Can You Have Your Carbs and Eat Them Too?
"Truth is cops crucial to optimum health and today I want to delve right in and explain exactly why this is in the hope that you'll never affair a slice of bread or bowl of pasta again said joining me to explain the truth about cops is registered Dietitian Hala El Shafie who specializes in eating disorders amp bariatric surgery. Hello Hala Hello Raymond how are you I'm very well I think the topic guide to discuss today is so so typical of the questions that you and I as registered help fresheners you as a registered Dietitian registered nutritionist. Get every single day by the two star if we thought we've cobs were as they are said to be in the media so-called of weight gain then surely we should see everybody on a cop diets lose more weight than those on higher moderate carb diets but that's not the case as it it's not the case I mean there's so many misconceptions about nutrition as a whole and uh hydrates are of no exception in fact actually it's it's it's really of the scale actually and there are so many misconceptions and it's actually very concerned because it's now got to the point where it's actually dangerous and we are seeing issues and I'm sure you'll sing issues in your clinic with people who have literally taken a whole foods great without understanding the importance of you know ensuring that you have the right types of foods and also nutrients within within the Diet so I think we start with what is a cop so we're gonNA start with the bike basically in simple terms right now it's actually a compound that's made up of carbohydrates oxygen and hydrogen but to put it in sort of Clayton's we I mean carbohydrates are actually basically split into simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates a lot of people will have head about but maybe they don't actually understand what that means in really simple terms it's really how the body actually digest them actually how we we use them um yeah no very well expanding most people would think of simple as a piece of white bread or complex is a piece of Brown bread and cops a such an important component wouldn't of the Diet so let's talk through some of the reasons why today we are saying perhaps you actually need these carbohydrates when you really do need carbohydrates and we are getting so many makes messages in the media about what we don't need carbohydrates and on a technicality you could survive without carbon interest however this is the preferred source of energy in the body and also the the brain actually needs glucose okay which is what arteries broken down into twenty five percent of our brains energy like that's few but glucose exactly right and also it it does affect our moods you know there are lots of different aspects hair and my biggest concern is what we breakdown foods into nutrients we don't go into the super walk by nutrient we don't order nutrients in a restaurant good analogy about it yeah so when you actually break it down like that it stops to become a nonsense because it actually is a nonsense but that nonsense is causing serious issues for many many people because of the lack of understanding so hopefully today will be able to dispel most if not all of those myths now I think not so so true and we will let me be discussing those really important factors because we know and we both know that Serotonin is a happy hormone and actually serotonin plays a role with the doc melatonin which regulates Circadian Rhythms and I'll sleep slang cool and also a lot of it comes from the gut which links back to things like how healthy is you got the hydrates contribute to that but will impact Hala could cutting carbs have on someone what are the kind of signs that people tend to see I think the most obvious sign is poor energy levels so irritability you hear the term angry I mean seriously you ask anybody I was Kinda asked today I mean literally don't speak to me Miss Lunch I'm late for lunch because honestly you beyond realizing traffic I think Buckingham Palace was closed and we decided to go Toria for lunch and about an hour later in traffic I was an hour behind my lunch and we had to go home and give up road rage yes exactly no and it does it does affect your mood because it's Dr Rightly affecting your blood sugars I want your blood sugars are not no longer stable that has a direct effect now A lot of people assume on I don't have the willpower and so on and so forth but it's actually not about that it's about the physiological effect that it has on the body thank you for clarifying that so I think a lot of people think about willpower and they think that then good an awful they can't say no so you said it is eve Lucien basically absolutely I mean everything that we eat has a direct effect on our gut digestion and our blood sugars then has an effect on how we actually function yeah and as a human and it's so much more than wait I'm so upset that nutrition has now been just devalue to just weight loss weight gain yeah I mean with all due respect I didn't train for as long as I can you didn't train for as long as you did needed any of our colleagues in the failed just to do weight loss thank you I feel like if I give a talk somewhere it's always well how you going to help me lose weight razz like he just said look at your energy levels your concentration your mood every day your sleep patterns all of these factors backed absolutely everything including your ability manage wait your stress levels because there's a hormonal and balanced which is absolutely crucial now you start messing around with nutrition and what you're eating you will start to also have a negative knock-on effect to your physiology over so much I want to delve into starring with things I'd calories uh I think she let's start with them why I mean I see people in my clinic that a skydive white cops do you WanNa just explain we shouldn't beginning what is difference between white I'm Brian ah okay so basically what we talking is simple carbohydrates okay now if we actually breakdown going back to the biochemistry of what carbohydrates now they're actually broken down into Monica royds which is the simplest form and actually about how the gut actually absorbs the carbohydrates you eat the next category is soccer is which is to the matter together one time and then we go to only a few yeah I'm paulie which is yes exactly so yeah there we go that's about taking UNITA remain both so the factor here is that anything that we eat in the die all the police have to be broken down into monasteries now policy cycle rides which is five of which were talk about later cannot be broken down okay so that then means that there is a direct effect on your blood sugar or not the case may be okay so it does affect our blood sugars and that's why it's important going back to white bread it is a simple sugar it's broken down into you should get it does have a direct effect on your energy levels and stabilizing those act simply doesn't mean of course there's a good or bad food because they have the I don't use that terminology and I focus on reeducating clients on patients on that because that has such a negative tation with regards to your relationship with food there is no such thing as a good or bad food this is not a wrong alright situation it's about the silence of our diet and also to to be quite perfectly honest it's okay to have those feeds occasion of course would be without them we don't just eat for nutritional states exactly I completely agree and you've mentioned blood sugar with Tom I think people would have had a lot of is Gi all the glycemic index I'm not sure everyone knows exactly what that means so should people be focusing on the GI of food only if you'll working with a register a nutritionist or registered Dietitian explained the reason why on its own you will get yourself into trouble lacey wise just to throw out for example watermelon has a higher gi the chocolate cake oh my God rights so there you go so you could get yourself into a lot of hot water and into a bit of a mess if you're just doing that so it's really in context and it's really about the balance of your whole not just in one day because we can't get everything that we need in in just one day low gi is good for them but let you decide chocolate cake lower than watermelon yeah yeah one hundred it's very very important that in mind so of course the exception to focusing on things like Gi diets again if you diabetic and I think let's separate them out type one diabetes aside just for second can you explain a bit more about type two diabetes and why this may be affecting them with blood sugar levels so basically type two diabetes you have an insufficiency of Insulin production from the pancreas but also your body has just become less able to actually utilize that incident in very basic terms however the nutrition is absolutely crucial and somebody was type two diabetes it is as is activities well now if you do have type two diabetes you absolutely need to be under registered Dietitian diabetic team as well because they're all serious implications of not being able to manage your blood sugars over a period of time now the has been some really interesting research with against me carbohydrates diet yeah diets because I hear it all the time I hear give up carbs if you've got type two diabetes well it's not that simple now Lecomba hydrate diets can be safe and effective in the short term but remember said can be effective in the short time so that is what that's also why we need to ensure that you are under registered Dietitian and diabetic team to be able to manage your blood sugar levels as well also feel blood sugars become very hello and you'll you become hypoglycemic which is also the risk of having a low carbohydrate diet then you could potentially be in trouble so that is also a factor which people who don't consider oh no I think they always seem take the sugars out hate the shook out and actually sometimes they really need the sugars absolutely so it can what both ways and again it's reiterated the importance of not just taking something out of your diet without fully understanding what it does I mean the UK government guidelines recommend approximately fifty Centerville total energy intake should be from cops in itself and this is helpful rule of thumb to follow but obviously were unique aren't we so we are absolutely unique think just to clarify that for a what we need to be looking at it's not just the type of carbohydrate but the quality and the quantity and that is where people go wrong so to speak so and that's why working with the healthcare professional who is qualified and actually knows what they're doing because you know all of us that is a research based and evidence based in shows that we keep you safe because that's what it's about at the end of the day and so many people I ended up getting into so many problems as a result of doing something on their own you specialize in eating disorders Holler as well bariatric surgery and you must see this kind of thing over time with people just suddenly being very scared of a food group this phenomena I mean they're all research statistics on this but anecdotally I am seeing a serious increase in food version food and their foods and specifically carbohydrates and it saw misplace but the fear is very very real and trying to pick that's because somebody has read an article all started am a diet without understanding really what the implications the you know has very very serious

always welcome to use our conference rooms here so if need be we can always continue to meet some folks at the Lincoln location but our primary office is or has moved to two five zero building half Centerville road and walk right on route one seventeen really easy to get to it is right off the highway plenty of parking beside the building and just across the the entry way plenty of parking there as well so so it's good we're excited we're adding a lot of space we're and here's the cool part from my perspective we will have a client education center inside the suite so we're right now there will be about twenty to thirty seats available there and we hope to have a what we call luncheon learns you know meetings where we have different topics that will just short short meetings like thirty minutes and it's not going to be financial stuff is gonna be fun stuff as well and things that you just need to know about might be on identity theft it might be on cooking it go beyond plant thing you know we're going to survey our clients because we want to provide what they want to hear about in a cool idea that the NY said was you know they're Boy Scouts and girl scouts of earn badges for different things why don't we have some of these boys and girl scouts. them to earn a badge to show our clients how to use their technology. he would clients what about me you know because I'm not all that great with technology you know so and I thought that was a great idea but that's what we want to do we want to just do more things to be there for our clients and have an easy mechanism for them to invite their friends them as a you know just going to talk about tax so once you come on in and you can meet Jeff and his staff and everything what we we we really just want to do it to keep our clients engaged with those so that we're providing access and information to them on the topics that they're looking for so we're really excited about a new place again that addresses two five zero Centerville road it's building F. as in foxtrot and we'll have the entire first floor in that building we've got about two thousand square feet here but we're going up to about five thousand square feet at the new place and part of that square footage as you said for the education facility I'm so excited about that job because I I think I see it being used in a variety of ways it will be so valuable really impact people's lives here in our community yeah you don't I was sharing that with the couple that was in a recently and they're both faced with of moms the book both sets of past but both of their mothers are now needing more and more help in there at the stage where they may have to choose an assisted living facility so she said well do you think you can have somebody come in and and just talk about of assisted living facilities what they are you know the kind of services to look for and how to go about selecting an assisted living facility as a no that's a great topic you know we just have to get that part finish building supports the limb build out right now it hasn't been completed we hope to get that done in the next four to six weeks so towards the end of the year will have that space up and running and be able to have these types of meetings with our clients and their friends it's fabulous congradulations Jeff to see you as. and the team love to hear that you're growing I know you have a heart for helping people become empowered understanding more about their finances and one of the areas where it's so important to be up to speed and to really understand all your options when it comes to social security and I want to talk about that how you're helping people understand when the claim their benefits and how they can actually maximize those benefits can you speak to that you know it's interesting that we meet with so many folks that are unaware of certain little rules that social security has that can really benefit them in in in a number of cases in just the last couple of months when I've talked about spousal benefits people look at me like I have two heads of something what what do you talking as well as the benefits and I'll explain wills where your spouse can get half of your earnings you know if that's higher than theirs and then they'd look at me and they say well how much do I have to give up of my check in order for them to get half. in the two shows that people are not aware of what the rules are so the cool part was files of benefits if it's appropriate if you hit certain ages a certain times etcetera there's a spousal benefits that you can take advantage of now most commonly as well as a benefit works best when a spouse may have stayed at home and raise the kids and really did not have much of a benefit because they didn't work a whole lot outside the house so often times when that's the scenario let's just use the simple example let's say the husband has a two thousand dollar benefit well his wife can get a thousand dollars off his record without him losing one penny of his two thousand dollars and it doesn't matter it could be her record is two thousand you know I know of a case where she was the breadwinner he injured his back pretty severely early on in their marriage and he ended up being Mr mom so you love to cook so that worked out well believe in essence took over the role of raising the kids so his earnings record was very low so we had him draw his record out at sixty two because it was a small amount and then when he got to full retirement age we had him switch over to a spousal benefits which gave him an increase in his check because then he was able to draw half of her record in her record was was about twenty five hundred dollar benefit back them so that was you know at the top end of the the benefit amount so he ended up with half of that so many people are not aware that you can do that and then there are rules relative to when you can do certain types of filings now they are getting more and more limited in twenty fifteen the social security change some rules so they kind of phased out some things that some strategies that we used to use since the early two thousands of and and as of January of two. twenty that it's called the restricted filing that feature that ability that strategy is going away so if you are not sixty two. to January first of twenty sixteen you don't qualify to do that restricted filing so what does that mean that means you qualify for benefits under your own earnings record but to go to social security or at your full retirement age your spouse is that at least that their full retirement age or above and you say look I want to restrict the finally I don't want to take my record I want to take half of theirs and I want mine to get that eight percent roll up every year until I turned seventy and then at that point in time. you you would go back to social security and refile at age seventy two drawer your now much higher earnings record because you get a thirty two percent increase from a full retirement age of sixty six rolling updates seven so it's pretty cool but they are limiting the strategies that we have a social security so a lot of people are have talked about it a lot but many of the strategies will go away effective January of twenty twenty so I know I threw out a lot of different things there Megan and it might be a little confusing to our listeners as they're driving around doing their shopping or whatever they're doing so of course we've we've done a nice report that we would love to send out to our listeners on social security all you need to do is text the word security two four oh one two hundred seven two hundred and we can get that report out to you again simply text the word security to four oh one two hundred seven two hundred and we'll get the report out today it's a decision guide if you will that kind of steps you through how do you go about looking at that social security decision what you know when is the sweet spot that's what we look for when we're when we're sitting down the listeners what's the sweet spot for them is everybody situation is a little bit different as to when they should be drawing in whose record they should be drawing from or whose record should they be deferring for the future so again simply text the word security to four oh one two hundred seven two hundred and we'll get that decision guide right out to you yeah where does social security fed into someone's overall process when you're helping them build out that income plan for retirement. well it's it's a key part in that many people are relying on that social security as their only form of quote unquote pension you know it's a benefit that they will get that will be there for the rest of their lives assuming social security system doesn't collapse of course and let's hope that doesn't happen in its inflation adjusted as well not to what it really should be in my opinion that's a whole separate conversation there are in most years at least a slight increase in social security however the downside of that is most of those inflation adjustments are eaten up by the increase in the part B. Medicare benefits for your health coverage so often times when we look at building an income plan we don't allow any increase in the social security for the future we're just assuming that all the increases in the future a going to be taken up by the increase in the Medicare part B. premiums and that way we're making sure that we're not looking through rose colored lenses so to speak and thinking to positively about what will happen with social security in the future so we're keeping that that net number flat of for the rest of somebody's life so it it's just one of the little ways that we look at things that may be a little different from other advisers not sure about that but we know we we look at it in that context so that we don't over inflate future income time flies every segment here it is four oh one two hundred seven two hundred give us a call if you'd like to come on in for a visit we'd love to have you here see if we might be able to help you and your family with your retirement planning just give us a call Denise will call call you back and set up an appointment which is totally complementary four oh one two hundred seven two hundred we look forward to hearing from. "On six thirty five Brett Gilly. Yup. It's eastbound at Ferguson Centerville authorities are doing an accident investigation. So only the right lane is getting through. And it looks like they're actually intermittently shutting down the whole freeway, but then again reopening the right lane to let folks through again. So traffic's still stop from seventy five if you don't have to use eastbound six thirty five right now, just please don't lots of good alternatives forest lane say plano road Jupiter west Miller road there are some crowded spots. But by far better than being on eastbound LBJ now looking eastbound thirty at MacArthur Cockrell hill, excuse me. They got an accident cleared up ever traffic still trying to relax from a little after MacArthur boulevard. Speeds are almost back to the limit. Northbound sixty seven looks really good. Now. The next minute redbird is completely gone. And and traffic is almost back to the limit from camp wisdom, then hearing from tex- dot now that this problem on six thirty five might be gone. So the only thing we can say is you still want to avoid six thirty five. It's not going to come apart anytime soon because this delay has been hanging around since two o'clock hour now on the Sam Rayburn tollway. If you're heading north around Preston that accident has cleared but not without some backup there still slow traffic for our about the Dallas north tollway. Forty five south accident at the exit ramp to one seventy five that's still partially blocking. And the domino effect backup. Stretched onto seventy five central through Highland Park. Let's out. Let's check back in with Brett for the official word. I have great news. All right. Eastbound six thirty five at Centerville. Ferguson may have reopened the freeway. All lanes are reopen gonna take for that jam up to unwind. Is it reaches all the way back to seventy five. But thank goodness the freeways reopened. Randy fuller. We county has kind of flown under the race. Dr. But we've had a couple of things going on. Yeah. Hearst eastbound one Eighty-three at Norwood. Fender bender is blocking the right lane. Traffic is backed up to Lupe twenty and Fort Worth southbound thirty five W from heritage trace to north tyranny. Parkway expect some slow delays there and Fort Worth southbound thirty five W from twenty to ever men Parkway. It's a little sluggish. Now, we've got westbound six thirty five web chapel watch for a minor snag. There could be a stall. But things are bit slow as you head over for midway road..

"At Centerville Ferguson. They're doing an accident investigation and all lanes to include the express lane except for the far right lane closed only the far right lane is getting by and traffic is well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news. It's jamming up now back to Hillcrest road. So our forty five minute delay. Maybe two hours on that. We don't know yet when they're going to get the other lanes reopened. So just don't please use eastbound six thirty five right now, take any other exit. You can get off skillman plano road. You've got Miller Royal anything's better to be an on eastbound six thirty five now eastbound thirty just after copper blocking the two left lanes that has traffic loaded up from a little before loop twelve then we've got problem in the way of a stall on the tollway. That's the Dallas north tollway. Southbound around four to this one's in the left lane. We've got a backup in Addison that starts roughly around beltline road or something else on that six thirty five. Yeah. Just coming in now. To add to it. All again, I call on the traffic tip line saying that there is no stall out in the right lane at Jupiter, and we heard there was a couple of problems along the way. So, you know, you've got such a long backup people may run out of gas and things things compound the problem there. And so yeah, that's going to be a horrible backup right now. Randy fuller. We've got a new problem in south Fort Worth. Yes. Indeed. Eastbound twenty Crowley, James. The exit is blocked with an accident. Traffic is backed up from grand berry road. Thanks to Thelma for giving us the initial information on the Carol de traffic tip line and Fort Worth eastbound thirty east chase to Cooper Eaton expect some slow moving traffic along that stretch and even past that point heavy traffic from ballpark way to three sixty in Arlington and southbound three sixty in Arlington. It's a carrier Parkway to Abram. Most of the traffic is easing on that stretch quite a bit seventy five north three. We've been talking about the slow traffic out of downtown. It looks like a pretty typical rush hour right now, he's thirty minutes maybe closer to forty from downtown all the way up to fifth fifteenth street in plano. So most of the way you're going to see slow traffic. If you're coming, south Richardson is pretty good. But you do hit the laze around the high five, which take you all the way down to what all Rogers. I'm Juliet orders next report at five forty eight. And breaking traffic alerts.

"At six thirty five Centerville, Ferguson. This is a box truck accident. Two left lanes are blocked off and this. This cleanup process is probably going to be pretty lengthy. We're going to be jammed up from about Jupiter Kingsley. Already taking a good ten minutes to get through that will no doubt stretch closer to the lake highlands area on the lane not too far away. Eastbound thirty construction at Galloway is in the right lane. And that's why you've got some additional delays coming north on six thirty five from skeet starting way back around military insane. And it looks like we've got a little bit of relief in Tarrant county on three sixty. Let's go to break Gilly. Yes. It hardware. There was an accident blocking the left lane. But they got that cleared up and speeds are pretty much back to the limit. As you're coming up on the scene, something to just keep in mind at Bedford Brown trail, still reported close at hardwood and about a block north because of some down power lines from the storm, Roanoke. Westbound one seventy eight Alta vista only the right? Right lane still reported getting by due to a wreck traffic is jammed up from just before Alta vista. Now, we've got twenty west at sixty seven an accident in the left lane. This is going to be in south Dallas. It is backing things beyond thirty five. So there is a good ten minutes worth of backup here starting around Houston school road. And of course, after you get past that smooth sailing all the way over to three sixty not just yet from GRANDE prairie between the Bush turnpike. In three sixty eastbound six thirty five back up to north Dallas. That's a wreck in the web chapel area. And we had some folks calling us on the traffic tip by saying this is blocking the exit can't really see that. But I can definitely tell you that there is some jammed up traffic as you come upon thirty five e Julian Rogers next report at three eighteen and breaking traffic alerts.

"Conduct david in centerville your next up on wmal we are oh mary yeah europe david oh that was quick hey uh what are we sharing is i don't know what's more maury responsible is a physician who diagnosis location they'd never actually examine yeah or a journalist you reports on that that being set nothing you played raskin's makes him sound crazy to me i perfectly understand the bird three analogy um i think you know i think him getting up and say hey you know this this psychiatrists who i admittedly dell's no uh or no didn't examined the the president there's making those diagnosis that he's not allowed to be around sharp objects um is is in itself irrresponsible and stupid but i don't think you're proving that can you rask is at at all a crazy go i'm not trying to prove he's crazy i've decided i'm i'm i'm merely prevent presenting the evidence and letting people reached their conclusions but if you look at withing i if you look at his policies and look at how he wants to harness the american economy for healthcare and for environmental purposes and climate change and taxation and the redistribution of wealth i the given that it's never worked in always resulted in death chaos and violence anywhere else in the world in our history i think that's pretty crazy well i don't disagree with you okay i don't disagree with you that socialism and the the the leftist version of the democratic party is is in an insanity and it's so i'm just saying that you know you'd better come up with better clips spend much of employers or they're just not bolstering your argument r y again and maybe maybe you're taking my premise a little too literally or seriously but it really it's it's it's really more about the fact that jamie raskin a man who is to the left of bernie sanders and rosie o'donnell has the temerity to step up and say that trump is.
