Disney scraps plans for new Florida campus as fight with Gov. Ron DeSantis continues
"Plans for a new Disney campus in Florida are off the table. I'm Lisa dwyer. The Walt Disney Company says it's scrapping plans to build a new campus in Central Florida. The company had planned to relocate about 2000 employees from Southern California to Florida to work in digital technology, finance, and product development. Disney's announcement follows a year of attacks from Florida governor Ron DeSantis and the legislature, Disney filed a First Amendment lawsuit against desantis and other officials last month. Disney had planned to build the campus about 20 miles from the giant Walt Disney World theme park resort, but a company official says in a memo to employees that new leadership and changing business conditions prompted Disney to abandon those plans, I'm Lisa dwyer

Ron DeSantis' Fight With Disney Shows He's Ready to Go
"Mark Davis doesn't think Charlie's right, mark points out that the grassroots that Charlie is referring to are the only trumpers, Mark believes that people who feel that way that desantis is falling a little bit flat are simply people who want Trump and only Trump. Mark may be right. On the other hand, there are plenty of people, I think, who are mixed on this and recognize that Ron DeSantis hasn't yet officially declared his candidacy. However, he's doing a lot of things that seem to suggest that he is ready to go. This fight with Disney, and I admit, you probably sense it. I'm not a fan of this. I'm not a fan of the state of Florida, taking on Disney. I think Disney has been a pretty good corporate member. Neighbor in Florida. They've had a carve out. They've gotten tax breaks, but every major company does, and I am mindful of the thousands and thousands of people who call Disney their employer. Disney is not a little blip on the radar, Disney is a major reason for tourism and entertainment in Central Florida and beyond, but of course Disney has gone woke. And a lot of people are fed up with companies that have decided to dive into the culture war.

The Hugh Hewitt Show: Highly Concentrated
No More Corporate Rule in Florida!
"No corporations should be running their own world. They all have free speech rights, and I am a big believer in citizens united. And Disney can strike back if they want at the governor. I'm pretty sure bob Iger is too smart to do that. And I'm pretty sure, Budweiser and Disney did not intend to be in the middle of political debates, which served neither company, nor was it obligatory to do so, and the phrase screw around and find out that's the PG version is what both of them are finding out. Budweiser in a world of hurt. But let's begin with the opening of the governor's press conference if we can cut number 22 governor Ron DeSantis yesterday on Disney. Now here is an example of something we didn't necessarily think we would be needing to do, but it's something that we have to do. We have a government of laws that said, not a government of men, and that includes the law being superior to big corporations, even corporations, as big and powerful as Walt Disney Company. They are not superior to the laws that are enacted by the people of the state of Florida. And if you remember 2022, we had a special session of the Florida legislature, senator commissioner Simpson was the Senate president at the time, some of these members were there, where we said, you know, this idea of one corporation having its own government in Central Florida is something that is no longer in the best interest of the state of Florida. So we put down the marker that we were going to be going in a different direction. And a lot of people didn't think that would be anything that would even be possible given how much heft and how much power that this one company had withstood. And so my mantra was, you're not going to have Disney have its own government in Central Florida. They're going to live under the same laws as everybody else. Pay their fair share of taxes and honor the debts that they've accumulated over these years. And so we then had to, as we are getting into this calendar year, put the finishing touches on, okay, what does that look like? How do you bring that vision into a reality? And there were certain things you could have done. I mean, for example, could have just said, you know, just dissolve the district and let the local governments take it. The problem with that is like the local government here in Orange County was very clear. If they had to assume the bonds, they were going to raise people's taxes. And that was totally unacceptable. We were not going to make people in Central Florida pay taxes for Disney's debts.

12-year-old among suspects in killing of 3 teens in Florida
"Three suspects have been named in the fatal shootings of three teens last week in Central Florida. One of the suspects is just 12 years old. The three victims and their accused killers had all been in the same car at the same time last week, says Marion county sheriff Billy Woods, on WF TV. There is no honor among the thieves. And at some point, these three individuals turned on our three victims and murdered them. On March 30th, the body of 16 year old Layla silvernail was found at the side of a road in the Ocala area, a day later a teenage boy was found dead, and the day after that another girl shot to death in the trunk of silvernails car, a 16 year old remains at large and is considered dangerous. The sheriff told the media not to blame guns for these deaths. We do not hold our juveniles, accountable. He says all the teens had some type of loose gang affiliation. I'm Jackie Quinn.

"Hold you only new. I love to see during the breaks. The people who are speculating about what we're talking about with the microphones off and what they think we're saying and then I always think about if they just heard the conversation we just had or as he land said if they could read our lips. Don't give them ideas, man. The water boys of Central Florida says on Twitch. If I had their jobs, I wouldn't speak to anybody on the weekend or even after the show. I just communicate in grunts and pointing. Well, sometimes. Depends on what kind of day it is. Ashley took a half day yesterday because she had an appointment to go to like in the middle of the day, so basically she was home minutes after I was. And then at one point, because she knows that her new schedule has been encroaching on my quiet time. Yeah. I'm a personal time. Yeah, and Hershey's waking up early. Oh, yes. And so at one point yesterday, she literally looked at me and goes, so do you want me to be quiet for like an hour? That's adorable. Just tossing it out there. What do you say? I couldn't say. I was like, that was fine. What if you would have said, finally? Thought you would never ask. Courtney does that sometimes she'll tell me something and she'll be like, sorry, that wasn't a very good story. I'd be like, yes, it was. I can listen to her and talk about anything. She's the best. But you will never know what we were just talking about, and we can't say that. The radio. So there is an update on a story that's very different in tone, but it's something that's a lot of people have been talking about. And I think it's really fundamentally interesting to think about as bad as it is. This is a 6 year old kid who shot his teacher and the news update is that his family is speaking out for the first time. And I guess this kid was just really, really, really, really troublesome all around and the parents said I was worried that the family came out and said, well, maybe the teacher shouldn't be such a bitch. She's pretty shootable. No, the parents said that they actually had to deal with the school where they would bring the kid to school and stay in the classroom with him all day every day. One parent would be with this kid in the classroom every single day. And this was like the first time that they didn't do that, that the 6 year old pulled out the gun. People even afford guns if they can't go to work. They got to sit with their kid all day. To me, there's some things going on there though, but doesn't that show in some way that the parents are actually, they're not what you think they could have been. I thought that they would just be like, shooting up meth in the bathroom and not paying any attention to the kid. You know, I don't know that my initial thought or idea of them went that far, but no matter what, they're still parents that own a firearm that did not have it under some sort of luck that did not have it in a place where the kid could not get to it and bring it to school and shoot his teacher. So as much as yes, they were spending time at the school to make sure that the kid was well behaved, they still had the kid that had a gun in the place where the kinetics. I'm glad you said that, see you later. Because the parents claim that the gun was securely put away. And my answer to that is my more answer to that would be the study said that it sounds like a lot. Yeah. Well, here's the obvious answer. The idea that a 6 year old could take your gun and bring it to school shows flat out that your gun was not properly secured. The act itself reveals that you did not do a good enough job keeping that firearm safe because we're not talking about an 18 year old who somehow figured out the code to your secure gun case and found out where the ammunition was. Older kids are smarter and they could do stuff. But a 6 year old gaining access to your gun says to me, if you could take that and get to school with it, that you weren't being a responsible gun owner to begin with. I think it just proves that. But they were saying that's not the case. This is from a BuzzFeed news, they say, in their first public statement about the shooting, this is the family of the 6 year old who shot his teacher teachers doing all right, by the way. The family said they were responsible gun owners and kept firearms out of children's reach. Well, not this one, not your own child. The firearm are sun access was secured. How do you square that? Well, our son knows the password. It was secured. He's 6 years old. He got the gun. How do you square that? The firearm are sun access was secured. It seems like they don't want to take any responsibility here. At 6 years old, I barely knew the password to my security system. Yeah, at 6 years old, I would not be able to, if my parents had gone properly stored away. And it took me a long time to realize it was my birthday backwards. It was right in front of you. Right on his face, this seems like a lie, because if you have a 6 year old, you could simply put the gun up so high that the 6 year old wouldn't be able to get to. Yeah, kids are short. You could do it to a million things to secure this. Their son, who they said has, quote, an acute disability was under a care plan that included one of his parents being in class with him every day. Imagine what it would look like if he had an obtuse disability. I can not believe I've never even heard of that happening where the parents have to be in class with the 6 year old every single day. The week the shooting happened was the first week neither parent accompanied him in class they said, additionally, our son is benefited from an extensive community of care that also includes his grandparents working alongside us and other caregivers to ensure his needs in accommodations are met. The week of the shooting was the first week we were not in class with him. We were regret regret our absence on this day for the rest of our lives. And that's what the family is saying right now. But to me, here's the picture they're trying to paint. They're trying to tell us, look. This kid is a monster. He's a monster. He's a 6 year old little monster who we have to watch it every second. We're trying to be the best parents we could. You don't understand. We've created a monster. Yeah, we literally created a monster. This kid is a devil incarnate in this classroom and it's hard for you to wrap your head around that sometimes. But I don't think it's impossible. I think some kids, every once in a while, one in a million or whatever, you get these kids that are born that are just kind of evil. That just have something different in their body. I saw they hook batteries up to hamsters. Yes, yeah, all the warning signs. They're little psychotic kids. That's what they are, I think. And I think it's very possible. Now it's also possible that this kid came from a house with terrible parenting and nature versus nurture kind of thing. But I think sometimes people just think immediately, if a kid is bad, blame parent. Kid bad blame parent. Kid bad blamed parent. But in a lot of cases, I think there are parents who are trying really hard, but for a variety of reasons, sometimes the kids are done. It's just be like this. Sometimes it just has I can excuse the parents partially for saying, hey, as it turns out, we're trying our best, but we just have a really bad kid. If that is the case, you should try even harder to make sure the kid can not get his hands on a firearm. Or any other weapon. How long did we hear the parents say this? The reason why we have the gun in the first place is because we're afraid of the kids because we're afraid of the kid. We're afraid of the 6 year old. That's the reason why we have the gun. That argument forthcoming, I think. What do you think about this? How do you present something like this? Go to the news junkie dot com and hit record on your first dispatch now. When a hurricane strikes, people often turn to family and friends for a place to stay or other support. For example, Central Florida has a large Puerto Rican population. So many residents hosted friends or relatives after hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico in 2017. Fernando Rivera is director of the Puerto Rico research hub at the university of Central Florida. He says after Maria, Florida's then governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency that mobilize resources for displaced people. So Central Florida became a destination where Puerto Ricans could go to recover and movement between the island and mainland remains fluid. People will span a little bit of time here in the continental U.S., but they go back to Puerto Rico if the opportunity arise, Rivera's Central Florida's experience after Maria highlights how important it is to consider regional ties in disaster planning. Some of the work that we've been doing is what happens to those receiving communities that perhaps you don't go through that natural disaster event, but you have to respond based on the makeup of your population, it says building relationships between communities early can help ensure that people are ready to help when disaster strikes. "Whenever I do a title that has anything to do with conflict or leadership, either one doesn't matter. People look at it, they get interested. So when I put them together, it's interesting because people got to freak out. What do you mean? Leaders look for conflict. It's true. They do. It might be a little bit over the top, but I know you want to be better leader, no matter what you do. But you don't want to hear anything about conflict, do you? In real life, you don't want to come here. You want things to be easy and common. That's cool. Why can't we just get along? Well, listen, coming up here very soon. You're maybe going through what I just went through. Every year, this time of year, somebody in my family. We have 5 or 6 households here within about an hour where I live, our family, a little bit spread out, but still in Central Florida. And about a month ago, the conversation starts to happen. So where are we getting together for Thanksgiving? Who's going to have it this year? I wouldn't hear it there. Are you going to go there? What are you going to do? And then suddenly, people just, I don't know why. They kind of like, I want it. You had it last year, and it starts. And I just sit back and just like I relax. Because I learned time ago to expect it's going to happen. Expect people in the nicest way to bump into each other. They're just going to do that. And we'll figure it out. And we have, by the way, we know where we're going, which is kind of cool. We're actually driving away for Thanksgiving. That's awesome. Because the only bad thing is I have to drive. The good thing is, I don't have to cook a bunch of stuff here. So saying the word no, if something that kind of creates conflict it is the most powerful word you have, I think you should say it more than you are right now, but still, when you do, when you say no, you kind of put a block up, and it creates conflict in things. Saying yes, when others agree or disagree, I think sometimes could even more difficult. Again, why can't we all get along? Well, the answer is we can, however, the truth is that conflict is always going to happen. When does it happen? Now, it might be argued that conflict happens when you get together with yourself. Have you ever done that? That's weird. Okay, let's get real come in here a second. All I know I know I know but I spent a lot of time with myself and a lot of time with other people. I can tell you that almost everybody I know is in conflict with themselves at some time. And it kind of makes you mad, doesn't it? But any time, in real life, the two or more people get together, there is a chance for conflict. Especially if you have a common goal. And everyone is on the same page. Wait a second. Everybody's on the same page when you come and go and there's conflict. Yeah, it's gonna be there. I know you don't like that dude. You don't expect that. Why should that happen? What? We're on the same page. We agree with each other. We want the same result and there is still conflict. Have you ever worked in a team environment? I bet you have. And everybody has their own way of doing things, and everybody has to find their own place in the hierarchy to get things done. And it's really difficult to do, and it's hard to believe when you think about it. We all want the same thing. Everybody's going for the same goal. And yet, we're bumping into each other. You can't seem to get along. It's not that, though. So it's not just a matter of how positive your project is. It's not just matter that everybody has a different idea about how to reach the outcome. Everybody has a different right way. Everybody has a different wrong way. You may have noticed that, but as a leader, and you are a leader come forth, you are leader. Whether you're running your household, you're running your family, you're running the baseball team, the softball team, you're running your office, whatever it happens. But you are. But you approach conflict like I do. A simple Y in the road of progress. That's it. Things are going to change. Whether we agree or not agree, a decision is about to be made as part of the process and that leads everybody to the outcome they desire. Now, even if everybody is a different direction that we want to go, we're still heading the same direction. And that means little iterations little lefts and rights all along the way. And if you have your mind on that, you understand. As a leader as a mom, heck is a mom and a dad. As a manager, anybody responsible for moving forward eventually will learn to simply accept. That conflict is that decision point what had happened. So really think about this for just a moment, because a lot of times people get really upset. Why can't they do this? Why can't I do that? Why do they have to get in the way? Why does the no? Come on, let's just do this thing. You take a breath. You sit back you expect it. You know what's going on? One more thing, get a little closer here. It's entirely likely that you will be the only person in the entire room. That has heard anybody talk about this. And it's sitting in the back of your mind somewhere and you're going to see it happen. It's going to be like x-ray vision. It's going to happen, you're going to see the conflict pop up, and you'll be sitting back on land and see what's happening here. See where everybody's coming from. What do you do? Well, you don't get emotionally fired up, do you? Other people get to do that. You don't scream and yell. Other people get to do that. You don't freak out. Or something else in a creative way. Because other people get to do that. No, no, no, no. You could. You're really good at that. I know you've done that before. We all have. And if you had to fire yourself up right now, scream and yell and freak out. Admit yourself right now, you'd be good at it. Just admit it. What is that what you want to do? Not really. It doesn't get us anywhere. It doesn't get us where we want to go. Conflict remember is just another step in the process is just something that has to happen. There's nothing in there inherently good about it or bad about it. It's just something we're going through. If you think about it like that, you can navigate it easily. You may not have thought about it like that before. Taking those emotions and setting them back and taking that 30,000 foot view, looking upon what is happening understanding everybody else around you very likely is not even thinking about it. And if you understand that, that doesn't really matter. No, it doesn't. What matters is getting to your outcome. You want to really cool secret? "This is wet notes here on scuba shock radio for monday. September twenty seventh two thousand and twenty one first up. I want to congratulate tech clark and a dive locker. Podcast on celebrating the second anniversary for those who don't know about this. Podcast tech. Started this to help die professionals with various topics and techniques. But it's not just for dive professionals. I remember listening to the first episode. Way back in two thousand nineteen just before dima that year i've come to look forward to each weekly episode tech plans to keep the show going and has teed up a lot of great new content for the year year ahead. So i'd encourage you to check out the dive locker podcast. There's a lot of great information and perspective on things that hopefully will give you something to think about. Scuba shack is a proud patron of the dive locker. By the way tech also hosts a podcast titled the league of extraordinary divers. Where you can listen to some of the giants of our industry. Great job tech. Keep it coming now. I don't know what it is. But i seem to be a sucker for a message in a bottle story. So here's another one this time. The story involves a bottle that was washed up on the shores of the big island of hawaii. The bottle started his journey thirty seven years ago from japan and it was put in the water by school children. As part of an experiment in monitoring ocean currents the number of bottles were cast into the ocean in nineteen eighty-four from choshi highschool hawaii's about six thousand kilometers or four thousand three hundred miles from the launch point now. The bottle was found by abbie graham while her family was visiting a beach near hilo. It is estimated that about seven hundred and fifty of these bottles were tossed into the ocean between nineteen eighty four and nineteen eighty five. The last time one was found was in two thousand and two on kake. Jima island overall. The bottles have been found in seventeen. Different locations including okinawa the philippines china and even the west coast of the united states. I just get fascinated by these stories and often wonder just how many messages in bottles are out there in the ocean now. Last week we got an email from the clearly clearly came in resorts and it wasn't good. News clearly came in resorts include cobalt coast on grand cayman. Little came beach resort and cayman. Brac beach resort. The news informed us that the cayman borders will remain closed until two thousand twenty two. Now that's tough at a recent press conference to premier indicated that phase. Three of the original plan will start sometime. In february given the rise in cove in nineteen cases the resorts are now planning on opening on february. Fifth two thousand twenty two. Now this has been a really tough situation. If you remember way back in april i reported that the plan was to open in late april or early may two thousand and twenty one. It's been a long and difficult road for a lot of places. Surely the caymans are feeling abroad. We hope it gets resolved before october. Twenty twenty two trip yet. That on certain there's been a great deal of communication coming from tom. Ingram the president and ceo of dima the dive equipment marketing association regarding the two thousand twenty one show in las vegas. Tom unequivocal be states. That the show has absolutely no plans. Of cancelling now they did indicate that accordance with the local health mandates. Everyone will be required to wear a mask on the exhibit floor. There are several large past exhibitors. Who are forgoing the show this year causing some to question whether it should even take place. I know we've been getting a lot of surveys from our vendors as to whether we plan to go or not right now matt and i will be there. Tom indicated that it would be extremely difficult to cancel at this late date. Given the contracts that are in place and that if it were cancelled it would seriously impact demon's ability to put on these shows in the future. So we're looking forward to a successful show this year out in las vegas and finally today. I wanna talk about a piece of underwater camera gear that you might just want to consider. There was an article from sport diver magazine by john widow titled great camera accessories for underwater photography. It was a scuba lab review of the products that the staff took diving at alexander springs in central florida. First on the list was a sea life. Sport diver smartphone housing. Now that's pretty cool. I can remember my first. Underwater camera was sealife. Reef master with a whopping three mega pixels now. This housing will fit a number of iphones and android smartphones. The housing is bluetooth enabled and his rate it to one hundred and thirty feet. The sea life sport diver smartphone. Housing comes with a vacuum seal and duly alarms when you purchase the housing. You'll get a free app that will give you access to most of your phones. Usual camera functions also included is a red filter. And if that's not enough to housing allows you to put in those sealife life color changing moisture. Munchers he i remember those now. The housing isn't cheap. It retails for two hundred ninety nine dollars and ninety five cents. Us but if you wanna travel light and still get some great underwater shots of your adventures check out the c. Life sport diver smartphone housing at sea. Life fash cameras dot com. Well that's it for this edition of wet notes here on scuba shack radio.

"And Nebraska football just does not appear to be making any kind of progress as a program. And it's a big problem. This is year four Nebraska for their head coach, Scott frost. And unfortunately, he is now 12 and 20. As a head coach at Nebraska, which is just a pitiful, awful record for this is your fourth year in college football, coaching that team. And remember, this is the same Scott frost who went 13 to O coaching at Central Florida in 2017. He and I loved him back in the day because he went undefeated with 13 O. He his team played in the peach bowl. They were massive underdogs, and they beat auburn in their bowl game. And not only did they beat auburn, Scott frost stayed with the team, usually because he got hired by Nebraska before the year was over. Before the bowl game happened, and usually when that happens, the coach will leave and say, hey, I'm sorry, I'm not coaching the bowl game. I'm already. I got a new job. I got to go attend to my new job. And instead of doing that, Scott frost stayed with Central Florida for their bowl game, beat auburn, then went to Nebraska and I always thought that was very classy, like don't bail on your players, especially your 12 and O going to be going on 13 and O, you have unfinished business. You can't leave before that happens. And so I always love that about Scott frost. And then he went to Nebraska. And since 2017, Scott frost has not had a winning season. He's had all kinds of bad news about him with transfers and Christian McCaffrey's little brother left the program, and there was a lot of bad blood there. And it's sad. And what's crazy even more is that when Scott frost took the job at Nebraska and went to Nebraska. It was like going home for him because he was a starting quarterback in 1997. When he led Nebraska to a national title. So he was beloved. He's like the beloved son coming home. And it didn't work out..
