"Scene there because it wouldn't make Any sense, I guess or a difference with the drivers getting in and out like every two or three minutes, But I would think that it would help. Some got to be better than nothing at all. Yeah, Union that represents a lot of the UPS employees is the Teamsters and the head of the local Teamsters in Waco, says some of our drivers have recorded 140 inside their vans. Think about that You're going, uh, grabbing that package from the backward That's probably where the 1 40 is. And then you're still in the heat going and walking and placing it on the front step isn't coming back and then getting into a truck where nothing is blowing. Except for maybe you get some wind if you get to get up to speed, But if you're stopping every 2 to 3 minutes, you're probably not getting any speed to get the wind. This mother in Waco says her son was totally healthy. He was only 23. She tried reaching him while he was working for ups. He didn't respond, which was really unusual. So she went up to the UPS facility and ultimately called police as well. And they found her son dead in the parking lot in the parking lot. No one noticed. There's a body laying down in the parking lot. Mm hmm. So they're calling for More more supervision. They said that the least ups could be doing is calling in and checking with their drivers. Hey, you're doing okay? Definitely. If you haven't heard from them for a while, get a little bit concerned. Don't wait till a family member comes up to the facility looking for them. Yeah, This is David Reeves. He is with the Teamsters local in the Waco area. He's commenting about the situation of the package. Cars that are driving delivering the packages have air conditioning us out of them. In some cases, they've had employees record temperatures up to 140 degrees in the back of the package cards where they were The family has an attorney. The autopsy has not been completed yet on the 23 year old, but Rod Tanner says they do want answers here, and they're looking at all of their options. There's no lawsuit pending at this point. Will make a final determination about that, as soon as we have obtained all the relevant evidence it is concerning, though, that there have been so many heat related fatalities, injuries and deaths. How many, Mr Tanner? I have not heard of any. I'm not saying they don't happen. What is that number? Well, I would say one is too many. And I'm just kind of curious. We've got many people that listen to the show that that drive in these ups trucks and I think it probably I don't know if The Postal Service. At some point they kind of were like that to the least the truck that I've seen recently look like they've been converted from vans and stuff, so hopefully they have a C and I'm But if you're driving is this just You know what you expect when you go to work for ups is that there is not going to be any A C. Do they do anything to Check on your well being during the day. Do they make sure you've got a Yeah, cooler, full of stocked ice water on the side that they supply for you. I mean, what are they doing to combat these types of things from happening if they're not going to install a see, the family says this 23 year old driver had passed his physical with the Department of Transportation. And again, the mom says he was in very good health. Very, very hard working, and she's as you would imagine. She has just devastated here's Georgia Rodriguez talking to Waco station and made a call or or got in there, and nobody would have noticed that my son was missing. All right, So they found him in the parking lot, and he was dead. She was 23 years old, right? 51283605 90 call or text with your thoughts on this story. We also have the city of Austin preparing to award cash to people. Who do a really good job of not picking up their cell phone while they're driving. You heard that correctly Cash prizes for not picking up your cell phone while driving the city says We're on pace to smash all records for traffic deaths and serious injuries in Austin, so we have come up with an app. And you can download the APP and then agreed to take part in the contest, and we have $10,000 in cash prizes to award So many things with this. I'm going to start with Why in the world would you want the city of Austin to track everything you do? What? The city of Boston of all places. Why would you have them track you, but that's set aside. I do not understand this trend. Of putting out rewards for good behavior. Whether it is to pay you for not looking at your cell phone while you're driving to pay you not to shoot someone, Um I don't understand it. It's like if you want your dog to do something, and you continually give them a treat to do that. What happens when you take that treat away? Do you think that dog's going to continue to do it? Well? When you cut back to police force, and they have to virtually end traffic enforcement. You're in a kind of a tight spot. So you have to dream up these cash prices for people to do the right thing while they're driving. How about you just fund the police department. If you get caught texting while you're on your phone, you pay a fine not we give you money for not texting Lewis Laugh is with the city of Boston. He talked to CBS Austin News. And he says Austin's roads are very, very dangerous now, so we want everybody to download this app. And try not to pick up your cell phone while you're driving. We're going to keep score and some of you will win cash prizes. We've already exceeded 430 serious injuries and fatalities this year in Austin. 430 people killed and seriously injured.

"It's the highest number in a Pedes recorded history. Uh, yeah, We do have a larger population. And so there you go. 74% jump in the number of murders. Uh, the police chief says it's It's really about a shortage of officers. But I think there's more to it a ice. Lindsey Regas has more on the story to what she has to say of the 60 homicide investigations in Austin this year, 49 have been solved working on the remaining 11. Several of those we have very solid leads on the latest involved in deadly stabbing on West Sixth Street and a deadly shooting at a nightclub in North Austin on North Lamar Boulevard. A close friend identified the victim as 23 year old Jackson's Alaia. Interim Police chief Joseph Giacalone says the murders are up 74% this year compared to last year, and I think that much of that has to do with the number and proliferation of Gun crime and the guns that are available on the streets and interpersonal arguments are becoming deadly when guns are introduced into that environment began, says staffing shortages within the Austin Police Department have also played a role. The availability of officers to, uh to show officer presence to conduct proactive policing. Is very important in the deterrence of crime president of the Austin Police Association can cast today addressed staffing shortages. In an interview with CBS Austin last week, he said response times have increased by two minutes on average. Now the department is looking to form a committee to look at different ways of possibly having the department run be live for death. I mean, we, especially on a shooting or stabbing call. Chief taken, says Aggravated assaults are also up by 10%. However, other types of crime are on the decline. Are robberies are actually down. 6% crimes against persons over all are down 5% for the year. And her crimes against property are down. 7% Lindsey Regas, CBS Austin News. So there you go in general Chief, Jacqueline, who is by the way, a finalist for the permanent position, wants to see more officers on the streets. But the department staffing issues predate the pandemic in more is exacerbated by the city council that began reimagining this police department. He didn't speak out against that he didn't support prop. A. I don't know if he does or not. That would bring more police officers on the force and Increased funding and you know additional training for the officers. Things like that. I don't know how the interim police chief feels about prop a well he is interviewing for a job still for permanent position, and his best bet for getting that job is to be a puppet for the City Council and the mayor, And that's exactly what he's doing because he sure as hell had a good opportunity right there to come out strong. About. Here's what you get when you do your so called reimagining of police. You get a town that has more crime and more murder, And we don't have a show Todd, you and I don't come here any Mondays anymore. Without at least two murders that have happened over the weekend. It seems Brian is in Georgetown this morning. Hey, Brian. Hey, Good morning, fellas. It's funny how the police chief talked about guns. But this weekend's murders were stabbing that go. I think the thing I called in about the propaganda you guys are reading from some Government organization or study that talked about average family spending $350. $24 a month on food and groceries. That is insane. I mean, you can spin asking four bucks a week. That was only four or five. That's I think that's it. That's an average household, but but I agree. I mean, I think the numbers A little bit higher just about every time we go the grocery store. You know, the stakes are so expensive Lord, but that's an average across the country, and that's what brings the number down. It's probably more that's hard to believe. That's not saying it's propaganda. There's no way that those are truthful numbers. What What? What? What kind of money? You think family of four? I think they spend that much a week Do that Sounds more realistic. Absolutely. Yeah. I mean, you're gonna spend that much on hygiene and shampoo. We spend that food. Yeah, paper. And if you got a couple of teenagers in the house drinking a gallon of milk every day, forget it. Forget it. Yeah, I got you, Brian. No, I I agree. I think those, uh, little bit of, uh, you know. Yeah. Misrepresentations according to the CNBC, See story pretty low to me. Yeah, Exactly. Right. Are you still on Tiktok? By the way I am. Are you? Yeah. Do you do you? I'm not on tiktok. So I don't know what you put out there. Do you put stuff out there you during this monitor it. I do. There is a well Let me ask you. Have you seen any of this pop up because there is a new, disturbing social media trend on Tiktok. And this is happening, in fact, a lot down in San Antonio, uh, the Northeast high school there, And apparently, there's a new trend on tiktok of students, uh, stealing items from the school like soap dispensers from the bathroom. Uh, fire extinguishers, toilet paper holders on and on or anything that they can get their hands on. And they're filming themselves doing it and they're putting it on Tiktok. I hadn't seen it. I haven't seen since. What have you seen? I haven't personally seen any of them just seeing the story here. And this is a because I'm not on tiktok. But I guess this is the latest in such set yourself on fire. Drink cinnamon. Uh, habanero peppers this, you know, in film it. This is the latest. Yeah. I don't know what they get from this. I haven't seen it. I mean, I don't know. Well, I'm on Tiktok daily, but you may be right. I mean, there was the Millcreek challenge the cinnamon Challenge on and on. But But, yeah, well, I mean kids filming themselves doing bad things. That's that's been happening since the invention of YouTube. You know, uh, I don't know personally. Anything I've seen from tick now I don't take tick tock is not get well. I say this. You could tell me more. I don't think it's geared for my age range at all. Anything. I've seen almost most of what I see on Tiktok. If it just you know if pops up, you know, sometimes you'll have a link on Facebook or something Somebody wants. You see on Tiktok almost feel like I'm not supposed to be seeing this. Most of this stuff I see on there seems a little bit uh, you know, pretty pretty dang racy. You want tiktok? No, I'm not on tiktok. As I said, No. You see, there is pretty racing. Well, I've just seen some minute. A lot of inappropriate inappropriate for almost feel like boy. I shouldn't see. I should not be seeing this. Todd and don shows this real estate market is still red hot, our friend Chris Waters. His goal is to get you the most money possible. "Some staffing problems, and it's leading to a disruption in service. Starting September, 1919 15 high frequency routes will be reduced and late night bus routes will be suspended. They just don't have enough drivers and enough mechanics. You know people to drive the bus or fix the buses, right Cyrus Fields. He rides the bus every day. He spoke with CBS Austin. He's been dealing with cancelled routes all through this pandemic, And he says, this is going to hurt even more. It will make it to where I have to leave even earlier. To basically make sure that I make the bus to get to work on time. Capital Metro has launched a new hiring effort to attract more drivers and mechanics. Full benefits, and they're even offering a 35 $100 hiring bonus. Uh to some drivers. Well, that's in the zone. We went recently out of Houston $3000 for garbage truck drivers. So here you go. 3500 bucks, obviously. Um, What's the J? Like? So many businesses are looking for good help. What's the job? Hey, I mean, if you're a bus driver, I would think it's highly competitive. You got so many people, uh, you know, looking for truck drivers out there right? And, uh And maybe that's uh maybe that's some competition there for drivers in general. And yet it wasn't that long ago, Todd. We were talking about the surveys that have been done amongst the drivers and their concerns about safety. Right like 65% said safety improvements were needed now, and that's Weather leaning towards possibly creating their own police force so that that could be an inhibitor to people signing up. If they're somewhat aware of what's going on, they hear about those safety concerns that go well, I'm going to drive for somebody else where I don't have to worry about remember was public before the pandemic Capital Metro was increasing bus routes. Member that they wanted frequency. They wanted a bus to come by every 15 minutes. Yeah, right. I wonder if they've been able to keep up with that. And if the need is even there, with more people working from home? Well, that's obviously it'll. It'll force the executives there to take a look at the efficiency of their route structure. And is it really Optimal for you know the traveler and for the city and are there ways to maybe cut a few corners and still make it work for all that This might give him an opportunity to do that. Let's squeeze in a couple of calls here. Let's see. We got Michelle. Checking in on the top of Don show Michelle. Good Morning. Good morning. Yeah, What's on your mind? Well, I was just wanting to give an older woman's perspective on this heartbeat. Bill. Um, I have done in my life. Several women that have had abortions. A lot of them are no longer with us. They were over than me. And, um, I can say that not one of them. Uh, actually felt good about it. They regretted it for the rest of their life and several of them. Three, in fact, never had Children because they had such guilt feelings about it, and they were all the same. It was because They had had a one night stand or they one of them was engaged. And then he broke the engagement off and she lived in a foreign country at the time and You know, she just couldn't cope. So it was. It affects women. If I don't know about the younger women have how much conscience they have about this. But it really psychologically does affect the woman to do this. Yeah, I I can understand. Let's see, uh in round rock, Sandra. Good morning, Sandra. Good morning. Um yes. I just wanted to speak on this from someone who actually had an abortion. I had two Children and a really young age and my changed Um, I didn't believe in abortion, and then I got pregnant and so many women were encouraging me and this is in the eighties. Well, now it's easy. You should do it. And you know what? My kids are grown. I had another child after that with the man that I married and had another baby in a boarding the sibling of your other child. You don't get over that you, don't you? I regret it. I don't regret having my kids. I regret having an abortion and Even though I did it early on, it stays with you. And I believe in adoption had a daughter who got pregnant and I said You can't If you want to live here, you cannot have an abortion that you can give him up for adoption, and he's now Doing well. He's adopted with great parents. In school and Sadness there, but no regret. And I've never my husband and I Horrible for the decision we made and it stays with you. "65 tied Jeffries and Kenny Romeyer. Don was supposed to be here. He got in late late late early this morning. From what I understand about two, maybe three o'clock this morning. So he decided to you know, Like most blokes, we would have just came on straight into work and did a full day. You know, it is about the right time. Sure, And he decided to go home and take a nap. So he'll be for him. He'll be here tomorrow we get we get Kenny Romeyer, and that's a big deal. Thank you, Todd. Good morning, and listen. You can jump in any time you want. We're here till 10 at 51283605 90 so many things to get to this morning. On the national scene of the international scene. We're learning a little bit more about planes have been blocked by Blinken in Afghanistan. We can get into that a little bit later this morning. It's official. Texas has new, uh, a new voting integrity voting bill that is now become law and still a lot of controversy across the states across this nation when it comes to our abortion restrictions. Also we learned overnight that the Pecan Street festival that was scheduled for September the 18th and 19th. It's been canceled because we have a virus amongst us. And so they decided to while deny the festival there special permits Which is hard to understand after seeing that football stadium so pack this past weekend. Yeah. Just from a pure optics standpoint, the city doesn't have control over UT. Obviously, they do have control over the city permits. We understand that, but I didn't hear Austin Public health speak out against the football game. And here's the outdoor festival. Anybody has been a Con Street festival knows Especially the one in September. Whatever it's usually hotter than blazes, nobody getting close. Everybody's all stinky and sweaty. Nobody's getting close and up against each other. It's just a huge outdoor event. And so let me let me back up a minute. I don't want Austin public health or anybody to cancel a football game because of covid. I don't want that. It just seems just seems odd when you cancel her. Bad Festival of Pecan Street Festival and got so much else that's going on around town. And yet this is another casualties now of of the coronavirus here in this city south by Southwest, the Con Street Festival. What? No, no, it's not a casualty, the coronavirus. It's a casualty of those in charge that have made a decision to not issue a permit so that people can walk around outside amongst each other and do some shopping and maybe have a corn dog outside, just like they were doing. Labor Day weekend with their friends and family and massive crowds. Okay, I was just pointing to the backdrop that has precipitated all this action by the city that you just mentioned. So you're right. This is, uh, this is, uh, a disappointment for a lot of people because they look forward to these in the fall and the spring time frames. Austin's public health should be screaming from a mountaintop of something that has left a bunch of people dead. And that is like Travis. It's been an incredibly deadly year. Unlike Travis, and it's kind of fallen into the radar this week, the body of 1/10 person gone missing in the water has been recovered, and the Travis County Sheriff's Office says the victim was visiting with his family from Houston went underwater. And the second man also went under trying to rescue him. So what? 10 10 this summer? I don't know how many we had in previous years, but I don't remember it ever being that high. Maybe it Maybe it has. But I just haven't been a whole lot of talk about that. It's so tragic lot of people just trying to have fun out on the lakes and things happen. Things happen. And just a little bit more aware of your surroundings for sure, we just Yeah. It's just a tragic 61st out on the water. Absolutely. You mentioned Covid. Capital Metro. They're going to be changing some bus routes. They don't know They don't have enough bus drivers once again a common theme, regardless of the industry, Regardless of the business. We talked about it a lot, Todd, since I've been here with you the past couple of weeks. Shortage of labor starting September the 19th 15 high frequency routes. He had a very busy weekend. Yeah, the Austin Police Association. They're concerned about the rising response time and well, Here's the story calling the Liberty Weekend response times unacceptable. The Police Association says it's taking officers 11 and 12 minutes to respond now to major violent crimes. Even though the targets closer to 7.5 minutes, Mayor Steve other continues to defend the city's crime rate, telling CBS Austin This is not a problem that unique A PD even with all of that, as it's happening in Austin, our rate of violent crime is lower than most. It is 67 and you can jump in at 51283605 90. We got a lot to get to this morning. We're going to catch you up on a variety of stories, not just the border, but also Afghanistan and in a variety of issues affecting our kids at schools. I just went through a couple of questions out there. What was the what was the verification? Process, like getting into the Longhorn football games, showing your your vaccination card Or at least you know, a negative test. How did that process work? Was it were they able to move people through? You know to do their seats? Quickly enough. Were they checking at all? 51283605 90 from Mata. I saw very few people are actually wearing mask in the stands. But today when your kids go back to school, they will have to wear a mask. I think it's pretty interesting. You know, dynamics there and it was not just here in in Texas. Todd. I mean coast to coast. You look at the big college games. Those stadiums were beautiful. It was beautiful man. It was beautiful. The airports are packed Americans. We're living our lives. And it just feels good to see that and there were not a lot of mask that I could see at the games that I was watching. There you go. Now. You've heard the story there. In Patrick's News. The Austin Police Union is very unhappy with the response time over the Labor Day weekend. Remember, it was just a couple weeks ago, the mayor Steve Adler, held his held his state of the city speech, subtitled You're safe enough, So shut up, right. That's the mayor's attitude. President of the Austin Police Association is King Cassidy, and he spoke with CBS Austin, He says it's taking officers 3 to 4 times longer to respond to major crimes like assaults and murders, and he calls it an absolute disaster. Probably 11 or 12 minutes. We're having to wait for a police officer to get there when you've been shot or stabbed or Sexually assaulted or whatever the priority is. He blames the longer times on staffing shortages, delays in the cadet classes and officers leaving, you know, just leaving the job in many cases. Mayor Steve Adler. He tells CBS Austin that Austin is safe. So shut up police response. Time is certainly something that has to be watched the sole indicator of of what it takes to have a safe community. There you go. Mayor Steve Adler talking with CBS. All state is so difficult to listen to that guy. But you know, friends on the force Todd have told me that there are short on shifts on a regular basis. Not enough people to demand the shift. So it's a tremendous amount of overtime. I would love to see because I know a p D has blown through its overtime budget earlier this year. No kidding. So who knows what the end result is going to be after all this overtime from all these police officers who are not having any days off, and they're just working, working, working, the end result is more crying, right? And, yeah, the and just just one of the ways that that manifests itself with these longer response times. Yeah, It's scary. It only stands to reason you Got fewer people to go around. That's how it is heard from some police officers that that occasionally whoever's I guess on duty. Oftentimes they have to send emails out to a lot of police officers practically begging them to come in to to work the extra overtime that they probably already have done a bunch of overtime are exhausted. And you need a break. Yeah, so just to be clear. This is not piling on the police force. This goes back to the city, the so called city leadership of defunding the police and the lousy attitude of city leaders toward a p D. It's a war on cops. And and now we're seeing the results of that with a lot of people leaving retiring. Not showing up for shifts, etcetera. Yeah, absolutely. And 86 10 you could jump in at 51283605 90. Apparently I C u beds are at full capacity in this region. We saw that over the weekend. Yeah, the Department of State Health Services is reporting only to ICU beds available in this immediate area. Dr. Giancarlo is what the Texas Medical Association Spoke with Fox seven news and is hopeful that the slight downward trend the state has been saying will continue because you know what's going on our hospital systems right now is it's a very, very busy situation. And, you know, we don't want to see it get busier. She would like to hear somebody from our local hospitals at the highest level, like the president of some of our local hospitals, saying those things And I'm sure they're stretched into with staffing issues, burnout, things like that. Uh, but I don't hear the mayor talking about setting up a convention center field office the way he did a year ago, right? We've not heard about any overflow once again. His tone does not match. His actions and just a small detail are the I C u beds filled up due to covid. Or, as you pointed out on the show many times. There's other reasons. Those ICU units. Are are filled and then covid compounds that I'm sure, but it's It's not all because of covid, right? I think it's a staffing issue. I think it's a number of beds, two nurses. "Five. 8 17 Todd Jeffries and don Prior. Ladies and gentlemen, you can jump in at 51283605 90. A matte is in south Austin this morning, Matt, what is on your mind? Um, Yeah, I was just talking about the Article. You guys were just talking about about the light guilt classes that yes, there's get together. Yeah, There's a new report out this morning. It's actually part of a podcast. The Washington Post has been running for the past several weeks. Where they have a group of reporters, journalist activist if you will, and basically they're encouraging white people to form white accountability groups in the office at school and start pushing back on the other white people that don't understand how racist they really are. Yeah. Well, there's a couple of things undoubtedly that this is a new religion with people, you know, I mean, and it's a very unhealthy religion because they have an anti Christ and their anti crisis. Donald Trump, Um Yeah, And they don't really have a profit yet necessarily like a Jesus or Mohammed or of Buddha to look up to write, But they only have an anti Christ. You're right question. I question how healthy this religion can possibly be a And then be this is just going to create incredible amounts of resentment, racism and these people doing this? Yeah, all of a sudden, If they form one of these groups, they become unemployable. They become a liability in the office. In my opinion, that's just my thoughts. Well, as far as how we look at the office. Yeah, Charlie is in Maine or this morning, Charlie. What's on your mind? I think I'm in minor. I'm not really sure. I let my depth driver took over this morning. He wanted to get somewhere quick, and I'm not really sure. But I wanted to start a new segment for you guys called apologizing for whiteness. Yes, I got two things going on. But I just I thought about it. I got angry at first. Then I realized note. Get to it. Charlie, get to it every morning when I make my pep of coffee. Put in my cream because obviously I'm prejudice. I can't stand her black cup of coffee out of agreement. It must be a misogynist because I'm going to add sugar because I don't want it to be bitter against women. Wow. See you in hell after that. I got to photograph the whole white socks and sandals on the beach thing. Yeah, well, that's in And that's just for protection. You know what you don't want to sons? You know, you don't want to sunburn, your ankles. You don't wanna do that. I can appreciate that. Thank you, Charlie. Appreciate that. Wow. All right, 51283605 90 lumber prices are coming down. Cost skyrocketed during the pandemic, in part to a surgeon renovations, D I y projects and, well, basically a lack of truckers out there to deliver lumber. Now the chair of the Federal Reserve says both the futures prices in the current price of lumber declined substantially in the month of June, and industry experts believe that consumers will now see those prices coming down to Right now, the folks that would know that are people that are currently buying a new home. I guess. Right, Uh and and if you ask the builder about the prices say I'm not gonna They're going to be open about all their prices. I wondered. Yeah. If you're building a new home doing, you know, maybe a remodel or addition or something, but, uh, yeah, I wonder as far as those who have signed on the dotted line about You know, Here's what your home is going to cost. I wonder how how forthcoming are, uh, builder is going to be you know, as far as well, Listen, it's really not going to cost you that much now. Right. You know, we're we can come down on about 10 grand now because of that. They're not good at it. They don't like coming down water. I'm just wondering. I mean, you don't think they'll say that? I think I think maybe some folks that are having homes built her projects need to need to ask some questions. As far as pricing may be paid a little closer. Attention. Nothing wrong with asking. Yeah. Right, asking your builder a lot of builders have been putting, you know clauses in contracts that say the price at the closing date, maybe more because of the price of lumber. So that's in there. Uh, and and and if they end up getting the lumber cheaper, they may not be so quick to say. Hey, we got this little cheaper, so we're going to knock a few grand off? Yeah, exactly. But this should help ease the concerns for home builders out there. It really should. And I'm wondering if we are we going to? How soon will we see? You know, an increase in in that Projects happen. I mean, it seems like right now tapping like crazy. I need to learn a little bit more about Gap insurance because I think that's been a big issue when it comes to the value of your home what it would cost to replace it if there was a fire or something like that, there's there's a new gap in there right about what you paid for. It's what it's insured for, and then what it would sell today. For its there's a big gap in there. There's a lot of gaps and and if you don't have that kind of gap insurance, it's something you should, uh, looking to ask your insurance guy. It's on my list. It is 8 22 Have you used uber or lift lately? I have not have not. I have not. A lot of people have noticed a year. First he came out and said it's ridiculous for us to consider wearing a mask in public when this outbreak first came out And then then he did say the n 95 mask was effective, which is true, but we went from surgical masks, which are completely ineffective against us. The particulate size of that mask is 25 times larger than a particular size of of a coronavirus since designed for droplet catching from our mouth, so Then he went to say to match. Why would he say to mask would be better because one mask doesn't work. That's the science. The science is all in the data documentation of the mask themselves, and they should be discarded. Never reused. Not to mention not to mention telling people you should wear a mask. The show that you care about other people, that's that's not science. That's politics. There's nothing but But propaganda and then then to allow or allow people to think that using a fabric mask was any anyway type effective and he wore a fabric mask. Because they wouldn't work with same sex couples. Jessica Rosenthal, Fox News. There you go get a full reported the story on our websites at news radio, okay LBJ dot com. Closer to home here in Austin Phase two of the camping ban begins this weekend here in Austin and the City Council. Well, he hasn't done a whole lot had a whole lot of discussion when it comes to designating some campsites for these folks, so they're going to be told to leave, But yet we haven't been. You haven't really told him where to go. Right. Matt Mackowiak is with the groups say Boston now spoke to CBS Austin and sends the council Clearly has no idea what to do. Time for transparency and national solutions is upon us. It's time for the city of Boston for once and finally deliver on the responsibility that they have. Yeah, I kind of thought they would clear all of this before the rot rally that gets underway. But apparently not yet. The City Council is set to discuss the issue Monday. But but that that didn't happen. They had a little bit of a discussion earlier this week on Tuesday about some of the homeless money mostly about money, how they're going to spend some of the government loan money on Various things, but they didn't talk about locations or anything like that. And today is the final City Council session before they have their six week summer break to get people into transitional housing. We need to get people into non profit facilities, regulated campsites in areas that are safe. These folks can't do that. They need to go do something else that is Matt Mackowiak from, say, Boston Now the group that got the petition to get it on the ballot May the first Yeah, This is a This is a tough situation here. I mean, I think voters are rightfully outraged here. It's been a month and a half almost since they pretty strongly past reinstated that camping ban. I think the City Council has really dragging its feet for as long as it can. The main focus this week from council has been how it's going to spend $84 million in federal covid relief on homelessness. Which is already a you know, kind of a sticking a sticky point for for some critics who say spin it on covid relief and not not the homeless. That's what it's designed for. But that has been the bulk of the conversation all week. Here's Mayor Steve Adler with Proposition B and ability of the community. I think we have the obligation to Stop people from from camping in tenting. Yeah, no doubt. Absolutely. So now we have an obligation. Yeah, we've been screaming this for for almost two years now. There were and you've certainly had an obligation for the past month and a half today is the final City Council meeting until you know late next week. Next month least six week break here. Yes, So if they don't get anything done today, who knows what's good? Because I mean as of Sunday, Phase two begins and police can begin issuing written warnings. But that's what's going to happen. It's just going to be written more that's beginning Sunday, and probably for the next six weeks. They're doing this delay on purpose. I think so. I think we're going to see a whole lot of angry campers. I mean, and what are the cops going to do about it? They've already been hamstrung by their own city council, so they're going to go out there going to issue warnings. They're going to rile up this this city hall. Chaz, We've got down there going to agitate those that are already going through mental health issues and and it could get nasty. The City Council has got to do something. If it doesn't today, then yes. Six weeks we're gonna have to wait and who knows what could happen between then And now You know what There's you know, there's the rot rally is is back Beginning today We're going to have a lot of motorcycles on our streets and how many stories have we have have been told you're driving late at nights and a homeless person is walking, you know, near the gutter kind of almost in the street in situations like that. We should. We should warn people on those motorcycles, especially if you're leaving a bar tonight, late at night to be on the lookout. You may be driving into some areas where there's There's people walking around in the dark knight just a heads up if you will, and that reminds me of years ago, text dot actually started out this campaign where they were giving out like reflective vests or or wrist bands to homeless people so they could be better seen at night. That's right. I've not seen any person wearing those ever in the years since that they because they did you know, you bring that up bikes at night. People are tough to see. This would be a prime time for them to start wearing those reflective vests and whatnot, But I don't see that happening at all. A lot of, you know most of the time whenever a car hits a homeless person, it's the homeless person on the you know that dies. It happens all the time. It happened. My 35. It happens routinely in this city. But now if a motorcycle hits a homeless person or someone walk across the street that there's going to be a crash, right with the motorcycle, right, potentially have two victims now. Yeah, This is a This is a tough situation for everybody. We've got to come to some conclusion here because I mean, people are sick of it. People are just sick of it, and it appears the City Council is now sitting on their hands. They made another move this week today, and they could move forward with the purchase of the Candlewood Suites there in District six. It's in the city of Boston, but it's also in Williamson County and whatever she county they're ready to go to court next week on this issue jump in at 51283605 90 down show. "It's any new areas during the period in which it is a de funding municipality. The municipality must hold a dis annexation election in each area that it has annexed in the last 30 years. And that's big, because basically what that means is if Austin were to further defund a PD any neighborhood that the city is annexed over the past three decades can basically just hold a simple election and opt out. Hoffman says. The penalties don't in there. Before the sending the municipality taxes collected by the comptroller. The comptroller must deduct the amount of funds the state spin in the last year to provide law enforcement services in the municipality and credit that amount to DPS and as the icing on the cake municipality may not raise taxes over the no new revenue tax rate, or the voter approval tax rate, whichever is lower. And so as you can see, this bill would severely hamstring any city that cuts police funding, although it's very important The note here that cuts can be made to policing so long as they're proportionate to cuts made to other city departments. I did make mention of Senate Bill 23, which is very similar to House Bill 1900. But that bill applies to municipalities with a million or more people, and it would force them to seek out the approval of voters before they make any policing cuts. These bills are very close to law now, and they both will head back to their respective chambers for likely one final discussion before then, probably winding up on Governor Abbott's desk that then be signed in the law. Right. There you go. That's K LBJ's Patrick Osborne reporting you could jump in at 51283605 90. That's a very important word, Garza tells CBS Austin. The unit was started by the previous D A and is understaffed. Here's what he had to say to CBS. Austin. We simply need Additional attorneys to handle all the cases of police misconduct in our community. In other words, cops are so bad we're so busy dealing with complaints against cops. Incredible. Yeah, Yeah, You're right. Any direction No matter what little outline 10 Little City, little bird. We have drove between Austin and dripping Springs last weekend, my my neck was starting Get sore from looking back and forth. Just training and all the new construction. All the new business is just amazing. Absolutely. People getting back, man. Yes, sir. Hey, this week, the Austin City Council. As you know, they released a list of 45 potential sanctioned a homeless camp sites. And this move comes after is, you know Often, voters overwhelmingly approved proposition be banning camping in public right aways, and it's certain areas of the city, and Adam Lowy, a local attorney here in town of the lowly law firm. He's highlighting some pretty interesting things this morning. Basically, he says, he says, there's some well, there's several legal issues here to think about, he says. Now you have Ah, misstep by the city weeks later, when they rolled out these campsites, many of which are not legal to begin with, he says, especially specifically, the location the thing Like that, taking away parts from the people. Some council members have also called the list into question, as the city has noted that some areas have wildfire risk, no doubt about it heavily used parks. In some cases, Lois says, I think that you're going to see litigation on this because they're not going to be able to do this as easily as they want to. Talking about. You know these camping? They are these. These these encampments. Here's what's also interesting. I thought about last night, huh? Is if they do pick 10 campsites, where they allow homeless people to live one in each district. If they do that have 10 of them. That means that every single council member Will actively have to either defend it. Speak out against it. There will be no middle ground right? There would be no middle ground. The people in your district will demand that you take a stand either supporting the encampments or not. And it will become the political issue on the campaign for every district as these ongoing lesson election's around the corner. I think it's gonna be a mess. Also, well, existing local ordinances like no camping in public parks. Thank you. Thank you now CBS Austin smoke or several homeowners who say they hope to work with the city. But they have not ruled out some litigation as well. The next update on the city sanction homeless encampments is scheduled for June. The first Yeah, this is gonna be so mired in litigation and everything else environmental issues on and on and on. Uh, I I can't see. I cannot see us. Honestly, Seeing a difference in our homeless population under the underpass is in in front of our businesses For a long time. I'm gonna make a prediction that the homeless problem over the next five years in Austin will not only get worse. There will be more homeless in this city. But you will probably spend twice as much. On the homeless crisis that you do today. Yeah. Yep. Um, And the only thing I can compare that to would be Venice Beach. Los Angeles. Skid Row. Yeah. Seattle, Detroit, Miami. We could go on and on. I think the only way to avoid what an eval and evidently is going to happen eyes if you put the homeless like down at the convention center or something like that versus these camps, which involves neighborhoods and businesses, and on and on around again, environmental issues. Uh, the only or just put him out in the middle of the desert, not West, Texas and and done and where it's gonna bother nobody, but course that's not gonna happen. Holden in North Austin. Good morning. Morning. So I was calling to kind of expand on your conversation We were having earlier about, you know, just truckers, and I wanted to kind of take that even further and discuss. Skilled trade that the hole and you know whether bh fact plumbing trucking. You know, it's not specifically have been inch back background and there's just there's so much demand for quality people quality that people that have been trained well. Where do you go to school Board or whether you don't and one of the great things about it is it's not that the trade as a whole didn't have. He didn't get impacted by Cove it it all. But the impact was very manageable. For most people. Yes, there were some companies that inevitably had layoffs. And there were some those things. But there were plenty of other companies like my my own, for example. Where we were fully sustainable throughout the entire process, and we we we didn't have trouble getting everybody there 40 hours. Everyone has trouble making these things happen. And No, You're right, Holden. You you're scratching the surface of something we've been talking about. Even before the pandemic. We were talking about a shortage of skilled workers, blue collar jobs, plumbers, electricians, roofers, you could go on and on in the industry, there was a shortage of in it even more. Now. What's the problem Holding? Is it because for generations Parents have been pushing their kids to go to college and not even consider a blue collar job. I think that's exactly the problem. And I was actually talking to one of my technicians this week about that exact thing and the fact that I think part of what has happened and the industries are hard changing at their core and a lot of ways of They were so unfancied friendly for so long and many times, you know the father's in different people would be so disconnected from the family because their job of be so demanding. Don't you know there are other ways The trade of the whole have really began to swing in a different direction. That my company's physically Alright, I lead. My team is a family first base team. You know, we don't It starts to the family and that believes into the company. Yeah, and and you know what I see many other companies taking very similar approaches and as as as industries I see lots of changes that have happened within the various industries that have allowed Better home lives for people, and I'm hoping that That's going to help kind of fix some of that. But as a father that grew up that way, and you know, as a child that had parents that you know, they had to go through that they were disconnected. You know, it doesn't make sense in a lot of ways. You don't want to push your child does something like that? I got you understand what? You're changing? Yeah, well, there's also this element that blue collar jobs holding blue collar jobs. I'm talking about welders and plumbers. No, sir. Those air typically men that drive a pickup truck and and there is this this pushback against that kind of image that that toxic.

"Had a story yesterday about vaccinations outbreak. Always I don't want to get into an act an anti vaccine. Conversation because I'm not a doctor, and I can't give sound medical advice on the issue. But. But I will read the story now with the measles outbreak impacting the west coast, the anti vaccine movement is coming under fire from doctors and other critics now while the Austin metro has not seen any measles outbreak, yet public health director. Phil Wong an expert on this kind of thing are public health director. He would know he went to class. He took a class. CBS Austin this area is one of fourteen hotspots across America with an increased number of unvaccinated kids that are not getting the United States. There are actually a public health threat as we're seeing with some of these recent outbreaks now did you hear what the doctor said if you decide not to get your child vaccinated, you are creating a public health threat. You are a threat to the public absolutely about fifty percent of the students at Austin's Waldorf school are unvaccinated. Good god. Yeah. And across the state fifty six thousand kids are unvaccinated. I didn't realize the numbers for that high. Austin Waldorf school is in a private school GTS lost Waldorf, I'm assuming that's a private school. Anyway, fifty percent of those kids are unvaccinated. And I guess the things I read online people decide not to vaccinate their kids out of fear that there could be some autism that develops or something like that. However, there's no proof are no scientific study, careful, careful, careful, careful careful what you're saying. Oh. Channel set them off. Pretty hot about this saying, there's no there's no results. There's no study that has any conclusive results. Sounds me. Like on the the parents said to Austin's Waldorf school, a pretty serious about this though. Now, that's a significant number that is I don't know how many kids go there. But fifty percent of them are not vaccinate horses. Fifty percent or completely without a net. It's like good luck to you on your own. If you get sick. Hey, just hang in there and walk it off.
