Seattle to open more permanent COVID-19 vaccination sites in Rainier Beach, West Seattle, Lumen Field Event Center

"Been reporting how seattle is turning some of its testing sites into permanent vaccination sites starting today the rainier beach side is prepared to give about two thousand shots a week and so is second location in west seattle. Kyw's josh amac nickeled visited the rainier beach vaccination clinic today joshua high and describe this vaccination site for us well like every other side. It's open to people who are eligible. Mostly that means seniors over sixty five but there are a few other categories to like home health workers anyway. Everyone who shows up here has an appointment and they walk up and they check in at a table and then when it's their turn they passed. They passed through one of several shipping containers on a train or on the back of a truck and inside there is an administrator in a little booth. And there's someone from the fire department and that person gives you your shot and then you walk out the back of the shipping container into an outdoor area and then you hang out under a tent for like fifteen minutes with a view of the lake all right well. Did you get to speak to anyone there. Yeah i spoke to a lot of seniors there in the recovery tent. And they told me before today trying to get a vaccination appointment was a real chore. Roberta bird right said she couldn't sleep. She wanted an appointment so badly. Given times i wake up you know in the morning. Three o'clock two o'clock in during the throughout the day. And then of course the site that we look. It's like places. Like well up in tacoma and you know really far out. And i'm not going to those places so i just kept looking and looking so now opened up so she also got on wait lists at pharmacies and they told her they'd call but they never did and then she heard from a friend that the southeast seattle senior center was helping seniors make appointments and so she called. They called me back right away like within a few days and schedule being. I'm here bird right. Told me that she had concerns about the safety of the vaccine so it was reassuring for her to go through a community group. Yeah that's good news that roberta got her shot. And just you know. We've been hearing stories about grandkids helping their grandparents schedule. An appointment you know for a variety of reasons you know. Maybe the grandparents don't have a smartphone or computer or maybe like roberta's case the the grandparents are trying to just striking out but in this case it sounds like the senior center is stepping in. Yes and that is the strategy here. They're still far more demand for vaccines than there is supply and so these new vaccination sites are favoring referrals they're working closely with community groups and those groups are doing the outreach. Linda green runs the southeast seattle senior center. That's the group that helped this person earlier. Find their appointment and she says she got her staff spending all their time. Basically going after vaccination appointments for seniors. But it's hard because there just aren't enough vaccines so she said it feels like a competition. Well it's a competition because now we're have folks who are competing you've got the folks who are seventy five years old and older. We've got the sixty five year old. We've got those folks who are under fifty but are also caretakers for those who are sixty five and over or seventy and over. And i know that we have to start from the top the most vulnerable and work our way down but it still is somewhat competitive as to. Who's going to get it first. So all of those those areas we still have to define but we are of the opinion that the goal is for everyone to get vaccinated so whomever we can fit into that classification. That's what we're doing. Yeah and in that competition for vaccines. It helps to have a community group to help you get an appointment. But eventually officials tell me the problem will cease to be a vaccine shortage problem and will become a communication problem. You know trying to get enough people to show up and use all the vaccines right. And we're hearing. There will be more and more vaccinations slots opening up later as well and and another thing. We learned today. Josh was later this month. There's going to be another max. Vaccination site opening up in seattle At the former centurylink field now known as linfield yes and with that site. They're going to start small in the middle of the month but as soon as enough vaccines are on the way that site will be able to push out twenty one thousand vaccinations per day. They told me yeah. That sounds like a lot of shots. When is that going to be. They wouldn't say for sure. Only the it'll happen as soon as possible. And if you're a senior and you want to be proactive linda. Green at the southeast seattle senior center says give them a call. And they'll help you. You don't even have to be in seattle proper anywhere in king. County is fine and then of course you can also use the washington phase finder website. Which helped at least one senior here today.

Seattle to open more permanent COVID-19 vaccination sites in Rainier Beach, West Seattle, Lumen Field Event Center

"Seattle is setting up permanent mass vaccination sites at the lumine field events center also in rainier beach and west seattle seattle mayor. Jenny durkan says the expansion will reach thousands more vulnerable residents each week and thousands more with enough supplies. And i spoke with mayor durkan about this expansion and why it is so needed here. Despite the fact that seattle was the first to kind of experienced both hospitalization deaths of covid because of the hard work sacrifices that the businesses and residents have made we have for the top thirty cities or so in america the lowest level of disease in hospitalization and part of the reason for that is. We're able to stand up just a first in class testing system. We wanna first in class vaccination system and so we're building the infrastructure to make permanent some of our vaccinations sites and to be able to be one of the first cities in the country to vaccinate all of its residents that need to be vaccinated and of course it requires us to get a steady dose of the vaccines. But it's looking like we will in some very excited. They will make a couple of our vaccination sites permanent We'll stand up a mass vaccination site and we'll open additional sites as time permits well. We're the new mass vaccination site you're talking about coming online. The new the new mass vaccination side is going to be what's now called. Bloomfield used to be centurylink people. Think of where the seahawks play. And how about what's going to be going on at the rainier beach and west seattle facilities those way. We'll make the rainier beach and west seattle facilities permanent vaccine sites It's incredibly important just to be able to reach all parts of our community particularly those who've been hardest hit by the virus and we know clearly from the data that Our communities of color in particular have been hit by cove not just the health impacts but the economic impact and the health impacts have been significantly disproportionate. So i'm very excited. We'll be able to keep that rear beach Facility open and have it as a permanent vaccine location and also very excited that we can keep west seattle open because as you know not only are the number of underserved communities in that area but it also because the west seattle bridge it's access to other parts of the city has been significantly diminished. So we've got to bring the vaccine to the people that need it absolutely. You mentioned the communities of color. Do you know what the vaccination rates are looking like when it comes to inoculating these communities much more percentage of the population. Getting the disease and much lower portion. Actually getting the vaccines. That's why the city of seattle has stepped up and are are. We are really providing that equity lens or vaccinations and really proud of seattle fire department. And all the work. They've done but very proud of the community based organizations who have stood up helped us implement a program so that we've been able to do pop up clinics in the communities for those who've been under served and seventy percent of the vaccinations that we've been able to deliver have been to buy pock community. We're really pushing with our community. Based partners to get those people who might not have access to healthcare. They might be hesitant to get the vaccine or have language barriers and by doing that. We're we're reaching the people that that are most vulnerable and need the vaccine. Will you mentioned hesitancy in the groups that you've had discussions with we've heard a lot about this certain communities of color just being simply afraid to get given the us history and medical practices here in our country. But do you really think it's an issue or are we just talking about lack of access to the vaccine. So i think it is both i think right now because we are in the period where they're scarcity. We're working hard to make sure that we get the shots arms and and and getting them to the right people so using the lens for that soon. I think we will have enough vaccine to deliver. And then we'll have to shift to try to get people who would be hesitant to come. You have to remember that. For the last four years the federal government waged war against are immigrants and refugees. It's hard to then turn on a dime and tell them they can now trust government. And so that's why it's very important to have community based partners that people that speak the language or that are trusted messengers and has the new mapping tool created by the university of washington helped you achieve these goals or is there something more that can better serve these bypass communities the tool has been very helpful because it gives us the actual data showing Vice zip code where the disease is most prevalent and so we can see using that tool that we have not been able to reach some of the communities most at risk for the disease that helps us target zip codes but we still need the community based partners who can work with people that they trust to get them to the vaccine sites.

Bob Stolzberg, Voice Pioneer, Shares Some Wise Words

"Hey folks I'm Bob Stolberg the founder and CEO of Voice X. P.. I started voice. Xp back in January of twenty seventeen. So it's been three years We basically build voice APPS and most recently we released a platform that allows anybody to create their own voice APP With not coding. It only takes minutes and the voice apps that they can create a premium meaning. They're built for businesses to get Roi and they do things like syntax tax messages and emails. But we didn't start that way. We started off three years ago building custom skills for businesses and we were really looked at as an agency or a services model and This year we twenty nineteen. We pivoted to assess model with our product platform. So I like to think of Ben around a little bit. Some of our customers are hallmark. CENTURYLINK MERC- Tivo CLICO Square. Banner Health Amazon with we've got a lot and what's what's great is. I think we've covered a lot of ground. Meaning we've delivered for a lot of different customer summer doing diverse things both on Alexa and Google and Samsung so by by being early in the space That's that's really helped us out because it gives us the insight into what customers want where the technology is going and certainly given us some edges and I'm like for example. Were the only ones in the world who have a craigslist simple platform to build skills with these advanced features that you know you can deploy this stuff. Globally globally. So by being a first market mover invoice has been awesome but it's been a lot of work And a lot of trial and error fillers too. So I think it's cool like bring Bob on Bob's local. Were both Saint Louis guys and so I said Hey I want to get you on the podcast. And he's like you. Do you want me to come on. Live and I was like yeah when I so. It's cool though because you know Bob has been in the space like he said for three years and the recent I wanted to bring him on was as like we're we're recording this in the middle of December twenty nineteen and so we're heading into twenty twenty and I'm thinking hurry I want to get. It's somebody on the shell light into like what those first few formative years were like with somebody that's been on the forefront of Alexa so just voice technology general and so Bob. Why don't you share with other lake in the first few years you know? Let's say call it. Twenty seventeen to twenty twenty a little bit before that. What like what have been so your biggest learnings as this thing has evolved and matured in the way that you sort of view the technology today as opposed to maybe initially when I started to get involved in this space? Yeah it's a really good question I don't thank. You need to hire an expensive agency. I know you don't need to hire a developer for this because we built a platform that allows you to crank stuff out and I think there's a lot of misconceptions about voice where you know you really need to dig into a strategy. Excuse me and figure out. Well what are we going to do. WHO's the audience? We're GONNA go after and the simple answer. Is You need to treat your voice experience just like your website and when I talked to my customers I I said when you launched your website in the nineties or two thousands whatever it was you had something really simple and you know I. It told people about you your products and services says and you know maybe you had a forum on there they could opt into contact your sales or something and get your contact info. Let's start with that. You know you don't need to have this campaign that needs to run and attract a certain demographic it's great to have a contest or or some purpose for your skill but you should just treat it as a basic identity tea and you know just seeing We worked on really big hundred dollar campaigns down to two thousand five hundred dollars two hundred dollars a month skills and and I've just seen how easy it is now to create these voice apps with the right tools and a good marketer should know how to market their a website and by looking at it through that lens going. Hey if my voice APP is just like my website. How am I going to get it out there? They're able to do

You know? Maybe have a book the you can read if you can't go on your phone. Centurylink executives on Wednesday. That's yesterday. Blamed a faulty electric electronic unit called a network management card for the failure on December twenty seven twenty eight national service outage that affected tens of thousands of people in New Mexico. The failed unit made by California based in Finance Corporation, clogged CenturyLink internet services with a tidal. Wave of faulty messages state government affairs director, Johnny Montag told the New Mexico PRC during the presentation. Do the PR see yesterday morning. It overloaded the system that caused a two day outage that affected people from Massachusetts to Washington state, including many internet customers into Mexico and people who phones or based on voice over internet or Voy up rising users lost phone service during the outage because that company relies on CenturyLink. So if you have a rising like, I do we had no cell service. Verizon. Is relying on CenturyLink emergency nine one one calls where it in places, including Albuquerque Las Cruces because many people didn't have phone service to make calls, and because the lack of internet service and city system from automatically routing calls the distance did come through the emergency answering system so CenturyLink laying the blame on themselves gonna refreshing take time out we'll come back, and we'll talk to the bookshop, man..

"I'm doing excellent. Thank you very much for taking my call. Okay. Christian kind of continue with the routers and modems have a out in the country. And all we have is DSL. I don't have an option for cable wherever I have a separate modem and a separate router. And if I'm traveling cameras from security cameras, and of course, the public was out here not quite often but often enough where it does they come up in contention. And of course in my cameras. I can't watch them until I come moment reset both been bring them up in the proper order. So when that plus the second guard is you know, the best I can do download a six and a half to seven beg. I'm working for help on a going be with two and one router modem combination when I should look for and be what should I try to do to maximize throughput? So I can watch something streaming without all of a sudden buffering and stuff on the right way. When you connect directly to the DSL modem, do you get more speed than on? The wireless part. That's gonna be the best speed. You're going to get us. Why mask on that? Keep it wired all the time. Okay. I'll see the limitation is DSL here because you're in a rural area DSL, which is a technology. The phone company developed as a way of sending data down a avoi- slide a two wire plain old telephone line is limited in distance and past two miles away from the central office. It doesn't work at all. And it gets slower and slower is it's farther away. So you are probably right on the edge of what of what works. How far outta town. Are you? Well, two miles from any commercial activity or activities. You might might be you might you know, you're lucky you're getting eight megabits. Let's put put it that way. So that's the real limited nothing. No quit. You can add to your end is going to fix that. Okay. You you might talk to your DSL provider, or you know, one of the things about DSL. It's different than a cable modem is the FCC requires phone companies to allow third parties access to their wires. So you you can with the cell usually get it, not only from the incumbent carrier from AT and T or frontier. Whoever your phone company CenturyLink, but you may also be able to get it from a third party like DSL extreme or somebody else. Now, they can't fix the problem of distance. But they may be offering better DSL technologies. There's newer technologies like ADSL to in some cases, they'll bond to ADSL lines together to get you better throughput, there may be ways. But it has to happen at the office that can't happen at your end. You got. So you might check around my guess. Is you? I'm fact, I'm impressed. You're getting eight megabits. Six and seven is probably the best. I do. Yeah. It's because you're right at the edge of the capabilities. If you got your neighbors mile farther outta town are getting anything. Yeah. So, you know, you're you is it is at CenturyLink. You're getting the service from. Yeah. You might ask them. They may have some better technology at their. But my guess is they'll say, well, sir. I'm sorry. You're so far away were you know, this is the best we can do. Yeah. Or something. So well, and by the way, I'm starting to hear about DSL providers doing that the other thing some providers are doing is going to fiber. But the same reason you don't have cable is the reason have fiber expensive to trench out. And when you trenching out to areas with a population density is light, you know, there's no money in it. The benefit you live in a beautiful area. Your neighbors are far away you've got land. But you don't have internet. That's that's the trade off. Now there are there are internet's services that don't require trenching microwave, sometimes and you might check and see if there's a.

It was a network some sort of network card that blew up. It was just a hardware failure. Really like with anything else in a micro services architecture environment. But I just can't believe that this is from two thousand fourteen and now we're five years later, and it happens again state exact same thing. I'm sure it is the exact same thing. Yeah. Has a single point of failure that failed again again apparently works for five years failed again. Waiver five years in stops working. I mean this happens if anyone has had a compete nowadays, you we start to see the evidence of this of this of a hardware issues in the environment. Because when when in this late seventies eight it's rot the entire eighties in probably half of the ninety s we were buying brand new computers at the rate of 'bout one every year and a half. So if you had a computer you had to get a new one every year and a half to two years two years is really keeping an old clunker alive..

"But also your Beata CenturyLink the CenturyLink nine one one network called outage. Did you look into this? Did you find out what this was? Yeah. It was a network some sort of network card that blew up. It was just a hardware failure. Really like with anything else in a micro services architecture environment. One thing goes out, there's more than one or two single points failure. And I mean, it doesn't have to be you can have redundancy. If you were, but no no why why bother I was able to check some somewhat happened to CRC all these things they used to have memories. I remember when the IBM PC came out, they'd have you could buy cheap memory, which had all the bits. And then it was more expensive memory. They had the load a little extra chip a parody ship to make sure that the memory was doing it staying and it was accurate. You had the parody chip. Cost too much where they did they worked ninety percent. It's garish. We don't oh, I didn't know anything about this. What what is this magical chip do? The magical ship. I think it could maintain. I'm not sure anymore. I used to know. But I think it maintains them like a check some value for the what was in the memory itself. And if that, and it would check against it writing. Got it got a different hash or a different checks out something and it was not as good memories, gone bad. And then we don't have that anymore. There's no reason for it. Because it's like the failure rate is so low right with the way things are that you don't care. And so you just let them sing slide. And I think that's what happened with this. Is that having a backup redundant network card? I'm pretty sure does what it was when I read it It's an said. eight s fine. I was able to find a clip with someone in charge over there at CenturyLink for the first time since this outage. I was able to talk to someone from CenturyLink on camera. Just a short time ago the bottom line here is that. Well, yes, this system is back up and running. They still don't know exactly. What went wrong, and they're trying to figure that out. What are you doing to make sure something like this doesn't happen? Again. You know, it's a great question. That's not quite shit. We feel very confident the system is stable. It's up and running. We don't anticipate any issues days after nine one one outage in Washington caused forty five hundred calls to fail CenturyLink that telecommunications company responsible says they're narrowing in on the problem. But still can't tell us exactly what caused that six hour failure. They know the outage was due to a technical error in third party vendors, call router. But when I asked that technical error was they said, they don't know to right now we need to break. Down every point of contact between the nine one one center in Washington where centers and the centrist CenturyLink data centers as well to make sure we've exactly found the reason for the outage, and how are we going to fix it prevent future? The Washington emergency management division believes the nine one one system is stable now, but it's still wants assurances from century lake something like this won't happen. Again.
