Charles County Sheriff's deputies want to went to a home improvement store on Crane Highway at about 1240 this morning. When they got there, they found a woman store. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not been released. Investigators think the suspect broke into the business, stole the forklift and tried to get away by ramming through the parking lot and was run over. Deputies believe the suspect got away in victim's dark copper colored 2019 Ford Fusion. Do you the parking the parking lot. The suspect was shot and killed. And now we're learning what police believe led to his death. 30 year old Carl France's Braxton and district firefighter, assaulted his girlfriend inside their brines Road Town home according to the Charles county sheriff's office. She left and at the corner of sedge Moore place in Matthews road. She saw a man walking his dog, according to witnesses, Braxton came out as well and walked at that man aggressively and threatened him. Deputies say the dog walker pulled a gun and shot Braxton who later died at the hospital. The shooter was legally permitted to carry a gun was taken to the police station and released pending further investigation. Luke Luger WTO P news. Abortion providers in three states, including Virginia, have filed a lawsuit aimed at preserving access to the abortion pill mifepristone. It comes as the drug is threatened by a separate Texas lawsuit winding its way through the courts. The new suit filed on behalf of clinics in Virginia, Montana and Kansas is the latest legal action over that decades old pill, which is part of a two drug regimen used in most abortions in this country, a federal judge in Texas issued a ruling last month that would have revoked the FDA's long-standing approval of the pill, but the Supreme Court blocked that decision and other limits from a lower court from taking effect while the lawsuit continues, judges in the 5th circuit Court of Appeals will hear arguments in that case next week. And in this report, a doctor at children's national in D.C. explains some of the signs of fentanyl use in school aged kids. Last week, New York became the first state in the country to ban gas stoves in most new future construction. And two attorneys general in our area are weighing in on the topic now. D.C. attorney general Brian Schwab and Maryland attorney general Anthony Brown are among those who have signed onto a 21 page letter, asking the consumer products safety commission to address public health and safety concerns about gas stoves. Those AGs say that gas stoves emit too much air pollution and homes in that children are especially susceptible to asthma and other respiratory problems. In the letter, they're asking the federal regulator to implement mandatory ventilation standards along with performance standards that include a maximum amount of allowable emissions. The accusations by two city employees against John fell ciccio are being investigated separately. This, according to the mayor's legal counsel, who says the results will not automatically be made public, but both parties can choose to release the findings. Bowser says she's given her office of legal counsel more time to finish the first investigation, then it's allotted two months. The better together nonprofit is working with anacostia river church to connect job seekers with employers. The event will take place across 21 states and nearly half of all attendees typically receive a job offer on the spot. "The class of 22 was pretty robust in Charles county, Maryland, data from the Maryland board of education showed graduation rates in Charles county were about 5% higher for last year's seniors than the statewide average. Over 92% of Charles county students got their high school diploma in four years better than 86% statewide graduation rate. While higher, the Charles county numbers were down 1% over 2020 ones graduating class, north point high school was the top of the county with just shy of 98% of seniors graduating on time. There are some disturbing information in a recent survey of Maryland's youth. Middle schoolers are trying more substances and earlier, according to the Maryland Department of Health's 2021 22 youth risk behavior survey. 12% of middle schoolers in the state admitted to misusing prescription drugs in 2021, up from 7% in 2018, and initiation to alcohol is up with 10% trying it before they turn 11. There is some good news on the survey, though. The number of high schoolers using tobacco alcohol and marijuana is dropping. The survey also found the risk-taking was higher in students who identified as LGBTQ+. Michelle Morello, WTO news. More Narcan is coming to Arlington schools. It's part of the school system's response to a rise in youth overdoses. The drug used to treat overdoses will be placed in emergency boxes. Those boxes will be on every floor in middle and high schools. Superintendent Francisco Duran says the county has to address the root cause of student opioid use. We're spending a lot of time right now making sure we have emergency measures in place, but the conversations need to move above and beyond that and their conversations that need to happen in our classrooms, conversations that need to happen in homes, in our community, about really finding the best way to wrap around and support. The county is also seeking guidance on whether students can carry Narcan in school. Officials at the university of Massachusetts are concerned about a TikTok trend. This after 28 ambulances were called to off campus parties. Authorities say students were seen Saturday carrying jugs believed to be filled with a mixture of alcohol, electrolytes and water called blackout rage gallons or borgs. The binge drinking trend is said to be gaining traction on TikTok, officials at UMass say there were so many medical calls for student alcohol intoxication that agencies around the Amherst area had to step in to help. A local shooting in Indian head in Charles county, leaving two men dead, another wounded on Monday. It happened about 2 o'clock on Shelton court. There were three individuals who were either standing near a car in a car, there were gunshots, and then the vehicle took off. Diane Richardson spokesperson for the Charles county sheriff's department, two of the men shot have died the third is in the hospital. Richardson says exactly what happened is still unclear, but police are not looking for any other suspects. Right now, the scene seems to be contained to these three individuals. It appears that this is an isolated incident involving these three individuals. Several people heard the shots and called 9-1-1. Kyle Cooper, WTO news. The average response time to your 9-1-1 call for help has gone up among every county. So what's the problem here? The Montgomery county emergency communications center or ECC that takes 9-1-1 calls is according to a recent county council staff report chronically understaffed, and that's led to response times that have gone up the average is now 9 minutes and 20 seconds. The vacancy rate in the high stress jobs where one frantic call after another is answered is at 34%. The mandatory overtime is also crushing my staff. Cassandra only, director of the ECC says the long days made longer with overtime make recruiting difficult. Charles County Sheriff's office says it all started when a seven year old girl fell into the pool and her father jumped in to save her. But he was unable to swim. But basically there are signs that what's going to happen here is that this massive $2.3 trillion infrastructure plan of President Biden, whose many, many social programs will be broken up into pieces and voted on individually. Biden doesn't want that to happen, but that I think it's part of his initial deal making. Proposal, in other words, to come instead of the high end of what he wants, and then negotiate the rest of it, And I think that's what's happening. How do Republicans feel about that piecemeal process, especially considering the bad feelings they have after the rescue bill was done without their support? Exactly Well, there's still a lot of feeling to really obstruct this process along. A lot of Republicans do not want to give President Biden a victory. But I do think that there's enough in the whole notion of infrastructure and helping people with healthcare and with child care with education. So on that, I think the piecemeal approach does have some positive prospects here, So I think that that's really where it's going to go. A lot of people will be disappointed. President Biden is being pulled in many, many different directions Now. Bye. Liberals in his own party by centrists, Republicans, unions, corporations and so on. But that's again part of our normal process. That's what legislation involves, and I think that's where we are now, so it's not going to look like it seems now for for anybody. Maryland's Charles County welcoming all students back to in-person learning
"Of kids are returning in. Some of Maryland's most popular school district's Anna Rondell Howard in Montgomery are among the Maryland counties were students are beginning to return. Prince George's county students won't return until April. Many schools public won't have the majority of their students in classrooms until April, Charles County has finally made a decision about in person learning. The school board has approved Superintendent Kimberly Hills recommendation to allow any student in grades K through 12 to return to in person classes two days a week. Beginning April 19th Hill says. When kids come back, the schools will be vigilant. We are going to do testing for symptomatic individuals at school, so we have on hand. "Classes late next month, The county school board has voted to send their phase two students back to class March 22nd that includes special education, students, English language learners, career and technical education, students and Children of staff members. Public schools are closed. That's a change from a two hour delay. Culpeper County Public schools now closed at least less keeps on changing this morning. Keep it here in Maryland and Rondo, Carol and Frederick County Public schools are closed public schools in ST Mary's and Charles counties around a two hour delay. Now D C. Public schools start in person and virtual classes two hours late. And in West Virginia Jefferson County public schools have remote learning. The side roads in Howard County are a little Slippery with the main road seemed to be pretty clear cars. They're driving slow on Centennial Lane and Route one away here in Ellicott City. Longtime MD Senate President Mike Miller Resigns Seat, Citing Health
"After a career in the Annapolis statehouse that spanned nearly five decades. Maryland's former Senate president, Thomas Mike Miller, has resigned. The 78 year old state senator who served 33 years, a Senate president in Annapolis, Thomas, Mike Miller, announced in the letter. He's resigning from his Senate seat effective today. Miller said He made the move with tremendous sadness, but cited his health He's been dealing with prostate cancer in recent years and said he felt he couldn't meet the demands of another legislative session. Washington DC area schools buffer blow of failing grades — for now
"Confusion, growing workloads on multiple online platforms. All those things and the stress of life in a pandemic prompted the Charles County Board of Education to change its grading policy. For now, the number of kids learning failing grades jumped in Charles County schools, according to Amy Holstein deputy superintendent who called the data alarming and high school. We've seen a 72.7% increase and then number Of FC that were awarded for the first quarter and the numbers were similar in middle school. So the board voted to change the grading policy counting efs as a great of 50%. And by doing so there will be no affect on college admission, do enrollment or issues of lack of accountability. "ST Louis election official who worked at a polling place on election Day despite a positive test for the Corona virus has now died. That's raising concerns for the nearly 2000 people who voted there. ST Charles County, Missouri spokeswoman Mary Anger says that person who that person they don't know the cause of death, quite yet was an election judge supervisor at the Blanket Park Memorial Hall pulling site in ST Charles.
