time have what I would call false hope right for the first time ever because of last year because his sixteen in UNBC upsets Virginia, sixteen pizza one the conversation. We all said couldn't happen. You know, you just check that we we ever year. We're like, you know, what a two can beat a fifteen but a one never beats a sixteen. That's now gone. So for every group of of fans out there that are looking to sixteen they're looking at they're saying, hey, you know, what you NBC did it last year? That's there. So there is even if it's false even for sixteen seeds. There's a reason to watch the. Right now, is it sort of the the moment they that gets everybody. And we'll get back to my trout in the megadeal in in major league baseball in just a few minutes. But I want to I want to drill down on something. You just said about hope because to me it's a little like the lottery like thinking about how many people just lined up, and they'll stand in line for hours to buy lottery team attacks on the stupid when his kidding. When arteries great congrats everyone who plays you're gonna win. Wow. But I was love the fact that people won't play until it's like five hundred million. No, I didn't need two million. But I'm in for this. Well, no, but but there's an element of ice. Somebody's got to win. You hear it all the time. It's like what somebody's going to eventually win. Why not me? I think that all it takes in the world today is this little tiny. Hey, so you're telling me there's a chance like that. That's all a fan base needs to look at it and say why not us because I haven't dumber theory. It is. But you're saying oh my God. I mean, you NBC I wasn't saying anything about you NBC a year ago tonight. None of us will had one four games total three years earlier than that. I mean, that's just that's stunning. That is it's stunning. And it creates sort of false hope now the opposite of also is real hope in this in this equation in my mind, and that's the other end of this bracket because I believe no matter what they yourselves right now. The dukes gonna win the championship walking away. I believe that there's a real expectation near my mind. Did there are seven maybe eight teams that win the win at all this year. I mean, I look across the. Board at the one seeds it, and I mentioned it earlier like what North Carolina did with Duke. But also look at Gonzaga. They've already beaten Duke this year Virginia has played incredibly, well, although they've lost to do those are just your one seeds, and if any of them won the national championship. I wouldn't be surprised. So I think that when you look at the top there's a lot of reason for hope for the top ones or twos. There's a lot of teams there. They can win it all well, what's interesting about. This is even though Duke is so heavily favored in terms of what fans are betting on and believing in. I think last this last night this morning at four to six PM when we were doing the marathon. It was something like forty one percent where already in on Duke getting the win. I think even though feels a little top heavy in terms of dukes chances. There's also a wider array of teams that you can see winning it. It's just only top teams though. So that hope doesn't extend past the ones in two seeds to me. But there are a number of one and twos. That I think have a real shot. And so we play the game that we sometimes play on this show of how many teams do you need. And that's how many teams do you need to have to feel comfortable that you have your winner. In that group. We're going to ask you guys on the one eight hundred flowers dot com Twitter feed at sarahspain at Spain and Fitz at Jason Fitz. How many teams do you need to be certain that you got the winner in there? I think it's a bigger number than usual. Even though Duke heavy favorite for me. It's seven I mean, I sat down and looked at it. And the quickest way I can tell everybody that's Duke, Virginia, North Carolina, Gonzaga. That's all four one sees I could see them winning and of the two seeds. I do believe Tennessee can win at all. I believe Kentucky can win it all and just because I've stopped. I'm gonna stop discounting. Michigan state. They find a way to to win constantly. I think they have the toughest rope. Because if Duke were in or sorry, Michigan state, we're in a different bracket if Michigan state war, for example, playing in the west believe Michigan state would be headed to the final four if not the championship game. So I believe in Michigan state enough to put them in that list. The only one in two that I don't believe enough. And is Michigan. And frankly, it's because we haven't seen enough consistent ability to score from Michigan. I don't love Michigan shot in this tournament outside of that these seven of the eight ones or twos, I can see winning national championship Michigan, as you know, as my college football bachelorette pick, and so because Cornell isn't in the tourney this year. I'm I'm standing for Michigan. So it makes it tough for me to pick against them. But I haven't seen and a lotta times it's that MSU matchup where they get ahead. And they just blow it that gives me some real pause with them. But you're right. There is a bigger crew. I'm gonna probably say seven the same as you in terms of do I feel confident that the winners in there. We'll put the pull out on on on Twitter, and you guys can answer and tell us your teams as well. And I could see six if you wanna take Michigan state out of the conversation because of the draw that they got. But also think that if you can look at the bracket and say man, there are six or seven teams that I think can win the national championship in a year. We're Duke is his favourite as anybody has been in age. Ages that says something about the health of the top of college basketball. And I think this is going to be an incredible tournament because of it. That's why I'm pumped for because above and beyond the false. Hope the real hope is amazing in this one coming up next. Mike drought gets a megadeal is he just going to be the Anthony Davis small-market star will answer that question next Spain infants twelve.

"Any person will give him to the amount of three hundred and the ad was signed into Jackson. Yeah. Yeah, that's not good that that's hard to read. Good. Any era hard to contextual justify that, but, but it also doesn't feel out of character from what we learned about the guy. I mean, this is a man known for duels as a hard ass is it who joined the revolutionary war thirteen lost his whole family clearly didn't take well to feeling slighted, you know he'd draw down just about anybody didn't take well to feeling deprived of something he felt was his. This is kind of guy you'd bump into bar who'd want to try to fight you on the spot because you disrespected him. Interesting guy do a suck on, but probably not a cool dude to hang out with have some beers. Yeah, maybe had a serious inferiority complex. Okay. So sorry, if I went a little on another tangent, but I but I just do get sick of historical figures being tossed in the fuck that guy pile for doing things that we're actually very culturally normal for the times they lived in now back to a duel, some that we can all get behind. Right. Actually, actually pretty psychotic, but it did happen in eighteen o six Jackson gets into what is probably the most notorious duel of his life. This shit is insane in may of eighteen o six, Charles Dickinson. An attorney who studied under US chief Justice, John Marshall, who liked Jackson bred and raised horses. The time publishes an attack on Andrew in a local newspaper saying that Jackson refused to pay a bet the he'd made a horse bet were two thousand dollars. Andrew, wrote him a challenge to a duel, which was incredibly ballsy considering Dickinson's reputation. Dickinson was considered to be a really, really good shot with a pistol the. Shot. This was a Steph curry of duels. He legibly already killed twenty six men in duels twenty six. He's the green river killer of duels. He's the Miyamoto Musashi of pistol duels. Can you imagine challenging some due to a duel who's already killed? Twenty six other men. All brave enough to fight and duels twenty six. Oh, and duels to the fucking death when you challenges savage hotheaded motherfucker. You know you're not going to be shooting pistols in the air. This is win or die. Who in the right mind, challenges, dude, no one, Brandon Jackson now really in his right mind by most people's mind standards, he was like the samurai. We started not long ago, right? Just death before dishonor. Check this out. This is the craziest part of this to me Jackson, knowing that he was about to do an excellent marksman prepared for the event by wearing an overly large coat to disguise his body's form and disguise. Whereas heart was located, he also planned to let Dickinson shoot him first. So that he could take time with aiming and fire it well-placed shot. Did you hear what I'm saying? His plan going into the duel with to get shot. I getting shot is part of this insane, son of a bitches plan, holy balls at the dueling ground Jackson, this plan after the order to fire has been given these two men facing away from each other spin around Dickinson turns first and shoots Jackson in the chest, missing his heart by only niche according to witnesses, everyone thought Dickinson and miss because Andrew Jackson just stood there. Like nothing happened after getting shot in the chest. Jackson takes his time before he fires studies himself, then delivers a bullet into Dickinson's stomach Dickinson collapses, taking home where he dies several hours later from his wound as for Jackson, the bullet hitting was too close to his heart to perform surgery on. He ended up carrying that bullet inside of him for the rest of his life abo- that would frequently cause him health problems caused him to cough up blood, a little reminder to the dual. He fought with Jack dick. That tough son of a bitch would live until the age of seventy eight. He carried that bullet and occasionally cough blood for thirty nine years. Unreal, just shrugged off a bullet to the chest. The doctor who attended Jack after getting shot that day said, I don't see how you stayed on your feet after that wound to which Jackson responded. I would have stood up long enough to kill him if he'd put a bullet in my brain. That is one tough hillbilly, pretty sure that did cried poison as some redneck. Tough-guy shit thug AKU shot my head..
