"Orange, lemon cherry, and lots of vitamin C, part of this complete breakfast. A couple of things to unpack there on that 1980s commercial city. Orange lemon cherries, Tony says it's all one flavor. That's what that's what the experts say. It's hard to imagine when you bite into a different color fruit loop, your brain is telling you one thing, but it's all the same flavor. I spent a long time believing that I was getting like 15 different flavors. Yeah. And that's a lie. I grew up living believing a lie. Oh my gosh, that's not the only lie you grew up believing, my friend. I know. The thing about vitamin C, did you know from vitamin C? What? So that was from cereal day the other day, and a couple of you were like, no, no, no, definitely, why would they have an orange one? You guys, why would they have an orange fruit loop? If you Google this, people have done a deep dive on it. I think even science has looked into this. Your orange fruit loop tastes exactly like the cherry froot loop or whatever, or I guess we shouldn't describe them as flavors, just colors. They're all the same flavor. So bizarre, but thank you for reaching out to you guys on serial day. I feel like this means something, but I didn't do too much research on the psychology of it. Taylor Swift, sociopath, or awesome individual. Taylor Swift's cereal of choice is cinnamon toast crunch. I feel like sociopaths would eat brand flakes. Actual deeds, you just had to sign it. And it was a deed to one square inch of land in the Yukon. I guess they go on eBay for like 20 bucks. If you still had one of these, incidentally, last time I bought cereal, I bought a box of cereal, it was almost 20 bucks for the box of cereal, too. It's Scottie and Tony. This might make you angry or make you excited to try something new, but some of those top selling cereals I bet you have never tried. It's hard to find just Canadian stats. They've surpassed the actual fruit loops in flavor. Lucky charms is number 6 on the list. Some of you have texted that one and admitted that you just eat the marshmallows, no shame. The number four bestselling cereal in North America is honey bunches of oats. Really? Frosted flakes, honey nut, Cheerios. It's number two. It's my wife's favorite. I was incredibly unfair. So you'd have like puffed rice, and that sort of thing. Yeah, shreddies. Just plain Cheerios. Which are fine. I still like plain Cheerios. Some of the other ones were just terrible. Here are the worst cereal flops of all time. Cereals that came out and barely sold anything because just a terrible idea. Okay. Frosted flakes, banana cream flavor. Okay. Fruity pebbles cupcake flavor. Sour patch kids cereal. SpongeBob flakes. That's just a blatant marketing nerd cereal. Pop tart cereal. So every little thing in your bowl was a tiny, tiny pop tart. How could that go wrong? I mean, I'm intrigued. Pop tarts are delicious. Anyway, failed. "Yeah, I do. I've got it in my collection. It's sitting in a car cabinet with my model cars sitting in the back of a model ute prior to place. Right, so how did you get it signed? Was it when it was coming around playing with the school kids? Did we used to play a lot of handball with school kids from memory? Unlikely he never came to my school. But a couple of years back, I think it was even during COVID. He did this promotion for one of his charities where he basically said, hey, I want to give my all these signed high bounce balls. All you do is send a letter and in that letter put one of those Australia posts like $10 prepaid statue with the return address on it and then how about three or four weeks later? In the mail of high bounce ball rides, signed by him. A couple of things on this. My mind, Kevin rod brought a load of those thinking this is going to be huge. This is going to be like fidget spinners. This is my super. And every time he moves house, his wife goes. He's going to get rid of those. Hundreds. COVID comes along and it's like, this is my moment. This is my crypto. And so you did that. You sent him a letter like the old fashioned way of entering a competition on the radio. Envelope. It was very old school. It's like, this is like how you used to eat things in the 90s. Yeah, aerial box returns. It cost me the cost of an envelope. And how did that raise money for charity? Yeah. I'm just saying golden grant is like it's like cdc milk plus honey sidebar lindsey. Let's have a sleepover any. But here's the thing. Cdc so good dry as well. It does you like. It's just a great snack. All around honestly i think all that's true of all cereal. I would say absolutely. Not all kids cereals. Now no fucking things but nothing on. Charms cheerios cheerios. Or i want to know what the nastiest cereal you've ever tried is. Did you seek the cereal out or did someone say. Hey this is gross. Tried out the official enter. Because it's technically my own fault for doing it but i've eaten a couple expired cereals before for the spectacle of it Eight like a five year. Old box of fruit brute that was really bad and one of my personal most nostalgic was the neo. Pets cereal that came out. 'cause i am a child of the nineties. That was that was a serious neo. Pets island berry crunch. And i always really loved that one obviously because it was like a licensed tien cereal at last very long and one of the friends. I've made to cereal. Communities name's gabe fonseca. Who runs a youtube channel called serial time Which i would recommend checking out and he also has an insane collection of cereal boxes. He's been like on the today. Show before talking about his cereal library of retro boxes and he's been a big help over the years and sending me some stuff and we've just become friends and one year. He sent me a still sealed box of the neo. Pets cereal despite it being expired for eleven years at that time i think i still try to dislike. Could write informative post about it and it tasted like it was eleven years old. Drywall soaked in expired wine. Basically but if we're talking about like actual fresh cereals it still tasted really bad for national cereal day. One year post release these two flavors a parody of honey bunches of oats called honey brunches votes and they were kind of hard to get they were a chicken and waffles cereal as well as a maple bacon donut cereal all. That sounds wrong. That is amazing and disgusting the chicken and waffles. One was all right. It was a good combination of salty and sweet but the maple bacon donut was so awful. Just really really dogs in strips mixed with miscellaneous sweetness and if we're not counting cereal there's also what came out recently was the mystery flavored pop tarts since we also covered pop tarts on my blog and podcast is because i see them as very adjacent to cereal in terms of the culture in the silliness of it. Yeah breakfast ritual and these mystery flavored pop tarts. I couldn't believe that it felt like. I was being actively punked while i ate them. They were very cheesy. In my opinion. I waste and very hard. So hard to describe they were like garlicky and onion and it turns out they were supposed to be like everything bagel flavored pop tarts but an absolute trick. They played on the world with that one. Especially because at first you could only get them in boxes like sixteen. I ended up to trolling some of my friends. Asking them what they thought of it. Wow that truly sounds nasty. i can't even imagine pretending to even everything bagel pop tart. What that's one. Why would they do that. If we're going to have a mystery flavor pop tart at should be like lemon custard. You know something that makes sense everything. Bagel is more savory exactly and we think pop tart says moore sweet. But i don't know. I think everything bagel books and everything but So okay let's let's go back to the fan base though. Like how are they interacting. How did this. I blow up. Was it immediate. I mean what was the journey here. Also you've got some famous fans. Who is your most famous fan. And why is it lin-manuel miranda certainly the most famous fan. That i'm aware of just because he's already he's collaborated with the mcelroy brothers before so he's familiar with their body of work and it was a surprise to me to hear that he also really loved our show in particular in terms of the fan base. It's kind of hard to compartmentalize everyone just because the people who listened to the podcast specifically aren't necessarily quite the same people a lot of the time as the ones who are following like the blog for up to the minute news about late a cereal products. I think people who listen to the podcast are more interested in the total ridiculousness of the subject matter rather than like a serious vested interest in trying every new cereal so there is an interesting intersection of groups there between people who are really nostalgic for this old foodstuff and looking to try the newest thing on the market as well as people who are just looking to check out and hear other people talk about something that they would probably never hunt down and try for themselves especially people who listen to our show from like overseas where there's literally no country in the world that has a serial game even close to america. There's just no limit to the breadth of the cereal aisle here which is not that great. My also diabetes epidemic. Okay blame cereal. I'm sarah little bit. I'm not blaming our guest. You know. we get kids hooked while they're young and that's not a great resume but yeah there are definitely international voyeurs who like to to sort of like watching animals that zoo see how crazy the serial game gets over here not price yes so there are lake times of year that are very important to the serial community and it seems like i mean especially halloween and then weirdly new years which i didn't know about until looking through your website but like usually new serials are announced at the beginning of the year. Sure why the start of the year tends to be so popular for new serials. It might just be like a business fiscal planning sort of thing. I'm not too knowledgeable about the actual you industrial process behind it does. It is a bit confusing. Considering how many people tend to make new year's resolutions to eat healthier and then they are beset on all sides by this tempting news that comes up but yeah i tend to be pretty pretty high variety but comes out at the start of the year versus something like halloween where the cereals are focused around the seasonality and the teaming of your your general mills monster cereals halloween captain crunch and not so many new pumpkin spice cereals as much as there used to be it was pretty insane for a while but i think they're sort of backing off that trump dan to pivot a little bit.
