Fresh update on "cavaliers" discussed on Joe Giglio

"I'm gonna have to disagree with you on the You know, take the guy off for team because we certainly we certainly saw LeBron James as as a kid. Take the Cleveland Cavaliers to an MBA title all by himself, and he played with a bunch of bombs. Okay, had Larry Hughes out there and I believe snow might have been on that team. He took a bunch of bombs to the finals. That's why I say the argument of Let's take a guy off is a poor one. I don't think it's the best argument to make LeBron James is a walking team by himself. You know, it's not necessarily let's pair him up with Anthony Davis. Let's pair him up with way as a youngster, he took a team. At around ya Honest his age. He took a team to the finals by him damn self and had to go through some bad boys to get it. Let's talk the mark from Maine. Mark you want CBS Sports Radio? What do you think? One Johannes winning M v P. Take care first off, and I love the show More so stoked to hear you on the radio girl. Thank you. Um, yeah, I gotta say I'm Sandy went on after Excellent boy, Daddy, because I gotta agree, man like it's the most valuable player. It's like the Heisman. It's the most valuable player for your team. And I get it. Look LeBron when he took those scrubs to the finals, he deserve anything absolutely 100%. I'm a big warriors hand. Those years when he was in Cleveland, it wasn't being the Warriors. Maybe he's still in V P. He you know I love Stef. Without Stephanie still be OK without without Jonah's boxes, just terrible. And so I You gotta look at that. There's a reason that hard and I'm not a big fan of little to fear of all for me. You know, without him. The Rockets are terrible, so he should have got more looks most years. Not this year. Obviously. It's in all sports. You have the exact same situation. Hyson is the worst offender of this right. All those USC winner is that you know the team's already atop fighting without those players way should create. Like the best player of the year award, like Player of the Year. I'm totally Adela that in that case, sure. LeBron have no arguments there. Yeah, but ya know what I mean? Look at the world's most Valuable player. Not best overall player. Most invaluable, Thank you More. Yes, there's a defect is no, There's a there's There's a difference. Thank you mark for calling up from Maine. There's a difference between being the best player and going ahead and one in the MVP, which has turned into a popularity contest. It's it's simple. The formula is simple. Best team in the league Best player he is your M V P Right. Is calling up from Houston. Sexist, right? Ur CBS Sports Radio. What do you thoughts? So I must call you to task first, because nowhere India equation doesn't main just because we have the best record. You the best team. If that were the case, they still be playing. That's ridiculous. They were not the best team. That's where they're Spectators like you and I What? Well, right if you go ahead and you look at the numbers win loss record best team best record if you want to split hairs. You can say that. Yes, but if you go ahead and look at the record, that's what it's drawn upon now. Go ahead with your next point. Well, once again, we disagree. Secondly, how money there's nothing right. Right. Right. There's nothing to disagree on. If you look at the winning percentage is if you look at the winds and the losses That's what people determined to say. OK, you have the best record in the league. You're the best team on paper doesn't always translate. No, it doesn't but go on ahead. I'm not buying that. You are a fine soldier asking questions in the last series. How many games Well, right, right. I don't want you to ask me a question. I'm asking you. What are your thoughts? Wagnon is winning MVP. Well, I'm going to appoint me as I'm asking you a question that I'm getting there because you also admitting that what I did well, right. All right. Hold on a second. This is what I do at the beginning of the show multiple times, and I restate my opinion multiple times. I opened it up and I give you 17 minutes on exactly what I think, And then I open things up to all the callers for them to make their point. Immediately If you can make your point and let me know what you think I can. I can have a conversation with you. Okay? It's that simple because you're not the only caller, so that's why I'm asking you. I understand. So, okay, so Maris Pond So So my question for you. I have a question because it was going to make my point for me and you my question What? We'll write respectfully. I want to talkto Well, it's too late. LeBron. It took us a long time to get there. LeBron James is your m V P. Let's see what Joe from Houston has to say. Joe. Hey, How's it going? How are you doing today? I'm great. Whose m V p Donovan vigil. Okay. Tell me. Why humor me. Okay, Donovan minutes. Mitchell is obviously the best player in the NBA. He's taking a trash. And as beaten So many teams. Okay, Now you take you take you on a soft, but they're they're They're playoff team. They're not a high playoff team. But their playoff team. You take LeBron off the Lakers, and they're still at playoff. Donovan Donovan Menschel best player in the league, right? Okay. Well, thank you, Joe for calling up from Houston. J.B. Bickerstaff on the NBA Strike and Racial Justice

"Us today is the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Also, the greatest interim head coach and the history of basketball. He is now three for three. With the Houston Rockets, the Memphis Grizzlies at now the Cleveland Cavaliers interim turned head coach J., B. Bickerstaff. Thanks for coming on with us. Man I appreciate it I guess that's an honor to say. Then the greatest coach of all time but I appreciate you having me man. Looking forward to the conversation so. What were you thinking last night as the Milwaukee, bucks don't take the floor and it becomes a reality that. There's not going to be a playoff game and then we see the way it plays out through the evening. We saw your tweets couple of them went viral by the way Jay bickerstaff on twitter. Now love that but you really some poignant words to say and so I just take me through your day and experiencing that somebody in the NBA. You know they did a good job of keeping their thoughts to themselves and it was really a surprise. You know normally something like that is GonNa get out you know but they did a great job of keeping it to themselves organizing it in making it a powerful statement You know I can't speak enough about the power of their voices and what it means to communities and people all over the world and all of our country for sure So you know it's a powerful statement and that's what people don't what some people don't want to give credit where credit is due Did, not know the outcome of what was going to happen. You. Know they didn't know what their sacrifice could possibly lead to as far as repercussions from the League or from TV ESPN fans whatever it may been, but they still had the courage to do it. And that says a lot. It says how important it is to and how important it should be to all of us. What do you think? How do you think you would have handled it because to hear it coaches were still getting ready for that game players really kind of did this on their own in the locker room and it's within an hour of game. and. So I'm sure you can attempt to relate to the coaches and kind of what was going on. If you put yourself in that position, how do you think would have played out because I can only match the stress of Getting Ready for a playoff game is is something already and then you walk in and your player said, we're not playing tonight. And I think the first thing is you show support this isn't something has popped out of the Blue I'm sure that there have been a ton of conversations with bud in his guys about the circumstances he's got some very powerful guys and you saw what George Hill Janas. Had to say how it's impacted them. In, affected down extremely difficult way. So I'm sure they've had some conversations. But in that moment you show support you know you ask questions. You help guide or whatever the plan may be but you're there as a resource, a tool because again, you're not getting in the way of. Two, powerful a moment. It means too much a this time in our society what's going on? So you're there as a resource a shoulder to lean on if they need it. It seems to me that minor standing from talking to players and coaches and exects. Slow last day is that it is clear that the bubbles as a success in terms of quality of play in terms of health and safety. But a lot of people fail that it's been a failure on the league's part in terms of capitalizing the fact that everybody's there twenty two teams started there now thirteen remaining and it's been a failure to creatively find ways to take advantage of this platform. I mean. To me yesterday that Jaylen Brown tweets out that he wants to leave to go protests and the feeling is that he should be able to make more of an impact being from the bubble and utilizing that platform and player seemed to be a frustrated with the fact that they can't creatively use that platform right now and it seems to me like everything that happened yesterday is just the players taking that into their own hands to accelerate this. And I think that's what the players do. Right I think when all these things happen and you know the players lead nothing best. What's the most fantastic part of this is you know we are looking for voices in our society to push us over No human being has more influence or larger platforms than are NBA players. So we expect them and we're depending on them to lead us. They're leading US where our so called leaders have failed us. They're trying to pull us all together and it's for the right reasons. You know what? I mean this isn't a selfish caused. This isn't a divisive 'cause of this is a cause for equality and humanity of everybody should be able to get on board with and we need their voices in their platform. And we'll follow suit.

What 'Arrival' Gets Right — and Wrong — About Linguistics

"Jessica con was a teenager when she first learned that linguistics is a thing. She stumbled upon story of Your Life, a science fiction novella by Ted Chiang. It's all about linguist- trying to figure out how to communicate with well aliens I. Think it was actually probably the first time I heard about the field of linguistics. And then I started college the year I saw an introduction to linguistics curson signed up for it. These days Jessica's field linguist at McGill University in particular I work on. Syntax. Basically the way words combine to make sentences in a few years ago. She got an email to be a consultant on a movie, a movie that was coincidentally based on the exact novella she read as a teenager. I'm not trying to draw any connections that aren't there, but you read about linguistics for the first time in a book that became a movie that you became the the person they consulted with. It's amazing right? It's pretty wild I mean when I first got the email that asks me to work on this film I was really ready to push spam because it sounded very strange and then at some point I saw the story of your life and I wait a minute I haven't thought about that in years and then I responded That Film Twenty Sixteen Sifi hit a rival. So real quick. In case you haven't seen it. Here's the gist. This is Davy arrived. All of a sudden twelve spaceships land all over earth trouble saying. And we don't know why they're not doing anything after landing there. Still no signs of first contact or just the sitting there are at least and so governments around the world are panicking trying to figure out why are these alien spaceship sitting here and different teams are going into try to understand why they're here what they want. And we are following one of these spaceships that I think is somewhere in Wyoming and the. Amy Adams who is a linguist? Production. And her job is to decipher the alien language and figuring out what they want. So today in the show another installment of the Shortwave Science Movie Club what the movie arrival got wrong about linguistics what it got. and. Whether or not Field Linguists Jessica coon has actually communicated with aliens. Honestly it's a tossup. I mattie Safai you're listening to shortwave NPR's Daily Science podcast. So Jessica you were the linguist who consulted on the movie arrival. So give me a big picture sense of what that means like. What did they actually have you do? Yeah. So the first thing I did was I got to read drafts of the screenplay which was really fun because it's a very common thing to do and academia we read things and we give feedback on them but usually not this fund of a scale committee meeting ever exactly yeah. It was very funds so I got to read the screenplay and they especially wanted. Feedback on how linguistics and linguists were represented in the film. So there were lots of places where I gave feedback and they incorporated it into the film. There were other places where they would say, okay just, Kinda yes. Yes. Thanks for your help but really in the end linguists are not Hollywood's primary audience and we're not going to get everything right here and now linguists just get to join like all the other fields of people who get really annoyed when science misrepresented onscreen. So welcome to the club. Sorry, we're not GONNA change that. The movie makers also put Jessica through some exercises, basically giving her a whiteboard and asking her would you do if aliens showed up and those exercises actually informed one of the most famous scenes in the movie when the main character we spanks played by Amy Adams. Schools the guy in charge of the mission about the fundamentals of linguistics. He asks her for a list of vocab words. Essentially, the keywords she was planning on teaching the aliens, that day. Cavaliers responding. Lock. help you understand. So Amy. Adams walks over to the whiteboard and scribbles what is your purpose on earth? This is where you want to get to. The question. Okay. So first, we need to make sure that they understand what a questions. The nature of A. Request for information along with the response then. We need to clarify the difference between a specific you. And a collective you because we don't want to know why Joe Alien is here we want to know why they all landed. In purpose requires an understanding of intent we need to find out. Do they make conscious choices or is their motivation? So instinctive that they don't understand a why question at all and and biggest of all, we need to have enough vocabulary with them that we understand their answer. I love that scene Yes that is one of the great triumphs of of linguistics in the film. I mean this was. So this was one of the most interesting parts of the movie for me because I'm you know this idea of building a base for understanding of a new language is like really interesting and and like the first steps in trying to communicate, which is you know like your thing right? So but it's something that I think we. Just, don't think about into see it in kind of in practice was so fascinating and I'm glad to hear it was like pretty well done your eyes question Mark Yeah I. Think I. Think it was really well done. I. Mean I think one thing that is really neat about this movie and what makes it such? You know interesting and intellectual Sifi is. They're not just typical humanoid creatures. We don't already have some kind of magical universal translator in place, and so we have to figure out how how do they even communicate and will we be able to communicate with them given how advanced they are that they've made these spaceships have arrived on earth I, think it's safe to assume that they have some advanced form of. Communication and that that form of communication should have patterns in it that we could eventually decipher. But thinking about you know, is it audible or is it written or could creatures communicate with smells or we just have no idea what could be out there if it's audible is in a sound frequency that human

"Sudden attack on our ability to argue freely has actually been creeping up on us the quad a while, hasn't it? It's not new. I mean I think. It may suddenly come to. The attention of the public and the. Westminster. Crowd, but actually this is being an issue full probably now two decades, and it comes really from a very simple proposition, and that is this that we know that they're all. Ferry many difficult difficulties in society for some people for. Women, people minorities disabled people and saw. Some. People not me, but some people think that this is. Really down to. A lack of understanding of those groups on the part of man or white people. Those who are not disabled and that if you could somehow just change people's minds and attitudes than the problems to do with for example, underachievement school from some some ethnic minorities or The pay gap for women. I think which sort of disappear and I think that. For some folks who think that there's an easy route to the solution and that is. Summed up by the following. Proposition that if you can stop people saying things that are wrong, stop them thinking things that are wrong, so if you takeouts Kind of language that supposedly lead to people of Color, being denigrated and saw, and that will stop people thinking less well pickle of color, if you remove the language of sex difference than actually the bigotry or the the. Discrimination that is aimed at women will also dissipate now. This is all complete nonsense, but it is I think firmly believe amongst a lot of people, and so actually underneath the whole idea of the council culture platforming, and so on and so forth. Is Not just a sort of cavalier disregard or a source of simple bullying. It is part of a philosophy that says if we can stop people saying things, and we'll stop them thinking it, and we will get to a better world, and that of course is white so dangerous because it isn't bullen of just some so the passing fad. This is a very fundamental idea about how society should work. which, people don't going to be dispossessed all very easily, and so suddenly, despite Martin Luther. King taught us. We are as a society beginning to judge people by the color of their skin, not the content of their character, and from that comes council culture. While I think that we need to distinguish between. The your average person thinks. I don't think like that really I. Think most people in this country take the individual. They need as they are that that's a that's a separate thing from what you might call the decision makers who? Have a whole different set of imperatives, so they will be perhaps a bit obsessed by the proportions of male or female. Whitestone black whatever is. that. They have on their roster. It's A. It's a terrible thing for them to pay attention to that, but I think. Why don't you start to kind of be tyrannized by those kinds of categories and find yourself being constantly afraid of what people might say about you or about your organization? Then you start to lose sight of what really matters authorities in universities in some public services. A potential beginning to lose sight of what the point of diversity and equality is, it is not to have a SORTA perfect arithmetical representation of the nation at every table, and on every minute of every media outlet. It is to make sure that people are not excluded from opportunities for the wrong reasons for bad reasons.

Beta Tales

"Ww DC and data. Season is upon us every year. I, I, him in Haw, and I always install all the Betas usually. We don't cover them a lot. Until the we're closer to release, but because of this year that changes are so significant, and people are just so interested in the stuff that Steven and I, both kind of made a point to go a little crazy with Beta installs and we've been using them now for a weekend. I thought it'd be fun to report how these features are working and. And given. This is Betas with some of this stuff could change, but you know. Let's kind of dive in deep on it I will say you've gone a little deeper than I have so the pool right I'm swimming in the pool. You did a cannonball from the top of your house into the deep end. Oh, I did I. Did I I wrote a post in the payers forum saying Hey Steven I've gone a little crazy with the bait. If you've got questions, let us know and a team. Oh, wrote crazy like install watch os Beta. And one of us did I'll give you one guess. Not, me. Like I had actually Rosemary. went in that pool I I said well. Did you watch blow up anything? She says well when I wash my hands at once crash, but otherwise it's been fine, and like you know it and also I feel kind of cavalier this year because I'm home, not traveling. if if my phone gets to messed up I can always unwind. The Beta I'm. Home doesn't matter that much so I. I didn't feel that bad about it, so so let's just Let's list the devices right What have you got? The BETAS installed on, so I've got the Beta on a external SSD that. I'm booting my macbook pro from I, need my fro some later this year, so I'm not willing to put the bait on at directly yet. And running it on my I've had many other. My leverage IPAD PRO is probably going to succumb to it. By the time this episode comes out out of my phone, and the definitely not my Mac pro The this machine is where I make my living, and it will stay on Catalina for some time, but yes. I'm playing with it kind of getting my. Getting in the pool. I spent more time with it on the Max I've got thoughts around that, but. I want to get back. Somebody said a second ago. The interest in Beta cycle is way higher than it normally feels like. And maybe that's because a lot of people aren't home. Life's a little bit slower now. It's because like big Sur in particular is a huge change having we just on your iphone. Who Change like there's a lot of things that are really attractive about these Betas. Wherein some years it's like yeah, it's better, but you know. You can live without it for three more months. Some of the stuff people want to really experience now. Yeah, agreed. And and there is kind of some themes to these Betas as we go through it. In the show today I started with the Beta on my is because I have two IPAD pros because I'm that guy so I started with a on the big IPAD pro and it was running fine, and then it quickly cascaded over a couple of days. And I put it on the laptop, so I had big Sur on the laptop in it on the IPAD. Then suddenly I had it on the second IPAD I had on my own. I also put it on my Mac pro because we have a the way. The recording situation is right now in the sparks headquarters. Has You know there's there's four people living in fifteen hundred square feet and so? My studio isn't really where I'm recording shows where my I MAC PRO is. It's where I do all the edits and all that stuff, but I'm not doing the recording there My old studio has been turned into my daughter's. Daughter's bedroom, but we have an extra in there, and that is the kind of recording machine I'm sitting at it right now, so my fancy Mike and Everything so that one is not upgraded or or running Betas, but but but the all the others should Max. The to Max I own are and then a few days ago I. Put on the watch, too. Because I as I told Rosemary and the automakers. If it breaks, it's her fault. But it's you know so, I, I've been reading on everything. This one thing that you may have heard in the news is these are pretty stable Betas I. think partly because wwe came later. This is more like Beta or Beta three in normal year. That being said do as we say, we do. Don't don't know these. If you need to get your work done Yada Yada Yada Yeah. I, mean they're still developer Betas. At this point, you have to have a developer account. The Public Beta will be in July. That's when they're more widely accessible and usually in the past. At least it's been to developer bills for everyone public Betas so. Developer Beta two or three be public Beta one and there'll be a couple of developer builds and then. A couple more puppets, this sort of tiktok approach, and just because this Betas good doesn't mean the next one will be in fact very often. They get worse before they get better. So yeah, do what we say like. Let us take the pain and you know if you have a spare me, shake my head many if it bursts into flames, that'd be sad, but it's not the end of the world. Then yeah, I think it's fine to play with on that, but definitely out of production machine now something you need for work because you can this situation where the you know, it's always like the one happy really need the one workflow you really depend on. That's the one that's broken for months. That'll get you.

Joe Biden says voters 'ain't black' if they support Trump, then apologizes

"You have a problem figuring out whether you're trump and you ain't black it don't have nothing to do with trump. It have to do the fact. I want something for my community. I would love to record van. You're saying he still hasn't shown you why you would vote for him. Specifically a black woman. Running me is necessary especially after the day when we see a black person voting for trump. And you know trump is the modern allowed people in this country. That does make you question how much that person cares about his people. So I understand the statement shop from a from a whole white male. Joe By some fallout from that tense interview between Joe Biden and radio host. Charlemagne the God it comes as Biden has acknowledged the next stage of the vice presidential. Vetting is about to begin. And so we thought we'd call on two of our own colleagues who have quite a bit of experience with that process as we debut a new segment on our program the powerhouse players with ABC News Contributors Republican Chris Christie and Democrat Rahm Emanuel they will offer insight and analysis like nobody else as the two thousand election ramps up and rum. Let's get right to it. You heard it right there. Joe Biden putting his foot in his mouth. He apologized for being so cavalier. But where does this go from here? Well first of all I think what it does is obviously influences. The vice presidential selection. Everybody that tells you. A dozen isn't being honest. It has an impact on a weight on the scale etc and I think the Biden campaign credit for mealy jumping on it and try to Deflated everybody is united in the party with a single goal of beating. President trump. I would step back though and say violated a simple number one rule. You have to project that you're gonNA earn every vote fight for every vote just like you're gonNA fight for this country and what this said underneath was. I'm going to get your vote no matter what I do. Because the other guy's worse than me. And that violates politics one on one but Chris. The trump campaign was immediately out with ads. Criticizing Biden does that continue sure. Of course it doesn't and here's the problem Ramadan. I've talked about this before. The Biden campaign should do everything they can to keep Joe Biden in the basement and stop talking because as soon as he starts talking he starts to create problems. He's in the phase of the campaign right now where it's really a referendum on the president unless he turns it into a binary choice and by doing things like he just did. He's turning it into a binary choice and rob complements the Biden Campaign for defusing it. They've had plenty of practice in trying to defuse these things and they're gonNA play anymore. I suspect in terms of the impact on the vice presidential pick. Though I hope it doesn't impact it because if it does he could take himself down the McCain Sarah Palin route which is not the place he wants to go in my view. This is a first. Do No harm pick for Vice President Biden and run by was already under some pressure to choose a black woman as a running mate. He says multiple or under consideration. Does this increase the pressure? In the likelihood he will choose a black woman. It adds weight obviously To that effort and I think you know I believe in I think you have to look at the history of Vice President. Used to pick a vice president. One do no harm to balance your weaknesses whether it's geographic or ideological when President Clinton picked Al Gore. Jason Southern Moderate Tennessee Arkansas. He Changed The paradigm from balance to partnership. And I think you look at it. It's not like George Bush had worry about Wyoming or president or Senator Barack Obama had to worry about Della Gore's electoral votes. They answered a political part of the equation. But they also added a partnership Element I think in the end of the day the most important vetting after you get to the final three will be president. Senator Vice President Joe Biden. See this person. His partner in making these critical decisions and that to me will be the element that amounts. Because when you look at Sarah Palin she did not fulfil John McCain's message themes and who he was as a character and it became apparent to the voters. This was an impulse. Joyce real choice of a partnership and Chris Biden has committed to selecting a woman. Does that box some in? Was that a good idea. Well listen it's his call right and what it does is it eliminates about fifty percent of the population. But that's his call. I think that you know here. It's even more Stark Martha and Robin mentioned. One thing that I think is very important. Joe Biden if elected will be seventy eight years old with a history of some health issues going into this. The American people are going to be looking a little bit different than a partnership. They're going to be looking at this person to say. Can I see this person as president even more starkly than they do with a normal vice presidential pick? I don't think anybody was worried about Barack Obama prematurely dying office. I don't think anybody who's worried about George W Bush in that regard and so looking at this choice. He needs to look at it that way as well given Senator Biden's vice president binds agent so of his history. I've gone through this process twice myself and being vetted and the partnership matters significantly there's no doubt but also that person has to be able to see you but more importantly the American people in this instance has to see that choice as someone they could see as president of the United States that in the next four years.

'Power' to 'plunge a needle into your arm': Dershowitz says forced vaccinations are constitutional

"Of audio did you happen to hear and forgive me if I missed it Alan Dershowitz saying that the government has the right to plunge a needle into your arm when he was talking about vaccines did you hear about that I always scrolling social media early today I saw something I didn't have time to check in go back good what are the details what it what did he say this because he's a very kind of you know he he he says it how he sees it he analyzes so give us give us is the sky believe me I I admit I was on the Dershowitz jet train I thought he did a great job talking about the impeachment but he was absolutely right I think he's very smart and I respect him but he's a little bit cavalier with this statement saying that the government has the right to literal and I'm quoting here plunging needle into your arm now I think vaccines if we're talking about vaccines for crown of ours it's great to have that as an option if people want to do the vaccine that's fantastic right but it starts to creep me out when you have Alan Dershowitz saying it's constitutional for the states to come after you and just stab you in the arm in the I guess for public safety

"I think that I'm working the same amount of hours but I it's different hours and it's all basketball and really been lacasse rate and I think the other thing that happened gene is when we started in October. You don't go through. September usually go through where you're you're in a hotel room four days a week. Then you're hosting recruits on weekends weekends you do have a little bit tiny charged up for the season and that was that was attractive to me in this change in lifestyle they. I know it's eighty two games but it's probably only sixty practices and instead of thirty seven Games one hundred twenty five practices and then. It's just a year got over last year. We lost in the sweet sixteen tain. I went on the road for like twenty eight out of thirty days. I was on the road. You know just trying to figure out what the next home I needed to get into so that cow's games have been so good to me and not complain about one bit but this was the right time in my life to make this change why coach basketball right now build a culture be around around this incredible organization. Billy Donovan said something to me maybe somewhere in his first year after he had left Florida and Gone Oklahoma City that in college edge you spent so much time talking to and you know courting and trying to get to know players you're never never going to coach and that's where all your time was and you spent so much time in people play players you work in a get where whereas in the NBA you could invest your time remember at that time it was a summer he was out at Ucla working with Russell Westbrook in the gym with his guys and and and the other thing he said to me the two initially was when practice sends in College. What's the first thing you do you gotta go Gregorian phone. Get your phone who did I. What did I miss and in that sense. It's liberating right now. It really is down the stretch and I and I mean this in a good way but because I don't want an axe out. I did not come to the Cavaliers to escape from college basketball. Ask Good Ball but it was really compelling. When I first got my first call from the cavaliers you know it was an early. May and one of my assistants look legit tremendous guy says as coach don't forget we got a load about fifty names on your own because June fifteenth is coming up and you can text sophomores and I I just looked and I said thanks for that that I get the sixteen year olds here in days later so it's all all good it's so good to us but at the same time I was able to this time to find just we spent so much time with with my Assistant Assistant coaching staff in September and the team but more of the coaching staff of how we build this instead of saying to my we're where where are they all tonight whose busy season and then you didn't get the have those those meaningful times as they've taught me some of the NBA language all of these things. It's really you're more prepared for season. Then you probably were in college. John Your priorities in trying to understand what you needed to understand now and what of yours that you were gonNA. Bring that absolutely translated where you had to adjust and you said like the language of the League the verbiage the knowing once you get into an eighty two season the lack of preparation against you coming when you started to sort of you coached in Summer League and you had your staff together there. What were the first couple things where you said. I think this is the most important thing I've gotta understand. I got some advice from several people people on this is that this is a very transient. It's not as much as college really in some respects but you're you might get a trade in the middle of the year you you might get a guy that you only have seven days to thirteen days for training camp to get people's ready and you can't have a completely different language than the rest of the League. So what I try to do is change our language to. It's the same thing you know where. I called a bullet. They might call step up. What I call a pistol. It's aside ball screen and so I just rather than have fifteen guys changed in my language. I change their language but if they if they didn't have a name for it I'm using my old name because I personally had names for everything so that people could we could learn it. I think's a great way of learning they associate actions usually a story behind it and then they don't forget get it going forward. We would debate at several where we're going to call it because I would go okay. What did you call it. WHAT IS IT MEMPHIS call it. What did you call it here last year when I talked to my front bench and they'd probably give me three different name so I said well so it's not universal there. What fits bats best? What can we learn the best so it's well but that was the biggest thing. I think John Cleveland was not the first. NBA team you had talked to who had called through the years. Detroit situation was interesting a couple years ago because because number one you know you didn't have to move it was geographically but it was a very different team in a very different place very veteran laden laden with the cap like this was going to be a roster and Cleveland was different. If you wanted to build a program and teach cheech and maybe do it from the ground up. This was the one four that this was the most appealing again breath. I wasn't leaving a great place like the University of Michigan to go and just be an NBA coach. That was not the goal it was the right situation came along on that was really appealing to me and the other thing that was really appealing. Is You know I grew up in this the Buffalo Area Ben in Michigan. You know I've been in this rust. Belt Lake Ontario the chains I love it. I love it and my four children are fairly close by so. That was another thing if you're going to go to the NBA this. This is the situation but it was what was most appealing to it was this was we're not using the word rebel. We're saying this was like I make the comparison to rocket mortgage orange field. How's that place had good bones at grit tradition. It's just needed to make over in some areas and that's where we are right now. Where repurposing reinventing doing things remodeling our culture way. We're GONNA play the whole deal to really keep up with the Times other or college coaches guys who coached very long time in the college game have come to the NBA. There's been varying degrees of success like most NBA coaches. It's usually built around around. If you have really good players you win if you don't you're probably GONNA struggle but but other people though I think different coaches at different times shruggled with college college coaches and you and I think the coaches and I think you've seen this group that have come whether it's billy Donovan Brad Stevens Evens. Jay Wright is a coach who has had the opportunity may do it some day and you fit in this to me. The common denominator is you're coaches who understood that it is about the players weren't necessarily a celebrity and that's important in this league but I thank you. There's a different intrigue with this with you. In some ways I think the people it feels a little bit like an experiment because and I just think having and followed your career the whole way. I heard these things about you. At every every time you jumped up it would be well. He he you know John runs better stuff than everybody else else but he's not going to be able to recruit at that level. He's going to struggle with that and he's not going to and then you go to another level and then you go Michigan while he and then you're in the national championship game and and again in the final four and I think that's the question again wil John's style. You're coming in the league at sixty six years old. You're mostly guys came younger. It feels like people see this as a little bit of an experiment different than some of the others. Do you feel that no. I don't feel as bad till exact same way when how many people said when I left Lemoyne to go to Canisius. What what are you crazy? You can use the worst program they won five game you know also when we go to. Richmond and then West Virginia January like people were what did you do that and then I remember a really successful coach when we left West Virginia and we really had it going and and I had a very successful small college coach at that I tell you that was a stupid because Michigan's never coming back and I was like that's exactly where do it because you think it's still and so. I think that there's there's some things that just are so transitional every coach if they just follow them and we have some experience in rebuilding and it's it's built through coach a lot of coach being humble humble embracing the process getting everybody to understand. This is going to take some time. Everyone took time except Richmond Bridge. We we had a bunch of good seniors but we've you've done it before and we're GonNa do it again. It's there's no question in my mind and it was something that sixty six it was like I feel as good as I've ever felt in my life when you look at the next president of the United States either one of them could be seventy five years old. Those are demanding jobs to sixty six is young in many respects. This is far as boy. I'd I've tried to keep healthy. Keep up with the game and be very evolve as a coach valves as father evolved parent evolve love as a as a person. You have never been an assistant coach. John you came out wheeling Jesuit and seventy five you go to new faint high school. All you go to see if I knew Faint Highschool Erie Community College Nazareth for one year right right and you can attest. I'm not reading Nazereth Lemoyne for nine years yeah contentious for five years. Richmond four maybe four five years and then and obviously in West Virginia for five and Michigan for twelve always a head coach. What what is your blueprint is a coach because your your you're somebody that a lot of people whether it's your offense people WanNa emulate we were practiced today. Load of college coaches and people want to come in. You've always had people who wanNA come. Your offense is not in a book somewhere you don't hand out the John Beeline playbook or you've not sold your book. I don't know if it's written anywhere I think it's on on scribbled on chalkboards all over the east. What was it about having never been an assistant that maybe shaped you in a way that that worked for you..

"Ten years ago at the exact same moment in the nba season the cuban cavaliers do the exact opposite thing in terms i brought in vets instead of bringing youth but they decided this team made good enough and by the way here's the here's the other a couple of other parallels in two thousand seven do you know what happened to the cleveland cavaliers they play in the nba finals and there were embarrassed by the san antonio spurs they weren't good enough in an effort to get back to that mountaintop in the middle of the season they decided let's just clip this thing put this roster and go forward again and they lost in the second round to the boston celtics a this is it it is it's crazy al history repeats itself i'm a big history channel guy you do wish that you know maybe you don't wish like hitler could cracked cracked book right napoleon war on two fronts attack russia in the dead of winter how that work out didn't work out so well for hitler either right like history repeats itself it just does which also means that there's a reality show star right now that in like twenty years will become president i'd state that's going to happen but ten years ago in these exact same league with his exact same team with the exact same superstar coming off a very very similar thumping by a superior franchise in the nba finals.

"And they got george hill and george hill had been somebody who they handled pine for a starting point guard who doesn't need the basketball in order to play with other stars much like when he was in indiana like when he was in san antonio and now that's what he will be with the cleveland cavaliers rodney hood gives them a ton of a lot more athleticism a hybrid wing a two three you can who can shoot and can score so they've gotten much younger already they have said they were old really really old and and this is here so jordan jordan clarkston george hill rodney hood and larry nance all coming to all coming to the cleveland cavaliers that correct do i have those names correct there's another one another one according to words do weight's going back to miami now is that the fake where'd did you can't make sure that's a real this is the great for this is one of my favorite days of the year and they're doing a lot also seems like at their spending money yana why i don't know the dollars that sense i think that they are the here's the here's the secret dwayne wade is washed up he's not any good anymore he is washed and congrats have cleveland recognize that and had the conversation with lebron james like i know you guys are boys i understand but if you want to win another title he got to go well it seems like they're doing this forelo prime like two s team battered their spending money maybe i like that i was going to say are they're trying to coax him to stay with it like they had to do something you can't just sit there and not do anything go like hey we got the run like that didn't work the problem with this is it does feel a little bit like the last time lebrun left town right last time the round the town remember their big they went and got shack man we need some size let's go get shack and anton jameson and anthony.

"Sounds she couldn't really do anything if she tried these are big dog problems the cleveland cavaliers have some big dog problems but at least for the day or at least for one night they were alleviated desperately in need of a win in a highly entertaining game i guess i mean like look some of it felt a little bit like adult league basketball you shooter three 'eyeshooter three first time in nba history two teams combined for forty made 3point shots by like this game was plucked was played 3point line to threepoint line and man was there some great shooting and i have long contended that anyone who says basketball players they aren't as skilled as they used to be like really is dribbling passing in shooting not a skill i think you miss remember how skilled or how unskilled some players were back in the day but look they had a lead in the fourth quarter late they gave it away nearly choked it away and survive the timberwolves in regulation lebron james had a huge blac shot had an incredible statistical game and then did this to get the cavaliers it up franck warriors lebron james fanshawe it couple of things here first there are some similarities at least to the christian laettner shot that was kentucky and due back in the day and i'm not really sure why the minnesota timberwolves are guarding to cavs players in the backcourt with one second to go in the game like you know you make a seventy footer to win the game we tip your capped you you make a fade away from twenty twenty feet with your with the best player or as secondbest player on earth like that's actually a pretty makeable shot.

"That that he wants out that he is asking for a trade so gregg popovich is is ridiculing that idea is they're seeing how differently the spurs handle the drava versus how the cavaliers have handled their internal issues right and to some of the things that threatened to pull the spurs apart haven't done it but the problems for the cavaliers of which there are many on the court have led to them pointing fingers have lend to them blaming one another inside their locker room so kevin love was the guy who ended up getting the brunt of it in their emotional team meeting on monday and we talked all about this last night show but it wasn't just kevin love who got blamed and it certainly isn't kevin love's fault right now just the idea that the cavaliers are pointing fingers at one another what are they tell you when you're dumb entry school you point a finger at someone else that means you have three other fingers pointing back at yourself it's time for these guys too to become accountable to one another and to take ownership a responsibility of the fact that they've lost eleven of fifteen games and i know they're still third in the eastern conference i'm not suggesting it all of they should wave the white flag and surrender i'm not suggesting that that it's over for them it's it would be ridiculous to say that considering that it feels like we get this drama with the cavaliers every so often and because they've added new pieces to the roster yet again because they got guys who were injured but at the very at the very same breath even as i say that it's it would be ludicrous to panic other side of this is that it's also ludicrous to start blaming wanted other thai lou acknowledges that there was a drastic are there was a dramatic team meeting excuse me he's not sure that a drastic measure like that one was required but he does scoff at the idea that this all falls on the shoulders of kevin love rubber muggy problems so you know who knows very well might've it always gotta be w w better guys display together and thought would be a foster right now and on it's really a true care to comes out in the catcher who you are.

"On that one year rent a player deal goes to cleveland and the way that ever wanted talked about fills their needs and they get new at best they get a championship at worse he's wooed away by their championship culture and everything that abroad has helped build varying cleveland alongside david griffin right the and then is convinced convinced to stay in maybe sign a longterm deal with them in a way that most people and most accounts of paul george this point say he's not interested in signing that longterm deal vets the fear before david griffin moving on changes a lot of that fear noun of i'm the lakers i don't see any reason with that knowledge dow and hearing about the celtics and how much they're talking about jimmy butler as one of the big names involved in their conversation why the wake lakers would do anything at this point other than standpat get your number to pick and worry about i'm paul george and a year when he's going to become yours maybe this is presumptuous but i think today the cleveland cavaliers have less of a championship culture than they did yesterday and all the days in the last three years preceding because with dan gilbert showing signs of being a bull in a china shop they can say they can pr spin at all they want that this is a mutual parting of ways with griffin and the cavaliers dan gilbert screwed david griffin david griffin without a contract extension in hand even though abhran james back in april publicly on the record advocated for the cavaliers extending david griffin as the general manager as the winningest general manager in the eastern conference over the past three seasons that he's been there as the gm david griffin was a lame duck june thirtieth i believe was when his contract was set to expire yes there were openings in other nba cities orlando i believe atlanta and milwaukee landmine harrell orlando vetere lando job would actually has been linked to write off for a while an offshoot news came out about a month ago i believe that the cavaliers.
