"Example, if you're trying to sell premium stuff, you need to use a warm sense such as vanilla or cinnamon compared with a cool sense, which be like peppermint or something along those lines. Also music is very very important, my friend Chad Myers who is one of the few non liberals working at CNN. He's a meteorologist evidently, they don't bother to check the politics of the meteorologist's. There's no democrat or Republican at high and low temperatures evidently, not he does this all the time garage sales. He plays Caribbean music. Like reggae. He's found his own little scientific study that people buy stuff when there's reggae music playing. I'll be darned. So he's he calls it by my S word music. And that's what he does. They find the same thing at the retail level, not necessarily with Caribbean music, but they have found that slow temple music. Yep. Versus upbeat music as a different the upbeat music people. Buy more stuff, really they stay around longer. I thought it was just the opposite. That the slow tempo music had a tendency to make you stroll. No, it's just the opposite. Isn't that funny? The power of grouping, especially when it comes to clothing, you sell more stuff if you show a complete outfit. And people can see for example, what that blouse or that shirt would look like with those slacks or pants or sweaters, or whatever. So the when they're really trying to when they have an item they're really trying to move look forward to be in a grouping. That's why yesterday I was looking at those reporters and going come on you don't need to be there and this one he says he's never been afraid of a storm until this one. But he talked about these tornadoes and Chad Myers who a meteorologist. Explain. Yeah. There were tornado like formations that the guy from America's Cajun navy described. I heard him talk about a mezro vortices inside the eye wall. The eye wall spinning at one hundred and fifty hundred and forty five whatever it might be where he was on the inside of that wall. There is a nother spin up that's happening almost like a dust devil, but it's not dust. It's rain and wind and debris boards. So at points in time this hundred and forty five hundred and fifty miles per hour. Hurricane may have had gusts inside over two hundred miles per hour. And that was the swirl that he saw that's the swirl that's send boards into his truck. That took the top off of his truck that when people were scared. They said we've never seen anything like this before it was the wind blowing one direction, but it was also the spin inside that wind that was also increasing the wind speed in just one little spot. We thought that there might. Have been four of those little vortices all that one time spinning as this thing went on land. Yeah. But for those of you that have lived at that live in tornado country or had lived in tornado country. You've experienced tornadoes. You know, tornado goes through rips, everything up and moves moves on. I mean, it's literally a a minute or two. This was like a tornado that lasted for thirty minutes over Mexico Beach,.

"Thirty nine eight six six ninety red is now for Gary McNamara and Eric Harley Mark Isler. Yes, it is. And we're going to be taking your calls shortly with Tom HALE. But I the report from Westwood One. Correspondent Chad Myers on the storm surge and onshore flow. This is a flood storm because we don't have that inter I will. And we don't have forward motion when you really wanna get surge. And we don't get surge you have to keep this storm moving quickly fifteen miles per hour in its slams into the shore. That's when all of that bubble of water just comes right onshore. No, no stopping well. Now, we're kind of releasing some of that water a little bit. And it's not coming on shore as fast because we don't have an onshore flow. Tom what onshore flow does that tell you anything? Well, actually, actually does that happens to be in an area where the winds are actually backing if you're on the south side of. The storm and wins, go counterclockwise around that so counterclockwise. The winds are coming up from the south or swinging around the top of it heading towards the northeast and then on the backside and what we would call the north west and southwest quadrants. Those winds are actually blowing offshore and so in those areas those areas haven't seen the real brunt of any kind of storm surge and as the hurricane loses its energy and the winds come down slowly. But surely as it moves down along the coast is expected and then cutting up through the Carolinas. We're actually not going to see as big a storm surge. Santee down to the south of down to the south of Myrtle Beach and a little bit to the south of Charleston. You're going to be seeing a storm surges of maybe two feet three feet compare that to what's being estimated as anywhere from ten up to at ten to twelve feet of storm surge from swells that are just offshore up to twenty feet. Now, what is different here is? If you go to the news river, which is the one that comes off a Pimlico sound and moves up to Newburgh. Newburn is pretty much the entire town flooded, and we're not talking about a necessarily small town. I mean, we're this town has size of a nice big rural town, we're talking probably ten square miles. And most of this is level some places probably a little bit below that. But newborn North Carolina right now. In the midwest for someone listening in the mid west, it's the size of a city of Sherman, Texas, and and so we're we're talking about a thirty five thousand population city. This town is got a couple of feet of water in it. And in fact, we have reports now over two hundred water rescues, and it's not flash flooding because it is basically inundation the water is rising out of the river the backs up into Newburn and the water's just coming up and coming up. And now they're starting do the rescues there's still one hundred and fifty people out there that are trapped and they're in the process of bringing those people out right now. And and and this is also in the face of wins that are probably thirty five to forty mile an hour winds, and if you've been in that kind of win it's it's hard to keep yourself stable, much less. Go into harm's way to try and rescue people that are that are indeed. Water. So they're the right now dealing with that that is a north of morehead city, and it's the opposite. If you go from Hatteras straight in it comes in around Hatteras or Ocracoke go in about fifty miles and you'll find just on shore on the mainland. This new Bern North Carolina. And now we go to Jeff in Detroit. Lakes. Minnesota you're on with Mark. And tom. Excellent. I couple of comments first off. I love your guys in show. I'm calling from Minnesota. I'm a tool and die maker. But I'm also a first responder volunteer in all thank you and minded amazing. I have some friends and family that live in South Carolina. And they're not there anymore. Packed a bag and took their families and filled up their pickup, and there are a couple mile one hundred miles inland where they can ride this out, and you know, down here, we have twenty thirty blow blizzards and same thing. We have down here. I mean, I I I have a problem with this. You put everybody in harm's way. When you stayed when people have told you that you need to leave, you know. So I guess that's that that was my comment, and I will say that I love that part of the country. Absolutely. And right now, we're at fifty two degrees. You know 'cause falls on us. But I love this time the area and duck hunting is underway. And but I will say that these people who that's right it out mentality. I mean, you put other people in jeopardy too. You know? Common. I have. But you guys have a great night. Thank you very much. Very much. Yeah. We're in unison on that, Tom. Go ahead, though. It's it's really it's really important. And now see here this is an individual who called on his family members in advance of the storm and friends and they made the right decision. And I'm not look if you're hunker down. And you're listening to us. Terrestrial. You're streaming us online Red Eye Radio if you're listening right now and you're hunker down. We're with you trust me. That's why we're here. There's a twenty some radio stations out of some two hundred with Westwood One. That's carrying this right now from LA to New York, and we are with you. And that's our focus at the same time. There are also a lot of people who evacuated and they went to Florida. I had some reports of folks that went up as far as New Jersey to get away from this. And and and we don't know where they are. But we're good and blessed to be able to have Westwood One network that covers so much of the country that can reach out to folks. And let them know there's a place on the radio that they can go to and get this kind of continuous coverage. But I can tell you strong in favor of airing on the side of caution evacuate. If there's an issue if you can some people can't, well, that's true. And that was. Exactly the situation when we had Katrina come in the ninth ward people they weren't necessarily in economic position for them to evacuate, and they surely wasn't public transportation driving down through the neighborhood asking people to to get out of there. And as as someone who got the opportunity to to meet with different people. The head come out of there. When they got busted they got bust up into Dallas. And I know that the church that I went to we became a shelter and some of the people when we were coming in and sharing their stories. We're just just I opening the water rising into the ninth ward faster than than they could even get upstairs and. And you know, there were people trapped in their addicts. And they didn't have any tools. It wasn't like I'm gonna go get my hatchet, and maybe a drill or or battery pack and stuff. No. They they fled for their lives and some people were out knocking on doors of neighbors. And as the water was rising within a matter of ten minutes. They were hanging onto the gutters of their home. And they were seeing all kinds of things snakes, alligators and other stuff. Fortunately, those kind of critters, and that kind of environment are just too worried about themselves to be out there trying to bite somebody. So pretty pretty terrifying story. Yeah. I can't imagine. Let's go to Bob in Scranton, Pennsylvania. You're on with Mark. And with Tom. Hi what I say. I'm not trying to scare people. I've been into. In and out the woods hunting and the swamps snakes deer different other animals and things I've seen the trails marked by the alligators down to the water. I've seen water moccasins along the banks. I know what these critters are capable of. And they're not worried about they're worried about surviving. And they're worried about eating too. So if you want to become part of a meal, tempt them have young or anything. What I want to start out with the water coming in. Thousands and thousands of septic tanks in the areas. All the way down the coast. All these septic tanks will overflow all the debris from the mall going to the water. Don't be animals that die with bacteria. They'll be gas stations where the oil and gas keep into the water that's floating down into neighborhoods. The cars and all the other gas. Thanks and other things that have their problems. A meeting different things that the people going to have to deal with you have poisonous spiders lizards. It would be like if you were a plane crash landed in the okay for not what do you do first off? You get your. Medical stuff that you have your first aid kit, and you food and water orders, very important if you have to drink, and you're the water that stay emergency. You must boil it issue. Equipment to boil stuff with you can make. And and and different weapons out of different stuff kissed a simple of gloom handle with a mice. Duct tape on if you're gonna get out anywhere, which she should go anywhere. Wait for rescue the water could get so high. It's spoiling one time a hurricane coming in about seven in. Seven and five years in Wilmington area. Some tropical storm spurts arena. Andrew, and of course, ninety six I spent a lot of time out. Surrounding area. My my was an outdoorsman and. In real danger because few coaches foot in freshwater this tremendous amount of bacteria in freshwater, not like salt water cutting put on a shelf. Duct taping your stuff on keeps on your shoot a habit, which you definitely need. But we're all going to be washed out of gas state teams all the glass bottles that are going to be floating hit ancient sides of buildings. You don't have to be walking anywhere. Species of snakes, I believe in North Carolina choice. This one is reading yellow kill a fellow red and black. They lack. A lot of snakes. If you ever see a snake, and he gets into the water, you could tell which way. As leasing coming towards you. When he hits the water. Boy, you're uplifting. Me. You're right on the. I could be very scary to people but slapped. My it's not first of all to boats, objects, even motorboats from things like that. There's a lot of debris in the water from all this stuff. Moon a second the health of. The retail sector now we just finished up a slew of. Earnings reports from likes of TJ Maxx Macy's JC. Penney and WalMart for TJ access seven percent combat mar max was. Just, fantastic Macy's is raising their full year guidance by twenty cents so we think this is. A bullish to have this pretty strong consumer. Backdrop right now people are feeling good and are willing to open their wallets and WalMart was able, to draft off of that. And JC Penney was, not the consumers. In great shape if you look at retail sales in the first half of the year we're talking north of five. Percent let us look at the big, picture now with Burt Flickinger managing. Director for, strategic. Resource group Burt. Always a pleasure always great to team. Up so let me ask you do we identify. Any trends here out of. The latest earnings a couple key trends one is that off Prices good as it's Ben year to date over this Labor. Day week weekend in the past quarter really, really strong seeing Ross stores very good TJ. Owner marshalls TJ Maxx etc very good the mass volume. Retailers defined by Cosco BJ's wholesale club WalMart target all the way down to Ollie's bargain. Stores are record results very strong same stores I seem to recall that whenever those off price stores do well luxury on the other extreme seems to do well as. Well Tiffany reported a very strong earnings race guidance Serna's doing very well, LVMH is doing well Burberry's spend. Relatively strong in the great thing about Tiffany's numbers Bob is in Asia plus ten percent same. Store sales Tiffany is is really doing well in. Defining luxuries growth worldwide back, to school how important has that been for some of these, stores like WalMart for. Example back to school Very important and over seventy five billion in sales yet the national retail federation's projecting, the, back to school will be. Slightly negative for the, first, time in, about. Three years. The retailers are offsetting it by capitalizing on the bankruptcy, of, toys r. us the bankruptcy of a lot of teen retailers and the bankruptcy, of a. Lot of sporting goods retailers so back to school in macro is essentially a little worse than flat but the Spanish speaking shoppers. Which account for about one quarter of, back to school shoppers national. Retail federation is reporting Spanish speaking families are spending twenty five percent more this year. Than prior years an extra one hundred. Forty eight. Dollars and this is also going to be the last day last weekend last summer. For a cheap media to communicate on Telemundo Latina magazine great distribution, and salons, to Spanish speaking Shoppers and get cheap media away from mainstream because with the elections coming up in the primaries media costs are going to skyrocket and set. Records really so the the election has an effect on retail the election at. The national level the state level the county, level and the local town level as a huge effect on retail, because retailers are trying to spend about two percent on advertising is percent of sales and the retailers simply can't. Afford it so that's where you're seeing the downdraft of penny and earlier, Bon ton and boss Cavs and toys r. us and others said literally could not. Afford, to advertise this much so target. And Macy's and WalMart in particular very effective in buying up front media. With some of the best copy and. Creative particularly target they had strongest same store sales for target and thirteen years and a big part of it is more advertising to, Spanish speaking shoppers as well as I Asian American African American Caucasian and United Nations of consumers you mentioned, penny a JC Penney how long can it go on. Like this Bob you're asking the tough question were. On this Labor Day week were, in the fifth, anniversary of Bill, ackman and Pershing square exiting their ignominious impact on JC Penney where my professional view cataclysmic results not understanding the rhythm of retail not understanding the detail of retail command and control a. Lot of poor decisions and even though they exited. Five years ago in my professional, view they impaired the company. You look at the data that's traded down since Labor Day twenty seventeen pennies bonds are down about twenty, percent yes is right aide as PetSmart the stock market is saying retails at an, all time. High which it is but the bond market says it's sticking, us gets the best of times and worst of times and bond markets saying worst of time Times for the undercapitalized retailers and let's talk about. Another loser and that's in this. Is not a critical comment this is a? Factual, comment.
