"Everybody a little bit about it and why you wanted to write it. Yeah harry twins is the story of our family is the story of my husband. Duggan and my daughter sat there and the reason people have very long hair echinacea turban-wearing sick set the were also raising up his sick and so They both are twins because they often will have top. That's right mugging under his turban. News pucca under his putt guys juna judas award for abundance up and set the often chewed whereas long braids but when they when she was little she would watch again she would like hop on the stool next to him and watching ties turban every day and it was like an everyday moment in in in our home and it would take my breath away every single day because in that time they had together right. They were connecting over something deep. They were connecting over their faith. There were connecting over our community. They were connecting over our ancestry. They were connecting over our parents immigration story and i. I knew that this was a moment that was deeply meaningful for me and it will one day i think deeply meaningful for her and i really was keen to share it with others and so that is the genesis story of hair twins. And this isn't the first time you've written about your daughter said yet. Can you tell us about the first way you got in here with us. Yeah yeah so. I took my first book with super setia. Saves the day My daughter was. She's is less so now because she's seven you know so she's like an adult and so she's pretty much she had conversation with me. David harry styles. Like excuse me what happened to you. You are seven. I sent you to music for three weeks unacceptable. Yeah it was like Why she's like. Oh tom we're melissa. Some blondie and airy styles but not too long ago this the child that was wearing a wonder woman costume every single family weddings pictured a wonder woman costume and i thought it would be great if i could find a book where the girls sort of looked like my daughter on the cover was just like a superhero. And i went to the story. I went to the library in hoboken And i came up. Empty and i was super disappointed. I went on amazon. There was nothing there. And i i think i i had become used to not seeing myself and my community represented in literature that i kind of forgot that we belong there too for a little while and it wasn't until i was looking for this book for set. The of that like it really. It tore me apart. Like in a deep way i think as a parent you want to provide for your children the things that you know. We're going to stretch their minds right in books. Our windows and mirrors is how we talk about them. And i wanted. I wanted a book. That was a mirror for. And i couldn't find it and so i wrote super cepa saves the day where there's a little indian girl who looks like set the as she has to braids. She scared to take the slot. She wants to get on the tallest side hoboken. She's scared because she left her cape at home and she thinks all the powers and the cape and through a series of doing kindnesses for others and tapping into her own bravery. She realizes that actually. She's the thing that is super cape is nice but you know everything she needs is right inside of her. But i often i would say i have two more books coming out and i i really center the stories of my family and my community and myself because i don't feel like that is the thing that has happened before And not in the in in the way that i find fulfilling and now i think there. There's so much space for all of us. To sort of starring arlen stories and i feel grateful to be able to to write them. Yeah that's so well said. I know you mentioned this a couple of times but i also read an interview that your experience growing up was that you kind of felt invisible in some ways. Have you gotten feedback from other parents. Who have read the book to their children or have had a similar experience to yours. It's my very favourite part of writing kid lead. And that's my very favorite part of my. Podcast is the amount of messages. I got and photos of kids with the books and like kids dressing up like the characters for like lit dance school or kids just being like. Oh my god. This is my name right. Something there was a girl named suck. Dad she likes you like this book is about me and it is. It is about all of us right and let me tell you. There are plenty of non indian kids taking this book to school hair twins and being like i'm a hair twain with stones and that is the point the point is that we should all feel deeply connected right to the people who love us the people around us people in our community and are able to sort of enjoy these books that yes reflect my family but also reflect the greater troops about so many of our lives that we are loved by people that we are. We are proud of who we are. I know you said she seven but as she thrilled to be sort of immortalized in literature late why she is so extra about it too like she's so were down at the beach in the summer. It asbury park. And there's a little bookstore here and she got a job there. She volunteered their three. I she does yes. She works at three hour shift to the asbury book. Cooperative where she also ties is the section and then the real power. They let her do the window display. I'm yeah so the first shift she was like would put hair twins in the window. I'm like that's really thirsty for your first ship to wait until at least your third shift like relax. But she's amped like she's amped and people come in and should be like. Oh can i help you know. Because she's like graphic novel connoisseur and they'll be like oh i'm looking for a buck you like. Have you heard about hair twins. And it's it's it's wild wild but she's proud. She's deeply proud. And i think i think she's just not pry. I think she's proud of me. That's really wonderful. I imagine like the inspiration. Does it extend to not just how she feels about herself. But do you think that extends to her creativity like you said. She's a graphic novel connoisseur. Do you think that's something. She might see herself pursuing. I know she's only seven while she tells me she tells me all the time. She's like i'm not going to be a writer. I'm like okay. I didn't ask you to be a writer. So thank you for this rejection. So early was not really something a brought up. But she says she's going to be a meteorologist on mars so okay great go get it. I don't know what kind of need there is for that kind of job in the world but like go get it. I imagine that when you're writing this story you picture what it will look like and have visions of that especially for a story like this. How did you go about collaborating with illustrator. Because the illustrations are just so fantastic and they seem perfectly suited for the book. But was that something that you were heavily involved in. Were you worried about it. Not looking like what you imagined it to look like when you started you know. The process is so interesting. 'cause like the way i didn't know this until i did it but like you write the manuscript and then publisher buys it and i was so lucky to get into little brown which is like my dream house. So little brown buys the book and then they make illustrator recommendations and.

"When i was dropping out and really depressing made me great mix tape and it had sexy stadium it and i dismember listening to it over and over me too. Yeah falling in love. That's and feeling kind of like it was dangerous. Sexy obviously I had so much. Yeah it's such a great association with but and so maybe this isn't good to hear like where do songs come from. But i just learned a friend of mine told me that. I'm reading a book about the beatles that it was it was it was lennon's disillusionment with the maha-rushie In india because he saw that the maharaja he had he had held him up to be this. Like the pillar of spirituality and in fact the maharaja just wanted to like fuck. Yeah he just wanted to get his groove on. A lot of religions have ended up being overpowered numbers. Girls end so the original lyric was maha-rushie done so if you listen to that song now in that context it's really interesting you you made a fool of everyone You you made a Yeah it was actually like a negative thing and that's really cool. I also i think about. I really love across the universe. But i love fiona apple's version and i think like i read somewhere like john lennon was never happy with any of the recordings and but they put that one on the album anyway and i like to think that john lennon have been like. That's it with fiona apple's version. Oh wow yeah. Wonder that about covers. I asked him on the show. I asked sir sir barilla's about that about doing a cup of somebody. She does a great yellow brick road. If you're a good laugh at rallies to the house you this will melt your heart this version of it and But she described at it being like but she also was like very confident in it in the song poems. He played for john. Yeah and and she was like he was nice about it because it made it better. It was like we were watching that. Whitney houston documentary last night and like i wonder how dolly parton feels about whitney. Houston did too you know. I feel like she must must love you have to. Yeah if whitney houston saying anything added. I had ever been close to. I love it. I'd brag about the rest of my life. Have to okay well man. That's sorry about that. Tangent ketchup Back to the usual boring remastered chicago gala. Gotta say mustard. Oh joke especially most of them. it even if it's like if i ever used ketchup i'm nixing mustard in. Okay i've been using a lot more in cooking like i made a meatloaf. Yeah i think in in glaze or something. It's great you'll yeah you'll never use catch up in cooking and if you're you're you're not you're not making food for me..

Something happened with her company recently. She's getting her company. Yes she has that like cosmetic that. Yeah yeah and they were making false claims about being able to prevent covert. Wow of course something about it. Yeah it's very stephanie. It's on brand. Yeah but harrison's been so supportive. Um sorry no i appreciate that i. That's i needed that. That's good talking of the michigan accent. So good i guess you grew up near michigan but very near michigan like an hour drive or something and everybody who had any money or would i consider money. Growing up had a house in michigan. Oh yeah in cars. They would say they're cares. They have nice cares. Cars and wisconsin. Wisconsin was over there to lake geneva. Oh yeah we'll share. What is is that so you grew up doing that. You grew up knowing how to do you era for those. It was like. that's how everybody even like chicago. It's sort of similar like may goal bit harder. Like you naturally have slander. Yes i naturally have the most beautiful accent world. Yes the most beautiful vowel sounds. Mom and dad did yes. I have a little bit. Connecticut weirdly has a flat a will. There's a weird thing like buffalo albany buffalo ny in chicago. Yes me too. I do that. I like it's probably a way to show off. But i am. Oftentimes i'm right. Yeah i gotta get home and put god was such great characters. They were the best care. Yeah a ridiculous who were your. I still feel that way about reality shows but but like now it strikes me. There's something even interesting in a way that the bachelors in the bachelorette state all are vying to be famous to some so. So they're all like performing graham. It's less. I think to me because because of that i you just know it's like this is just an extension of instagram to you to be like a brand whatever person i want to see somebody who is off their rocker invested in this still happens. But it's right you're right it's it's like every now and then i'll much bachelor and i and i do love the first part i mean. I think that's like that competition and that fear of being sent home it's like you can't fake bat. That's very real nuts to make remain the roosevelt. I don't care about. But then i think like there are certainly shows where it's real and it's their fiancee. Did fiance off. Colty colton my guy you. That's my brother in saint one of the funniest things i've ever seen in my entire life. The more consumed pat altea. Okay okay.

I don't quite know what it's or and it was my favorite teacher. Mrs smith minutes escape richmond. She was nervous. She gave a speech she. She called me stephanie. The whole time. And then i found out it was like because i hung out with like kids with developmental disabilities lunch timers. Get an award for the i'm out. I did something cool like you know. wrote a great essay. Yeah well it is cool. I mean looking back that you could probably see how cool that is like. At the time it was just like at the right. It was like oh these. I'm gonna go talk to these kids today you know. What was this correspondence dinner like. I've i've that to me. Seems like it. Potentially the scariest room imaginable. was there. Anybody that was that was so intimidating to make fun of that was tough to get through or was it just once. You're up there. You just kinda like start flying. It's probably different. Because i'm not a standup so i didn't feel like i had pressured. Be a stand up. And i i you know i'll everything that i was saying. Made me laugh a lot. And i think it was like. I didn't look at it as like. This is a way to further my career or anything. It was like i. This is a chance to do this with obama as president. And i'm such a i just thought the world of brock obama and still do and was like you know big i had his like i had a little barack obama sticker on my purse when he was running for senate and i remember california. It was like what does that mean like with brock obama and then like to sit next to michelle right so that was like it's a i have. Oh yes to this. Because it's obama and actually they asked me in such a weird way. My dad texted me. New said my friend from the tribune nast. If you wanted to do the correspondence dinner. And i thought he meant himself. And i was like cool. Dad you should do it like a At dinner like go or no. They want you to hosa beckham. couldn't have come through. My dad was and it was like i had. I was in a really low place. Because i'd been dumped earlier and it was like heartbroken. I like had to go to california for the summer and live on top of a hill. How long sicily did you get expelled for it. Well it wound up being only for that semester. Because then i was welcome to come back my junior year but by that point i felt really bad there and then I was going to. I missed too many credits. Jim credits. You both have real connection to the truth. You're writing. Is this way. But like i always felt that way about your characters Certainly the ones on weekend update they. They felt so. And i'm sure a lot of people agree that they felt so on. They felt so real they felt like the way people talk and not not even dialed up. That much hartman's felt like yes. There's something about and i think he is similar. It's a year. We think about it like his just somebody that's like he's this straight white man with confidence to just like doesn't know sometimes doesn't know what like something could be happening back on like everything is great here but you know and it's like a hard. It makes me laugh so much. I think access when a back panel always makes me laugh because she has a so that at like commanding the room. I totally confident wrong. That's the best. Everything's under control unfrozen. Caveman lawyer was like well. Ladies and gentlemen. He's kind of blind to the absurdity of it. How specific are those characters because they feel so your characters they feel so specific The the person you don't wanna meet the at at a party. The girl that you get stuck with a party is that is that just an amount of people that you've met. Yes and i think it started by making fun of myself and then but then also thinking about my straight male friends stories where they like started talking to some girl being like and then like oh wow i can't believe what you just said and i can't get out of this. I have no experience. that's talking about. It's funny someone asks me like well. What about aren't they're men linked house light will usually if a man approaches you. It's like right away. I was like. I didn't approach him. I own it's on him. I think like she's certainly more real and specific and i remember there. Was someone else on facebook or something it really is like a wrote in two thousand twelve. I which is like facebook was the big social media and somebody had written around the election. How will i accept our fate. That's coming to all of us. I think about it a lot and into to read about somebody who shows that path. Who was so courageous. It's inspiring it was really inspired sweden. Yeah and i mean. I don't know about you but i find it very calming to me too. I because i feel like i'm also somebody that for whatever reason throughout my life. There's been times where i'm like. I'll like spin myself into this. All i can wish for myself is that i accepted in that moment and that there's some kind of that. I'm not scared at the end. I know bargaining was an is an interesting word. I imagine. that's probably right now. I would deaf. I'm sure i know i would do that. We'll what if right. How about i just can we. Just oh yes. I remember seeing that in man on the moon in the any kaufman movie and he's okay. I'll go and do this. And i'll try this experimental thing and Did you have reservation any reservations. Once you decided this was something that you wanted to put out into the world and you compiled These writings what were your reservations about sharing it and and also says how weird is it now to be talking about something that was the with somebody who's relative stranger How weird is it to be talking about something. That is deeply somebody that can have a three hour conversation. That like well we're gonna do. We have to talk about best and get has to sound. So that doesn't feel weird to me. I'm okay with sharing with somebody who's not who wants to share as well my reservations. I mean the ones that i feel like aren't tied to any kind of nasty self deprecating negative.

"But i remember. I mean that era when i was on. Snl which would be eighty eight till like ninety one. You really did have to see it when it was on tv. You had to see it and and you of course have been part of this era where so many people are watching it afterwards in all these different ways and they're watching it for days afterwards so there are the people that watch it live while it's happening and then there's this entire other audience that's checking it out which i think is kind of a gift. Because they're seeing your work over and over and over again sometimes in trading it and i think that's contributed a lot to how much people adore your work. That's a great way to look at it and should be the only way to look at it. But i think i still i i would worry. That's like there's an oversaturation or it makes it harder to do recurring because people feel like they've seen something so much more than you've done it because they can watch it over and over i disagree. I think it's a really good thing for you. And i'm not gonna let you know it is. It is good. And i'm i'm trying to be better at like not qualifying things. That should be positive going. But here's the astros. Here's why it's not positive. Yeah but that's natural. That's a defensive mechanism that you've developed over millions of years of evolution so you can't be this evolution sucks if it got us to pat. You could have had a long millions of years. Eight million years ago you could have developed a third lung and a much larger brain all of us could have but we decided that lizard decided. I'm gonna go with more self doubt and crippling anxiety who needs a third lung and a much browns and self doubt. It's funny it's like sometimes. I'll meet people in different monkey. We come from a different. I would i. I love that. Don't i think you mentioned that phrase in your book. I read that in your blah blah play. Yeah it's like a thing. I truly believe in so you meet the hemsworth different monkey. I know what you mean. I there's so many Over the years. I've interviewed all these people in person on the tv show. And and these men i think. Oh you're i know that technically were both adult male homo sapiens. But why does your chest look so much different than mine. You really are as you would say a different monkey. You know that happen. That's why on steroids. There's know so funny. Because when i think most people would hear that oh excessively strong has a book out. Maybe the immediate assumption would be. This is going to be a book of wacky stories of you know silly stories and What you've written is a really beautiful. Meditation over it takes place Mostly throughout cova did But threaded throughout the book and really. The theme of the book is the loss of your cousin owen. So i thought. I'd i'd kind of start this part by saying i'm sorry about your cousin because reading the book i feel like i know this man and i like him and this loss really does come through. I mean it's very nice that you sit you know it's great to feel like i'm letting people know him and like him because he was just such a gift to me and it's nice to share that in a way that i think you know it's the way he's still going then to know and then even today that we were losing him and i knew he would be gone that night. It was sort of all night. I kept thinking where in times faces on in this moment. Where is he on his journey. Whereas you know a said there's like the whole Where in time and space is. Oh and am i was really part of the book and so i think that that's the weaving. It's funny it's funny is the wrong word. I'm going to say it's funny in that way that were you know what i'm you know what i'm saying when i say funny not that i must path. I'm just laughing at your. Very personal loss is hilarious. No what is peculiar to me. But i can relate to it is. There's a lot that i find is would be helpful. If i was going through loss reading this it would be a little bit of a manual of this is not a bad way to process it. This is not a bad way to metabolize loss and have it mean something. Does that makes sense. Yeah that's very kind of you to say and i would hope That's sort of part of why i would publish something. That's like insane to do. If you're at all a private person. But i and i think the couple of things that i heard back early on after doing the essay for new york magazine was sort of hearing that from people that it was at all helpful felt like well that is then a reason to publish it. I thought there's a part of the book. I that Really struck me which is at one point. You're talking about a relationship you'd had in the past With someone and it's implied that the relationship wasn't the healthiest relationship. And you don't really get into specifics but you you say that you reached out to this other person in the relationship and asked. Could you write about it. You wouldn't use their name and this person wrote back and said no. I'd rather you..

"And i think when i hear people discuss it i was like everybody's missing the mark and i get party. I get why they missed the mark. 'cause cover colorado them black men and black women. It affects us differently. But i will say color resum as always a benefit for light skinned people in a detriment to darker skinned black people of ours always been a detriment. It's like there's no thing in this for us it. It helps us so when we heard people talking about the color ism and of course the main person saying what was local. Reason was monique. Monique will feel differently. If you had hit ashley because you would've heard all different conversations like yet you would have heard the you are violent aggressive and out of line. And i want her off the show. If you hit somebody who who was lighter than you you would have understood that hence why everybody is forgetting what what kind of person it was. Pre dean yeah. She knows she knows what time it is actually is married to a white man in ashley's only twenty five percent black because her mom is by ratio. So has she hit a woman who is only twenty five percent black with the white husband. Who's pretty powerful in the dmv area. All in the way that ashi plays victim in place the karen in most situations abner. She's created mass the way she would have had mony hand up in jail for quite some time so please. So 'cause when i think about everyone's like fighting words i'm like so that means when ashley said to Katie that she is not mentally strong enough to be here or you need to fix that holding a heart instead of the whole between your legs that mean cajun a beat her ass like a and she didn't she said i your stupid if i called you. I'm your dumb like yeah. I like friend of katie. As opposed to eighty. I don't know why. But i just loved her own now. So high key. Danny lee or lay depending on how you ask bided to open up the discussion on colorado's them again and i heard a lot of people having very reverse. Racism conversations about color is unlike yes sound like white people when they talk about racism. Do they do. That's not how this works. Danny lee who is literally who put on a song called yellow bone which sidebar. I've been asking people. And i think someone pointed out that Beyond say said yellow and a song. I don't remember the song. But when i think about what we call light skinned people. I've never heard yellow bone of always heard red bone so night might just. Maybe i'm just old. Because i'm like i don't what the hell she call herself yellow so she meant him. I'm just lifting. All of us yellow bones win in actuality it was actually dishonor to the baby's baby momma who is darker than her so you are not uplifting anybody. You're trying to sit on that woman as darkened on her because you play side check for a few years. Then you know you got called up to the majors. The she's a clown she's a clown in a one-sided situation shave with a short funny looking womaniser who is expecting another baby also right now so like mayo. This is not. I'm sorry this surprised that you want us to fight girl. I know he is pretty lips. Because i'm i'm a sucker for good lips. But i'm like yet he has. He's an angry little man but he seems durable at the same time but still though baby..

"I can't ask them do something. That's above their scope but to try to act like what he did wasn't vile was like always not that serious. My is very serious very serious because one when it comes to domestic violence. Black women have astronomical high rates of it and a lot of the times. It's like well. If she wasn't mouth and often she wouldn't get hit. Which is why. I so go back to. Kansas has shit bothers me. It's like how dare you also have some black women talk. She has the right to be beetle. Who the think you are. So i don't like this. I don't care if it's another woman i don't care i'm tired of y'all will. Black woman opens her mouth. Somebody deserve to put their hands on him. And who the fuck my absolutely not. I don't give a goddamn was. She said apple. I'm never going to be okay with that. I don't like that so it was like to see pictures of this woman. Literally bloodied and broken and i know mentally. She is just broken because you know she loved that man. So there's the rope. And i'm like i'm not going to be here with y'all can't do it like i get it mony. Because y'all faith don't care she put a fucking hasn't a girl. Kennedy should a beat her ass. Period should have been on site because it would have been on site for me like you know we can. We can get in a ring and discuss now words with my hands. Because i'm like what. I can't talk of people. Who do this are cowards. Monique is a coward. Because you went after somebody who you thought was the weakest one because you damn sure knew better to do than to do this to disalvo. Because had you done that sale you know that you would have been thrown under the jail and that was what was really funny to me. How people can't saying you know candidates running her mouth and then you know calling the authorities. Are you aware that if she had done this to giselle. Giselle father is a prominent civil rights leader. Well-connected do you understand that. Has she done this to genucel. Mo- meet would have been in jail and was probably would sued her and singing. Almost every mony has. Don't get it twisted. Monique is a coward but she's not stupid. She knows that she would've been in some deep mass. Has she done this mess to giselle or cherise right or route in this. 'cause robin there were like like robin We're using your y'all's notion of talk got hit when somebody says to you come over here and say that in my face that means robin should beat her as it was like. Oh really so you wanna fight okay. So all right. 'cause you invited that in so before you say she provoked me and mike. So you didn't provoke robin because you literally said come. Say that in my face and see what happens. Oh okay you ma'am providence from baltimore please. Don't play us. It's like girl this what you won't but if i come over there and you put your hand let me should be joe ass like if we're if we're using the same logic that it means rama should beat you up because you you provoked into a fight but that would have been happening. They're like oh a bomb. You should control. You should've controlled yourself. So when they had to call arisen discussion..

"Many hollywood stars are showing love for cecily tyson. Sicily passed away yesterday at the age of ninety six how she was an icon paved the way for so many people tyler perry posted a nice tribute sort of regina king who said her legacy had left an incredible mark. Sisley won emmys a tony even had an honorary oscar. She famously fought for roles but sh- that showed strong black characters and she refused to portray anything else. Can i tell you put her sit at tribute as well as i got the medal of freedom from Barack so you know not only she award. She won hearts Because of the roles that she picked if you ever get a chance you watch that autobiography of jane pittman and what she goes to that water. And the i'll never get that. That's what i said. I want to be an actress. Took that one to buy five minutes. That scene just for her to sip the water but just a fantastic actress and she wouldn't play prostitutes or drug addicts which are always play. Wonderful and beautiful woman. But yeah you know. I think for actresses like how we think of oprah and how we think you know the mantell jordan's at pave the way for us. I think cecily tyson was and is that for every black actress on this planet. And i hear a lot of times when i go to these hollywood. Walk of fame's and people start to save their speeches. Her name always comes up because she she ran so we get walk out and then she did it she did. She went through the fires. She will always be remembered for her elegance and grace and she is the one and only and who could play her. Who can do the story of sicily tyson right and they met actress. Kimberly kimberly elise. She has that. Okay okay i have a weird feeling as aretha anointed jennifer hudson play her role before she left this planet. I have a feeling every hollywood actress was talking to sicily. Tizen about carrying on that legacy. So i'm sure. She knighted the one that she wanted to have a license. Day was just kind of looks like her acts like an yay one legend absolutely legendary life

Panera Bread/Au Bon Pain: Ron Shaich (2018)

"Ron Shake isn't a household name like you say Howard Schultz but you could argue that. What Howard Schultz did for coughing Ron shake did for cheddar broccoli soup or the SEO cheese he's Bagel because like Howard? Ron Wasn't just focused on product. He was interested in creating a space of place where people could hang out for a long time. Maybe even have a PTA meeting or social gathering and really linger over that Bagel or cup soup. This is the famous third-place concept concept that both Howard Schultz and Ron shake wanted to tap into in. That's how Panera became one of the fastest growing restaurant chains in the world. In fact if you've invested the seven thousand dollars in Pinera stock in nineteen ninety nine. You'd be sitting on more than half a million dollars by two two thousand seventeen now. The thing is if you met Ron shake say in high school. This is not the path you've predicted for him. Ron Wasn't even interested in business. Is Passion was politics. His parents were raging liberals and Ron grew up going to rallies and volunteering on campaigns. All over New Jersey eventually went to Clark University where naturally he majored in politics and he was quickly elected to student government. And that could have been Ron's life life except for one day when something happened to Ron and a group of friends something kind of small but something that when you look back on it probably probably changed his entire life. Yeah so we. We were in a local convenience store called store. Twenty four cross the street from the main entrance to the Clark campus and they accused US shoplifting and tossed us out cecily guys just being rowdy earnings or wild. No we were shopping but I came back to campus episode and I was in my dorm with a couple of friends and I said you know. Why are we shopping there? How they can they treat us like this? What supports that store? We said what do we need what we can we can do this ourselves. We can have our own convenience store and I said you know this isn't going to be that hard. Let's go do it. And we approach the university. They weren't so keen on this but I moved the question to student body They voted in support of it and I basically agreed to spend that summer between my sophomore and junior here opening this convenience store guy. Wow So. What'd you guys Sal We sold Everything from drinks to Munchies two cookies and candy and you know our assistant manager would come to my apartment at five in the morning and we actually would go to this deep discount supermarket and buy I don't know ten or fifteen baskets full of merchandise that we'd stocked the store with and We hired twenty or thirty different students to work there. I will be very franken. Saint Joe's more interested in that store than when I was in my own academically. And and your guy who's all still focused on public policy in government but I guess this it was Kinda cool you liked. He kind of liked doing business running a business. Yeah and and you know. I didn't see myself as that kind of guy and it took me a wile to make sense of that but in so many ways running a business is no different than campaign in fact a campaign is a the business that that essentially has one day in which it ends a business campaign that goes on and never ends so at this point in his life. Ron Wasn't quite sure what he wanted to do. Business or politics but people around him saw how how much he loved running that convenience store and a lot of people said. Hey why don't you get an MBA. So Ron did he enrol at Harvard. Business School in Nineteen seventy six. And when he finished unlike a lot of his classmates who went into banking or finance ron decided to go into retail and he took a job in the mid west and a place called held the original cookie company. Twenty stores in shopping malls We grew it to about one hundred and twenty five. I took the job as the third year of the NBA. What I mean by that is I took a job as a district manager? Basically Iran ten or fifteen of these cookie stores half the United States and I spent went My time running around the country and I ended up opening thousands of these cookie stores around the country so as certain point you're learning about the cookie business I guess and then at a certain point you get this idea like hey I can do this myself. I can have my own cookie store yes and and I can literally remember traveling Cross Indiana. I'm away to Fort Wayne Dope a new cookie store and it hit me and I said why are we opening this in a Mav. There's a huge opportunity open these in in an urban setting. Why don't we open one and I can remember going to my boss? I remember him taking me to meet. Beat the CEO of the company. Said I wanNA open an urban cookie. Store looks him and he says we don't do that here. We Open Mall based retail units. I thought to myself well. If you're not GONNA do it. I'd like to go do it. Why shouldn't we and I'm the Kinda guy by Sam going to do it? I want to go do it and it led led me to actually resigning my job and I moved back to Boston and I started looking for real estate and the reality was. Nobody would Li space for cookies. Find any sir for cookie store because they thought it wouldn't make enough money to pay the rent. 'cause I had no credibility. Yeah I had no real money I had you know no balance sheet to sign a lease and so I went to my dad and I said I I want my inheritance. Whatever it's going to be I want the opportunity to use it and I had about twenty five thousand dollars Ned Essentially let me. He gave me seventy five thousand dollars and that one hundred thousand dollars became the GRUB stake the equity. That allowed us to build that. I four hundred square-foot cookie store. Wow in downtown Boston. What did you name the store? We named it the cookie jar and I can remember. We took the toll house recipe. Right it off the bag. I bought a small mixer and I would pass out cookies in front of the stories that we were building. It and I'd start to adjust the recipe based on what I learned talking to customers and and you were the baker. You were making cookies yourself. Yeah we opened. There were three employees. I made it was me and to folks I will never forget at that day. It just seemed like people never stopped walking a coming in and purchase fifty thousand people day going by and I'll never forget it. I got to the end of the day walking past or foot traffic. Yeah but I got to the end of that at first afternoon. We opened one o'clock guide and by six we closed and my back was hurting. Oh and legs were hurting. And I can't in the money and I I realize we only brought in four hundred dollars. I mean you forget when we talk about business what it is the self the four hundred batches of cookies buck each and the amount of energy and work that goes into
