Philadelphia candy makers on how chocolate was introduced to the world
"On Sunday and Chocolate is traditionally a go to in celebration for the holiday. Years, K Y W. Saddam's cousin, It's the smell of chocolate filled the building of shame. Confectionary but in the era of covert co founder Eric Burleigh says, if you can't smell it, But you can't come in. Eric, burly with his brother, Ryan are sort of candy historians in Philadelphia and he says before industrialization, chocolate was expensive. It was really meant for the elite, but the way we eat chocolate today is not how people consumed it in the past chocolate for thousands of years has been consumed traditionally, as a beverage like a cocoa tea really says the chocolate industry was event. Really revolutionized by Milton Hershey, who had roots here in Philadelphia. He had a soda fountain here in Philadelphia in the 18 eighties that also made being of our chocolate bars, and Burleigh says it was her. She who helped bring chocolate to the masses her she went to Europe and brought back the scientists and the engineers to build his factories. So what's new with chocolate? Today? For one? It's the hot chocolate bomb. Being credible is a liberty bell shaped, three dimensional. Bell with marshmallows inside, and then you can hit that with hot milk it home. They're also new flavors. We added a CBD chocolate and CBD caramels. One thing he says, haven't changed. It brings pleasure and happiness and delight in a time where we all need that. Ask cousin. ITT KOW NEWS RADIO MONEY NEWS

"Of CBD. And statins are a good example of that. Another interesting and popular question popped up this week on day before his can I get addicted to CBD. Properly tested CBD oil with with an accompanying certificate of analysis that shows a TNT less than 0.3% is safe and does not have addictive properties. March. 2017 study, published in The Journal of Drug and Alcohol Dependence, Review details the priest of previous space where researchers administered various aural doses of CBD Frequent marijuana users alone and in combination with smoked marijuana. The researchers determined that CBD had as much likelihood for abuse and addiction as a placebo. In other words, Know, addictive properties at all. And a 2011 study conducted that concluded that somebody has a better safety profile compared to THC and Researchers found that high doses of CBD of up to 1500 mg per day well, well tolerated by human subjects just to give you perspective, that would be three entire bottles of Max is Stephen CBD Oil used her day deemed safe and well tolerated. Compared to keep see. CBD did not impair motor and psychological functions. Nor did it alter the heart rate, blood pressure or body temperature. So to be clear, depending on what I am treating my recommendation averages around folks. 5120 MG a day, which is the most ever recommend. That was the most I recommend is up to 500 MG a day, which is very rare for certainly. Yeah, clearly we have We need more time for more answers to many questions. They're not just simple answers. So we got to go into it. Thank you..

"If you go to the FDA website, what you will find his confusion. Legality depends on state state regulations. The strange fact exists that though in some states it's illegal to sell CBD. It is legal. To purchase CBD. A 2018 farm bill legalized hemp cultivation and removed some of the cannabis. Are some candidates from schedule one status by creating a legal distinction between hemp and marijuana Under new legend. Under the new legislation, Hampus classified this cannabis that contains less than 0.3%. You need to see by way while marijuana is classified as cannabis that contains more than 0.3 t x c 0.3%. Because marijuana is categorized as a schedule One substance CBD that is derived from their wanna plant is still considered suddenly illegal, well, federally illegal, while hemp is now considered On agriculture commodity. It's still must be produced and sold in the regulations that facility or that the 2018 farm bill refers to The USDA has yet to create these regulations. Nation's first college course on this subject began at the University of Arizona. I'm sorry, the University of Connecticut in 2019, even with the research and legal power behind the course they are confused and continues. To sort out that just all confusing start all the rules, policies and laws surrounding CBD again. The FDA zone website is not clear. Many employers are stuck in old policies that do not distinguish CBD from THC, but hallucinogenic ingredient in marijuana. Unfortunately, you must follow the policies of your employer and sort Out the state laws concerning the use of CBD. A second most popular question building. Does CBD interact with medications? There was a question. I think the Sharma ages charm about that research has shown CBD is very safe to use. In general. However, there are some considerations. Not to get too geeky here. But there is a family of enzymes. And this is referred to in that question earlier, especially in deliver called the sight of chrome P for 50 system that processes foreign substances in the body. And medications are foreign substances, right? It is that Satya chrome P for 50 system that metabolizes CBD this concerto how other medications of processed in the body. This doesn't mean you can't take CBD, but it doesn't mean you need to change the dozing of CBD or the medication. It must be coordinated with your physician. There's a rule of fun. I tell my patients and again. It was referred to in that in that question for Sharma earlier. Are certain medications that have a great fruit warning on the label. This indicates that grapefruit and certain Citrus fruits inhibit the side of chrome P 4 50 system. If you see a great fruit warning on your medication, I tell my patients to avoid CBD momentarily until you speak with your position, so then coordinate the use.

"Oh, they could have made their CBD oil back then he meant that everything tends to see D D by now. I just want to remind the audience if you're just joining us. We're talking to a J. Sharma. He's a pharmacist on down a fantastic guy, and we just got through some questions. And do we have anybody else cued up? Thank you, Viki Sobel for the wonderful question. Yeah, Thanks. Vicky. Max and I were busy with THC 25 years ago. That's right on didn't have a sin pains of that time of the physical nature, So we were treating other issues. Anyway, We do have another caller Speaking of my childhood and my mom's on the phone. It's a family affair today. Hey, Strama. And we have we have my mother Janet, Janet woman. Hello. Hello. Mr. How are you? I am fine. How are you? I'm doing great. I'm so happy to be on here with your son. Yeah, I'm happy this year. I won't listen to his show every week. He and Max do a great job. Thank you. And I had a question for you about a medic. Interaction of the medication and I take every day, but, um Breast cancer five years ago, and I'm still on electrical and I'm wondering if there's any drug reaction interaction with that, and the CBD that I take every day. So CBD is metabolized. That means when it goes into your system, the body gets rid of it for say through your liver. Okay, There's certain enzymes that function in your liver to do that. And what I'd have to know first, is, um letrozole. What enzymes actually metabolize it. That means what enzymes take care of it so that it can get rid of it out of your body. Okay and then find out So TBD does have interaction. I would have to actually look up the letters Ole and I can get back to you and find out exactly what happened because I was sure I mean, you know, I didn't think there was an interaction with it, but I really Always had that question. It wasn't even know whether that's a good thing for me. And yes, well, the other side of the question, which would be what ends I'm does CBD interact with And maybe that could also be another cause I what I've heard and what Max and I tell people is if your drugs say that they interact with grapefruit. That that's a similar enzyme. Right. That's exactly right. Because That has similar similar effects in the liver. As I was told, I take Lipitor for cholesterol and I was also I was told to take that. You know, don't take it together with the CBD. So I take that in the morning and then I don't use the C B d at night before I go to bed, So actually, the cholesterol medicine should be taken in the evening. Um And I would just say, um as long as you're taking both of them simultaneously asked the doctor to check your levels because Your levels actually. You won't need as much of the Lipitor their tour bus, Staton on and You did previously taking CVD because the CBD actually slows the limpet wars. Metabolism. Out when it leaves your body a little bit slower. If you're taking CBD now, if you take CBD just every once in a while, All right, take it actually, every night before I go toe to go to bed. As do I, uh before Sharman Sharman. We've always told people that if they are on any kind of medication like that to take the CBD either two hours before or after is that is that sort of in line with what you say. That is, except for drugs that you would take in the evening. Okay? Like suppose. The cholesterol medicines work better because your your body makes cholesterol at night, So they want you to take cholesterol medicine in the evening time. So when you take cholesterol medicine, and then you take the CBD. It won't make the two hour window won't make a difference..

Arno Hazekamp PhD on Confronting the Unknown in Holland's Medical Cannabis Program
"So of course in the medical system you'll never promote smoking but then what while make tea or vaporize. It's what do we know about t. What do we know about pricing. Nothing but it's better than smoking. Right so i said no. Not if you're drinking disgusting green water with no active ingredients. Just wasting your expensive medicine. Yeah that's true too. So i had to go completely to the basis so that means isolate my own standards because i couldn't order them. Quantify my own standards purifying one thing chromatography. The second thing is to quantify them and you cannot easily do that by weighing because they're sticky and syrupy so i had to develop an methods to quantify it with an internal standard. There was not a cannabinoid that we had our cannabinoid than i had to learn. How do they behave. What what kind of spectroscopic and chromatographic behavior do they have. So i had to summarize that. And then i had to move on to. What's actually different between the varieties that we're growing here in holland. Are they really that different or should be more different. Cbd wasn't even the question back then that came even later but then you move onto administration forms. How do you make optimal cannabis t in a reproducible. Way where it's not suddenly way too strong when you forget about the boiling water for five minutes because the phone rings. What if in those five minutes your tickets and times stronger than there's all kinds of patients around holland are suddenly fainting and falling off the stairs because they're super high right so and we knew none of those things vaporisers. What's a good vaporizer. What's not so good vaporize and how what you know no standards for anything. No quality checks for anything. If you could make a vaporizer bring it to the market. You just sold it right. It's not really that much difference now. But then those things renew and then we had no idea what kind of toxins or or crap. They were spitting out to candidates so my question was always. Keep it simple Stick to the things that real people need to know now. No no large studies just for your signs buddies but focus on what patients need to know today and try to set up the study and also writes the results down in in an article in situation. Everybody can understand including the patient. You're doing it for so i. I called a national geographic style. You can't you can't watered down to science so much that it's not actually true anymore. It just sounds easy at nice but it's not actually true because then you're misleading people and i think you know if you get data from people you have to give it back to them so I i was interacting with users and prescribers and patient organizations. Like what are you dealing with. What is your life. Look like once you get that jar with cannabis and you go home then what you know. Where do you get stuck. What do you want to know. And that's been a very fruitful approach to my To my phd thesis. Because then not only a bunch of scientists around the world but basically everybody in my sphere of influence from from physicians to to patients to politicians to to family members. They wanted to know out his his work. Because i can actually read this teases and know what it means so with that i reached my goal of not just as a molecular biology. Just doing very fun stuff in the lab but also have one leg in in the real world and be

And i both would love to do that as our A retire retiring area. I don't know what i'm trying to say. But you get the picture. So so you're here to talk about cannabis what it feels like to be high. And obviously you have a very special relationship with Cannabis specifically the cd side of things Can you give us give us some history. While i'm when was the first time you tried cannabis You know wha what's what's your history like there. Yeah that's a good one. My history pretty extensive. I started smoking cannabis when i was sixteen and and on probably while until now i smoke pretty consistently now But through my twenties it was off my late teens. it was off. I was in the army. So i didn't. I didn't smoke at all. Actually when i got out and smoke for a while. But then i moved to alaska. And i got in with bluegrass crowd and started doing joy relaxing music and art and creativity. And so i really started to smoke a little bit more than but it was mixed with alcohol and so it was always strange A lot of times it was strange for me then. So i quit then after moving to hawaii Oddly enough living in hawaii i didn't smoke at all was too expensive. It was too difficult to get and it just actually wasn't conducive to the to. The work i was doing i was i was diving. I was underwater a lot. And i honestly didn't feel like i needed to be high. I was so much going on in my environment So it was really nice but then you know fast forward to now and fifty one. I've had medical conditions now. Chronic medical conditions that only cannabis actually works for me and allows me to function. The pharmaceutical solutions arm suitable treatments. They create actually more confusion in issues than thc cannabis use see quite heavily us around three hundred milligrams a day. Cbd right around there. I use a lousy and it feels good and it works. Good for me. That's my history in a nutshell. Yeah that's awesome. I feel like. I have so many things to respond to. And of course the as i described to you at the beginning of this and then you know. The listeners may not fully understand the logistics of doing these remote interviews are difficult and so i tried to not interrupt my guests because it just makes the communication really difficult when we have like a one to two second delay. So i i you know you've you you're living in oregon. You lived in alaska. You lived in hawaii. These are these amazing places. And i love that you said that in in hawaii you didn't even really feel like you needed it I was lucky enough to be in hawaii for a short amount of time. It was like two weeks back in the early two thousands. But i mean i. I know exactly what you're saying it. It's this absolutely gorgeous place. And i mean i can't even imagine what it would what it was like to be diving there and and doing all that fun stuff and i think. Hawaii is pretty known for cannabis isn't it. Oh definitely definitely. But i was. On and kuwaiti is a notorious family island. It's it's oriented for families and as far as tourism goes Maui famous for cannabis and big island is more famous for cannabis and even a walking Quite has some but it's so small that it's really More treats for locals that are shared. And when i got there but after the first six months and i was there for five years. I didn't really smoke anymore at all. I didn't actually yeah. It was just so beautiful relaxing.
Where Does Bitcoin Fit in the Global Reserve Currency Game?
"This is going to shake out how disruption manifest in real life is really hard to predict. But at this point, we do at least know what appear to be different paths that this thing could take if some sort of cryptographic. DIGITAL MONEY OUR future. So Andreas I'd like to throw this one to you to start us off. You've got privately issued. You know literally anybody can do it crypto currencies. You've got so-called corporal coins like the Libra, you've got national digital currencies like we see coming out of China, and then you've got things like bitcoin. So like what are kind of the attributes of these different things? What are the strengths and the weaknesses of each approach or perhaps I'll ask it a different way. What could actually work and what do we know won't Well I'd like to just take a brief that back and say you know even though the US has abused his position, the dollar, and even though there are a lot of contenders for the kind of multipronged geopolitical power structure that doesn't mean the US dollar is anywhere near losing his position as reserve currency in it may lose some of his control but the problem is that there is no good alternative in traditional currencies, not the not the. Ruble the politics. There are two fraud together. One likely contender is not a crypto currency or digital currency at all but is some form of synthetic currency built and managed by the International Monetary Fund's so some kind of SDR based synthetic basket currency that is constructed, which may or may not have a blockchain is kind of unnecessary. It would be a centralized currency that emerges to replace the dollar. But again, you know the IMF isn't an independent organization. Ezer and the problem is there's a vacuum right now in terms of something to replace the US dollar and so we might end up with a brief period where in fact, there are a number of competing monetary and payment systems because it's not just the reserve currency social, the payment system, the US dollar as reserve currency goes hand in hand with swift as the international wire transfer settlements and payment system and control of both gives the US. Enormous geopolitical power now, Europe and China have tried to build alternative versions of swift. So they can bypass controls. The US imposes unilaterally a great example of that would be the embargo on Iran, which Europe, and many other countries under the previous agreements have essentially allowed Iran to sell oil, and yet the US continues to maintain an embargo on his backed out of its treaty obligations. So in that particular case, there's a need for an alternative payment system. The payment system going hand in hand with the reserve currency actually gives us a hint as to the importance of blockchain's in this base, and because of blockchain is simultaneously a payment system and currency and the consensus rules govern both. Now, whether a nation states could make a central digital currency CDC, it's called whether corporates currency could survive or whether it would be some former crypto currency that emerges to fill that vacuum I mean that's a really loaded question and I don't think any of us can answer right now I think what's going to happen is we're going to simply end up in a world where there's a lot more fragmentation. Will Continue to work for some things. The you on and Euro will work. For other things. We'll be libra other corporate currencies that will be central bank digital currencies like digital yuan or digital euro. They'll be her tow currencies and we're going to enter a period of massive fragmentation where things are going to be complicated, and there's going to be more limited liquidity more complications in trade and more exchanges happening across all of these different forms. At. The beginning of this episode, we talked very briefly about how one of the sort of use cases of global reserve currency is to store value in some form other than the one that your government has control over, and we've seen this sort of throughout history with different episodes of heavy inflation hyperinflation in some cases where the money that people think they've saved and have simply goes down in value and can buy less effectively at the end of it that I think is really important part of this conversation and I have increasingly been thinking that. Lacking an alternative lacking a system that actually has neutrality Bilton as a base level assumption you're looking around for what's the best option of all of these bad options right because again, like using the US government's money as your reserve currency when you're in Zimbabwe will, that's much better than using Zimbabwe's hyper inflating currency. But on the other hand, the US is integrate situation either it's essentially the cleanest dirty shirt one of the things that I've really been curious about. With regards to the Central Bank digital currencies. As you said, so called CBD's is whether or not these could behave like a truly neutral system or whether we're just talking about taking the existing very slanted system, which is in favor of whichever country has sort of, as it's called the exorbitant privilege of being able to just essentially right blank checks that you don't have any money to backup, which then people use as their own form of savings in their local country. Whether that changes the equation here whether having something like Bitcoin that although it's neutral and available for use by everyone can't be influenced as we used to say a lot more, you can't hold a gun to the head of math, right? Like there's some protection that's built into that neutrality and I just wonder if that's something that we could ever see or that any government would ever allow to happen in a nationally issued central
Attorney General Barr Announces Publication of Cryptocurrency Enforcement Framework - But Do They Have It Right?
"So today your core, you posted a link and you're like, Hey, hey, everyone apparently, the attorney general thinks that crypto users criminals. And that's not tied in stay that I to say that I was like, Hey, you said, what did I say? Let's go up to. Say. I didn't say much honest I just said I basically Gerald. William William. Bar announced his publication of cryptocurrency enforcement framework. So maybe the article that dropped this relatively important. At least I thought it was. Open it up here. How many? Pages, CAV. Suggest to. Eighty something, right. Eighty three pages of the US Department of Justice. Framework on digital currency enforcement and. Too Long didn't read from what I can tell nothing too crazy except that they don't understand any of the legitimate use cases, crypto currency, and that's about fifteen pages of illegal uses of cryptocurrencies. You can see the Linda they're coming from. So it. All boils down What you said many times in the last few months that is government is not going to be comfortable giving up control of the current the power. Right that's all it boils. That's that's the theme here. Is that hey y'all crypto usages cute. And all, but we still are more powerful than you could ever imagine. I don't see. That way that may be true but at least in the context of this particular release. it's the Department of Justice. They're going to view it through the framework of illegal use cases in the things they're trying to stop and protect people from. Or catch bad people from doing stuff at when they look at cryptocurrency through that Lens enables a lot of. People who would like to do bad stuff to do it a little easier potentially. That's only Lindsey care about let's that. They're trying to like look at it having enforcement framework for. Like how does this enable the people we're already looking at and tracking and tip to stop to do the things that they're already tried to do. Not. Like don't expect. Quality. Like. To come from this. This is only going to be like. How do we stop it or how do we watch it? How do we? How do we survey? Harry punish people for doing the things that we're trying to stop the. Do they incorporate this into the has has like people sending money overseas. Like Tie ed to. Them harboring money or like putting money off shore for tax evasion purposes things like that, right? Proof could we put towards a specific type of cryptocurrency use case in the context tax evasion? Do. You think that the US DC an like these different. What are the combs CBD central digital currencies are just like vaccines for the financial systems of the of the of yesteryear? Are they just a way for them to basically you know? Put a virus in the CRYPTO system in see all the Times that crypto touches their digital currency. Just. A portal is the gateway this. He's from my perspective. This is a hard it's. What I like. So she says. Terrible. Terrible case worst case scenario is like, Hey. We got a handle on things things that had watched stuff key people for doing things, and now have a lot of controls on. Money floor or whatever like this comes out it's so dreadfully increases the access at ease in which people can sit value. Across the Now, we've got to do our jobs again. All.

So I like a lot of people who find themselves in the healing world had to really kill myself and figure out my own stuff I, and that's really what led me into the path. And My background is actually in music and electric music production performance, and in my early twenties I was touring musician and Meyde lifestyle and all the stressors not taking care of my body really just 'cause my health to crash and I started having these weird symptoms I was passing out randomly, which was not fun like wake up and realizing that I was just unconscious for a little bit. I saw a number of the mainstream doctors and they're basically like well, you're like a healthy young guy in his twenties like you're not. GonNa. Die of a heart attack. We can tell you that you're not gonNa you know. You don't have diabetes. We can tell you that right and beyond that there wasn't a lot of actual useful actionable information, and so it really forced me to do my own research and figure out what's going on. I've been listening to this podcast with the Guy Dr Dan Stickler, who is a world renowned expert in genetics and epigenetics sand I listening to all of his podcast episodes that he had out. And there wasn't anyone really talking about this stuff in this angle and I took a walk on my lunch break one day at work and realize the logo of this podcast that I've been listening to was literally on the building next door. Like one hundred yards from whereas working and the doctor had an office next door to me that I didn't know about. So wild. And so I immediately booked a time I wanNA blood work done with them. I wanted to work with them and it turned out they're actually looking to hire someone with an audio background to help them develop meditation programs and stress relief programs for this experimental sound chamber. They've built in this clinic and I turned out I had the perfect background you know immediately want to. Start working with them and right around the same time. This Guy Dr Dance declare who's he's a consultant to Google lectures at Stanford. He started a training program for teaching genetics teaching epigenetics and I haven't the replaced at the right time basically, and he was like, Hey, you should you know be a Beta tester refer this program like you kind of have a basis for it. Me Can pass his knowledge on to you actually said no at first I was still in the I`Ma musician. Kind of mindset and sure enough I actually ended up being the first coach that he trained. He's trained about three or four hundred worldwide now, and so that's really kind of what launched me into what I'm doing now, and since then I've gone on to develop a genetic test for economic function like you mentioned with Dr. Stickler and so it's really been a battle one eighty Cana journey for me in terms of going from someone who? Really needed help to kind of being on the other

"To two hundred thirty two dollars in it depends on how many milligrams usually my products are about thirteen cents per milligram. So when you look at a product and you say oh look. Here's a topical sobbed. That's only fifty dollars. Well the one I'm thinking about is is a very big name brand and there are one hundred milligrams of CBD in there okay. Well my topical Saab is one hundred twenty eight. I have a thousand milligrams. So that's why I teach people to look at the cost per milligram of CBD when they're comparing prices cadets really important looking at the cost per milligram and you know as you just said I mean one of the things that you do with your clients and your customers. Is You help them figure out? What is that starting point? Do we go up. We go down. Can you give us though just sort of a general? Ah General idea of where a starting milligram dosage might be. For something like night-time anxiety or sleeplessness is that is that a fair question. It is a fair question though. It does depend on the product. The when you take a soft gel you lose some of the potency because it has to travel through your system right so you might have to take twenty milligrams of Soft Gel whereas you could take five or six milligrams of the water soluble or ten milligrams of the tincture under your tongue. Gotcha so it but so some people find relief with just three to five milligrams of CBD and some people need fifty. Some people need seventy five. I don't have anyone using really more than that above that. Now you're talking about really severe issues in some research studies they used two or three hundred milligrams of CD. But I don't see that with my clients okay. And you mentioned you know finding relief a lot of people think of okay. I have a headache. I'M GONNA take an IB profane and in thirty minutes to an hour. My headache is going to be gone. Talk through what people might be able to expect. In terms of symptom relief of things like anxiety and sleeplessness. And some of the things that you've mentioned are we talking an instantaneous. Relief of symptoms or an ease of symptoms or is this something that gradually builds up over time it depends some people can take C B D. Nc Very fast relief for example for pain. If you take the water soluble picture. You might relief in five minutes. If you use a topical put it on your knee you might find relief in five to ten minutes. If you're taking it for anxiety you might find really quick relief but I tell people it will probably take two weeks or even up to three weeks to really see the effect of that. Because you have to saturate your receptors we have receptors in our body from head to Toe. We have cannabinoid receptors in CD's Of annoyed so it affects these receptors. At it increases the serotonin. In your blood because works on though serotonin receptors so it really takes a couple of weeks to to really find that balance. That homeo- stasis that we're looking for a while and I wanted to draw out and underscore. Sometimes I hear I've heard Janus optel listeners. Ever Janus talk about CBD Multiple Times. And I always learn something new and I love listening to her. Talk about it. Because she's so super knowledgeable but one of the things that stuck out to me in our very first conversation that we ever had about. Cd Cannabis in him with what she just said about saturating our own internal receptors. I think that's really important for people to hear that we have this. It's an Indo adenoid. System within our bodies right Janice that when people tend to think of cannabis in the halo of cannabis. Cbd is some sort of external product which it is that you are putting in as a foreign product into your in your body. It's always amazed me that here we sit in twenty twenty and I as someone who's been in the sort of medical profession on the fringes for years and I never knew that we have our own internal Indo can avoid system that is meant to have these receptors to be activated this. It's just shocking to me when you think about how our knowledge has evolved. Yes I find it mind blowing because I was never trained in this. You were never trained in this. It was only discovered in the nineteen nineties so in all fairness I trained just a little before the nineties earlier. However now that we know about this why are medical schools teaching this only fifteen percent of them are teaching about the? Endo cannabinoid system which I find incredibly amazing and part of that is because of the federal status of Cannabis. It is still illegal at the federal level. Even though thirty four states have made medical cannabis legal thirteen or fourteen states have made adult use cannabis use legal. It doesn't matter federally. It's illegal so a lot of things. I think a lot of medical schools. If they're federally funded are little bit afraid to be talking about this. Which is really doing a disservice to all of us absolutely not just the medical professionals but certainly us as as patients and the community out there that is going to need this as an alternative form of treatment or not even necessarily alternative as a mainstream form of now. I do want to clarify one thing. So when you talk about the federal legality or illegality of cannabis that's different though than the federal legality of CBD as compound. Is that correct? That is correct. In that I think that's where it gets really confusing to people who are especially in states. Where even maybe medical marijuana is not legal or the only thing. That's legal is medical marijuana. But they're seeing squad unquote. Cbd shops or like. I've heard you say they're seeing. Cbd At bed bath and beyond his honk through the legalities of bat for US okay. The twenty eighteen Farmville made the production the growth the growing in production of hemp legal. So that didn't automatically make. Cbd legal if if someone is extracting CD from the cannabis plant. It is not legal So you need to have. Cbd extracted from the Hemp Plant. Gotcha and it should say on the label. It should say hemp extract hemp derived. Cd in which case it is legal. There are a couple of states that have been a bit slower to come around to the fact that it's legal like South Dakota and I think Ohio for a while. There was someone there who a- legislators said. Well wait a minute. We haven't said that it's legal but for all intents and purposes. Cbd FROM HEMP is legal in the US and also when you talk about traveling with it..

You can also access the same page by not activating the Qr code from the website directly and just punch the lot code. At the reason we do this is because there are so many any bad actors out there that one either do not have the CBD quantity did they say they might even have chemicals in there that could otherwise be harmful or toxic. They could have all sorts of challenges and problems with the product. And you wouldn't know and so I understand why a little healthy skepticism is. What consumers have because they're they're just not sure but a company like us were of an FDA registered company? We only manufacturer an FDA registered facilities. We abide by the rules and regulations relations that are required and we even go steps beyond what are absolutely required and that we do the proper type of safety testing to make sure that what we're providing isn't toxic fast. A full toxicological review is going to be published in early January this year about the raw material using our products. It's because we're going a far beyond what is required so that we can show safety to the consumer is our utmost concern. Well that's cool. I mean anybody who's been listening or been interested interested in it. You're definitely giving them opportunities to do some homework. And get on the website and trying to get down to the bottom of if you are curious about it. My personal favorite of your products is twist the citrus that product. So I mean I. It's it's refreshing. It's really good. I the my question about that is when the the the products a lot of the products. Just say like CBD extract received the oil hemp oil. How do I mean what? What are the differences is in the products? Like why would I do twist instead of say one of the smaller green bottles that Jesse. CBD Oil what. What are the differences? Okay okay so first of all the primary way that someone takes a dietary supplement is usually in the form of a capsule right a capsule. It's easy you don't have to taste it. There's nothing there it's really simple and convenient. It travels well into capsules a really simple so we have capsules. That's one way to take our products and we have our products that contain CBD with other constituents constituents in their in their different milligrams strengths so we have a five ten and a twenty milligram strength just in our standard capsules. Then we have our what we call structure structure function or condition specific Formulated issues. Like we have our sleep formula where I will tell you the name him fusion means we take him and we fuse it together.

They're basically two reasons for it. The first is the whole legalization movement of cannabis so that's been happening for twenty years is and more consumers are aware of it more consumers are in favor of it a majority of Americans have access to some foreign cannabis in the state that they live Tardif Republicans are in favor of legalization truly is an issue that unites us and the second piece is the passage of the two thousand eighteen Farmville so it made these products available at the same time that people were curious about them and that opened up the floodgate you sent me some samples but wow your products are expensive your gumdrops costs fifty dollars a pack your oils cost up to one hundred bucks could chain rob CB is expensive ingredient if you look at all of the CBD products that are out there ours are actually comparably priced there's a couple things that consumers should be mask but you only get a very tiny amount of CBD from that plant and Supply and demand it is and we don't have enough supply of hemp right now to provide stitcher components of the plant isolate is a more refined former CD that's cheaper and not as effect why some CBD products are priced higher meanwhile rob has been really open about his depression and talking about what's helped him deal with it can I ask you a personal question for of course how often do you use. CBD WHICH STANDS or cannabis derived from the marijuana plant but unlike thc that's tetrahydrocannabinol another chemical found in marijuana eh it will not get you high so my next question why is suddenly everywhere and perhaps most importantly does it really work doc a lot of celebrities these days are jumping on the bandwagon Preston you are so sweet to do this I'm sorry I know it's been such bear to schedule but thank you so much only got a courtroom so happy that's actress Kristen Bell who's talked a lot about using CBD for her anxiety so why does she turn lead and what is it doing for her Preston when did you start using CB I guess I started about two and a half years ago and what prompted you to start it you know I had been hearing about it or a while and it was originally recommended me because my friend who were going on like red carpet and wearing high heeled for a long time they had the bomb with CD that they were rubbing on their ankles to save their feet and I looked into this company that made the bombers called Lord Jones I noticed that they had a picture and I noticed that a lot of people online had been saying that it helped living Zaidi because generally the calming effect and I am very anxious person you noticed a real change how did it make you feel and did it take a while for us to notice the effects it was like nothing I had ever tried okay so I did not notice it immediately but what I noticed about the first week or so when I drive home from work because I raised two little girls I am on my way home from work going through okay I need to remember to buy a new lunch pail because that one got stinkier I need to remember to replace the apple 'cause they'll have no apples for their lunches like all these silly little things like you know the dentist appointment and I'm just going through the mental frantic list on my way home to get back into mom mode and about after the first week I noticed with just enjoying the radio and I wasn't finding myself any less efficient at home the dentist appointment was still being made the lunch pail is still ask you who bought the apples a would still me it wasn't believe Dina at all it was simply a a slightly calmer version of me that didn't need to worry frantically in order to complete attack did I noticed the effects right away no because there's nothing that you can feel but what I did notice is I wasn't having fouts these sort of targeted Vang's -iety when I was alone like in my car and that's when it hit me I was like Oh this is working for me do you ever wonder kristen that it might be a placebo effect I do think about that a lot accurate because I I feel like I would be candidate for CBO to be honest but I have tried a lot of things I mean I've tried and I like the being adapted in sometimes for my anxiety I've tried like every little supplement or vitamin that comes on the market and I haven't noticed as much of a worry free kristen as I do with cbd you know I know Kristen also been open about the fact that right to smoke pot occasionally is there difference in terms of the results L. A. Gillian degree of difference like this taking cbd you have your fully functioning you can drive your car you can make a science project with your child you can you know take the l you can do whatever there is nothing that messes with your brain you feel completely and utterly like yourself you're breathing a little easier and with t not when you take something that has pd NCB when you use a vague or take a gummy or you know smoke joint or something that has an effect on your mind and that world is totally different now from the BBC World and I to be honest like both but clearly raising two children I'm not smoking pot every day you know what I mean and before we go I just wanted to ask you why do you think this is such a hot trend writing now why do you think that everywhere you look at least for me you've just see cbd a couple things I think that the who a lot of people speaking highly of it and seeing results I don't think something that's a snake oil gets this much heat around it also think we are in a state as humans where there is a lot of depression and anxiety going around people are going really fast we have our phone and we've been going at such a fast pace of human beings we are requiring things that calm us and for people that don't want to drink or do drugs this much like mindfulness is very easy simple effective for me solution to I think just during the day it worked for Kristen Bell but that doesn't necessarily mean it works for everyone I decided to try some CB the products myself and I got a boatload of them to prepare for this episode even got my husband John Moulder involved and made him try a CD cream for his aching feet I did my left foot because my left foot typically bothers me more than my right foot and so I just put some of that. CBD Cream on my left foot and it felt pretty good this morning didn't AAC really and it sometimes in the morning yeah try it again I would try it again now I've been walking around for hours and it's a little it's a little lazy but it felt pretty good this morning and because it was morning I decided to fix myself a Friday did you know they even have CD olive oil I also tried some CD drops I this thanks sure peppermint and it says hi CD place one full dropper under the tongue hold for sixty seconds and then swallow got a folder for fall under my count I have to be honest I didn't really notice a big difference having said that I'm not sure I used it. early enough for it to have an effect but clearly it is helping a lot of people and I wanted to understand why we're gonNA take a quick break here be back in a minute support for today's show comes from a company that's very close to my heart and I mean that literally I'm wearing a third loved aw right now tmi the minimize are actually third love was started by my friend Heidi Zach after she decided she had had enough of Bras that didn't fit L. and was tired of marketing that made us women feel like we just weren't good enough and third love Heidi set out to create a better bra a better shopping experience dance and a brand women could believe in I also believe so deeply in the power of brands like third love who celebrate the beauty of women just as we are you're in all shapes and sizes and that's why I chose to invest in this company now it's your turn to try third love has over seventy eight sizes so they're true Lee is abroad for every woman just go to third love dot com slash next now to find your perfect fitting Bra and get fifteen percent off your first purchase yes that's third love dot com slash next for fifteen percent off today to weed out CBD fact from fiction get it we'd out I reached out to the Go-to woman for all things. CBD Doctor Yasmin Heard He's the Director of the addiction institute at Mount Sinai and a professor of Psychiatry Neuro Science and Pharmacological Sciences I asked her to explain in Layman's terms L.. CBD Understanding how CBD works is also challenging for scientists many people are trying to figure out how it works we we do know that it is a molecule that's cannabinoid that's found in the cannabis hemp plants and it binds to receptors in our are body and brain that are regulating different transmitter systems and what I mean by that is that it will Anuj the activity of cells in different parts of the brain so t.j sees a psychoactive component of cannabis plant that's why people get the high the intoxication that binds to the canal annoyed receptors in our brain and our body CBD actually doesn't bind to those receptors that caused the intoxication but what it does is that it tweaks different neurotransmitter systems so it will turn up one transmitter system and turn down another so that it stays in homies stasis in away so neurotransmitters are responsible for things like pain or society or depression exactly and CBD will altered those transmitter systems that are involved in many different and functions as you said pain mood anxiety so it has a broad mechanism of action and that's one of the things that's been fascinating frustrating for the scientists and that's why we all can't figure it out completely CBD has been shown to be really effective in a in a couple of very important areas this what are those one of the disorders absolutely that is clear from clinical trials is childhood epilepsy seizure disorders Oh these seizure disorders such as Dr as CDs now an FDA approved medication for them so that has I think significantly move the field in believing that CD has medicinal properties what about opioid addiction. I know there's exciting research that you've done about that we have conducted small medical studies that have shown that CD decreased craving and people who have an opiate use disorder a decrease during cited related to their craving as well which are two key features for why people relapse so we're now going to start large clinical trial and we'll see whether or not it replicates but a lot of the work work not only from our group but from others have now started to show that CBD does have potential to decrease craving an opioid users so those two very very exciting areas and that should counter this notion that it's just snake oil right absolutely CBD is not snakes oil there people trying to make snake on in promising that Kim changes every single thing in our society mm-hmm clearly it seems CD holds a lot of promise for a variety of conditions and that's not lost on people who are hoping to cash in and no one under the market is projected to reach twenty billion with the B by Twenty twenty four so what is your concern about this growing industry and the fact that it's being sold in so many different forms for so many different problems the fact that you can buy CBD on your stake in your coffee and water even Mascara their CBD Mascara their CD Mascara and sadly there's also CBD Tampons the problem is All of this lends itself to many people thinking. CBD is a stink oil because how can one thing helped with all of these sprint syndromes disorders even recreational clinical benefits it can't it's a fad like anything else so that many people are just trying to make money without ever having to prove that they're CBD Mascara works they don't have.

"Safe and doesn't compromise your sleep. Unlike THC would be a good thing to probably two caveats or at least one caveat. It does seem to be somewhat dose dependent it. I don't think it's very clear right now what the optimal doses. There have been some times where people actually suggested that the use of CBD at a certain dose is actually wake promoting rather than sleep promoting. So I think. The may actually be this U-shaped function when it comes to see be that what all some kind of a function. I don't know what the functions going to be. But there's going to be perhaps a sweet spot of a dose concentration that is optimal physi- bts benefit on sleep. And then may be other doses that are actually detrimental to sleep. I mean need to stay away from them. How is CBD doing that? And having that kind of benefit of sleep. There was actually even some evidence that it may actually increase the amount of deep sleep, which was interesting, and that was just one single city small city again, I'm not believing and I'm not going to go out there and start telling people to to take CD on the basis of that single city. I am saying that I think it's promise right now. But we don't know how could it be doing that? Well, one of the interesting things could actually be themm regulation in some of those these they were actually finding that the cool buddy temperature decreased. With CBD administration. And we would just describing that when you drop co body temperature you sleep better when you increase co body temperature by way of something fem genyk like alcohol, or it's just a hot room or a big meal that increase copay temperatures was asleep. So CBD match be having its mechanistic benefit through the Thermo. Regulatory system is one of my hypotheses the other is that it's indirect through its anxiety Olympic benefits. I think probably the greatest strongest evidence, right? The out there right now for CBD's clinical efficacy is foreign Zayed's. And I actually think tried to read is much of that data's. I can't I think it's actually pretty interesting. I think one of the major causes of insufficient. Sleep and porcelain bright now is that everyone is just cranked in terms of anxiety. And that they wake up, you know, we all constantly own reception in this modern day of life. And the only time that all brain goes from reception to reflection is went ahead hits the pillow. And that's the last time that you need to be ruminating and catastrophes ING and having that Rolodex of anxiety. So I think if CBD is efficacious for lowering eighty an anxiety is one of the causes of poor sleep in society than pot of that benefit may not be through a die wrecked. Mechanism on sleep regulating centers. But instead a secondary benefit of lowering exile, which paps low as sympathetic fight or flight branch of the nervous system, which means that you shift into a more Paris Petix state, and or it drops core body temperature both of those routes..

"You can find ice-cream CBD cocktails are becoming like a really popular thing. There were reports that Coca Cola is working on CD infused beverage of some sort. So it's definitely a huge huge market hugely successful product, the one that I tried for the story is a CD lot which cost about nine dollars. And what was the selling point of like nine dollars lots? Well, they can't really talk about it. Which is really interesting when I talked to people who sell CBD, they are not really allowed by FDA rules to talk about what it can do because it hasn't been inspected to see if it actually does that stuff. So they just kind of talk about wellness or like some kind of holistic improvement that you might feel. Why don't we talk about you and me right now? Sure. First. Let's clarify what CBD is it gets confused with marijuana? But it's not so CD is short for dial. It's a canal, which is a chemical compound in the cannabis plants. There's over a hundred we're not exactly sure how many the two most important ones economically at least our THC, which is the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana and CBD which is found in marijuana. But also in industrial hemp, which has not in it, Dan, Nassir woods wrote about CBD for the goods advocates. And I asked him to help me figure out how it got to be everywhere from dog treats to lot as to massages. And it turns out, it's super complicated. What I've always been told about CBD is that it gives you this kind of body high without any of that complicated. Psychoactive head stuff kind of like the endorphin rush to get after. Long run or good workout. And even that turns out only half. Right. It's not psychoactive at all. So there would be no high of any sort nobody high nothing. You would you wouldn't feel anything. So to be clear here CBD is not meant to get you high. That's correct. Yeah. At all. Yeah. But it is meant to provide you some sort of relief. Theoretically, the uses of it are at least the ones that are known are anti anxiety and anti inflammatory, those are the most important ones. But it also does seem to have some really beneficial effects for certain medical conditions. It was actually approved by the FDA for drug called pity -alex, which is a epilepsy treatment. And there's a lot of research going on for CBD to treat schizophrenia and people who are doing this kind of work are really excited about it. Because it doesn't seem to have very many side effects and most of the treatments that you would get four something like schizophrenia have really. Really nasty side effects. So researchers definitely excited about it's it's kind of an interesting promising new thing..

"CBD can help with all kinds of things from pain to depression and anxiety and even clearing up acne. And it seems kind of crazy that CBD could do all these things, but the industry and CBD fans say that they have science on their side. Dr. Josh they say that these extract can do all the stuff because of a complicated system in the human body that interacts with CB day, and it's called the Endo canal annoyed system cannabinoid system. The Endo can have annoyed system is thought to play a role in a bunch of things like regulating our immune system and even influencing our motions. And it does this through a network of Recep decides that found through. How brain body now? CBD advocates say that the chemical has this amazing ability to into these receptive sites. Like a key into a lock like when of Paltrow to of China. We have receptors in our physiology for CBD, this is a really big deal that we have these receptors in our body that directly bind the plant. They say that by interacting with this complex system. CBD can make you feel bad out, reduce your anxiety and dampened down inflammation and speaking to the Stanley brothers. They told us that CBD binds to these receptors he's Joe so there's much more to understand what we do know is that let's say CBD for the CB two receptor site does fit like locking key all over the internet. You hear these basic idea, and it really adds scientific legitimacy to using CBD for all sorts of things. The only problem is this story, the lock and the key. Day. It doesn't seem to be true. Yes. Scientists at this all sorts of ways, and they're like dude CBD is not binding to those receptors in the Endo cannabinoid system as researches put it in a review papa- beside DEA, quote has now been largely dismissed and quite the truth is we don't know. What's CB day is doing we talked about this with Ken Hutchison? A professor and you're a scientist at the university of Colorado. So we don't even know the mechanism yet in terms of how CD works in the brain. Right. I mean, there's some maybe some hints Miller in animals, but even that is is pretty spun. That is kind of crazy. We we don't we really don't even like how how it would be possible as totally crazy. So it doesn't look like CB is latching onto these receptors. It could be affecting the Endo can have annoyed system in some other way. Maybe not. It's one of the many possibilities. There's just a lot science hasn't figured out yet. And while many scientists, including can't do think that CBD is doing something and shows promise largely because it's helping kids like Charlotte the research is so new that other than epilepsy..

"The Stanley brothers ended up naming this CV off the little Charlotte. Instead of disappointment may cold, it Charlotte's web. And this is where things really started taking off CB day and the Stanley brothers wants the epilepsy. Community got would of what CBD could do for Charlotte, desperate families with no other medical options wanted to get some before Charlotte story went viral the Stanley brothers only had a supply for about fifty people soon. They had a waiting list of fifteen thousand we would have people who would find out where we lived where I personally lived in knock on the door to explain to me why their child needed to be moved up on the waiting list, and why they were worse than than another os impossible to keep up with any of it. It was so heavy since shallots story. Scientists have run several clinical trials testing if CBD can help with some kinds of epilepsy, and he can not in all kids. But it has a big enough affect that the FDA approved a CBD base drug VCR. And it just hit the shelves. And while the epilepsy community was getting very excited about CB day. The internet also got a hold of it. They were tales around the web of this. Great new chemical that didn't just cure epilepsy. But also aches and pains demand. But the stuff was skyrocketing. And the Stanley brothers foster became one of the biggest CBD supplies in America. I mean, there are millions of consumers now, right? Some portion of those are are are reporting experiencing amazing results for one reason or another and people are buying it for all sorts of things like anxiety. That's the number one reason we see people buying no, then number two people are saying sleep. And then also some people are using that have cancer some people using that have Parkinson's Alzheimer's, rheumatoid arthritis lupus too long when it's Paltrow's groups started spiking cocktails with CBD and Joe Rogan was using CBD lotion he's injuries. And these claims of really snowballed just last year some websites where even suggesting that CBD could treat cancer the Stanley brothers got in trouble with the FDA linked to a website like this. Then more careful now, but still Josh is Kane on the powers of CB day. He wants to see people taking it every day like a vitamin. We'd like to see this in everyone's medicine cabinet as a as a therapeutic nutritional therapeutic. Okay. So CBD arrived on the scene as almost a miracle cure for some types of epilepsy. And now it's exploded into this phenomenon where people using it to treat just about anything. So after the break, what can science tell us about this chemical? We'll see be live up to the hype. That's coming up..

"In stores and on the internet CBD's legal status is murky even though it doesn't get anyone stoned the US Drug Enforcement Administration. That's the DA classifies it as a schedule one controlled substance just like cannabis, according to DA spokesperson, Catherine Pfaff the. Agency doesn't distinguish between CBD extracted from a high THC cannabis plant of the sort grown to produce marijuana and CBD that comes from hemp a form of cannabis the contains only tiny amount of THC, the CD that's available in health food stores is of the hemp variety in April. The DA's position on CBD that it should be a schedule one substance because it is extracted from cannabis was upheld by a federal appeals court. But the judges also noted that farm legislation passed by congress in two thousand fourteen which allows states to experiment with hemp production could give CBD marketers illegal out, providing they can verify that CBD was produced from hemp grown in states that have legal hemp programs and in September, the DA did announce that exception for pedia pediatrics the FDA approved seizure medication containing CBD, which it classified as schedule five the category for medications with a low potential for abuse. That says that the DA would do the same thing for other CBD drugs that. Come up through the FDA pipeline that didn't change CBD's overall classification though, although CBD technically remains a controlled substance. The DA is not going out of its way to enforce that prohibition. And it's not targeting CBD users Pfaff explained, quote were more focused on major drug traffickers and the opioid crisis. That leaves CBD up to individual states whose laws vary. According to Justin struggle, political director and federal lobbyists for the national organization for the reformation of marijuana laws. CBD is definitely in the clear in the nine states. Plus the district of Columbia that of legalized cannabis use for adults and in the thirty one states that have legalized medical cannabis CBD's legal. If a person has an authorization him from a physician to other states, Indiana, and Kansas have passed laws legalizing CBD from hemp, even though they don't allow medical or recreational. Kaplan says, but that doesn't necessarily mean that CBD is a panacea while there have been large. Well, designed studies on CBD as a treatment for different types of epilepsy. Much of the information about other possible uses comes from anecdotal reports case reports case series and small studies. That's according to Timothy wealthy a professor of pharmacy practice and chairman of the department of clinical sciences at Drake university and demo- in Iowa while sources like those small reports and studies can provide interesting information, they're also prone to placebo effects wealthy explained by Email. He said they are often not reproducible the situations. That are described are usually not welcome. Trolled to demonstrate the effect of CBD, and eliminate potential confounding factors for this reason, they are not considered as strong evidence for the efficiency of drug. Additionally, the limited scale of that CBD research makes it difficult to detect side effects drug, interactions and other potential problems because there are too few patients involved whilst he says, but many people out there aren't content to wait for more scientific studies or FDA approval of medications containing CBD instead, they're experimenting with CBD on their own to see if it works for whatever ails them, but CBD may not work for everything that people want to use it for though, some are using it as an insomnia remedy, for example, there is little evidence that CBD helps people whose sleeplessness isn't caused by impairing symptoms such as exiled or chronic pain. Kaplan says and unscientific self experimentation is also a concern to researchers such as Kaplan coup explains that different conditions might call for very different dosages of CBD. He said that the dose range can be quite narrow. So for example, in Brazilian study published in two thousand eighteen on CBD's effect in relieving anxiety associated public speaking. Researchers gave different doses of CBD to fifty seven male subjects. They found the dose of three hundred milligrams significantly reduced anxiety for subjects but those who took one hundred and fifty.

"There's even CBD toast and CBD facial masks and spas. But there's more CBD than hipster hype. Appeal lex a drug containing CBD was recently approved by the US food and Drug administration for treatment of seizures related to to rare forms of epilepsy and a growing number of studies suggest that it may be useful in treating other disorders as well. And remarkably that's all happening. Even though CBD remains technically illegal at the federal level with the exception of the epilepsy. Medication mentioned above how. However that prohibition at least for now is not being aggressively enforced and at the state level CBD's legality varies but underneath all of the hype. What is CBD oil anyway, Kennedy, all or CBD is a chemical compound that can be extracted from the cannabis plant. Unlike delta nine tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, which is the chemical ingredients that may lead a pot smoker to get the giggles or play interminable air guitar solos CBD does not get a user stoned THC and CBD have vastly different effects. According to cannabis researcher. Joshua Kaplan and assistant professor in the behavioral neuroscience program at western Washington University. Unlike THC, which gets its fact from acting upon certain cannabinoid receptors in the nervous system CBD has sixty five known targets in the brain and body. Kaplan says for example, CBD activates these same serotonin receptors that are acted upon by selective. Serotonin reuptake inhibitors or as as our eyes which are frequently prescribed. Class of antidepressant medications CBD does not interact with those receptors in exactly the same way. But the serotonin system does seem key in treating anxiety CBD's affect on multiple systems in the brain and body..
