"Because he's been rigged the dog Patriots podcast with Nick cabins powered by bed us 879 bed us or been u s.com. Well here we are yet another crazy week in the NFL trying to figure out when the Patriots are going to play. Should they have played on Monday night? But yes, here. We are. It looks like the Broncos and the Patriots are going to play off Monday night yet again this coming week and technically it's not Monday night. It's actually Monday late afternoon early evening. Today is a clown who know what paid any more than a block eastern time kickoff. It's the Greg Bedard Patriots podcast with Nick cattles episode 12 brought to you by Bette u s.com Greg your thoughts of everything that has happened over the last couple of months since the last time we spoke. What day is this? Like? I don't know. It's weird. We were talking before we came on like part of the Allure of covering the NFL and not a lot of people know this about me, but when I was coming up through the ranks at the Palm Beach Post, I did a lot of everything I basically started at the bottom. I was an agate clerk which is the person who does like the page. Tool results on the back of the paper and things like that, but I worked my way up from the very bottom and to the point where I covered a little bit of everything coming up, you know from professional golf mm, you know NBA that I did everything and and I did a few Marlins road trips and baseball was my thing. I mean I played in college and and but you know, I also covered football and I and I remember the the the editors of the Palm Beach Post brought me in one day and I was like, oh crap. They're going to name me back up Marlins writer and I was just like, I don't want to cover baseball. I don't want to get divorced. I love my wife like I it's just it that's a hard hard life. And yeah football is much easier to cover down and have like a family and have a real life because yeah, they're crazy Parts like, you know, what playoff runs training camp like all that stuff but like during.

"And it's just <Silence> you can't <Speech_Male> prepare for <Speech_Male> Seattle. So <Speech_Male> yes bullyball, <Speech_Male> I think a little <Speech_Male> bit bullied in this game <Speech_Male> and I don't want to put it all <Speech_Male> in Michelle. I thought <Speech_Male> he had some good tough <Speech_Male> yards. I <Speech_Male> think a lot of it was <Speech_Male> with the blockers. I thought <Speech_Male> Isaiah when <Silence> I'm just looking <Speech_Male> at my chart now Isaiah <Speech_Telephony_Male> Wynn had a really <Speech_Telephony_Male> rough game. <Silence> <Speech_Male> Mason had <Speech_Male> <SpeakerChange> a tough game <Speech_Telephony_Male> for him to knee wasn't <Speech_Male> great <Silence> <Speech_Male> when really had <Speech_Telephony_Male> a tough time <Silence> and <Silence> that's the type <Speech_Male> <SpeakerChange> of thing <Silence> or just <Speech_Male> you can't <Speech_Male> you can't simulate <Speech_Male> it in practice. <Speech_Male> And <Speech_Male> so I thought they <Speech_Male> they got a little bit overwhelmed <Speech_Male> then when it comes <Speech_Telephony_Male> to playing the Raiders <Speech_Male> this week and <Speech_Male> I haven't watched Raiders <Speech_Telephony_Male> film. I watched <Speech_Male> a lot of it off last <Speech_Male> year when I was covering <Speech_Male> the Raiders for part of <Speech_Male> the season <Speech_Male> and that's <Speech_Male> a very simple skiing <Speech_Male> Paul guenther <Speech_Male> runs. The old Bengals <Speech_Male> scheme. <Speech_Male> They shouldn't <Speech_Male> have any issues with <Speech_Male> it. Max <Speech_Male> Crosby a <Speech_Male> front is very <Speech_Male> good. He's like <Speech_Male> JJ Watt Junior. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> I don't know what else they've <Speech_Male> imported. I know <Speech_Telephony_Male> they basically brought <Speech_Male> in all new linebackers <Speech_Telephony_Male> which they needed to do <Speech_Male> cuz their linebackers <Speech_Male> were terrible last <Speech_Male> year wage, but <Speech_Male> this should be a game <Speech_Male> where the <Speech_Male> Patriots are able to <Speech_Male> do, whatever they want <Speech_Telephony_Male> offensively <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> and play bully <Speech_Telephony_Male> Ball, but I think <Speech_Male> I think she <Speech_Male> Seattle had <Speech_Male> more to do with <Speech_Male> what went on home. On <Speech_Male> the night then <Speech_Telephony_Male> it was you know, the Patriots <Speech_Male> just having <Speech_Male> a tough time. It's just <Silence> that they're <Speech_Male> just they're unique <Speech_Male> and you really don't <Speech_Male> <SpeakerChange> know until you play them. <Speech_Male> Yeah, and you talk <Speech_Male> about Bobby Wagner <Speech_Male> getting off blocks <Speech_Male> last night, <Speech_Male> you know, looked <Speech_Male> at Vegas vs. <Speech_Male> New Orleans Monday Night <Speech_Male> Football in <Speech_Male> Vegas did <Speech_Male> have some issues getting <Speech_Male> off blocks, <Speech_Male> and it looked like <Speech_Male> the Saints could run ball <Speech_Male> now, obviously <Speech_Male> they have Alvin Kamara <Speech_Male> and their offensive <Speech_Male> line is pretty damn good, <Speech_Male> but it did look <Speech_Male> like there could be some <Speech_Male> opportunities there <Speech_Male> for the Patriots <Speech_Male> vs Vegas, but <Speech_Male> <SpeakerChange> we're going to hold off <Speech_Male> because it's actually <Speech_Male> the next <Speech_Male> podcast. We're <Speech_Male> going to break down the Raiders <Speech_Male> versus <Speech_Male> the Patriots or as <Speech_Male> I should say, they're made <Speech_Male> as he's Greg <Speech_Male> Bedard. <Speech_Male> I am Nick cattles <Speech_Male> the Greg Bedard <Speech_Male> Patriots podcast <Speech_Male> with Nick cattles, <Speech_Male> of course is brought <Speech_Male> to you by <Speech_Male> Bette u s.com. <Speech_Male> Don't forget <Speech_Male> to re-review <Speech_Male> us <Speech_Male> hit us up on Apple <Speech_Male> and continue <Speech_Male> to enjoy the show as <Speech_Male> we continue to actually <Speech_Male> do this podcast <Speech_Male> twice a week <Speech_Male> Greg. "I'd like to see that a little bit more. I'd like to see a couple of more, you know back shoulder throws to Harry and maybe it'll come once the chemistry is built up between Cam and nikhil but I'd like to see them throw the ball up a little bit and say hey nikhil make a play downfield, you know, throw a 15 20 yards downfield make a play kid. Let's see what you can do. I get the swing passes. I get wanting to get him into space and maybe try to build him up a little bit. But I do think if you want to see the progression of this offense, they've got to make sure that they keep n'keal Harry in the plans and they've gotta be willing at Louis. Every once in a while to take that shot downfield and give him the opportunity to make a play one-on-one. Yeah. I I think it's a it's a good thought Nick and one thing that I would like to see Josh McDaniels do is is probably build that in early into the game. Like first first pass of the game. Let's let's wrap a back-shoulder past and n'keal Harry that we know is going to work that wage were confident in then maybe give him, you know, like a little bubble screen or a slant and then once the the defense is thinking all right. Well, you know, I gotta gotta be ready for the short stuff, you know against nikhil object you'd let them, you know double move it over the top and see see what happens. I mean the problem the problem when Keel that I notice in the difference on film between him and a guide like DK Metcalf who for obvious reasons, they get compared to is that Harry just he lacks explosion down the field. He doesn't get a whole lot of Separation Metcalf is much money. Our physical even though the same he plays Metcalf plays like he's like six seven and n'keal Harry plays like he's about six foot one. Really McGill areas, like a six-foot-four received. He's gotta he's gotta play bigger. If he's not going to be people down the field. He's gotta play bigger. And right now he's just not doing that. I will get to the defense because there are some issues in the middle of field. There's a big big big issue according to Greg at linebacker. But before we do that tell the people about our friends Greg, again bet u s.com. The reason why we have this grave yard Patriots podcast with Nick cattles actually happened. Yeah. "I mean, he's definitely different than you know, Earl or Cam in terms of you know Adams. Can you he's probably one of the best blitzers I've ever seen a safety belt check indicated that they did more of that in the first game and any tackles like a Mack truck and so he's he's a guy that even helps to Seattle against a Cam Newton even more so that'll be interesting to see on Sunday night. And so my last question Danny is what your pick for Sunday night. What are you feeling? I think with Seattle being at home and we don't know how that Advantage is going to play out. Like it's it's weird because Seattle it has been such a great place for them to play but I think they need to come back home the fact that they started off so fast on offense. That was the second most points. They scored in a row game in Carol's 10:00 now eleven Seasons, I think Seattle is going to get in I see it being a relatively low-scoring game but 2316 something like that Seattle. I do think I think their ability to be more aggressive. I think they are going to get added for scam to come back and I'm not sure if in a second game with that system that they're going to be able to do something like that just yet. Yeah, I tend to agree with you. I haven't made my pic yet. I got to watch a little bit more film but I think this is the Dolphins were a nice soft open for the Patriots. It's what they needed with the whole so many changes on offense with Cam and everything but this starts are very tough stretch wage. Of them and I got a feeling I mean, remember I went through my predictions. I had the Patriots starting 4 and 6 and then winning out to make it to win the division again, and this start this is a really tough match up from week to they would have much rather seen Seattle later in the season..

"This is a team that needs to play great defense get a lead play ball control. That's their path right now. I think they'll be able to pass more by the end of season. But right now you want to go out there put points on the board and make Cam Newton have to drop back and pass cuz that is not a strength question number three dead. I think you know everybody sort of knows the defense. We know the linebackers. We know Jamal Adams. I think I think the big question for me is is that offensive line any better? And does it even matter with what Russell Wilson is doing back there at this point? It does matter especially if they are going to try to throw the ball a little bit more early June games. I think that they gave up three sacks and I think it was a total of 10 hits on Russell Wilson from two of those sacks were flat-out Russell's responsibility one. He held the ball too long the other one the guy that he needed to account for that if guy was coming he needed to get rid of the ball. He didn't I don't know if offensive line is going to be better right off the bat. I think eventually it will be it looks like they got a really good guard and the rookie Damian Lewis third-round pick out of LSU there right tackle loss. Is people don't tend to get rich taking cast offs from the Jets? And that's that's what jail is. I mean, he's got its aren't shells nephew. So he's got some incredible vibrant and she'll is off on that and he got he got put on his but like flat-out deposited on his butt in in the first game with a bulrush, but I think they eventually will better off. They certainly looked like they execute and then passes in a way that I had never seen them. Like they they ran the best screen I've seen in Pete Carroll's eleven years here. So I'm not sure if they are better right now..

"That Boston Sports Journal sent you let's start where we pretty much always start Greg Cam Newton this weekend, obviously a tougher task ahead of him with Seattle's defense versus what we saw last weekend against that Dolphins team. Yeah, no question and Nick this is off. The Seattle defense has I don't want to say been Kryptonite to Cam Newton, but it's been a tough chore just like they really have been for every quarterback in the league but dead. Game comes into this he's he's he's faced them eight times. He is actually I think it's 9 * 1 and 5 in the regular season. He might have been hurt for one of those. Yeah, one in one in the postseason. His rushing average in the regular season against him is 4.98. And the postseason is 1.8 to completion percentage is 57% off the regular season, you know, this is going to be a very tough chore. I watch some of the Seahawks film and you know sort of what jumps out and what's going to be a problem for a Cam Newton this Patriots team is, you know, they're fast. They're they're fast all over the place and I think really the addition of Jamal Adams from the Jets at safety really puts the icing on the cake cuz you know, Bobby Wagner is probably the best middle linebacker in the game. He's fast. He's smart KJ KJ Wright is probably the best You know sort of rangy linebacker can cover title and a sideline kind of guy. Yeah, he he can sort of do it all and if you have a good tight end, he's going to put the clamps on him. And then you you add in Jamal Adams and the thing I think that struck me the most watching them on film against the Falcons was that they're they're letting Jamal Adams in a small Adams. They are letting him be very aggressive play forward. We're normally, you know, in the Seahawks defense everybody's remembers but Earl Thomas is the free safety and Kam Chancellor as a strong safety, you know, Earl was the sideline to sideline middle of the field guy and then cam was sort of the enforcer but he didn't really he didn't really Blitz a whole lot..

"I do want to ask you about Gilmore. We talked about Gilmore last week. I had said, you know the obvious white contract that Jalen Ramsey contract. I thought it was only a matter of time before Gilmore made a little bit of noise behind the scenes for a bump in pay in the very least. And you know, hey The Sun Shines on a dog's but every once awhile, I was right Gilmore gets the bump. What have you heard Ed? So I don't know the exact mechanisms the timings the threats any of that stuff, but what I can tell you and I wrote about it this weekend and then after I wrote what I wrote even got further competent a confirmation, but basically what happened was in the off-season Gilmour and his representation, let it be known and the Patriots that he wanted to raise normally when that happens. It does not go over well with Bill and step number one is well, I'm going to try trade your ass and they did they tried to trade them just like Deion Branch they just they could you imagine the reaction in New England if they dealt the defensive player of the year, even though Belichick has the resume but could you imagine? Yeah, I mean, I thought it was it was crazy some P brought it up at the time. When you look at a cap wise the Patriots actually would have saved about 3 million on the cap, but once they couldn't find any takers for Gilmore Girls. Check was left the decision. Well, what do I do? Do I release him? And then do I risk him going to Kansas City Baltimore Houston Buffalo off like any of those teams? So so it's so Belichick was left with a choice basically and and I got a tip the cap to Gilmore and disrupt representation. They played Hardball with the Patriots. I had their leverage. He was Defensive Player of the Year. They knew anybody would pick them up if the Patriots decided to release Gilmore and so at the end of day Belichick to swallow everything and give them the extra five million. I think it's two and half million in salary and more incentives but Belichick had to give am at home, you know at the end of day and so, you know, not many people go toe-to-toe with Belichick at the negotiating table and win so my hat is off to Stephon Gilmore Girls..

"To type in Boston Sports journal to get your bonus bet u s. All right. So just quick thoughts Tampa. I mean just watch this game undisciplined effort by this team. I thought Brady's first pick was more on Evans and it was on Brady and Arians kind of backtracked after throwing a came pouring out of the I can't believe the Aryan through Brady under the bus watching for that pic without watching the field see it. He's got coaches in the booth. They had the replay. Yeah. I mean, how do you how come out and you rip off? Brady and listen you want to rip Brady Rick Brady? What what you go out there right after the game and you rip him for that interception and then you come back on Monday and say oops my bad. I didn't really guess look at the film and understand what really happened on that play. Hey Bruce, maybe you should watch the film before you go out there and rip your quarterback publicly. But you know, that's that is one of the many examples. We'll see I am not telling you that this is all going to crumble to the ground, but that's one of the many examples that will see Greg Arians is obviously not Belichick. There's no way that Belichick immediately following the game would go out there and say what area and said about Friday and that's something that Brady has to get used he has not gone through something like that before not publicly ridiculed by his head coach and here we are weak one tough loss against a really good New Orleans team in directly under the bus five minutes into the postgame. Yeah, Nick, you know, I wasn't really able to monitor the game cuz of course I was working after the Patriots game and so but I saw some of the place As I saw the Pick 6 and you know, I gotta admit. I mean, I I like Tom I've always had a good relationship with Tom but you know part of me, you know giggled a little bit and I you know at some of his struggles in that game and in what went on, you know, mostly because you know, it drives me crazy when you know, somebody goes to a new place and they're like, oh God wrote The Joy is back. I'm having so much fun and media people come in and they write that stuff and oh, yeah, then crank looked like he was twenty-three years old again. And then you see game one in Grand Club is 33 years old. Yeah, and you know all that stuff and that just it grates on me and I hate that like I don't care if you want to go Tampa go to Tampa just I don't need here about how great it is until you play a game. Well, yeah, don't say anything until you play a game and then we'll see and but watching the film back off. I came away. My my impression was more about I thought I thought the coaching let Tom down like you talked about I thought you know, I went through it and I had Brady for 9. Plays. You know, he yes. He got Pat. I think it was three pass-interference calls, but those girls were dimes. I mean, you know, they had to interfere they had to stick a hand in or else they would have been big place page him for 5 - plays but I had I had the team coaching whatever for at least 8 - place like just in terms of you know God, what's his name? Thirteen? Who's the who's Mike Mike Evans, you know stops on the interception. You can hear on the broadcast as Tom's letting go with the ball. He's going off like for its Tampa to like it's split safeties run down the middle..

"And get set up today. Be sure to tell them Boston Sports channel. Sencha. We got to start with Cam. Obviously Greg. He's been the big story leading up to this game on Sunday. I thought he was terrific your thoughts. Yeah, Nick. I thought for an opener. I thought in a new quarterback in the new system and everything. I think it went about as well as you could have hoped. I mean, yes, they only scored 21 points, but anybody who watched the game knows that the Patriots left off. A ton of points on the field including, you know cam taking a sack on the edge of field-goal range. Just something that can't happen look like there was some mix-up on that play. Of course the n'keal Harry from a lot of the endzone inexcusable blood to a 15-point swing in the game. You know, I thought the cam was really good. I thought that I thought that the read-option the zone-read that stuff really worked. Well the Dolphins had a tough time with it amazing reading some of the quotes out of Miami after the game that they weren't really prepared for that kind of stuff. I mean, what did you think the Patriots were going to do? Run Tom Brady's offense? No one Cam Newton. I mean that that wouldn't have made a whole lot of sense. I thought the camper at the end of day. I think he'd completed like 79% of his passes. You know, I wouldn't say they were first of all, they weren't very high degree of difficulty. I think when went and I thought Rated my graded the film and of course Phil girl loves to nice. I have my chart out get the job. I don't think I had him for a plus throw in the game because I don't think any of them were that tough. I thought that the one really tough throw was more of an Edelman catch over the middle than a great Newton throw. I thought Edelman kind of bailed him out. I thought that there were a couple of high passes including the Edelman drop. Yes. It was a drop but it also was he was wide open in the middle of field. He had to leave his feet. I'm not saying that Edelman shouldn't have said that that it was Newton's fault. No Edelman should have caught the ball. He should have but the past should have been better. And then there was another throat element in the flat where it was high and Edelman took an unnecessary blow in in those are the type of throws you do get with Cam and it's something to monitor going forward. That's just when he misses he misses high and dead. Those passes could turn into turnovers they could turn into injuries for some of the receivers and tight ends. But you know, I thought all in I thought it was really good. I thought the offensive line played outstanding. We you and I have talked about sorry bully ball coming to New England..

"42 it would mean that you lay the point you give Miami the 6 and 1/2 and you know, I think looking at this season it's so tough, especially in week one trying to figure out who's going to win and especially when you talk about spreads. I do think that things should be a little funky and sloppy early on I just feel like I'd go with the under here just because of the first week no preseason. No joint practices. Like you said, there's a lot of newness. You've got three rookies on the Miami offensive line. You've got all the things that New England's trying to figure out McDaniels and cam all that kind of stuff. So I'd go with the under but I also think the Patriots will cover here might be a late cover, but I just think it's Patrick against this Elite secondary. I do think like you mentioned earlier on in the podcast that because of that young offensive line with Miami Belichick's going to mess around with those guys going to screw around move some guys off. Before the snap and you know, I could see something like I don't know I could see 1710 I could see 2113 something in that area and where it would be below the age forty-two but the Patriots still cover so but I'm pretty confident that they will win week one and get off to a pretty decent start all things considering. Yeah, I think so too. I think this this is a really good opponent for the Patriots in week one the Dolphins. I think they're they're certainly on their way up. They are more talented than they have been. I think they're going to be a better much tougher match up in the second half of Season especially if to a is out there and part of the mix. I don't think he's going to be in the mix in week one not even 4-series. I think it's too early for that. But I think that this is a is a really good soft opener for the Patriots. They need it but you know, look the one thing they can't do they can't get many shootouts and Fitzpatrick likes to do that. He lived. Get shotgun empty just let it go. That's where the secondary comes into play and the Patriots are going to need that secondary to be the best in the league for them to get a win on Sunday and it'll be interesting because of course the lifetime Parker played against Gilmore things did not work out. So well noticed the van Gilmore so he's got something to prove. I think he's got a little bit of a chip. Of course. He showed up again on the injury report will see if he's even out their package has been banged up. We'll see how he looks a lot of unpredictability about the 2020 football season, but Greg and I we will be here throughout its entirety. We both like the Patriots coming up on Sunday 1:00 at Gillette Stadium. The dog has them at 10 and 6. I pretty much have them at 10 and 6 as well. We feel I think pretty similar about this football team heading into the Year everybody. Enjoy the football weekend. Enjoy Patriots. Dolphins will be back early next week. See if we were right see if we wrong what happened in this game and then of course, maybe a little look ahead to what's coming up in week 2 till then it is the Greg Bedard Patriots podcast with Nick cattles. "Maybe it's a Larry Bird fan. Maybe is a Kevin Faulk fan. I could tell you he's very active in our daily Q&A as he's off. He's all over my case. He's pepper me with questions. All right. Well good job solid job out of Bad Axe thirty-three Gregg. I know you talked about how poured the passing offense was in the sessions that you watched. However, could the reason be our wage? The Box are just so good. Like you said even Ross and Brian are good Duggar a rookie was very good early as well. So how much when you look at this offense the passing game struggles Greg, how much do you credit the defense versus how much you actually look at the offense and go they're just not good certainly a little, you know, Nick I just think that God I certainly had been watching football for for a while. So I like to think that I know the difference and look you have to give the Patriots secondary a ton of credit app i m a r they're spectacular. I mean even like bad accent. I mean DeAngelo Ross and Miles Bryant are two guys that were released. I'm not sure if they're back on the practice squad. I can't remember our thoughts had but two kids who really did a nice job in Camp and made plays and and they were just so deep in the secondary and so yes, they deserve a lot of Chrome. They make things a lot tougher that being said you still should see flashes of big plays in the in the passing game. Those were few and far between much lower than any other training camp. I've been to Across The League, I think also I look at Cam Newton's sort of processing the game and it's on the slow side. And that is one of my big worries with Cam. It has been watching him in the past is you'll watch him on coaches film Nick and you'll say you'll even see the carbs which way it's going be like, okay. Well this guy's going to be open and like, you know, three step drop boom get it out and he's like three step hesitate then get it out. And so we saw a lot of that on the practice field is not very clean because is it because that's just a weakness of his is it that he's trying to learn the offense and it's not quite going quick enough in his head. Is it because he's trying to be too perfect because he's knows there's a dog Pressure on him and that he's got to prove the football world that he's still a starting kind of franchise quarterback, or is it a combination of all those things? Like how do you feel how do you feel about his kind of mental about the game is football IQ and how he reads things when you look back at his past and and what you saw a can yeah, I I I want to say it's all of those things Nick. I just think that way he's a guy and you gotta remember this is a kid who played it Auburn under Gus Malzahn and that is one of the simplest College offenses that you'll ever see everything pretty much dictated for the quarterback. So that's sort of his base. Urban Meyer wasn't whole lot different when cam was originally recruited the University of Florida..

"So yeah, he is he's unique Teddy Charis is just a great guy, you know, good-good big strong pass-blocker, but not the fleet of foot in the Run game that was an issue for the Patriots. But you know, maybe the Run game will be different. And actually that's the second question I had for you. So, you know, we know Chad O'Shea was there with the dolphins came in here and kicked the crap out of the best defense in in the NFL last year when the Patriots needed a win Chad Chad O'Shea gets fired most likely because they needed a dumb things down because they're it's a rebuilding team with a Young quarterback with to a who's going to be a starter eventually. But so they bring back Chan Gailey do I think I think you and I he might have been on the Dolphins off the first time around back when we covered the team. What have you seen out of this offense and how different what what are the differences going to be from what we saw last year maybe in week 7 a.m. Man, honestly, it's hard to tell we've had no pre-season and we did watch some summer practices, but you don't see a ton of scheme stuff. I mean, I think they're going to try to log in on the strength of their players. You know, I think you're going to see Ryan Fitzpatrick still taking some shots downfield to Preston Williams and DeVante Parker. I think you're going to see a minimizing of the importance of em tight end position which means fewer catches fewer opportunities from Mike gesicki with somewhat of a fantasy darling for some of those fantasy football. Gurus. I don't see it off. I think they're really going to try go a lot of a lot power and when to a gets in there, they're going to lean on his strengths and I'm you know, maybe that's somewhere in November. You'll see a ton of walk ins and outs Slants and outs. It's going to be a quick throwing offense, but I think fits that just going to let Fitz do with Fitz wants to do, you know at the end of last season dead. The Dolphins basically admitted that fits had taken over the offense. He was deciding what to call and and he was telling his players what was best for the offense. So that decision to get rid of O'Shea was likely made prior to that upset. You know, I think probably when they're all in seven flow started thinking about a change. Yeah, it's it'll be interesting to see them because I was looking back at it today. And the last time that the Patriots saw chain Gilly was with the Jets in 2016 and Fitzpatrick was his quarterback and you know, I'm sure you've already got fired after that season that was bowls there but they only managed 20 points total and two matchups against the Patriots. So it'll be interesting to see how they attacked him. Third question I have for you is just sort of what's the what's the vibe?.

"And he's he's a captain in his first year so our land and Robertson, Illinois, but you know good pass-blocker not the greatest of run guys, but I think you know for week one in knowing that your defense is going to be ahead of your office. I don't think Belichick could dream up a better scenario than you know, yes, Ryan Fitzpatrick is going to be an issue has been an issue for this team. They certainly have talent but with the Patriots doing all their sort of Amitabh And different stunts and twists bringing linebackers and bringing safety's I think basically Bill Belichick wants to have those those rookies. They're basically their heads spinning by about Midway through the first quarter and I think that plays right into the Patriots and gives them a big Advantage another thing about this game. That's interesting. And you know, I agree with that young offensive or not too concerned about Fitzpatrick. I know he's had some pretty decent games against New England and he's done pretty well against Belichick All Things Considered, of course, it's always relative and we're talking about Belichick and his record against quarterbacks. It said I'm not too worried. I just I believe in this secondary. I think they're Elite and I'm not too concerned about Fitzpatrick putting up as much as they can now, it is interesting, you know, Stephon Gilmore. He pops up on the injury report. You know, what's that going to look like hamstring soft tissue kind of deal. We have to be ready for that this season. You never know. You can have a lot of guys that probably pop up on the injury report with some juice. So we'll see the other part of this though. We already talked about Shane gaily the new offense of coordinator. But you know, you have down here that Miami had the League's third-highest man coverage rate at 46% you think life is crucial with cans debut coming up on Sunday. Absolutely and I think this this sort of all folds into the biggest factor, I haven't all this and when you look back at home, whether it's Brian Flores last year beating the Patriots and week 17 Eric Mangini back when he's with the Browns Matt Patricia, the last time Patriots played the Lions up there and you know, I got the snot kicked out of them by Patricia's defense these defensive coaches that have left the Patriots and have gone against the Patriots. They've sort of had the formula like they've gone against the offense they've gone against they know are you see this motion they're going to do this if we give them this look this is what they're going to take now with Cam. It's complete that is completely off the table and I think dead. One thing when I started looking back at that week 17 game last week because I wanted to see all right. Well, they played them this way with Tom. How are they going to play in with Cam and what jumps off the page is dead. They are stacking the box and they are man to and they are basically saying like go ahead Tom try to beat us with whatever they had out there and week 17 and finishing the receivers right punishing receivers making them, you know, trying to force them to separate and be physical and try to make plays on their own and it usually did not work out. Well, yeah, it didn't work out but the thing is and we've talked about it before with Cam Newton floors can't do that. He can't go man pressure man pressure all the time 46% of the time probably in that game against the Patriots. I wouldn't be surprised if it was 70% off the amount. They played man in that game. They can't do it because if you play Man coverage on the outside and say the.

"You've got them at 10 and 6 tell us about it. Yeah, so I went through the internet is a great thing Nick. They have these they have these sites where you can go and sometimes the internet's great thing. That's not so much that is true. Just avoid Twitter so they had Sites where you can predict every single week of the NFL season. So I like to do that just to fool around and see what happens and I came out with 10 and 6 for the Patriots. I actually at one point and you can sort of gauge the standings as you're going. I have them at 4 and 6 at one point. Yeah, and they were a couple of games behind the bills and the AFC East. I think I I think I had them splitting the season series with the bills, but then they reeled off six straight wins another one in the playoffs over the Steelers. They lost to the I think it was the Chiefs game. And so that's where I came out and I and what's funny is that I went back and looked at when the schedule was was released like everybody does I went through the wage schedule and just said, okay just for you know Giggles I'll go through it and I came out with 10:00 and 6 also now I will warn people Nick that I went through my history log. This works General. Com of predicting the Patriots season and I was one game too generous each of the past three years. So that would leave you to you know, 9874 us math Majors instead of the tenants say exactly and and I will say this I think that's significant because I think I think 9:00 and 7. I don't know if the 9 and Samsung is going to get the Patriots into the playoffs even even with the new format. Yeah. I I think the way I went through it. I think the AFC West I think I also had the Raiders were making it. I think they have a little bit of an easier schedule. I think the north has an easier schedule the South will beat beat each other up as normal so they will probably have a nine and Seventeen emerge. It might have a couple of teams right around there the Colts, you know, and what have you so you know, when once I saw that once I saw I had them at 10 and 6 I went back and I said, yep. Let me just see what happens if I do make them 9 and 7. So I changed the week 16 Showdown against the bills to a bills victory that made the bills the AFC East Champion in the Patriots were on the outside looking in very similar to 2008. The last time they did not have Tom Brady as they're starting starting quarterback. So, you know, I think that's an accurate number. I think you know right around anywhere from 11:00 and 5 to 9 and 7. I am not one of these doom-and-gloom guys. Yes, they have issues. But that's negating all the other issues that all the other teams have an office in the coaching advantage. And so, you know, I don't know I mean Nick do you think that that's being too optimistic or do you think that's yeah. I mean, think again, I think the bottom of the barrel for this team is 9 and 7 and that's the premise is always that you're healthy. If healthy, then you'll be better than not right. So if this team is healthy including cam who's one of the most important guys on the team Obvious reasons if they're healthy across the board for most of this season, I don't think 9:00 and 7 is crazy. I don't think 10:00 and 6 is crazy. I think you start to feel a little bit too. Bullish. If you bring up 11 wins, which is what need an 08 when they got hosed and didn't get into the playoffs that year as luck would have it but I don't think 9:00 and 7 is outrageous. I don't think 10:00 and 6 is outrageous..

"You a hell of a deal and also Boston Sports Journal that we'll also they'll also hook you up. There you go. Boston Sports channel, as always. All right big picture here, you know, I've been seeing stuff Greg all over the interwebs the last few days about this team, you know, bleacherreport.com Eating them. I think it was Nineteen as a staff in the NFL you go back to the ESPN football power index. They had the Patriots around 9 or 10 in the league as far as a playoff hopes and overall ranking. Is this a playoff team? You pretty confident there a playoff team. Are you kind of wavering? What do you thinking going in here? Absolutely. I I to me there is little doubt that they took our playoff with 9 mm with you a hundred percent. Yep. Yeah. I mean, I don't know what sure it's not, you know, it's not your older cousins Patriots team, you know, it's going to look a whole lot different but change can be good and and look at the look. They have a great secondary you have a they have a could be a great offensive line. They should be able to run the ball. I was actually texting with my crease earlier today. We were talking about some stuff and I said, you know I said this team this team needs to rush for three thousand yards this year and month. the Ravens set the record, I think it was last year or two years ago. They said it at about thirty four hundred yards. I think at the Patriots get to the upper ranges of you know, 2829 hundred. I think I think they're on course to have a successful season. They're going to need have the lead they are going to need to play good defense, but you also have one of the best coaching staffs in the league. And yes, there's there hasn't been a lot of continuity on offense. They're going to have work through some things but so is everybody else. I mean everybody else is as in the same bucket and while I don't think Bill Belichick is invaluable. He's pretty damn good at what he does and I have a lot of confidence in what he does. There are two people I never bet against Tom Brady and Bill Belichick and Tom Brady's gone, but Belichick is still here. So I have a lot of confidence said and also Nick the other thing is, you know, what do you think the divisions going to do? Yes, Buffalo is going to be good. You know, we'll see how far Josh Allen can take him. I'd rather have Cam Newton dog. Josh Allen, but that's me the Dolphins speak to that's me to the Dolphins have had a ton of changes in their front seven and other places that's going to be a work-in-progress the Jets of the Jets. You know, I don't have a lot of confidence in Adam gase as the head coach. I like them as an offensive coordinator..

"He I know a lot of people that don't like can they throw out, you know, he's lost photos it eight games in a row as last eight games and you know, he was never truly a winner and you know on the radio a few weeks ago. Somebody called me and I'm He's a loser. He's a head case. I think people remember the bad about cam which is the sulking the towel over the head walking away from the podium at the at Super Bowl which by the way, Chris had was sitting right next to him squawking and you know celebrating winning that Super Bowl which is why I came got up and left not a lot of people talk about that. But anyway, I digress I think there's also a lot of good way he Embraces the game and I know a lot of people listen, I've heard the word energy enough to make me throw up but he does have the energy he does have the you know, he Embraces the game and if you talk to teammates from Carolina from his days in Carolina and at Auburn, he's a great teammate pretty much everybody to a man stands by him. So if you think he's selfish jackass, nobody likes him. Nothing could be further from the truth. They're just they're just fine with them and they think he's going to be they think that he is going to be part of this fully bald Persona that that would cam gets out there and he does his sort of things in the offense and how they run the offense that's wage to create a little bit of space for him to be the you know, slant bowl over a secondary guide type of player, right? That's what they Envision and also, you know, the back shoulder has gotten a little bit better, but I will say well, you know, I I've had a lot of concerns about in the Keel how impactful he's going to be..

"Remember mentioned my name Greg Bedard to get your bonus speaking of betting. I wonder if we should place a bet on Cam Newton doing a very good job with this offense this year because I keep reading stuff Greg and everything. I read and a lot of it is from you at Boston. Journal.com Ball Sports channel, you know a lot of it is the passing game just down there the passing offense just isn't there the running offense the Run game seems to have at least some optimism behind a Damien Harris who will try to get into a little bit later on this first episode of the Greg Bedard Patriots podcast off the cattle's, but when you when look at this quarterback play would you say right now at this juncture less than two weeks before they kick off a game that really means something or about to walk away. Are you concerned about the quarterback play right now? Am I concerned? Yeah. Yeah, I guess it's fair to say I will say and I sort of coined it on Boston Sports Journal, last weekend. When I sort of gave you you know, the inside scoop on the offense and what they they're feeling about it. Yeah. They're they're going to be playing Bully ball from this. Is there a site about the physicality that they are going to have. I mean, I think more of the Titans last year, you know, they don't exactly have Derrick Henry in the backfield. But I mean, they don't have that Bumper in the back field. But yeah, but they do and Cam Newton. They do have a thumper like it, you know, so I mean you're talking six foot five two hundred fifty pounds just to load you have an offensive line that I could tell you as look tremendous this year. I've been told that these guys have a chip on their shoulder about how bad they played last year and they let women or cuz I've heard about him and I read from birth. Multiple people that he he's looked good at right tackle and I even read this week. I think it was from Evan Lazar that he thinks he might actually end up being better than what Canon was last year. He's looked you know that good at Camp so far. Yeah. I said the same thing I said, think I think when all said and done he might be a an upgrade over Cannon and I will tell you I you know from people that I've talked to in fact, I'm not I'm not the biggest Jermaine eluemunor fan. I didn't I don't know what our fan club guy. Well, I he I will tell you he's played great this training camp. He really has and you know, I always shoot straight with people about what I see and even guys that I'm not crazy about if they're playing well, I'll tell you right and you know, you know what you're going to get it processed for sure, You're going to get that all the time but you know in terms of I know a lot of people at the Ravens he was with the Ravens they traded them to the Patriots when they traded him at the time they were done with them. This was a guy who they they were giving a starting opportunity to age. They wanted him to be you know a starter for them. Yeah, and he just didn't answer the Bell. They were ticked off. They were like we're done with this guy. He doesn't look like he wants to be there in the preseason. He'll like that for them. But.

Cowboys' Allen Hurns sustains severe lower leg injury

"To look at all of his mistakes, he's going to play better. I mean, there's a benefit of the doubt that I can give Philip rivers not the brand of the chargers because we're used to them choking. But a veteran quarterback Philip rivers has played. I think he's gonna come in and have sort of an electrifying second opportunity. Plus, this is a chargers team that found a way to win in Pittsburgh win in Kansas City. I don't see any reason why they should be intimidated about it at the concept of winning in Baltimore that is Jason Fitz host to Spain and fits, and I agree. One hundred percent. My my feeling is the chargers are going to be the first team to see Lamar Jackson twice. I think that's really significant. I think the way that they were able to box him in. Now, he had one great throw. And then he ran for a first down in the soccer stadium in San Diego. So I'm not saying at all Nick cattles that they contained Lamar Jackson, but they did not allow him to run all over. For them. I will extend the point of Jason Fitz and rivers and and how he's expecting him to play. Well, and especially he thinks he can get by on the road. And he brought up the Kansas City game in Pittsburgh game. Let's all realize this that when LA gets off a plane there eight zero this year when they board a plane to play a football game. They're eight and zero in Philip rivers. His QBR is actually better on the road than it is in L A. And I think that is absolutely. Because of that crowd in L A, if you've seen the pictures on Twitter and everything they have about half the crowd full of chargers fans that place has overtaken by visiting teams. It's so bad that the Oakland Raiders when they played the Oakland Raiders that weekend in LA at home. They actually had a pipe in fake sound during practice to get their players ready for a home game for the noise that the raiders fans would make. So I think the chargers on the road that's not going to bother them. And I think Baltimore's issue. I. I agree with your Jackson point. And I'll also say this. They are awful in the red zone. Twentieth. On offense twenty-fourth on defense if they're not better in the red zone. Tomorrow. Chargers went all right came night, ESPN radio and the ESPN app. I I don't mean to belabor this point in Dallas Cowboys are up three nothing. Seven twenty eight to go in the first Allen Hearns broke his leg on a reception. And this has been going on what what boys for probably at least five minutes. Now, the Dallas Cowboys are standing around the field watching all of this unfold. And you can see Dak Prescott Colby's Lee. The defense. All of these guys are standing there staring at this. Jason Garrett is kneeling down holding his hand while they administer care to him. I'm not trying to be heartless. But that's about the last thing that I think they should be doing. I think this Hearns injury is going to be a big big impact. And maybe it's good in it motivates them. But I don't feel good about the fact that all of the Cowboys are standing there watching. Hearns crying that seems that. And I'm not trying to be a jerk. I know that sounds heartless, Nick. But it seems like this is going to impact them emotionally looked shook. And I don't know if he's going to stay, but he looks shook he looked wide eyed. I will say this. I remember going back to last basketball season first game of the year, and the Celtics and Hayward went down with that gruesome gruesome injury looks somewhat similar to what Hearns is dealing with right now. And a lot of people wondered how the Celtics would react, and they actually fought back, and they used it as motivation, and it drove them the play better. I don't know what's going to happen with the Cowboys. This is one of those things when you don't know how a team is going to react because they could react either way. They could be as I said shook like back in that. Yeah. And then the game is pretty much done after that. Or they could be motivated. We'll find out three nothing. Cowboys over the Seahawks. Seven twenty eight to go in the first game. Allen Hearns has suffered a significant leg injury. They are actually at this moment rolling him off the field on a on a vehicle. So a tough situation in Dallas. Let's come back. We'll recap what happened in Houston. The colts are moving on to Kansas City. We have twenty one to seven win over the Texans. But can the colts challenge the chiefs next weekend? And which teams playing this week have the best chance of making a deep run through the playoffs. That's next on game night, ESPN radio and the ESPN app. Hey, y'all
