Get these two things out of the way first, and, most importantly, Mickelson defied reality and on the first one to own that and admit that it was incredible. I mean, what else came, buddy say, Or do you want a guy that age on that track playing the way he had been playing coming in? Just did what he did? I mean, he literally literally came out of nowhere. To rip that measure an unlikely measure and you can't flirt your way to it. He didn't back in. He earned it. Man credit to fill This guy is serving the entire world. A Thanksgiving feast of Crow put in the time leaned out, made all the right shots when he had to. Gotta give it to the guy. I mean, it was amazing. It really was amazing. Period. No one was denying the fact that this guy's game was garbage coming in because it Woz just because you're a fan does not mean that you thought he'd ever win again on that big of a stage. The Gulf media didn't believe it. Guys that he plays with did not believe it. No one did except this guy, which means two things again. Absolutely incredible. It was amazing. And it makes you a liar. If you say you saw it happening because you didn't You can love this guy and a lot of you do And that's fine. Just don't lie about your expectations, Man. Try to be honest with yourself. It's not that hard to try. To be honest. Try to be accountable. I am I'm tipping my hat, man. He was amazing guy really was amazing. And nobody could take that from him and Alison and an inspiration to all you could still get it done at that age. You want the guy dead man? Literally. He reinvented himself. "Deciding that you want. You're going to go live somewhere else. You're not gonna live in the city or you're gonna be a professional athlete for a city and then not live there, either in the off season or whatever. Hey, it, it's not worth the risk. For the salary that you're being paid. You need to do everything you can to make yourself more valuable, not disappear. I hear you right? The voluntary attendance next week for you know, Oh, ta is around the league is going toe. It's going to be kept pretty ardently by reporters to see what the numbers look like. To see if there's talk of a fully virtual off season is going to be taking root in the form of players not showing up because it is voluntary. There are no finds that play if they choose to do so. We'll get into that topic, probably more next week. We probably talked about a longer than we even anticipated today because when we didn't want to talk to you about today is a little bit more fun than that. It's about the young F C quarterbacks. This was sparked by a tweet sent out by CBS Sports HQ over the weekend, where they basically lined up for young A F C quarterbacks. Side by side and just tossed it out. Rank these cubes one through four and there were pictures of Baker Mayfield, Josh Allen, Justin Herbert and Lamar Jackson. And all I'm going to tell you is Didn't even respond to this. But I was included and added, and all that stuff with all the responses by every bills fan that was ticked off by somebody not putting Josh first. And, you know had Justin Herbert first all what are you talking about? He's the offensive Rookie of the year. Lamar Jackson can throw Baker Mayfield physically limited more than any of the other three. Josh Allen was the one year wonder s O It set off a firestorm. Gosh. Yeah. It's like they gave everybody a flamethrower. With this discuss? Yeah. Oh, my gosh. It took on a life of its own right. Every one of those four quarterbacks had somebody saying They were, they should be in the Hall of Fame already. And somebody else saying they should never been drafted. Shiv played tennis You know, That's how that's the wide ranging opinions you got. I'm exaggerating. Make a point. But that's And it's really interesting because these air four quarterbacks who had pretty good years last year, all of them. Yeah, but you know, Herbert was a surprise because of his rookie season. He Played well. Josh, of course, was Runner up in the M V. P race, Baker Mayfield finally got a head coaching staff and a team around him where he could play well on Lamar Jackson's coming off. On M V P type season and had a target on his back, but still had a pretty productive Yeah, so we wanted to spend that into something else, not just about those guys on their own merits unnecessarily. So our Twitter poll today is which young, A F C quarterback in 2021 can do for their team what Josh Allen did for the bills last season. Let us know who you think that is. And why you can hit us up on the tweet sheet at one bills lively. Give us call 803. Oh, 5 51 885 52 5 50. We have to take a break. But Aaron Buffalo hang tight. "We are here to talk through the third full day of the two thousand twenty one. Ncaa tournament is a wild. That'll be remembered for a number one seed losing to an in state opponent and for three double digit seeds advancing to the sweet sixteen. We'll get the top seeded illinois lose loyal chicago in a bit. But i want to start with the double digits. In that one on sunday number eleven syracuse upset number three west virginia. Jim bejon against all odds is in the sweet sixteen number twelve oregon state upset number four oklahoma state wayne tinkle against all. Odds is in the sweet sixteen in number fifteen oral roberts upset number seven florida. Paul mills against all odds is in the sweet sixteen dead-leg makes sense. What in the world is going on in indiana. You want me to make sense of this. No shot and need you to make some sense. I'm not gonna make any sense of this. It's been a gloriously. Chaotic and we are knocking on the door of historic and double a. tournament so with these Upsets in addition to others. First of all eight teams from eight separate leagues are now into the sweet sixteen and with the other obviously on monday The most is that could If that could happen Also we have had so the instable a and shops the david warlock who's obviously the media coordinator of all the stuff. He tweeted this about twenty five minutes before we started podcasting so we define an upset as a team seeded five spots or more lower than their opponent we've already set the record with eleven such occurrences were midway through the second round. We have the so another way of saying that is. We're not done the second round yet. The already been eleven games in which a team separated by. At least five seed lines have seen the team lower seeded when it is history. And it's it's just wild man. I actually think we're also on pace. I haven't had time to research this but are. Cbs sports hq team is researching it. I think we are probably on pace. Because of this to have the highest collective number for all the seeds meaning like we've got fifteen in their plus a twelve and oregon state plus eight with loyal. If you get what. I'm saying like when we get to the sweet sixteen. If you add up all the seeds it's going to be the highest total we've ever had there and i can't make any sense of it. I don't know if because like if we'd had this enormous setting with fans and stuff would it be the same. No i mean every single tournament x exists unto itself. If you played this thing again you're going to have all sorts of different kinds of results but is it because it's happening in the pandemic in one location in the venues it's happening at is that allowing for more chaos. I'm i can't say that. It is and i can't say that that's not the reason so i'm loving this parish. Get enough of all of this. Although i will say Oregon state is maybe the most random and congrats to the beavers man. It's the most of sweet sixteen. Maybe ever this team was nowhere. Near the bubble it has not been relevant in its own conference for most of the past four decades and has come out of nowhere to get into the second week for the first time since one thousand nine hundred to

"Wilson tackle. Georgian. This is very surprising. It is a need for them. And so obviously this is one in which would you look at John Robinson? The general manager, Mike Vrabel. They must have been graded much higher than I do. Or some of the other officer. Line coaches. I talked to the league had once told me today made 1/4 round grade on Wilson. So this is this is surprising to me. However, it is a need, given the fact that Conklin now is no longer there. But bottom line. I don't know that this past year he has good of years two years ago, But again everyone's value chart of this point time. The draft is usually a little bit different. And so he though it feels the need that maybe some development needed here. Don't believe it. The most amazing place it'll dramatic, heart rending. It's d A's top story. He goes. It's your cold Open. So that, of course, was Roger Goodell, announcing the pick. At the draft last year, but also analyst Brady Quinn for CBS Sports HQ, saying, I think this is a reach. I had him as 1/4 round grade. And the Titans just took him at the end of the first round. Probably because they're desperate for offensive line health. And that's where I think John Robinson is being disingenuous. Yesterday when he spoke about last year's first round pick. It was we did all of our evaluations on him. This is not the same guy that we evaluated it. Meantime, here's Brady Quinn. Admitting this feels like a reach. And I think would Robinson is doing is trying to wash his hands the responsibility over a disaster of a first round pick. And I understand that Isaiah Wilson has to take.

You play every team in the other conference twice and is going to be a play in tournament. To decide the seventh and the eighth seeds. The surprising baseball news from Tuesday Theo Epstein, stepping down his Cubs president of baseball operations after nine seasons, including the World Series title in 2016 that snapped the 108 year drought. Have seen explains why now with one years still left on his deal, it became really clear that we'd be facing some significant long term decisions. This winner. Decisions with long term impacts, and those types of decisions are really best made by somebody who's going to be here for a long time, Not just for one more year, that'll be GM Jed Hoyer taking over. Epstein, who also ended the Red Sox curse in 2004 said it needs a new challenge, but has no plans to take a job with another team next season. The Mets and the Phillies are two teams still looking For someone to run baseball ops. Dodgers star Cody Ballenger underwent surgery on his right shoulder. That's the one he dislocated on that home run celebration during Game seven of the NLCS. He is expected to be ready for spring training. Good news for bears quarterback Nick Foles, his hip injury not as serious as originally thought. When he was carted off late in the Monday night lost to the Vikings. X rays were negative. He could return next week after the buy. You want the Seahawks, who have lost three out of four. They have the worst defense, the NFL in terms of yards allowed, but safety Jamal Adams says he will take that situation over what's going on with his former team, the winless Jets, so it got so bad toe where it took a toll. We just like the laugh cliff Kingsbury is the head coach he's already said that he loves collar Murray. He said that he could start any team with any guy. He would wanna have Murray's guy. And that was before I even got the job. Now, this matches up somebody's going to get Josh Rosen is saying he said this to Sports Illustrated on on a video that they have. I definitely understand the situation. I mean, it's annoying. But it is what it is football's a business. I and I definitely the higher ups have their decisions. Whatever decisions are made. It's my duty proved them, right? If they keep me and prove them wrong, if they shipped me off that does not sound like a guy who's fully invested in staying there. Like, unlike the Lakers and their players who had the meltdown when their names came up. He seems to understand that this is how it goes. But it also I think is an indication that he realizes there's a very good chance. He's on another team in a couple of weeks. He realizes is really care banks banks and everything that's what he Josh is telling you care less. They make the decision. So if if I'm here. Great in. I'm not great. But if I'm here in you ever, let me get to hear Roger status run your ass outta town. When I get a chance, that's we see it. He saying he's going to if you ever let him get to that status. And it's not because they're good a couple years ago a couple years ago they had Carson Palmer they had some things going on. They were they were NFC championship game. Yeah. But they're they pick tenth last year another pick. And I there's a chance that they're going to take a quarterback in back to back years in the top ten that to me indicates some level of having no idea what you're doing the you either missed badly on the first guy you're about to miss here. If I'm Josh Rosen. I'm not I don't know if I'm not thinking good, please. Please get me out of here. I was just going to say, you know, part of the reason why maybe he is somewhat indifferent isn't simply because there are banks everywhere because he knows where he's located. What you make zion's historic night at Wake Forest, some listener, please rewind. What Paris just said count the names? I don't know. How many he said I'm going to say that was I'm gonna say that was twenty four names. That's my guess you went way long. I thought you were going to do you didn't need to include Bilas on there, by the way, I think Bilas an occasional or the podcast shots today. Listening. I don't know if he was really worthy of that. But I get the point you're making how hard is it to do plenty hard. But I also say this there have been instances in recent seasons. Where Marvin Bagley the third has been able to put up certain numbers that never done by Duke freshman, and in fact, I mentioned this on CBS sports HQ last night. And if you are not by the way, let me to sneak in a plug here Parachinar gonna be on CBS sports HQ almost daily throughout the rest of the season. So if you watch games like I watched last night GP Tuesday was a loaded night for hoops. So had the double TV's going streaming all types of stuff, but using CBS sports H Q on the on the apple TV or the Roku or on your phone. You'll be able to see us chat with the that way. In addition to your podcast. It'd be sure to check that out boat. I said on H was this. It's remarkable what Zion Williamson is right now when you consider and I'm not going to run down, the laundry lists of names that you mentioned over the past just GP just since Irving on. There has been a fresh. Man to come into almost annually. That has been considered in retrospect, some of this is folly, but you know, borderline generational or once every three to five kind of prospect, right? And and I'm not even talking about guys at Kentucky. I'm talking about the guys that go to Duke and every season there's been something interesting about a lot of those players Irving Bagley Okeafor was a first team all America as a freshman. Jabari? Parker was really really awesome. When he was there to a number of other guys. And yet as we sit here midway through this season. I understand that there is already Zion Williamson fatigue starting to set in for some strap in because I know I mentioned this month and a half ago in the podcast. If you're tired of it. Now, you have not seen anything yet. Because college basketball has not made its turn to center stage. Just yet for Williamson to continue to do this considering the hype considering the other talent he's got around him the program. He's at the coachie place for it's amazing. His PR player efficiency rating perish. I remember we talked mid December, and it was above forty. And I said, well that is you will not be able to maintain that that is that is not a sustainable rate because having PR in the thirties is incredible forties is essentially Everest. It's at forty three point zero. According to college basketball reference right now, that's insane. And by far and away the best it's just one of many statistics. But if you are able to have our in the forties when you are halfway through season. It's just flat out stupid. He is the runaway favourite for freshman of the year. And yes, he is by far the favorite right now for national player of the year. I'm not gonna sign off on it. Now, we have seen so many things turn we were saying trae young had locked up in mid-january lassie's. And we saw what happened. But it's just it's just outright incredible..

"But he knows now he's got to turn around and play Davidson, which has defeated Carolina in recent seasons. So just keep an eye on that. And then Mr. little we talked about him on CBS sports HQ and hit after the game. I believe you can find that that recap that video on the site or on CBS sports app. If you want he continues to come off the bench. Roy told me on Friday. He's the best athlete I've ever coached, which is not that. That's I don't feel like ROY just toss us out that kind of stuff willy nilly. So I think that's a pretty high compliment. But from a basketball standpoint pair, she's just not there like he was not well coached before get into college. I think he's still learning and he made like a couple of bad plays early. You could just tell sometimes it's weird see an athlete like that. And you just say like just can't be on the floor in this game at this moment. And it was is the case there. I do think he's got to get a lot better line is really gonna be a final four contender. But I think overall collectively the defense is a bigger issue than the stuff with with the little which I think is driving a lot more of the conversation, and obviously some speculation. Yeah. It was interesting because. Jeff Goodman asked ROY about Nazir after the game. And ROY clearly wanted to use that as an opportunity to discuss something that had been written within the past week minder standing is that it was a Bleacher report report or column, and I remember seeing it in passing, but I did not read it. But I hope I'm not mischaracterizing. But this is the way it was described to me is that it suggested that ROY was holding this little back in theory to get him to make it where you can't leave for the NBA. And this is something that people have said before about specifically about ROY like that he doesn't like his freshman to flourish. Because if they don't flourish his freshman, you can keep them around. Well, I I would just say that's not true. Like, you don't have to be a great freshman basketball player to enter the NBA draft like little can actually play the same role. He's playing for the rest. Of the season. And I'm not sure that he will. But he could still enter the draft and he'd be a lottery pick. So there is no such thing as holding the little backs. I mean, you can you can limit as minutes bring out the bench, but you ain't keeping him out in the lottery. Raleigh doesn't have that kind of power. Marvin Williams was the number two pick parish came off the bench right NBA people to not care about this stuff. Like if you are a projected top five pick coming out of high school, if your freshman year goes, well, you're probably at worst going to be a lottery pick if it doesn't go. Well, you're probably at worse going to be a lottery pick because they're going to think that your coach. And there are exceptions to this galaxy being one, of course, he went late first round. But they're going to assume that you're cushion us, you the right way because often college coaches don't use. One in NBA prospects the right way. I mean, I love Tom Izzo as much as anybody. Watching. Jaren Jackson play every night. It is clear. They did not use him the right way at Michigan state. He's having a better season with the grizzlies as nineteen year old rookie, then he had at Michigan state. And so sometimes coaches just don't use players in a way that maximizes who they are. So the NBA people don't care what ROY Williams doing little. So the idea that he's holding him back. Just. Be like if somebody wrote a column saying Gary Peres holding a little back like I don't have that power. If the little wants to be a lottery pick he's going to be that thirty nine do about it. And there ain't nothing ROY Williams can do about it either. So Roy's asked about this or he's asked about in the seer..

And the Detroit Lions we'll find out exactly what the what Gilman and the giants are getting back. But now it is full on sale mode for men and for big blue. Let's welcome aboard. Right now. David Samson four executive with the Marlins now a CBS sports HQ MLB analysts. Hey, David, Mark Melissa's, Andrew bogusch. With for a couple of minutes this morning. Hey, now, it's my pleasure. Good morning. Good morning. What was your take after taking in game one as we all did or the fall classic last night up at Fenway park. David what was your overall takeaway from what we witness last night? I was sad. And I was so excited for the pitching matchup between Kershaw on sale. And it's like building up something that's going to be great all day launch. After a post-season of very few bridge starting pitching moments back to good baseball, crisp two and a half hour a game that would end three to two and it just didn't happen. Not even close. It was mediocre at best. David when you were watching Chris sale. Did you see someone that might have been physically compromise to a certain extent guy that just wasn't pitching? Well, last night guy. Just wasn't pitching. Well, I mean, he wasn't locating his fastball properly is slider was good. He's he's changed up was only. Okay. And the dodgers just were on it. They were patients and they had a good approach against immature shocking. Given they don't normally have a good approach and Kershaw. He just you know, when he's only throwing ninety which is all he throws now. If he's not it is breaking ball and crisp. He's just ordinary through his breaking ball practically every single pitch in the Red Sox are just a good deep lineup. And you're not gonna get through that lineup by doing that. I just was disappointed. I don't know how the Red Sox are gonna lose four times out of the next six to the dodgers. I'll tell you that. It's something that an Andrew brought that up earlier on the program David and we're sharing a brain on that one and we'll get to the rest of the series. But let me ask you if you don't think sale is physically compromised them why why the dip in velocity first setting. He stole the ball ninety five ninety six miles an hour. Five is throwing the ball ninety one. You know, he's the enemy. He hadn't pitched much August and September. And I think what happened here with the Red Sox. Interestingly enough is they tried to save him. They put him on the DL twice. They tried to avoid second-half sort of decline that he's had the last few seasons. And I think he didn't pitch enough. And I think it was a little rust Dom. I don't believe the stomach had anything to do with it or the belly button ring or any of those things I think he just has not pitched enough. And it's something I've been talking about for a long time. We don't pitch pitchers anymore. We take we were so careful with them. We don't build up their arms and they end up getting hurt. All the time. Do you think the do think the conversation around Kershaw not being a big game pitcher in the postseason is justified? Well, I mean, the stats would tell you is just not what he's been during the regular season. He doesn't have a ring he has not performed. He had a good start in the LCS in game one. And he's just he's not in game two. I should say he's just not hasn't performed way. We would expect of the best lefty of our generation next to Randy Johnson. And so he's gotta wear that. And now he doesn't have the quality of pitches that he used to have it's not good timing for him with his opt out, and he his expectation that he was going to be well compensated by another team with a long term deal. I just don't know if that's going to happen. I don't think it's smart move. I know team to do that. David. I want to go back to what you said two questions ago about not pitching pitchers enough to build up their arms, so many things in baseball are cyclical. Do you think at some point? More people agree with you and lower levels of minors. Maybe some of the leashes come off and guys work longer in those arms get stronger, I'm worried it's like me saying I still use my typewriter into. Come back into vogue. I don't think we just keep moving forward. I think analytics have taken over the game. You look at who's being hired to run teams and GM is. And you look at how decisions are being made. And how lineups are happening. And and how the game is. And the question is is just a game we want and that's up to him. It'll be in its owners to decide because right now, it's it's very it's becoming like a technical game. And when you look at that World Series for a casual fan, do they want to watch that we fifty two minute game last night. Is that exciting baseball. Is that for the casual fare not for us who couldn't wait to watch it? And we're going to sit there and watch every pitch no matter what. But what's happening with the people who don't follow the sport every day. And I just I tell you that it's each should be a game of stars and stars start with starting pitchers, and we're just going away from that David you mentioned in terms of, you know. You don't see this Red Sox team losing for the next six games? The the lineup here in Kershaw hinted upon it they beat the a lot of different ways. The double single stealing bases. Could hit the ball over the fence. What makes this what makes this lineup which was great productive? They want one hundred and eight games in the regular season that difficult to go up against Rome have one quality that I loved and looks for when building a team down in Miami. The best is we could they don't give away at bats ember. And that to me is something that only good teams do and not even every good team can figure out but one through nine there is not one easy out. And even in our heyday with the Marlins we had easy outs. And the dodgers have easy outs. There are in almost every team. Does it's not every team the Red Sox. Just don't be Yankees have easy outs. But when you go when you go one through nine, and when you know, Benintendi, getting four hits endeavors gets a clutch hits in two outfits are devastating for a team. I've been there when you think you're getting out of an inning and all. Of a sudden you give up a two hit that score that scores a run. It is deflating the entire team both offensively and defensively. And that's what the Red Sox do everyday and David when was the last time you saw manager as hot as Alex Cora every decision. He's making seems to work right now. You know, it's funny. You say that every year the World Series winning manager is that. Jack mckeon did some crazy things they all worked out, and we have a ring because of it the next year. We did the same crazy things they didn't work out. And we didn't make the playoffs. When you win. It's because everything you do works. Yeah. You know, you're right now, let me ask you even though they have got a difficult task at hand. How do you think Roberts who the you know, the dodgers have worked? I know. Some of the names have changed to get themselves back in the situation. They were a year ago. What what do you think the best chance for the dodgers here? If he if he envisioned a path for them winning for the next six what are the dodgers needed to do? Well for starters are really tonight has to come out and win. They they're gonna say their their narrative is this. They just need a split in Boston these first two games. So all they have to do is win tonight. And they think they'll have the momentum. The problem is they're not gonna sweep in LA three games from Boston today have to win twice at Fenway in Fenway is a great home team the best in baseball. So instead of counting on winning game six and seven you better win game two so their best chances right now tonight with review trying to make the game longer. I've been talking about the middle relief and the bullpens in Saint whoever has the best middle relief is gonna win the series. What? Sad state of affairs that I'm right? Will come down to bullpen. But if we can change that that would be helpful for the dodgers. It's funny. David, I I see your point about middle relief. But it doesn't it doesn't bother me that much. I don't know. Why maybe I like baseball too much. I'm not being critical enough about the way things are going. But I didn't last night wasn't on entertaining to me. And I'm okay that some other guys behind those starters came in and made made the bigger pitches. No, I think it's great watching what we watched and seen match and try to get out of their bases loaded situation. Almost get out of it. And watching how it's would come in and give up a three run Homer when it's possible bias could've stayed in. There's a lot of strategy and a lot of things to talk about. I was talking about the casual fan doesn't look at it. The way we do tuned into watch curse on sale because they'd heard they heard of those guys, and we just didn't deliver the product that those people would have wanted what we did delivers. Exactly what baseball has been doing all year, which is starting pitching not lacking deep into the game expected. But I was disappointed. You know, we got about thirty seconds here quickly. I know it's a big topic. What about these Star Times here, which is a disaster for not only the like the games how late into the night on the east coast are ending exhausted. And I'm not complaining, but you know, you the games lasting go to midnight. You're on the air early. Kids are trying to go to school. It's it's been the age old question. The problem is. Fox pays the money. And that's the money that is used to increase asset values and to pay players and FOX wants to get his latest possible should be for the west coast while stayed in east coast primetime. That's how they maximize their revenue. So it's never gonna change. No matter. How much we moan about it? David Samson, CBS sports HQ major league baseball analyst, David thanks a couple of minutes. Enjoy game.
