"But i thought askar's today we are not talking about glenn close doing do but i can tell you that much. Bang god although what we are talking about is i think significantly worse. It's definitely worse today. We're gonna be talking about the chadwick boseman. Nf t that was auctioned off ahead of the academy awards which is a sentence. I never thought. I would ever have to say on this podcast. Yeah if you had chadwick boseman and on your oscars bingo card. Congratulations also. are you psychic. Can you give me next week's lottery. Numbers so i think i we should probably explain loosely. What an nfc is. Because if you're if you're a long-time listener of the pod you'll know that are past. Descriptions of nafta have perhaps been artistic. You know. I mean our. Nfc's not art in an themselves. I don't actually know what. I understand about an f. ts. Which stands for non tangible tokens which is a phrase. I cannot say five times fast is that they're a bit like bitcoin but not really put very to simply an has value in currency like a bitcoin except unlike bitcoin of which there are many on the internet there can only be one of an nf t so. This is like a baseball card. If you had the only purple babe ruth card left in the world. Yeah i guess where i get. Tripped up is that people can auction off their tweets but those tweets existed in the world beforehand. And you can just take a screen shot of tweet tweet back. Bring it back now. Talk to me about the chadwick. Boseman t what did it look like. Ugly is my first description of it but it was based off of this three d model rendering that you can actually buy for fifty dollars online. Which is a very common thing you can do as artists which is by assets when you're doing but it's a three d. model of his head and it is kind of bathe in gold. I guess to look like an oscar statue. And then these kind of kanda esque blue and purple leaves kind of flour into the scene and so it this gold statue surrounded by blue and purple leaves. And it's a gift so it moves like it's kind of a little scene and so this is this is the nfc that is being auctioned off so obviously because it is an nfc. There can only be one so it wasn't like every oscar winner was given this. Nfc swag what was in the bag. Yes so in. The bag was this. Nfc along with other nfc's and it was basically included in. This bag was a way for anyone to bid on what is being described as an ultra rare empty creation. So what you get in. The bag is a chance to bid on this thing. This really fucked up thing. Yeah this really bad thing. Also just like shit gift like here. You have a chance to buy this thing. Thank you and so. This thing was created by this group called nominee and they reached out to a bunch of artists and ultimately chose five one of which was andrea. Shame who is the one who created the chadwick boseman f. t. a choice. Perhaps not the right one in so many those working with distinct assets which is this. Pr group who. I think most people would probably familiar with in terms of the kind of oscar swag bags that go viral every single year. You know what. I'm talking well so like i knew of at the swag bags right. It's like you get a new car in a villa. In the south of france and bottles of brad pitt's rosa. I didn't know that those bags were not given out by the academy thought were sponsored by the oscars capital no. They are in fact not affiliated to the point that the academy has sued distinctive assets for trademark infringement with the swag bags because they often tend to go viral for the worth reasons the academy also actively encourages nominees not to accept these swag bags and nominees stating taxes if they accept them on whatever they accept. Think you're getting a french village of really getting his property taxes. Move that bus. So in cases like this it kind of demonstrates why the economy does not want to be associated with distinctive assets. This enough t went absolutely viral on saturday night. Because it's in such poor taste. People were assuming that the academy was honoring chadwick with this nf t and by honoring chadwick meant that he was gonna win. Best actor for his role in marinas black bottom and so when he didn't win combined with this really kind of gross imagery that was set to be auctioned off for one point two million dollars it was in internet parlance not a good look. Has the artist said anything since the backlash yes on tuesday. He releases apology on instagram. That was also kind of trying to correct them formation because a lot of people assumed that nominees were getting the nfc swag like they were also owning it which didn't make sense of also being auctioned off so he clarified that and he also kind of clarified how he came to create this thing and he apologized and says that he now recognizes that chadwick's face is a triggering reminder of his death rather than his life and he will be redesigning the artwork to be auctioned off later this week. So you keep saying it was going to be auctioned off for one point two dollars who stood to make all that money so theoretically fifty percent of it was supposed to go towards charity and the charity was to help blackman get colon cancer. Screenings which important 'cause and then ten percent were supposed to go towards the artist forty percent. I'm assuming is going to nominee. Who was the group that reached out to these artists commit survey art yeah yes shady extremely shady and also the commissioner of the art results most will artists and had originally said that one hundred percent of the proceeds going to charity. But by the time the nfc actually debuted it had gone down to half the proceeds. It's just shady it from start to finish chadwick. Boseman were sorry. And hopefully your your gold head will not appear on an nfc auction site ever perpetuity. Ever can say ever in perpetuity forever and ever please no oscar statue versions of chadwick boseman. Chadwick Boseman's Family Defends Anthony Hopkins After Oscars Backlash
"We can touch on the oscars which just happened this past weekend. i like. i said i didn't watch them. Did you guys watch him. No one watched the yes. Nobody rocks create. Nobody watches award shows anymore. Yeah or outright and reasons but one of the big ones that like nobody has cable anymore down. That's a good point actually remit if you already have like a plan like table yeah. I'm so i watched it. I watched all the way up until like the last half hour. I still like the big. The wards stop watching. Yes so i guess for for some background so this one viewership. I guess for the first time in a long time it was under ten million viewers where i think last year's was over twenty million so pre big drop off and then another twist they did towards the end was they did best picture before best actor and i guess best best actress. Yes before black before both the lead acting categories. Yes no mad. Land won best picture but then the big disappointment at the end was so walking. Phoenix came out to give the best actor award. And i think a lot of people were hoping it was gonna be chadwick boseman but it ended up being anthony hopkins and he was not there. He was asleep. Apparently and then joaquin phoenix walked off stage and that was the end of the show. And so i think a lot of people were not only pissed that chadwick boseman did not get which his family has already said has come out and said we don't feel snubbed but a lot of people were upset about that and also it ended on such a low note.

E think friends part of an American tradition. My dad used to say what's remembered lives. It was no surprise. Nomad Land took the best film of the bastards. Lots of people expected to do the same at the Oscars. Two weeks from now. It's a powerful investigation of the soul of America, with Frances McDormand, superb in the lead role, and her win as best actress was predictable. Last year he died of colon cancer in august. Whose forty three. He kept the fact that he was being treated for cancer within a very small circle of people until his death. We really wanted to take a look at some of the performances that show his range and his skill over and above rainey's black bottom. Which is his final onscreen performance. He won a golden globe for that role last month. and now he's up for an oscar. Those men was a playwright and worked in theatre as a young actor. Jackie robinson he also would play thurgood. Marshall and the pick that i brought is get on up the two thousand fourteen film. He made where he started as none other than james brown. The godfather of soul you know bio-pics are really hard to pull off and it's really interesting to watch this movie. Because i think that taylor who directed it and who previously directed the help which made me a little bit concerned when when this movie i out about how this is going to tackle someone like james brown after a movie like the help but what it does is it doesn't tell the story linearly it kind of jumps around in time. It opens with chadwick in old age. Makeup this is like him in his fifties sixties. When he got kind of a radic was clearly having an issue with drugs and with him going to one of the businesses he owns and being really upset. Quote it was while she was in a state of nervousness bordering upon a collapse that the arrest was made the officers and fade in her luxurious chamber and read the warrant as Miss Chadwick propped up by pillows stared wild-eyed straight before her and clutched at the coverlet with her nerveless hands. "Now. You don't WanNa. Hear. No shut up. Shut up back backwards said, she told the tale quote that picture was of an uncle of Chadwick. This uncle was not wealthy, but regularly kept the Chadwick family supplied with money just how Miss Chadwick did not know at that time the uncle was taken sick upon deathbed. He called for Miss Chadwick and told her a secret. The secret was that the family were related to Carnegie. The proof of this was in the safety deposit value of New York. Bank the name of which Miss Chadwick held back. So her story is morphing and becoming more and more crazy, but it's all just about the connection she has to to Carnegie because this is a totally different story than the one I think she also you also have to be like when you're this deepening grist, you'll also there's probably some sort of adrenaline. Pump that isn't as you so you are just sort of clicked. On a gun, the drug of getting away with it and pushing it just you know eventually, you're just like well denied this dinosaur. So he gives her one hundred, twenty thousand dollars loan from his private fortune and another two, hundred and forty, thousand from. Company Bank. She knows bankers want money and then here's the deal she's giving them bonuses. So if a banker comes to her Or she goes to one and wants alone she says, you're GonNa get a massive bonus. So. So it's it's just greed and it's just like they're being nonsensical. Not Seeing what this is because they're getting twenty thousand dollars or some ship. "Your favorite. PODCAST. APP. We've all got stories, friends grossly neglected misdiagnosed or ignored by doctors family members dealing with chronic conditions but are afraid to get it checked out. Or maybe all of the above describes you. The truth is though Chadwick Bozeman death while shocking is all too common black Americans have the highest death rate and shortest survival rate of colorectal cancer of any racial group. In the United States there are a lot of reasons for it but one of the most important ones is late diagnosis. By the time we get to a doctor it's just too late. Are Wise wants this week are two guys literally working to save our lives Dr Tallow? Brown is an emergency medicine physician and clinical instructor at Stanford University. Hospital. He's been on the front lines treating people with covert nineteen over these last few months and Jamila lacy is the founder of Trap Medicine It's a nonprofit that focuses on using barbershops to help address the health inequities of black men and boys. He's also in medical school. When we sat down to talk, he just got class. I started our conversation by asking Dr Brown about Chadwick Bows Men's passing those a tough below. When you interact with patients who have like severe illnesses and the conversation you have with them is usually built around not just mortality in the sense of like being finite but also being infinite like living as robustly as you can in doing the most that you can with the time that you have and so when I think about this loss I, am automatically issued to seeing how robustly he lived in the way that he took that pain internalized it, and gave us something that lifted up an entire community at once is just beyond is mind blowing I think that that's what happened. Djamil. When I first heard the news I. Obviously was shot just like everybody else You have this cultural icon in our community as a result of you know his his roles in a number of films but also like he's one of us, right he went to hpc you went to Howard. You know you've navigate his way to Hollywood he took on roles that really depicted us and very positive license. These are things that like. We. All know individuals who are on their path to becoming great whatever they do. We know what that is like what that requires and we know when I found out that one he was he was diagnosed when it was already stays three cancer. Right and so with he been impacted by this for a while before he found out and he decided to just live and that's one of the things i. I pride myself on and I think black men we often have to is we have to maximize the time that we have in this around because. We don't have the luxury of being able to say you know I've eaters. I WANNA see myself here right like we live in for today. A lot of us are living for this hour. So it's just a reminder for me to just live and it's also a reminder that like. Regardless of how much money you make, how much education you acquire. Black people are always at risk. Because of racism and people will say, well, how do you connect racism to chat with Bozeman case trust me along the path of where he found out that he was diagnosed there was some sort of formal structural racism he and count without a doubt. I want both of you to break that down because you're so right to get to the point where someone who is his age is diagnosed with stage three that means a massive breakdown absolutely I think about are the fact that the general recommendation is for. All people to be screen at fifty years old whereas for blacks is forty five, but it can even be earlier than that. The act of advocating for yourself to get that screen earlier is an example of structural racism of systemic racism. The in seeing how implicit bias is play out here because you can walk into a provider's office and say I think I need to get a colonoscopy and they say. Colonoscopy because they don't understand the way that it decimates the people in our community, they don't understand that fear plays a factor into that and how much it actually took for a person to get to the point where they were. Okay with asking. For an exam so like the things compound and calcified in which ended up with this dislike. kind of like resonating in distrust or mistrust in the system this resonating like multi layer. Of oppression of people who don't have resources or who are under informed and lack health literacy and lack of proper access. I don't know about you all but prior to me being in medical school or me being a physician I did not know any black gastroenterologist you couldn't tell me someone can you just give them a call and tell me what a colonoscopy actually was and what the screen test actually do I don't want to monopolize time with those of the first things that come on my mind. Not Monopolizing the time, this is the time. This is what this conversation is about. The American Cancer Society. They came out with a report in his show that highest rates of colorectal cancer in the US are among black people and about the risk factors for why people get colorectal cancer. If you think I, mean just think about logically diet. Like if we're just make very general connection between Diet and health outcome, we know that we live in communities that are our food desert. Right and so to me, it's no surprise that we have these highest rates of colorectal cancer up from like not having insurance. Medical bias aside from these guidelines that Don allow people dictate when your insurance will kick in to pay for writing. Trying to get a screen right now, if I'm I'm thirty, six years if I tried to go get screened for colorectal cancer that's coming out of my pocket. Because of what the WOW. So okay because you know there's been a big push since Chadwick died to get people to to get screenings. I, mean I, WanNa talk to you guys about your efforts that you've been doing for quite a while. But you're telling me that if you're thirty six and you go to the doctor and you say I just want to I, like to get a colonoscopy it will come out of your pocket because you're not at the age.

Black Panther and movies during of it it. I I saw I. saw an article today I think some theaters are going to be showing forty two. Forty two AMC you will be releasing forty two which is you know one of the end? Yeah IT'S A. It's a complex idea because obviously it's On. It's one thing I will say about this is that I think. You know we we know Chadwick, Bozeman and he's relevant to this podcast because of Dander because he became an icon within the genre fiction that we we work with. But his career is so much bigger than just this one you big money role and you know trust me his his family will be will be well taken care of from and I fully expected to be at Chadwick Bozeman Foundation from the from from that marvel money going forward. But You know it's he is had these amazing roles. Portraying Jackie Robinson and forty two portraying. Good. Marshall in Marshall you know Brown get on. Get on up, I mean just these iconic real life. people that you know. indelibly changed society. That is that is that is a that is a real honor. For him and then in just that, he had the ability to to convincingly portray all these different people. Really. It is it. It's. It's an amazing. It's an amazing career that he leaves behind and. To be taken so quickly. I mean it. It just compounds the legend it compounds. How amazing it was that he was here and You know. It's its own way. It's it's just such A. ROIC death in its own way you know this idea it's not like it is A. It's not like he was out partying. The road or any of the other ways that we lose stars young. This was a man who battled cancer. Privately yeah. He didn't the I'd like nobody knew like none of the Disney people knew nobody really knew except his family and not only was heap film making all these films while battling cancer but they said he was also going out to the hospitals and you know seeing kids and stuff. and. I. Think it's just the most. Powerful testament to it that as he himself is battling this he he is going to these hospitals in reaching out to these kids and making sure that they they know you even though he. Did. Not. Tell them. I'm battling cancer too. I'm sure but he's letting them. Know you know you can be strong you can you know you? and..

I was watching I was watching Society Chadwick Bozeman plates. Challah, which seems like a very strip a simple construction, but like it's important that you're not going to see the character. But to see the actor play the character like that's a distinction between a movie star Mike Person, that's just acting a role. and honestly, that's what that's what the energy would like the last seen when the. You know the quench the Black Panther jet is lifted off of the black top and in Oakland and he's walking up to it in a trenchcoat and it's just like it just looks like that looks correct. I don't know like. I think that there was. Like A. Hit cemented like his look. You know the specific Tavak buzzfeed looked the same way that like Denzel Washington has one which is like. A single with A. Bike halfway between the SMIRK and a scowl that lake turns into babies but you know exactly what look I'm talking about And Chevy Bozeman has one. But it's like he's slightly tilts his head back in like sort of squint is in as nationals a little bit and it's like his he's not saying anything but it's just like the situation is unequal like and it's He makes face at every movie he's in. He had look with he was an extra in like season two of justified when you was playing bike a street dealer that was friends with Lorenzo Tate who then shoots up through the hand so he can't become a magician bike he wanted to be. It's like it's air everywhere all the time he was working on that for a while. The accident and everything else about Black Panther physical kind of. Movie Magic I don't know how to even describe it with him because. To my point earlier, there's so much stuff in Black Panther. If it had been done a different way, the performance has been in a little different you imagine the sort of. Injured is Bora tensions that would have just spilled over would have been American blacks versus Africans life skin versus dark. We would. We were recruited all the people from all the debates about British black actors versus American black actor. There was a there was A. But. That's the thing. It's like take all of those tensions right that exist within and around the movie like Black Panther and I I. Guess I think Chadwick Bozeman is the only singular. Element of that movie that felt like it smoothed over what otherwise could have been a tumultuous said of disagreeable. It's hard to get black people all on the same page the way that Black Panther did and I really do think that's a credit to Chadwick's performance and also his public persona and I don't know I. Think those sort of hard depend on qualities about the guy that things that make him. Kind of underrated until it's too late and we don't have him anymore. Like they feel weirdly essential to why that movie. was what it was and is what it is. Ladies and Gentlemen Chadwick postmen..

James Bond is what there's been twenty five films but what five or six different James Bond's right and that's different in many ways like that character is timeless. So why can't the Black Panther be so you know love to see the story to continue I think you bring up a great point and the other aspect on this I don't WanNa make sure Forgotten is yes, everyone rightfully. So is an ourselves as well? We're mourning the death of Chadwick and want to remember his character for what it was when he brought to that role but there were other characters in the film right that represented images like you had Sherry and you had, I, forget her name but her character's name but like Danny is character like you had these. Boku right to kind of put on thickening. We'll kill Maga died. So you know he's not coming back Michael Jordan. was supposed to be in Black Panther to Gotcha but the point is like so you have these other characters that represented these other images right that you kind of to Sam's point it is worth Kinda continuing that for the next generation I'd say and it might be too soon but I would personally love to still see that film come out in twenty twenty, two given how tough twenty twenty has been just have something else to look forward to and I would nominate J Ellis to Kinda step into that role again, thinking about men of great character that are great actors to fill that void. So I'd love to see someone like him step in carry the torch. Lawrence is Chris sure. We're now here I'm sure to be done right in obviously Ryan Kugler is a part of the the second part. He's GonNa make sure honor chapter right way I just don't WanNa see a Jaden Smith or Donald. Glover three months after a tense hey training Villanova will a Black Panther love them respect equally for me it's just very hard for me to process today in obviously refresh coming off this but one thing I do want to speak about too is Obviously, you know our children are you for affected by this but Chadwick Bozeman joked earlier debt when he was cast for Black Manta said. This is apparently to only black accurate can portray historical character but the thing is is that he did such a great job what it came down to doing James Brown and something that he was actually. Opposed to initially same thing for Thurgood Marshall a character he was opposed to initially, and now it, and also we count all was introduced to them as Jackie Robinson. So I think we'd be remiss to you know kind of just keep this focused simply on Black Panther..

Things and just that the humility and seriousness that was often critiqued by different fans and sometimes by the press in just the way that Chadwick would comport himself. people are kind of starting to reconceptualise him now, and it's it's hard because on the one hand you know it is it is so incredible to to recognize that that this was. A person where now people with disabilities can see themselves in the person but also recognizing the reasons why he didn't disclose or rather. We can assert we can kind of understand why he might have to not have disclosed these things. You know if you're dealing with this marvel machine where they're sequel after sequel after sequel and all of these different things you might not have had the career that he had if he had disclosed it but there's a lot there to back. And these kind of deaths happen and like you said, you don't get necessarily connected emotionally connected to the death of of a superstar.
