We'll tra i say that and pj tucker's old he is and he continually throws up. No points a thirty six. It's okay they didn't need that did not need pedia tucker to score. They did not bring him there. To score the broaden their for energy they brought on there for his defense of leadership. Every time i saw. Pg tucker throw up at three in the finals. Gods a mess i mean i think he averaged one point per game in the playoff. Let's go to points per game. That's the funniest part to me is like he did. And he wouldn't play in a ton in the regular season for them. That was probably. They probably thought that out eases workload because the rockets he averaged two point six points per game for the bucks in twenty regular season games than the playoffs for milwaukee on their title run. He averaged a total well. I don't have the every series but in in the finals. Here you go. Here's his series in the in the in the nba playoffs this year. Points per game. Point eight point seven one point seven one point two. So you're telling me is. Pj tucker is to the milwaukee. Assist the shorted him. Sorry i'm sorry. That was my bad over the wrong one. "Whether it's over bone or not is your own opinion. I mean, he's not wrong about trying to get edges. And gain edges and learning a team signals and learning teams, audibles or whatever the case may be. That's fine. The problem people have a spy gate is that it did something beyond that. It wasn't like you were just watching them on the sideline. They were filming. They were. They were getting it in a way that most would consider, I guess underhanded. If you will. I have no idea how much that led to the Patriots initial success. Obviously, Tom Brady has proven himself. Since obviously the Patriots proved themselves over and over again. Uh, you know, the deflate gate thing was always a silly thing. In the sense of how much of an advantage did it really give them? But I always would counter and say, you know, if they didn't think it gave him some advantage, they wouldn't do it right. The same thing goes for for spy gate. So is it overblown? Perhaps. Perhaps it's overbooked, but, um The idea that It's not a big deal because cheating is only cheating. If you get caught. It's just stupid. That makes no sense. What's that? Another one sticking there in the state of Massachusetts. Um the Boston Celtics announced Wednesday. Denny aim stepping down Brad Stevens being promoted to prison in the basketball operation. The Celtics will Now search for a new head coach is the Celtics Championship window open. Uh, no, not until they get more good players. But yes, in the sense that they have Jayson Tatum, right and Jalen Brown to a degree, you know, like potato. I was really impressed by Jayson Tatum in that series against the Nets. Most impressed. I've been By him and his career. I thought that the Celtics actually represented themselves well in that series. They're just at a talent deficit. They were never going to be able to make up. But Tatum was good enough where he belonged on the floor as peers as a peer.

"All right. So chris from your conversation with him and from watching him as a broadcaster over the years. How would you say bill. Walton has evolved from my selfish perspective. He's evolved to be more interesting. I remember watching those. Mba on nbc games with bill walton and marv albert as a kid. Bill was nothing compared to what he is now. Penetration jumpers in transition whereas the defensive resistant for minnesota walton. Was the guy in a suit and tie on nbc for several years. Kevin garnett is thirty six in the nba. Free throw attempts. That's not good enough now. He's the when there isn't a pandemic going on. He's showing up at basketball games in grateful dead shirts and he's embraced everything that he probably had to bury for a very long time. Walton doesn't offer much of that bill walton wants to find a correlation between a slam. Dunk and the majesty of the grand canyon. He wants to see a perfect rotation for an open corner. "Spent five days norlander, I want to get to both men obviously, but let's start with the most recent news the breaking news if you will John Thompson junior the first black coach to. Guide a Division One team to the incidentally tournament title when he led Georgetown to the National Championship in Nineteen eighty-four has died at the age of seventy eight you wrote the Oh bit for CBS sports. So if you can explain to the listeners, some of whom are perhaps too young to properly understand impact big John made. Explain why John Thomson the Georgetown Legend is one of the most important figures in the history of American sports. Yeah. No doubt about it and I know we have young and older listeners alike but. Surely, a certain percentage of our listening audience was not alive when John Thompson left the coaching profession in nineteen ninety nine. In my opinion parish. John Thompson is a person that you can only not only you have to tell his story if you're going to tell the story of College Basketball Okay I'm so the story of college basketball can't be written without John Thompson and and I believe the story of social justice for black people in our country can't be told without John Thompson because his prominence from the seventies. Big Time in the eighty s when Georgetown was at its peak and then into the nineties and really even there after was huge, there were other prominent accomplished black coaches by his side most notably Nolan Richardson who won a national championship in Nineteen ninety-four with Arkansas and temples John Chainey who were Frequently outspoken on these issues. But John Thompson because of where he coached. Georgetown which was not which was not seen as a haven for black athletes to go and play basketball until John Thompson got there. In fact, the irony is that John Thompson was an incredible. Basketball player parade. All American wound up playing a providence played on. A fact that I think almost never gets acknowledging discusses that John Thompson was a third round NBA pick and was a member of the Boston Celtics Championship teams during the during a time when the Celtics were the absolute dynasty of the NBA, he was an amazing basketball player, but it more speaks to how big a figure he was as a coach that that part of his life is. Is Put on the total backburner there but he grew up in Washington DC and Georgetown was such a non factor. It did not even recruit him when he was a parade all American Uganda playing at Providence and listen any coach that is worth his or her salt will live on through the memories in appraisals and and high praise of their players but to. Me and Alan Iverson has become the player who has embodied us more than any other I? Think former John, Thompson player When he said he saved his life, he had that memorable tear-filled hall of fame speech in two. Thousand Sixteen Day I Thompson, himself was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Hall of fame in Nineteen Ninety nine the or that he left coaching. But for everything he stood for was vocal with us and make no mistake about it while as we talk on this podcast and you'll read plenty see plenty here plenty of John Thompson. He fought for what he believed, but he was also among the most difficult coaches to deal with, and that is to his credit all these years later but he he was very aware of that. He was He was beloved He could I can't get the image out of my mind of him, revealing him wearing the the Louis Carnesecca sweater when he played in Saint John's he had that that saw side to him but absolutely, he could be. Rough and gruff wasn't always kind to the media and I think at the time when he was doing a lot of these things, parents and speaking up for. Racial injustices and Fighting back against. I WANNA give you the floor here too. But like there is a particular thing that stands out to me amongst all the other things it's when he went to the final four, eighty two and that's win ewing was a freshman and he basically was asked about being the first black coach to make it to the final four. This is a direct quote from John Thompson in. One, thousand, nine, hundred, he said I resent the hell out of that question it implies that on the first black coach capable of making the final four that's not close to true I'm just the first one who given the opportunity to get here and I think something that's important for everyone to keep at the front of their minds as they learn more and hear more and intake this. Just. Tragic death with John Thompson is that he was speaking truce to a lot of things in the seventies and the eighties and the nineties that I think only in the past two weeks to months to years have become more on the forefront of the discussion in mainstream American sports discourse pair show credit to him his legacy will live on. I. Got Plenty More to say but I'M GONNA throw it back to you with your thoughts on on what he meant to college. Basketball Sports in general and then obviously reference to your column. You know. John John Thompson was a a larger than life figure in sports, but you know on a personal level. For me because some of it comes down to. Time. Now, I was born in one, thousand, nine, hundred, ninety seven, and as we've talked about in various conversations before when I started to really attached to.

"Guy like Lebron. James and Anthony Davis you look you look at G. Mountain La A. With the Lakers. They're going to be able to lean on those guys, maybe even more than they would have irregular postseason. Those, guys also might be a little bit more rusty than would be irregular postseason because they haven't had enough time. You know as an older player who knows maybe Lebron takes a little bit too warm up. in there's many other players out there. That could happen to, but. That's the only difference that I see is really that teams might be able to rely on their top players more to play more minutes. because. They're not at the tail. End up a really long arduous season. I think Brad Stevens is probably going to do that I. Envision in eight-man rotation of. Of, close to twenty minutes, and then maybe a couple of other guys in some spot minutes around there, obviously not owning a play eight guys in in in a game it might happen. in a must win game seven situation, but I think that some other guys are going to trickle in there for a couple minutes each game Maybe just for some spot minutes. Someone gets in trouble and whatnot. But I really do think he's GonNa lean heavily on those top seven or eight players for really high majority of minutes, and this is you know given that we hope the Kemba? Walker can make it through those types of minutes that if he. Maybe someone else makes it in there and get some more time. That's why I wanted to go next. Brad doesn't seem to like the word worried or concerned. But how should we feel about where things stand Kemba Walker right now with an injury that even after basically four months off, and not being able to do anything but kind of work out on his own, and try and get that bothersome knee back on track this dates back to mid January, and he's still feeling the effects of it. Yes, so what I've been telling people who have asked me about this is number one..

"They're going to go up from here. According to Peter Vesey who was covered the NBA for almost fifty years who we know. Well, Doc Rivers has always wanted to coach the Lakers and Magic Johnson would give him. Mm that job will dock and magic so well, you can call them Glenn in urban doc, leaving the clippers for the Lakers. Tony the things you said quoting Peter Vesey, and you know, them to be true about always thinking. I'd love that down the line somewhere, even as he close to Celtics championship. Yes. Are the Lakers Walton is not going to be their coach are the Lakers covetous as they look down. The corridor of Irv doc of Glen rivers. Sure. But I think there's some things in the way here, and I mentioned to of one there people southern California right in that environment. Selling doc? You don't wanna do this? And one of those reasons is simply LeBron James. I mean, he's been told by people, and I know this the prompt and want to be coached. He's never coached by somebody with that kind of personality command thorny hack, you relax. Check. Isn't it that rejected it? Yes. So doc is being reminded of that. By the other reason is the clippers are not looking at the Lakers thinking, we're gonna be subservient to them. They're looking at the free agent class thinking we're going to get us. Some of that we're going to add those pieces whatever they are to a playoff team. So the clippers are not thinking of Jerry West is involved with the clippers now that I'm thinking of themselves as the little brother anymore will they've. Always been even though they they actually stay. The Lakers are the most important sports franchise in Los Angeles. Even the dodgers. They are the most important if your Doc Rivers you live in Los Angeles, nothing really changes in your life. Your commute is the same the buildings..

"Would you like for Christmas? I would like the Christmas as far as the Celtics championship. I think got anything. Welcome back to the job. That was lovely. I'm Rachel Nichols back with a hall of Famer Scottie Pippen. Now, our senior NBA writer from the undefeated, Marc spears, I really like that little little spot with Jason Tatum saying he wants to Celtics to win for Christmas. However, he has also said recently, he does think that the attention. The Celtics received has gotten to the heads this little bit. He says they're consistent and on Friday, man, they were blown out by the bucks. They then held a team meeting after the game to clear the air said the Celtics have the chance of a lifetime. But quote, obviously are playing selfish. Apparently those words run with his younger teammates because they bounced back yesterday beating the Hornets by sixteen points. But Scotty, do you think that they can right this ship and move past what recalled quote ego Centric things? This is the time of the season where you kinda check your teammates. And you put them back in check because everybody's thinking about Christmas. Everybody's trying to make the all star team. So it's time to look in the mirror and really say to yourself. I'm doing the best thing for our team right now. Or is it about me? And you know, I'm glad to see cow resale because I've been one whose verbal leader. You know, we sell cow REBA Cleveland. We've really never saw his leadership. We didn't we always heard from LeBron. Well, now, we know who the guy with the Celtics in is is good to see him speak out and get teammates on track. And I think it helped based on the results from last night's game. Wow. Horford came back. So maybe that helps right the ship a little bit. I got I feel Jason Tatum was like ten years old witting interviewed Larry Hughes, and he was practicing for them. And now he's a dad, but maybe they need to go to Celtics past and get Kevin Garnett to come in there. And talk to them about sacrifice about putting your ego aside what they did in two thousand eight when they won you had three all stars. You had a budding young star, and Rondo and they figured out a way to do it. And they probably could use his passion and to hear his story and get their get their selves, right and stop worrying about their own personal staff. Everyone could use Kevin Garnett passion. That's that's certainly true. And look this is a little different from the warriors for timeout. Earlier segment that even when they had their D dream on drama. They have so much to sort of fall back on because they want wanted championship together. All those guys. These guys are trying to have pieces fit together who have not wanna championship together and bunch of them didn't quite play together in this playoff games that really mattered because of absences of coordinator kyri injuries. So they are figuring out. I do tend to think they've got a long runway. This is a team that could go into mayor June. So that gives them time to work this out. That's another six months from now, we'll see team meetings going on around the League Saturday afternoon, though, the clippers blew out the nuggets and after the game marching gore type did not hold back on how he felt about nuggets. Big man, Nikola Yokich. Coretec, quote, he's the biggest flapper in the history in that history. Scott. Been around for a long time. Three hundred pound dude and flopping all the time. You know, maybe he meant biggest in size as opposed to most flopping est. Do do you think that this is good deep fence flopping may be big as inside inside inside? But it's it's been some big flop in game. And it makes it very difficult for the facials to call the game. And you guys these big guys out there this, you know, they take him blows. Like they got hit by train. This is tough on Brad that that the league of finding these..

"Putting on a shooting display during the live look in if you were watching as a rail and is still with us two time NBA champ ten time, all star. Now hall of Famer you wanna title with the Celtics and the heat, which title meant more to you. Probably the the Celtics championship because I hadn't won anything up to that point. And when you come from, you know, Seattle where we had struggled. We had one playoff berth and to go from, you know, the Celtics where worst to first, you know it was almost like unimaginable so that probably the, you know, when is the first time when you get there, it's like an an amazing feeling you during your speech gave a shout out to the the Celtics players winning a championship. They're still we've talked about this. It's just such a weird relationship or lack thereof that continues, why? Why is it? There's it feels like there's something that's always going to be there unless it's the media that that keeps it there because it feels like you've tried to move on with it or try to mend fences here. Yeah, I've I've, you know, even when I left it was you just. No, that this is what you have to do for your career, and there's no like harm, you know, you're not create any ill will as I leave, it's just all about trying to figure out how to improve your career. I focus more on what we did in the five years we we spend together, could you have left differently left the Celtics differently? And therefore we wouldn't have all that. That to me is, is really on the the beholder. I think the people who are are, who feel some kind of way about me having left. Obviously, I was very loved in the city, and you know, I still feel the same way about the city because of what we've done, what we did. So I've heard from people that said, I'll we just hate. Did you went to Miami? You know, the fact that you, we hate LeBron you went to LeBron you could win the Phoenix and it would have been all good. So it's, yeah, it's a bunch of ideas where. Where they, they were upset because aware ultimately ended up going into the fact that I one was even more of a wedge drove and people's minds..

"Is Cuba's here came on the podcast last summer. I thought we were one of them, but then the Lakers LeBron now all of a sudden he wanted to come back. Yeah, man, you're not gonna come back. You guys are back. We back, you know, was cool. It might be like a Lakers Celtics championship on the Harare banking on it, isn't that just the best when it comes around, it's the best. It's a circle life Co. basketball life. I remember trying to teach my son like, you know what? It means the rivalry because he was born in two thousand. He doesn't know anything, but Shaq and Kobe. Oh yeah. So I was telling him what it meant until he came around and then he had a chance to fill it and the Celtics beat the Lakers. Oh, eight. Yeah. So. So and then the Lakers Celtics? Yeah, he now he understands what it means. So it was special for the comeback around where he could fill it. You know, he felt that loss and and so is cool if it comes back around again. Yeah, it's basically had four incarnations. 'cause yet Russell versus west Miller, which I missed. That's all the sixties I missed that is worse that then it circles back with magic versus bird in the eighties. Got that one dose of that. Then when shacking Kobe, good, the Celtics weren't. They just they never been the finals. They just don't have the right teams, but then it circle back again with k. g. Kobe pairs. So this seems like it's going to be the fourth. It's like if it's like a movie sequel, this is like the fourth Sikh to four one and it's always good in its own way. Yeah, there's really animosity. There's there's very few ravaris where like Yankees, Red Sox, they play every year. Yeah, you know. And you have these different like football ones. The teams in the same division, the bears the Vikings eight each other. So this Lakers aren't even in the same conference? No, they're still it's still feels like a real reverie and yet they've only been, I don't know, twelve thirteen, fourteen finals. That's it. Only cross paths, maybe fourteen times. Yeah, but it seems epi is is like the best of sports. You know, it's, it's Ali Frazier, something like that. Yeah, it's just is good as against and you realize that you realize that your I'm living through a moment right here. Yeah. Well, the LeBron was the big guy for the Celtics to try to get through the last ten years. It's it's just kind of funny that is in the Lakers though it's like two rivals of the last thirty years Celtics have a great team. Do you know LeBron have you interacted with them? What are your LeBron experiences? I don't know LeBron I seen him when he was a rookie at all. All star game. He was kinda standing off to a self like, you know, and I remember my kids like he owed us LeBron. Oh, that's LeBron. Yeah, you know. And I looked over here but, but and you know, said was up. But the next time I really interacted winning was we did like this, this karaoke thing for James corden yet. And that was real quick and is been not the sense, but I like it like that a like like a distance? Yeah. I like to be a fan, you know, 'specially being sold entrenched in sports now. I really appreciate being a fan and not knowing the guys or not interacting as much as I used to, and I was younger, will this whole new? Does new generation of players with the musicians and the rappers and hip hop artists. They're all kind of intertwined and the guys are dropping the players names in the songs they hang out off the court. Yeah. Is that that wasn't happening in the nineties as much or maybe really at all you know it? I think it started to happen more later in the nineties, but earlier it was, you know, I'm pretty sure to raiders could care less who we were rare at the time. And so the interaction now seems like inevitable like it it, it has to be 'cause you know, these guys see each other at the clubs, and you know these guys. Cross paths rat at all these events, and you know, athletes love in Tyner entertainers, love athletes and his just, you know, a marriage peanut butter and jelly will musicians secretly wanna be NBA players as wannabe musicians now used to wanna play football. You not play football high school? Yeah. And I was like, yo..

"And he'll text rod and sam coming to la in the bottle joining i just think i still think at the end of the date they're going to get both of them i just that's my cut but i don't know i don't know and it could could change tomorrow and the lakers don't know they don't i don't think they know but i do think you're right about this i do think lebron pg probably already know don't you i mean don't you think the area know what's going on i think everybody i think the ross everybody going through the motions that was the whole thing so that that was the thing magic yesterday could have been doing i wrote this it could be a victory speech or concession speech out of what he was doing but yeah i think he's probably you probably you probably already know you're probably right i i listen i have friends in the lakers and they don't know they honestly legitimately don't know but i do think that lebron knows it's just a question of making sure all everything everyone who says they gonna do something does what they say so i i think up here that's why i'm reluctant to go after magic for often next summer because i think it's going to happen i think he'll be a press conference in but couple of weeks it'd be crazy but if it doesn't i maybe yeah it'll be tough it'll be it'll be tough sledding form you know with if they get shut out somehow we'll be good thanks join us seaman bill the la times i'm doug gottlieb for colin here on the heard let's get to outstanding hard working and debonair newsmen john goulet on the news this is the heard line news garrity by two by tomorrow they'll be like nine compliments nt twenty updates the amazing i appreciate it so kyrie irving said he's happy that james harden i'll happy for james harden he won the mvp but he mentioned on hot ninety seven in new york leave it was the morning that the really should be to be in the league take listen away said mvp is hard to gauge nowadays like because now you have the people's mvp and you have like the nba's mvp you know like mvp in your mind the people's mvp was was definitely james okay the nba mvp was definitely braun do you agree with cairo irving that really it's kind talk to others this week that it's yeah the fans and well that's your the fans it's like we never do the most valuable we don't bring the value that that's the hard definition to really get clarity on it's who had the best season and i gotta tell you that i came hard and had a better season you can't tell the story of the cavalier season without talking about how dysfunctional it was for good portion of time and yeah they got together late but they still end up with fourth best record in the eastern conference when half the teams are dumping games games a better player had a better season and i think kyrie irving in many smart people are struggling like most valuable why aren't we actually doing the valuable like a lot of things that does the meaning doesn't actually equate to what it is we park on a driveway and drive on a parkway doesn't make sense right smartest thing i've ever said so according to an article from espn there is pressure building on the lakers to trade for kawhi leonard apparently this is due to the fact that paul george coming to the lakers is not a lock and they feel like they have to entice lebron do you really now this was from whoa jr and windhorst and trust the people that spin do you really feel that there is pressure now for them to get that trade done soon look i i do think that there's the fear is the fear is paul george situation only even better right if you're is really boston comes in and like look good boston celtics championships and he'd be part of a team that's going to be good for a long long time so i think the philadelphia boston is team so there's the thought that the paul george you go to a place you say i'm only staying for year but you end up wanting to stay from oriented liking it oklahoma is that way i actually get paul george you go there like.

"Now my wife wants me to clean out this stuff and i said all right i'll go up there i went up there kicking and screaming then all of a sudden i start going through all these boxes that i just found a letter that george steinbrenner sent to me this is when i was working for cnn and new york and i'd done an interview with him and i sent him a note to say thank you for making time i appreciate that and then he sent a note back saying hey i love ted turner anything i can do for ted turner who owns cnn and then i started looking through all this other stuff i have pins from the drafts that i cover nfl draft nineteen eightyfour nineteen eightyfive nba draft lotteries i have that i have every media pass for all the celtic championship games the boston garden i saved everything and it was great but i found something and i'll show it during a look in that i thought was gone forever and almost brought tears to my eyes it was that great now being serious my my mom saved a lot of stuff that i thought was gone for good and because when i moved out of the house and i just kept stuff there and then she kept saying if you don't get if you don't come back and get this throw it out and then she eventually threw out a lot of stuff but she did keep a couple of things god love her and i i'm just going through she had my final report card from the university of dayton member when i said i got a d minus in journalism because i didn't go to the class it was eight o'clock class by the way kids don't take an eight o'clock class the final semester of your senior year even if your major might happen to be journal.

"Guy who's going to bring a team together even deliver you to the promised land stephen i like watching rondo play in his prime especially a lot the fact remains the higher his usage the lesser the celtics fortunes which it was which you're talking about something totally different than we're talking about max we're talking about you're talking about locker room chatter you're talking about what people perceive as betrayal and all i'm saying is listen i don't enjoy having this conversation because i happen to think that ray allen is a great great guy what i'm saying to you however is that it's not an accident that when you see a perkins you see the starting five for the boston celtics championship squad there's always one guy missing and that guy is ray allen it's not kindred perk it's not rondo it's not a poor pierce or k g and how they they have spoken publicly about how they felt desert it hold on hold on stephen behold on stephen a i feel like you're missing the point is well on this i think you're backwards engineering it i don't begrudge cagey your paul pearson does guys saying that ray allen was disloyal that he betrayed them i think we've talked about this on this program i think loyalty when it comes to fans and teammates it can be it can be a rational that should be about passion they should hold that grudge but you're backwards engineering because what we're talking about here is where did rondo and ray allen go wrong this is talking about before that betrayal ever happened this is talking about things that happened in nine this thinks happened in two thousand eleven and what i'm telling you is the greater context of rajon rondo and locker rooms from dwayne wayne jimmy butler and chicago to his teammates in dallas voting him out of a playoff share to him going sideways with so many guys sacramento i'm telling you he has an earned the benefit of the doubt on his on his problem with ray allen as an individual you could say that but what i can point to the fact that the very things that ray allen has done since he departed validates what was transpiring between the two.

"Is the strongest brand in the history of basketball in the known universe like there's no stronger brandon the lakers celtics it's no because the disasters of one championship behind the celtics they played a much larger more glamorous market end the vast majority of the celtics championships came before the the the modern era before the threepoint shot before the absorption of the teams however you wanted to find the modern era in the nba the celtics all but four of their championships came before that and the lakers ten in the modern era tend to four but magic sprint with la stephen a you're absolutely right when he showed up in seventy nine eighty they had six championships and now that he's taken the helm of the team as president they have sixteen the magic johnson error there were five ships in the kobe bryant era five more and he comes in with the million watts smile with the pedigree of the winner with the charm and charisma to get it done imagine when lebrun james and all these other free agents were and we'll be sitting down with the various executives according them when their free agents why did pat riley get them not donnie walsh dining whilst very competent executive because pat riley comes in with the gravitas and with the branding of the lakers and with the charisma and the force of personality to get it done the same thing here with mitch cup checks mitch cup checking to sit down and convince a lebrun james and paul george hey this is the best idea for you or will it be magic johnson with the leakers brand behind him.
