I said I never saw the signs even though they were all there so I my undergraduate degree is in filmmaking and so I thought for sure I was going to be a filmmaker. I was going to change the world with my amazing documentary Henry Films but then I realized as soon as I graduated literally walked across the stage the WanNa do this and so I didn't know what to do and and I had a friend who was working in a special education classroom as a para educator and he told me that they had a position open in that he really thought that I might enjoy it and so so I applied and I became a para educator working specifically with kids in a designed instruction special education classroom so these are kids with a profound profound developmental challenges and so I worked for an entire year with these kids kids and it was so amazing sitting side by side with them and then I also got had the chance to coach Special Olympics basketball that year and so I was coaching mazing team of young men who you know had the best attitudes in an worked so hard and I never had to you know yell at them or make him run lines they right there every day wanting to practice and so I had this magical year as a pair educator in the Peace Corps. I taught as well but I still when I came back from the Peace Corps. I didn't know that teaching was going to be the thing for me mostly because I thought well that's pretty heavy heavy lift. I haven't filmmaking don't have a degree you know a teaching certificate and I found my way down to Texas because that's where my aunt was living and she happens happens to be a theater teacher and she was running a little theater down there and so I went down there to help her and she saw me working with kids at the theater camp. Yep that summer and she was like manny need to be a teacher and I said how. How can I possibly be a teacher. I I don't WanNa. Go back and get another bachelor's degree and she goes well. we have a lot of schools in Texas that need educators you should just apply and I and I did and I got a teaching job teaching theater and and speech and debate and communications and from there I just did what I needed to do to get my certification and I've been teaching ever since and it was the best decision I ever made obviously you may you picked right. He did the right thing national teacher of the year. I'll say OK city. How about you yes so you are being generous in saying that. I was a poet I took to be a poet to be a writer and I was in this first first year studies class for poetry. This was all of the students who had signed up who said I WANNA be a poet This is my path and we were matched with a faculty adviser. Who is a poet this wonderful man he's one appellate. Sir For his poetry wow and so I spend my first year you know being eighteen gene and writing sort of tortured poems imagining like Mandy. I'm going to change the world with parents with my torture yeah. He and I are meeting. We're sort of talking about how the year has gone and what I'm going to do next year and he he leans back in his chair. He has his way of like leaning back in his chair very a very slowly and deliberately and stretching his arms out and putting the mind is head and he says yeah you know I don't. I don't think you're meant to be a poet. Oh Man Dang it yeah I. I have to agree them like I was like. You know you're right. I'm meant to be a fiction writer. saw spent a few more years writing fiction and then. I had this epiphany that I really really really loved being in school. I loved college loved picking what I was learning about and learning in this interdisciplinary way and diving really deeply into the things that I wanted to know more about and so I came up with master plan which was that I would become a college professor at Sarah Lawrence so I would never have after lead and I would just get to like do that all the Jack and I would just become one of my professors that I loved and admired so much and so this brings me into my professor leader's office and I say okay well. I figured it out. I'm going to you and she he pulls this little book off of her shelf this little Blue Book and she says okay. I want you to read this book and come back next weekend. Let's talk so the book is written by her father. it's called horses compromise and her father is a man named head size irs a very famous education reform guy can her mom is also. Nancy siser really famous in the education world I of course had heard nothing of them because I had studied creative writing in women's history and that's it but this sets me on this path of like learning about education and thinking about education and then she sends me to go do an internship at one of the schools schools that her father had helped to open and then I spend that summer working at summer bridge breakthrough with rising seventh graders who I was terrified of course sure seventh grade you're right. It's the most awful croff it's rough out there and so. I was like I don't WanNa go work with those kids kids. They're going to be mean. I don't WANNA relive seventh grade but you know of course what turned out to happen is that I loved. Those kids like these kids are funny. They era izing may have great ideas and so I went back to school in the fall and I said that's it. I'M GONNA I'M GONNA work with middle schoolers like I don't WanNa be a college. Professor Despaired Muda a mini. Go work with with these kids and so yeah I haven't studied education. I didn't have a degree in education. I had to like figure out how I was going. Make this thing work and I got a fellowship right after college. Um to learn to be a teacher and and now a teacher. It's so interesting that both of you took took sort of alternative paths into teaching where you thought you're going a different direction. I I hope that's inspiring people that are listening who maybe didn't come up through the Gullet of you know getting their their bachelors in education but have this real drop.

It's very concerned about the Celtics when he has people in blenders like that off the handle it's a good sign for the Celtics day was also drilling threes.
