Maryland Panel Tasked With Investigating State's Lynching History

"Government backed commission of its kind is about to start investigating a harrowing part of the state's history. The Maryland Lynching Truth and Reconciliation Commission has set out to document the state's 42 known racial lynchings. The panel delivered an interim report to Maryland Governor Larry Hogan earlier this month. Charles Davis Jr is the commission's vice chairman. He joins us now to share the commission's plans and goals for this project. Welcome. Thank you so much for having me so tell us. Where did the idea to create this commission originally come from? Sure, most historical scholarship concerning racial terror lynching is centered in the deep South. And so you have states such as Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi and the like who get noticed for their history of racial tear. However, it's important for people to understand that lynching took place throughout the United States. I'm in. One of those states that is often overlooked is a state of Maryland. And so we call Maryland the middle ground in many ways, because it represented like most border states, a style that was southern but also had a progressive leaning on. So this oftentimes caused the state to be overlooked in terms of looking at the legacy of racial terror and tell us what are the primary goals of this commission. The commission is tasked with investigating lynchings that took place in the 19th and 20th century in Maryland, and we are centered and focused on salvaging the humanity, first of the victim's arm and then really laying out each case individually and hopefully bring about some semblance of Justice to the family members in the descendants of the deceased victims. Can you talk about a specific case that the commission is investigating? Right now? Sure. Yes, we're looking into the lynching of Matthew Williams, which took place in Salisbury, Maryland, in 1931, and so Matthew Williams was a young labourer who got into a dispute with his employer over discrepancies in his pay Following that his employer was founded. And Williams was actually hospitalized after the employer's son shot him and the lynch mob descended upon the hospital and drug him out of the first floor window. And the lynching commenced. And he was eventually taken to the drug to the courthouse lawn in front of thousands, along with local law enforcement politicians, religious leaders who did nothing. Eventually, as if that wasn't enough. He was eventually burned, and no one was ever held accountable. And no one was ever held accountable. So what does the commission do with a case like this? Today. Your ultimate goal I imagine is trying to figure out exactly what happened to Matthew Williams. Yes, And that is the ultimate goal. And it's important to note that we see the racial terror lynchings of old that took place in Maryland. Directly in relationship to the ongoing racial tear that we're witnessing in the United States. And so that's important to consider when we're looking at this and investigating this today in this fractured America that we're seeing, as relates to race relations on DSO. Yes, The truth is what we're seeking getting to the bottom of it, seeing who indeed was complicity and involved whether it was locals on state government officials because we believed that the descendents are owed this truth. Is the state. I'm in what we hope the citizens of Maryland and decisions of nine states learn from this work that we're undertaking is that truth comes first. And if we have the truth in there could one day possibly be Reconciliation. Charles Davis Jr is the vice chairman of the Maryland Lynching Truth and Reconciliation Commission. And he is an assistant professor of conflict resolution and history at George Mason University. Thank you very much for

AP Source: Chargers' team doctor punctured Taylor's lung

"Adam, Schefter just reported that tyrod Taylor. The reason why he did not get to play this past week in an intern air bear started for the first time against Kansas City chiefs at ended with hitting a fifty eight yard field goals and another fifty eight yard field goal. But a highly contested matchup between the chargers the chiefs it is now being reported that the chargers team doctor accidentally punctured his own quarterback tyrod Taylor's lung just before kick-off. Sunday while trying to administer a painkilling injection to the quarterbacks cracked ribs league and team sources have told ESPN. According to my sources. Adam Schefter says, now, this sounds terrible whenever you give your I read this and like especially the way she afterward it there the chargers team doctor punctured his own quarterbacks lungs, and that sounds absolutely bad and I was kind of mind blown by this believe it or not. We are given a heads up on this yesterday but we're not a big news breaking world I don't want to dive into the news breaking world because there's a bunch of Peron in sharks in. Going ever dive in there. So I asked around to a couple former teammates in friends of mine that have maybe gotten the same procedure how the hell can something like this happens this sounds terrible in the answer I got from everybody who has had this procedure done, which by the way is marketing, which is in the Novacaine. There's another Cain the mark which is. A numbing agent basically that gets shot directly into the area that is injured for instance, in this particular case, the cracked ribs. Now, the reason why it's done. So close to game time is because it only lasts four four and a half hours so they can't get it done in the morning because the numbness wear off, they can't get it done the night before because. Off they have to do it right before the game, which is why it was surprised to everybody that air bear was starting over tyrod Taylor, including Air Bear, and I would assume the entire chargers offense. Now, what happens though just like whenever you're in surgery now granted this happened to the people I talked to harm percents short happened to tyrod Taylor but just like whenever you go in for surgery for anything, they tell you the possible side effects this could. Potentially happen because surgery this could potentially happen. It's like basically this small print at the bottom of contracts like, Hey, this is all the good looking come from this but also this can happen every person that I talked to got a similar treatment as this said that they were told by the doctor that there was a chance that along could get punctured in the process because when you're giving a shot into the ribs, the long obviously is right there one. A. Hundred percent sure of tyrod Taylor. Was told that before we got the shock. I'm just telling you what I was told by people who got very the exact same situation here free. The bruised ribs are cracked ribs allegedly this is a much more common practice than even I knew about I've probably seen guys potentially get this shop before and didn't even know this was happening because I had nothing to do with me but I guess this is a pretty Common practice whenever you have a crab or bruise rib because it works like a charm I was told and I was also told that they shoot it a little bit above wherever the crack or the bruises in. Let's just settling in for four and a half five hours. You feel amazing. It's that next day you see more that night when it wears off that you feel absolutely terrible thus why I am incredibly happy that I played a position where no motherfuckers. where I could potentially need that. So that is what happened. We obviously tease piece for the punctured lung and the cracked ribs for tyrod. Taylor but from my knowledge of my research calling people that got a similar thing, they said that they were told that was a possible outcome. It's like point one percent that it could happen. But in surgery just like anything in the medical field, there is obviously a chance at something bad to happen it happened tyrod Taylor. I'm not giving an excuse for the doctor do your fucking job right? Especially whenever the people that told me, they said it's like a ninety nine. percent chance it goes well and nothing happens. So if you get that one percent and it's a failure, obviously the doctor did not do here and I would assume would have to answer for that. But that is what I've been told about this entire process. That is why it was such a shock to everybody including air bear who said he was surprised in ancient said, let's go and do this. So I think that is why everything happened the way it is I've been told I'm not a doctor they are not doctors but a punctured lung on punctures itself somehow I don't know that means I guess. Shout out to the human body for puncturing itself. He could play week to week is really could potentially play next week. What do you say day breaking news just from in report he's not GonNa play this week harbored is going to start. Okay. So here we go. There's big news not playing this week. So as long isn't completely on punctured and also. I think that is why because the way one down in him losing the starting job was actually the chargers fault that is why Anthony Lynn came out and said unless. tyrod is he's still are started because I would assume Anthony Len former player was like we gotta fuck this guy here. So whenever he was asked about who's the starter even after incredible debut by Air Bear in the game that they had against the Super Bowl Champs Anthony Lynn probably was. I mean, we couldn't say it obviously because worn one hundred percent. Sure because at the time they're probably still reviewing and Anthony Lane. Prada. Didn't get a chance to do a full checkup on house whatever the case maybe didn't and he didn't want to be like. tyrod Taylor's by the way. We're the reason he's out and he is we made this disease like they. Couldn't say that. So that's why I think I was confused by the way insulin handled the question I think a lot of people are potentially confused but now we know air bear starting this weekend tyrod Taylor not only has cracked ribs but also punctured lung hopefully that unpunctual quickly we're not doctors they have no idea but it is nice to know that this type of thing does happen has happened in the past we probably. Haven't heard about it for whatever reason, and this is something that happens on a regular basis with success. So it's not like they were going above and beyond to make him put him on the field. This is something that has happened in the past

"Scott I mean I mean really unbelievable like who they've been able to to play with the screen game and work inside out but back to your point about Carson Wentz. Because I look I'll say it. Maybe look I liked him as a prospect begged but then I felt like it went too far to the left where they were saying a MVP. And he's this and he's debt and I believe the last four weeks. We have seen what it. The epitome of a franchise quarterback is supposed to be a franchise quarterback is opposed to elevate those around him and the fact that he played with a bag of a AH misfits and miss miscast and cast off. And whatever you WANNA say for these guys they were all practice squad off the street and he's been able to win with them. I think it not only changes standing for him on the national level. I think in the locker room. He is clearly seized team. And those guys were talking. Maybe Ashley Jefferies did Nelson Aguilar's I. I think it's very easy for the eagles to move on from them. And to continue to empower their franchise quarterback because he's earned it and it's a perfect year. Isn't it because you cover this stuff all year. Long as everything I understand is great year to go get receivers great in the draft out low to leave until you're exactly all right. This is your year you make that move now remember. They play small ball as you pointed out. They played it with with with urgent daughter last week. Urge doesn't Klay Goddard. Is your main tight end. Who was the guy who came in and caught a touchdown pass who that third tight end? I'm sitting there going. I don't I don't even know right away now. Now we know who he is. I can't 'cause name to save my life right now and I feel bad about that. He's been in the League but he comes off the practice squad or gets voted in and he scores Jordan Rock Jordan Howard as opposed to play. He doesn't go mile. Sanders editor starts gets DINGED BOSTON. Scott yes all right anyone out from that school name or Boston Scott went. I think it was wasn't new. Mexico state was it. You Align Tech. You're right low-tech is where he went to school. So you put it all together and what they did doug. The Peterson keeping locker room together. The defensive guys hanging in there not pointing fingers at the offense in doing their jobs the offensive line going through and look. They lost Brandon Brooks again. They're they're all pro their pro bowl right guard. He goes out in this ball. Game phenomenal effort. Do they have enough to get off the deck again. This we can do it. I say they play loosen free again again. Seattle I think has more pressure on them coming from the west side and really thinking they should be a one or two seat. Laghman is terrific. Set A game. I mean you talk about the the. NFL Games the AFC Games. I'm excited to see the playoffs. But more importantly I'm excited to have more conversation with you during the run-up to the draft city. Thanks so much for coming on sticks Hey thanks for having me and you guys take care. Happy holidays. Everyone and happy Happy New Year. Everyone now that we're in twenty twenty. I still can't believe I believe that. And thanks for having me on you guys are the best appreciate A. CD thank you. So obviously everyone is excited walker. Weekend fascinating matchups Seattle L. Seahawks and the Philadelphia Eagles. Seeing to franchise quarterbacks Duke it out we'll see you man if Carson Winston continue to be the magician. He is poured rabbits out of the last four or five weeks. We'll see if he can keep it going and then on the other side you just WanNa see. You concur. Cousins get over the Hump Droop lease is playing at a phenomenal level. The connection he has with Michael. Thomasson Thomason Alvin Kamara pitching. It's GonNa be a tough one but it is an exciting game or citing set of games to watch speaking of exciting games Nabil. Jeff I know as a Wisconsin Fan you add your eyes fixed to the TV or did you go to the game did you go to the Rosewall. No I was Gonna go but you know I was able to get a better view. You just you just watch it from the house so you had to do the emotional. Rollercoaster of watching Oregon beat Wisconsin. Twenty eight twenty seven seven a game. That was really outstanding. Game game where I will say this. I feel like Wisconsin Might have been the better team. Wisconsin didn't play as well and Oregon showed Some toughness as some great that. I don't know if any of US saw that. They had and I think the game really comes comes down to the quarterback just in Herbert and not in the way they many of us thought that it would come down just in her was only fourteen for twenty one hundred thirty yards he. He added interception but man he had three rushing. TD's he had nike airs for twenty rushing yards and his thirty yard touchdown in the fourth quarter gave. The ducks talks to lead When I look at their performance I actually think this performance will help him when it comes to the evaluation process? And it's going to help them in this fact ultimately timidly when you're picking a quarterback you WanNa feel his presence embiid games and coming off the heels of the PAC twelve title game where you felt him kind of use more of his athleticism to complement his arm talent. I felt like he inserted himself into this game. As an athlete that three rushing touchdowns the ability to Puerto Ball on his own read getting to the perimeter he really energized an Oregon offense. There really was stifled by the Wisconsin. Defense and I think when evaluators look look at his performance. I think they're going to come away. Saying I like the toughness. I liked the grit. I like the presence in terms of how I felt his impact on the game and how I felt like he was really there for his teammates. And I love the fact that I can envision him doing more than maybe we could imagine him doing previously. I think this is a game. Where officer coordinators the head coach? We'll take a closer look at Justin. Herbert and they will begin to envision what creative things things they could do for him you on the other side of it. What was your take on? Justine her well. You know I thought he was very accurate. He was Atlantic you know. He showed off his athleticism when she hasn't done throughout the year as much like you said he displayed he can make the plays in the big moments one thing. I do worry about Justin. Herbert the next level dowd like to ask you is you. You know he had a lot of short throws do you think he has a big arm but he didn't show yesterday. Do you think he could read the progressions enough at the next level. I think that's the thing that's the thing ended. Everyone will question about Justin. Herbert is more than just a one or two re quarterback Before he takes off like in their system we haven't seen him do a lot of what they call pure progression Russian res where he may work desist from left to right based on how the route and the coverage dictates him to find the open man. But what I will say is this. We're seeing more teams utilize the stretch bootleg system that has been popularized by The San Francisco Forty niners Minnesota Vikings We can call it the Mike Shanahan. Gay Kubiak Kyle Shanahan System Bu- however you want to dub it. It is a system. Where if your quarterback is athletic enough to get onto parameter? You can do some very creative things. And it makes it very easy to build up. The completion percentage and to create big play opportunities for the quarterback. When I look just in Herbert to me he is a perfect fit in their system? When I look at Herbert I think I can liken them a little got a bit too? What drew lock was able to do for the Denver broncos drew lock being a terrific athlete a basketball player a legitimate basketball prospect in high school? a a guy who was a little all over the place during his time in Missouri where he joins and gets his opportunity with the Denver Broncos they go four one down the stretch and he looks like a difference difference maker. I would say that if someone takes that same blueprint and uses with Justin. Herbert I think just in her could be a high end quarterback he has big Arm Talent he is smart as a whip. He has shown that he is tough. And then you add in their running skills. I believe that he certainly could play. In one of those systems. That we've seen Jimmy Garoppolo and kirk cousins Excel and and with Ryan Tannehill also have a success in similar kind of system a thing. There's certainly only a path to build an offense that enables Justin herber to play like franchise quarterback now. Would you think about Jonathan Taylor. Because he has two straight seasons with two thousand rushing yards art on display yesterday. Would you think about him. You know like look. This is a guy I think. The thing with Wisconsin running backs they kind of get the label of being system guys because there are so many running backs that have gone through system and had success at the collegiate level and it has been a mixed bag when they get to the pros. When I look at Jonathan Taylor what I like back I like the vision I liked the balance physicality and toughness. I like the fact that he has shown this year more than other us that he can catch the ball out. The backfield appears appears to have really really soft hands. And so to me. I just believe he is the consummate pro. I don't know if he's going to dazzle or while you but in a rice situation Jason Man this guy is going to have a ton of production as a guy to Kinda plays behind his past plays into power base offense. He has only to me enhance and increase the stock. I think he's GonNa talk three running backs in the draft class. If we include De'andre Swith we Jaiqi dominance coming out Jin. Jonathan Taylor I think automatically comes down to what sal running back do I envision being rb one but look man this is a guy who definitely has first round talent to me. I I think he's been very very impressive. With the durability the production the reliability in terms of being able to show up each and every week he just continued to kind of solidify his status as the top running back from me. Now let's go to other game the Sugar Bowl Georgia took on Baylor. It was everyone is as we're on Matt Rule. What you think about that game? You know it was interesting game right because all eyes were on. Maverick I think for some people. This is the first exposure that maybe they've had to Baylor football. And when you hear may rule the rule the interest emit rule The New York giants and maybe Dallas Cowboys. You kinda wanted to see what the Baylor bears have done to create this conversation. Well what stood out to me is Baylor was overmatched by Georgia but Baylor was very competitive. I like the physicality like the effort. I like the energy that they play with breath and the fact that he took a team that was one in eleven and won eleven games in a three year span. That's pretty impressive to me like what he's been able to do doing when you we'll see if he elects to make the move. He has a nice setup and Bela and they've really been hitting it hard on recruiting trail. We'll see if he stays from a player's standpoint. All is one of quarterback Jake from Jay from has kind of been mentioned as a guy that could be. Maybe a borderline first second round quarterback When I see him play to to me Jake?.

"The NFL network. He is Charles Davis. How many drafts is on the NFL met for you? I believe it's twelve or thirteen him. Yeah. But but I never forget my first one and this'll be quick. But my win if I'm not mistaken. Okay. And you're now time does it. I sat up in the Rafter seats at sitting. Uh-huh. By myself. And the idea was that I might get some hits one hit. And you remember how it was in the old days day one draft. You you never got to speak wasn't we'd we'd do three rounds. And. No, we did all when we when we showed up for Radio City. We we would do I know I did all the way through to Mr. relevant. There's a two days a two day about saying the first day was your rounds one with one eighty three. And so I sat up there for rounds of one through three and I remember being up there. And I don't know if was the same draft or not because of time, I apologize. But that unfortunately for my friend Brady Quinn that was the Ted Ginn. And that was the biggest explosion of noise outside of a jets or giants pick. Remember because we're always anticipating those Radio City, and when they announced Ted Ginn, I remember being up in I feel like I was up in those those Rafter seats and place went I mean roof came off on that. When people went crazy and those who realize I was there for NFL network. What what what just happened? I was like I'm with you know, what just happened. And that was the draft for me where I realized for the first time that Roger Goodell being Commissioner meant all figurative vets were off on how things were being run entirely in the NFL too. Just because they had been done a certain way for as long as they've been doing them for the draft for the combine for the hall of fame for anything. Everything was now on the table near since Bert bell. Because because that was the draft when Brady Quinn was dropping and he got him. He went to he would see the shots on the screen and all of of Quin just in the Arron Rogers spot in the in the Thurman Thomas spot, you know, leeland McElroy could just go through the history of the television televised draft of of prospects who just sit there stewing in their own sweat with waiting for them to get the phone call, and he was sick and tired of watching Brady Quinn do that. So he went and got Brady Quinn. Out of the regular green and put him in his personal Commissioner green room where there are no cameras cameras. And I was a was a really cool move. And that was when it word came down to all the television partners as well. No, more shots of the prospects. Waiting for the phone calls for I guess fifth pick. Yes. Something like that. Now, we don't show many more to because them on the phone tips off to be getting drafted. And I love the fact that we get to that in people love, the intrigued people love, the the mystery and people at home are spending their time betting each other on who the pick is right. And they wanna they wanna debate it out. So I love the fact that the pick is organic for everyone in the of the draft. You know, it just every year with just seeing the way that the draft hall set up here Vegas is just going to be insane going from Nash Vegas Vegas. Actual next year is going to be as announces that for think it's in Vegas. I think it's been a so on hearing that their turn Fremont street. Into the into the well. So that's the idea. That's what I'm hearing. Wow. So anyway, long story short, though, is that it just shows you it is a television show they could do this draft on an encrypted website like a fantasy football draft and be done with it technically within a few hours. But instead, it's a television show, and it's an event it's an event that travels the people in in Nashville here are so fired up..

"It's the NFL draft tomorrow night. And I've got some news about. The coverage of the draft and what may happen tomorrow night? That is breaking developing as they say, we'll get to that in a second right here. Shawls Davis is about to join us. Good to see you Brockman. Hey, Richard, Mike del tufo, I'm glad to see that. All of you have made it into work today. Very late night of karaoke. King has your voice I'm hanging in there. Yeah. We took the music city by storm. Yes. And we will we will hit on that on three hour program. But again, Charles Davis, my colleague of the NFL network. He'll be on the set in in the famous Tootsie so establishment on Broadway with Steve Smith and Charles and and Chris rose on Thursday night. And then Charles will join me on on the stage right set up on the stage that they've built here on Broadway. It's amazing. He'll be with me and Joel Klatt and Daniel Jeremiah on Friday night and Charles will join a Steve Mariucci is part of the draft coverage throughout the week on the NFL network. He's in our number three. And then in our number two. We're going to have one of the gentlemen form of fortunate enough to have the call to be able to make a call a broadcasting call. We all in the business who are in the broadcast business are are in it. Because like. You watch it. We love it. We can't we can't wait for those big moments to unfold. And when they unfold you've just got a nail it. You just gotta go with the flow, and Kevin Calabro is the voice of trailblazers basketball on the television side of things and in the first round of the playoffs. The TV local TV still has coverage of it. Now that the blazers have moved on collaborative season is over calling the games, but he had a call all of Damian Lillard coming up with one of the greatest shots you will ever see in an NBA game. And I try not to be filled with hyperbole exaggeration. However, you wanna call it. I don't think you are. But what we saw from Damian Lillard last night from what we saw from him last night with time running down. Against an Oklahoma City thunder team that was pooped talking him crap talking him. You know, what I'm saying where it runs with hit share does. And that's all they were doing over the last several games game. Three the game at Oklahoma City took in this series. It was last Friday night. Russell Westbrook rocked the baby on him made a few shots and then made that baby motion, which you can take any way you want all of them are disrespectful. Yeah. Schroeder the point guard. In the fourth quarter tapping his wrist, which is Damian Lillard move when he takes games over in the fourth quarter. It's. Dame time. Sure as Lillard time. However, you want to call it tap in his wrist that was his move. So Schroeder was doing that mocking Paul George dunked with no time left in a game. That was already totally decided could have dribble. The ball out decided to jam it down home Lillard after the game said he saw all of that. And he took it all in. So that's the backdrop of Lillard coming up with a game winning series ending buzzer. Beating thirty seven foot jumper three pointer in Tigers game at the buzzer. To send home the opponent that has been crap talking him and the blazers all week and the three pointer he took from thirty seven feet away was over the guy who dunked at the buzzer in the game..

A whole bunch of says gets added when he throws. Yeah. You know what? I mean the Heisman Trophy winner a guy who will he is there if there's odds on my forty they're they're deaf odds on his height. What what what what Karla marries not his height? Is you can bet on who what the fastest forty time. We'll be about a definitely well anyone three. I have no idea. I couldn't have told you the John Ross is doing it that he'd be the one to do it. Now Mary says can run under four. He runs a four two and change. Then look out for spec. He's not the first pick in the. I mean, look we do this every single year with someone. I know we do it. And we did it with Baker Mayfield last year to Baker Mayfield on Wednesday. And then Thursday, he was the first pick. This is not the no matter how much you want to speak. Josh Rosen to the patriots. Good is not gonna do not happening is not gonna happen. You're not you're not speaking Josh Rosen to the patriots to keep trying. Done after d. But again, the fact that he if he clocks in at five nine and change five ten and change, which I think he's going to clock in at. It just again how much smaller can these guys. Go. Somebody was extremely well respected saying may the fact that Baker Mayfield the fact that that he's not six one. There's a reason why these guys have not been drafted in the first round, let alone I overall. And even when Charles Davis went through the whole litany of guys who have done it before that have now taken the pressure off of general managers to draft this guy a guy of this size. It's still on one hand he went back to who. He went back to France tarkenton me mentioned drew Brees Russell Wilson and Baker Mayfield. We're still not on a second hand. But are we getting to the world where we will easily get through secondhand? And then we'll move to our toes to start counting the number of quarterbacks that aren't that? But they do have eight delightful. Receiver in juju Smith user. Did you see him on on Valentine's Day tweeting out him looking for his Valentine? He is just all kind of delightful. Very fun. "The Boston Red Sox will begin the major league season with the team payroll of two hundred and twenty one million dollars. The cubs are next right now at two hundred nine million dollars. If I go to the body. Adam Tampa is at fifty one million dollars. They're saying we have a one hundred seventy million dollar gap between the highest paid team when they start twenty nineteen and the lowest paid team. Tissue begins. It begins there, and that's your answer. And that's your answer. Why analytics have played a part because there are teams that financially. They have to go by the analytics model because they just cannot keep up with the spending and bringing in the stars model that just does not work for them unless you draft well and bring your guys up early, and they are studs by years three four five and six you have no chance to bring in the free agent to match with those guys. And that's why the Olympics are coming into play the league average in major league baseball as it sits right now for what would open the twenty nine thousand nine season. The league average is one hundred and twenty two million dollars one twenty two point six. So that means you have teams that are seventy million below the league average, and it seemed that is one hundred million above the league average. And then then then we're talking about, you know, how we go about the process of equity, and we're talking about certain player contracts and players that haven't been signed is Boston. Assign Machado is Chicago assign Machado or Harper in the north side. Chicago almost certainly not the Yankees were talked about this for a long time. They would start right now. One hundred ninety three million dollars in the dodgers at one hundred ninety two million dollars. Just you look at the the disparity and the differences in the range of money's being spent is baseball healthy. Yeah. Baseball's healthy. But if you're in a market, you've got to find a way to be able to compete with the Boston Red Sox, and you're in a situation where you can cap out in the one hundred ten million dollar rains. You've got to be awfully creative and ten years for three hundred million for one player, especially if that is a player that you're not certain how it will develop over that time. That's money. Not well-spent the it's definitely not money. Well spent and I can't help it every time we talk about money and sports and the baseball talk. It's brought up and how they work their league. And some teams have. Fifty seventy million to spend in some teams have two hundred twenty to spend. I'm just I'm at a loss of words because when you look at the NFL it's clear that what makes it so great is the parody. And and and that's designed basically because of free agency and salary caps. And how everything within their business model says we're gonna pull the teams towards eight the teams that are better. You're going to lose your players because you're not going to be able to afford them in teams that are worse. You're going to have more money to spend you're going to be able to bring your team closer to eight and eight so everything talks about parody in the NFL. And that's what makes it so exciting. And in baseball with kind of exciting on the other end is that these small market teams without the money are able to compete, and and usually that's been because they've had to get creative. But now if it's because they can sign a big star and bring a big start a town that to me does actually make baseball more enjoyable to watch really interesting conversation look forward to next Charles day. Fox NFL analysts. Because when you talk about the parody, the NFL, I it it is true. I think it's why the sport is so incredibly popular, but the patriots have gone to the AFC championship game eight straight years and continue to be a regular visit of the Super Bowl. And we always look for ways to copy when teams are successful franchises program. Successful people copy. Nobody is found the formula to copy the New England Patriots. Also the signing of Kareem hunt yesterday in Cleveland, the decision Cuyler Murray to go to the NFL all of that on the table next with Charles Davis. That's John Kuhn. I'm Mike Heller were filling in this is the rich Eisen show college football NFL football the greatest time of year..

"It's Indianapolis off into line which protects Luxa well versus one of the best teams in the league. Which is Kansas City if they can drive the ball in that get sacked Kansas City's in trouble 'cause they don't stop anyone. Saks? Maybe knocked the ball free. The couple extra possessions for Mahomes. That's why I'm going Kansas City. And I'm saying the chargers chills. Davis you want to chime in on the whole Cuyler Murray thing that I had DJ on yesterday are are draft compadres. Yeah. Now that may ox left us. How dare he how dare he won't actually be an actual cherry manager. I mean Cuyler Mari first round selection. Do you think I mean DJ said five years ago three years ago, it would have been laughed at just because of how height challenged? He is. I mean, what do you think here Charles? Yeah. I think Jay's on target. I think if people going to study at closer than they ever have before. And it wouldn't surprise me. But I would have a hard time sitting here right now rich, and again, keep asking me as we get closer watch him more. I still would struggle with the idea that he'd be like the first pick of the draft or he would be my savior right now. I see a lot of plays from him still coming from moving around which is. Great. But what Russell Wilson have with drew Brees had coming out that we kinda missed along the way with ever making plenty of place from the pocket more. So than than what I think Murray does hear the screaming now. But this is you know, his place from the pocket against who. They were playing versus what I was spec. Now going be a little bit different. So I wanted to study more believe me, but I feel like this is really in a sent this taking place way too fast. But that's just me. I think the combines gonna start with a huge moment with Dave exactly with him being measured. Like, what is how just exactly how tall is? He. Sitting there rich. It's compelling television waiting for that news. What did he measure? Yeah. That's what they wanna hear. That's going to be the first that's gonna be the first order business. And then of course, we will all talk about his draft stock as if the intervening three months nothing to do with it. But you know, that's the way that's the way that cookie crumbles Charles. Thank you for the call. Always enjoy chatting with us. You know, Kevin Burkhardt enjoy you in him on the call. Do you wanna ask the poll question of before we sent him on on on his way? Yeah. Sure. Charles, which QB de most wanna see get their first Super Bowl. Ring. Philip Andrew lock off Dak Patrick Mahomes. Fill time time in the league presence around there. Someone asked me the other day the hall of Famer, and is it, of course, he's all they're like we had won the Super Bowl. And I said okay does that make Jeff Hostetler whole Famer no offense to Haas? But there's gotta be better criteria than that. I'd like him to get that monkey off his back. I mean Faust in one ear means. Not. Of course, I know that. Right. I know we down that list. Okay. "Welcome back to the rich Eisen show. E we discussed it yesterday. We talked about a Jim we talked about how Sean Payton was motivating the saints to win three football games by wheeling in the Lombardi trophy surrounded by two hundred and twenty five thousand dollars in cash, which is the prize pool. Money. You get for your bonus money you get from winning the Super Bowl or one EU member. We wondering how where do you get the money from? Yeah. The whole process logistics behind it fascinating to me. Yeah. We we we know where he got the money from. Okay, Charles, David loaned it to him. Charles davis. Fox Sports here on the rich Eisen show. Charles. I didn't know you had that kind of money just lying around. Listen, if I had that kind of money would be willing it into a room fifty three men who would like to add it to their own collection. 'cause I've come back. The that money would end up staying in there with the guys I went to school with. Well, I'm sure he would have kept a receipt and things of that nature the proper paperwork. That'd be like Rodney Dangerfield line. Right. Yeah. Chart telling that to the Bank. All said and done looks. We start over tapped ask. Yes. Chelsea was the gay stuff and the headline Visser, right? Did any of the defensive coordinators, especially the new wave defend a coordinators the league way in because if I have a dollar for every place, I go, and I hear all gas no breaks how we wanna play defense that would have been the headline all gays. No. Well, it's really all McVeigh Charles. Right. I mean because it it looks like retreat or thirty two year old line in. Here's the thing is he's not talking about his coaching tree. No. And I'm already sensing the backlash like what if McVeigh doesn't win tomorrow night and all these other right, and our our friend. Jim Trotter asked it today, and it's a legitimate question. And he made sure he clarified this has nothing to show. Hey, great respect for what he's done. Is off the chart, and Sean, and as you pointed pointing out rich, Sean McVay hasn't asked for this going around and touted hey, you guys should be hiring all the people that I've ever said Hello to just right? Just because when the Sean John to win the Super Bowl, what does that say? Well, that's not a fair question for Sean McVay just a second year in do. You know, what it says it says that he is absolutely turned Rams franchise around that they would have had a disappointing finish this year. But does not mean that their next several years are in the toilet. And on top of all of it. Just because other teams are giving unproven head coaches shot. Does not mean that McVeigh didn't come in with a certain skill set of his own that the Rams rightly saw and hired on their own right? And it's I don't understand what that sort of resentment is out there core here. Well, let's be honest about it rich thirty one thirty two years old gets his first head coaching job. There's already resentment. Then he has the incredible success. Your one. Incredible success. You're too has a chance to he's obviously Super Bowl. Contender resentment grows national profiles on him you watch real sports..

"Putting a helmet on put mcleese on every single one of them has a three game win streak left in them right now. Just don't know which one's going to be only one's gonna win three in a row. That's it from here on out who's got the three game win streak in. I don't know who that is could it be the one seed the two seed is we all know it's been since two thousand twelve seed other than one or two showed up in Super Bowl. It's been a while. That a team playing on wild card weekend showed up on the final weekend. Who's it going to be? Our poll question yesterday was the road team. It's gonna win it all who won that one. Right. The chargers did when he was all said and done chargers. It's right. Forty percent stoking your that's what I'm saying. Nothing to do with being angry. Anybody could win it in the NFC the Rams with girly and C J Anderson Goth just needs to put his feet in the right spot. Get his footwork, right? See it rip. It throw it. It's been since that Monday night game against the chiefs. We haven't seen that sort of Jared Goff get back their back foot. See it rip. It throw it. Can the Cowboys hot boys put enough pressure on him as they have for so many people since the middle of the season? Stop the run on the way to the pass and put the Bank thing on Rams the way that the bears did the way that the eagles have done. Cowboys absolutely can do that with Zeke and Dak certainly since half the stadium's going out and gotten Chris Brockman del tufo secondary. Market tickets. You know, keeping all my seats for you. Where does that status? Dan, right now, Chris which status is okay. And I know one of the game relax, but then there's other ones, but neither here nor there. Then there's the eagles in the saints, man. Why I think anybody could win these games are just absolutely see New England at Kansas City. I just see it. Philip rivers really come across the country, twenty degree weather with a team the most complete team in the NFL, admittedly, whatever the hell that means. They're really really good. They went on the road when they're not supposed to which means London east coast central time. But his Daniel Jeremiah said yesterday, he's been there in the booth for every one of these games, they had lucky weather. Balmy weather ever where they've been unseasonably warm weather, not this weekend, and it's Foxborough. It's the middle of January. It's the time when you're pre snap penalties turned into major problems. And you have no shot to win football games because something happens in Foxborough to you that hadn't happened in the previous weeks. Poof goes your opportunity crazy things happen in that building. Will the chargers really overcome all that? Maybe so. Charles Davis from FOX's up. I I'd love to get your your two cents. And all these subjects at eight four four zero four rich as well. What is our poll? Question is currently stands today. Chris Brockman, we're kind of work shopping at right now. We'll can ask me. You don't have one. No, okay. Okay. What we have too many. Okay. Very good. What else going with which quarterback? Do you wanna see win the Super Bowl the most breeze? Rivers Mahomes, Brady, lock foles. What about golf? Yeah. Young kids. Find plenty of time. Who else you leave it out right there?.

Goal this bonus money and the trophy to win three games eagles saints that is just going to be all kinds of. Wild. And as we all know saints played the divisional playoff weekend finale last year when they were all set to fly to Philadelphia to play for the NFC championship game. And then disaster struck in Minnesota. So we'll we've finally got the saints eagles match up that we were expecting last year just a year later, and it's in the Superdome as opposed to Philadelphia. Charles Davis is calling that football game. Along with Kevin Burkhard on FOX Sunday afternoon. Charles is first up on our program. Kurt Warner knows a thing or two about winning Super Bowl being MVP quarterback. I think he has I think his last career game was in the Superdome. As a matter of fact, when he got bounty is way out of the league. From not mistaken. He made his first Super Bowl win in that building against while. I mean, he tried to get his first Super Bowl when in that building against the patriots is I was in Atlanta where we're heading in the old building. So he's making his way here, which is a first all he does call into this program. He's never been here physically to our Los Angeles. He visits us every Super Bowl short. But we have our meeting for Saturday's game day morning. Divisional playoff week and four and a half hour extravaganza. The begins at noon eastern, but we'll still call him NFL game morning. It's morning out here in Los Angeles. We have our meeting up the road and on my, hey flying and fly. Just we're right by LAX. Come by. He's going to do that. Come to the coast. We'll get together talk some food. That was the voice I was using to start the show at the moon. The crown can the patriots, and we're not doing very well anymore and all my God. What are we going to scare their there? He's faking. I dunno. I am not never been more confident. Oh, where have you been the last few weeks happen really married here way to the divisional was true? All of the nothing was all true. How? This week on every single expert pundit is picking the chargers to outright win the game. What what what where? Were expert. That's fine pundit. It's pundit pundit extra ends in be a gigantic L for the chargers, by the way. Nice. Save try to turn the phrase good. Let's not focus on the extra end. It's go at the L. And you're gonna wanna eat a w use the Winston phrase. I'm telling you. I'm telling you, I told you. That the Texans. We're gonna lose to Philadelphia. The patriots. "And remember he's not walking in and talking eighteen to twenty two year olds you were in those locker rooms that person walks through that door matters, doesn't it? You know, we we act like it's just the video game Madden and Kenny draw plays. He's got a command the locker room and command respect both sides of the ball guys. From twenty two years old all the way to forty It's got it's gotta be the deal. And I just don't know that I it again, it feels like, hey, we can do it with. He's offense of guy we can make this thing work. I don't know if it's the best situation 'cause I hear that about all these college coaches in some of them can make the jump some of them. It feels like I'm just trading for the offense like Lincoln, Riley it Oklahoma. I think Lincoln Riley made the best movie could make which state Oklahoma absolute down the road could very well be an NFL coach, I think at this stage of his career he was smart enough to know himself and stay Pat FitzGerald a defensive guy. Maybe he could command it. I think that, you know, overall, probably, but I think he's a college coach through and through. Yeah. I think he understood that about himself, and he stayed others may wanna make that mistake if you're clip kings brain someone offered you a job. Why would you say, no? But to me offensively. "As a true. Freshman speaks to how the game has changed over the last decade when it comes to development of the young players, and you mentioned seeing these guys highschoolers up there at the opening and Trevor Lawrence. I mean, he was he was outstanding up their book. But I I left that weekend just watching for two days and watch these guys at seven on seven. I not you're not playing with pads on I I left there thinking that Justin feels even better. I mean, that's got to get you fired up. If you're Ohio State to know, you've got that level of talent coming in your direction. I don't think he lost a seven on seven game tournament. Is you know, they're up there playing game after game after game. I don't think Justin feels lost one up. There was throwing it all over the place in can move around. I both these kids are special we've seen it. Now. Trevor Lawrence, I think we'll have states going to see it here pretty quick with this kid to. Oh, absolutely. I think we are going to see it. I think the way that the game has changed in these guys being better prepared to be able to step on the field right away and play is a game changer. And you know, like is funny. We always talk about coaching in Xs and os and the like, but man, I had a coach told me this the other day when I was talking to him on the phone. He said you will never find a hall of fame coach who hasn't coached hall of fame players, meaning that when you want to win national titles, and you want to be a program that fancies himself as the elite, you bet acquire elite players, and I think the difference between the haves and the have not strictly comes down to the personnel. And I know we want to transition here to your conversation that you had with Charles Davis yesterday bought before we get to that. I'm like to hit you with breaking news on here. But we did it on the last time, I guess you will guessing lower. So I've got some more for you here. Because now it's being reported by our in Rappaport that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are focused on hiring Aaron cardinals former Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians as their new coach, the interest is mutual negotiations are likely to begin soon in the words of Ian. Here we go. I mean, but I think that's actually a perfect fit it. Here's why believe is a perfect fit for aeriens tourists going. They need to get James going. A lot of the comparisons day. We have for James coming out. Big Ben Rothlisberger who wanted to formative guys around Big Ben Rothlisberger. It was Bruce Arians. Bruce Arians was also around Andrew luck. He is develop quarterbacks particularly dropback quarterbacks in vertical passing game. He does a great job with that. When he looks at the Tampa Bay job offensively. They have weapons already on the outside. They have a playmaker. And Mike Evans have two tight ends in OJ Howard and Cameron break to have another guy that is emerging who's the other little young receiver of state God Pissy Godwin. So they have weapons they just need to get the defense going. And if he comes with who I think he's coming with entries bowls. I just liked the way this situation plays out. And who knows if they can ever get anybody. Can run the ball do some of the things that you'd like to do with the running game. Why can't they just jump back into the mix because this is a team that we've talked about being on the come. I think Bruce as is the right coach effort Jaamus. I think you need a grizzled heart head coach to get into finally play the way that we think that he could play. Our let me ask you a question here there was there was a coach at Arizona named Bruce Arians that had a young rookie running back at a northern Iowa who named David Johnson. If I recall buck, I think he played pretty well in that system. I'm trying to think of somebody maybe with similar skill set that might be agent. Oh, you thinking thinking this guy last year fresh legs Bill going to Tampa say tax. See that could you see that marriage taking place..

"I'm glad hundred Henry's actually playing because it's weeks ago. He was playing anyway, moving right along. Go back. And then you flip over to the Baltimore side if Lamar Jackson can keep his runs under fifteen. I think that's better for them. Because right now, he's playing single wing tailback. This is Tim Tibo two point more accurate getting football. But if you but he has twenty six carries guys. That's too many. I think the chargers win this game on the road because their defense will find a way even though it looks like it's Baltimore's defense it wins. It I think that the chargers defense with their offense healthy. Now, I think they go on the road and win this. Last thing we thirty seconds eagle eagles bears. It looks it. It it looks like it's going to be fulls at at quarterback bears. It made a lot of good quarterbacks. Look like bad quarterback. It's in Chicago. "And and and I don't want to turn this into a total manifesto black of black and white. What have you? But Josh also having been a head coach and quarterback guru with the Packers franchise it sees their windows shutting fast because of Aaron Rodgers where he is. If Josh comes in and says all the right things about what happened with the colts. I don't think that the Packers will hold that against him. They've got to get something done where someone is going to connect with Aaron and have a chance to try and win another Super Bowl reports all said done because I believe what thirty four thirty five TJ just so this stage. I don't think that it'd be held against him quite like it would with other people because he went back to a place that continues to turn out. Excellent. He's back there with Tom Brady. And what he says to them privately. We'll take care of business because I have a feeling Josh. You're smart enough to know the right things to say and fall on the sword right about? I think other people they wouldn't even get this interview. But this is big for Green Bay because their window is shutting bath, and they've got to get this done with someone to Aaron Rodgers gonna connect with respect and be able to run an offense that gives them a chance to win son McVay leaves Washington rest games becomes the head coach at around and literally turns jer golf from a bus really good player. Now looks like everybody's looking for that early. Thirty euro coach that Cain duplicate what he is done. Zach painters. Get interviews and other young ofensive, quote, unquote gurus is there a guy out there that nobody's talking about that can kind of come under the radar and land a job. That's a great question TJ because aired be enemy is doing that with Patrick Mahomes and probably not getting much credit for it. Because the perception is and I believe on Regan. Andy Reid is calling place yet. See so. So there there's there's an issue right there that in any other time he would be a guy that we'd all be jumping on because as you pointed out, Sean McVay beget neck Matt Nagy last year. The lead in calling plays in Washington. Well, look guy guy who won the Super Bowl. He didn't call place. You know, we're sitting there looking like Doug Peterson didn't call placement using city. He got coaching job in Philadelphia, and and and call place Super Bowl, but don't forget this. You know urban Meyer get is first job at bowling green. Never called play. So here's the thing. People have to keep in mind. You better have a guy who's got some presents. Teach. You can describe this better. Doug, you can describe it better because of the levels of all that you play. But you got the person who walked into the room manning, the commanding the room is not just a press conference phrase. It's commanding the room in all situations. Sean McVay does that his youthful age? So when I hear people say, he looked get Lincoln Riley because going up at Oklahoma. Let's go get this other guy does that I have that same presence that when they walk into that room, and and not just putting their knowledge. But when things get bumpy that team's going to respect because Sean went through a little few bumps this year. Yeah. It seems like Mike Tomlin commands room every time. He walked, okay. I listen. I agree. Let's let me get into the Tomlin thing Charles. I know you've read story we've talked about it all morning Antonio Brown. Big Ben one. Yeah. So Intel and for people are just doing happy new year to you. Charles Davis is our guest course NFL on FOX analyst TJ huffman's outta four Pro Bowl receiver. I'm Doug Gottlieb, this the Dan Patrick show. The story is in Tonio Brown got into it with with with Ben going back to mid week last week throw a football at Ben stores out of practice. And then does return tax doesn't show up the rest of the week shows up on Sunday game day and and wants to play and Mike Tomlin doesn't doesn't play them. So the question now is. Can you can you put the genie back in the bottle? Like, what do you do? Now. If you're Mike Tomlin who we all agree if you've ever met, Mike Tomlin, you're like that guy takes over room. Right. He feels like a feels like a head coach..

"And so you kinda gloss over those things at the time within when you reflect and look back on it. You say man, Marvin did a good job of not only helping us. Learn a game of football. What he was helping us in life is men. I guess then the question become. Win win wins and losses and disappoint season. Look, I mean, obviously any Dalton seem to have topped out as well. Right. Like, they got they got as much out of Andy as they could. He was he was Kirk cousins before Kirk cousins the thing would Andy Dalton in pretty much every quarterback. That's not Tom Brady. Drew Brees Aaron Rodgers, Andrew luck. And now looks like Russell Wilson Carson Wentz baby. You have to surround them with a great team. And he don't have to be protected. I in my me and Margaret talked about this Marvin loaves, Andy Don t j to the kid is so smart he'll change protection. So get us out of a bad play. These are things nobody knows like he's a coach like he is literally a coach on the field for every play. But things have to be you have to really give him an line. He hasn't had that old line can protecting. He has a great receiver. AJ? He has a pretty he's always had a decent running game. We'll good running backs. But if they can fortify that. Offensive line the being the fancifully they're solid Charles Davis gonna join us upcoming next. We'll get his thoughts on the coaching moves and whether or not he believes Josh mcdaniels should be a candidate after what took place last off season in Indianapolis. We'll get you ready for wild card weekend as well as a wild day of bowl season with judgments out. I'm doug. Golly..

"Just if you have to have a plastic covering on should not be outside. Imagined a women that got really cute dressed up. Gotta pass to cover on. Bottoms? Just for that night. They go out to a wonderful dinner. And they're like all right now. Let's go watch the ball drop. Let's cover our selves up with some was simplistic anyway, Rose Bowl parade is underway. We got a big day of college football will cover. It will preview it Charles Davis. Gonna join us course, Charles covers both college and the NFL for FOX when his thoughts on on some of these coaching changes and coaching firings in the National Football League. What it means? And of course, we have wild card weekend, which is upon us. We got the Dana Hoeger Sohn story, which is interesting. These West Virginia to go transfer to Houston. We have the Tonio Brown story were apparently he was a healthy scratch last week because he got into a verbal kerfuffle with his quarterback, Ben Rothlisberger through football, Ben Rothlisberger. And then no-show to practice shows up game day expecting to play and they sit him down. So we got all of those all of those things working, and yeah, we got a little hoop as well. To talk about. I wanna get into something. That that you and I haven't discussed which is the reemergence of Andrew luck. Were you Andrew luck guy before the season? I mean, I I like Andrew luck is a good quarterback follow there's a button there. No, no. No, no. But he just hasn't had the, but is if you you look at the quarterbacks that. Over the course of history NFL if done well, they've always had really good pieces around him. He has t y Hilton. But outside of that he hasn't had that complement the running game to offense of line to help them out or even a defense for that matter. And so it was I was curious as to how he would come back from injury missing entire year, especially which throwing shoulder and he didn't start off great in team start off great. But man. That they're rolling. And you you think about the that team in how young they are and how well they're playing it. It's only gonna get better from. Yeah. And so they get to go into Houston a place where they've won and a team that they feel like they gotta be like even when they weren't playing. Well, neither team is playing. Well, they should at least tied at home. Instead, they went for it. How crazy is that that when they're on their own forty three yard line. And I said at the very next day. I thought it was mistake. Like, you know, everybody has his like negative image of tying. But when when you're you're they wouldn't have won by getting a first down. They simply would have gotten a first down by getting a first down. Time was not a bad thing. And had they tied. They would have home field this weekend. I would rather taivon lose. Yes. But but that's not. That's not the way to look at. It was weird when that happened in after that they started to play better. Yes..
