"Listening to WTO P and E was three 53, it wasn't a police officer, but rather a woman riding on a silver line train who disarmed a man with a gun inside the Potomac avenue metro station last week. She tells WTO's Meghan clarity what happened when she confronted Isaiah trotman, the man accused of killing a metro mechanic and wounding three others. Sitting in the first row of the train on her way to work, chante trumpet says that first she noticed a man lying on the platform as they pulled up. Then another man with a gun came through the doors and sat down right in front of her, placing his gun in her line of sight. He sat down and he was talking and the gun was so close to me. The only thing I could see was that done. She says trotman's hand was on the gun, but he didn't have a grip on it. I went, grabbed for the gun. I went to run and that's when he grabbed me from the back. I fell over with the gun, the gun fell on the ground. That was when the other people on the train intervened because I could feel him not on me. She slid the gun up the aisle out of his reach. They still had him subdued enough for me to get up, run, grab the gun, run off the train, and just chuck it onto the tracks on the other side. See the video of our conversation at WTO P dot com. And this kind of thing has been steadily creeping from our computer screen into our wider political landscape. I'm Bridget Todd, and on my new podcast, Internet hate machine. "That and other spiritual writers say they say this also is one thing to think about God. You know, to meditate in a manner that gives you knowledge about God. That gives us knowledge about the scripture when we come to know about Jesus. You know, as we look at the gospel and meditate on it, it's another thing, you know, it's one thing to know about God. It's another thing to know to come to him very personally. To be in his presence in a very real way, and to be in his presence in a very real way, might be a very silent moment. You know, with no visual accompaniment to that. And that's really what we want in prayer as it goes on in life that we're coming back again and again they after day and seeking not to possessively hold him with capture him in some manner that I can bring that back again to another recovered experience of him the next day, but rather to go forth again and again in seeking him, not something about him, but him very personally. And that, you know, it depends also on his side of the exchange that's taking place. And he's there, he is with us, he is the other very present within our soul as we pray, but sometimes that can be a very silent time of communication that seems to know very much uncommunicative perhaps at times. I think it appears repeating and you speak of this in the book, in that section on contemplative faith certitude and darkness, it sums up much of what we have been talking about. You say, there must be a refusal to practice prayer as though just following customary routines, locked in place, looking to satisfy ourselves in ways that have become familiar and mildly rewarding. Our motivation should not be to recover satisfying experiences of God if on any day we are consoled. Above all, perhaps we should not go to prayer with the illusion of proficiency. But also, God's unpredictability must direct the soul on the path of prayer, which in effect makes prayer quite new on each day. I think that's really important, father haggerty. I mean, but it takes us a while to get there, don't you think? Well, definitely it takes anything, you know, we have to plunge into something that we may not be so comfortable with. And that is the life of prayer also. I mean, the great test of prayer in one way is to get started not to be serious about giving some silent time, some legitimate silent time. I mean, that can't be two minutes. It has to be, you know, let's say 20 minutes of silence gets us started. If we do that daily with God, but there is a long walk in this and lifetime then of staying with him in prayer and seeking him and we have relationship in many different ways over the course of days. In any one day with God, but to give silent time a prayer, the great goal of St. John of the cross is to try to meet and strive for real union with the real reality of God, and this is an infinite being of love and that can be a very abstract phrase or it can be a true reality. An infinite being of love that where we really are just nothing before him in terms of the reality of our small love meeting this infinite love and prayer, the infinite personal love of God and prayer. And that kind of personal exchange or encounter with him is part of that effort of journey and prayer over a lifetime. What you just said, I mean, even if it's just 20 minutes, maybe just even starting out. It's smaller. Don't forget there's 24 hours in a day. And it doesn't mean that the participating in the scripture study or taking time out to do alexio or doing other types of things. It doesn't mean that that conversation and that learning and getting to know and resting with the reality of God, but then also to allow space for that deeper presence. Am I hearing that in possible counsel for others, father hagerty? Well, surely chante St. John of the cross will say, I'm sure that he was saying that, you know, yes, not living now in the 1500s, silence might be more difficult than our lives. It's true that there are more distractions for silence and it's not just the silence of having no radio or music on or no conversation. But the silence of private activity where too much tied into the smartphone or checking things all the time, if we live in that kind of, in a way, perpetual distraction, it will be hard, if not impossible, to have any greater depth of prayer. We'll have our faith and we can live a life with God, but I'm a firm believer in why this kind of book has now been written also. I think that there is a strong desire among people, not, you know, the great majority at all, but there's a very strong segment of people out there who want and have tasted something of this desire for God. And if they have that taste, then they have that desire, that flame is there. For that flame to become more of a fire, you have to give some science to God then in a day. And there has to be a quieting down in one's habits, perhaps. You could be a very active person, Mother Teresa was a very active person. So you have to have silent segments of a day also. In 20 minutes, you know, like you said, it's a long day. If we think of all that things we do in a day, you know, 20 minutes a half hour, and then

"That's not true. We had stunned. So we had body levels and we had stunts, which are really two different things. So like shantae Adams had her body double that one of them came from the baseball for all program and another one I played high school baseball, who I was so excited to find that these two women looked enough alike to do the job and do it really well. And then other times when their slides, sure. That's someone from stunts. But not always. The actors had a good base coming in. Some more than others, whether that was, you know, softball, middle school softball, you know, but it was, it was all really great. Yeah, I was going to ask about that without ragging on anyone's baseball skills specifically, but you've coached people at all levels from young people to the major leagues. So I'm sure you've seen everything, but was there anyone who was bringing a special baseball expertise or were most of the actors starting from sort of the same level and if there were some people who were basically just new to the sport, how do you give them a crash course in looking like a baseball player in whatever time you had available? Yeah, and I think that comes down to how well can you communicate the movements of baseball in what they need for the scene. So I don't need to teach someone how to hit the corner with a curve while or something. But I do have to help get them into position so we can at least film it. But Callie McCormick, who was the shortstop for the peaches. She actually played in a women's league up in Canada. Melanie field played softball in the Broadway league. Both tarsi cardin and Abby Jacobson both had some softball background. So, you know, you kind of build off of what they know. And other times, if they didn't know something for me, it's like, how do you relate the information to what they do know? And that's sort of the quickest way to learn. For chante, Adams, it was, you know, she called it choreography. So pitching motion I had never thought of this choreography, but for her she was able to use her own experience in dancing and then think about it the steps in pitching. And so I suppose what coordinator just has a coach, you know, grabbing what they do know, whether that's tennis golf, what do they know about balance and transferring your body front back and so on? And working with it. And was it sort of a team building or team spirit building exercise just in the same way that the peaches in the show bond over practice and playing baseball together did the cast kind of do the same? I mean, I'd imagine that with some people, they just thought, oh, this is a cool show and a great role and I guess I'll just have to grin and bear it when it comes to the baseball, but did a lot of people actually embrace it and end up enjoying that aspect of the role. Oh, all of the actors wanted to look as good as they could. And the whole show is very focused on bringing honor to the original league, the all American girls professional baseball league. So, you know, being good, they wanted to pick up everything they could. We did a two week training camp before the pilot truly training camp before we shot the season. And even before the pilot, I was over, was it the pilot? No, it was a second thing. We were shooting. I was already practicing with some of them like three times a week. So it was through the baseball, I think, that the bonding really started. And they could see within one another how each was improving. And that was really exciting, you know, when someone makes a big play because we did play, you know, we did a part of our practice was to play the game so they could see where the ball goes, what feels like how to lead off. You know, you're just super excited when someone gets it right. The frozen and you get them out at home and it's like any other win that you would have, whether it's professional or little kids, it's just about achievement and helping someone with their goals. I know that there were a number of women from the original real life league who were involved with the series and a variety of capacities and I wonder if you had the opportunity to talk with any of them about their own baseball journeys and what a league of their own but mostly the actual league had meant to them. Yeah, so you'll see two women in the TV show in episode one Shirley berkovich and maybelle Blair Shirley passed, I don't know, maybe 6 months ago, four months ago and maybe I'll just become superstar. On the media everywhere. She has come out at age 95 during one of the premiere q-and-as. You know, I've had the good fortune of just sort of knowing the women from the league over the years and hearing their stories and talking to them and having them actually come out to our tournaments with baseball for all so that our girls who are ten years old and meeting 85 year old who could still throw a ball. And some of the barriers and obstacles that the members of the peaches encounter in this series. This is taking place 80 years ago, but how analogous are they to wet girls and women continued to deal with and baseball today or is it you dealt with growing up? I think it's definitely different time period and you know the movie shows the different time of course it's a war and so the roles of women and then in the TV show. You know, we really build off of that and what does it mean to make a living when your husband goes off to war? What does it mean to be gay?

"And I can appreciate why they didn't want to say the story that we're interested in is the Rockford peaches to the exclusion of the reality of black female ball players at the time because there is a history of that, right? As we reconsidered, you know, and sort of reexamined the Negro leagues we learned about the history of women in that league after integration, right? So there are important stories to tell here and I would hate for those stories to not be told, but it does, it does constrain the series to have these two parallel stories that are only intermittently bridged. And it can lead to it feeling kind of disjointed. Yeah. Now, I will say, I think that they still made the right decision to do it this way rather than have it be sort of an alternate history version of that era, right? Because yes. You know, like I think people's mileage with Bridgerton as an example can kind of vary right. And I think that there are ways in which that show can be kind of too cute for its own good, but I also think that regency England doesn't feel close to us. Yeah, right. And this era and the prejudice that marked it is still very close to us, right? Like we are still admittedly less you and I specifically, but like our still living with the reverberations of this period of American history. And so I think it would have felt, I don't know if offensive is the right word, but like disingenuous to try to revitalize this time in a sort of ahistorical or alternate history model because this is still so close for so many people and I think that they made the right choice and also the necessity of that choice does put a structural sort of issue at the heart of the series that like I said they are sometimes I think more deft and navigating than others. Right, yeah it's kind of like when MLB finally designated or recognized Negro league stats as major league, I think one of the concerns that people had was like, well, are we blurring the distinction between them? Are we is this revisionist history? Is this pretending as if there was no color barrier, which I don't think is quite the case, but I think there is some danger of just sort of skirting that and not acknowledging that. I think the purpose was to acknowledge that these were major leaguers. This was a major league level of play, but you know, that was one of the sensitivities that people were like, well, let's not let MLB pretend that it stores where wide open or that there wasn't this bright line between the two. So I think there would be the same sort of danger maybe here if you just went back even if it was sort of an aspirational sense like let's imagine the world that we would have wanted to exist or something, you know, I think just to not recognize what was actually happening there as recent as it was in his resonant as it still is, yeah, that would have been potentially a problem. So I guess they did the best they could once they had decided on this sort of split structure and in a way I really did find myself being more drawn to the max side of the story than the peaches side and they don't interact a lot. You know, Carson and max meet up here and then and she shows up max shows up to the initial tryout scene, which is very similar to the one in the movie. And she makes her very impressive throw like that unspeaking character in the movie, but she is totally leave and then the rest of the series is her trying to find a place to play and express herself not just as an athlete, but as a person and the Rockford part of the story is obviously more aligned with the movie in some ways and Carson, for example, is sort of like daddy in that she's the catcher. She's the team leader. She has a husband who's at war. So there are some similarities there, although in other ways, maybe Darcy carden's character is more dotty like personality wise. So it's almost like they're syntheses of Dottie's character in a way. But between that and just the similarities with the baseball action, Nick Offerman shows up for part of the time in the duke and roll, the Tom Hanks roll sort of, although sort of subverts that role in a way that didn't completely work for me, to be honest, but it's a little more by the book it just in terms of the actual baseball, the baseball is fine, but you know, it doesn't stray that far from your typical sort of sports movie or sports show action and your whole underdog come back kind of narrative, I guess. And so it's all fine, but I don't think that there would be a pressing reason to reboot or remake the original if you were just sticking to the baseball stuff or to the peaches. So whereas that movie was studiously not gay, at least explicitly, this show is extremely gay. Is that much gay? Yes. Which I'm sure will be welcomed by a lot of people. It's definitely doing justice to the part of this story that the original totally snubbed and skirted. So whereas seemingly no one was gay on the original Rockford peaches of the movie. Almost everyone is gay and these rock beaches is just a lot about Carson kind of coming out to herself in a way and realizing who she is and telling others who she is and max's is sort of going through the same process, which I guess you could say, well, it's parallel in a way. I mean, at times, maybe it almost feels like redundant, like these two leads are kind of going through some aspects of the same journey, I guess, but I just, I really like the relationship and if I had to pick one actor who really stands out, I guess there are a few, I think chante Adams is very good, but be solo, is really good. I don't know that I would say the show is hilarious. I mean, it's kind of like smiling more than laughing most of the time for me, but she's legitimately very nice to the level of this is actually funny. It's because of her. Yeah. She's really good. And I also like Roberto Kalinda as lupe, who is one of the peaches she's picture. And that's another thing with the peaches you do have some more diversity, I suppose, you have Jewish characters and you've Latina characters and Cuban characters, so they did what they could there within the strictures of the league, I suppose. But there's a lot that's just about like, oh, the viability of the business and of the league and some of those storylines that are basically pulled almost without major changes from the original, but all of the social aspects of the team and the people that that's the focus here, you know, much more so than the baseball, the baseball is the backdrop, like obviously these characters really care about baseball. It means a lot to them, but as it often is in baseball movies, the baseball itself is not necessarily the main draw. Well, I think that one of the things that, you know, we've sounded a little lukewarm to this point, I think.

"And my girl Melissa chante. Welcome back, sweetie. I need so good to see you. You know, I am all about summer sundresses and accessible style for all. It should not be difficult and I am bringing it to you today. Well, let's get right into it. Scan that QR code to shop these home looks, the Barbie core look is the train of the summer. Tell us about that. We're seeing a ton of pink inspired by the Valentino runway. And so the easiest way to do it is this dress. So if you're going like a date night look, you want to do Barbie corps. This is it. This dress from Lulu's is just so magnificent. And you want to do it, you want to elevate it, doing an easy satin stretch that has a twist front that's really flattering that bias cut in the front is really flattering asymmetrical. Adds a little bit of curves if you are a little bit more straight and narrow and you can see that Kendra does is straight and Nara and she has a little bit of curve. So this is the perfect look. Everything from head to toe is Lulu's. That dress is only 48 dollars. Are you serious? Yeah, it's pretty incredible. And the shoes are one of their best sellers for doing the Barbie cord look. You want to try to do a monochromatic look, but add a little bit of texture. You can tell the shoes are a little bit velvet. And then I paired it with the satin clutch to still keep on the trend. And then one add a little pop of color out of the drop of the gold earring. So that's really simple. Like I said, everything is super affordable for this look. And she looks absolutely fantastic. Oh, just beautiful. Thank you, darling. Yes. Now let's talk about the ballet core. Yes, ballet court is another big trend we've seen this year. Really a feminine feminine, light, airy, like a ballerina. Thinking like a full skirt. You know who's been nailing it this year in the Parisian retreat as J.Lo and her honeymoon. You know what I mean? Anything that's tie up dresses tie up tops. So obviously our curl Isabella is doing this so well. No way to do this. It's like a monochromatic white look. It's so essential for summer. This is from Lucy Paris, this dress is so great, right? Yes. And so the ballet, where you feel like she's a ballerina with the full skirt. This is great for a girl that maybe has fuller hips, pear shape. And then we paired it at the white tie of shoe from leroux. Larue is a designer shoe that is not designer price. You would find that she normally $700. This is a shoe. That's only two 70 5. They're pairing with high end designer, a high end brand, favorite daughter. So this is a collaboration, great tie of shoe that's essential that will never go out of style. And then I paired it with a fun, that bag is from sensei studio. So this is just a dress that you would probably wear great for like a bridal party or a white party. She's like, so she's going to the Hamptons without the Hamptons price. Oh my goodness girl. I love that, you know? And something else florals are always the go to for summer. So what's the best way to rock floral? I am all about a floral that you can take from the beach to date night. A toss in dressing. Help me just it's easy. This is a dress that is great for if I'm like home in Chicago seeing my family and I'm running with the grocery store or I'm going to date nor to the pool. This is the, this is the dress that I'm rocking. It's from torrid. It's only $13. I love torrid. It's a toss on dress. You just go with. Yes. So I'm such a fan of that. And then just to elevate it a little bit. Nothing is more classic than a denim jacket. So you just talk it over. And another way to style it over is just tossing it over your shoulder and not peeping. Just tossing out your shoulder, just to give it a little twist. Well, then essential white bag. And I love a white sneaker. Those are some Frankie love. Designed by podiatrists that you can actually have custom inserts, so it's extra comfortable. It's not your typical white sneaker. A white leather sneaker is the one thing that every woman needs in her closet to elevate her look. I love those are fun. I love this is my favorite so far. But you know if you're looking for something super chic, what kind of dress would you eat? Okay, it's been a crochet all day. Yes, girl. Yeah. And I'm bringing in the curves. Yes, mama. Yes. I feel like this is my lizzo inspired crochet look. So this is from
