It is a busy time at the nation's airport as millions are expected to travel by air this July 4th holiday weekend and according to AAA this weekend is expected to break records with over 4 million people taking flight and throughout the week though leading up to the weekend we saw cancellations and delays at a lot of airports and what happens if that happens to you and your flight is grounded? Zach Wictor is a consumer travel columnist for USA Today. He joined us to talk about the rights you have as a passenger. If your flight is canceled you are absolutely entitled to a refund no matter what the reason it was canceled for and whether or not bought you a refundable or non -refundable ticket that is the Department of Transportation's policy and airlines are required to give you that money back if you choose not to take them up on whatever alternative flights they offer you. With delays it's a little more complicated it gets into questions about what's causing the delay and different airlines actually have different policies individually what you're entitled to both based on the length of the delay and based on what's causing it. really So you need to go to the airline in that event but in many cases especially with the extreme delays that we saw this week airlines will kind of go out of their way to compensate customers whether by giving them vouchers to hotels or meals and obviously working to rebook them at no extra cost as well. As you mentioned a lot of the airlines do for go the travel credits or the vouchers in these situations but what about pushing for cash refunds? How does that work? Yeah so again it's really up to the airline if it's a delay they're not required to give you a refund under the current regulations but with cancellation they are definitely required to give you a cash refund so it's important to know that you are entitled to that if you choose not to travel And there are discount sites out there to get airline tickets. you think Do people should be using those searching around on those sites? You know I personally am always a little hesitant to them. use I prefer to book with the airline directly. Obviously you can find really good deals on the discount sites but you don't get necessarily the same level of protection and it can be an extra layer of complication if something does go wrong with your flight because if you book through a third party you can't always deal with the airline directly to get rebooked. Sometimes you need to go through the platform that you booked on and so especially when things are looking a little hairy like they are this summer I usually recommend booking with the airline directly if you can.
